NZ Naturist Magazine

The Magazine

   Clubs, with & without grounds

This history is largely sourced from the longest-running Naturist publication in this country: the New Zealand Naturist - now known as gonatural.

Next: issue 1 >

This list of venues is in geographic order, thus: Far North, Auckland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taranaki, East Coast, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson-Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago-Southland, Non-Landed.

The Federation membership has grown from eight to over 20 clubs, but naturally centred on club representation, rather than naturism more generally (ie: exhibiting a tendency to exclude 'free range' naturism (with the notable exception of Emiel Roland) and ambivalence with regard to an attempted organisation of this group via "Free Beaches'). The club grounds are listed here in North to South order relative to the nearest city. The normal (solo) links go near to the relevant 'Club Notes/News' item of the specified magazine number. The substantial articles centered on a particular club have the magazine link specified thus: (The article heading: & #link).

Name changes for what is understood to be essentially the same club, are 'contiguous on it's line' below (albeit wrapped), while names of apparently separate clubs start on a new line. (The name of the club's grounds is specified at the end of the line, in parenthesis, where known.)

The Percy Cousins Trust was established by the Federation when Percy missed attending the 9th rally (1961) due to ill health. A PCT reminder appeared in #149.

Several articles cover 'road trips' around the country, with stops at a number of clubs, eg: #10, #20, #58, #83, #84, #85, In #101 two Australian families in one van describe their NZ holiday. Overseas contributor Leif Heilberg reports on a trip around the country in #108; John Sharp covers the North Island in #146, and in #147, a featured article covers both islands (plus some of Australia). A well-travelled Dutchman, Robbert Broekstra, writes of his journey around NZ in #157 and #158 .

There's a three-part summary by Perc. Cousins, which begins with: The Early Days of Naturism in New Zealand in #50, and what amounts to a FAQ for novice naturists in #47.

One of the initially hidden issues for clubs, has been the status of their grounds (if any). Gradually, in proprietary and leased clubs, the membership started asking, 'Why put all this effort into someone else's property?' (See an extract from "a short history of the Kowhai Valley Club" in #65 - December 1972.) In the early days this sort of issue made the establishment of Kaurimu, ASC and AOHC a fairly confused affair for the outsider... Bert Britton enlightens us on that in #58, as does Les Olsen in #131, with 'The AOHC Story' and also their 50th anniversary article.

A consolidated list of Emiel's reports may be found on the Other Contibutors page.
