Mrs GRUNDY WINS THE DAY - AT PRESENT

Do you ever feel sad and genuinely upset at the conventional attitude of so many people today who are simply horrified at the very thought of being seen naked, the possible majority of whom will be quite glad to see others that way. All sorts of arguments are put forward, for instance, that a woman's breasts should remain one of those hidden mysteries and as a result, many a man is lead to seek satisfaction by devious means.

Ask any publisher of salacious magazines or photographs, any proprietor of a night club or any of the people who are making a living by disclosing these "mysterious parts" how business is, and the answer will always be that they are thriving. Men particularly, including the "tired business man", are prepared to pay high prices to see girls show more of their bodies than is permitted in public; when it is considered, in the light of common sense, how utterly stupid is the whole thing.

A girl is quite within her legal right to stand perfectly still on the stage and display her breasts, yet if she does so elsewhere, it is regarded in quite a different light and she is sure to get into trouble.

There are many women who would like to see this outdated and old-fashioned prudery go, and of course, many join the ranks of the nudists in order to enjoy the freedom to which they feel they are entitled. But quite a number of others silently accept their fate and give in to the conventional thinking of the day.

It was my privilege recently to travel on a large P&O liner through the tropics and I visited the sun deck whenever it was possible. Bodies were strewn about the deck on towels and in chairs, soaking up the sun and enjoying every moment of it. Or were they? I was amused and felt sorry for many of the fair sex of whom, no matter how brief their costumes, were continuously fiddling with shoulder straps or pulling up shorts as high as they could get them, all obviously trying to avoid the white marks that brand the "textile" sunbather. And, no doubt, every beach and camping spot finds women doing the same sort of thing.

If we live long enough, we Britishers will one day enjoy the freedom of complete nudity on some of our beaches and other authorised places, as is the case in many parts of Europe today. They have proved over many years that behaviour does not deteriorate under these conditions, and it is further proved that ladies and gentlemen can remain that way in our clubs.

In fact, it is a fact, that you automatically develop a greater respect for others and consequently do all in your power to keep the moral standard high. If one small segment of the population can prove this to be true, what is holding back the rest?

Talking to Women

with Joan Treanor

IT has been brought to my notice that all we discuss on this page is the way in which so and so joined the movement and of her views before and after, plus ideas on what to do in the winter months, etc., and that we don't come up with any different views.

Well, reader, I am sorry about this but pleased to receive your criticism. But in actual fact, the idea of this page is to help the hesitant women and also try and keep the members interested, and what better way than by relating some person's actual findings. It's a pity that you couldn't have suggested some other ideas, but we shall have to try and brighten this page up then.

I must admit that although I enjoy writing of any sort, I do at times find it hard to write an article of this nature without it becoming too repetitious, and that is why I am again appealing to all women naturists to come up with some ideas or give me some suggestions to work on.

  HER "TALKING
  TO
  WOMEN"

Joan types her "Tlaking to Women"

My tanned body was the talk of the ward recently when in hospital. Firstly the doctor correctly guessed that I am rather fond (???) of sunbathing, and asked where I did it. The nurse present showed her disgust in the whole affair and couldn't get away quickly enough, and the sister mentioned that she didn't really approve either. However, the doctor and I had a good sensible conversation with regards naturism and I felt that it wouldn't be long before I would be able to interest him, too. The following day the sister approached me and informed me that she had decided that I wasn't such a horrible person after all. On enquiring about this overnight change, it appears that her flat mate wears the briefest of bikinis and the sister realized that I looked far better with a complete tan, whereas the white strips spoilt the other girl's figure. So there you are ladies, an entirely new approach for helping those reluctant nudists along.

I was talking recently with some new members and finding out their reactions about their joining and it was the usual story. "I wish I had joined sooner." But one couple was even more sorry, for they had let the years roll by and done nothing about contacting a club until now, and their daughters had quickly grown up during those years, and are in the youth age, and don't want to join.

And I know that those parents are going to have quite a tussle to get the girls in, although the boys took to the movement with no problems.

What a pity to let all those years go to waste, besides us losing those valuable would-be members. Intending members, please do make an effort and think not only of yourselves but of your children and their future and especially of the benefits, not only of the sunshine and fresh air, but of the sporting facilities available, plus meeting so many of their age group and forming friendships.

I know from my own experience that it is often more than a push required, but I do assure you that I have never heard anyone yet who has joined any club in NZ regret doing so. Come on now, no further hesitation, but get out that pen and paper and write to the nearest club secretary for getting particulars and join up now.

Please send all personal letters to Joan, c/- P.O. Box 6359, Wellington.

"THE SICK MIND"

SHOCK TREATMENT

Your article "The Sick Mind" appealed to me very much, and it has given me some ideas which I am working on. I have been trying to work up an article for some time, but couldn't get started. I like what you said, and I think you have given me the lead I have been waiting for.

Regarding your article. After noting the criticism from one of the local lasses, I read it again and still like the frank and definite way you have drawn the picture of The Sick Mind (issue 42). You leave us in no doubt as to what you are trying to tell us, and if the story shocks us, so much the better. Real naturists should be able to take it, as I imagine we have got to the stage when we prefer to see things (and people) as they really are.

- Rev. RAY FUSSELL, Napier

ORIGINALITY

Thank you for New Zealand Naturist. I always get a kick out of this particular magazine. It has something the others do not have: character and personality and a far better approach to the movement than anything I've seen.

- LC, London

OUR COVER PHOTO

I have just finished reading issue No. 41 New Zealand Naturist summer (December) issue. I return to the cover photo again and again, for what a splendid young person she is.

I think our young people exemplify all that many aspire to: good health and well-being and this young lady exudes sheer radiance. I know that in future issues of your fine magazine that you will not have room to run a series of photos of her. May I therefore request a chance to purchase a set of photos of her which have not been retouched?

- BR, Australia

(We regret that we are unable to sell photos of the subjects included in the magazine. It is just one of those things which are not done. Ed.)

AFTER 20 YEARS

In reply to your correspondence re renewing my subscription to your publication, I would like you to know that I shall be collecting it through the AOHC of which myself and family are now members.

The purpose of my subscription has now been achieved with my wife accepting social nakedness, (it took twenty years) so you will see that a sub. is not lost, but the movement has gained more recruits.

- BILL, Auckland

ABOVE THE CLOUDS

It was my good fortune recently to spend 14 days at an altitude of 8,400 feet where the ultra-violet rays are very powerful, and for the first week

I was able to sunbathe every day for as long as I wished. On several occasions I was able to look down on heavy cloud covering the lowlands. Knowing

that people down below were sheltering from the rain made my sunbathing real bliss. Six nude swims later in lakes and the sea all helped to make a first class holiday.

- KWG, Petone

A COMPLAINT

I have a complaint about your magazine. It is too small; it's not published often enough; the subs are too low and the quality too high. Apart from that, it's quite good.

- GM, Auckland

THE NAKED CAPTAIN

I would like to say how much I enjoy your fine magazine, which in my humble opinion, is a finer one than some that cater for naturism in some countries that I have lived in.

I used to contribute the odd item to an American magazine when I was on board a vessel running between the West Indies and the USA, the captain of which used to carry out his many duties wearing his cap, carpet slippers and a cigar.

WHEN we finally arrived home, I asked My Lady if she could please take me down to the river again some day, and she had said, "We'll see." At home Mum and Dad both remarked how much better I seemed to be, then, when My Lady said she wished to talk to my parents, I took myself off to bed and left them talking. I was never told the outcome of those meetings, but as things turned out later, it must have been about my general health and getting the sun on all of my body as much as possible.

MY LIFE

Part 2

by TOM

Here is how I deduced it. Came the summer holidays of six weeks; one Sunday the family went to a place called "The Burn", so named because a narrow tidal burn ran between high sand dunes to the sea; being shallow at low tides, it was an ideal place for youngsters who could not swim.

Well, this picnic day was a beauty, and when we all arrived and got well settled in our spot on the grass, Mum turned to me and suggested I go into the water. "I have no swim suit, Mum," I said. "You don't need one," she answered, "Go in in the buff, like you did that day at the river." Needless to say, I off with my clobber, rolled down the sand dune and splashed into the water. A really grand time was had by ME. Probably Mum thought that I, and I alone, needed the 'treatment' as my brothers and sisters were not given the same advice. Of course I was the youngest, and maybe it was OK for me to be naked but not the older ones.

However, I do not intend to dwell on the events of that picnic day, and will move on to other days and events which, in the main, were to change my outlook on life in later years. When about eight years old, I ganged up with three pals about my own age, and during the school holidays we four would leave home around 7 am, take some lunch and make our way to the burn, where off would come our clothes and we would dash into the water and have a good splash around. None of us could swim, but who cared? Then we would roam around the sand dunes just as we were and have really good fun all day long.

At that time, owing to drinking water being scarce, this place was not greatly used as a picnic ground, and there were never very many picnickers around. One high dune that was called Strawberry Hill, owing to the fact that wild strawberries grew there, was a favourite place of ours and we spent our time either there or in the water.

When the time came again to resume school, we were as brown as the proverbial berries all over, as healthy and full of beans, and, I'm sorry to say, full of skite as to what we'd done and how we had done it. When I think back over those school and nude days, I sometimes get nostalgic, climbing trees after birds' nests, (like Tarzan), playing Cowboys and Indians in our one-button suits, riding bare-backed imaginary horses over the sands, etc.

In the next installment, I shall tell you of the time I left England and came to New Zealand and a little of what happened then.

•  AN OLD CUTTING THAT SHOWS
MRS GRUNDY IS STILL WITH US

NUDITY

NOT A DANGER TO YOUTH

EVEN in this enlightened age, certain moralists are always with us who, because of their own unhealthy attitudes, imagine that the sight of a naked body is a source of danger to children and juveniles. Paradoxically enough, they rarely seem to have anything against the piquant frills and semi-nakedness of cabarets and films, and although we normally condemn all forms of racial discrimination, here, these apostles of righteousness quite incomprehensibly confine their messianic zeal to the white race. It is noteworthy that objections are rarely heard about pictorial representation of naked negroes and negresses in films, magazines and newspapers, which are easily available to youthful readers.

Recently the courts were engaged on yet another case concerning nudity in the naturist sense. My report comes from the leading Swiss daily "Der Bund" published at Berne. The following headline appears in its issue No. 419, dated 2nd October, 1960: "Breath-Bereaving Beauty. A photographer recently appeared before the second Magistrates' court in Berne to answer charges of having put up for sale in his shop an album of pictures entitled "Breath-Bereaving Beauty" ('Schonheit dies begeistert') and a multi-coloured pamphlet of similar content without having a concealing jacket over the cover illustrations. The person who brought the charge maintained that these publications were a danger to youth and the fact that there was a school, in the immediate proximity made prosecution a necessity.

The accused handed the court a carefully prepared collection of documents showing that representations of the nude body were widely exhibited quite openly in public places at Berne and many other Swiss towns. His defending counsel added that psychology and practical experience would prove that nudity in itself had neither a coarsening or other untoward effect on juveniles, providing neither the method of expression nor the use adopted were suggestive. The presiding judge refused to see moral danger to youth in the pictures produced and the case was dismissed with costs."

Exercise, sunshine, freedom = health

TO BE MENTALLY FREE AND UNINHIBITED IS SOMETHING ONLY NUDISTS
CAN FULLY APPRECIATE

Other dailies printed reports of the case, a very comprehensive account appearing in the "Bieler Tagblatt" dated 10th October under the heading "Nudity Before the Court". The prosecution was brought under Article 212 of Swiss Criminal Law and this is the second acquittal in that particular section. The exhibits produced by the defence included the naturist magazine "Die neue Zeit" No. 117 which contained some basic considerations and arguments by Prof. Dr H. C. Werner Zimmermann on "Nude Photos - a Danger to Youth."

OBITUARY

The movement has lost one of its keenest and earliest members, namely W. D. (Doug.) Cook of Eastwoodhill, Gisborne, who died recently, aged 82. Doug, a lover of trees, spent most of his life transforming Eastwoodhill from barren hillsides to an arboretum, containing perhaps the most comprehensive NZ collection of trees and shrubs. He inspired the development of the Pukeiti Trust with a gift of 153 acres on the lower slopes of Mt Egmont and he received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society some years ago. He owned possibly the best library on horticulture in New Zealand.

Doug. hoped his grounds near Gisborne would be used as a nudist centre, but one visit by the local members proved this to be impossible. His one regret was that despite being a lifetime nudist and not caring who knew it, he had never had an opportunity of visiting a sun club. Those of us who had visited Eastwoodhill retain happy memories of one of NZ's most beautiful parks.

Another long-time nudist who was not afraid to declare his interest and who appeared to always be in bounding good health has left this world. Most of us remember Leo Maingot and his somewhat booming voice at earlier National Rallies and his ever-willingness to help in one capacity or the other. We met him a couple of weeks before he was due to sail for England on a trip and he then informed us how fit and well he felt. However, it appears that he died on arrival in England and it leaves us all amazed and sad at his passing. Leo was 65.

Eric of Kaurimu reports: "We have to record the death of one of our oldest members, Emile E. He was well known to those in the movement and was, in his own way, a staunch supporter of naturism. Of latter years he was an onlooker, but never failed to make 'Kaurivale' a 'home away from home'. He is missed here by some of us who knew him best and that is the real testimony to a man's worth."

Prevention better than cure

by F.H., Auckland

Every year millions of pounds are spent by the government on the construction of new hospitals, additions to existing ones, together with the equipment and staffing of them. In addition during the past few years, millions have been spent on so called "free medicine" and a large proportion of this money is known to go down the drain, so to speak.

It is suggested from the point of view of improving the national health in a more direct and practical way that an enlightened future Minister of Finance - and he could nowadays be a member of a sun club without embarrassment to himself or friends - consider putting before his cabinet a case for subsidizing $1 for $1, the construction of open air swimming pools and indoor recreation facilities for the winter months, of approved sun clubs throughout the country and thus give whole families the maximum benefit of sunshine and fresh air and water, which are at present limited by the wearing of dirty trunks and costumes and the resulting pollution of school swimming pools.

It is suggested that not millions but a few thousands could be diverted, say from the funds received by the government on the sale of lottery tickets. By this means a large percentage of the population would thus help itself and at the same time the whole nation to better physical and mental health and also help to reduce the present overflowing hospitals and prisons.

THE SAUNA

by a Devotee

ADVERTISEMENTS have appeared in various publications in recent years on how to achieve health and real cleanliness by the use of the home sauna. Similarly, there have appeared in our cities, sauna baths, where the public may go along and enjoy this new idea. But is it a new idea? It may be for us, but sauna baths have been in existence since the beginning of time.

While used extensively by the American Indians before the white man arrived, it was known in other parts of the world many years ago. But the record seems to indicate that the real home of the sauna is Finland, where it has attained social significance as well as being recognized for its health benefits.

And what is a sauna? There are numerous ways of preparing a suitable bathhouse, from the primitive sod cave to the luxury establishments known today. However, in the main, excessive sweating that thoroughly cleans the pores of the skin is produced by heating stones to around 200 degrees and then pouring water over them; the steam does the rest.

After a very profuse sweating, the Scandinavians run outside and either roll in the snow or dive into a lake. This is repeated, the whole process becoming something of a ritual, during which the whole family takes part. Nowadays, a cold needle shower suffices and sauna advocates go along regularly for this treatment, usually claiming they feel healthier and better for it, and we will concede they would certainly be very much cleaner.

There is no doubt the sauna is here to stay, despite the fact that at first sight the treatment sounds very drastic. Anyone with a weak heart might do well to think twice about it, but its popularity is steadily growing.

Naturally one has to be nude to partake of this pleasure, though in our present "enlightened" society, special hours are arranged for the ladies, separate from those for the men. Other luxuries now include massage and ultra-violet ray treatment, a gymnasium, and some members claim they are able to not only keep fit, but maintain a healthy tan all the year round. •

Peggy

In previous articles we have learned how Peggy's boyfriend, Dennis, and his family, became nudists, finally introducing it to Peggy and her family. Her father now goes on to relate the happenings on their first camping holiday.

Peggy

SCATTERED all over New Zealand are ideal camping spots where those seeking escape and change may revel in the beauties and seclusion they have to offer. It was in such a place, many miles from the nearest sign of habitation, that the scene for this story is laid. We sure needed a rest and as we had now become nudists, we were more than keen to get away and try this relaxation and sun treatment for ourselves.

We had heard of the rugged grandeur of the district from an old pig hunter who had waxed eloquent about the beauty of the area and some of his earlier adventures there. It sounded pretty good, especially his glowing tales about the Roaring Mag, a rock-strewn series of waterfalls, canyons and ferns if you can ever get there. Peggy's appetite for adventure was whetted and after studying maps of the area, nothing anyone said or did would make her change her mind. She was sorry Dennis couldn't come with us, but luck was against him and he just found he couldn't make it.

Another awkward thing we hadn't counted on was Haggity, next door. We got on well with all the family, but they were going on a trip round the Islands and had asked if we could look after their dog for them. Both Peggy and Yvonne loved her, and I think she spent as much time with us as in her own home. He - or perhaps I should say she - was a lovable little devil, more foxy than anything else, but if there was any mischief to get into, you could bet Patch would be in the middle of it. Mum and I were not too keen but Yvonne's pleas eventually won us over and Patch came with us.

And so the great day arrived, and Patch sure knew something was doing, for she got in between everybody's legs as we were packing up, continually

hopping in and out of the car. Eventually we were loaded up, with the gas turned off, all the blinds pulled down and the electricity switched off and we were away, Patch charging over bodies and gear until she was eventually tied down in one place.

We had to make for a coastal road, but owing to the holiday traffic, it was quite a while before we got there. We found the road was pretty bumpy, and roughly metalled and I had to slow the old Chev. down to about 15 mph. We were warned about a fairly sudden drop into a gully and I was glad we had good brakes. Once we got right down to the beach, we just followed the tracks ahead, possibly made by the odd farmer or hunter. We were told to look out for a huge rock sticking out to sea from an otherwise smooth, but stony beach and then make our own way up the riverbed, which was quite 100 yards wide and dry as a bone.

By tracking about all over the riverbed and moving the odd stone now and then, we were able to get about 2 miles up, where it converged into two narrow streams, the water obviously flowing underground to the sea. We had to stop and so had a look around. The place was certainly wild enough and looked as if it would live up to the pig hunter's fruity description of it. We soon cleared and levelled a spot under a shady tree and backed the car into it and Yvonne was the first to yell out excitedly, that she had found an ideal site for the camp.

One lady who knows what complete freedom means

ONE LADY WHO KNOWS WHAT COMPLETE FREEDOM MEANS

We all approved, for it was perfect. Almost flat, with trees all round, a grassy patch big enough for the tents and nicely sheltered from the elements. A creek just a few yards away was all we wanted and it didn't take long to get organized. Yvonne built a fireplace and soon had the inevitable cuppa on the way, while Peggy and I erected the tents and unpacked the bedding and the rest of the gear. What pleased us all was the seclusion, for there appeared to be only one way into it and that was up the riverbed and the possibility of being suddenly discovered was remote. Anyway, Patch was as good as a dozen people, for her quick ears picked up every unusual sound.

Even Mum seemed quite jubilant at the prospect and it was the most natural thing in the world to peel off all our clothes and enjoy our first cup of tea in the raw and then lie on our backs gazing at the sky with not a care in the world. Telephones, diesel fumes, hustle and bustle were far away and it looked as if we were going to have the time of our lives. Even Patch was now glad to lie panting under a shady tree, for she had used up all her energy getting here.

While dinner was being prepared, I knocked up some cupboards with boxes we had brought and fixed up a table with logs for chairs and it began to look cosy. Yvonne had found a pool downstream and claimed we could make a swimming pool if we got busy on the stones in and around it. But that was a job for another day and when we decided to turn in, we had the hoot of a couple of love-sick morepork owls to help. And sleep we did, although our beds were strange.

The next day was a real scorcher and we found enlarging Yvonne's pool was an ideal occupation. We must have shifted about a ton of stones and it was nearly 2ft deep iii the middle and about 1 2ft across. As I remarked to Yvonne. it was plenty big enough to drown the dog, but her reply to that was very much to the point and more or less unprintable. Anyway, it certainly provided us with a built-in bathroom. And then there was firewood to gather and a swing to make, not to mention a rough kennel for Patch. The weather stayed fine and we were becoming niggers, especially Peggy, who had a good start on us anyway.

The district where we found ourselves was typical of this far-flung Dominion, consisting of gullies and hills, with grazing land on the ridges and bush growing thickly in and around the watercourses. Like much of this country, beautiful native forest had covered the land right down to the beaches, but as man had advanced further from the settlements which sprang up, the axe and fire had relentlessly destroyed much of the natural beauty. As a result, sheep and cattle contentedly graze on the open ridges and flattish portions, leaving the gullies and cliffs still clothed in virgin bush. All the watercourses flowing down to the sea were thus clothed, providing beautiful, and in many cases, difficult country to traverse. Of these, the Roaring Mag stands out in the minds of all who have ventured into it, as the most dangerous and cussedest of them all.

I may say, we had gone down and around the beach with the idea of attempting to climb up from the bottom, but we had soon given it up for huge conglomerate boulders, as big as houses had made the going too tough and we had been forced to turn back.

And so it was, after breakfast one morning, Peggy lay on the grass, staring up at the hills around her, the wiggling of one big toe indicating that matters of great import were being turned over in her mind. Her imagination had been fired by the travellers' stories and the description of the scenery above those big boulders and her interest had grown to intrigue, and in a woman, that means she'll get her own way sooner or later - or else. Yvonne, who had been watching her, was all for bringing these cogitations to an abrupt end with a billy of water, but Mum intercepted that young hopeful's foul intentions. Instead, she made a low salaam and enquired, "Oh, Queen Peggy, what affairs of state are weighing so heavily on thy fevered brow?"

Peggy, shaken from her reverie, was about to speak, when she suddenly saw her young sister, water in hand, and an expression that suggested mischief. She promptly jumped up and chased her, whereupon a scrap ensued and finished up with Peggy getting most of the water down her body, while Yvonne collected a generous smear of black from the billy. With no clothes to wash and iron, all was soon well again and Peggy assumed her thoughtful expression. "I'm still thinking about the Roaring Mag," she explained. "Oh, bless her," chided her mother, "let her roar. I'd leave her alone if I were you."

"You can have her, she's too rough for me," sang Yvonne, and then brightly added, "Sorry I didn't bring our helicopter, for that's the only way you can ever get into that place," and with her renowned lack of logic, she added, "Come to think of it, a helicopter wouldn't be much good either."

"No, seriously though," went on Peggy, "I've been thinking." And ignoring Yvonne's "What with?" she continued, "No, seriously, I know it's too rough to tackle from the beach, but what's wrong with getting into it half way up?"

A NATURAL BUSH STREAM IS IDEAL FOR A SWIM

As the rest of us made suitable rejoinders, she pointed to a low saddle above us connecting the ridge at the top of the gully with the Roaring Mag. "Why not follow that spur across the saddle and drop down into it from there? It doesn't look such a terrific climb and it would certainly make it possible to have a look into it, anyway." She was a sensible kid and I could trust her not to do anything rash. Mum wasn't so keen, but Peggy pointed out the spot where the waterfall was supposed to be and reckoned that if she could get into the place from the side instead of the bottom, she should make it without too much trouble. None of us was very enthusiastic about it; anyway I wanted to bring up some more supplies from the car, Yvonne had set her mind on enlarging her pool and Mum was quite content to enjoy the sunshine the easy way. But Peggy was too keen on the idea of exploring those upper reaches to be deterred and her enthusiasm grew, despite the apathy of the rest of us.

"All right," she eventually exclaimed, "I'll go on my own and if I'm not back by next Wednesday, you will know the Roaring Maglets have got me. I'll take a speck of lunch, a book and let's see ... oh, yes, a towel and a cap. How about it, Patch? Are you coming?" and if the rapid tail wagging wasn't enough to indicate canine willingness, her excited capering about was. As Peggy cut her lunch, Patch ducked and dived between her legs in great glee, for she loved the out-of-doors as much as any of us and knew something was brewing that she was going to enjoy.

Talking about Books

THE LAST WARRIOR

by Mary Patchett

"His dark eyes rested on the iron-grey surface of the pool and in it he saw the white reflection of the girl who was two years older than he was himself.

First she kicked off her scuffed shoes then she stretched her arms upwards and her arms went over her shoulders as her fingers fumbled with the back fastening of her limp, grubby dress.

She dropped her only garment and her white body was plump with puppy-fat and dusted with the pale gold of a precocious puberty. Boy (an aboriginal) saw the eyes that memory told him were china-blue, the golden hair and the miracle of the all-white body before the dark water closed over it; to him it was as if he had seen a sacred vision. It would be as impossible for him to discuss what he had seen as to speak of the secrets of his tribal dreamtime.

Boy watched her with an enthralling sense of guilt, though he could not have said why he felt guilty, nor did he even recognize what that guilt might be. He did not, as a more sophisticated white child might have done, have any feeling of prurience or even curiosity about her naked body, only an overwhelming need to satisfy himself as to its colour. He had been born into a world of nakedness, clothes could still be strange and frustrating to him.

As though a vision of such glory could not be endured a second time, he turned silently away, making no more sound than a wild thing and returned the way he had come. That day by the lagoon he was just eight years old."

HUMAN HEREDITY

by Ashley Montagu, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology, Rutgers University

"The Bomb, Radiation and Heredity

In 1957 the Swedish workers, Ehrenberg, von Ehrenstein and Hedgram reported the result of an investigation on the scrotal temperature of nude and clothed men. They found the scrotal temperature to be higher by 3.3 deg.C on the average, in the clothed as compared with the nude. They calculate that such an increase in scrotal temperature would increase the mutation rate by 85%.

They write: "The fact that our modes of dress have been predominant for several centuries might explain half the present load of spontaneous mutations. We thus see how modes of dress based chiefly on sexual taboos might imply genetical hazards 100 to 1,000 times greater than those estimated from different sources of radiation. If the eugenists regard this increase as dangerous, the design of male clothing will have to be reformed for example, in the direction of the Scottish kilt or of trousers fitted with a codpiece as used in medieval Europe. Garments that tend to press the scrotum against the abdominal skin will be especi4lly hazardous. Further consideration will have to be given to such factors as central-heated rooms and frequent hot baths.

In short, the wearing of trousers ... is probably more dangerous to future generations than the fallout from atomic bombs ... 3.3 deg.C temperature increase would he equivalent to a radiation dose of 40 roentgens. It would take 250,000 14" x 17" X-rays and 300,000 head or skull X-rays to equal a radiation dose equivalent to the wearing of trousers."

YOU CAN'T WIN

•   TRUE EXPERIENCE

as reported by Les Guyton

"Open this door you young limb, or you will be sorry when I get out of here." This is an edited version of some fairly pungent remarks made by Roy of Canterbury Sun and Health Club to a young admirer who had locked him in his own boiler room.

Roy was one of the organizers of one of our annual Rallies and was busy supplying the hot water for showers and washing that all of us were so grateful for during our stay at Pineglades, when a little boy kept banging on the wall with a hammer. Roy stopped work and took the hammer from the boy and told him to go away. This was done; but he had no sooner started again when more banging started. Out goes Roy again and took a piece of wood from the little lad; once more back into the room for work and what happens? Yes, the banging once more, but this time, when Roy was really mad, when he tried to open the door, it was firmly locked on the outside, leaving poor Roy to rant and rave on the inside. Boys will be boys. •

PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE NATURIST

No.2

by PROFESSIONAL

THE FIRST NUDE POSE

THE best pose for beginners in nude photography to try first is the one in which the model lies on her stomach. By beginners we mean both models and photographers, for this article, like its predecessor, is intended to help naturists make better photographs.

This pose is recommended because the girl merely assumes the position she would naturally take to ensure a good sun tan on her back. She simply lies front down on the lawn, beach or a rug. Of course, this pose has infinite variations. For a start, have the lass rest her face between her hands while propped up on her elbows. This is a common pose made familiar by film starlets in low cut costumes. Despite the starlets, the pose is always attractive.

Photograph your model that way, then have her rest both arms on the ground across her, one in front of the other. After that she might tuck her hands under her chest and so on. Merely crossing her legs at the ankle and bending them backwards, the model can change the whole composition of this pose. It is always a good idea to ask her to put her shoes on for this shot as the soles of her bare feet may appear to be dirty in your photograph and this always looks bad.

Be careful also of the model's hands, especially when you are taking your exposure directly facing her. The hands are the most important, but awkward part of the body to photograph. The closer they are to the camera lens, the bigger they will appear to be. Try not to let them get closer than her face and keep them hidden or closed as much as possible. Artistically, the results will be much better and besides, no woman wants big hands. Not even in a photograph.

A variation on the "first nude pose"

A VARIATION OF THE "FIRST NUDE POSE"

One way she can hide her hands is for her to trail both arms along her sides and with her cheek against the ground dozing or at least pretending to. Never hesitate to expose a shot because your model's eyes are closed. Such a picture may be delightfully different because the model is obviously enjoying that totally restful feeling only a naturist can experience.

Don't think you must take all your shots from one position; a different pose for each exposure. Professional photographers invariably make many exposures of each pose. Only when they have completely exhausted the position or the model, do they try another pose.

It is also a good idea not to show the model's face in a few of your photographs. By concentrating on her form instead of her face, you could produce results which are both interesting and unusual.

So far, we have assumed the model is young with an attractive figure. Now let us look at the slightly older woman. Don't look with affectionate eyes that mask her physical faults. Look as would the harshly revealing lens of your camera. If she is your wife, is she really the girl you married, firm of breast and flat of stomach? Or perhaps she no longer has quite the figure she had after several years of married life and children.

A young girl will lose nothing by this pose for an attractive figure is always attractive. For the mature woman, this pose is a blessing. By lying on her stomach, she can successfully hide her plump waistline; her breasts move away from her chest and assume their old firm shape. This effect is especially noticeable when the photographs are taken from the front.

When the model raises her head, her neck is stretched so that the little circular lines around it do not show. Nor do any extra chins.

Now let us consider the male model, for the pose is equally good for men as for the opposite sex. Besides, the ladies like photographs of their menfolk as much as men like photographs of their ladies.

Of course, men do not lose their figures from child bearing, but a lot of us fall victim to that terrible complaint of the married men: sagging waist line. It might be a visible compliment to the wife's good cooking, but a paunch does not look flattering in a photograph. By lying face down and propping himself on his elbows, a man's waist line is not only hidden, but his shoulders are apparently broader, his chest fuller.

This pose is good for those who are camera shy. A girl may suddenly become very self-conscious when asked to pose even by a close friend while at the club. This is quite understandable. Who has not seen some of the grotesque shapes girls are asked to assume for the sake of "glamour" or "art"? But this pose can be far less revealing than many provocatively clothed pin-ups.

As for the law, in Anglo-Saxon countries, it states that photographs which show the model's pubic area are indecent. A person risks prosecution even by possessing such photographs. We will not argue with the law. Sufficient to say that in this pose, the law is completely satisfied.

So off you go! Have your model assume the first pose, aim that camera and many happy naturist photographs to you.

The Junior Section

with Joan Treanor

RECENTLY our family had different members from other clubs staying with us and I took the opportunity to show them the amenities for youth that we have, and also the various activities that are carried out, and it was pleasing to note that they were all interested and expressed their views that they would try and do something about it at their own clubs.

It is amazing how much can be done from practically nothing. Now this sounds silly, but surely on the club grounds there is some old timber or logs which could easily be made into a log cabin or a stockade, etc., and judging from the fun the youngsters have at our club, I think that the stockade is a wonderful idea.

There are rope ladders for the trees, plus swings made from old tyres and I am sure that quite a few of you youngsters must have other ideas that you could mention to your committee. A very good idea for the summer is to have a swimming chart. We have one here and it has proved very helpful. There is one for the learners and once they have carried out all the tests for which they receive a gold star, they then go on to the senior chart, which goes from plain swimming right up to resuscitation, and they then get a blue star, but as well, we have issued certificates for them, proving that they have qualified in the eyes of our instructors. This idea has met with approval both from the youngsters and the parents, and we certainly have seen a marked improvement in the swimming this past season.

A weekend away for the older youth is always a good idea, and there must be somewhere, not too far away, so that you don't involve too much expense, where you could stay, even if it is at another club, and there must be dozens of places for hiking, etc. Pen pals throughout the various clubs would again be another idea of getting to know other youth nudist members which, of course, could lead to invitations to their homes and clubs, and you then have the interest of the letters to receive and write.

Well, I think that I have given you a few ideas and all you have to do is to see that you can get some of them carried out. Don't sit down and let the other fellow do all the work, but start organizing a social evening or something now. I would still like to receive letters from you with ideas or queries, because remember, they might help someone else, too.

Please send all letters to Joan, c/- P.O. Box 6359, Wellington. •

SUN   CLUBS   IN   NEW   ZEALAND

 A  SERIES  OF  VITAL
INTEREST TO READERS

What to expect in a nudist club

NUMBER 7

PERC. W. COUSINS

THE person who has never been inside a nudist camp or has wondered whether it really is the hot-bed of sin that is popularly attached to it, must wonder what really goes on behind the fences and what it is like.

As stated clearly in earlier articles in this series, the members are made up of quite ordinary, law-abiding and respected citizens and none of them would stay in the club 5 minutes if there were any "goings-on". They go to the club grounds to get away from routine to meet other like minded people to relax in the sun or help build up the amenities for the comfort of the whole membership.

Property, clearing, building, pools, all cost money and as a result, there are always some members sufficiently dedicated to help provide these necessities. It stands to reason, the bigger the club and the longer it is established, the better the facilities will be. It is usually a struggle for a start, but as the membership grows, new skills and tools become available, more money pays the bills and so, in the course of the years, very lavish grounds, with amazing facilities arise.

After the purchase of a suitable tract of land, planning is first on the agenda, usually consisting of provision of adequate fencing, and screening, reasonable access and a building for tools and shelter in inclement weather. The new club will eventually boast a club house, which often includes an. open fireplace, a library, a kitchen and sometimes bunks for overnight accommodation. Play areas are important and volleyball, tennikoit, badminton, etc., each have their own courts and an area set aside for the kiddies is important, equipped with see-saws, swings, sand pit, paddling pool and all the things the young fry delight in.

This is Trevor at Pineglades, clearing scrub

THIS IS TREVOR AT PINEGLADES
CLEARING THE SCRUB IS ONE OF THE FIRST JOBS ON THE AGENDA

Temporary washing and toilet arrangements are provided, pending the day when a proper toilet block can be built with its own septic tank. Electricity makes cooking, etc., better, especially for those staying overnight.

If the grounds are fortunate to have a stream, it does not take long to make a pool deep enough to cool off in and this often has to suffice for several years. Of course, the ultimate aim of all the clubs is to have a swimming pool and even if the labour is provided by club members, it still requires a lot of know-how and money. All our major clubs have beautiful pools with filtration systems and the sparkling, clear water is a magnet to old and young during the summer and the empty pool in the winter time makes an excellent sun trap out of the wind.

Depending on the terrain of the particular club, various other amenities are added. Remembering that most members just want to lie and lap up the sun when it is hot, sun bathing areas are provided, often around the pool surrounds, but one club has made a long, grassy bank overlooking the games courts. Trees for shade, beauty and screening are planted and flower plots adorn some areas. Another club with the space, has a street of cabins, where members may enjoy privacy with all mod. cons., one even sporting a TV set.

Most clubs aspire to a hall for socials and where the distance from town is reasonable, that is an excellent idea. And cooking facilities and hot and cold showers are usually provided.

There is always something to do, whether you are flat out on your back frying in suntan oil or flat out with a shovel. Club grounds are designed for beauty, comfort and relaxation. They are away from the bustle of city life and once you are inside, you are within your legal rights to remove your clothes. It is a great thrill to feel you have been responsible for making some of the plans a reality and that you are a part owner of all that the club provides.

So ultimately, whether it be sport, swimming, lazing, working, planning, the club grounds will supply them all. It's a great life and worth an enquiry. You will never regret it. •

News from the Clubs

We were distressed to hear that the couple trying to organize a club in TARANAKI have suffered so many disappointments that they have given up their PO box and are not prepared to carry on. We are listing them, hoping that others will come along and give them the encouragement they need.

However, better news comes from other areas, and we are pleased to announce that the clubs in HAWKES BAY and WAIKATO have become incorporated. This is a sound step to take, especially when owning property.

You may have heard about the firewood at HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB. Members are helping themselves as fast as they can but there is so much it will rot away before it can be used. The latest idea is to chop it up and deliver it to pensioners in 3-bag lots. Some have been almost in tears in gratitude, although most don't know where it comes from.

The club in TAURANGA is holding regular meetings in members' homes and occasionally visit the hot pools in the district. Like several other budding clubs, they are searching for grounds and hope to have something ready for next season.

After a fairly successful season, the AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC. has since enjoyed an upsurge of interest and arising from this, a plan of work was presented to and accepted by the members at a general meeting. The go-ahead was given to get cracking on a survey of the boundaries, including some fencing, felling of pines and clearing of scrub ready for planting of trees and shrubs. This will have been done by the time this is in print. They are fortunate in having a surveyor member who is keen to help. They are proud of their family club, even if some members have left for another club. Their monthly swim evenings, started in January at a heated pool, are proving very popular, although a few of the less energetic ones would like it to be a little warmer than the normal 73-78 degrees. Finally, the club is arranging to have a suitably engraved mounted plaque made to display in the clubhouse, as a mark of appreciation to Norman, their patron, for his generosity in donating the property to the club. Truly they are fortunate and very appreciative.

Development work at the CANTERBURY SUN AND HEALTH CLUB's grounds has continued with regular use of the tractor to complete the clearing of the burnt-off area and the fire-breaks, while work is now under way making a new access road on their own property. Previously access has been by courtesy of members who own adjoining land.

The set of swings and slides purchased earlier in the season have been set up in a newly cleared play area which also boasts a stockaded "Fort Pineglades" and a miniature "Marshall's Office" complete with hitching posts, all of which are proving most attractive to the children.

Play-minded adults have not been forgotten either and work is well in hand to provide a second court for tennikoit or "bat-minton". The ground has been levelled and a foundation of coarse gravel laid and rolled in preparation for the laying of the court in a patent mixture. This is being used as an experiment since, if successful, the same material could later provide a second volleyball court at a greatly reduced cost.

It would not have been possible to provide the second tennikoit court out of current income, and they owe this new amenity to the initiative and drive of the sports committee who raised the required money by means of special donations and raffles.

The winter activities of the WELLINGTON SUN CLUB are centred around the construction of the rest of the amenities block, though no completion date has been set. Although the Education Board intends to take an acre of their land, it will not be for 7 or 8 years. Meantime, tentative plans have been drawn up to determine the new boundary so that tree planting may proceed. Regular monthly socials are being held, the first one being an international evening held in the president's home and the next a bring-and-buy, combined with an illustrated talk by Perc. on his cruise to Hong Kong and Japan, etc.

A new member was able to purchase 6 steel roof trusses for them and their architect member is now drawing up plans for a larger clubhouse. It is expected that a special meeting of members will discuss this project shortly.

The Rally committee has arrangements well in hand for the coming national event, including 3-phase power connections to be linked to strategic parts of the grounds and a new filter for the pool.

Further excellent publicity was gained when Perc. addressed a meeting of the Petone Lions Club and was so well received that a further invitation from the Wellington City Lions followed the next day. Free magazines were gladly accepted. Efforts are being made to book the local sauna baths for nude splash nights. George, the president, has left for the UK and hopes to let overseas clubs know something of our activities in NZ.

The KAURIMU SUN CLUB has a willing and energetic working manager and one or two others who make it a duty to come along and put in solid toil, improving the grounds and its facilities. The rest are conspicuous by their absence. It was ever thus. Their dome is again reconstructed and only needs minor additions to be in full use as a hot house during the cooler days. With paths constructed to the rear portion of the grounds (where they may be able to lay down a bowling rink); with the clearing of the undergrowth around the pool; the construction of a dam to regulate the flow of the stream, and sundry other tasks, they are in a fair way to open the coming season better than ever before. A major task now beginning is the building of a new clubhouse and the concrete foundations are all ready to pour.

New enquiries continue to be made and although, as usual, some do not pursue to the point of membership, they continue to keep ahead in membership without going in for advertisements to any extent. Indeed they continue to receive visits from old sympathisers who came out many years ago. Their requirements are very few and the coming season will see a more solid establishment than ever before.

During previous winters, the emphasis at AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB has been on major building projects including the clubhouse, swimming pool and recently, their toilet and shower block. This year they are taking a breather, but for those members who enjoy pottering about in the open air, an arbor day had been arranged in August to supplement the landscaping and gardening that has already been done. The splash nights which they arranged monthly at a heated city pool have proved tremendously successful and should become a regular feature of their winter programme. •

INTERNATIONAL NATURIST FEDERATION

IRELAND

The magazine "British Naturism" refers to an Irish Naturist Association that is attempting to encourage the formation of clubs and unite the movement in that country. Realizing the difficulties they are likely to meet, we wish them every success in their efforts.

ENGLAND

The major social function organized by the CCBN to mark the close of a successful season, was a dance held in London, where 400 members from mainly the Midlands and the south of England, had a wonderful time. Opportunity was taken to present Dorothy Thornton with a gold watch and a substantial cheque in recognition of her outstanding services to the movement, notably in helping the many supporters who for one reason or another, have been unable to join clubs. The CCBN reports that 80 clubs are now affiliated in Britain, 5 being quite recent applications. Some 4,000 persons have joined as Registered Subscribers, these being non-club members.

FRANCE

CENTRE GYMNIQUE et NAUTIQUE de MAUBUISSON These are new grounds called Nautena, and are about 30 miles from the huge French grounds of Montalivet. Naturists may either bathe in the Atlantic, about 1¼ miles away, or enjoy France's largest fresh water lake which has a sunbathing beach almost a mile long.

As the name implies, this is a nautical club and sailing, water skiing or canoe trips are practised on the lake. In addition to a sailing school for its members, tents, caravans and cabins are available and even full board can be arranged on its 8 acres. A restaurant, car park and numerous shops are available and fees are very low. For those naturists who like to combine sailing and water sports with their sunbathing, this is the club to join.

GERMANY

We read with interest that an invitation issued by a naturist sports organization to outside bodies to participate in a volleyball tournament in Berlin and Kassel and to be played on club grounds, was accepted by a team from the Belgium army and was played off in club grounds in Kassel.

CANADA

To help celebrate Canada's centennial year, the Toronto Gymnosophical Society has invited us to Glen Echo's Park in Toronto to join with them in their celebrations of this milestone in the country's history. We would love to go and also take in Expo '67, but unfortunately the invitation arrived 3 days before the fun began. Better luck with the 200th celebrations.

YUGOSLAVIA

A small island by the name of Koversada, in the Adriatic, is becoming increasingly popular for nudist holidays. Its amenities are few, for only a few toilets and showers are available, but a shop supplies most of the needs of the campers. A boat visits the island daily from a hotel on the mainland and, during the season, all facilities are taxed to the utmost. The coast is fairly rocky but fishing is good and undersea explorations are extremely popular and rewarding. Large trees and scrub abound, providing ideal camping sites and fuel for fires.

The island is becoming so popular that travel agencies and local authorities are planning opening up further areas along the Adriatic and entice the thousands of nudists anxious to spend their holidays under such idyllic conditions.

HONG KONG

One of our northern members, a retired minister of religion, writes that he was impressed by the set-up of the Hong Kong Nudist Assn on a recent visit to the colony. He said that they had a fair-sized membership and meetings are held weekly, at night. To practise outdoor nudism, members travel by motor sampan to their grounds on a large island where the feature is the delightful stream which cascades down a series of waterfalls to the beach.

Members come from many countries, including Hawaii, Portugal, China, Pakistan and British lands. Many of them can't even speak English. One member is married to a New Zealander. The minister said that during his visits, he found no shelter from the searing sun. Someone had burned off the sheltering flora beforehand.

(I am sorry that I did not have time to make contact with them when I was there at the beginning of the year. Ed.)

Despite the fact that Cary Grant has been the recipient of numerous awards for being one of the world's best-dressed men, The American Sunbather claims that he thinks men were better off before they began to wear clothes.

"When the first stone age man took an animal skin it was perhaps his first move toward civilization, and therefore the weakening of himself and his physical potency," he says.

He thinks the only way men's attire could be improved is to get rid of it completely. But he adds, "We'd probably have to grow hair on our bodies to keep warm."

NZ has WINTER SPLASH NIGHTS too

by JACK of AUCKLAND SUN CLUB Inc.

Nude swimming at the local baths? Yes, they have it in England, but who'd guess it could happen in New Zealand? Well, we of the Auckland Sun Club Inc. do this once a month.

We first contacted a local swimming club a few months ago and asked if we might hire their heated pool. "Yes, certainly," they said, "but you will have to wear togs." This put the damper on things, but we still hired the pool one cold evening and enjoyed ourselves. The evening was a success with a get-together after at one of the member's homes.

We decided to hold another swim evening preceded by a barbecue, and when making the hire arrangements asked again if it were permissible to swim nude, providing we supplied adequate screening. Imagine our pleasure when this was agreed upon. We scrambled around and managed to obtain lengths of brown paper and masking tape and went along, not without a feeling of apprehension. For a lot of us, this was our first experience of being nude in a virtually public place. However, once we had fulfilled our obligations in the way of screening, a feeling of relaxation prevailed and a very enjoyable swim was had by all.

This set the pattern for us to hire these pleasant surroundings again and again. We fully appreciate the faith that the management of the pool have in us as normal people who just don't like to dress for swimming. We in turn appreciate their understanding and maturity. Whilst we feel that we get good value for our money we also like to feel that we are helping the swimming club financially by our constant bookings. Why not try this in your local area if a suitable pool is available.

It is good to have outside activities which can help to promote better understanding of the nudist way of life and you will certainly derive much pleasure from it. •

Health in the sun

Three good reasons why everyone should smoke:

  1. If you smoke sufficiently, you will smell so strongly that dogs will never bite you.
  2. If you smoke consistently, you will activate your lungs so much that you are forced to cough. This usually happens when you are about to sleep, thereby discouraging potential thieves from stealing your belongings.
  3. If you chain smoke, you will die young; a good way of avoiding the infirmities of old age.

Please also remember, by early December

Some folk will have suffered a lot.

For burns of the eyes will cause no surprise

And we all get alarmed when children are harmed

From having the matches to strike.

It seems that small boys with fireworks for toys

Enjoy playing pranks on their foes.

And meddling with fire to their heart's desire

•  ONE DOSE, NOT FIVE

The plastic metric medicine spoon which has replaced the household teaspoon must be used properly. The amount it holds is 5 mils, and it is known as a 5 mil measure.

In one reported case a chemist marked the bottle, as instructed by the doctor, "One mil measure 6 hourly". The patient's mother read it carelessly. She gave her small child five measurefuls all at once.

"Fortunately," said the doctor, "The infant knew better and vomited most of it back." Remember: "5 mils" means one filling of the plastic spoon.

"BRITISH NATURISM"

The CCBN has given its magazine a 'new look' and it now boasts a coloured cover and 36 pages of news, articles and unretouched illustrations that make it a good buy at 25 cents. Because of the pictures, it is available only to members and approved supporters and we can recommend it to all who want to keep in touch with the English scene. Annual sub of 4 issues $1. This magazine will also feature an article on NZ every issue, written by our overseas correspondent.

PERC. COUSINS TRUST FUND

This fund is steadily creeping up, many subscribers and others sending us money, being happy to contribute the change to the fund. Our last balance was £279/15/5. Donations received since then are as follow: Club levies £4/15/6; Rev. R. Fussell £2/10/-; TMc, Auckland 9/6; smaller donations 10/-. Present balance converted to decimal currency $576.04.

APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP

While most clubs wish to offer every facility to intending members, they would appreciate a little more information about yourselves in that first letter of application. After all, a club has to exercise caution with many applications, so the more information you can give about yourselves, the easier it is for an interviewing committee to gain some idea of the desirability of the applicant as a member. State your age, whether married or no, and if so, does your spouse share your interest? Are you prepared to help with the work around the grounds? Any family, and have you your own transport? What experience have you had and what is your motive for joining, etc.? Remember, clubs want more genuine members, and it is a recognized rule, that all the information you care to give will be treated with the utmost confidence, if you want it that way. And finally, the courtesy of a stamped, addressed envelope is always appreciated.

SINGLE MEN

It is not every club that is willing to admit single men, so if you apply for admission to a nudist club, and have not received an immediate answer or notice of your approval, don't despair. Just be patient, for most clubs have to keep a reasonable balance of the sexes. Rather than feel bitter, try and encourage a lady to accompany you: maybe your sister, your aunt or lady friend. There are usually vacancies for the genuine nudist, but committees have to watch that balance. Perhaps you can help them and yourself at the same time.

CHARTER FLIGHT TO USA

We have received a couple of tentative enquiries about the proposed trip to the States to attend the next INF Congress. No decision has yet been made where it will be held, although we can be sure it will be some time in July or August next year. When we are sure of an adequate support to make up a party, we will commence working on fuller details. We need a minimum of nine, but more will secure greater concessions and we visualise a stay of about three weeks in the States. If you are certain you can be a starter, let us know at once.

HOTSPRINGS HANDBOOK

Members are advised that the second printing of this handy guide to the many hotsprings in NZ is now ready. It retails at 30 cents, all profits going to the Perc. Cousins Trust Fund.

MILFORD TRACK WALK

Doug, our national secretary, is endeavouring to make up a party of members of our clubs to undertake the Milford Track walk early next year. This idea could easily become an opportunity, not only for seeing this famed tourist attraction, but also for a new series of pictures for this magazine. All enquiries should be sent to this office. An invitation letter has been sent to all club secretaries. •

BEAUTY, NO BEAST

by PENWORTHY

Two animated girls splashed in the surf,

Two tanned, naked sylphs of innocence.

Gleeful cries, a plunge, riding the breaking crests,

Joy it was in those two hearts, intense.

This strand was theirs, theirs for a day;

Sun washed the spent, foaming tide.

They beckoned each other, dared to imitate,

While the liquid soothed their limbs, inside.

Harmoniously, the frolickers ran from sea to shore,

Imprinted youth in arenaceous prints.

Nature it breathed, that scene it breathed

Virginal beauty in dull shapes and tints.

Creator, this is a glorious message, succour

For human souls, an antidote to Hell.

What grace and love, what sweet balm aurates

To flood this Eden, evil to dispel.

Journey home, extinguished energy,

Curled in a corner, languid, quiescent.

The day's dichotomy becomes so clear;

Two slumbering shapes, askew, not evident.
