EDITORIAL

As the newly elected editor of this magazine it is my task to formulate forward policy for the N.Z. Naturist - to me the movement is at a stage where it must progress - by the acceptance of the Free Beach Group Inc.

I don't find any big bogy hiding behind their numbers - the thing is that they are nudists just the same as us, maybe they practice their brand a little differently. But what are our aims?

The first thing in our constitution which is accepted by all clubs in the N.Z.N.F. "is for the promotion and furtherment of nudism."

It may occur, but I think not, that some clubs may go under but that will be due to the apathy of their own members, not due to Free Beach.

Therefore the N.Z. Naturist will continue in the same vein as the previous three years and will promote nudism in all its forms.

THE 27th ANNUAL N.Z.N.F. RALLY John Groen P.R.O.

It is certainly true, that events can have their own character. The character of the recent rally in Christchurch was definitely very friendly. Whereas in previous rallies the tension of the sports competitions had been very noticeable towards the end, nothing of the kind was felt in Pineglades. Of course the weather was a great ally. Fine weather prevailed, without it getting too hot. Sports were played between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 4 and 6 p.m. The afternoons were filled with entertainment from a Maori-group, a magician, the Wizard of Christchurch and nude parachutists while each night was party night in the "Big Top" until the early hours for anyone who was able to keep on their feet.

While parents played their sports, the children were well looked after with games, storytelling and activities like pottery, co-ordination, treasure-hunts, housie and All-Stars-competitions. The Canterbury Sunclub, who hosted the rally, had done everything possible to make the period of the rally a time free from troubles. The water-system had been overhauled and more than 350,000 litres of high-quality water was used in the six days. Visitors were continuously reminded of the dangers of dehydration, and no case of illness was reported. An innovation was the presence of a St. John Ambulance-team during the hours of sport. Fortunately only few minor accidents had to be treated, although one Australian guest broke her arm when she slipped during the New Year's Eve celebrations.

A kitchen, staffed by eight people, prepared lunches each morning, which must have been a relief for the mothers, if the number of sales can be used as a gauge. Each day for a few hours the bar tent opened for the thirsty, whether this also could be seen as a relief for the mothers is not certain, but it surely kept their husbands out of their hair, while they cooked dinner.

Radio, television and newspapers were invited to several items on the programme and many nationwide saw the landing of three nude parachutists and the Wizard's Imperial Army fighting the Nudist Revolutionary Army on T.V. one News at 6p.m. on two evenings. Local radio and newspapers also reported on the rally several times, with photos on the front pages and interviews on the local news.

It became a real international rally with the participation of seven Australian families, who fitted in so well with the Kiwis, that many never would have known their nationality, were it not for that distinguishable accent. And then on the second-last day six men, their backs painted in the Red, White and Blue of The Netherlands, jogged onto the court, to dare the Rest of the World in a game of volleyball, enthusiastically assisted by six female freezing-workers, hoping for access to the Common Market. Somehow the game never came off the ground, but after the referee was dumped into the swimming pool it was off to the showers to scrub away the cracking paint.

The rally finished officially with a general meeting in which the gathering nearly unanimously instructed the N.Z.N.F. executive to work towards proportional votes for the Free Beach Group in the N.Z.N.F. With present membership this would give the group two votes. After the meeting, with trophies presented, it was time to get ready for the final party, with music from Horizon and Elvis (Barry) Presley. Next year Palmerston North? We hope so, but the members of that club still have to decide.

PINEGLADES RALLY By Mary and Ted Weston

For the first time in Australasia official representation between the New Zealand and Australian Nudist Federations took place at the 21st A.G.M. of the New Zealand Nudist Federation Inc. and the 27th National Rally of the same held at "Pineglades" the Canterbury Sun Club in Christchurch between December 28 and January 3, 1979.

Australian visitors including the two official representatives numbered five families from ACT. Club, one from Eureka Club, Queensland and one couple from Corio Valley Club, Victoria.

Arriving at "Pineglades" on the 27th the friendly reception at the registration tent was familiar to us. In the short space of 1½ hours we had met approximately 40 persons, enjoyed "good cheer" at the refreshment tent (an innovation we had not experienced before at any Australian rallies, and a most commendable idea as daily between 4 and 6 this venue brought the folk together, and certainly set the mood for the extremely friendly, relaxed rally it became), shared a meal with the N.Z.N.F. President Ian Fairbrother and his daughter Sue, and been settled into what was to become our "Happy Home" for the next seven nights. (Thank you Beryl and Norm - alias "Piney Bear").

Any doubts or uncertainties we previously held were certainly dispelled. We were "at home" with our fellow nudists in New Zealand and we knew we would thoroughly enjoy every moment - and we did.

The meeting of the N.Z.N.F. was held on December 28 with the President Ian Fairbrother welcoming delegates and observers and a special welcome to the Australians. We were impressed with Ian's fair and quiet chairmanship - and it was easy to see how he had been such a successful and popular Federation President over the past three years. Ably assisted with the dedicated and efficient support of Les Wellington, the Federation Secretary. After reading the report from the A.W.F. Secretary, Peter Rowsell, regret was expressed that our Federation meetings are held simultaneously, which prohibits present executive attending. As we were the immediate past A.N.F. executive, with a knowledge of the Australian nudist movement, we were in the position to participate in meaningful discussions with N.Z.N.F, executive and club members.

Appreciating that each rally is an individual "happening", and that all host clubs organisers do things differently, we can only assume that other New Zealand rallies have been somewhat similar to this one, weather permitting of course!

Canterbury Sun Club organisers and work team have to be highly commended for the tremendous effort put in to make the 27th national rally the success it was.

The programming was top class, whereby all could become involved, as each event be it sport, fun activities, entertainment, (of which there was plenty), official opening or whatever, all complemented each other and no one seemed to miss out. The special children's programme designed to make the kids feel part of it all, the nudist youth club participating in their own right, were all examples of the way the host club thought of everyone. We all know the children and youth are our clubs and nudist movement of the future and are so often overlooked or misunderstood. But not at this rally. Well done Canterbury!

A few of the "Piney" ideas we especially liked were, the daily news sheet delivered to each camper; the identity tags system; the emphasis on hygiene, health, and fire precaution; the shop and food take-away service; the St. Johns Ambulance officers daily attendance, which must have been reassuring for all; the wet canteen; and of course rally H.Q. - dong! dong! dong! dong! The parachute drop by three nude males was a spectacular beginning and received wide media coverage, as did other facets during the rally. The entertainment left nothing to be desired, also live bands - "Horizon" and "the Group" who played on three occasions, Hawaiian Party, polynesian festival complete with hangi and Maori dancing and visit of chief to offer peace, friendship and welcome to in this case the Australian "chief" from across the water. (There is no truth in the rumour that Ted was afraid, he was terrified!)

In closing, we extend to all New Zealand nudists the bond of friendship and companionship, and we earnestly hope that from now on reciprocal visits between our nudist clubs and federations will become common place, and that our association will grow as we hope the Australian wattle tree will grow that the Australian Nudist Federation presented to the host club.

You will all be made most welcome as we have been here.

TOURING ABROAD

I have just returned from a trip to California and Britain where I visited two nudist areas in California, three in England, and one in Wales.

On production of my International Passport, I was made most welcome everywhere.

My first stop was at Glen Eden Sun Club in California. A board at the turning on the main highway made it easy to find, only quarter of a mile (yes, I'll use the term miles, feet and °F as they are still used in the U.S.A. and Britain) along a good road, and situated at the mouth of a small canyon, about quarter of a mile wide.

An office at the entrance informed me that members pay $110 per year and $5.50 per visit. What do they get for this?

We drove 50 yards to one of the many parking areas. Each one had plenty of shade trees, and there were many caravans and mobile homes parked around, each in its own little area, and most of them obviously permanent as they were surrounded with pretty little gardens.

The only rule they asked us to observe was to wear the nudist uniform. As the temperature was over 90° we were only to happy to comply.

A long single storey building faced us, with no windows and just a small entrance door. Once through, what a change. All glass on the other side. To the right were six white tiled showers. On the left an indoor heated swimming pool. Next a games room with two pool tables, one table tennis table and a stage in the corner with a microphone. The room would be used for socials. Beyond was the restaurant which would seat 50, and the counter where all sorts of sandwiches, burgers and drinks could be obtained. Also stocked were the usual small shop supplies.

This formed one side of a square. On the left were two volley ball courts surrounded by a 20' high wire fence. One of the courts also doubles as a basketball court.

In front of the main building was a patio and an Olympic-size blue tinted pool, flanked by a Twirl pool. Beyond was a lawn for sunbathing with many shade trees. This was probably the only green grass for miles around.

On the right hand side was a play area for the children with sand pit, swings, see-saw etc., and two hard tennis courts, all in excellent condition.

Further up the canyon was ample room for parking caravans, and a large screened off area for members with dogs.

There were about 100 members present, but this was only 11 o'clock on a Saturday morning. We were made very welcome with many enquiries on the nudists "down under".

Unfortunately we were always in a hurry. We were on our way to visit friends and were already late, so after half an hour we had to press on.

Our next visit was to Black Beach at La Jolla, which was supposed to have lost its Free Beach status. It's a beautiful beach about two miles long of clean golden sand. The beach is cleaned and graded each morning. It is about 100 yards wide at low tide, and 50 yards wide at high tide.

Located just outside of La Jolla, it is easy to get to with large parking areas for the Heliport, and the Hang Gliding station. The cliffs would be about 650' high, the nudists look like little ants far below, and there are two tracks down. One steep, which I went down and took 10 minutes with 15 minutes to come up again. The more popular track is half a mile further along and most of the nudists are found in this stretch of beach. This leaves about 1½ miles for those who "want to be alone". It was 11.30 am. on a Wednesday morning. The temperature at 80°F and the calm sea about 65°F. Too cold for me. There were about 200 men and 100 girls. There were two Life Guard stations and two trucks patrolling the beach. Two volley ball nets were set up and a notice board showed photos of various activities on the beach. I found the sand far too hot to walk on in bare feet, but then, I'm not tough, like most of the kids.

They told me that 2,500 is usual on a Sunday afternoon. Evidently beach inspectors come occasionally, just for appearance sake more than anything and then the life guards blow a warning on their whistles, and its fun to see 2,500 people all looking for a bikini or swim tops to slip on for a short time.

I paid a second visit on my way home on a Friday morning at 10.30 and with the temperature at still only 70°F there were over 200 already on the beach, with a steady stream on the way down. Coming back up the well worn footpath about six feet wide and almost at the car, a young fellow approaching said: "Hey, watch your feet" and pointed to the path in front of me. There, coiled up was a 20" rattlesnake. It was the same colour as the path and covered in dust. It's unusual for them to be out in the hot sun. I went to get my wife to have a look, and in the meantime it had crawled under a bench at the side of the path into the shade. I pointed it out to a fellow who had just arrived in his car, and he went to get something to remove the danger.

Next it was over to England where they were having the worst summer for many years.

The first visit was to the Nottingham Sun Club who have their grounds in the Newstead Abbey woods where John Byron the poet used to live.

My impression of English clubs was that they called their clubs Sun Clubs, Country Clubs or Health Clubs, anything but Nudist Club. That was a very secret society, and no one must know its whereabouts.

After careful instructions from the Abbey Gatekeeper, I still had quite a time finding a large green painted gate. That was all. Inside a large car park, club house, kitchen, showers, changing rooms, swimming pool, miniten, tennis, and badminton courts. The five acres were well wooded with silver birch and rhododendron bushes, and many cabins and caravans each in its own clearing. The cabins were all privately owned and the one I went into was new, with two bedrooms, bathroom and living room - kitchen. Drains, running water, and electricity.

Although it was a cool day, the trees and bushes made it an ideal suntrap and quite warm on the lawn. A busload had just arrived from Charnwood Acres Club, and a dozen people were busy in the kitchen preparing the meal. They said the club started in 1939 and is the oldest in the country.

The Isis Club outside Cardiff in Wales was next. Again, in spite of instructions in the International handbook it was only after many wrong turns I eventually came to a high green door blocking a small track through a wood. As the small wicket door was undone, I entered, to find a clearing well grassed the size of a football field, at one end a small club house, two caravans, and two nudists on lounge chairs enjoying a quick glimpse of the sun. They explained that as it was Saturday not many would come, but there would be more on the Sunday. Sunday it rained once again, so we pushed on to Bournemouth on the south coast of England.

Still very hard to find, the Bournemouth Outdoor Club was at last located, and then only because a notice on the high door said "Welcome Mr Sunshine". As this was more of a commercial holiday camp run privately by one man, I was surprised it was so hard to locate. However, the set up was first class. They had 33 cabins, and six more almost completed, in the seven acres of pines and rhododendron bushes on a sandy soil. Each cabin in its own clearing. A swimming pool 75' x 30', sauna with plunge pool, and sun lamps for cool days use. A large restaurant and hall complete with T.V., easy chairs and bookcases. The cabins were all designed to sleep four with bathroom and kitchen. The sauna was 12' x 8' with electrically heated blocks to make the steam, and a 12' x 8' cooling off room if you "chickened out" on the plunge pool.

An entertainment programmes was arranged for each week which included dances, barbecues, carnival dress social evenings etc., six miniten, one tennis and one badminton court were also available.

On the large lawn surrounding the pool the atmosphere was more restrained, with the separated small family groups. This no doubt was due to the fact that most of the people would be strangers until they had met at the beginning of the week. They could not put us up for the night, as they only took weekly bookings.

Charnwood Acres, I shall always remember. The Charnwood Forest at one time stretched over much of Leicestershire and was used for the hunting of deer and wild boar by the King and the nobility of the day. We now have left, many small woods and copse, ideal for a nudist camp, but heaven help you trying to find which one. It took me two hours and I had just given up when a young couple drove up and opened a gate into a field. "Did they know where Charnwood was?" "Sure, they were going there now" so after crossing two fields and over a bridge and through three gates we eventually arrived.

A young couple told me they had sold their house and everything to get this 17 acres of woodland and rhododendron bushes. To join, cost £4, and then £7 year membership. If you parked your caravan, it was £1 per week.

The club house was just being enlarged with showers, toilets and changing rooms added on. At present it was 60' x 20' with a nice kitchen and shop. Outside a small swimming pool surrounded by grass lawns, 1 miniten, and 2 badminton courts, and a grass volley ball court.

There were 12 caravans parked in the trees, and the kids had a tree house of their own. Water and electricity were laid on and a permanent bungalow was used by the owners. Eventually they hope to add many more units. One local by-law was that every tree cut down had to be approved by the Council and replaced by another one. They were busy removing one to make way for a new pool and the replacement tree was already growing nearby.

We just had time for one more quick visit to the Nottingham Sun Club and then aboard the 'big bird' for 'down under'.

We met a wonderful crowd, the best ever, and had a great time.

FREE BEACHES - by Emiel Roland

What a great rally we had at Christchurch! Great, not only for the sport and fun and renewal of friendships, but great for the discussion that took place about the future of the N.Z.N.F. and the Free Beach Group. I am quite convinced that some of the club committees are out of touch with the feelings of the majority of their club members with regards to the admission of the Free Beach Group, and are only voting according to their own feelings. Listening and weighing up of the ideas and convictions of others is an art that not many of us understand; but the greatest danger in our movement is that these clubs and persons who know all the rules of our constitution by heart conveniently forget Rule One. "The clubs and the N.Z.N.F. are in existence to promote nudism". Instead they try to protect their own little interests against imaginary threats from outside. These clubs that are protecting themselves behind their fences at the cost of our Rule No. 1, should seriously reconsider this attitude.

Do not misunderstand me. I am not advocating that anything that smells of nudism should be allowed in our midst. Far from it. We should uphold our standards and keep them high; but if there are difficulties in upholding the rules or standards, let us take a positive attitude. Not just say "against" but try and find a solution for a difficult situation.

Fortunately, our democratic system usually comes up with the right decision, and so it did this time. An overwhelming majority of the members present at our general meeting voted for a motion directing the N.Z.N.F. to give proportional voting rights to associated clubs such as the Free Beach Group.

The majority of our members feel quite rightly that genuine nudists (in this case 700 of them) should be welcome in the N.Z.N.F. with all the duties and rights connected with it.

The day after the official closing of the Rally, the Canterbury Club invited us to a Free Beach outing in one of the bays on the Banks Peninsula - And what a great bay it turned out to be, with a natural sculpture at the entrance and a unique shag colony. But what most of us remembered was many mussels and pauas that were eaten raw or barbecued.

It was a crowning end to a relaxed Rally.

KAMBAH POOL . . . The Free Beach in the
Australian Capital Territory

Just occasionally, a situation arises which is so ridiculous that I'm lost for words. That's how I feel about the news reports recently issued by the Department of the Capital Territory about the Kambah Free Beach.

Regular readers of the 'N.Z. Naturist' may recall the article in issue 85 advising that the beach area was being extended from the original (almost inaccessible) area almost to the car park. This followed representations by the A.C.T. Nudist Club, which gained approval by the elected Legislative Assembly, the Department, and the (then) Minister. All that remained was a survey of the area and formal gazettal. With full official blessing, nudists have been using the area since late 1977, without the least troubles or any complaints from other beach users.

During this time though, a new Minister for the A.C.T. was appointed by the Federal Government. Although we understand that the area is now surveyed and the extension could be formalised, recent newspaper reports advise that...

"The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Elicott, has rejected proposals to extend Canberra's nude bathing reserve ... over the past week Canberra police have been called in to patrol the area and have ordered the nude bathers back to their originally designated area..."

In reporting the situation, a Sydney paper noted that Mr Elicott is a Methodist lay preacher, and considerably more conservative than his predecessor. Unfortunately he has the full power of veto in the A.C.T.

Fortunately Canberra still has a Free Beach at Kambah pool, but it is now very reduced in size. The area is reached by 1000 metre walk downstream from the car park, including what even the papers describe as an arduous scramble over a section of boulders. It's worth it when you get there, but a bit much with small children, picnic gear and such, especially in hot weather.

With other beach users, the A.C.T. Nudist Club are now attempting to gain a reversal of the Minister's rather incredible decision. If anyone wishes to have more details about the lead up to this, please contact the Club. If anyone feels moved to write to the Minister suggesting he reconsider, his address is... The Minister for the Capital Territory, Parliament House, Canberra, A.C.T. 2600.

There is a clear message for other people chasing free beaches in this story. To borrow some of the words in issue 85... 'If the original proponents for a free beach in the A.C.T. had had a little more foresight and a better knowledge of what a free beach should be; if they had given more thought about to whom it should be accessible; if they had been less concerned about the need for isolation, peeping toms and hiding behind the "big tin fence" '... this ridiculous decision by the Minister would have been, if not impossible, at least nearly so.

LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

I am writing to let you and your staff know how much I appreciate the efforts that go into producing your fine magazine which I have been buying ever since I saw the September 1977 edition on sale. Having been sympathetic towards the idea of naturist clubs I have finally taken the plunge and have applied to join a local club in Sydney. The thing that did make me take the first step was the well publicised antics of Mary "Whitewash" and her crowd when she was in Sydney a short time ago. From what I have seen and heard of naturist clubs they appear to be extremely tolerant to other peoples' ideas and attitudes no matter how antagonistic and anti-naturist those ideas and attitudes may be. Again I extend my thanks to you and your staff for the fine magazine that you produce.

Yours Faithfully,
Grahame Doyle

Naturist Friends,

We would like to let you know that a special Naturist leisure centre is about to be created in New Caledonia, on 15 hectares of coral island covered in beautiful vegetation, situated half-way between Noumea and Tontouta International Airport.

Access to the island is by 2 boats, one 8.5 metres and the other 7.1 metres, which link the island to the mainland by a 15 minute sea trip.

Facilities at first will be fairly limited, but plans include - an access wharf; a large communal hut; camping ground for tents; sanitary arrangements; 50 acres are reserved for games: mini-tennis, volley-ball, table tennis etc., children's playground, swings, etc.

As well as the above, groups will be developed for - yoga; gymnastics; music; pottery, etc., naturalist education suited for children, on life and respect for native, study of flora and fauna of the island and surroundings.

Concerning sea sports, we have available - sailing, wind surf, water skiing, etc., undersea photography will be encouraged, while deep-sea fishing will be forbidden.

The business of organising this will be begun during the first term of 1979, and the centre hopes to be in action about July 1979, though this is the middle of the cool season.

We would very much like to create an exchange of information between our two countries - leading hopefully to growth in international "naturist tourism."

Please accept out warmest greetings.

Christian Plancard

The No. 89 centrefold is just beautiful - She's so lovely in every sense of the word - face, figure, expression. As a painter of portraits, landscapes and figure I rejoice in its honesty. As a christian I am able to openly appreciate and admire God's intricate handiwork, whereas, when the vulva is hidden beneath a dense cloud of hair, I can only appreciate what I know is there.

I am so glad this lady is not ashamed of her lovely female body.

Congratulations.

W.N.B.

Dear Sir,

I'm afraid I disagree with sexy centrefolds as they don't represent nudist life in public, but this magnificent photo (Issue 89) must surely be the most honest portrayal of social nudity; open acceptance of our ladies being clean and good from top to toe, that we could possibly imagine.

Please let us be tolerant of those who fight to "keep their hair on" - and rejoice in the fact that society happily tolerates their liking of nudity and gives them a freedom they themselves do not wish to share.

To those who "prefer to keep their hair on" I would ask they happily extend the same tolerance to nudists who prefer to "take their hair off" - even if it is a freedom they themselves do not wish to share.

W. Burgess

Dear Sir,

I watched with interest the interview on TV2 and applaud those who took part in the discussion, although such preparation as the interviewer may have made seemed woefully inadequate.

However, I do think that a great opportunity was lost in not only discussing the right to practise nudism in the open but also the enormous benefits that it brings to one's health and general well-being.

I am a widower of 63 and swim nude in the sea all the year round and residing in a rural part of the Auckland province I enjoy a large measure of privacy which enables me to garden and live freely.

I feel really sorry for people that scoff at nudists and class them as fanatics because they have obviously never experienced the exhilaration of living a good part of one's life in the nude. Gone are the days of head colds and influenza, in fact only when clothed does one ever feel the cold.

I regularly walk 3 to 4 miles in the nude in winter or summer, in rain, wind or un along deserted beaches and across lonely paddocks with only the cattle - also in the nude - for company. This exercise, no matter what the climatic conditions, is fantastically exhilarating and our scoffers and critics are all the poorer for their lack of the experience.

After many years of being almost continually covered, the skin, being the best thermostat of all, must be given a few months to thoroughly adapt to it's natural function. When this condition is reached the sun, the sea and the wind stimulate the natural warmth and exhilaration that a nudist always feels.

Seawater contains innumerable essential minerals and the iodine found in seaweed is most important for our bodies.

People must learn that open air nudity is not something that is rushed into on hot sunny days but a way of life that is both natural and satisfying. I think the N.Z. Naturist is doing a good job in promoting this but greater stress could be laid on the enormous benefits nudism can bring.

Being an individualist not wishing to become involved in "organised nudity" I will finish with just the nom-de-plume

Freedom.

Dear Friends,

Firstly our compliments on your charming December 1978 cover - it faithfully depicts the fresh, happy spirit that nudism entails. We write to support your cause and put forward a few points for your consideration.

There is something very wrong in a society where, were my wife and I to strip in our backyard, or at the beach, to catch a little sun, eyebrows would rise, neighbours stare and we would be (and are) held in general (old world) contempt. Yet, in the newsagents and bookshops (frequented by these same mentally manacled folk) it is quite par for the course to find row upon row of magazines displaying mistily clad school girls with vacant beckoning stares surrounded by Ken Russell props. All this right where the children can get a lunch hour education, too. This is apparently O.K. My wife and I (for that matter, anyone) in a private backyard would bring irate phone calls - should we be nude (as opposed to eight and a half inches of 'vital' material covering us). Don't get us wrong, it is not the magazines, as such, we are against - it's the inherent hypocrisy that is annoying.

We are encouraged by fashion and social morés to put more and more on in the winter (quite sensible too). So why not take more and more off in the summer? Which here averages 30° C per day. I wonder if it is fear of an ego crash?

On those delicious occasions when we can get to our beach, we are continually amazed at the number of people who have never seen - from what we assume from their stares - a whole human bod naked, in one place. Could someone please tell us what swimming costumes are good for outside the olympics? We would put forward that they are for a) shaky egos b) someone else's profit - and we'll bet the company directors bathe nude!

To us a body is its own adornment. From the Sanskrit poem by Kalidasa...

Beauty's own true form can always bring
ornament from anything.

Happy tanning. We will certainly bare with you

Dear Sir,

May I comment on 'Bill' of Australia's letter re the centrefold picture recently; famous or infamous, according to the imagination of the viewer. This talk of "Masturbate or fondling ones genitals excessively" makes me wonder at his fanciful imagery. But my mind boggles at his mentioning that do not copulate on the lawn', how did that creep in? Bill need not compare how understanding his fellow compatriots are, when ,he and his wife, along with others, wander away 'to the gentle ribbing' of their company, for the purposes of "natural sexuality between partners", how sweet! But having resided in Australia for a fair period of time I noticed a peculiar (to me) double-standard in regards to obscenity and sex in general, I had some innocuous English comic postcards confiscated by the customs there, when pornography was rife all over Australia.

Another Bill
W.S.C.

Dear Con,

I'm surprised that that early centrefold photograph is still drawing comment.

As an old campaigner - about 30 years since I first joined a Sun Club - after many years of sunbathing - and as a very early secretary and later a president of Wellington Sun Club and a present member of five sun Clubs, my comments may be of interest.

It is too easy to get unnecessarily up-tight about unimportant trivia.

"Bill" of Sydney has got his wires crossed when, in a letter on the subject of the centrefold photograph, he talks of other things including couples "copulating in the midst of the folk on the sun lawn" which I have never seen in a Sun Club and which has nothing whatsoever to do with the subject in question - a much maligned but undoubtedly attractive young lady reclining in the middle of an issue of your excellent magazine, and so far as I am concerned doing absolutely nothing other than just that. One can, of course, read into it just whatever one wishes - depending on the state of one's mind.

He would also be taking rather much on himself if he tried to define what he calls "normal behaviour" and that there are no "normal" people. We are all individuals. I feel that we should not try to force our ideas of normality onto others. Rather should we not try to tolerate and understand, as a true spirit of understanding and service to others is the true secret of happiness in life.

Whether or not the theme of the photograph is truly "Nudist", I fail to fully understand "Bill's" argument. After referring to masturbating and fondling of one's genitals in a nudist situation, he states that that seems to be the objection inherent in the photograph and that it is not the normal behaviour of nudists, but is the behaviour imagined of us by non-nudists. He later says that the only occasions the average person in the context of corporate nudity (Whew - Get that one?) "acts as the young lady is purported to be acting" is to brush away the flies - Then, quite illogically, he goes on to say that "It is this un-nudist element to which the club members objected". If in fact it was simply a matter of brushing away flies, then this is neither unnatural nor un-nudist. Really Bill - Such muddled thinking!!!

My comments on the photograph, for what they are worth:

(a) There is never anything indecent or unpleasant about nudity or sex per se. The original idea behind. nudism (or Naturism) was to get away from the oppressive taboos of the past and provide the opportunities to shed our clothes under favourable conditions and enjoy a more natural way of life. There seems little point after achieving so much to impose other unnecessary taboos and indulge in unnecessary and sometimes vague (as in this case) criticisms.

(b) There is absolutely nothing in the photograph to indicate that the young lady is in fact masturbating, or brushing away flies. It is merely a photograph of a young lady with a hand in proximity to the genitals. She is not necessarily "acting" in any way at all - That is all in the mind.

(c) I can find nothing whatsoever wrong with the photograph.

Dear Sir,

"Rally to the Convention!"

As a couple of that small band of Aussie nudists who were present to enjoy the N.Z.N.F. Rally at Pine- glades we must make this plea: "Think Trans-Tasman for a naturist holiday." By this we mean there should be many more ANF members at the N.Z.N.F. annual rally and delegation of Kiwis at Australia's similar (and sadly same time) convention. Nudist tourists will find that by visiting a few clubs and joining in the work and games of a Rally/Convention they will have a truly memorable and economical vacation.

Of course the intending inter-dominion skinny- tripper may also be able to arrange for car, caravan or camp gear exchanges through adverts in this magazine or inter-club correspondence.

Be assured that trans-Tasman visitors will not only gain friends on such a holiday but will at the same time learn how other groups run clubs and how NZers put on a "five star" rally.

Speaking more generally, I can understand new club members finding it difficult to get used to the freedoms of this wonderful way of life and to toss aside the prejudices and pruderies of an earlier outlook. It is not however so easy to understand those few people who, even after lengthy club membership, still find it difficult to discard the old ideas.

Congratulations on an excellent publication. I was afraid that, after the financial problems of a few years ago, we might experience a cut-back in quality, or that we might lose the magazine altogether - which would have been disastrous to the movement. As the mouthpiece of the combined clubs, and a most effective one at that, we can ill afford to lose it. It must be maintained at almost any cost.

Aubrey M. Fitton

I'm surprised as well that correspondence has gone on so long on this subject.

It appears to me that it has been fairly well explored seeing that the photo was published over a year ago. I suggest that the subject be dropped.

AUSTRALIAN RALLY REPORT
Three Bears Nudist Club

It is with great pleasure that I report to you on the events and resolutions which were passed at our 10th Annual Convention at the Three Bears Club Queensland.

The Rally was well attended by affiliated clubs and proved once again that nudist rally's really are the place to be on summer vacation.

All sporting events were heavily contested by most clubs with a new affiliate taking out the club of the year award. This year's club of the year, SQL, was only affiliated at the 9th Convention at Sunseekers, W.A., and have emerged as a real force to be reckoned with in the sporting arena. I am sure there are many clubs who are now endeavouring to put strong opposition up to them at the 11th convention.

Overall results of the "Club of the Year Award" was: -

1st SQL 31 pts   3rd Three Bears20 pts
2nd Helios 21 pts   4th Heritage 10 pts

The convention meeting itself resolved some very important and major changes in ANF policy and the future of the nudist movement in Australia.

A major breakthrough for the nudist movement was the adoption of "Associate Supporter" members to the ANF. This of course is in accordance with accepted procedure with our European counterparts and a measure by which the nudist movement can foster both publicly and financially. Basically, the principle involved both members of clubs and nudist persons who practice outside clubs to become member supporters of the ANF for a nominal, annual fee. This will allow non club members to visit clubs on invitation, attend swim and sauna nights, club socials and invitations to annual conventions and sports rallies. An important feature of the scheme is that clubs will still maintain total autonomy over their invitations.

Due to the enormity of the supporter scheme it will take the ANF executive some time to put the resolution into full operation. However, it is hoped the system will be in full operation by the end of the year.

So as to allow the Secretary and Asst Secretary sufficient time to get the supporter scheme "off the ground" a new position has been created on the executive for Treasurer.

This year the convention discussed the suggestion of life membership of the ANF to Sandy McDonald and Ted and Mary Weston, in appreciation of their dedicated years of service to the nudist movement in Australia. The final result of the discussion was to name the club of the year trophy the "Sandy McDonald Club of the Year Trophy" and the junior club of the year trophy the "Ted and Mary Weston Junior Club of the Year Trophy". It was felt that the naming of perpetual trophies would be more fitting to both parties rather than life membership as life membership expires on death but perpetual trophies are what they mean - perpetual, never ending.

Throughout the rally, the ANF received tremendous media support via TV, Radio and the daily papers. Overall we gained publicity in the Brisbane Courier Mail, Brisbane Telegraph, Gold Coast Bulletin, Channels 9, 7, 0 and 2 nationally. Radio interviews were carried out on 4lP, 4BK, 4BH, 4KQ and the Macquaries Broadcasting Service.

Much use was made of our (ANF) being in Queensland to visit as many clubs as possible and to document our visits on film for the ANF office.

It was unanimously agreed by all delegates that Bangalee Nudist Holiday Village would be a fitting venue for the 11th Convention and Sports Rally, so therefore, the 1979/80 Convention and Rally will be held at Tocumwal, NSW, from 30 December1979.

In closing I wish to extend our thanks to the proprietors of the Three Bears who did a great job with their members in getting the grounds ready and ensuring the convention went smoothly.

Yours in nudism.

Peter Rowsell - Secretary

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB INC.

The planting and beautifying of the grounds has proceeded well over the past quarter. Chain saws have been buzzing and the resultant firewood stacked behind the Club House for winter use. The never ending job of Lupin slashing and trimming on the centre ridge has gone well.

The new Super Deluxe Loo is nearing completion, lacking only power and hot water. The painting consultants had a field day with the outside colour of Priming Pink finally being changed to Stone colour.

Visitors have been many over the rally period with the immediate and past presidents of the Federation being especially welcome.

Although so far weather-wise it has been a Cool Yule, things hotted up in early January. It is believed that the exhausts from UFOS heading for the South Island caused the grass and rubbish fire. The Himatangi Fire Brigade was called and did a good job utilising the swimming pool water and later helped to diminish some of the amber liquid provided by a thoughtful member, before leaving with sirens sounding.

Another successful open day was held in November with the promise of more new members. The family lunch held the same weekend was well attended and a good 'Nosh' was had by all. New Year's Eve was celebrated in the Club House with Disco and Guitar type music, singing and revelling.

Sports activities over the festive season included Mini Golf, Miniten and Water Polo.

The Youth Group held a Banana Cake baking competition, the cakes were later raffled or auctioned, burnt offerings and all. A substantial sum of money being banked for Youth activities.

WAIRARAPA NUDIST CLUB INC.

We are a new club in Masterton with 17 units at present. Our application for Provisional Membership with the N.Z.N.F. was granted at Christchurch in December 1978. We were fortunate to find our grounds, without any problems, only weeks after our 1st meeting in May. They are lovely grounds with a river nearby, and plenty of level ground for sports, with trees which make a lovely natural surround of shaded areas when the sun beats down relentlessly, as it can in the Wairarapa. We are very lucky to have our grounds only six minutes away from the centre of Masterton.

During our short existence we have already built a Volleyball Court, a loo, sunk a well, levelled the track into the grounds and acquired a club house, which was given to us by a country school. The ex-girls loo building was duly stripped of inside fittings, and transported by lorry 15 miles to its new site It has now been erected five feet high overlooking our general playing area. Underneath the clubhouse is being used for storage of equipment.

With enthusiasm running very high four car loads of members attended P.N.S.C. for their opening day, and also W.S.C. for their children's Christmas party. W.S.C. have also paid us a visit which was enjoyed by all More recently was the 27th National Rally which happily three of our units attended. We entered several sports teams and at the final presentations managed a part win with Ladies doubles at Table Tennis.

With this, we send out a sincere welcome to all clubs and their members and we offer friendship as only our type of movement can.

Well summer is well under way and our hot tub is closed up until it gets a bit cooler.

On 11th and 12th October there was a Camp-in up at Ian and Jennifer's. This was to fell some trees and have a social get together.

On 25th and 26th November, several members went over to Ohope for the Free Beach weekend.

At the Family Fun Day held at the Gisborne Show- grounds on the 2nd December, we had a caravan, while members gave out information on the Club. Due to this, on the 3rd December, at our open day, had many enquiries and new members join up.

There was another Camp in at Tolaga Bay on 27th and 2th January, with a boat trip out to the Island off Cooks Cove.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

We hope the New Year is off to a good start for one and all. I don't think many could complain about the weather. Rotorua is a busy place at this time of the year and this has kept our members occupied one way or another.

A number of our keen types visited B.O.P. for their mini rally over the New Year and had a very enjoyable time there. We did not have anybody at the National Rally unfortunately, but hope to have a good team aT the next one. We had a very busy month in January with the Nambassa Festival at Waihi, the Waikato Pool opening and the Mahia Free Beach trip. Quite a few Rotorua people attended these weekends.

Our membership increase has been good this summer so far and two Open Days have been held. 'Bye for now from N.Z.'s "Hot Spot".

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

Well it's been a fabulous summer! The weather couldn't have been better for the B.O.P. Mini Rally. "A Lazy Family Camp-in" it certainly was

Thanks for the tremendous response from North Shore Club members as well as members from other clubs for making our rally such a success. Families from as far south as Dunedin joined in the fun, some even arriving around 3 o'clock in the morning, mainly because they got lost trying to find our club grounds.

Others had trouble finding their way back to the club grounds after paying a visit to the Horse Shoe Inn and some even had trouble returning to their caravans and tents after an enjoyable evening in the marquee hired for evening socials.

We officially opened our Hot Tub after a lot of trial and error and it was enjoyed by most of the campers, some till the early hours of the morning.

With approximately 120 campers plus day visitors facilities were quite adequate.

SOUTHERN SUN AND HEALTH CLUB INC.

An eventful year for the Club was rounded off by several family groups attending the 21st Annual rally at PineGlades. Although we did not win any trophies in the sports, it was good to see some of our members taking part after a long absence from the rally scene.

Speaking personally, I gained a better insight to the problems facing the N.Z.N.F. Executive in the time spent discussing, arguing, and compromising on the agenda put forward at the A.G.M. On behalf of the Southern Sun and Health Club I would like to express our grateful thanks to the whole of the Canterbury Club for giving us such an enjoyable time and being mad so welcome.

The purchase of our new grounds has sparked off a great deal of interest from other clubs and has led to a rush of enquiries of how to get there. A number of rough maps were run off in Christchurch and left in the PineGlades Rally H.Q. and they soon went. More will be printed shortly and sent for inclusion in amendments to N.Z. Club Directory.

Our club grounds were officially opened in December 1978 by a visit from South Island Vice President of the N.Z.N.F. Eddie Robertshaw, and the President, Secretary and members of the Orchard Club of Dunedin. As usual the Press were noted by their absence, as the opening of new grounds for nudists is no longer very newsworthy. A Barbecue was held later in the afternoon, and an evening social rounded off the day (which had stayed fine and sunny (thankfully)), which went off swingingly after the ladies had decorated the 'skhule' house for the occasion, and supplied plenty of goodies to eat!

We were also visited by the then National President, Ian Fairbrother and his wife Jennifer, Women's representative, during their tour of the South Island before going on to the Rally. At going to Press on this edition, we are expecting more visitors to our grounds from Northern club members.

A nice surprise awaited our return from the Rally. Our next door neighbour had been in with his big Massey Ferg. tractor hay cutter and had cut the grass in the accessible areas, relieving us of a heavy burden and a lot of worry in tidying the grounds for visitors. Which goes to prove that there is still some good neighbourly feeling here in the south. Our next big project is getting our water supply on a more fixed and leak proof basis. Finding where all the old pipes and joints are, proved a little of "hit and miss targets", as was finding a suitable gearing for our deep bore pump.

On behalf of all S.S.H.C. members, we wish everyone a very happy, sunny and successful New Year. And MANY THANKS once again to "PineGlades" members - you did a great job!

Our adults Christmas Party again took the form of a successful Dinner Party held in the Clubhouse. The evening continued into the small hours with a Disco The children's party, held the next day was enjoyed by them, despite the inclement weather. Other social events included a "Wine and Chicken" evening held at Dennis' house. There were so many people there that we renamed it a "Squash". Guy Fawkes Barbecue and evening also went off well with fine weather.

Our new camping area was in full use by the "Camp- In". The hard work of many of our members ensured the completion of the kitchen, the conversion of the storeroom into a Dining Room, and blocking off part of the passage to form a shop - all in the Clubhouse - in time for the "Camp In".

The National Rally at Christchurch was attended by six of our members The five days of the Rally were so hectic and the hospitality so good that we required a further ten days laying in the HOT Canterbury sun to recover.

The reprint of the New Zealand Nudist Clubs Camping Directory has sold as well as the first Print did.

An unusual event for a nudist club took place at our club just before Christmas when our acquired pet goat "Netta" gave birth to kid "Dennis".

Our next major development will be to seal the Miniten Court, then to get some sports practise in for the next Rally.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

Happy New Year to all readers from the Auckland Sun Club. Progress has been good at our club grounds. We held a very successful Open Day in December, apart from the weather, which was unmentionable, and we now have some very enthusiastic new members.

It has finally happened - the old clubhouse was ceremoniously bulldozed to the ground. It didn't give up easily though, but with the help of a friendly tractor and lots of manpower, it settled graciously into the dust.

The new clubhouse is progressing well, all the floor joists are in place, and if the weather and enthusiasm holds, we should be well advanced by the end of the summer.

The bulldozer has been working overtime and has cleared two miniten courts, and now we can't wait until they are finished.

Congratulations to Canterbury Sun Club for a fantastic rally, and top marks for organisation of the events and the weather. Ripper!!!

AUSTRALIAN

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB INC.

As this is written, our members are still returning from their wanderings during the holiday season. We have heard of good times at the major resorts at "River Valley" and "Bangalee"; an interesting Convention in Australia, with many friendships renewed; finally we understand that our contingent to New Zealand were given a royal welcome at the Rally and Clubs over there. Thanks Kiwis.

We are still trying for a lease for a club site in the Australian Capital Territory (all land here is leased from the Government). With luck, this will be the year we succeed!

The good news though, is that our membership is still increasing steadily, and our busy programme of activities for 1979 is now under way. Certainly with the warm (hot!) summer we're having, 1979 is away to a good start and looks as if it could be a "vintage" year. If you're passing through this way, get in touch with us at Box 242, Woden, and we'll do our best to make you welcome.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST HOLIDAY RANCH

Hi fellow skinny dippers,

Progress on our pool is going ahead at a steady pace and I still have every confidence that next summer will see us all splashing, swimming, and diving to our hearts content.

Xmas was very hectic here in the south Queensland area, with visitors from all over Australia coming to the Three Bears for the convention, and while here dropping in to see as many clubs as time allowed; we made many friends at the convention and we look forward to meeting them all at Bangalee for the next one, and the next, and the next, and to all you people who have never been to a convention, you've missed out in the past so don't miss out in the future.

When travelling through our way, give us a ring on 075 656602 and we'll put the billy on.
