EDITORIAL

Christmas is nearly with us and another year nearly over. With the advent of Yuletide festivities it is usual for greetings and best wishes to be banded back and forth. This year in addition to heartfelt thanks to my Editorial team, I wish to thank the ever increasing numbers of the general public who are purchasing "New Zealand Naturist". Without this public support, evinced by increased bookshop sales, on both sides of the Tasman Sea, it is doubtful if we would have been able to continue publication in the present form.

We believe that the format and content of this publication since Issue Number 79 is reflective of nudism and the second half of this decade. The support we have had, through increased sales, is in our opinion confirmation that we are "on the right track" as regards content.

So a big "Thank You" and best wishes for Christmas and The New Year to all our friends and supporters.

Have Fun in the Sun.

Con Chignell,
Editor.

"WHAT'S IT REALLY LIKE?"

We were sitting around the Editorial table the other night, working on copy for this issue, and while we try to keep strictly to the business in hand, occasionally we digress and a bit of off-the-job conversation results. The other evening one of the Editorial team said, "I had a fellow bail me up at work the other day. I'd told him I was a club member and he wanted to know what it was all about. He said to me, "What's it really like?" He wasn't looking for moralising or philosophy; he just wanted to know what it was really like. Could we run an article on it?"

It's hard to tell a non-nudist what it's really like, but we listed a few of the questions we're most often asked with answers which may help tell what Club nudism is all about.

"What's it really like on your first day at a club?" Various answers to this one, various reactions from first day visitors, but if your state of mind is such that you're prepared to visit a club, it's usually an easy thing to take off your clothes. Most clubs work on the idea that club grounds are a place where you can remove your clothes if you so desire; there's no compulsion to undress, but it's remarkable how quickly newcomers or trial visitors do disrobe. It's remarkable too, how little notice is taken of newcomers. If, once undressed, they want to seek out their own little corner of the grounds and keep to themselves, that's fine, If they want to sit quietly near another group, to watch and size up the situation and perhaps after a time pass the time of day as a means of getting into the conversational circle, that's fine. If they arrive as newcomers, strip off their gear, and go straight into a game of volleyball, fine! If you're not too sure of yourself - and this sometimes happens when there's one member of a married couple who's very keen, while the other's not too sure - you can take your time. Sometimes you'll notice a new member who for the first few visits strips only as far as panties and bra or briefs, and then one day, it's all off. New members are sometimes apparent for the first few visits because they show paler skin where bikini or shorts used to cover, but, chameleon like, they're soon indistinguishable from the rest.

And when you do get it all off, what's it like? Well, I do remember that the first walk over to the shop, past all those people and the groups on the lawn, was a bit unnerving, but no one was interested in my body. (Nudism can be very upsetting to the ego.) People nodded to me in friendly fashion, smiled at me, said "G'morning," and that was all. It was very easy.

"Where do you get undressed?" Anywhere. Some people arrive at the club grounds and undress there and then in the parking area. Some seek out friends and undress in leisurely, casual fashion while exchanging hello's. Some may undress in the shower blocks; I don't know whether this happens or not, because no one's much interested in such things. However, propriety does come into this matter of undressing. Don't think that anything goes; the Committee would certainly have something to say if couples or individuals undressed in an erotic fashion, but normal decency is the norm. Remember that a nudist club is simply a place where you can, if you wish, take off your clothes without risk of offending anyone. I suppose it follows, therefore, that you take them off in a way which won't cause offence. Again, this is something I haven't given much thought to, because the taking off of clothes is not the sort of thing a nudist worries too much about.

"What's it really like if your body is different from other bodies in shape or size or whatever?" Much reading on this subject, coupled with my own observation, has finally convinced me that there's only two types of bodies, the His-type and the Her-type. Within these two basic groups there are variations of size and shape, but the variations are so minor a thing as to count for nothing at all. In my home club there's many variations of the His-type, similarly with the Her-type. Some - of both types - are lovely to see, others are just stock, run-of-the-mill shapes and sizes; we have physically handicapped members, an age range from a few days to several score years and ten. In no way should you worry about your body - bodies are not what nudism is all about.

"Nudism calls to mind a picture of well tanned bodies. What's it like if you're one of these people who just doesn't tan?" Think nothing of it. I'm one of the fair skinned people who just can't tan; at the end of the season I might, with luck, finish up a sort of pale biscuit colour or maybe cafe au lait. If I'm at the club on a scorching day, I rapidly turn burnt carmine while all around are bodies of mahogany and walnut. Strangely enough, burnt and all as I may appear, the skin does become accustomed to the sun. I may not tan, but there's not the stinging burn one associates with a bad day on the beach. I'm well aware that, as a blond, blue eyed type I do run a greater risk of skin cancer than do my brown eyed, brunette friends, but I do wear a hat, I do use screening creams. But I'm also aware that I could quite easily get run over by a bus.

By now it's probably evident that I, the writer of this piece, am a male so I guess it's time for the sixty-four dollar question -

"What's it really like when you get an erection during afternoon tea on the club lawn?" I'm not the right one to be doing this article, because that's something else I can't answer; it's never happened to me nor so far as I have seen or am aware has it happened to other male club members of my acquaintance. "What a pathetic, sexless lot!" says you, but what I have said is true.

A nudist club is not what the uninformed outside layman might like to think it is; as club members, we're aware that we're surrounded by naked people. Some are beautiful to look at and as with all things of beauty they merit and so do get more than a second glance - I'd be a fool and a Philistine to try to pretend otherwise. Some of these people around us have penises, some have breasts; we're aware of this too, but somehow sex doesn't come into it. Yes, strange and true, but in the ordinary come and go association at a club, there's no male or female - there's just people.

With that said, let's come back to the question: I suppose if such a thing as an erection did arise, you could roll over and lie on your stomach, or you could ask everyone to keep their eyes skyward in case there's any flying saucers about. Again from my own experience, you're more likely to see a flying saucer than an erection at the club; I think I've seen a flying saucer.

"What's it like when the club is closed? What do you do in winter?" The first part's easy - clubs are never closed. Each member of my club has a key to the grounds and club house so we come and go as we wish. If I want to go up to the club on a wet windy winter's day, I go. If I decide after work on a mild autumn evening that this is just the night for a barbeque at the club, I go. Most clubs do have rules regarding non-member visitors, but a prior word to a Committee member usually clears the way for taking guests along on a day's visit.

What do we do in winter time? The same as we do in the summer - if it's a good clear sunny day, and if we feel like it, we go up to the club. It's amazing how warm some corners of the grounds can be, even in July or August. Social activities come well to the fore during winter. Swim nights at tepid baths, sauna nights are a popular part of the winter scene, as are disco evenings at the club, card evenings, fancy dress parties, whatever. (Nudists do have a little more scope at fancy dress parties; quite fetching outfits can be tailored from cellophane. And it's much more realistic if the Maori warriors don't have to wear football shorts under their piopios.)

"What's it like when you suddenly, unexpectedly, come face to face with the boss's wife in the middle of the club lawn and neither of you knew that the other was a nudist?" You'd probably find it an easier encounter than it ever could be in the office or at the end-of-year party. There's more than just a freemasonry among nudists; there's a natural, easy-to-wear (!) comradeship that transcends age, social status, sex, all the inhibitions and restrictions of the textile world. In my other life, I'm a school teacher; almost daily I speak to or nod to a couple of youngsters whom I see on most weekends at the club. It may happen that we swim together nude in the club pool and the next time we meet it's in the school assembly hall but I've never had any problems with those kids, and I'm pretty sure they're the last ones I'll have problems with.

"You've just made passing mention of children at the club. What's it like for youngsters?" For children, nudism is the best of all possible worlds. The expression "A healthy mind in a healthy body" was never more true than when applied to children at the clubs. From a practical, every day point of view, too, club life for children couldn't be bettered. In my home club, there's wide lawned expanses, there's bush walks and trails, tree and forest huts, a skateboard track, swimming pools, games courts, barbeque areas, trampolines and other games gear, a tremendous place for youngsters. Can you see your kids up there, for weekends or longer summer holiday periods, in the tent or caravan, naked in the open air with room to run and romp and swim - can you think of anything better for youngsters? (No, they're in no way self conscious; for the first five minutes, perhaps, if they haven't been used to seeing Mum and Dad or other adults unclothed, but after that quick initial sizing up of the situation, there's nothing but wonderful enjoyment. There's not many problems of generation or other gaps in nudist families. And if they haven't yet seen adults naked, isn't it time they did, in an open friendly natural fashion rather than by peeping around toilet or bedroom doors?)

"What's it really like during an ordinary weekend or holiday period at the club?" Well, if you're not a club member, I can only say it's out of your world. Groups or singles on the lawn, talking, lazing, reading, sleeping under sun umbrellas or full stretched in the sun; vigorous types playing volleyball, tennis, mini-quoits, swimming or playing water polo in the pool - have you ever swum nude? You've done that, and found it smooth and serenely satisfying on that one day when you found a secluded stretch of river bank where you could slip off your costume without fear of detection. Well, have you ever played water polo in the nude? The excitement, the vigorous action and shouting, that tremendously exhilarating thrill of shooting your body, nude, up out of the chill of the water, momentarily into the warmth and clear bright light of the sun, to propel the ball before you fall back into the pool. You haven't done that? Man, you've got an awful lot of living to do!

Some people, of course, do none of these things during the weekends. They just set up their tents or caravans, and have a quiet weekend, really away from it all. Club houses are usually well equipped with electric stoves, refrigerators, hot water systems. You can, if you want to get away from it all, holiday without a stitch to your back the whole summer season through.

"What are members really like? Who joins nudist clubs?" An easy one to answer; anyone can join, but with one proviso - intending members are usually interviewed by club committee members before they are invited for a trial visit to the club. There's nothing fearsome or intimidating about these interviews; Committee people don't appear on your doorstep wearing long raincoats ready to be shed and so reveal their all as soon as they're safely in your lounge. Interviews are very discreet occasions. Again from my experience, you could almost have other visitors present in your lounge during such a session and they'd be hard put to know why the interviewing pair were there. But don't go thinking that interviews are a mere formality; if it was felt that you were not the type for the club, you would be told so, Occasionally mistakes are made, the wrong person does get through the screening process. If such people do become club members and their conduct causes concern or offence, they are politely asked to surrender their key. Most clubs have a twelve month probation period; at the end of that time probationary members are accepted as full members providing no written complaint has been received from any full member.

Not all clubs use the home interview as a means of determining suitability of applicants. Some clubs work on a trial visit system, where hopeful members, having written to or phoned a club secretary, are invited for a day's visit. Usually such folk are met at the club gate by a committee member who takes them on a brief tour of the club ground then leaves them to see for themselves what it's all about. After this trial visit the prospective members wait for committee consideration of their application for entry and in due course will be admitted (all being well) on a twelve month probationary basis.

Some clubs hold an annual open day, when a general invitation is issued for the public to come and view club activities. Membership application forms are available on these days for those people who find the idea of social nudity an attractive one. Such open days are usually advertised in the Personal or Public Notices columns of daily newspapers; some clubs report over 200 visitors on their open days, with a fair percentage applying for membership.

Don't be put off by thinking it's hard to get into clubs. A moment's reflection will convince you that such precautions are a very desirable thing.

Fees? They vary, from thirty or forty dollars for your first year (for a couple) to over one hundred dollars. Enquire from your nearest club.

"What if I don't want people outside the club to know I'm a nudist?" That's your affair. Club members are discreet people; if you meet a club member in Woolworths on a Friday night, don't get worried. At the most they might ask you, "What do you reckon the weather's going to be like tomorrow?"

At the club, members are known by first names only; I have many good club friends whose names I don't think I've ever heard, and as for occupations or places of work, yes, some I know, but there's a lot I don't I understand from snippets I've heard that my club numbers builders, teachers, a doctor or two, company directors, labourers, at least one University lecturer, I think there's at least one minister of religion, there's a cartographer, there's factory workers, there's artists, a couple of potters, at least one writer, a landscape gardener - open the Yellow Pages at random, close your eyes and prick with a pin, and you're likely to land on an occupation represented by one or several club members.

"You've told us all that, now, what's it really like?" No way can I tell you what it's really like. Now it's over to you. Turn to the club directory at the back of this issue, phone or write to your nearest club secretary, then come and see for yourself.

It's the only way you'll really know.

Ron. A.O.H.C.

ACCESS '78 - PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE OF SOCIAL NUDITY

Many, many people, in their homes or on secluded beaches throughout N.Z., practice nudism every day. This is an accepted part of many peoples' life styles these days.

BUT Social Nudism, that is to mix nude with people outside of your immediate family or close friend circle, is quite a different matter even in 1977.

Well, the New Zealand Nudist Federation Inc. has successfully applied to South Pacific Television for 15 minutes airtime on one of their Access programs in early 1978 to show that social nudity can be a most desirable and acceptable style of life.

I plan to produce a program not of crowds at national rallies or sports weekends or contrived situations on ideal days with beautiful (physical) bodies but of everyday activities at a large club, small club and beach with a good cross-section of membership.

The kind of situation that any member of a club or free beach group finds themselves in during any weekend of the year will hopefully be caught on film for the public to see as a healthy, happy, desirable and ACCEPTABLE way of life for everybody (excuse the pun!) no matter what their age, social status or the condition they be in.

With the large membership enjoyed by the Auckland clubs it wasn't difficult to find some members experienced in T.V. production. And as is typical these members are being most generous with their time and expertise to help me with this production for the N.Z.N.F.

All clubs will be told viewing time, if possible, in time to inform their members who in turn should spread the word to their friends and the public.

N.Z.N.F. OFFICERS REPORT

President      IAN FAIRBROTHER

There has always been some differences of opinion in whether sport should hold such a prominent place in our Federation but in recent years these differences have appeared to become more pronounced especially when it comes to Rally time.

I believe though that had not all the sports and their many trophies been the overriding interest at the Rallies, the Rallies themselves would not have attracted such numbers as they have done in the past. We would be more likely to have stayed at our home clubs during this period to laze around in the sun or gone to the nearest quiet beach to enjoy the picnic with the inevitable sand sandwich. If competitive sport were to be downgraded there is no doubt in my mind that over half of the members in the country would quickly drift away from the movement to find their relaxation elsewhere. These would be the people who have stayed for many years because of their love of the competitive games. These ones we could not afford to lose as generally they also hold executive positions in their separate clubs or, if not, certainly help a new committee because of their knowledge of the past. But for all this there must be some form of enjoyment for everyone and as I understand it this is what Gisborne has tried to plan for during the '77 Rally, so not long after receiving this magazine we shall all know whether this is possible.

Women's Representative      JENNIFER FAIRBROTHER

Surgery, all kinds, all sorts of places and the effect it has on some people can be devastating. There are so many kind words, suggestions advice, and often these do more harm than good.

There is one operation that I think must have one of the most dramatic effects on a person and that of course is mastectomy. Most women want to hide away and not be seen again

A thought one woman kept in her mind was this, "I am now a healthy woman. What would have happened if I had done nothing about it?"

One thing I want to say to all people who have a debilitating scar or 'after effects', don't hide away. Let your nudist friends help you, they are the only people who are interested in you as a person, not what you look like or what or who you are. And from experience I know that the sun does wonders for the healing of post operative wounds.

Secretary      LES WELLINGTON

There should be some degree of satisfaction within the Movement over the actions of the Federation during the past six to twelve months.

The Federation has evolved, by the wishes of the members representatives, from The Sunbathing Association, to the Nudist Federation. We have a completely revised and registered set of Rules and Constitution. Substantial progress has been made on the Club directory which should prove invaluable to travelling NZ. nudists. The major job, undertaken by Colin Brown of Wellington Sun Club, of updating and rewriting the Sporting Rules Handbook has been completed and Clubs and Club members now have available to them a most valuable guide.

These of course are only one or two things that we have been able to achieve this year. One of my main concerns has been to try to keep Clubs informed of what the Federation has been doing. I see communication between the Federation and the Clubs of major importance. Communication is therefore effected by the Magazine, and regular circulars. Just as important of course is the distribution of Club circulars to other Clubs, so that we can all learn of what we are doing from up North, to way down South. Regular communications in this way, as well as regular contributions to the Magazine are our lifelines.

The Federation is able to offer a number of services to Clubs and their members, such as passports, both national and international, developing and printing of films, advice on numerous matters and information on overseas events. I have regular enquiries from interested persons to whom I refer to Clubs, and no doubt many of these become members of good standing. It was a pleasure just a short while ago to receive a letter from Ecuador and be advised that a sun club was being set up there. Perhaps if some New Zealanders are travelling that way they would like to look up the Inca Sun Club.

By now secretaries and delegates of Clubs will be making last minute preparations for our 1st A.G.M. to be held at Tolaga Bay. There will most likely be a large amount of work to come out of the meeting. However I am sure that we will all approach this, as we do now, in the interests of the nudist movement, and nudists generally.

Treasurer      JOHN JENNINGS

The long hot summer has well and truly started and the new concept of a National Rally away from the main centres is now a reality.

Again let us look forward to a solidarity and unification of direction to take our movement on to the great unconvinced majority. Our Federation needs the support of all clubs and all members of clubs. Let us all work toward that end. Merry Christmas.

AROUND THE CLUBS     by Nomad

This is one of the several articles we'll be running in Naturist, giving club members a brief impression of what other clubs can offer. Purposely we're not having these written by members of the clubs concerned; it's our thought that as the articles are being written mainly for the benefit of touring visitors, we'll do our looking through visitors' eyes.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

We New Zealanders, in our mind's eye, see our country as a land of sea girt hills, of bush clad valleys and grassy wind brushed slopes lying to the sun, so when the hustle of the workaday world really puts on pressure and we close our eyes to shut out the confining walls of office or shop, it's ten to one that we wish ourselves up on one of the high hills, truly away from it all. And if you're a nudist in that Monday to Friday treadmill, you're doubly liable to ease your finger around the inside of your collar and think of yourself as not merely up on that hill, but as naked and free on those grassy slopes, with the bushed valleys at your feet and the sea beyond, and all this less than three quarters of an hour's drive from Auckland's central Post Office.

Do you see yourself in that scene?

Well, if you do and if you'd like to turn vision into reality, get yourself up to the Kowhai Valley grounds. (Kowhai Valley, high on a wind brushed hill? Good question. Once there was a valley of kowhais; the club was forced to move but happily the name stayed unchanged.) The road up to Kowhai may make you wonder if you're climbing to the end of the world. Hilly, metalled, swinging up and around clay banks and bushed shoulders, but all the while further from the city, closer to the sky, until you get to Kowhai.

What did I say at the beginning of this piece? Sea girt hills, bush clad valleys, and grassy wind brushed slopes? Yes, that's Kowhai, all those things, and the added bliss of you naked in the sun. You're on top of the world here, levelled grass areas for parking and lazing or games, delightful little bush shaded arbours and corners, and all the while, down through broad bushed valleys fanning out to flatter farmlands below, the blue of the Tasman rolling endlessly in to a ribbon strip of sand. (If your eyes are good, you can pick out people-ants moving so slowly along that distant beach.)

If you're energetic and agile, the bushed slopes and valleys dropping away from the top plateau are wonderful to clamber in and explore and really get to feel primeval in, but I'd advise that you keep to the tracks and rope lines - you could get lost. There's a cottage-like club house - no shop - and if that far off sea should prove too tantalising, there's a well maintained pool and sauna. (Kowhai members pride themselves on being a hardy breed, with a record of mid-winter's day swimming in their pool, but with a sauna to follow, they manage to survive.)

Do make a point of visiting Kowhai if you're around Auckland way, but choose a windless day - breezes can really funnel up those valleys. However, don't let that put you off; Kowhai's renowned for hospitality. They're a hardworking bunch too - their efforts to boost club funds through the sale of ponga logs really deserve support and admiration. And if you're not already a member of a club, you should certainly have a trial visit to Kowhai; it's a vigorous club, with a lot to offer.

NATIONAL NUDIST RESORT

Shareholders and interested people, following the advertised meeting, met at Taupo on the 10th September and proceeded to the recommended site for our Hot Springs Complex in ideal weather conditions. The site was viewed by way of a boat trip on the lake. The lake frontage showed great possibilities for beach and boat marina facilities and though not all actually setting foot on the land itself we were able to assess its possibilities by adjoining properties. No great difficulties were envisaged in clearing the land, which is mainly low scrub and secondary growth of native trees. The appropriate local authority has been approached and has indicated they would view access from the main road favourably; this, incidentally, would involve the formation of roading of approximately 800 metres over easy country. There is availability of thermal hot water on the property and on checking with the Geothermal Authority we have been assured of access to this facility.

After viewing the proposed site a meeting of shareholders and interested parties was held the following day (Sunday 11th September) at De Bretts Hotel Taupo and by a majority vote of approximately 90% it was agreed that a trust be formed that day and wheels set in motion to purchase the property and immediate steps taken to effect this. The area of land under negotiation being 20 acres (more or less) is to be purchased at a price of $1000.00 per acre plus service fee.

We are approaching the vendor with a view of purchasing at a later date an additional 10 acres (approx.) as and when the complex is developed to its fullest. A vote of thanks was proposed by Doreen James (Taranaki) to the Steering Committee for their untiring efforts in viewing prospective sites. A vote of thanks was also proposed by Mrs John Miller (Hawkes Bay) to Mr Ron Ball, an independent chairman, for conducting the meeting. Both proposals were carried with acclamation.

Because of tax savings and other incentives it was decided almost unanimously that the complex should proceed under a Trusteeship rather than as a private company. This will facilitate the payment of an interest (by way of cash or discountable holidays) as and when the complex moves on to a profitable basis, though even in the early stages as the complex is being developed, shareholders could expect camping facilities at a reduced rate.

An overall development concept is to be formulated to obtain the maximum benefit from the property while at the same time preserving the natural environment that already exists, copies of this will be distributed to shareholders and clubs in due course. The Trustees would appreciate any ideas on what a shareholder or prospective shareholder would expect of such a complex. Any suggestions should be forwarded to the box number below.

At present we are approximately half way to the purchase price of the property. However although we have a tentative acceptance of the terms deal it is imperative that the balance is forthcoming. We cannot emphasise strongly enough now this project is off the ground that further funds for initial development are imperative so that we may enjoy its facilities at the earliest moment.

REMEMBER! this is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to join in a venture that will not only provide you, the shareholders with a personal stake in a valuable asset, but also a complex that will be of benefit to Nudism as a whole.

Your appointed Trustees are:-

Allen Miller

PHOTOGRAPHING THE NUDE

by JOHN BYRNE

PART TWO: LIGHTING

Photography is defined as 'drawing with light' and lighting know-how is therefore the most important of all the photographer's tools. The amateur photographer must master the complicated relationship between form and light, for lighting can either create or destroy the mood or atmosphere of the naturist picture.

STUDIO LIGHTING

The major advantage of studio photography is that the photographer has absolute control over lighting. Although there is a wide variety of different lighting equipment available, the amateur should begin with a basic lighting arrangement. After a little experimentation, he will discover variations to suit the effects he particularly wants. The following sketches are intended as guides from which to begin:

Wellington clubhouse - under construction   Wellington clubhouse - under construction

THE CLASSIC 'THREE-QUARTER' LIGHTING

MAIN (MODELLING) LIGHT WITH SECONDARY LIGHT ON LEFT

The main (or modelling) light, as illustrated on the first sketch, will produce deep black shadows. You may diffuse this 'hard light' by placing tracing paper or similar material in front of the bulb, or by 'bouncing' the light into a white umbrella or off a sheet of white cardboard. Diffused or reflected ('bounced) light results in 'soft' lighting with more natural skin tones.

Bounced light is the next best thing to natural light. It will be necessary to adjust your f-stops accordingly, since this bounced light is only about a quarter as strong as that of a straight light.

A secondary light, as illustrated on the second sketch, can be used for an even, shadowless picture. To further accentuate light and shade, one light may be moved either closer to, or further away from, your model.

A background light can be used to illuminate the area behind the model, as well as separating her from the background, thereby creating a more in-depth picture.

Other lights can also be used to highlight hair and other features.

When using electronic flash, a 'slave unit' which automatically triggers several flash units simultaneously may be purchased. It takes considerable experience to gauge the effect produced by the flash light. With other lighting systems one can move the lights about until one can actually see the required effect.

WINDOW LIGHT

If there is good natural light at home - use it. Position your model to one side of a window and have your camera between the girl and the window for soft, even lighting results. DO NOT place your model in front of the window - for you will end up with a silhouette photograph.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

The cheapest and most available light source is the sun. On bright, clear days, DO NOT have the sun at your back when taking photos of your model. Direct sunlight acts as a bright, fixed spotlight causing deep shadows and making eyes squint.

Use the sun as a sidelight. This can create dramatic effects but take care that the darker side of the body is not under-exposed. Allow a stop or two for that darkness. If shadows get too dark, brighten them with a reflector (a white cloth, for example) or fill-in flash.

A bright, overcast day is ideal for outdoor shooting. Light in this condition is soft and diffused.

Photograph the model against the sun. However, avoid getting the sun directly into the lens of the camera. Use a lens hood or get someone to hold a piece of cardboard so that it will cast a shadow over the lens. Ensure the cardboard doesn't show in the picture. Many people think than photos taken in the shade will be flat and without contrast. In fact, you can capture a wide range of tones in these conditions. Try it!

FREE BEACHES REPORT by EMIEL ROLAND

The New Summer Season has started again and some of us have already had our first taste of salt water. Many have asked me if the refusal of the A.R.A. to grant us a free beach means that we cannot have our outings to Free Beaches anymore? The answer is: Of course we can. The A.R.A. considers that the law has not been sufficiently clarified yet. We think the Supreme Court decision, Police v Rogers (unreported A. 873/75 Auckland Registry) is sufficient guarantee for the freedom of our beach activities. We know these circumstances; away from crowed beaches, sign posting, and notifying the authorities. If we maintain a sensible approach then there should be no hindrance to our Free Beach activities this summer.

I heard the other day of a case in the Magistrates Court in Auckland concerning a courageous surfy who wanted some exercise in his sport. One winter morning he decided to go to the beach. He parked his car on the road along the beachfront together with a few other cars parked there. He changed into his wet suit and enjoyed himself in the waves with his surf board.

Three weeks later he received a summons from the Police to appear before the Magistrate's Court on a charge of indecent behaviour. Apparently a middle aged couple had been watching him while he changed into his wet suit and had seen some bare flesh! The Magistrate took little time in dismissing the complaint.

Keep sunning.

SPORT ON THE SUN CLUB SCENE

Ever since the first N.Z.S.A. Rally I attended at Wellington in 1962/63 there has been controversy in one way or another over the sports programme. I remember when we were all just learning the game of volleyball, how we argued about different interpretations of the rules, and I was quite often seen battling a point out verbally with the late Arthur Congdon of Canterbury long after the battle on the court had ended!

Though there was often more heat generated in argument than nature provided, it was usually in a friendly spirit and, indeed, it gives me some pleasure now to recall many happy days in the past. It was soon realised that what was needed was some sort of standardisation in the running of National Rally sport. We had meetings during each rally and agreement was reached on most aspects, but then another year would go by, new personnel would appear on the scene, new sports and trophies were introduced, and stories of dissatisfaction filtered back to clubs from the Rally venue each year.

So things drifted on and we got no nearer to solving our various problems. Most of the trouble experienced resulted from nothing being written down - it was all in our heads - and my experience is that once rules are written, whether you agree with all of them or not, they are there and everybody knows where they stand.

I have always maintained that the difficulty with nudist sport is that we are all first of all nudists, and secondly we are sports players. This means really that sport in the sun clubs is more of a recreation and the problem is that you will always find those that like to play hard and seriously - and why not? How to mould these two groups into one happy "family" is one of the problems.

What is the answer? I think it can be solved in the same way that many disagreements are solved - and I don't wish to sound trite - but it is simply "give and take", a realisation that there are these two viewpoints and that both sides are there basically to enjoy the freedom of playing sport in the nude with their friends and families.

Is there too much emphasis on sport at the Rally? I don't think so, but I know many would disagree. What I do feel is that more should be done for the non-sports players at the Rally (or in the clubs for that matter), so that they do not feel that there is a preoccupation with sport. If sport was curtailed, some other activity would have to be provided otherwise there would be little inducement for people to travel long distances to attend.

Over-emphasis?

The next question is this: is there too much sport at the Rally? Note the slight difference. I would have to answer this with an unwilling "yes, it's getting that way". The problem here is threefold and is simply summed up as lack of time/unpredictable weather/indifferent organisation. The last mentioned I hope will be solved to some extent by this Sports Organiser's Handbook; the other two are not so easy.

The Rally can be made longer again - 6 days - but this does not suit those who have to return to work, nor those who wish to continue their travels elsewhere in limited time. And I have always been of the opinion that when a hole is dug someone will always come along and fill it up! An extra day would soon be taken up by further sports rather than as an overflow for what is already on the programme. Therefore, much serious thought must be given before introducing any new sport from now on.

This brings us to the vexed question of restriction of entries. Let me say straight away that I am against any restriction because I believe that rather than restrict, we should encourage people to participate. Restriction is negative, participation is positive. We all want to be part of and to enjoy the Rally in our own way and it seems to me that to say "NO" to anyone is a form of dictatorship which we should do our best to avoid, or at least to keep down to the very lowest level.

It is very difficult to pronounce loftily an arbitrary figure over which entries cannot be accepted. There are many factors which must be considered: the facilities at the particular venue (one, two, three, or maybe four miniten courts, for example); the number of visitors from other clubs (this varies from year to year and I don't think anyone who has travelled hundreds of miles should be told they cannot compete), and the amount of time intended by the particular organising committee to devote to any one sport. For instance, it might be considered necessary by the Sports Organiser in Auckland to play miniten from 6 am. to 6 p.m. every day, while in Wellington I would only need to use the afternoons.

Answer

Here, of course, we have come to what could be called the "nitty gritty", and I believe it may be the answer to all the foregoing questions regarding "too much emphasis", "too much sport", etc., etc., that have been bandied about in recent years. It is simply this:

There are too many people trying to play too many sports in the too little time that is available.

That's it in the proverbial nutshell!

It is a matter of education. Some people will just have to learn and accept that they cannot be in two places at the same time. The only way to teach them this is to be strict and firm on the question of defaulting players who are involved elsewhere when they are needed. The lesson would soon be learned.

There would be those who would inevitably protest at this measure and would consider that it was a dictatorial restriction of their personal enjoyment, and I suppose they would have a point. But it could be said equally that these same people were restricting the complete enjoyment of others by cluttering up the programme with entries in every sport knowing that it would be impossible, should they progress far in the competition, for them to fulfil their obligation to the Sports Organiser and their opponents by being on time for each sport entered.

To sum up then: it seems to me that there are two major points that should be noted, both of which if adopted would go a long way to make the Rally an enjoyable experience for all - not just the players.

1. Each host club must be sure of the number of entrants from its own club that it can cope with (especially in a time consuming sport such as miniten) and, if necessary, be prepared to hold special competitions prior to the rally in order to keep their own entries down to a manageable level.

2. The players themselves must play their part by thinking carefully before entering too many competitions.

These are the two crucial factors, and if only I could add a third:

3. The weather must always remain fine and warm throughout the five days of the Rally!

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

While glancing through a recent copy of this magazine, 70 year old Mother Andrews said, "But they're all young and beautiful." Subsequent checking showed that of eighteen photographs, ten were of unaccompanied, naked young women. Such an editorial policy will guarantee increased magazine sales but will deter rather than encourage family groups, which are the mainstay of our movement.

Stew and Joy Andrews, S.A.N.C.

While it may be true that the ratio of young women who grace our pages is rather higher than that encountered in nudist clubs, we do not agree that this should deter family groups, either from joining clubs or buying the magazine. Our young ladies, almost all of whom are members of New Zealand clubs themselves, are not presented in a sensationalist or exploitational way in this magazine, and to restrict their appearance in 'N.Z. Naturist' would be a victory, we believe, for those who question the propriety of the nudist movement.

Editor

Dear Sir,

Your magazine is excellent, but to me there are two ways it could be improved.

First, pictures could be much more interesting with captions, such as a photograph published a few issues back showed a group with trophies they had won. To me, this illustration was downright mysterious! I'm sure captions could be devised without breaking any confidences; some people may not mind their first names or even their full names being printed, and many photos would be considerably more interesting even if only with the addition of a by-line telling the name of the beach or club or whatever location where the photo was taken.

Second, it's very noticeable that women far outnumber men in the pictures. I've shown the magazine to men, who seem to take it for granted that this should be so, but women always comment on this. People no longer buy our magazine for titillation, now that much stronger stuff is so readily available, and in any case, surely the message of 'Naturist' is that nakedness need not be a sexual thing. If this is the case, male bodies should be just as aesthetically appealing as female ones, hence our male friends in the movement must be just as worthy to feature in the magazine as the ladies. Has a male ever featured (alone) on the front cover, as a centre-fold or anywhere, unaccompanied by a female, and riot doing something like chopping wood or playing volleyball? We occasionally see charming studies of overweight women and older women - how about some tubby grandfathers?

Eastern Nudist

Come on, you tubby grandfathers! We can only print them if you send them in.

Editor

Dear Sir,

I have been an avid reader of your fine magazine for many years now, and always search the pages eagerly for "true nude" photos.

My wife and I, with our family and quite a large circle of friends are practising nudists but feel we must restrict our activities to private, non-club outings as it appears that members of your affiliated clubs are only partial nudists in that they retain their pubic hair.

My friends and I bare all; we would like to know if this practice is accepted in your clubs as we all wish to become members. We consider the removal of pubic hair is necessary for cleanliness and neat appearance as is the now accepted shaving of men's beards and ladies' underarms.

We do not practise this shaving for any ulterior or "kinky" reason, but know it is essential for comfort, cleanliness and appearance.

I am sure you would be pleased and surprised at the favourable reception you would receive if you published photos of any of group or of people similarly disposed. To this end, I hope some of the enclosed photos may meet your high standard of printing requirements.

I hope, if your reply is favourable that we may meet soon in person and perhaps discuss this matter further.

Yours faithfully,

S. Peech

Dear Con,

Attached please find this club's contribution for the December edition of the New Zealand Naturist.

We would also like to compliment you on the September edition which was put on sale in Canberra today. I think it is the best presented edition so far and the quality throughout is great. I am pleased that support for the magazine is obviously growing. Long may it continue to flourish.

We in the A.C.T. Club consider it the only nudist magazine worth buying.

You may be interested to know that our campaign to have the magazine moved out of the 'Restricted Publications' sections of newsagents' displays has some measure of success, at least it is now displayed on 'the fringe'. We are persevering and trying all we can to gain general public acceptance for the whole nudist movement.

Once again, congratulations and keep up the good work,

Yours in nudism,
Rick Venning

Fine, Rick. Thanks for the efforts on our behalf.

Editor

Dear Sir,

Thanks for the excellent quality and presentation of issue 84; it seems even better than ever, if that's possible.

I thoroughly enjoyed the article about photography by John Byrne, and look forward to reading further articles in his series. Also, I especially enjoyed the photo of the lady in the 'Survivor' T-shirt - it said so many things!

Keep up the good work.

Henry B.

Dear Sir,

In his article (issue 84) Ron of A.O.H.C. may feel that a section of society does not want to understand social nudity so blindly buries its head in the Bible in the hope that it may here find some guidance. I feel, after reading Ron's and other similar articles, that nudists are further away from understanding the Christian way than the Christian the nudist. Even less will be understood while we shoot Bible texts around like bullets.

Christians are justified in being cautious on this issue. The reference to the nude bather in second Samuel 11 tells of a normal custom in the open air on the roof garden of the east. The events that follow highlight the dangers inherent in human nature. To see the return to the state of Adam and Eve in naked bliss before the fall as a sign of maturity while ignoring the reason for their guilt and the shame which is in us all is naive and blind to the realities of human nature. Sun clubs surely acknowledge this when they welcome family groups and single women but exclude single men. Why? Is is the fear of not being able to maintain a discipline code stricter than the people they ostracise?

Christian motivation for purity, honesty and openness starts in the mind and heart where the faith takes hold, not when clothes are divested. Freedom is not when I escape socially, but when I am free within. Then I am free to go nude in the sun with clear motives, but not to rob others of their right to choose a different life style.

But who said nudity was a sin? Only the misinformed, so why tilt at windmills. The question should be, "Nude - right or wrong for me?" (Romans 14:14). This is a social question, not a moral decision. We are all aware of social changes. Once it was indelicate to show even an ankle. The bikini in Victoria's reign would have been beyond all belief, but those days have passed - the day of swimming trunks will also pass. The rate of social change is accelerating all the time, what once took a generation to change now takes only a year or so.

But don't confuse social customs with basic morality. Morality is an unchanging standard at least as old as the ten commandments. Morals within social customs must still be there (Romans 13:9) even amid the state of flux society is always in. Within each society there are the rights and wrongs of etiquette and behaviour; these vary from culture to culture, they change with time. In our society a cultural revolution is continuing on the beaches as even more people completely discard body covering to enjoy sea and sun and the pendulum of social acceptance swings making it right for more and more people to frolic nude. Legislation will be the last to change, but the changes that Emiel Roland has sought to pioneer on our behalf must surely emerge as a rubber stamp.

Be glad to say it is happening. (Isaiah 20:2).

Suntan Everywhere

We referred your letter to Ron. He agrees that only the misinformed say nudity is a sin, and that that was the message of his article. He also says he knows of no clubs that exclude or ostracise single men; if a limit is placed on the number of single men members it is certainly not through fear.

Editor

Dear Sir,

I write this letter with a view to obtaining the support of New Zealand club members in developing a closer association between Australian and New Zealand clubs. As a member of Tindo I believe that any interaction between members of clubs must be of benefit to those members, to clubs, and to the naturist movement as a whole. I have many varied thought on the possible ways in which my ideas can be expanded and list but a few here for further consideration.

Initially perhaps normal correspondence between club members with exchanges of views, ideas and photographs of clubs, etc. - in a sense a form of 'pen-pal' relationship could develop. However, as the correspondence movement expands I believe that we can expect to see holiday exchanges between members themselves followed closely by club holidays and sporting exchanges across the Tasman. With group airfare discounts and accommodation at club grounds or members' homes costs would probably not be prohibitive. Of course, the success of these ideas will depend on the interest and co-operation of members themselves and I will be pleased to receive further ideas and comment from members interested in participating.

Please write me care of undo or direct to the address below.

Publicity Officer Tindo,

Dear Sir,

Congratulations to Colin B. of Wellington for his excellent work in producing a Sports Manual. This much needed volume will be of great assistance to the sportsmen and women in the movement for both layout of events and rules.

Hopefully, regional differences in rule interpretations will now be a thing of the past.

Knowing Colin and his wife Heather to be keen sports fans I am sure compiling the rule book was a labour of love yet the colossal amount of work involved would have daunted many a lesser person.

On behalf of all the sports-minded at A.O.H.C. I would like to thank Colin for all the time and effort he has put into this project.

Barry Stacey.
A.O.H.C.

Dear Sir,

My wife and I have recently moved back to Tasmania, to take up residence again on our property "Inasmuch", which has several acres turned over to nudists - "The Inasmuch Country Club". Of course, our club is small, we haven't a great deal of equipment or facilities, but we do have a very beautiful small valley secluded from view of three sides and fenced on the road side, with creeks, trees, ferns, grassy areas, hills, slopes, waterfalls and so on - a real little Garden of Eden. Our membership is small, although one day, when we are more organised with buildings and such, we envisage increasing club membership; at this stage, the small membership is ideal for what amenities we do have.

The local townsfolk, who are within two miles of us, know of the club, and we have an open, honest and friendly relationship, with no problems or troubles from them - as they themselves say, "To each his own".

We are considering the formation of an Associate Membership, along with the Club Membership. This will allow non-nudists the chance of joining with us on our functions and social evenings, without actually having use of our grounds. We are anticipating, however, that this will eventually gain us extra members, whilst at the same time will show that there is no actual difference nudists and non-nudists when it comes such social activities. We shall not know for some time after commencement of the Associate Membership scheme just how successful it will be.

However, we are going to start the scheme and see how it goes; if successful, the possibilities are many, and would help considerably in the development of club amenities and facilities. The scheme would entail many functions with all people clothed, but in our usual inclement Tasmanian weather that is often the case, anyway!

However, we should know how things are going to work out next year, and I shall keep you informed.

Graeme J. Sanders,
Owner/Manager,
Inasmuch Country Club.

A most interesting letter, Graeme. Your grounds sound delightful, and the whole concept is most intriguing. Certainly tell us more; we wait to hear from you.

Editor

Dear Sir,

In the September issue of this very fine publication I read with interest Mr Gilmour's congratulatory letter to the S.A.N.C. on being the first club to change the adjective to Nudist. It cannot pass without reminding him that from the very start NUDIST YOUTH CLUB has been registered with that name. He should also be reminded that they were accepted as a member club to the then Association at the meeting when he held the position of Editor of this magazine and had he and his Business Manager not taken up 4 of the 7 hours of the meeting his memory may well be clearer.

Yours etc.
I. Eastern

NEW ZEALAND
CLUB NEWS

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

No we're not missing, we are still here in the Bay, actually we've been so busy over the last few months that we missed our little say in the September issue. However a lot has been achieved in and around the Club in preparation for this summer, with perhaps the biggest single effort being the fact that our "Blue Loo" is now only part of the Clubs history, a tradition that we were only to glad to swap for the new white porcelain affairs we now have. Yes, we've got our new toilet and kitchen block in operation; we have also done a lot of work to upgrade the volleyball and miniten courts as well as other facilities at the grounds.

Our biggest public relations exercise of the year was centred around our Cabaret in September supported by a series of articles in many newspapers in the area. This week of publicity has brought in a number of new units. As for our cabaret this was our greatest and encouraged from the bookings we have received already, we've booked the same facilities for the 30th September, 1978.

For those of you who'll be travelling around this summer, why not come and stay with us at the grounds, we can't offer you electricity, but we can give you an area of peace and tranquility, the game courts, long bush walks and a cold stream to swim in; the beach is not far away either. We would love to have you along, but if you can, please let us know you're coming so that we can arrange to have the gate and clubhouse open.

Please note our new address is P.O. Box 476, WHAKATANE.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

Sorry we missed the last issue; a mix up of duties meant nobody got onto doing our news bulletin. (To the thousands of readers who looked for our news, we apologise.) For a start, we must tell you that our club has won the Mowlem trophy for the greatest increase in membership of any club in the country. If present indications are anything to go by, we're well in the running to do the same next year. (Even our President got into the spirit of things and produced a new baby girl member in July. In that alone, we think we've got many of the other national Club Presidents beaten! Is this a New Zealand first?)

We have just purchased a club house and a hydraulic water pump, so by summer we should have a water supply to the house and the pool. However, we still have not managed to negotiate a long term lease on our present grounds and are still trying to get something more permanent. It's frustrating to think we're held up over a trifling thirty thousand dollars. Does anyone have any spare dollars, please?

We do wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Hot New Year, and we do hope that you'll make time to come and visit us during this summer.

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB INC.

We seem to have been having a very busy time in our club recently. First was our highly successful Cabaret in September. We have had many favourable comments from members of the public who were there.

We didn't quite see the dawn in at the President's place - it was the fellow nudists visiting from other clubs who were the stayers!

We had a well attended and successful A.G.M. A keen new committee was elected with the balance of members on the female side.

Last weekend we had a stand in a local Recreation and commercial show call "Leisurama 77" This was our biggest public relations venture to date, and the stand was enthusiastically manned by many of our members over the 4 days that it was on. It received many favourable comments from the general public and we are following this up with our first OPEN WEEKEND for this summer, next weekend. We are well on the way to our aim of having our club accepted with any other sport and recreation club in the district.

This week one of our members won a national competition on conservation. On the top of her list was "Be a nudist over summer so that there won't be so much washing." In a live telephone interview over national commercial radio she was asked if she practised same - she answered that she did and gave a plug for nudism in general and our Open Weekend in particular.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

Not a great deal to report from Oranui, although we are pleased with the way some of our projects, long talked about, have come to fruition during the past few months. We have just about completed the extensions to the sundeck by the pool, giving us more than twice the terrace area we had before. There's a fine storeroom beneath the deck, and while this won't mean much to many club members, it will make the storage of bulky equipment much easier and more secure. We're well on the way to repainting the club house after the visits by the Phantom Painter and it'll be a relief to be rid of the last reminders of that unhappy episode.

By the time these notes are published, we'll have had our first event of this summer season, the Fun Miniten Competition followed by the usual Labour Day weekend social in the clubhouse. November 5th will have come and gone, with our barbecue and skate board competitions on that fine new track which we opened last year. And by then, hopefully, we'll be swinging into summer, with the winter well behind us and the Oranui sun will be beaming forth on us all.

I can't close these notes without mentioning that John and Gillian; our care-taking couple, the terrors of the miniten courts, the vanquishers of the Phantom Painter, are no longer serving the club as caretakers. Thanks from us all, John and Gill; you looked after us well. And welcome to Jim and Lynette - may the grass grow green but not too long for you!

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB, INC.

Guy Fawkes came and went - once again a most successful evening for all members and visitors alike. Like all other clubs we've had both kids' and adults' Christmas parties with all the cheer that seems to spring from nowhere at this time of the year.

But that weekend when .Waikato, Auckland Sun and N.Y.C. visited us had to beat the lot. Inter-club visits seem to do something for a club and should be encouraged We hope next to have A.O.H.C., N.S.N.C. and K.V.C. early in the New Year. And what a help Colin Brown's Official Sports Handbook is when organising even a small sports day. A first class production. Many thanks, Colin.

Congratulations also to North Shore Nudist Club Inc. It didn't surprise us to hear that this young progressive club was next to call themselves a 'Nudist Club'. Who's next?

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC.

It was drawn to my attention recently that in Annapolis (Maryland) nudists not only sport a better suntan than their more conservative contemporaries, but can also boast a lower incidence of High Blood Pressure. This is said to be due to their lack of "inner pressures" and feeling of total freedom. Perhaps our club subscriptions are saving our doctor's fees?

Wellington's winter was the wettest for many years, (no surprise for some of you). However, Club saunas, socials, working bees and even an "Old Time Music Hall" evening have kept our spirits out of the mud and with the improvements to our grounds we are hopeful of a season of 1st class sunbathing and social activity.

Visitors from other clubs are of course welcome to call in and spend some time with us. Our grounds are now completely secured with a locked gate, so should you decide to call on us, keys are available from our secretary, Les., Phone Wn 660-443. If you are not already a member of our happy throng, please feel free to contact us at the addresses listed in the Club Directory.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our friends and fellow-nudists the very best for 1978 with lots of sunshine and happy sunbathing.

Remember, if "Big Yeller" is seen in the skies, do not be alarmed, it occasionally happens in Wellington!

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB, INC.

Everyone complained about the late start to the summer of 77. Nudists, who are committed sun- worshippers in the main, had more reason than most, for it seemed as though their god had deserted them. But if ASC members were impatient for swimming and sunbathing weather to begin, they did not let that dampen their club spirit. Working bees on the grounds tidied the verges of lawn, volley-ball court and children's play area and the new clubhouse, which is now built up to ground floor level, had a temporary roof constructed to cover the basement and so make it a habitable place for toilets, ablutions and club activities.

The popular film evenings continued, and a sports day visit to the attractive South Auckland Nudist Club was a November highlight. But the spring of 77 will go down 'in the club annals as a season when the sun seemed to be a long time a-coming.

NUDIST YOUTH CLUB, INC.

This will be the last Youth Organisers Report as the position will become obsolete with the new

N.Z.N.F. Constitution. Youth will now be represented by the N.Y.C. delegate. Consequently I think it will be to the benefit of the movement if N.Y.C. Branches were formed in every Club. Only then can N.Y.C. truly represent the views of youth in the movement. By becoming a Branch of N.Y.C. youth groups will have the assistance of existing Branches. To help in their formation, inter-club activities can then be organised. Flexibility in the N.Y.C. Constitution will always allow Branches to retain their own identity.

Teenagers tend to be group-orientated and unless there is provision within Chi.bs for them to get- together, they will drift away to groups outside the movement. This must be prevented because today's youth is the movement's future. The N.Z.N.F. and N.Y.C. Rallies are the highlight of the N.Y.C. year. By participating in these events, young people maintain a continued interest in N.Y.C. and through N.Y.C. the nudist movement. This year's N.Y.C. Rally will be held in New Plymouth at the Taranaki Club and I hope parents will encourage their teenagers to attend.

CHRISTCHURCH NATURIST CLUB, INC.

We have just had our Annual General Meeting and by the time this appears in print we will be two years old and our new committee will have settled in properly. This last year quite a lot has been accomplished on our 35 acre plot but we hope to surpass this in the forthcoming twelve months.

We now have water available on our grounds, at a not inconsiderable expense. In fact, to have sunk an oil well could not have cost much more. Our well- sinker, after a delay of some six months owing to bad weather and mechanical break-downs, found it necessary to sink a six inch bore to a depth of over eighty feet to get an adequate supply of water. We are using a good old-fashioned wind-mill to pump from this new well. At least the wind costs us nothing and there seems to be no shortage of it.

We already had an old three inch well on the property which had been sealed because of pollution. This well has been re-opened and pumped out and the water proved to be pure and clear, so by using a small petrol-driven pump on this well we will have an excellent emergency water supply. During the next few weeks we hope to erect a couple of water tanks and lay several hundred feet of pipe with taps here and there. It will certainly make the grounds a lot more habitable during the summer months. We have a copper and plenty of firewood which will just have to suffice for a hot water service meantime.

A tremendous amount of clearing up has been carried out on the grounds especially under the big pine trees, opening up walk-ways between the various clearings. We have also planted more trees, both pines and poplars, as well as several ornamental shrubs.

On the social scene we have been holding 'get togethers' at various member's homes and we hold a regular sauna evening twice each month at one of the city sauna lounges. Although the place is not reserved exclusively for club members, we usually seem to out-number the general public by about two to one. We have found that by making ourselves known to any outsiders who might be attending we have aroused much interest in our club and have even gained a few new members from this source.

Our membership has been growing slowly but steadily all through the long winter months and we now have no doubt about our future. We must admit that these first two years have been quite a struggle but things are really looking rosy now and we are keenly awaiting the long hot summer that is now about three years overdue.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY INC.

Hello. Yes, we are still in existence. Just went into hibernation during a winter which is best forgotten!

Activity at the club grounds has been minimal - so has fine weather. The power was disconnected for some time while several large trees, which were interfering with power lines, were felled and chopped up for firewood. The power was reconnected in October in preparation for a busy summer which should see the completion of our pool and a miniten court on the bottom level of the grounds.

Fortnightly saunas kept us in touch during the winter and there was a wine and cheese evening in October.

A good crowd attended the Bay of Plenty cabaret in Rotorua, had a marvellous time and are definitely going to be there again next year. Thank you, Bay of Plenty, for a great weekend.

Sadly, Lance, our 25 (pIus) year-old horse did not survive the winter. The children will miss their rides and we hope we will be able to find a replacement. Any offers?

WANGANUI SUN CLUB INC.

Much has happened since our last letter to the Magazine. Our Club is still very much alive despite the wet soggy winter. We have completed and painted the shell of our Club house, and are working on the drive. With a little bit of luck, this will be completed by Xmas, and caravans will be able to descend, although anyone wishing to stay, needs to be self supporting as we have no power connected as yet.

Few of our members hibernated this winter. Our Sauna and Swim (in the warm kiddies' pool) have been a great success! We have even had members from other clubs joining us. By the time this newsletter is printed we will have enjoyed a wonderful Guy Fawkes night and of course our kiddies' favourite - Christmas Party.

May we wish everyone the very best for Xmas and New Year.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB, INC.

The season we hopefully call summer is with us again - in fact, it's nearly half ever, but tiny Kowhai Valley is still hanging in there. The club grounds look great, there is a half deck around the swimming pool, and the bush and scrub clearing done during winter has paid dividends in the greater area now available for sunning.

During the coming Christmas holidays we have some members off to visit out of town clubs, and, if we can get over the mountains to Tolaga Bay, there'll be a good representation at the National Rally - we're looking forward to that; it should be a boomer!

No more writing for now; on with the summer! Enjoy yourselves.

OPEN DAY AT ORCHARD

Looking back briefly, ne event stands out clearly. On Sunday, 9th October, 1977 an open day for the general public was organised at The Orchard.

Old hat, you may well think, but a new departure for a southern club. Well advertised on radio and in the newspapers, and supported by a hot, cloudless spring day, the public responded in droves.

No vetting or questioning, just clearly advertised directions to find our property, and the response was between 200-300 interested, well behaved members of the general public. Although our initial idea had been to remain dressed and show people around, the beautiful day soon had us all undressed, and many of the visitors followed suit.

The inevitable result of course, a big boost in membership, a marvellous exercise in public relations, and a repeat performance planned for early February.

Other recent club activities have included a dinner and dance, sports day and barbeque, children's day, and regular sauna nights. We now look forward to meeting members of other clubs at either the N.Z.N.F. Rally at Gisborne, or the Southern Rally at Christchurch, so our members can further expand their horizons. See you there.

AUSTRALIAN
CLUB NEWS

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB, INC.

We set four main aims when we formed this club some 17 months ago. These were to foster nudism in the A.C.T. and surround areas; to affiliate with the Australian Nudist Federation; to obtain and develop a club site; and to upgrade the Kambah Free Beach. At the same time we wanted to form a club which would be a progressive and dynamic influence in the Australian nudist scene.

By the time this edition of the 'New Zealand Naturist' goes to print, we are hoping all of these aims will have been fulfilled. The first two aims have been achieved most successfully; the latest indications of our standing in the community have been requests from the Australian Broadcasting Commission to talk on a Community Affairs programme, and from the Australian National Library for copies of our Newsletters and Club literature for the Reference section of the library. Since the Club affiliated to the A.N.F. at the last convention, our membership has steadily increased in Canberra and surrounding areas as far as Dapto and Wagga Wagga.

The last two aims are the ones which have recently taken most of the Club's energy. We are at present negotiating with the Department of the Capital Territory for a club site and the improving of the Kambah Beach. We feel we have a good chance of success in both areas and look forward to being able to report success in the next edition.

At the A.G.M. in August, it was reported that our Club is now about 8th largest in the A.N.F. and that in the past year, the Club had held 102 organised social and nudist functions!

The re-election of President Rick Venning and Vice-president George Cook was cause for considerable pleasure, as these two men have worked so hard to ensure the club had a really solid foundation established within its first year. All executive positions were filled unopposed, but competition for committee positions was fierce and the choice was made even harder by the quality of the members standing. We are now assured of the vitality and vigour of the Club being maintained, as we have no shortage of eager helpers. The local paper requested and printed a good report of our A.G.M.

We have a large contingent heading across to Sunseekers for the Christmas convention. We'll be taking a movie with us to entertain other visitors; we think it's as good as our Eclipse film of last year!

Visitors to our Club are most welcome, and any nudists holidaying in the A.C.T. over the Christmas period can be assured of a friendly, active time if they contact us at P.O. Box 242, WODEN, A.C.T. 2606. Don't forget, Information Sheets about the Club and the Free Beach are distributed in the government Information Centres and the Tourist Bureau. We wish all nudists compliments of the season and look forward to a long, hot summer.

NATURI

May we, of Naturi, first wish the staff of the 'N.Z. Naturist' and all our valued Kiwi friends, a Holy and Happy Christmas. Naturi is going from strength to strength. Membership is growing, and it is good to see so many newcomers enjoying a way of life completely new to them. During our winter we have had a few misfortunes. Very heavy rain storms badly eroded our club roads, and only very recently, huge hailstones ruined our swimming pool-cutting huge holes in the vinyl liner. Temporary repairs are being made which will see us over the Christmas holiday period, when the pool will be in great demand. Then will come possible construction of a new pool. Plans are already under way, prices being obtained for various types and methods of building. Finance, as always, is a problem, but a very generous offer of a loan from our old friend John, could be a great help in this direction.

The bush is now bursting out in glorious colour, as the Boronia and Grevilleas blossom, making the club a most attractive sight. Lots of members turned out for the Six Hour weekend in early October, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Social activities are stirring-a club dinner at the Gosford Leagues Club, and, of course, our annual Christmas Club party at the grounds. Father Christmas (Len) has gone into training already. A recent advertising campaign in the Sunday press has resulted in lots of interested enquiries, and some new members, to whom we extend a very warm welcome. Recently we had visitors from California - the Wadman family - who enjoyed a day with us.

Work by many members has greatly improved the club. Shelter roofs have been built over some of the vans, a new tank for water at the club house, roadside gutters dug to drain away storm water, two mini-ten courts resurfaced, and the children's playground cleaned up. Plans are in hand to grass this area to prevent further weed growth. We look forward to a good 1978, and with our old members joining in with our newer members in one big happy family, we will advance the cause of social nudity in our club. Don't forget, Kiwis, when you come to Sydney, be sure to visit Naturi. You are most welcome.

THE THREE BEARS SUN & HEALTH CLUB

Over 150 members of the Three Bears enjoyed having 36 visitors from five other clubs on our interclub day. The weather was great and has been for months on end. The visitors were from Sunshine Families, Eureka, Garden of Eden, Sun Leisure and Kiata. It was good to see 4 of the clubs with a team or more competing in the miniten competition. The final was between Sunshine Families & The Three Bears, with The Bears taking the trophy. A Cake decorating competition was held, with 17 cakes being entered, 8 of them were entered by the children and the judges had a big job judging as all looked great. A beach umbrella & a banana lounger were the main prizes.

The ladies were kept busy preparing hot dogs, hamburgers, tea, coffee, ice-cream and drinks for sale.

To all those who participated and to all those who attended on the day we thank you one and all.

EUREKA SUN CLUB

At the time of writing, we have had the worst winter dry spell on record, and the club grounds are tinder dry, creating a very severe fire danger. The usual spring rains are also late this year. Everybody in southern Queensland is waiting desperately for good summer rain. Bush fires have ringed our heavily timbered block, but this black landscape will bloom again with the first good shower.

The club residence (and future clubhouse) "Erika House" is now complete and passed by the local council. The dwelling was built by our founding and honorary life member, Teg, with the help of club members and friends. We wish Teg many happy peaceful years here now that he has taken up residence permanently.

There was an application before the Beaudesert Shire Council for the establishment of a new club in our area at Logan Village. Our club made representations to the council in support of the project. The applicant, Colin, who arrived in Queensland this year from South Australia, is popular and well known in the movement. Best of luck Colin!

It was with regret that Eureka had to cancel its annual inter-club day this year. However, here's hoping we are back in the swing for 1978. We would have won the volley ball without doubt on our sideways sloping court, as visiting teams always seem to find the terrain too difficult to handle. (All our team have one short leg).

A new club has opened on the Sunshine Coast, called "The Valley of Eden". The postal address is:

M.S. 373, Landsborough. 4550 QLD.

The Eureka Swim Night is turning out one of the most popular events for nudists in Brisbane. We are now enjoying support from the people who used "Shangri La" before it was closed, as well as our visitors from other clubs and invited friends. The venue is an enclosed pool, right in the city.

Our new pump and underground piping system is working well. This was recently installed to replace our old Holden belt driven model which finally gave up the ghost.

Our conservationist approach to the grounds has prompted the members to install a solar hot water system for the showers. This is being supervised by Al, one of our new members, who has a way of getting things accomplished, without them costing the earth. Members don't seem too upset about not having to chop wood any more.

Neighbours have moved in and cleared on both sides of the club grounds, which has presented us with a short term problem, but screening is being erected as fast as possible to close the gaps. The situation is worsened by the drought, as much of our thick ground scrub has dropped its leaves. Our nw neighbours are quite happy about our activities, and we hope to cement a good relationship with them over the next year or so.

TINDO CLUB

With our Annual General Meeting, which was held on Sunday 7th August, being very well attended by members the new committee is looking forward to a successful and active new club year. Wayne was re-elected by members as President confirming the hard work which he did for all club functions etc. during the year. Werner Dorfl has become the Club Secretary this year while Bob and Everett were re-elected as Vice-President and Secretary respectively.

The first social function of the year proved to be an enormous success and every credit should go to Anne our hard working Social Portfolio holder. Once again she organised a five course 'Welcoming to the New Committee Dinner' which was attended by approximately 150 members in the Clubhouse. The dinner was followed by a dance for all age groups which lasted well into the following morning.

A special sub-committee has recently been appointed to investigate the possibility of Tindo again holding the Annual Club Convention in 1978/79. With our new 40' x 20' swimming pool and all weather concrete tennis court and soon to be enlarged miniten court we feel confident that we can provide the facilities to attract club members from all around Australia. The Committee are at present considering expanding our advertising campaign to attract new members from a wider area and cross- section of the community.

AUSTRALIAN FREE
BEACH NEWS

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB Inc.

Have you heard the news? The Kambah Free Beach is now the easiest free beach to get to in the whole of Australia. It is only 3 Kilometres from the suburbs and only a few yards from the car-park. After the ACT. Nudist Club met with the Tourism and Recreation Branch of the Department of the Capital Territory, the Kambah Free Area has been extended almost to the car-park. Previously it commenced one kilometre downstream.

I am proud of the fact that the responsible attitude this club has taken since the area was first declared has led to this achievement.

If the original proponents for a free area in the ACT. had had a little more foresight and a better knowledge of what a free beach should be; if they had given more thought about to whom it should be accessible; if they had been less concerned about the need for isolation, peeping toms and hiding behind "the big tin fence", we would not have had to spend the past year negotiating a fair deal for nudists in the ACT.

An isolated area is ideal while nude bathing is illegal, which was what the original area was, but if the authorities decide to legalise nude .bathing, then there is no longer a need to isolate that area. Nude swimmers are NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG WE ARE NO LONGER BREAKING THE LAW. If someone comes along and creates a nuisance or hassles a nude swimmer HE IS BREAKING THE LAW! This is a hard fact for many people to realise. Darwin realised this, and I think the fact that the declared free area is the one originally proposed by the Darwin Sun Club, shows that properly thought out submissions will be successful.

Our advice to other clubs going for free areas is to initially select a beach that is suitable. The opposition is the 'same regardless of what beach is chosen, so it is better to fight the one combined battle than to have to re-negotiate after a facility is already established. We said this before the free beach was declared at Kambah and have been saying it ever since.

Fortunately, we were successful.

My sincere thanks go to the past committee and the present committee who have all worked towards getting the authorities to realise the very real problems associated with Kambah.

For those not familiar with the area, the previous beach was extremely difficult to get to, especially for small children, the elderly and the handicapped, as it entailed a long walk and a clamber through a stretch of boulders. The beach was very small. No facilities were near the beach. The new area has much more suitable swimming areas for children, very easy access and facilities available to it. It is indeed a very beautiful 1000 metre free area.

My thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support in this.

Rick Venning.

INTRODUCING GEMINI PARK NUDIST CLUB? HOLIDAY FARM.

My family and I, members of Brindabella Sun Club, were invited to spend the weekend of 17/18 September at Gemini Park. Our hosts, Noel and Pauline, are endeavouring to establish Gemini Park as a nudist club/holiday farm on a 75 acre secluded section of their property.

The property is situated south of Tarcutta just off the Hume Highway with easy access to Wagga Wagga.

Amenities include quarters available for a minimal charge containing a bedroom, combined kitchen and billiard room, hot shower, laundry, toilet, sunbathing area nearby, also facilities for barbeques.

On the hill overlooking the homestead Noel is setting up sites for caravans and tents, this area is surrounded by trees and is grassed. Further back on a grassed slope Noel is considering whether to establish a small nine hole golf course, this would be a first for any Australian Nudist Club. Left of this area is situated a small dam for swimming and a barbeque.

Plans include a tennis and volley ball court and other amenities.

At present applications for membership of the club will be accepted from couples and families.

People intending to holiday at Gemini Park must be members of recognised nudist clubs and present current membership card upon arrival.

Gemini Park is the ideal place for children who have little contact with farm life, bobble calves, lambs, bird and animal life.

For further particulars please write to P.O. Box 529, Wagga Wagga, 2650.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Keith Wedd.

FINANCE - The Perennial Problem

A novel approach to the problem of supplementing club funds has been adopted by The Orchard Sun Club in Otago. Like most clubs, they found the surest way of raising money for development was by the running of raffles. And, also like most clubs, they found that the bulk of the work in selling tickets fell on the same few individuals who rapidly became heartily sick of doing all the work.

Many alternatives were considered, but met the fate of requiring too many participants, or not offering sufficient financial return. Finally, they adopted the idea of a "Combined Recreational Clubs' Raffle".

This involved quite an amount of work in obtaining lists of clubs in various towns throughout the whole of Otago and Southland, and then circularising various club secretaries to see if their club was interested in joining the scheme.

Hundreds of letters and phone calls later, the raffle was under way with 35 clubs plus The Orchard Sun Club, selling the tickets over a two month period.

The prize: A 15 day trip for two to Australia, visiting five cities, inclusive of all accommodation, and $600 spending money. Total value of prize - $2,000.00.

Participating clubs were from all fields - karate, netball, boating, rodeo, football, play centres, aero club, etc, etc, - the better to give variety and range of distribution. The advantage of these mostly small clubs was that The Orchard did all the organising, covered all expen.ses of printing tickets, and provided the substantial prize which would have been beyond all the clubs individually.

In return, the clubs retained 50 cents for every $1 ticket they sold, and returned the balance to the organisers.

The result - many letters of thanks from the participating clubs for the opportunity to supplement their own club funds, and $2,000 for The Orchard to put towards purchasing their property.

Not an easy raffle to organise, and requiring attention to all the details, but the groundwork is now laid for further, bigger, and better raffles next year, and helping further establish The Orchard Sun Club as an accepted member of the local community.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

News of international nudist doings for the past three months include a report of an alarming sign which is now posted on some Greek beaches: BE CAREFUL! NUDE BATHING CAN END IN PRISON.

Better news from Poland. After some time spent in the shadows of offical disapproval, nudism is now emerging as an organised activity in that country. The title of an article in a widely read family magazine recently was:

'Nude And in Good Mood'. And in the Soviet Union a free beach has been officially recognised on the Baltic Sea.

*     *    *

From March 1978 nude bathing will be legal on certain beaches in Portugal, states that country's Minister For Tourism. Remember the days when New Zealand used to be thought a world leader in enlightened legislation?

*     *    *

In the U.S.A. a nudist resort near San Bernaclino, scene of the Miss Nude U.S.A. contests, now has a membership of nearly 1,000. A Los Angeles travel agent is organizing nudist excursions down the Colarado on a raft, trips to Catalina Island on a catamaran and a nude cross-country ski trip. In New York, travel agents advertise visits to San Diego's Black's Beach, which attracts crowds of naked bathers of up to 36,000 on a fine day.

*     *    *

Nudists not only get more complete sun tans but seem to have lower blood pressure than people who wear clothes, according to the central Maryland chapter of the American Heart Association.

A spokesman for the association said tests performed on members of the Pine Trees nudist camp in Crownsville, Maryland, over the past two years showed that nudists had fewer cases of high blood pressure than the national average.

While the national average was 17 percent, the 1977 sampling found seven per cent of the 163 nudists tested had high blood pressure. In 1976, he said, two per cent of 150 nudists tested had high blood pressure.

One member of the association suggested that "the only reason we can think of is that members are less inhibited. They have a tendency to lower blood pressures because of a lack of inner pressures and a feeling of total freedom."

The official Sports Handbook of the N.Z,N.F. is now available. Written by Colin Brown of the Wellington Sun Club, this is a publication we thoroughly recommend. Clubs or individual members can obtain copies from the Federation Secretary. At a cost of only $1.50 a copy, this is a splendid buy.

The North Canterbury Catchment Board walked into trouble when it leased 14 hectares of land to the nudists of the Christchurch Naturist Club.

Right next door to the club was a youth camp run by the Church of the Nazarene, thus making it almost impossible (complained the church) to teach modesty and purity to children attending the church camp. The catchment board decided to let the church give up its lease on payment of $66 overdue rent.

OBITUARY

Des Pople A.O.H.C. 1963-77.

With the tragic, sudden passing of Des Pople at Labour weekend, A.O.H.C. has lost a very dear friend, as well as a man of exceptional qualities which endeared him as a valued member, not only to our club, but to the movement as a whole.

Several developed areas of our club grounds, as well as some of the roads stand as memorials to Des, whose efforts over the years with his earthmoving machinery made a large contribution to our development. Des brought his qualities of fairness, modesty, liberal thinking, and quiet efficiency to serve his club as treasurer for an all too short period, but his efforts added greatly to the tone and atmosphere of committee management.

A tremendously keen, hard hitting miniten player, Des won his clubs' doubles title in 1976 and the N.Z. Doubles title with Greg at Wellington in 1977.

Des was one of the hard core members of A.O.H.C. who was on the grounds every weekend of the winter and summer attending to his duties as well as entering fully into the social and sporting scene.

We mourn his passing while missing him dearly from our way of life.

Des is survived by his wife Lin, son Ian and daughter Louise.

Roger
President A.O.H.C.
