A CENTURY - 'FROM THE TINY ACORN
   GROWS THE MIGHTY OAK'

The observant reader will note that this is the 100th issue of this magazine. In a few years time it will be a collector's copy, just like issue number one. Not too bad reaching 100 is it; representing as it does 25 years of publication. Now that the 'N.Z. Naturist' is entering its second century, still as much a lively, informative and at times controversial magazine as it was originally, it is appropriate to reflect on the past and briefly look at the magazine's history and how it has changed over the years.

Starting out as 'The National Review' this truly unique nudist publication was first established in May 1956. Eight cyclostyled pages in length, written and typed onto stencils, duplicated collated and distributed by volunteers it carried the following message in its Editorial: " 'From the tiny acorn grows the mighty Oak' is the symbolic thought as I introduce members to this new venture - a national journal. It is not intended to be pretentious or ambitious at this stage, and hence these pages are purposely brief. ..."

That first issue, basically aimed at Club members, recognised a need to inform the general public of nudism in New Zealand - a policy which still pertains today - and it included an insert from the National Organiser of Naturists in New Zealand to non members of Clubs asking them to subscribe to the 'Review'. The cost was set at 1/6 (15 cents) per annum. Presumably this included postage charges. This issue contained an article on 'Naturism - a solution to child delinquency problems', overseas news, club news and amongst others information on National Rallies.

Issue number two got a little more ambitious in that the front cover consisted of a line drawing of a map of New Zealand together with the title of the magazine. This artistic display was not to be repeated again on the covers, although almost every issue thereafter for some considerable time had line drawings within its pages no doubt for added reader interest as well as breaking up the monotony of typewritten pages.

However it was with issue number 10 (winter 1958) that the NZSA (as it was then) got a little bolder, and the success of the magazine was such that by then a printed cover was introduced. The cover, of three nudists overlooking hills and bush became a standard which was to be maintained for the next five years; only the date and issue number, along with paper colour being changed.

Notwithstanding the standard cover format, two other important changes did take place, these being the change of name to the 'National Naturist Review, with issue number 10, and to the 'N.Z. Naturist' with issue number 21 (winter 1961.) The charge reflected the improvement in the magazine and having increased to 5/- (50 cents) per annum with issue number 4, it was to become 1/6 (15 cents) per copy by November 1961.

This issue (November 1961) was to present a milestone in the history of the magazine in that a change from the cyclostyled format to printed pages took place. Circulation increased from 550 to 1,300.

The following issue (August 1961) bore the proud notification that it was registered at the GPO, Wellington, as a magazine. A notation on page 12 of that issue (which actually contained 36 pages - indicating a substantial growth in contributions) said:

'This may be regarded as still another step forward, for it not only means we can mail our magazine at reduced rates, but what is more important, it indicates acceptance by another Government Department. This business of obtaining acceptance is taking time, but we are moving steadily and our foundations are sure.'

Turning back a few issues for the moment, number 19 (Summer 1960) included in the centre of its 36 pages a four page photographic spread, and this became a regular feature from then on. As was the practice in those days the pictures were 'retouched' and this was maintained, even with the introduction of more and more photographs, in each issue until issue number 52.

Photographs first appeared on the covers with issue number 28 in May 1963, and while these were only silhouette in form, by the end of 1964 (#33) proper images were being presented, although of clothed or retouched figures if certain postures were present. Issue number 28 was significant from several points, amongst these of course being cover photographs, but more importantly the glossy paper used for this. The editor at the time also made the following comment: "It is coincidence that with our new look we also say 'Good-bye and thank you' to Annette Mclver who, since the early days when the 'National Review' was cyclostyled, has prepared all the material for publication. With a cyclostyled publication this meant typing everything at least twice, first to make sure it would fit - how it would fit - and then the stencils. Annette is not a typist by training and this has indeed been a labour of love and one of those essential background jobs without which a publication can't get off the ground.'

It would also appear that up until about this time the magazine was only available to Club members and for others on a subscription, but the warning 'on sale to adults only' on the front cover, commencing with the June 1964 issue, together with subtle modifications to magazine advertising inside, suggests that it had now become acceptable for sale in bookshops and newsagents.

Most cover changes, and some inside content, coincided with changes in Editors, each one presenting the image best suited to the day. Editors have generally been given the freedom to run and publish the magazine as they saw fit, with little or no interference from the National Officers of the Federation, although one or two Editors were not happy with developments at particular times and felt it necessary to leave their position. At times also there has been controversy over the name of the magazine, and several suggestions amongst these being 'N.Z. Nudist', 'N.Z. Sunbather', 'South Pacific Naturist' - have been considered and discarded. Also the magazine has not been without its financial worries, but support for its continued publication has always been forthcoming, and publication has only been suspended for very short periods.

Showing an obvious affinity for nature and New Zealand's scenic beauty issues 43 to 53 in 1967, 1968, arid 1969 featured on the back outside cover scenic views of New Zealand, with the appropriate title 'Beautiful New Zealand'. Most of these photographs were supplied by the National Publicity Studios. Commencing with issue number 54, nudist photographs took over from 'Beautiful New Zealand'.

Perhaps the most significant issue in the history of the magazine would have been number 52, which appeared in September 1969. For it was this issue which made a breakthrough in the photographic area by presenting for the first time unretouched photographs. While not all photographs published in this issue were so, a large number gave the regular readers pictures of nudists as never before published and genitals and pubic hair were from then on to be discreetly introduced. Issue number 52 was sent to the Minister of Justice suggesting that it be referred to the Indecent Publications Tribunal. The reply was to the effect that the Minister declined leave to submit the magazine to the Tribunal, which effectively meant that the Minister had given his approval to the magazine containing natural photographs. By issue Number 57 in December 1970 the retouched figure had disappeared and the Editor had become daring enough to show female public hair on the cover photograph of that issue, a practice which was not to be repeated for another six years.

For the first and only time in the history of the magazine two printings were made of an issue, and No 52 unretouched version was retouched for the Australian market. The following article in issue number 52 makes interesting reading:

This is issue No. 52 but it is the first to include pictures that are unretouched. For many years we were under the impression that it was unlawful to print natural photographs, but our experience last year with the Indecent Publications Tribunal proved it to be otherwise. And further, as members of the Tribunal said, "they are inclined to deprecate the practice of painting out pubic areas in health and naturist magazines, and we do not believe that the Act requires that young people be kept in ignorance of the appearance of the adult form." "We are aware of the present tendency towards acceptance of more liberal standards and we are also aware of the dangers of too rapid change. It is our view that the Act as well as the community requires us to keep a balance between necessary protection and individual liberty."

The nudist movement appreciates this liberal and fair attitude and as a result is pleased to accede to the request from so many of our readers that we display the courage of our convictions and print natural pictures of people as we know them in our well-conducted clubs.

But let us make it quite clear that it will never be our intention to exploit this concession, as is done by some publishers in the world today. Official nudism is, and (we hope) always will be, a dignified approach to the unclothed body and all our pictures will be in the best taste and unlikely to offend any but the most prudish. However, until the stock of photos that have already been retouched is used up, it will be a little while before we can publish a completely natural edition. We do hope, in the meantime, the change-over will be appreciated by all our readers.

In conclusion, just a note to our hundreds of Australian readers. Your Customs authorities would not approve this forward step and we therefore have to go to the extra expense of providing you with a retouched edition. When you can persuade them to adopt a more liberal attitude we will be happy to forward to you the same edition that most of the rest of the world is receiving."

It was not long thereafter that the Australian authorities changed their minds, all except Queensland which still today will not accept this magazine.

A change in cover layout occurred in June 1971 (#59), this time lasting until August 1976 (#80), and this latter style was maintained until a complete change in style, size, format and layout took place with issue number 96 in March 1981. The price by this time had gone through 2/- (20 cents), from 1963 to 1967, 30 cents from then until 1971 when it increased to 50 cents, and then through various stages to reach $1.70 per copy.

The June 1979 edition included the notation 'Incorporating Australian Nudist News' which from then on became a regular part of the cover name.

Editors and Business Managers, who incidentally are unpaid officers of the Federation, and fulfil their tasks mainly for the sake of the movement and the pleasure and satisfaction they get out of the work, have quite obviously, purposely and quite rightly so considered the requirements of the potential purchaser and of the 99 issues so far, and 62 with photographs on the front cover, 55 of these have featured the fair sex. Single colour was replaced with full colour on the front cover with issue number 50, and this was extended to the back cover with issue number 61, with full colour 'centrefolds' appearing in the following issue. While full frontal females became regulars from the 81st issue in December 1976, this has not yet been extended to adult males; again a reflection on the standards acceptable to the general public.

Several popular features such as 'Talking to Women', and the 'Junior Section' were regular throughout the 50's, 60's and early 70's, but these then gave way to ad hoc articles from irregular contributors containing a 'message' more than anything else. At one stage the magazine paid for photographs published, but due to lack of finances this was dropped after a short period, to be replaced recently with NZNF prizes for best photograph and best contribution in any one year. However one regular feature which has been maintained throughout the whole time the magazine has been published has been the Club Notes section, which like the 'Letters to the Editor' is generally well received by readers. Advertisements from Clubs, and other suitable parties have been accepted ever since issue number 20 (Summer 1960).

Considering then the Editors of the Magazine, since its inception in 1956 the publication has been ably guided by 9 different Editors. The basic style, presentation and content has not changed to any great extent, the articles reflecting the trends and social comment of the time. The aim of the magazine to present the nudist image to Club member and non Club member continues unabated and as vigorously as ever. In its 100 issues and 25 years of existence it has contributed much to the nudist movement here in New Zealand and Australia in particular, and the whole world in general.

There is no reason to believe that we will not see at least another 100 issues of this well respected magazine. Well done little acorn; welcome mighty Oak.

From the Past ...

After one hundred issues of the N.Z. Naturist the following article looks back. The extracts from a selection covering the 25 years of magazine publication gives an idea of how far the movement has come since the bold step was taken to promote the naturist movement to the outside world.

Magazines with unretouched illustrations have not been allowed to circulate in England, and recent copies of the Danish Sun and Health International Edition were seized, We have received a photostat copy of a letter from H. M. Customs and Excise in London withdrawing the seizures and indicating that there will be no import prohibition in the future, provided the illustrations conform to the pattern already approved.

Erik Holm, the publisher, hopes to have these magazines on the news stands in Britain by next year. To quote Mr Holm, "An historic event in British Naturism". We heartily concur and look forward to the day when we can boast of equal consideration from the Government of New Zealand.

We have received a letter from a B.S.B.A. member in England who is trying to form a Nudist Tape Recording Group, the aim of which is to seek conversational contacts, via the medium of tapes, with nudists in other parts of the world. Anyone interested should write to this office. (#29)

AN "UNWILLING EXILE"

As an ex-foundation member of one of the leading clubs and one who is temporarily (I hope) unable to take an active part in club membership, I wish to take this opportunity of congratulating those responsible for the production of the magazine, and for the continuing improvement in its presentation ... it can now be said to have truly "come of age". The magazine and its news means a lot to unwilling exiles such as myself and is the bridge by which we can keep in contact with the nudist movement. Keep up the good work. (#37)

THE SMALLEST WITH THE MOSTEST

Let me congratulate you on your fine magazine. I subscribe to "Solar" our own Australian magazine and also buy an English one, whenever possible. I have purchased one American magazine of this type also.

At the last meeting of the NZSA Executive, two important decisions were made, aligning ourselves with similar associations overseas. One was to affirm our stand against racial discrimination and the other to plant the idea in the public's mind that nude sea bathing is not only beneficial, but is pleasant as well. New Zealand is far behind some countries in the world where nude bathing has been accepted practice for many years and its popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. People from all over Europe congregate on these beaches by the thousands in the summer and visitors from Great Britain and USA are helping to swell the crowds in ever-increasing numbers. The newcomer soon overcomes that initial embarrassment and feels, to his delight that nude people can romp and play together without sexual urges or demoralising thoughts at all. Furthermore, because of its universal acceptance, "Peeping Toms" and other sightseers are seldom encountered, all of which proclaims a state of mind, freed from convention, to the lasting benefit of all involved. Are nudists presumptuous to claim their attitude towards the human body is advanced? We think it is quite normal to accept the body in its unclothed state and for ladies and gentlemen to see and be seen like this in proper circumstances and under organised control such as is experienced in our clubs.

There is nothing more certain than that these ideas, which today are largely misunderstood, will be commonly accepted in years to come. Admittedly old ideas die hard, but if we face the facts as we know them today, we must admit times are changing and it may not be such an impossibility for nudity to become less surprising and certainly less of the mystery that convention forces it to be at present. My husband and I were on our yacht in the Sounds when we came to a nice secluded beach. We anchored the yacht and decided to swim ashore. As there were no other boats in sight, we didn't bother with swimming costumes, so stripped and dived in. On reaching the beach we found it warm and free of sand flies (for the moment) so thought we would stay and sunbathe. We thought it would be quite safe, because if any other vessel approached we would hear the engine and could swim back to the yacht in plenty of time.

Startled, we look around to see a sailing boat a few yards offshore with a group of smiling young men in the cockpit. My husband dived in and joined the young men in a drink, but I spent an embarrassing time on the beach trying to keep myself covered from the admiring gaze of the young men. Eventually my husband swam ashore with a costume and a towel, but I refused to go aboard the strange yacht. I was far too embarrassed to face those strangers knowing they had seen me nude. (#47)

We are very pleased to advise that the Australian Naturist Federation has now been admitted to affiliation of the International Naturist Federation.

At the time of writing there are 15 clubs affiliated to the ANF and the remaining clubs are being encouraged to apply for affiliation. But the ANF recognised that too little is being done to form new clubs. Of the ones that are now in existence too many have large memberships, where some members travel long distances to attend, whereas the formation of new clubs would help spread the good word of naturism and make the present clubs more manageable. The ANF suggests anything up to 30 or 40 clubs as the ideal for Australia!

The country is full of surprising contrasts. In one State alone we know of one club with a broad attitude to cameras but their neighbour is the reverse. Sites vary widely, some of them being gorges with hardly any space for laying down anything flat. Knowing what we do of the problems of acquiring land in New Zealand we do not envy our brothers across the Tasman in trying to obtain land for new clubs. (#55)

Recently, in widely circulating New Zealand and Australian newspapers and magazines, there have been pictures and stories about "Jaybirds". Apparently it was considered news that some women don't bother to wear clothes when doing their housework. People are asking if it is some new fad, and if it has anything to do with the organised nudism described in this magazine.

It seems a woman wrote to Ann Landers' advice column wondering how many other women besides herself left off their clothes while doing housework and suggested jaybirds as a name for those who did. This was picked up by US newspapers and Newsweek early last year ('66), and then by newspapers and magazines all over the world. There is now even an organisation in California using the name Jaybirds' Anonymous. They encourage the idea of informal nudity at home with family and friends "of similar positive views on the subject of personal nudity" in their magazines, which also report in pictures and text the activities of organized social nudist clubs. The boom in New Zealand's nudist movement was highlighted by the record attendance of sun club members at the New Zealand Sunbathing Association's 18th national rally held at Oranui in Auckland, from 31st December to 4th January.

At the height of the rally during the sweltering temperatures of the summer heat wave, about 350 adults were present on the Auckland Outdoor Health Club's grounds. Together with their children, from tiny tots to older teenagers, the total number of rallyists was close to 600. Thirteen of the 15 sun clubs in New Zealand were represented at the rally. The Auckland Clubs together had the biggest contingent present, but Wellington and Hawkes Bay were present in strength too.

The host club had done an outstanding job in preparing a large number of new caravan sites, supplied with power points, plus many extra tent sites. The developed areas of the 26-acre site in the Henderson Valley, just north of Auckland city, presented a picture of constant activity throughout the five-day gathering. (#54)

My usual article about the free beaches will not be very long this time. The reason is very simple, lack of news. Our submission is going through the mills of the government. These mills are grinding slowly but surely somewhere our submission is considered among the many other submissions. We cannot do a thing about it. It is hoped that by the time you read this the proposals for the alterations to the Police Offences Act will have been presented to Parliament.

These discussions can only be preliminary as long as we do not have the backing of the law. But in this way we can prepare ourselves for the official approach and no time will be lost. Think now about the difficulties that could be encountered. For example, how do we prevent hooliganism? How do we keep our image of serious and responsible nudists? Does the answer lie in the appointment of honorary wardens chosen from our membership? If so what powers should they have? (#68)

   DECEMBER 1974

In an attempt to let all members of the movement know better what is going on amongst the elected executive of the NZSA, I have asked the editor to allow us some space in the magazine to "air" our actions and thoughts during the coming year. It is hoped that this will stimulate more discussion around clubs and therefore involving each and every one of us.

I feel one important point worth discussing right now is that a few (very few) clubs or their leaders question the advantage of belonging to the National Body and this question is purely for them to decide. However, if they decide to stay out of the umbrella then I earnestly request all affiliated clubs to deny them any privileges, such as: visiting or using our grounds, attending Rallies or meetings, issuing any form of passports. Any special rates of privileges in the magazine such as free listing in the club directory etc. plus help with any legal advice or Parliamentary representation should be denied them. (#78)

There has been a great deal written and even more said, on the subject of nudists and publicity. Many people who are members of a sun club, nudist club, call it what you will, seem to have the impression that if it were known by their friends that they belonged to such an organisation they would be complete outcasts from society. Some people have the idea that they would not be permitted to continue in their chosen occupation if it were known what they did at weekends. "I would get the sack immediately if the boss found out," was the comment of one club member when discussing the subject.

Now some people, because of their occupation, have some cause to be cautious. I don't mean they should keep their club membership a secret, but they have to be a bit careful just how people get to know about their nudist activities. Schoolteachers, for instance, could find things difficult if the children learned the "terrible secret" in the wrong way. (#62)

SEPTEMBER 1973

The NZSA organized a Free Beach Rally at Port Ohope on the 9th and 10th November 1974. Our hosts Ken and Lois England had reserved their whole motor camp for nudists only. A lot of writing and discussion with the Whakatane County Council, The Commissioner of Crown Lands, the Port Ohope Domain Board and the Port Ohope Development Committee and the Police department for the district had preceded this very successful weekend. Nearly all the North Island clubs were represented with one or more couples. We saw a gathering of approx. 150 nudists in tents, caravans, bus and motel units. The NZSA was represented by our very active North Island vice-president Ian

Fairbrother.

The weather could have been better, but although the sun in all its warmth was only occasionally there on Saturday, on Sunday afternoon it really did its best. The wide strand and its very gentle sloping grade into the sea made it very safe for even the smallest child. (#73)

Nudists not only get more complete sun tans but seem to have lower blood pressure than people who wear clothes, according to the central Maryland chapter of the American Heart Association.

A spokesman for the association said tests performed on members of the Pine Trees nudist camp in Crownsville, Maryland, over the past two years showed that nudists had fewer cases of high blood pressure than the national average.

While the national average was 17%, the 1977 sampling found 7% of the 163 nudists tested had high blood pressure. In 1976, he said, 2% of 150 nudists tested had high blood pressure.

One member of the association suggested that "the only reason we can think of is that members are less inhibited. They have a tendency to lower blood pressures because of a lack of inner pressures and a feeling of total freedom." (#85)

   MARCH 1979

As the saying goes - "if its old, its new" and that may help to explain why some of you regular readers may have been experiencing a sensation of "deja vu" with the recent publication in the daily press that various Local Councils, Regional Authorities and other ad hoc bodies are going to consider again the question regarding and possible authorisation of "Clothing Optional Areas" which is the new euphemism for the old expression "Free Beaches".

In the recent past the F.B.G. has been in correspondence with no less than 17 council, authorities, cities and counties with the suggestion that C.O.A.'s time had come and could they please designate a stretch of coastline officially. This latest surge of enthusiasm was partly generated by the news that Wellington City Council seemed to be on the verge of a major breakthrough in our favour and we did not want the local authorities to feel left out of the scramble to grant C.O.A.'s once the initial step was taken. Alas and alack Wellington City's Councillors voted against the proposal much to the disappointment of many good keen persons. (#95)

People today are a little [more] broadminded and slowly the Victorian attitudes are going back where everything was once, under the back stairs! I welcome the slow changes - towards sanity and cleanliness - but I do not think that the photographic poses in your magazine promote this. In fact, in my opinion they are the opposite.

Many years ago I knew a senior instructor at an art school and I can't forget what he told me. "Give total nudity, then I can told me. He said "Give total nudity, then I can teach my art and no-one take any notice, but put one half inch of cloth in the wrong place and my teaching is impossible. The students cannot get on with their work." This from a very experienced, sincere, mature instructor in the pictorial arts.

So I say to you and your team there, please! please! aim at the natural, not the false double standards of pretending to be normal, but in fact of being coy and conveying pictorially what is deliberately being hidden. I do not mean porn - just normal decent open behaviour as depicts the true naturist movement. (#80)

As the newly elected editor of this magazine it is my task to formulate forward policy for the N.Z. Naturist - to me the movement is at a stage where it must progress - by the acceptance of the Free Beach Group Inc.

I don't find any big bogy hiding behind their numbers - the thing is that they are nudists just the same as us, maybe they practice their brand a little differently. But what are our aims? The first thing in our constitution which is accepted by all clubs in the N.Z.N.F. "is for the promotion and furtherment of nudism."

It may occur, but I think not, that some clubs may go under but that will be due to the apathy of their own members, not due to Free Beach.

Therefore the N.Z. Naturist will continue in the same vein as the previous three years and will promote nudism in all its forms. (#90)

   JUNE 1981

This year 1981 almost witnessed the establishment of New Zealand's first legal Free Beach. The Manukau City Council debated whether or not to bestow "Official Status" on a small beach near Kawakawa Bay, which is about 20 miles east of Auckland, almost on the Firth of Thames. This delightful spot, known to the locals as Dynamite Bay, would have been perfect for our purpose and it even has the benefit of that catchy title. We were fortunate in finding a sympathetic group of councillors who believed the time had come to give a lead to others. We were not so fortunate in that all,the tired old arguments against nudity in public were bought out of retirement, and dusted off and used against us.

This meant that the voting in full council was unfavourable to us but I do know that we have retained the support of a liberal and progressive group inside the Manukau City Council and to them we are grateful.

The outlook for the future as we see it remains as optimistic as ever and devotees of nudity, and even more importantly, the yet to be converted potential nudists, have much to enjoy in this land of clean air, clean beaches and clean living. (#97)

AN INVITATION

There are a large number of people in N.Z. males, females, mums and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, or families as a whole who do consider that there is nothing wrong with social nudism, but for one reason or another do riot or cannot join a recognised Sun/Nudist Club. They would, should there be an opportunity support the movement without the necessity of having to join a Club.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has now introduced into its organisation a "Supporter" member group, and you are very cordially invited to join this group.

For a small annual subscription any family or individual can become a supporter member, thus indicated in a tangible way support for the movement, and in return getting proper and official information on 'what it's all about'.

Like any properly run organisation there will be some rules, and these are set out on the application form. Simply they will be:

(a) Age 18 or over

(b) Not a member of a Club (Free Beach Group excepted - if you join a club at a later date your membership automatically lapses.)

(c) Payment of an annual subscription.

And what will you receive in turn?

Initially you will receive a receipt for your money, together with an official NZNF sticker suitable for car window or bumper; a 'Bare With Us' sticker, a year's subscription to the N.Z. 'NATURIST' and most importantly an INF/NZNF Membership Card endorsed "SUPPORTER", which will open the door to many Sun Clubs throughout the world including some N.Z. ones, and concession rates at these clubs. In due course a supporters Bulletin will be issued containing many interesting items and up-to-date information for the member on what's happening in Nudism, and associated matters of interest.

ALL applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Well now that you know something of the scheme you may like to join us.

The annual subscription has been set at $10 plus a $2 application fee per unit: i.e. individual or family.

A stamped addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1359, Wellington will get you an application form.

PINEGLADES RALLY 81-82

Thank goodness it's all over and things have settled down to a much more relaxed way of life.

Nudists from all parts of New Zealand (almost), and some from Australia and U.S.A. converged on Pineglades, the grounds of the Canterbury Sun Club for the 30th National Rally held from December 29 through to January 2, 1982.

The numbers were considerably down from previous rallies held at Pineglades, but this could be due to inflation and the high cost of dragging one's family down south to the Mainland.

One of the functions of the Rally is to bring together the Executives and Club Delegates whose job it is to elect the officers who will help make the N.Z.N.F. run smoothly for the new year. The Executive Meeting was held on December 28, 1981 and there were several changes to the membership of the Executive, followed by discussion on the future direction of the nudist movement in New Zealand. The major decisions from this meeting were reported to all members at the General Meeting which was held on the last day of the Rally (if you had good hearing).

December 29, Opening Day, dawned fine and dry and after the Rally Organiser spoke about dogs, trees, hygiene and fires (but not necessarily in that order) the Rally was officially opened by our N.Z.N.F. President, Peter James. Sports got underway with a vengeance immediately following the opening ceremony. Miniten, volleyball, tenniquoits, table-tennis, swimming, chess, darts and bowls were fiercely contested by young and old throughout the following four days, fortunately uninterrupted by bad weather.

Each evening, functions were held in the large marquee starting with a Welcoming Party where old acquaintances were brought together and new friendships started. The following night a Wine and Cheese Party was held where the non-active sportspersons felt free to indulge until the wee small hours. All this partying built up to a climax with the New Years Eve Party with a theme of 'Heavenly Bodies' producing some rather interesting costumes, the prize being won by a rather modest group from the host club. A generous supper of steaks, beef dishes and salads provided strength for the celebrations to carry on until the dawning of the new day and year.

The evening of the Grand Concert showed exceptional talent (apart from "Big Pink John" in drag in the "Cinderella and the Prince's Ball" sketch). I think everyone had a good laugh, including the people who had the mickey taken out of them.

The morning after the Farewell Party a convoy of cars proceeded to a secluded beach on Banks Peninsula for a Free Beach day. Unfortunately, the sun did not appear for long periods and the water was cold, but the rain did hold off until we had departed. Several games of beach volleyball were played and a large collection effort went into the mussels which were taken back to the club for a delicious barbeque tea treat. Everyone enjoyed a nice relaxing day which was the start of the wind-down after a very successful friendly Rally.

We look forward to renewing all those friendships when everyone attends the next Rally which is to be held in Auckland at the A.O.H.C. grounds.

CONFESSIONS OF A RALLY ATTENDER

MONDAY 28 DECEMBER

Dear Diary,

Well at last we arrived, hot and tired, but looking forward to the

next week. Good trip down from the North, even a smooth trip across on the Ferry wonder who it was said they wouldn't be running in time for us to go home. If we had brought a radio with us I'd turn it on. Loved the coast around Kaikoura, but a little boring north of Christchurch; not used to all that flat country. Warm welcome at the registration caravan, where we were checked in, given our tags and allocated a site. Poor old us, our tent right in amongst the caravans, hope the others don't think we are as poor as we look. Sun shining so immediately stripped off, and became one of the crowd. No problems putting the tent up, ground a bit hard though. Amazing the number of offers to help. Thought the kids might stop and help, but the pool must have been too inviting. Everything in its appointed place so the wife and I had a wander round. Lots of friendly and familiar faces, so didn't get right around anyway. Noticed the odd game of volleyball and miniten in progress, no doubt warming up for the more serious matches. The wise old sages were still meeting in the Clubhouse reflecting on the past and planning for the future. I wonder how many organisations can run their Annual General Meetings with those present in a state of complete undress. We roughed up enough for a more than satisfactory dinner then into the main tent for a welcome and get-together. Pity about all the tables and chairs, restricting the mingling. A few beers, rums, cokes and what ever else we felt like, then into the tent, cup of coffee and sleep.

TUESDAY 29 DECEMBER

Dear Diary,

A bit cloudy, but a sneaky deceptive sun up there above. Got a little burnt today so must remember to be a bit more careful. Those lovely little chimes gently woke us around the 8 mark, and so we together with the other 300 here were informed that this was the start of the Rally. Sports underway-really I wonder what all the sporting fuss is all about, can't we just settle down and relax, after all this is our holiday. Maybe its the friendly rivalry between clubs, maybe its the numerous trophies that can be won, maybe its just that this it what Rallies are all about. The boss of this NZNF racket, Peter somebody or other, officially opened the Rally not too much later than the advertised time, while Ian, the local boss tells us what to do or not do in the case of fires, or was it dogs. Then everything gets under way, particularly after the cup of tea. See a few mums doing the washing (nudists getting dirty clothes really does happen), dads doing the dishes, kids doing lots of things. Come the afternoon the sports quietened down, so we just circulated, sat and talked. Later popped into the Club shop and stocked up. Actually we became bone lazy and dozed off for a while. This evening the Club put on its wine and cheese evening. Plenty of chairs and tables, particularly for the early ones; wine was late, cheese even later, but we all made up for this. Tent, coffee, bed and sleep.

WEDNESDAY 30 DECEMBER

Wakey, wakey go the chimes right on the dot of 8. 'Wal, Pete you are required on the miniten court NOW' blares the public address system. I wonder why they chose chimes; better than that damn rooster they had at Gisborne, or the clocks they had at Wellington. A fun filled day of sport, leisure and sun. Noticed that we had official representatives of our Australian Sun Clubs here, and later in the day a couple of yanks arrived. Must be a bit of an international gathering. I understand the Americans are having discussions with our top doggies (sorry Ian) regarding tourism and nudist publications. Probably hear more of this at a later date. Saw a couple of good games at the volleyball court today, and also it looks as if the tenniquoit champs might have a hard time to retain their titles. Had a good look at the tags people were wearing today, and saw that members from Southern Sun & Health, The Orchard Club, South Canterbury, Nelson, Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Rotorua, South Auckland, Auckland Sun and North Shore at least were here - plus our hosts the Canterbury Sun Club. Got pretty involved in the tenniquoits today, as a spectator. About 60 of us popped over to Prebbleton this evening for a wine and dine. The publican hardly knew what struck him - out early, home early, cup of coffee, bed.

THURSDAY 31 DECEMBER

Dear Diary,

Week seems to be flying, only just seem to get to sleep and those chimes tell us its time to get up. Once again hardly saw the kids, no doubt playing on the trampoline or the swings, or the slide, or the flying fox, or the fort, or just generally enjoying themselves. Its amazing how they can strike up friendships, so we really have to be prepared at meal times for all those extras that tag along. Pop around the ground from time to time though just to make sure they are OK, and that they are behaving themselves, after all this is a family affair. 'Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun' seems to sum up this Rally - every man and his dog out either playing sport or enjoying watching it.

Be it darts, chess, bowls or the others they are all very interesting. Spoke to someone today who had recently joined a Club and this was their first Rally. Really enjoying it too. Some impressive sun-tans around, plus a few pink bums and boobs. Hot shower, another perfect tea, then to the New Years Eve dos. A regular feature at these Rallies, but I wonder what our Australian and American guests thought of it. Great band, this one even gave us time to talk from time to time. Super supper, somewhat unusual in that it was out-of-doors. Able to grab a steak and cook it ourselves on the outdoor Club barbeque. Plenty of things to go with it too. Saw the new year in, kissed almost everybody. Forgot the coffee, bed and sleep.

FRIDAY 1 JANUARY

Dear Diary,

Must remember to make those New Year resolutions one day, but too tired today. Lovely hosts here; let us sleep in to 9.00 before sounding the chimes. Very quiet voice on the loudspeaker, probably had a hangover. Sports underway about 10a.m. Some finals today, and others shaping up well. Hard time keeping up with the finals and the semi-finals, so were ducking and diving all over the place. Very warm again so have got a good tan on. Had some difficulties fitting in the meals between the sports, or was it the sports between the meals. Swimming sports this afternoon, great fun, not taken too seriously and that's how it should be. Wonder if the times are faster with no togs on. Once again took the opportunity to look around the grounds. Noticed how well kept it was, and how spacious. Plenty of room for growth. Wish the place was ours. Had a good chat to quite a few today, most of them seem to be looking forward to the Rally in Auckland next year. Come 8 pm. we turned up at the concert in the main tent, popped a dollar in the bucket for the Percy Cousins Trust, and settled back for three hours of entertainment put on by the various clubs. Not so professional, but a great deal of fun. All sorts of skits and items to suit every taste. No prize for the best item and just as well, because it would be a pretty hard thing to judge, unlike the 'heavenly bodies' on New Year's Eve. From the laughter the kids enjoyed it a lot, and a couple of lively sing-a-longs went down well. Wound up around 11, so had our cup of coffee and then sleep.

SATURDAY 2 JANUARY

Dear Diary,

Sometimes I wonder if there is no rest for the wicked. This is the last day and they had to put those chimes on to wake us up at 8 again. Perhaps its just as well its the last day because we heard a rumour last night that those chimes might find themselves in the pool any morning now.

Plenty of excitement today, especially with the mini-ten and the volley-ball finals. The daily newsletter, even with its cryptic comments, told us it was going to be an exciting final day. Had to have a late breakfast or we would have missed one of the best games of volleyball we've seen for years. Last lot of washing out about midday, but in this weather it took a short time to dry. Must be the weather, or perhaps the company, anyway everybody has been nice and friendly, still smiling and talking. All the finalists were selected by midday, and about 2 o'clock we sat in amongst the trees for an open meeting and the presentation of prizes. Caught up with a few old friends again and had a chat or two. Our club did well with its prizes, so a few trophies going back over Cook Strait. The final dance this evening with a few goodbyes and see you again next year. Enjoyed our stay, enjoyed the rally, enjoyed the company, enjoyed the club, and so on. Even enjoyed the coffee. Bed and rest before going home tomorrow.

ANF CONVENTION AND RALLY REPORT

Helios must really have put their best foot forward for this Rally. It was mostly cloudy, not very warm (icy cold we Queenslanders would say) but apart from a little sprinkle, it only rained heavily one night. As always, the sports part of the rally was hotly contested by young and old alike.

The Convention meeting itself went very smoothly and harmoniously and finished in record time, perhaps due to the fact that we had to be out of the Clubhouse by 7.30 because of the planned Disco for the young people. The last items on the agenda were conducted on the lawn.

Major changes in the sporting program occurred with the inclusion of Petanque in the "Club of the Year Trophy" for both Seniors and juniors, as a Round Robin tournament. This was extremely pleasing to our out-going Vice President Bernard Mentink because he introduced the game.

As our Executive Officers hold their positions for two years Peter Rowsell is still our President, Mike and Rosemary Severs did not see re-election and Louk Mentink and Deann Angel were elected. Our new Vice-President is Mary Weston who is also Youth Liaison Officer, Miklos Tifan was ratified as Treasurer, Supporter Secretary is again Keith Murfet, Public Relations Officer is Maureen Hamilton-Anderson, who has both the gift of the gab and the pen. The Editors of the ANF Bulletin are John and Judy Schmidt of Darwin. We are a well spread out lot this time.

A post-delegates meeting was held the following afternoon with many other people participating and an animated discussion on various topics took place. The main one of these seemed to be the new rule that no new competition can be started after 1 p.m. so that most sports finish before 2 o'clock, leaving the afternoon free for relaxation. Not every one agreed and the rule could be slightly amended next year to include "weather permitting".

A special mention must be made of Lotte and her band of helpers for all the canteen goodies that helped pile up the kilos in some of us. Thank you Helios for a well run raIIy".

THE SUPPORTER SCHEME

Interested in nudism? If you're not already a club member then perhaps you've been to a free beach, or have just enjoyed the freedom of nudism at home with your family or your friends.

So you enjoy the nudist way of life. But maybe there aren't any clubs near where you live, or perhaps you don't want to join one. For you there is the Supporter Scheme.

Currently Supporter membership costs $12 per family unit per year. For that, Supporters receive a Supporter Passport, which allows them to visit those Clubs which support the scheme. Each Club's policy on Supporters is specified in the Australia and New Zealand Nudist Club Guide.

Supporters also receive the "New Zealand Naturist" each quarter, flown out from New Zealand to the A.N.F. and then forwarded on to you. With it, we send you each quarter the "Supporters News", giving details of Supporter activities and news. You are also entitled to purchase an I.N.F. passport for travel overseas, and for an extra $1.00 per year you can also take out a subscription to the A.N.F. Bulletin which gives news of the clubs and the nudist scene in Australia and overseas.

Sounds like good value? For membership or enquiries, write to:

New Zealand and Australian Club News

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC.

With some of us at the Christchurch rally, several families staying at the Hawkes Bay club, and others cruising the North Island, visitors calling in from other clubs, from the U.S.A. and Australia, found a very quiet club in Wellington over the holidays. Last Sunday however, the club was back to normal again, with hundreds on the main lawn and around the pools, and another hundred or so spread around the miniten courts and the various caravan areas, all the familiar faces back again, added by many new faces, and some visitors from the Manawatu club, who could not believe their eyes at the multitude of bare bodies.

The new barbeque area proved a success and also looks very attractive, and is still being improved upon, while the lounge in our hall was very useful for impromptu get-together's of campers this summer. More of our members are beginning to realise, the club is theirs for what they make of it, and lawns and tidying is shared by a few more. Here is hoping that the winter months ahead will be used by many to improve grounds and facilities, for an even better season next summer.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

The Club Christmas Party saw the first social function in our new clubhouse. It is going to be a real asset to our club. Since Christmas we have had a bulldozer in to level new areas for camping, and to consolidate the area for the miniten court.

NATURI N.S.W.

Is natures paradise; it offers so much. Native trees, fresh air, and sunbathing in multi-various forms - from glittering swimming pool, sauna, games courts, nude bush walks to clubhouse, plus a children's play area.

Our membership is reserved in numbers, and now, more family members or couples are invited to join us. We are in the Hornsby/Gosford area.

What can compare with the enjoyment of a fine sunny day or weekend of being able to dispose with hot restrictive clothing and feel the warmth, health giving rays of the sun on ones whole body, where safety measures can be taken to avoid sunburn. We believe that complete exposure to the fresh air and being able to rest and sunbathe where bright sunlight filters through tall gum trees at "NATURI" is the greatest factor in promoting and retaining radiant health.

Naturism or nudism, is a spontaneous expression of freedom, both of body and of mind, and is the antithesis of repression of any kind. A sunbathing people could not help but be happy people - and nude sunbathing sets free all inhibitions lurking in the sub-conscious mind.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

Fantastic is the only word we can think of to describe our interclub sports day the other weekend. Fantastic weather, a brilliant hot summers day, quite a change from the pre Christmas wet weekends. Fantastic turnout from our neighbouring clubs, who not only played challenging sports, but enjoyed our blossoming grounds and refreshing pool. After so many planned sports days that have been ruined by wet weekends it was so pleasing to have such a large turnout at our club. The grounds have seen many long hours of working bees, with the new growth giving the club new shade and protection this year.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY INC.

Once again, Hi to you all from Mooloo Land.

We have enjoyed our Christmas parties, seen the New Year in and are all well tanned. Our club is a hive of activity. More has been done to our clubhouse and the water supply has had quite a shock - our bulldozer driver has been back! The pool has had some extraordinary activities in it, with some fool walking through it with his boots on! Our sports teams have been to South Auckland but got rained out. Other clubs will see more of them during the season.

We out did all other clubs at Ohope, we don't quite know what happened to all those famous B.O.P. fisherman!

February will bring our next open day and also our annual visitors sports day which we hope will be well attended by other clubs. With all the long weekends coming up we will be on the club grounds more often. So you know where to find us. Keep an eye on our club newsletters as we just might be at Matamata this winter.

AOHC NEWS

Summer has been and gone and what a sizzler it was. Our campers and many members who were present appeared to have enjoyed the best season for some years.

We hope these conditions will also apply when we host the "Rally" in late December. (Further details will appear in the "NZ Naturist" throughout the year.) The social and sports scene during this period was another success story beginning with the New Years Eve 'do' which was a real boomer now that we have our B.B.Q. near the Clubhouse.

Top team activities followed with 2 days of hilarious fun in which all age groups participated. Excellent conditions prevailed once again for our inter club sports weekend where some exciting Volley Ball and miniten games were played in a very friendly atmosphere. Some further events which were organised for members were a car rally and a nude cruise for 20 members out on the Hauraki Gulf. Well, that's all the news for the moment

ROTORUA SUN CLUB

Hello there! We are well underway in the development of our new grounds since the last report, the logs have rolled, stumps removed, ground levelled, grass sown- all mainly achieved under that one thing we sun-lovers don't appreciate too well - RAIN! Apart from the ridiculous conditions in which the work was carried out - many a laugh was heard - and the grass managed a reasonable hold. The plants and shrubs members have planted have shown their appreciation of the rain.

On the other side of development things have been happening in high gear. Firstly the essentials - then we purchased a concrete water tank and after a few problems with the pump we have managed to have water on tap and showers (not for drinking). The swimming pool is in and proving popular. The children's play area is fairly well established.

The enthusiasm shown by the majority of the members has been heartwarming - without everyone's efforts - work wise or by providing materials - things could not have happened so smoothly. A special thanks to everyone whatever they have done.

CORIO VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB

Corio members have been busy the past few months with various activities on the go.

Club members were interviewed by a new radio station, this proved excellent and went on air in November. A full page article on two club families was in the local paper in their regular 'Lifestyle' feature. An excellent free way of promotion. Our yearly Blood Donor programme was once again supported and many members gave their 'pint'. An open day is planned for February - bring a friend to your club. More news on that next time.

Sport competitions have been organized at the club and very much enjoyed by all. This has encouraged members who don't usually play much sport to participate. Members have also participated in the state associations sporting activities and hold trophies for senior squash, junior miniten, junior tennis, junior table tennis, senior miniten and junior racquet ball girls.

At the recent A.N.F. convention the small band of Corio members were winners of junior miniten, junior table tennis and came equal first for Junior Club of the Year.

Corio's entry in the A.N.F. flag competition was successful and will be adopted as the official A.N.F. flag.

Social events have included - bushwhackers dance, film night, hippie evening, auction, counter tea at local country pub, pyjama party, and a ski trip is planned for August/September - last years being so enjoyable. Swim nights begin again in April through to November. A resuscitation demonstration was given at the club and was most interesting and informative. Members were able to practice on models, Working bees and general maintenance is continuing as it must in all clubs.

Members approved a new club badge late last year and this is now available. We also have our own club brochure.

The Youth Group have many activities planned for the first few months of 1982 - pool party, bike ride home from club, mini golf tournament and a walk to the local old gold mining town of Steiglitz.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

Hi! from the sunny Bay of Plenty and I am glad to inform you that our Club is still here even though we haven't appeared in this column for some time. Our members have really excelled this season as far as work put into projects and working bees to tidy our grounds and I am sure any visitors would find it a real pleasure to visit. We have recently purchased a 15 x 3 Para pool for cold swimming on these hot days and also our hot tub is working well for relaxation in the evenings. A Mini Golf Course has been established and with a lot of other sports equipment that has been purchased, for those who don't want to soak up the sun all day, there is plenty to do. We have had a few social events including a variety evening, children's and adults Xmas parties and also a New Year celebration. For those prospective members in the Tauranga area we now have a postal box in Te Puke. It is P.O. Box 387, Te Puke and feel free to direct your enquiries there otherwise Box 476, Whakatane. To all those members and visitors who stayed at the grounds over the Xmas! New Year period, it was really great to see you. Enjoy the sunshine and hopefully we'll have many more days of it.

NUDIST ASSOC. OF VICTORIA

The Nudist Association of Victoria was formed in 1974 to promote the nudist movement throughout Victoria and safeguard the collective interests of the member clubs. There are seven affiliated clubs at present, and 11 clubs in Victoria altogether. The role and function of the N.A.V. has changed over the years. Advertising in November 1976 proved unsuccessful so the NAV, recommended to the clubs to do their own promotions if required. It was again stated later that the N.A.V. do not need to advertise, nor do they need a Public Relations Officer.

The N.A.V. participated in the Melbourne Moomba Procession in 1977, 78 and 79, but due to change of format and requirements by the Moomba Board this is not supported now. At present we do have a Public Relations Officer and an advertising campaign is in full swing. We are registered with the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation and have participated in a promotion at the Royal Melbourne Show. The Free Beach Campaign within the N.A.V. has been low key in the past but more so recently owing to changing attitudes, we now have sent correspondence to the appropriate Government personnel supporting free beaches and urging immediate action in Victoria to legalize a free area declared so by a local council. Further action is also planned. The member clubs of the N.A.V. support the Sun Toy Appeal and an Annual Blood Donor Program as a community effort and promotional exercise.

The main function of the N.A.V. still seems to be that of promoting sport amongst the member clubs and official sports days are organized by host clubs throughout the year. Sports played are squash, racquet ball, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, petanque, miniten and swimming. Senior and Junior events are played for each sport and the winning club receives a perpetual trophy, and a miniature to keep as their own.

Who knows, the next few years may see more changes within this organization to - whatever the clubs' see as the role and function of the N.A.V. at the time.
