Yesterday & Tomorrow

This report was presented at the I.N.F. Congress 1996 held at the Athena Club in the Netherlands by Peter Mooseberger NZNF Secretary.

The Congress theme, "Yesterday and Tomorrow", is apt. Our nudist organisation has been addressing the challenges facing recreational groups as we move towards the 21st century. As nudists, we are compelled to see ourselves in the wider context of a rapidly changing society. We represent a unique life experience which is potentially attractive to many thousands of people in New Zealand. Our Federation believes that social nudism is moving into an exciting phase. Nudism is competing in a recreation market with a lot of options for people with money to spend. It remains a wonderful way to enjoy the great New Zealand outdoors in good company at a competitive price.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation is the national organisation in New Zealand representing the interests of incorporated societies, businesses and individuals who enjoy and promote the benefits of social nudity. Presently our Federation represents the interests of 23 "member clubs" comprising 19 established nudist clubs scattered throughout the country, one privately-operated clothes-optional holiday park (Mapua Leisure Park, near Nelson), a Supporter Membership Group, a Free Beach Group and a nudist vanning club (NZ NUDVAN Club). Of these affiliated clubs, all but four enjoy exclusive use of properties having a variety of surroundings and facilities. Many clubs have reported increases in membership and development of their club resources. Most produce regular newsletters of a good standard.

This country offers virtually unlimited opportunities for people to take off their clothes in beautiful, isolated places. We are fortunate here having a relatively isolated countryside, ample stretches of coastline, vast tracts of national parks, many beautiful waterways and a temperate climate conducive to year-round clothes-free recreation.

New Zealand is proud of its reputation worldwide of a clean, green and natural environment. It has become a premier destination for naturists from other lands owing to the huge range of recreational opportunities.

The 2000 INF cardholders in New Zealand represent a minority of New Zealanders who regularly or occasionally participate in social nudity. Club nudism has been organised in New Zealand for most of this century. Many attitudes have changed dramatically. Increasingly, New Zealanders are comfortable with the idea of public places where clothes- optional recreation is permitted. Club membership, once secretive and clandestine, is becoming more a mainstream activity. Many nudists here are honest and open about our unique form of recreation. Friends, family and workmates become used to nudism as just another form of social activity.

A national public relations logo has been developed, based on a "Go Natural" image. This logo lends itself to be easily integrated with clubs' names and other public relations details. It provides an alternative to various images which have a negative impact on the wider community (images including sun, idealised bodies and words with negative implications) and will be widely used in promotion of New Zealand naturism. The official Federation logo will be retained for use as the formal administration logo.

There is a very high awareness amongst New Zealanders of skin cancer. With New Zealand located near to the so-called "ozone hole", it has become a major topical issue here. People have been inundated with negative messages concerning exposure to the sun, to such an extent that for many there's an almost paranoiac fear. Obvious vested interest drives much of the hype. Our Federation is conducting a survey to determine the incidence of melanomas amongst club members. It will be interesting to know the susceptibility of nudists to skin cancers because this has a great bearing on our promotional efforts.

For a variety of reasons, nudists may well have a lower skin cancer health risk than the general population and we are hopeful our survey results will concur with this.

On the point of opening for business in the North Island is a modern privately-operated naturist park. In a number of respects, this enterprise is an exciting first for New Zealand. Called Katikati Naturist Park, it is a purpose-built resort developed by a family having a long-term commitment to nudism. It is well situated to prosper, servicing NZ's burgeoning tourist traffic. Presently, it is not affiliated to the national organisation.

The Federation has participated with clubs on several occasions in the past two years to represent nudism in the media. We have participated in talk-back radio, nude breakfast radio, articles in popular magazines and news features on national TV. These publicity opportunities usually showed nudists as ordinary people who happen not to wear clothes. It depends on the continuing involvement of club nudists willing to bring nudism into the homes of average New Zealanders. Over time, nudism is developing into another option in a range of mainstream leisure activities.

The Federation is monitoring developments in international nudist communication. A number of clubs and national organisations offer Internet Web/Home pages and e-mail communication. There is potential for our Federation and member clubs to participate more fully in this form of communication and we hope to go with the flow on the "information superhighway" in the near future.

We take this opportunity to thank the INF team for keeping our Federation so well informed of international matters. From New Zealand we extend our best naturist regards to participates of the Congress and wish you all a most interesting, productive and enriching experience at Club Athena - Ossendrecht.

MAGNETIC ISLAND HOLIDAY

Girl laughing

Recently I went on a holiday to Magnetic Island which is located off the coast of Townsville, far north Queensland.

It started when I responded to an advertisement in Australian Sun and Health, asking if young nudists would like to stay with the advertiser.

I drove from Brisbane on the weekend, staying overnight at Rockhampton, to be met at the Breakwater ferry terminal in Townsville and then travelled over to the island on the ferry.

The first thing that struck me was the size of the island, the number of amenities and the infrastructure. About 2500 permanent residents and approximately 2000 backpackers; mostly from Europe; live on Magnetic Island.

The second thing that struck me was their relaxed attitude towards public nudity. Most locals won't go nude in public but they don't have a problem with other people's nudity. My friend, whom I stayed with, said that none of his friends are nudists but they all know he is. They admire his all over tan. A lot even say they would like one. But, they can't bring up the courage to take their clothing off.

Nude bathing is illegal on Magnetic Island but the local police tolerate it in places where it has become common, except when a complaint is made and they have to react.

All they do is to tell the offenders a complaint has been made and ask them to either put their clothes on or to move on. There are three places where naturists can be commonly found; Rocky Bay, Balding Bay and the western end of Horseshoe Bay.

Rocky Bay is the most used of the three. I was told you can see up to 50 naturists at Rocky Bay on any day in August or September as this is the peak tourist season. My trip was in October so I only saw a few solitary naturists.

I was told that five teenagers, three boys and two girls, swam naked in Rocky Bay the day before I arrived. They were white all over so they were obviously not naturists. It is encouraging to know there are teenagers who are prepared to give naturism a go.

You can either sunbathe, swim in the ocean or you can go rock climbing. There are a lot of walking tracks as Magnetic Island is mostly national park.

On my first night on the island I went to Magnetic Beach Resort for a meal. While I was there they held a toad race for the kids. Krusty, local celebrity and race presenter, while introducing the contestants of the race found a toad that had lost its "costume". He made a joke of the situation saying this toad was found up at Rocky Bay, where some people, like this toad, swim without a costume.

"You, wouldn't do something like that, would you?" he added to no one in particular. I guess these situations illustrate the locals relaxed attitude towards public nudity. They all know it happens and are prepared to let it go on.

All in all I had a great time, but it was all over way too quickly. The locals are laid back and friendly and live life at a slower pace than we on the mainland (or the big island as some refer to it). I recommend Magnetic Island for anyone who would like a fairly relaxed, laid back holiday on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. It has a range of accommodation from hostels for budget conscious backpackers to four star resorts.

The best time to visit is in the winter months. It would probably be as warm as the New Zealand summer and the weather is most stable at this time of year. Magnetic Island boasts 300 sunny days per year. Avoid the island from November to about April as it gets too hot and the blue bottles make it impossible to swim on many of the beaches.

On my way back to Brisbane I stopped at a motel in Rockhampton. It was a hot day so I had a swim in their pool. It felt so strange to wear a swimming costume after spending a week swimming with nothing between me and the water.

Girl laughingKing of the Tiebreakers

by Eddie Kwok

Rally-goers at the national rally of the New Zealand Naturist Federation at Auckland were privileged to see a sporting achievement of "True Grit", "Top Gun" magnitude.

This came from a young man, Alan McPherson of Canterbury Sun Club and a member of Auckland Outdoor Health Club but who played for Canterbury.

Alan is a man whose competitiveness manifests itself not in a win-at- all-cost attitude but in a philosophy of give of your best, never give up and retain a basic commitment to sportsmanship.

His reward was the winning of the men's singles miniten, the mixed doubles miniten (with Kay Hannam), the men's table tennis, taking part in the final of the men's tenniquoit, draughts, men's doubles miniten and helping the Auckland Sun Club volleyball team to some respectability.

In terms of results, Alan's efforts were commendable but what of the John Wayne's true grit and Tom Cruise's top gun?

Sure, Wayne was a top American college grid iron star who probably had to be so to overcome his given name of "Marion" but like Cruise his movie exploits were make believe.

McPherson on the other hand displayed real courage to win the men's miniten title which was his from the previous rally in Wellington.

Playing against Grant of Auckland Outdoor, Alan was expected to win the final comfortably but was downed by the underdog 4-6 in the first set.

In the second, the writing was on the wall for McPherson when he was down 3-5. He was on the verge of exhaustion after being run around by Grant who was playing extremely well.

Twice McPherson did a "Pete Sampras" at the end of the court in a uncontrollable bout of vomiting. Even Grant pleaded with his opponent to "for goodness sake, take five minutes break" before resuming.

But the determined McPherson, took a sip of water, gargled and then continued to defend his title.

Slowly but surely, McPherson clawed his way back into contention. He held service, broke Grant's, saved a match point and forced a tiebreaker.

McPherson's athleticism had previously graced lower North Island clubs Manawatu and Wellington when he was stationed at Ohakea Air Base, while in the RNZAF, had his legion of supporters. Urged on and summoning up his last ounces of energy, he won a mini-break in the tiebreaker and was comfortably on the way to taking the second set. Grant had other ideas and forced the issue to 7-5 before conceding the set.

However, the advantage was still with Grant and he looked a winner without really dominating. The raw courage of McPherson again showed through as he forced another tiebreaker in the deciding set.

Grant took the early mini-break but Alan hung in and exchanged match points with Grant, who had two, before emerging as the winner 9-7.

Alan must surely be known also as the King of Tiebreakers as he had earlier won another with Kay to capture the mixed doubles title held by him and Christine Turner of Canterbury.

After the singles match, Alan had a couple of hours off before going on court to battle against Steven and Peter of Auckland Outdoor in the men's doubles.

All the courage in the world and support from partner Hugh could not make up for the physical drain which had by now reduced Alan to a player going through the motions.

As well, Alan had been playing the singles hampered by a leg injury which was only evident in the men's doubles when he wore a conspicuous bandage over his knee. His efforts on the volleyball court for the Auckland Sun "Stragglers" had also taken its toll on his energy. Aided and abetted by Ted Bennett a more than competent middle-aged volley-baller from the Sunseekers Club of Western Australia, McPherson showed what "setting" and "positioning" in volleyball was all about.

Alan has plans to again go overseas and if he does and stays away from the next rally, his personality and sporting prowess will be missed greatly.

Personal Experiences
at the INF Congress

- Peter Mooseberger

Armed with our Eurailpasses Penny and I had an early start at Paris taking several trains through French, Belgian and Dutch countryside to arrive at the town of Bergen op Zoom late in the afternoon on Thursday 22, August 1996. Having made an initial reconnoitre to the host club and district on my own seven weeks earlier, getting there was reasonably straightforward. A phone call to the club had us picked up and delivered to Athena in time for registration formalities and evening meal.

Pre-arranged accommodation was at the nearby small Dutch village of Ossendrecht. There, much of the small Hotel Dekkers had been reserved for delegates. The toilet and shower rooms were communal, and as it soon became obvious that that upper floor was occupied exclusively by naturists, the convenience of relaxed dress could be enjoyed when visiting these facilities.

Two buses on Friday morning ferried congress participants to the city of Antwerp for a mobile sightseeing tour. This was followed by the official reception at the fantastically ornate Antwerp city hall. Our group was received by an environmental officer of the city administration. Those of us used to more modest surroundings marvelled at the civic lavishness during the champagne toast, speeches and presentation. Perhaps I was not the only naturist present who conjured a scenario in which all of us were bare there!

The rest of the day in Antwerp was spent on foot wandering the inner city with our club guides, punctuated by a delicious pre-arranged restaurant lunch.

We enjoyed a brief re-acquaintance back at the club with Robbert Broekstra who toured New Zealand last summer.

It was a privilege to have Karl Dresden show us through his photographic exhibition set up in the main building basement. Several of the many display boards were devoted to material from New Zealand. Karl also has on display, and was taking orders for, his book History of Naturism, Chronicle of the INF. This is presently only available in German but eventually will be in other languages.

The host club is one of seven Belgian clubs operated by the Athena management based in Antwerp. This is the second time a world congress has been held there - the 10th INF Congress was hosted in 1966. The club grounds actually lie just over the border in Dutch territory - this to circumvent an old Belgian law which made it unlawful for children to see their parents naked. Vehicles are not normally permitted into the naturist grounds proper and have to be left in the wooded 500-lot car park adjoining. Gear is placed in sturdy hand carts garaged by the car park for easy wheeling around the camping and service areas. There are some 350 electricity-reticulated tent/caravan sites serviced by five modern ablution blocks. Among the usual sporting facilities are seven petanque pistes, eight badminton courts and five ping pong tables (in a large translucent semi-circular tent). The main club buildings are very modern and no expense seems to have been spared. Much use is made of brick and glass for low maintenance and warmth. A focal point is the large circular open air terrace with central barbecue and serving area.

An interesting feature in the grounds was a noticeboard carrying various meteorological instruments and weather forecast reports. Socialising, dining and administration took place at the main buildings near the entrance. Congress meetings took place in the permanent recreation tent normally housing indoor games, tucked in the woods some l00m away.

It was disappointing that delegates from Russia and other Eastern block countries apparently had last minute visa difficulties so could not attend.

The whole proceedings were interpreted into the official languages English, French and German by three interpreters sitting in individual transparent booths. The meeting was conducted over several working sessions during the Saturday and Sunday. Although Chairman and INF President Karl Dresden tried to maintain a good flowing pace, inevitably there were delays and lengthy discussion periods resulting in modified working periods. Participants mustered extra concentration to get through the business in time. I must admit that now and again in the heat of debate I found myself straining to hear the English interpreter through the sound system only to realise the current speaker was speaking in English and the interpreter was of course redundant!

A selection of matters discussed:

* It was confirmed that local membership cards carrying a valid INF stamp, name of issuing club, name of member and signature of member constitutes a valid INF passport. No photo is necessary; an ink signature links the person to the card.

* France took issue with part of the INF President's report which stated that free beaches are a reservoir of further members for clubs. In their experience, the enormous number of nude people on the beaches are overwhelmingly against organised naturism. In reply, Karl said he simply wanted to express that free beaches do offer a certain potential for new members. In fact he (and others in the room) had been introduced on a free beach to the advantages of membership.

* I pointed out that Art 5.lc of the draft Regulations for INF meetings needed to be deleted. As extraordinary members have no voting right nor are they able to issue membership cards, it was inconsistent that they should be able to put motions! The General Assembly agreed.

* Next Congress - 1998. Probable location is the southern Sweden club Partisanens Naturist Camping (SNF), located some 500km from Stockholm and 130km NE of Mairmo. Dates agreed were Friday 21 August through Sunday 23. I do hope a New Zealand delegate will attend that meeting.

* At the end of the last meeting, each delegate was given an opportunity to address the assembly. I advised that our federation was considering the possibility of hosting the INF Congress early in the new century. The reaction was most favourable. I added that member federations would be canvassed individually for their comments and enthusiasm for it.

In conclusion, I wish to thank the Council for endorsing me as New Zealand delegate. It has provided tangible contact with our partners in the world organisation. I am confident there will continue to be positive developments for our organisation. This is also a great way to enhance the already excellent reputation New Zealand, and local naturism in particular, enjoys overseas.

We're Back!!!

Shirley and Ian Morton

During the latter part of 1994, we were to look back on our 15 or so years of practising naturism with pleasure, satisfaction and a great deal of nostalgia. Soon, it was all to come to an end - we had made a decision to move into a Retirement Estate. A novel environment for us, it would restrict any thoughts of following the movement - no more mowing lawns in the nick, no more wandering around the house unclothed, no more nude sunbathing. Oh well, the end of an era, we concluded.

But the gods were with us. Mere weeks after shifting lock, stock and barrel from our 11-acre nirvana, we began reading reports in the local paper of the battle a certain young couple had while attempting to set up a naturist park at Katikati. The long struggle and controversies were handled by Kevin and Joan with unending patience. Their perseverance deserves a medal and it is to be hoped nudists the world over will take advantage of the venture.

Let's backtrack though to pre-retirement Estate. We had come a long way in our 15 years. Our introduction to this relaxing, levelling, fancy came from the early Rotorua Sun Club, operating in Paradise Valley. Sadly, a farm sale brought about the loss of grounds and so a nucleus of members from Rotorua, Tokoroa and Taupo formed the foundations of the existing Rotota Club. A few Rotoruaites however, who preferred to stay in the district, attempted another new club, Paradise Sunseekers. They had access to Maori land on the edge of Lake Rotoiti, which had been set aside for forestry and recreation. It was an idyllic spot, natural hot pool and all. Nevertheless, once again another demise came about, this time through lack of members. On wind-up, remaining funds were donated to Rotota Sun Club.

Photo: Ian Morton

We had now transferred north, where we made contact with Northern Sunseekers. It seemed we were just not meant to have a permanent association, as this club too was on the way out. For the sake of continuing our interest, we then joined Free Beach, and after retiring, contented ourselves with the pleasure of owning a forest and bush-clad naturist's dreamland, where we were able to welcome fellow-devotees to occupy the holiday cabin located on the property. We had progressed through thick and thin from Rotorua's Paradise Valley to our very own private piece of heaven. At this time, we kept in contact through the Supporters' Group.

Within the next few years we made visits to Mapua and Riverlands. The former probably needs no introduction to the nudists of New Zealand, but the latter for some reason seemed not to appeal. Clothing-optional, the resort offered really typical Kiwi attractions - shooting, horse-riding, tramping, white-water rafting - along with good facilities; all this in the picturesque outback.

Yet it was not sufficiently used by naturists, as the "textiles" eventually won the place over. Was it because of its remote locality? Who knows. The last time we saw Bruce and Pauline, they were in Northland, looking at land in our neck-o'-the-woods. Maybe they intend having another go in a slightly more accessible part of the country.

Anyway, here we were, so we thought, heading for the end of this congenial era, but the innovative Kevin and Joan have rekindled our interest. We bought a NZ Naturist magazine in order to acquaint ourselves with clubs in our new locale and read with interest about the Katikati Naturist Park. We purchased a camper-trailer and who should we meet up with at Katikati recently but the NUDVAN group. As we like the idea of being itinerants, we signed up membership there and then. Just the same, we shall certainly make the most of the lovely Katikati Naturist's Park only 10 minutes away from our home and enjoy again the ever-pleasant company of gregarious fellow-nudists.

THE NAKED TRUTH - PART I
BY TOM HARWOOD

Why do most Christians see nudity and their faith as mutually exclusive? That concept is virtually central to the definition many churches and their adherents have, of what it means to be a Christian.

If they go to a movie or watch a TV programme, violence with blood and gore is generally no problem. They even tolerate the occasional burst of crude language. But they complain loud, long and aggressively if there's a scene with naked bodies - especially if their kids happen to see it.

The only time there's a problem with violence is during censorship debates when it's invariably linked with pornography, which makes you wonder about their own relationships with their partners if their minds can't comprehend that violence and sex are not inextricably linked.

Even when these debates arise, it's the pornography, rather than the violence which attracts the greatest wrath. Of course, the definition of pornography ranges from a bare breast, with or without a baby attached, to explicit vision of a couple making love. The interpretation depends on how conservatively fundamentalist the objector's particular version of Christianity happens to be.

It all seems quite contradictory coming from a religion whose founder told us, "Love your enemies; do good to those who persecute you." Ironically, the more fundamentalist so-called Christian churches become, the further they get from that basic message of Jesus Christ, whose name they self-righteously misuse. They preach sermons in favour of gun ownership and capital punishment while claiming that the mere sight of a naked body is enough to drive people into a unbridled sexual frenzy.

From their perspective, the worst thing in the world is to be a Christian who thinks, instead of mindlessly accepting their message and doing what the leader says. Of course, it's ideal for many people, today, who crave certainty and clear direction in a world of rapid change, but it's hardly an intelligent approach.

How can those who call themselves Christian be so blasé about, and supportive of, violence which is destructive of people and their dignity while objecting to seeing the bodies God made, or expressions of the act of love which creates life, instead of destroying it?

The problem is that the Christianity which has, over many centuries, become entrenched in western society often has little to do with Christ. Many who consider themselves "Christian" are actually "Paulian" and are following interpretations of the teachings of Saul who became the apostle, Paul, not Jesus who gave Christianity its name.

The all-too-frequent tendency is to blindly accept that because a few of Paul's letters are in the Bible, that he's somehow infallible and therefore his pronouncements must be accepted as effectively coming from the mouth of God.

Paul was the Christian church's first academic theologian who, like all new Christians, was coming to grips with what that meant. His thinking and understanding changed over time as he matured in his experience of living life as a Christian. Much of his writing was intended to address particular problems in individual parts of the expanding church and, in many cases, was never meant to be used in the all-encompassing way that has become so common.

Paul's conversion did not create instant perfection. He told the Christians in Corinth that in this life we see only a part of God's truth, like looking through a blurry mirror, but when the world ends, we shall see things clearly. In spite of his apparent certainty in many things, Paul knew he had a lot to learn.

However, it's Paul's ideas, more than Jesus', which have shaped the understanding most people have of Christianity. And that's why Christians so often mistakenly believe the concept of nudity is incompatible with their belief and faith system.

Where's the evidence for my argument? We'll examine that in a later issue.

It was with great excitement that we approached the 1996/97 Rally at "Oranui" the home of Auckland Outdoor Health Club held during the New Year holiday period.

Preparations moved rapidly during the last weeks prior to Christmas to ensure that everything was in place before the opening ceremony on December 28, 1996. Costumes were prepared, theme structures and regalia erected, the marquee, stage and lighting erected and a host of minor works completed in readiness.

With due ceremony, the Mayor of Waitakere City, Mr Bob Harvey opened the proceeding by placing the "Excalibur" into the stone from whence it was to be withdrawn by some valiant knight during the course of the rally.

Following the formal occasion, the knights and maidens of the display team "Knights Draconis" gave a lively display of swordsmanship which held the rally goers spellbound for some thirty minutes or so.

This team from the Auckland Sword and Shield Society, dressed in authentic costume and most suitably armoured and armed for the occasion, enjoyed the opportunity to perform their routines fully on the spacious lawn area fronting the marquee "Pendragon Castle".

At this time there was little evidence of the approaching tropical cyclone "Fergus" developing in the region of the Solomon Islands.

The Annual General Meeting of the New Zealand Nudist Federation was held on the morning prior to the official opening and Kay Hannam of Canterbury was elected President of our Federation. Kay has gained a wealth of experience in naturist activities having previously held positions as South Island Vice President, Trophy Secretary, Club President and rally organiser for her home club at "Pineglades".

The sports fixtures and Top Team activities commenced with much enthusiasm in spite of the gathering storm clouds and spirited wind approaching from the North-East. Preparations in mid-afternoon were well advanced in "Pendragon Castle" for the evening's "Dirty Dicks" banquet. Medieval regalia, lighting, seating and tables were placed in readiness for the costumed affair.

The approaching storm gave considerable concern to the outdoor chefs Graham and Bob who, in the trying conditions were spit roasting two beasts for the evening's meal whilst the sous chefs Grant, Kevin and Greg were making ready the soup, breads and salads.

Buxom wenches were summoned to attend early at the "castle" in readiness for the influx of knights in tights, damsels in distress, fair maids a-swooning, more knights in tights, more buxom wenches, lords, ladies, dragon slayers with drooping swords, suited in rusty armour, all gathering for the festivities soon to commence. This surely was going to be a "knight" to remember.

Precisely at 6.30pm the drawbridge was lowered to allow the waiting revellers entry to the castle, taking their places with due aplomb. Serving wenches scurried with ales of many varieties to quench the thirsty revellers whilst minstrels played to the accompanying merriment.

In due course our master of ceremonies "Merlin" summoned the courtiers in the selection of a King and Queen whom would oversee the evening's entertainment. With the selections duly made amongst much booing and hissing and mild applause, the chosen pair took [a bow].

Occasionally throughout the evening's revelry those who had ogled the buxom wenches too much were led to the stocks where they were made to while away some minutes of their valuable drinking time or miss their favourite dinner course.

By now the evening's entertainment was in full swing and with the various meal courses disposed of, dancing became the main feature. Additional entertainment was provided by a Hawaiian dance troupe flown in from overseas especially for the occasion and who performed traditional Hawaiian style to much applause.

All too soon this great event was past and amidst squally showers and ever increasing winds, the party goers returned to their abodes to take rest before day two dawned.

It might be said that day two was a lost occasion. Not so! Much was made of the inclement conditions to play the indoor sports competitions of darts, draughts, chess, bowls and table tennis.

Amidst the occasional downpour, caused by the passing storm, nudists could be seen in gumboots playing petanque. The good humoured organisers had decided to continue with this competition in spite of the wind and rain.

Although storm-water did enter the marquee, additional drainage did staunch the flow and activities proceeded apace.

Minstrel Johan who played his guitar daily at "Ye Olde Grog Shoppe" - "The Dogs Bollix", moved indoors during the passing storm. His repertoire of traditional music was greatly received by those attending.

Whilst much has been said of the adults entertainment, the children at the rally had two sessions daily of various craft activities under the tutorship of Elizabeth and helpers. Fun activities were also provided such as "slippery slide", bubble bursting, nature trail, a trip to Rainbows End, train ride to the Waitakeres and pikelet making. The children were encouraged to make their costumes for the Perc Cousins Concert and rehearse their item for the show.

This activity provided an additional release of young energy not fully expended in the junior sports programme provided.

With the passing of "Fergus" the weather began a slow improvement leading to New Year's Day.

In the better conditions, the miniten and volleyball competitions were fiercely contested as always, with great rivalry and occasional revelry evident amongst the teams. The Top Team competition - that opportunity for the less athletic and for youngsters to take part in a daily series of fun games - was the lunch time focal point when most of the rally goers gathered to encourage their club teams to greater efforts to win the prized trophy. The "piggy back" jousting proved to be a favourite contest of the set with the final four teams giving every effort in the last event of the series. The A.O.H.C. team of Willy's Bravehearts being narrowly victorious over the Lance-a-lots.

Overseas visitors Chrissy and Ted Bennet of Perth "Sunseekers" were victorious in the Petanque Open Doubles whilst Wendy Atkins of England was successful in the Ladies Swim Trophy and Sarah L. of River Island Nature Retreat - Australia, won the girls' 11-13 years swim trophy.

With sixty trophies available for competition, the sports programme over the six rally days is very intense.

The New Year's Eve festivities of "Witches and Wizards" was the second great rally occasion for dress-up. By now the rain and wind has eased somewhat allowing the wizards wands to perform fully their magic without fizzing through too much damp. Broomsticks were evident amongst the "witches" but were soon placed to one side once the music of the band started. All danced until midnight when pleasantries were exchanged by all so gathered and a brilliant fireworks display concluded the evening's entertainment.

New Year's day dawned bright and fine allowing many of the competitions to progress through to the finals.

Meanwhile, a second storm "Drina" was developing in the tropics to threaten the final days of the rally.

On the evening of 2nd January, Sir Howard, a worthy knight from Wellington, withdrew the mighty sword "Excalibur" and was rewarded with the return of the few gold pieces he had proffered to be part of the festivities.

In an exclusive interview with our roving reporter, Sir Howard indicated that he was having a little fiddle with it when it just popped out.

Many a true knight and maiden had attempted the sword's removal previously but alas for them 'twas to no avail.

Some 60 chickens had been spit roasted for this worthy occasion to be washed down with mulled wine and other beverages, supplemented by a variety of salads, cheeses, breads and delicacies fit for a king.

All too soon it seemed, the last day of the rally arrived and the presentation of trophies took place. The members' meeting concluded the festivities and although no formal rally venue was made available for next year, it had been agreed, earlier at the NZNF meeting that Rotota Sun Club would provide the next NZNF Annual Meeting venue with limited facilities for adventure type activities and camping.

"Pendragon Castle" was taken down early on the morning of January 4, 1997 in anticipation that the second storm "Drina" approaching from the north might cause more damage than the first. Whilst the marquee was dry from two days of reasonably fine weather it was easily handled and packaged in readiness for collection.

Other facilities that had been erected especially for the rally were removed and the grounds tidied in readiness for the normal club camping and recreation which continues throughout summer and beyond.

The many visitors to "Oranui" for the rally left reluctantly to visit other clubs on their journeys home, completing for them a very enjoyable experience of "Medieval Madness" at Auckland Outdoor Health Club.

The unexpected happenings which I am about to relate were absolutely out of his control. No one could have anticipated what mother nature and lady luck had in store for us.

All went well at first as the Kewpie Too motored sedately down the Kaipara River and into the southern arm of the Kaipara Harbour - the largest enclosed body of water in the southern hemisphere. Skipper Terry Somers gave us a commentary about the history and geography of the river and harbour as we cruised along. There was a slightly cool breeze on the water which kept most people in the cabin, but the more hardy (or foolhardy?) preferred the open top deck where we not only got a better view, but could also strip off and enjoy the warming rays of the sun.

After morning tea we passed a boatload of locals who were somewhat surprised by the unexpected appearance of a tour-boat with its top deck adorned by naked people. They probably "dined out" on that story for some time afterwards. A little later we passed close by some fishermen on the shore. We distinctly heard one say "I can't believe my eyes! I'll have to sit down!"

Crossing the harbour entrance, where the swells come in from the Tasman Sea, was slightly lumpy, but we soon reached North Head, and sailed back into sheltered waters near Pouto village.

After lunch on board, we made landfall at a secluded sheltered beach, where we enjoyed a little sunbathing or beach combing without disturbing any local inhabitants. The sand in the Kaipara is fine and golden, and we could easily have settled for a longer stay at this delightful spot.

For the rest of the afternoon we cruised sedately up the harbour and followed the Northern Wairoa River to Dargaville. From the jetty we took what must be the shortest bus ride in the world - all of 200 metres - to the Northern Wairoa Hotel. So far, so good. After an excellent meal and a comfortable bed, everyone was looking forward to another great nude day.

Doug Ball describes an eventful
two days "nude cruising" on the
Kaipara Harbour

The fifty-nine nudists who climbed onto the bus at the Auckland Outdoor Health Club early one Saturday morning had no idea what an eventful time lay ahead. We knew we were going on a nude cruise up the Kaipara Harbour from Helensville aboard the "M.V. Kewpie Too".

We knew we'd be over-nighting at a hotel in Dargaville, driving in a bus down the west coast ocean beach to Pouto, and re-boarding Kewpie Too for the trip home. We imagined two days of sunshine on a sheltered harbour and deserted beach with little need for clothes, except during the hotel stay.

Tony Judson, our organiser, did a grand job of planning all the details of this unique trip.

First stop after breakfast was at the Northern Wairoa Maritime Museum - a "must see" for any visitors to Dargaville - which displays fascinating relics from wrecked sailing vessels from the Kauri logging days.

Then the "fun" began. Back in the bus, driver Anthony first explained that since he was a "Christian" he was a little uneasy about his "first time" with a party of nudists. But not to worry - we could do what we liked in the bus as long as we covered the seats. He would look out the front of the bus! The mind boggles!

From Dargaville the bus wended its way down Glinks Gully onto the great western ocean beach, to be met by a howling gale which whipped up a swirling fog of dry sand. The sea was a mass of white-caps. The beach is really beautiful - wide and flat and stretching away to the horizon. What a pity it wasn't a fine day. I had visions of enjoying a nude run along the sand, but being sand-blasted is not my idea of fun.

As we drove along, Anthony provided a continuous commentary about the local history, etc, etc. My young grand daughter dubbed him "Mr Chatterbox", because he hardly paused for breath. We stopped to visit an old hut in the dunes. Some braved the storm to make the trip, while others sheltered in the lee of the bus. The sun was shining but no one was tempted to strip off in that wind, so Anthony need not have worried about nudity. He donned a wetsuit and went out into the water to find us some tua tua shellfish, but that was a wasted effort. The tide was too high.

Soon Anthony's "little wife" arrived in an enormous four-wheel- drive vehicle and went on ahead to "make tracks" for the bus. Near North Head the bus was stopped and the front wheels driven onto wooden shutters to keep it from sinking into the sand while most of us set off on our next adventure - a climb up to the famous Kaipara lighthouse. The higher we climbed, the stronger the wind became. By the time we reached the top of the hill the sandstorm was well over our heads and we could hardly see where we were going.

It was like a blizzard in Antarctica, with sand instead of snow!

Somehow we all groped our way back to the bus and continued round to Pouto for lunch in the shelter of the motor camp hall. Fortunately, there was a doctor in our party who applied his professional skills to removing sand from under eyelids. Oh, the relief!

By now it was about 1 pm. Kewpie Too was supposed to pick us up and take us down to Parakai, but the skipper decided it was too rough to cross the harbour entrance. He cruised up and down the inland coast hoping for a drop in the wind, but finally abandoned the whole idea about 4pm.

Every so often during the afternoon we would gather round for the next "on-again-off-again" progress report. The boat, the bus, the boat, the bus, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm... At every new change of plan a cheer would go up!

Meanwhile our party tried to find a sheltered spot on the beach out of the wind. Our intrepid leader actually got his gear off for about five minutes! Finally we climbed back into the bus at 5.15pm for a hair-raising trip up a twisting gravel road to Dargaville, where we had an evening meal at the hotel.

Adventure over? No way! After waiting in the bus until 8.15pm for a co-driver to arrive, we set off down the highway towards Auckland. An hour later a fuel blockage precipitated a detour along a country road for some help from a "bus driver friend". More cheers!

With the fuel filter cleaned, all went well for another hour or so, then, as we were climbing a hill near Helensville, the front left tyre went flat...

At long last the second day of our "nude cruise" finally ended as we drove into the AOHC grounds at 1 am (7 hours later than planned)! Not as much "nude" or as much "cruise" as we would have liked, but we'd had a most interesting time.

The trip had been fun in a perverse kind of way, and we all enjoyed the experience. Our driver had driven his first party of nudists, and visited his first nudist club, and still not seen a naked person! Perhaps he will have better luck next time!

Congratulations, Tony, for thinking up the idea, and organising everything so well. These are just the kind of trips we nudists should do more often!

The car park has been levelled, trees planted and we have been fortunate in welcoming visitors from many parts of New Zealand to our grounds. All have enjoyed their stay, be it brief or somewhat more lengthy.

We have managed our first camp-in, social weekend and we were certainly grateful to those neighbouring club members who supported our first fun weekend. November, 23/24 saw a large number of campers on the grounds, where we all enjoyed good company, good food and good music. Even the fickle weather of the time was kind to us, allowing folks to play volleyball, petanque, indoor bowls, darts and of course dancing throughout the night to a great disco. Thank you to those who attended, we hope that in the not too distant future you will return.

The spacious clubhouse proved it was capable of holding a large crowd without the members feeling cramped and claustrophobic. Of course it was a relatively warm evening and many spent time on the large sun deck enjoying each other's company.

This summer is our first camping season and several of our members have camped on the grounds enjoying the peace and tranquillity that Woodside Park has to offer. We are also on the international map as we have had campers from England, three families from Australia and a representative from Canada have found time to spend a while and enjoy that which we have to offer.

We welcome fellow nudist travellers to call in a while, visit the sunken garden, walk the bush track, lounge on the sun-deck, sleep over night in the clubhouse, then spend a few days exploring what the Waikato has to offer. Where? At Woodside Park, 50A Trentham Road, Matangi, Hamilton.

The Medieval Rally at Camelot has been and gone. All that remains is the sword of Excalibur - returned to the stone by the Knight Sir Howard of Wellington on the return of his few gold pieces.

Memories abound of Trevor the Lionheart, Merlin presiding during "Dirty Dick's" night in the great hall, the sword and shield challenge during the opening of the tournament.

Cyclone "Fergus" visited, disrupting the variety of sports events resulting in some new and some old winners. There was much merriment in "Ye Olde Grog Shoppe" - "The Dogs Bollix" ably run by Sir Norman, his wenches and lads.

There was much sand in our shoes after New Year's Eve, the witches and wizards present saw the New Year in with fireworks as the cauldron exploded. Lady Donna and her wenches regaled us on many occasions and Sir Brian of the upper estate achieved a "hole in one" at golf.

Lady Pamela and Lady Cherie published the "Camelot Crusader" daily advising of the jousting contests, the social events complemented with juicy bits of gossip and won the "Brown Arm" Trophy, a trophy passed down through the many tournaments since it was first won by myself in my younger days.

So many memories, so much hard work by so many; my quill is in danger of running out of ink. None of you are forgotten. Sir Michael and his team can be proud of their effort in the preparations of this wondrous tournament.

Following the petanque played in very wet conditions, there is an amendment to the international rules: "Should the kitty be floating, it shall be moved to the nearest high ground." Thanks to Helga and Erich for their good humour in the wet.

Cyclone "Drina" a week later at Rotota had the pictures swaying wildly. Three came down, with no damage. The thirty people there had great pot luck dinners, BBQs and managed some waterskiing and tourist tiki-tours for visitors on the Sunday.

Hosting the 97/98 Rally, in whatever form we agree on, will be an exciting event for us. As soon as we have firm details we will write to all clubs and the Naturist. Watch this space.

The Tauranga Hot Pool day will be held on Saturday 10 May, 1997. See your club newsletter for details. Remember to "Go Rotota 97".

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC

It is with deep regret that we record the passing of two of our members on our grounds on New Year's Day. We will miss seeing Archie and Trevor on our grounds. Our deepest sympathy go to their families. They left the same way as they came into the world, naturally.

A most successful Mini Rally was held over Wellington Anniversary weekend. Miniten, tenniquoit and the increasingly popular, petanque was played. A plate event was played in the miniten draw which proved popular and will also be played at our Club Champs.

Saturday night At the races saw horses being auctioned off before each race and flutters being made on preferred horses. At the throw of the dice the jockeys moved along either 1 lap, 4 laps or over hurdles. Some jockeys only just made it out of the stalls as the winner came in. A very enjoyable night indeed.

On Sunday night we tasted several wonderful dishes from around the world with our Ethnic Barbecue. The night was capped off with impromptu acting and singing from several members and visitors. Many thanks to all our members and visitors who helped make the weekend such a success.

During the winter four pine trees were removed from the bank in the upper camping area. The clearing up process is almost complete and the caravans will be able to move back soon. Consequently we have plenty of firewood for sale.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB INC.

Beautiful sunny days and calm conditions in our summer holidays have shown that the Wanganui Sun Club is still in great shape. With all the campers and day trippers, the Club's grounds have been well used. And don't they look a great sight - all that green grass, freshly mown.

The mini ten court had a good deal of use, but the usual tournaments were not played due to lack of fitness by the members. The pine trees on the hill sides are ready for felling but that may be a few years away yet.

Our Clubhouse was well decorated for Christmas with lots of balloons, tinsel and a Christmas tree. The New Year was seen in with a silly hat competition. Due to all the work done on the grounds, it really looks like a park.

There are now some interesting flower beds with many and varied types of flowers just waiting to flower in October when the Wanganui Sun Club celebrates its Golden Jubilee. Yes, 50 years ago our Club was founded and all former members are invited to be in Wanganui at Labour Weekend 1997. Tent sites, caravans and the bunkhouse will be available for occupation for this important milestone in our history.

HIBISCUS COAST SUN CLUB INC.

Summer is now well and truly upon us after a late start. Several members enjoyed the rally at AOHC. This was great fun despite cyclone Fergus. It was time to strip off and enjoy. Sports by day and dress up in fancy dress at night. It was good that so many clubs were represented at the rally.

Cyclone Fergus gave our Club's grounds a good wash but fortunately there was no damage. Other members have enjoyed Uretiti beach and the fishing there was great. The swim nights begin again in February and are great fun. Look for our article in NZ Naturist 159. Best wishes from all at Kirikau.
