president's
report

The Annual General Meeting of the Executive of the NZSA is the Forum at which member Clubs are able to bring forward their ideas as to what the Movement should be doing, and at which the Executive Officers account to the Clubs for their actions during the year. This year has been one of progress in some directions, but in others we have not advanced as fast as we would have hoped.

The Executive Meeting was held in conjunction with the 22nd National Rally at Fiveacres, Wellington. In contrast to Auckland last year, Wellington reversed the weather pattern and commenced the Rally with a fine sunny day but turned on rain for the last day.

At the Half A.G.M. at Taupo in June last, three Clubs were granted provisional affiliation. At this meeting two of them were accepted as fully affiliated members of the Association. These were South Canterbury Sun Club Inc. and Aurora Sunseekers Inc. whose grounds I had the pleasure of opening on the 25th August. Two new Clubs; South Auckland Sun Club and North Shore Sun Club were granted provisional affiliation.

As with all organisations, the depreciation of money has meant that the levy, or Capitation Fee, paid by Clubs to the NZSA has not gone as far as it used to do. Clubs therefore agreed to raise the Levy from 25 cents per member to 35 cents per member.

Two Clubs were granted loans from the Perc. Cousins Trust Fund. This depleted the available cash in the Fund and it will be necessary to build it up again before any other Club will be able to use it. At the Annual General Meeting of the Association, held on the last day of the Rally, considerable discussion took place as to how to build up this fund. While a portion of the levies paid by Clubs is allocated to the Fund, it is not sufficient to build the fund up quickly.

The Executive recommends to Clubs that the use of surnames within Clubs be encouraged. This, of course, does not suggest that surnames be disclosed to non members.

Owing to the fact that although they had applied for Incorporation, but not yet been granted the Incorporation, the N.Y.C. could not apply for full affiliation within the Association. However the Meeting recommended that Clubs should assist the formation of N.Y.C. branches and provide some facilities for them.

The most important and far reaching change that was made was in relation to the management and control of the NEW ZEALAND NATURIST. The Constitution of the Association was amended to provide for:

(a) A "NEW ZEALAND NATURIST Management Committee" consisting of a Chairman who will be a full voting member of the Executive, and three members. This Committee will be the link between the Executive and the Editor and will be responsible for ensuring that the present high standard of the magazine is maintained, that its contents are in accordance with NZSA Executive policy, and will keep a regular check on the financial state of the magazine.

(b) A full time paid editor.

Up until now, our magazine has been published by members giving their time and talents. So successful have they been that the magazine has grown to the stage where it can no longer be run on an amateur basis and we have now put it on a business footing.

This time last year we had hoped that by now the way would have been clear to proceed with free beaches. Unfortunately the wheels of Government move slowly. We have made our submission but the Amending legislation has not yet come before the House, consequently I am not able to report the progress I would have liked to have done. Nevertheless I must record the Movements' thanks to the members of the Free Beach Sub Committee for the sterling work that they have done.

The Rally was a great success. Owing to wet weather during the winter and spring, Wellington were not able to carry out all their planned Works programme but that did not prevent everyone from enjoying themselves. Wellington Club arranged for a very gracious lady, Mrs D. Nicholson, the Mayor of Upper Hutt, to open the Rally. Television was present and their Report was shown on the late News - without sound. As usual all the arrangements were fully planned and everything ran very smoothly. Our thanks were expressed directly to the Host Club at the end of the Rally, but I would be failing if I did not record them here. Each and every visiting member that I spoke to during the Rally commented on how well everything was running. Thank you Wellington.

youth
organiser's
report

From the start of my year's stint as youth organiser, it ought to be made clear exactly what I think is my scope of operations.

There will be general disagreement as to the actual age group which would come under my aegis. It may be said that it encompasses the ages from 10 to 25 years. However until such time as I am criticised for ignoring those above and below the teens, it is these folk I shall basically be considering.

It should also be made clear that the Youth Organiser is not necessarily connected with the Nudist Youth Club (Inc.), which is an autonomous club within the N.Z.S.A. The Youth Organiser is in fact the spokesman for the N.Z.S.A. in matters pertaining to youth. The ideal situation here is that the NYC and the Youth Organiser work in a complementary capacity. Although I now have no part in the running of the NYC I fully support it as the only true indicator of the active involvement of youth in New Zealand nudism.

Talking about youthful participation, about 25 teenagers recently had a great time at the Youth Rally in Palmerston North.

Wait a minute though! Only 25? Out of a total N.Z.S.A. membership of approximately 4,000? And most of these 25 were from Auckland! I make that one teenager out of every 160 members of the N.Z.S.A. considers it worthwhile getting together with other young nudists. The conclusion that I draw from this, and other things I have seen in nudism, is that most teenagers find nudism a bore.

A group of young people chatting in the grass

Why? I believe that many clubs tacitly agree with the opinion that we cannot cope with the problems of Youth in our movement and that it is better that they leave after their fourteenth birthday.

There is also a certain amount of apathy amongst the youngsters themselves. For example, I believe I am correct in saying that not one teenager from the whole of the South Island attended either the Wellington Rally or the Palmerston North Rally!

It is often said that it is not youth that people object to, but the NYC. To me this is just an excuse, which is proven by the fact that these clubs made no effort to encourage youth whilst they criticise a worthwhile attempt to do so. So far as I know, only two clubs, Waikato and A.O.H.C. have made any successful attempt to set up a youth group. Although I feel it was unnecessary for Waikato to create a separate youth group from the NYC, I do commend them for their enterprise and sincerity.

Of course nobody expects clubs which are only one or two years old to have a strong youth group, however older, well established clubs have a responsibility in this direction.

I hope around the time this magazine reaches the members to be able to circulate a questionnaire throughout the N.Z.S.A. This will, I hope, give an opportunity for clubs throughout the country to voice their individual opinions and ideas on youth.

Finally, I would like to thank Palmerston North Sun Club for hosting the sixth NYC rally. I would like to assure them that everyone involved enjoyed themselves very much.

rally
sport

With such a big programme to get through, four fine days are needed out of the five to successfully conclude the events and the first four days of the 22nd Rally were ideal. The fifth was ideal also - for ducks!

Twelve teams participated in the Volleyball competition and after preliminary games in two sections the teams split into groups of four to play for positions. Wellington Philip's team, all of whom play during the winter for an outside club, were far too strong and actually completed their matches without losing a game. However, their final match against A.O.H.C. Keith's team produced an exciting game. Auckland Composite Eddie's team played well to finish 2nd, with A.O.H.C. Keith 3rd and A.O.H.C. Roger's team 4th. It was satisfying to note entries from Wanganui, Gisborne-Taranaki and a N.Y.C. team this year. They all played commendably well for beginners. So, too, did a keen young team from Waikato Youth Group who were the winners of the junior trophy this year.

On the second afternoon the weather was cooler for the swimming gala - O.K. for spectators but a little unpleasant at times for competitors in the strenuous programme. Ron, Hawkes Bay, and the holder of the Doug Cousins Trophy for men had some stiff competition, notably in the Breaststroke event. In an exciting finish he just went down in the closest of touches to Peter (Wellington), but he was too versatile for the others and held his title. Jann (A.S.C.) showed her form delightfully and took the Women's title but only after spirited opposition from Lida, our surprise visitor from Rotterdam, Holland. Lida, who was swimming by invitation, finished a close second in both the Freestyle and Breaststroke events, but was rewarded when she won the Backstroke from Cherie (Hawkes Bay), with Jann third.

Some boys on a rock    Three boys chatting at a camp

The age-group swimming was keenly contested and was a triumph for Wellington and the Treanor family, Neil, Lesley and Anne. Coach Joan, was a very proud Mum. David (Wellington) and Gina (Wellington) swam well also and it was left for Guy (ex Wellington and now Hawkes Bay) and Deborah (N.Y.C.) to prevent a clean sweep.

A sidelight on the swimming scene was two notable underwater efforts. Brian (A.S.C.) watched the Wellington champion swim a mighty 3¾ lengths then took a deep breath and astounded all by completing 4 lengths!

Tenniquoits, a tough game at any time, had an added handicap when the weather turned bad and Judy and Linda (South Auckland) had to play a semi-final and final on a slippery court. Buckets of sand helped a little and the two girls, young and fit, played superbly against the experienced Philip and Carol (Wellington) and then in a great final in the rain against Lesley and Nohorua (Nelson). Their win was fully deserved. Lance and Susan (Gisborne) excelled in the Juniors event.

Conditions for table tennis at rallies are always difficult for players of this skilful game. Uneven surfaces and white canvas backgrounds have never made it easy. But Charles (A.S.C.) must have super sight for he continues to dominate the singles event. This year he was too steady for the aggressive Bevan (Nelson). Heather (Wellington) was the star lady player. A strong forehand helped her to win two finals and husband, Colin, helped her to win another.

Miniten, that most popular nudist sport, maintained a high standard throughout and on the final day in steady rain four Auckland girls sloshed their way through a three-setter which was probably the highlight. Helen and Jo Jo (A.O.H.C.) deserve all credit for their eventual win against club-mates Gillian and Jackie. A thorough soaking didn't dampen the spirits of these girls. (See poem following this report).

John (A.O.H.C.) and 16 yr old David (Wellington) also turned on a sound display in the wet singles final. Drenched and aching from back trouble, John managed to turn back a determined challenge from the improving youngster. Look out John next time you are in Wellington!

Petite and lovely Gillian (A.O.H.C.) was not in much trouble when retaining her ladies singles title. A worthy winner and a pleasure to watch her stylish play.

It was all Auckland in the senior miniten this time but Neil (Wellington) showed his versatility by winning the junior singles and doubles (with Peter) to give Wellington further hope for future rallies. Neil also demonstrated that, as well as being a good swimmer and miniten player, he knows how to wield a table tennis bat too! He certainly was a busy lad.

Though the sport ended on a damp note, the competition through the five days was far from dull and, indeed, it could be said that sport is alive and well in the nudist movement right now. We feel sure that the spirit engendered during this most enjoyable rally will be living once again in Christchurch a year hence.

the saga of the ladies doubles mini-ten finals 1974

or

"I WAS THERE"

It as the final of the ladies mini-ten.

Around the court was a veritable fen,

As the rain just poured down

On players naked and brown,

In a game like we'll n'er see again.

The court was awash,

And the players did smash

At the ball

If at all

It did bounce.     Not just splash.

The linesmen were dripping and drab.

At decisions, they just made a stab.

One crouched on a stool,

T'other stood in a pool

'Neath a brolly wrapped up like an Arab.

The girls battled on,

And hoped for the sun.

As each mother's daughter

Splashed and slid through the water.

It could not have really been fun.

The 'ballboy' an ancient skin-head

Trotting round, like a camel half dead.

Was one of those fools,

Not knowing the rules.

Thought that 'love' meant a game played in bed.

The losers put up a good fight.

They battled with verve and with might.

But their supporters had not

Come, to clap each good shot.

T'was a sad and a very sorry plight.

But the game it just went on and on.

Fifteen love. Six four and six one.

To the 'ballboy' so dense

It didn't make sense

Why each point was not counted as one.

It should have been shown on TV

For the world and his neighbour to see.

But a minority frown

On nude bodies all brown.

While they simper o'er "their cup of tea".

All the spectators where gathered as one,

'Neath a brolly, designed for the sun.

They cheered each side

And did not deride.

Which was frightfully sporting, By Gum!

The wind blew in gusts out there

And foiled the best play of each pair.

The four ladies played 'starkers'

Watched by men wearing 'parkers'.

It REALLY did not seem quite fair.

The umpire up high on his stool.

Tried to make up his mind how to rule.

To let the score stay - ?

Or to have a replay - ?

When a serve did not bounce from a pool.

The spectators were looking quite glum,

And the players weren't having much fun.

One ran over the line

Trod onto the slime,

Then slid over ten feet on bare bum.

The cup was just handed to Jo

Outside of the Ladies. We know

"The game is what counts".

"To give one's last ounce".

None the less t'was a rather bad show.

But Hellen and Jo-Jo we trust,

Will defend their new title, or bust.

So this is the end

My unfortunate friend.

But make seeing them at Christchurch a must.

looking
back
on the
sixth
youth
rally

"Can you remember where we vent for our Christmas holidays in '73 dear?"

"Now wait a minute, that was two years before we got married wasn't it? Of course I remember, we were at the Wellington and Palmerston North rallies."

"Yeeeah, sure takes you back doesn't it. Wow! We had great fun in those days. Do you remember the NYC crowd?"

"Could I ever forget them? Crazy kids, but great fun."

"I can remember, we arrived in Wellington two days before the rally and was it blowing! Erecting the tent was like controlling a spinnaker in a tornado."

"Yes, and some of the kids like Martin and Leslie were already there, couldn't wait for the start of the rally."

"We had to mow grass about three feet high on the terrace we were given for a camping ground, hard work that was, for the first day of my holiday!"

"It was funny the way the camp grew. First two tents, then five, then nine, until we had a semi-circle of tents surrounding the NYC flag. The cabin we had the use of was a godsend. I couldn't imagine us cooking in the tents or outside on the dry grass."

"Meal times were sure chaotic, most of us seemed to eat well, but I bet some of the kids got sick of toast and jam! I had to laugh at the look on some of the ASC members faces when they found they were camped next to the dreaded NYC lot. It turned out that they were the ones making all the racket at nights though!"

"Getting up in the morning in time to get the milk was the worst part of the day. We bought a chilly-bin to keep that sort of thing cool. A couple of days later Barry sat on it and went right through the lid!"

"It was obvious that Paul had put a lot of work into the NYC rally, especially the cookhouse. He had even thought of a brilliant way to conserve water."

"What was that?"

"Well can't you remember the tap that gave you an electric shock when you turned it on, quite a scream it was!"

"Oh yes, and then there was the only hot-water bath available, in the clubhouse. After half a dozen kids had gone through the bath water, the last one looked like he had a good sun tan!"

"Then there was the Talent Evening. Of course all the kids wanted to dress tip in drag. I can remember the stunned silence from the audience as we filed onto the stage. I think Carl had to take the prize for the number of wolf whistles he got. It's funny, it turned out that the audience was so confused at the spectacle that some of them didn't realise that there actually were girls on the stage."

Buket bing filled (cartoon)

NYC members in two boats

"The songs we sung were good too, although we were a bit weak on the NYC song: I think that was mainly due to the fact that Tony kept singing different verses from the rest of us!"

"I enjoyed the masked New Years Eve ball, although it didn't take long for me to lose my mask, and later on I only just avoided being thrown into the pool with all my clothes on."

"If cheering and noise won games, we would have swept the board in sports. Mind you, Jim and his team gave us some exciting games of volleyball, considering that some of the games were so early in the day that the kids were asleep on their feet."

"Most of us went in for the swimming sports. I was surprised that Ronald didn't put his competitors out of action right from the start, because once he had dived in there wasn't much water left in the pool! The swimming relay races on the last day were where we showed what we were made of. I think that most of us felt that it was drier in the pool; with the rain coming down in buckets."

"What I enjoyed best was travelling in our convoy of six cars to various places where we spent the day. There were the river pools above horseshoe bend, which were so peaceful, and the water was so clear. There were things like green and gold frogs, praying mantis, and big grey spiders which swam on the water, all there to make the girls stay as comfortable as possible!"

"Of course every time we stopped at another stretch of river Harry would get a sudden urge to build another rock dam. I think that river changed course more under Harry's hand than it had in the last 1,000 decades."

"There are some fantastic beaches around the Palmerston North club. Remember the one with the big black sand dunes that were great to roll down. It was there that we buried John and Ian up to their necks in sand. They thought it was great fun until someone suggested a hangi."

"Then we went into Palmerston North to do a bit of window shopping, and wandered around in the park before we came across the lagoon with the boats for hire. It wasn't long before we had five boats in the water. I remember that for about five or ten minutes the kids were content to quietly row up and down. After a while this became too tame and they progressed to splashing each other. Then it went to poaching oars off each other, and eventually even to boarding parties and kids deposited in the water. Nobody went home dry."

"Then there was Cheryl's much vaunted spaghetti. She was a great one for seasoning and herbs and things. Well I tell you, that spaghetti was hotter than the hottest curry I have ever had. That was the only time I can remember getting sunburnt on the inside!"

"Remember the barbecue we had on the beach the last night of the rally. We had sausages and jacket potatoes. When it got late we all drifted off the beach to the dairy for another drink. After we had been there for a while Ian came rushing in and told us Fred's car had got stuck in the sand and the tide was coming in. Everyone rushed to the cars and we raced back to the beach. One look at his car was enough, he was stuck in soft, wet sand, and already the largest waves were reaching his tyres. There was about a dozen of us and we all strained, lifted, pushed and pulled. For a while we thought that we would never do it, but then the car started to move forward, as soon as he felt this, Fred stepped on the gas and drove away up the beach as though all the bats in hell were after him."

"The last day was really quiet as one by one we packed up and left. The marvellous thing was that even though a lot of us came together not really knowing what to expect of the youth rally, everyone went home having had a wonderful time."

free
beaches
for
new
zealand

Just before Christmas I received a very sympathetic and interesting letter from Australia telling me how they are also battling for a free beach and that they are following our trials with great interest. Enclosed was a Christmas card with a free beach photograph and a car sticker bearing the words "Free Beaches for Australia". What a marvellous idea. While Australia is looking at us, we can learn something from Australia. I promptly started making arrangements for the production of our own car stickers, "Free Beaches for New Zealand."

Don't get the impression that this is a protest movement, it is not, but it will show that people outside our clubs are interested in freedom from clothes on the beach and in the water.

We should sell these stickers not only to our club members, but to any member of the public who is interested in the free beach campaign. If any local body should be in doubt about the interest in a free beach what better way to swing the pendulum of opinion in our favour than the exhibition by motorists of the "Free Beach" emblem.

Most clubs should by now have met their local Members of Parliament and Local Body representatives as suggested in our last edition. This is most important in the interest of good public relations.

First free beach logo

The attractive car sticker will be available to everyone shortly at a cost of approximately 30 cents each. Illustrated here in monochrome, it is in fact produced in three colours on a white background, it is about four inches in diameter and was designed by Bob McIver of Raymac Repro Art, Auckland.

South Australian Free

Beach Committee

The South Australian Free Beach Committee took their first venture to a "Free Beach" on Saturday, December 1, 1973.

A convoy of cars made there way to a selected beach between Maslins and Port Willunga about 30 miles south of Adelaide. Here over 200 people, Tindo members, fellow nudists from Yulti-Wirra Club and friends surfed, swam, played volleyball and chatted in groups.

The event, filmed by the ABC Channel 2 TV, was organised to show the general public how a free beach would be used if the law was amended to make it legal. State police said they would take no action provided no member of the general public was offended.

The beach used mainly by "surfers", who for the past two years have had it relatively quiet, raised no objections to the invasion. One even commented that it was "old hat" in Darwin.

Everyone who participated enjoyed the occasion and since there was no public outcry we can only assume that in time the day will come when we can choose either a visit to the beach or club.

For a club to cater for some 700 persons takes a bit of doing, but the Tindo Club of South Australia managed this without undue strain on the facilities provided (water, electricity, hot and cold showers, and toilets), when they were hosts to other clubs throughout Australia for the A.N.F. 1973 to 1974 Convention and Rally, held during the ten days from December 26, 1973 until January 4, 1974.

The local store keeper set up shop on the club grounds with deliveries of ice, milk, bread, general groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, and ice cream every day. The latter was essential as over the 10 days during the convention the weather was warm. Although it did rain for a couple of days during this period it timed its arrival to coincide with the A.N.F. Convention meeting held in the large clubhouse and helped to lay the dust and firm the sandy soil.

Prior to the Convention Tindo had installed extra water storage tanks; the existing water pumps were serviced and a new pump purchased. The septic system and soakage pit for the toilet and shower block were cleaned out and extended and with the updating of the electricity supply these services coped adequately with the demand even though the local township of Gawler may have had their supplies of double adaptors and extension leads depleted.

Sixteen Australian clubs were officially represented, but there were members present from other clubs too, also from New Zealand. Two fellow nudists from the U.K. represented the I.N.F.

Press and TV covered the official opening of the Convention, carried out by Rick, President of the Darwin Sun Club, introduced by Sandy, President of the A.N.F.

With excellent weather, success of the various sporting competitions was assured. Trophies were awarded for Miniten, Badminton, Tennis, Table Tennis, Swimming, and Volleyball. Smaller children's sporting events were arranged, and teenagers were generally included in adult activities. Three dances were held in the large clubhouse - an opening Gala Dance, the New Year's Eve Ball, and the Wind-up Spectacular Dance.

Theme at the Convention was "Free Beaches throughout Australia", and at the Convention Delegates Meeting future policies to be adopted were agreed upon. This important meeting was relayed to others strolling outside in the club grounds.

Interstate guests took the opportunity of going on a Showboat cruise along the Port River, visiting Adelaide, or the famous wine producing area - the Barossa Valley - the latter only a few miles away.

Guests were treated one warm and still summer's night to a professionally staged Cabaret-Revue on the open air stage. The 25 acts presented were mainly by Tindo members, though members from interstate clubs provided seven of these. The excellent slick-moving entertainment was thoroughly appreciated by the huge audience seated as if in some vast natural amphi-theatre surrounded by trees and bush.

Like all Conventions of this type, an enormous amount of preparatory work was undertaken. In particular Werner Dorfi (President of Tindo and Secretary of the A.N.F.) and Brian Day (Tindo Secretary) should be especially congratulated, and supporting them a hard working committee and large number of club members.

It was certainly the largest Convention and Rally ever held in Australia, and without doubt a very happy one. If future Conventions are as successful, then Australian clubs can look ahead to further progress and strength.

Naturally the most exciting things that have happened to us recently are the two rallies. I don't know of one youngster who came to the last two rallies who isn't looking forward to the next ones. Even so we were all a bit disappointed that we didn't get to meet any of the South Island kids. At least, we have been told there are some young folk down there!

We had youth members from Tauranga, Gisborne, Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington, and Palmerston North. Mix the six groups together, bake in the hot sun and boy, have you got some fun.

Mind you, we also got some business done, like electing the following committee to rule the N.Y.C. roost for 1974:

President, Emil Zwetsloot of Wellington; Vice-President, Peter Rebers of Auckland; Secretary, Kathy Wyeth of Palmerston North; Treasurer, Geoff Wyeth of Palmerston North.

Committee:

Lance Fairbrother of Gisborne, Stevan Fisk of Wanganui, Carl Neville of Auckland and last but not least Janet of Tauranga.

Of these, Kathy Wyeth is the one to write to if you need more information about the Nudist Youth Club. Her address is P.O. Box 1931 Palmerston North.

N.Y.C. Auckland

We are still recovering from the effects of the two rallies, so I guess it's a good thing we elected our committee in November before the rally. So fresh into the fray go:

President, Cheryl Hill; Vice-President, Margaret; Secretary, Peter Rebers; Treasurer, Harry Janssen.

Committee: Carl Neville, Leslie Graham, Vicky, and Conrad Sargent.

Just for now we are getting our bearings, but no doubt you will be hearing of our exploits in future magazines.

HBSC (drawing)

Wish you could throw off your clammy clothes and go free, feeling the sun, the air and the water all over you?

Feel that your body is entirely wholesome and no part of it shameful?

Wonder how it would be to meet other people who feel as you do, and had facilities for this nudist way of life?

In an easily accessible, quiet country setting, 10 acres of lawns, trees, play areas, swimming pools, campsites and lots of friendly people await you.

So make your wishes come true .... HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB INC.

Wanganui Sun Club Inc.

Oh boy, we have certainly had our fair share of fine weather this summer. The attendance at the club grounds has accordingly been very good with some of the members stopping over the weekend.

Our organised social programme lapsed at this busy time so we have had only two functions during the summer, the fireworks and the children's party.

The Christmas party as held in bright sunshine and was an improvement on the last few years. In keeping with the brightness of the day the occasion was enjoyed by children and adults alike. There were keenly contested races with some very close finishes, and the judges had a hard time picking the winners. There was much fun and laughter and somehow all the children ended up winning something.

There was a good representation of our members at the National Rally at Wellington. It was especially good to see the club represented in volley ball in the men's and the 'omens sections. It is some time since our club has fielded two teams like this. Apparently we had more success in the very early rallies. We may not have faired so eli this year but it has sparked off some enthusiasm and already the teams are in training for future contests. It is very good to see games being played at the club grounds, especially team sports. It is hoped that the future could bring some inter-club games with Palmerston and New Plymouth.

Our Winter swims and saunas will begin again soon and we hope to see plenty of visitors at these enjoyable evenings and keep your eyes open for the announcement of our Splash-in "74". 'There are no firm plans for it yet but it is too good a function to miss and it gets better each year.

If you would like to know more about our club write to Box 410 Wanganui.

Waikato Outdoor Society Youth Group

We went to the Rally in Wellington and teams entered in the sports in the junior section, we played in the table tennis, junior tenniquoit and junior volleyball. Table tennis we didn't do too well. Tenniquoits we also didn't do any good. Volleyball, well that's another story, you'll never believe this but we won the Congdon Junior Volleyball Trophy (thanks team).

Altogether we thought the Rally was a great success and the Youth Group enjoyed themselves.

We as a group would like to thank the Wellington Sun Club for their hospitality and well organised sports.

Hawkes Bay Sun Club Inc.

A contingent of twenty six of our members plus their families made it to the National Rally this year, and every one of them had a grand time, for which we salute the Rally organising committee. H.B. was again to the fore in the swimming sports with some good wins, our Volleyball team, although not in the top rankings, must have been the most vocally supported, and the entertaining skill of some of our gang certainly stole the show at the Talent Quest. Even at the New Year dance the crowd under the Hawkes Bare" banner had their share of the tons of fun which was abounding that night. Thanks Wellington for an excellent Rally.

Actually the Rally was a welcome break from our end of year activities. Over twenty cars turned up for a very testing but enjoyable car rally held just before the petrol saving restrictions were imposed. Then Santa and his semi nude clowns gave the kids a marvellous time at their Christmas party, and this was followed by a very tasty hangi and get together for the oldies. Between these activities we found time to welcome another dozen or so new members, construct and complete in three weekends our filtered kiddies pool, lay the concrete apron for our main pool, more than double our NZSA Raffle profits over last years record effort, and topped it all off by swelling our funds still further by selling another batch of our young pine trees as Christmas trees. This last effort we plan to develop into an annual event, with regular plantings and our advertising slogan "Sun Club Christmas trees are the best", we can put some of our spare acres to work and have an annual quick fire money spinner.

During and after the Rally we have had lots of visitors and campers from other clubs calling in, and quite a few or our folks have been touring around doing the same thing in other parts. It's a great way to get to know nudists elsewhere (and they are such nice people) and to see how other clubs are meeting the problems of growth and development in their neck of the woods.

So why not come over and see us sometime. Bring your caravan or tent, or our house sleeps up to a dozen and has good kitchen facilities. But please, if you are planning a visit our way, or to any other club for that matter, do drop us a line first to let us know who is coming, and when, and if we don't already know you, you should include a note from your club secretary confirming your membership. We like having visitors, but because we have had some doubtful enquiries in the past, you will save any embarrassment by writing ahead.

South Auckland Sun Club

The news we all have been waiting for: we have our own grounds! The SASC are now the proud owners of their own club property: some three acres and two roods (no rood comments) of fine land complete with stream just four miles from the centre of Papakura. Congratulations to the committee and Ernie in particular for the decisive manner in which this land was procured so close to civilisation at a time when property speculators are snapping up anything worthwhile.

We have a legacy of waving corn to contend with: you can't see the ground yet under the maze of maize, but once this is harvested we can start developing this beautiful site into a sunlovers' paradise. Incidentally, the corn will be standing on our land right through the sunning season and with all the new members eager to cultivate a tan this summer, it looked as if the members would be having trouble with their corns. Corny comments aside, approaches were made to the Powers-that-Be up at Oranui and an agreement was reached to enable SASC members to cultivate an AOHC tan this season. We cannot express our thanks to AOHC enough: their kindness and generosity with the loan of their facilities and grounds typifies the best that is inherent in the Naturist movement.

We were well represented at the Rally and were proud to bring home the Senior Tenniquoits Trophy, well done Linda and Judy.

South Auckland now has about thirty-six family units and publicity in the local press is bringing a steady stream of new members. A publicity campaign is planned early in the New Year to recruit as many new members as possible: a sort of strike while the sun is hot campaign. Two beach trips are envisaged and visits are planned to other clubs during the sunny season. Members of SASC hope to return the favours by inviting all Auckland clubs over for a day in the deep South next year. The fact that such trips will coincide with working-bees is purely coincidental, folks!!

Kowhai Valley Club Inc.

We haven't much to report this time. There have been such a series of hot summer Sundays that strenuous work was in abeyance, and our members have been luxuriating in the sun and in the swimming pool.

We were pleased to welcome several members from sister clubs - some for the day, and others camping over a period. A few of our own members also camped over Christmas and New Year, in caravan or tent.

A barbecue day in Spring, and a children's Christmas party in early Summer, were well attended and enjoyed by all.

By the time this goes into print for the March issue, the weather will have cooled down a little, and then we shall be making plans for further improvements to the grounds.

At approximately 900 feet above sea level, and overlooking the beaches of the West Coast, we fondly imagined that our club was probably the highest in New Zealand. But in the December issue we read that Taranaki club is situated at 1,150 feet! So it beats us! Congratulations to it.

Palmerston North Sun Club Inc.

We have completed a very successful summer, in new members and publicity.

Our lead as the largest sun club outside the main centres has increased. Palmerston North adult membership now puts us into fourth place.

The giving of club calendars to our members and the public has been well received. From comments at the Rally other clubs will be following Palmerston North's lead.

The N.Y.C. Rally was held on our grounds at the beginning of January. Lake Downs was a popular resting place for our many visitors on their way home from the Rally. They all enjoyed our restful country grounds.

Our new ablution block is now completed and in use. This building was paid for by members donations and is debt free.

It has been pleasing to see the many families who have joined us this summer. The family unit is the basis of this and any other sun club.

To future members who would like to join us, write now to our secretary, P.O. Box 980 Palmerston North. A club brochure will be sent and a visit to the club can be arranged. During the winter join us at our socials and visits to the sauna.

Since you already like the sunshine one way...
chances are you will like it all ways!

Less that 30 minutes drive from the city, a family playground is awaiting you ... the new individualist. In the 50 acres of beautiful bushland there is a heated swimming pool, sports court, clubhouse and large lawn areas for sunbathing. 'The kiddies court' is well equipped and complete with paddling pool.

Our members are mainly families, some single. Sun and fun loving, friendly sociable people. The Club is run by a progressive, no nonsense committee.

So if your life isn't changing for the better, change to a better life.

Otago Sun Club Inc.

We held a very peaceful Annual General Meeting on November 24 at the club grounds. Gordon once again is the President and the committee returned with one exception.

The committee presented to the members a proposition to purchase a ten acre property for a permanent home for our club.

Our President Gordon and his family spent a three week holiday on the Canterbury Sun Club grounds.

Our Secretary Lola and our PRO Les I represented Otago Sun Club Inc at the rally in Wellington. After the rally they travelled north and visited the grounds of the Hawkes Bay Sun Club, Auckland Outdoor Health Club, the Auckland Sun Club, the Waikato Outdoor Society, the Taranaki Naturist Club and the Palmerston North Sun Club. They got to know Ted the delegate of the new North Shore Sun Club and Noel, the President and his wife Patricia of the South Auckland Club.

Where ever they travelled they made friends, and the club members welcome was warm and friendly.

We would like to say many thanks to the clubs for their very warm hospitality.

A very special thanks to Muriel and Stan of Waikato for their hospitality and for their friendly advice.

In the new year we are looking forward to putting into practice what we have learnt from the North Island clubs.

We will continue our membership drive and we will continue to further the Naturist movement.

Gisborne Sun Club Inc.

To follow our activities from the news items in the last magazine our visit to the Taranaki Club's cabaret was most enjoyable. Ten of us attended and some of us feel that we see Russell Delacour more often than our own neighbours. Once again he pipped us at the post by arriving ahead of us in New Plymouth.

At this point we would like to recommend to all nudists visiting this western city that they stay at Streets Motel. These kind people even closed their tepid pool for us.

Labour weekend saw our "Switch-on" to the power, and the christening of our tenniquoit court. With members from Manawatu, Waikato and Rotorua, and a visit from Doris and Arthur from Whakatane saw the grounds functioning as we like to see them.

Early in December four of us attended the Tauranga Club's Christmas party at Sapphire Springs, near Kati Kati. This is a terrific place for nudists and even though we arrived a day early (by the message of an over-enthusiastic Tauranga member) we were still able to swim nude.

Our sympathy to the Tauranga Club who did not acquire the land as hoped.

A pre-Christmas barbecue evening was held at Mecca in the middle of December with a good muster of members and their children. This was followed by music and dancing.

Next came the Rally, and what a Rally! Thank you Wellington. We didn't miss out on any of the fun, nor did we miss out on a trophy as we won the junior tenniquoits. We even managed to bring home a Vice- President.

Travelling home from the rally most of our contingent visited the Palmerston North and Hawkes Bay grounds where they stayed overnight. Many thanks.

The block work on the pool is now completed and by the time you read this we should be swimming in it, and the tools have at last found their proper home in the tool shed at the back of the grounds. By the end of summer the front half of the grounds should be completed and this has been helped by a particularly generous donation.

The sun did us proud - and we fielded a strong team at the Rally. Once again we did our Community Cooking 'thing', joined, this time, by several of our friends in the A.O.H.C. contingent. And very successful it was. Our warmest thanks to our hosts at Wellington for all the facilities and help made available to us. It was a splendidly organised rally. Its difficult to single out any particular team for praise - but surely a very big vote of thanks is in order to Jeff and Mary for their terrific effort in organising every moment of the kids time with exciting events. We pulled off some creditable wins in the men's table tennis and the women's swimming and our youngsters did well in the miscellaneous races.

It's now high summer and we've a full programme ahead with, once again, great emphasis on inter-club activities. We plan visits to or from Northern Sun Seekers, Waikato Outdoor Society, South Auckland Sun Club and the North Shore Sun Club. And of course this season sees the introduction of individual inter-club visits between ourselves and A.O.H.C. We very much hope that Kowhai Valley will join us on this venture too.

Our pool is a continuing joy and a lot of work has been put into improving the filter system. A big effort is also under way to enlarge and improve the facilities for our many children. So once again it looks like being a very busy season with plenty of new faces and old friends on our grounds. Why not join them? - you'll be made very welcome.

Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc.

The National Rally is again behind us. And what a good time we had there. We proved ourselves very strong in sports, especially miniten. And what a fight our gladiators had to battle for their well earned victory. I am thinking how, on that last day, in pouring rain, those finals were played, with heavy balls and courts as slippery as wet clay.

On the home front we can report a summer full of continuous warmth and sunshine. Our camping grounds were full of visitors and members of overseas clubs. It certainly is nice to see this international friendship develop on our grounds.

Our second ablution block is now in full use and our drainage problems seem to be over after a frontal attack on the problem.

The third miniten court is now in use.

Very good memories we have of our very successful monthly social dance, especially the Polynesian night and the children's Christmas party.

We should not forget to mention a very successful beach trip together with other Auckland clubs and Northern Sunseekers. More than 120 members plus some non-members enjoyed the sun and sea.

We celebrated World Naturist Day with an "Open Day" in conjunction with the other four Auckland clubs. We hope to make this an annual event.

After the summer comes (we have to face it) the winter again. We are preparing for our weekly sauna's and monthly swim nights. We hope to hold a Swim Festival in an Olympic size pool. Further details will be sent soon to all clubs who are interested.

Northern Sunseekers Inc.

Any regular reader of these columns will have realized that a report from the Northern Sunseekers has been absent for the last couple of editions. The absence was caused by a committee reshuffle, which disorganised us over the last deadline.

Our opening day on October 21, 1973, started off with bags of enthusiasm, the first working bee of the year and a small band of enthusiasts began to clean up the camp, drain and clean the pool and improve the access road. The access road was quite bad in places and unfortunately Alan and Val's car got badly stuck and it took three hours of digging before we decided to get the farmers tractor. The ease with which the farmer extricated the car put us all to shame. The worst spots in the drive were soon fixed with ten yards of metal and a bit of perspiration.

Our first event of the season was a Guy Fawkes night barbecue and was enjoyed by adults and children alike. We also had two American visitors, Joe and Cathy, who came out for the day and were very welcome. We were very lucky because although there were heavy showers all round we had a warm dry day.

The next function was new to us. We had an "Open Day" and it was well patronised. About a dozen subsequently joined. A chap from the N.Z.B.C. who came to interview members and guests was soon in club uniform and joining in the activities.

A couple of families made the trip to Auckland to thoroughly enjoy the hospitality of ASC at their dance. Thank you Auckland Sun. We had a surprise visit by Santa at the club grounds. The children were thrilled, and the adults amazed by the luxurious growth of beard which reached almost to his knees.

Our treasurer gained us $65 by applying to the Council for a grant to help defray costs of a trampoline and getting one third of the price donated. It was part of the $100,000 which the government had allowed for sports and recreation clubs. The following is a quote from the local paper on the subject of this award:

"About to Join? - All that recent publicity about nudists in the North seems to have paid off for Northern Sunseekers.

This week it was among eleven organisations recommended by the Whangarei City Council for a Government sports and recreation subsidy.

The nudists will get $65 toward a trampoline - although the council was not sure if nudism qualified as 'sport' or 'recreation'. But it did seem to feel that nude trampolinists would be at least 'entertainment'!

So much so that nearly all the male councillors volunteered to officially present the new equipment."

Wellington Sun Club Inc.

Hello again from the Sunny Capital. Recently we ran an advertisement in the Evening Post and response was good, at the same time our P.R.O., talked to a reporter and the result of this was an unfortunate news item a few days later. This item resulted in various people coming directly to the grounds.

In spite of the sceptic's comments a very energetic works manager and a small number of willing helpers completed the pool complex - now comprising a main pool, learner's pool and kid's splash pool - before the beginning of the rally. Even the weather was kind until the last day and my next door neighbour asked me, apropos the wet final day, if we all wore clear plastic raincoats.

A group from our club intend spending Anniversary weekend really roughing it at Henry's farm in the Wairarapa. They assure us that 'wild game' is usual on the evening menu - rabbit might be more like it.

We have organised a long playing record - classical on one side and pop songs on the other. The price is only $3.99 and they are available from P.O. Box 2854, Wellington.

Southern Sun and Health Club

That Golden Oldie "A Good Time Was Had By All" certainly was true when Southern Sun and Health (Invercargill) had it's first Barbecue and Guy Fawkes night on their new club grounds down by Oreti Beach.

After a literally washed-out Labour weekend, when it would have been labour for clearing the flax and the area for the new club house (permission awaiting, etc), the November 4 Barbecue got off with a bang and a flash: Bang for Bangers - edible - also Chinese type, and Flash - as the bonfire was lit and barbecue stoves were tickled up with lighter fuel, etc.

Popular man, this Guy Fawkes - there were three of him for burning that night, provided by the kids of the club.

A lot of hard work and much sweat had been put in to clear some of the ground by members for the event and the area was convenient for the one main topic of conversation, namely a name for the club grounds. It was put forward that members think up three names and submit them to the Committee.

Then, after much discussion but not much mind- bending work, arrived at a name from suggestions and designs put forward by one of the members. The Southern Sun and Health Club grounds would be "Flaxhaven". In the circumstances appropriate, seeing how much flax had to be removed, and interruptions from the low-flying squadron of the local Kamikaze club, the club grounds being in the permitted low-flying area for the local aero-club.

Gisnaki Sun Club Co-operated

Let me start by saying many thanks Wellington for a fabulous Rally. From the first day there was plenty for all to do, starting with the A. G.M. where we saw new clubs granted provisional affiliation to the N.Z.S.A., various sports events like myself being dragged out of bed to play volleyball at 8.30 a.m. Not the best way for your nervous systems to start the day, but great fun. Then as usual a great New Year's Eve Dance and a dunk in the pool to wake you up. A really great concert - your only slip up Wellington was not charging for entry - that concert was worth a dollar of anybody's money.

I have made mention of new clubs but did anyone know a New Town was borne at the Rally - Gisnaki. We were often asked where is it, we can't find it on the map. You won't either, if you are thinking of visiting, here is roughly how to find it. It is south of Auckland but north of Wellington, if you are leaving from Auckland it is between 235 and 327 miles on the west and east coast. Lake Taupo is about centre. The boundaries are Mt. Egmont and Poverty Bay, It will take you some time to look around as there is a lot of countryside between suburbs so happy hunting.

I will finish by saying: "If you are a nudist and have not been to a rally THEN GO TO ONE. If you are a non-nudist then for goodness sake RIGHT NOW join your local club and you too go to the next Rally, you won't regret it. Don't just sit around when you get there, get yourself shanghaied into everything that is going, it doesn't matter if you are 9 or 99, get with it and you will have plenty of fun and a suntan to boot. See you at the next Rally for sure."

Aurora Sunseekers Inc.

Well folks, it's news time from the premier club of the deep south. We say premier because our membership recently tolled the 100 mark. Originally we had hoped to have the 100 by December but we failed. However its just three weeks past our projected date so we can't complain. Now we aim to try for the 200 mark by next Christmas.

Our biggest project is our pool but alas it is not finished. In November we had a lot of rain and all the hard work digging out the foundations was washed in again and again and again. Then came the Christmas break so it looks as if we won't have it ready until next season, but oh boy next year!!! Well, with the fantastic weather we have been having no one wants to work. Especially when one can lie underneath an apple tree and pick the delicious fruit. However we realise it takes a few years to establish a club. Even so we have had visitors from far afield. Not just visitors from New Zealand but Australians and a couple from Portland, U.S.A.

We also have to report that we have our first member by conscription. Yes our members Joe and Barbara have given birth, jointly so I'm told, to a BBB (bouncing baby boy).

news from
the clubs in
australia

Naturi N.S.W.

Naturi Club is situated in some beautiful bushland country about an hours drive from the Capital City of Sydney. N.S.W. It was first formed about 8 years ago and consists of an area of 70 acres. The centre of the property was an ideal spot for a Nudist club as it needed no screen fencing but had its natural screening in the form of an orchard on one side and a rocky area with all kinds of gum trees and thick bush surrounding the remainder. Down through the centre a stream of pure water stole silently through the bush and it was decided to make a dam here for future use when the club was formed. So the work of creating a nudist club began. Incidentally the name "Naturi" was well chosen by the owners, it is an aboriginal word and it means "High Sandy Ground". The dam when completed was about 40 ft. in diameter and 7 ft. deep. Next came a small concrete swimming pool 12 by 12 ft. and partially tiled. Then a Sauna and a shower room was constructed and later tiled. The Sauna is a Swedish Wood Burner type and heats up in about 45 minutes. Fifteen to twenty minutes in the Sauna followed by a cold shower and a quick dash into the pool even in the middle of winter is most invigorating and beneficial. The next thing to be planned was a Septic Toilet Block to take the place of the objectionable "Old Pans". Incidentally the water supplied to the shower room and the toilets is pumped up from the dam to a tank placed high upon a steel stand and the water gravitates from there to where it is needed. No fires are allowed because of the danger of bush-fires, but a special area is set aside and two barbecues can be used for outside cooking. An area of the bush has been cleared and three tennis courts have been constructed with high wire netting surrounds. Two of these courts were built on a slightly sloping ground and so it became necessary to step one court a little lower than the other with a suitable rockery dividing them. Eventually rockeries were constructed around the outside of all three courts and all kinds of suitable plants 'ere donated by the club members and at flowering time it presents a very colourful picture. Lawns have also been laid out at various places for sunbathing and resting and these are very much in demand during the summer months. The club also has a large above ground swimming pool for adults and this is circular and 30 ft. in diameter. It is kept beautifully clear by a filter system and a surface skimmer and in the hot weather is most inviting. A large club house has been built and this is also a boon to our members especially in the inclement weather. Inside the club house there is a billiard table, a table tennis set, and a library and quite a number of tables and chairs of a rather elaborate type. We have not forgotten the children. A large area has been set aside for them and enclosed with chain wire fence. The area is furnished with a trampoline, swings, slippery dip, see-saws, gymnastic bars and a sand pit for the tiny tots and so on. The membership at this date is about 80 adults and the club is managed by the owners and a club committee consisting of a chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Maintenance Committee, Sports Committee and Social Committee making an active working committee of eleven members. We invite visitors from Bona-Fide Naturist clubs from any part of the world, who must first make application in writing to our Proprietors who will extend to them an invitation to the club and instructions of how to get there. This is only a brief description of what has been done and are doing and for anyone seeking further information contact may be made by writing to Box 11, P.O. Berowra, N.S.W., 2081, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope.

Darwin Sun Club, Northern Territory

This time of year is a mixed one for our club, with members going on leave, others leaving the Territory, usually a fairly quiet membership period, but, because of the wet, a most enjoyable time to use the club grounds. We hope to see an increase in club attendance at the grounds. We certainly have good attendance for all the social functions held over the festive season.

Rich and Peter represented us at the A.N.F. Convention at Tindo and we were pleased to see so many people there. It was certainly a most successful Rally with plenty of press and television coverage.

We have received quite a few donations from individuals and other clubs for our court costs, and for these we are extremely grateful. All donations have been put in Social Committee funds and all Free Beach costs are paid from that account.

Our Christmas Dinner was held at the Sand Pebbles restaurant at Rapid Creek on October 8. At $13 per double including five-course dinner the place was packed to capacity. This was a very successful function.

The children's Christmas party was held on October 16 at the club grounds. Santa arrived and the children had a wonderful time.

New Year's Eve saw us all at the home of Mary-Ellen and Allan for a party to see the New Year in. This was the best new year's eve party ever. Thank you both.

This year we hope to have an informal gathering at least once a month at the club grounds for discussions, cards, or just good relaxing company.

Stubby coolers bearing the club emblem are available from Roger and Julie at $4 each. These are very well done and your own name may be put on if you care to place an order with the committee.

The area immediately to the side of the pavilion is being planted with lawn, this should improve the appearance of the grounds.

Kiata Country Club

Hello again from Kiata. There was an inter-club tennis tournament held on the club grounds during the long weekend and there was some interesting tennis played. Kiata presented a trophy to the winning club and this will be contested annually. We paid all the rainmakers in Australia three bangles and a necklace apiece to go on strike for that weekend.

The Christmas Party went quite well considering the day started in a most unpromising manner but the sun finally broke through and all the children present received a present. Just to be different we had two Santas - such is the result of inflation - so the kids had two hand-outs.

I was not present for the New Years party but I am told those who were there had a good time.

A vote of thanks is due to John and Monica who have worked diligently for some time to turn the volley ball court into a mini-ten court and I believe they intend to put up another row of chicken wire to reduce the need to make excursions into the bush to retrieve errant balls.

Not many of our members went to Tindo for the convention so we were not very well placed in the sports events. The organisation was very good - now we know why Werner wears feathers in his cap!

The river trip is worth a mention as it provided excellent value at $4 and was enjoyed by all those who went, so much so, that there were a good many sore throats the next day. Truly, a good time was had by all. I don't know how we can match the river trip unless we all go to Manly on the ferry and take over the beach - that should be good for a giggle.

Northside Country Club

The painting of the outside of the club hut and toilets was completed over the holidays. Thanks very much Rob for donating a trophy cabinet to us. We already have a new trophy to put in it, namely the swimming one. In 1974 we will be competing in volleyball, tennis, table tennis and swimming so lets hope we have some more trophies by the end of the year.

A beautiful day was held by all fellow nudists at Corio's inter-club day. It went without a hitch from start to finish. Helios won the volleyball trophy.

Spielplatz's inter-club day was not quite so fortunate. It was very windy and the rain came late in the day. Despite this it was a very enjoyable, relaxing day. The children's Christmas party was held on December 16, Father Christmas arrived at 3 pm.

Over the Christmas holidays Gino treated the children to a "Pizza afternoon". - Thank you Gino.

The mini golf ground development is off to a great start and a few more helpers with set determination will help it along it's way to success. We hope the course will be enjoyed by everyone in the near future.
