Thanks and Apologies.

It is with great satisfaction and gratitude, that we acknowledge the many articles sent in for publication during the last quarter. New features have blossomed forth with this issue and now there is something for the whole family. The Review, with the help of its growing contributors, is getting bigger and better and deserves full support from every member. An overseas editor wrote the other day and called the last issue "a mighty effort. Fabulous", and goes on to tell us what we need to make it the full scale magazine we want it to become. The next editorial will discuss some of these points and a number of contributions that we just cannot fit into this issue will also appear next time. These will include:-
* The Winning Essay,
* Willy's Discovery,
* Do Naturists Worship the Sun?
and we are sorry and pleased at the same time to be in this position. So don't miss the next issue.

IMPROVED NATIONAL FITNESS.

On the first page of this Review there appears the legend, "NEW ZEALAND'S ONLY NATURIST MAGAZINE... a valuable contribution to a better world."

It is certain that this will not be understood nor believed by many outside our ranks and without some knowledge of what the nudist movement is doing, this is understandable. However, it is one thing to misunderstand and not criticise and another to misunderstand and continue to condemn. After all, there are lots of things all of us do not grasp, but intelligent folk will leave such things to those who do understand them and not condemn because of ignorance. Unfortunately so may of us do not do that, so maybe we can take at the quotation to which we have referred. "Right," says our thoughtless critic, "How on earth can you improve the world by taking your pants off?" A fair question even though crudely expressed. No doubt the same thought would run through the minds of many others interested enough to give it a second consideration and if that was all there was to it, we would have to accept the accusation so frequently levelled at us that we are a little crazy.

But the undressing part of being a nudist is by the way. It means so very much more to all genuine members of nudist clubs, for here is a type of real enjoyment for the whole family, improving minds and bodies at one and the same time. Believe it or not, the sight of men, women and children in the nude does not arouse sexual desire or undesirable thoughts of any nature... quite the reverse in fact. Whether this statement is accepted or not, it is still true and the world would be a better place if we could accept the unclothed body... all of it... for the wonderful piece of machinery that it undoubtedly is.

There is so much thoughtless humbug about it, engendered by conventional thinking. Especially this is the case with regard to education of the young. Nudist children accept the physical differences of the people around them in our clubs as natural, without any fuss, exhibitionism or undue emphasis. Their minds are clean and they are fitted to face the world and its problems frankly and fearlessly and their parents are similarly better off too.

Surely we must acknowledge that a world freed of harmful fears and misunderstandings about sex and our bodies will be a better one, especially when replaced with a dignified acceptance of these things. This is exactly what nudists the world over are experiencing and we thoroughly commend the practise to all sincere people everywhere.

We have reached the stage beyond speculation or theory for we are PROVING daily that this publication and others like it, are definitely a valuable contribution to a better world.

Goint the Sun Way

By Bob R. (C.S. & H.C.)

The 1914-1918 war was drawing to a close, and, under-aged, war-torn and war-weary, I was in an advanced state of physical and mental exhaustion. Then, a dose of poison gas, and out I went. Pleurisy, the doctors said, and removed large quantities of fluid. Then pneumonia, and weeks on the dangerously ill list. Finally, suspected T.B. Then I was told the sad story. One lung had collapsed, and the ribs on that side had caved in. They assured me however, that there was no reason why I should not lead a reasonably normal life if I took care of myself and lived in a suitable climate. It was winter time, so they carried me aboard a hospital ship, as they said i could not survive an English winter. I was just able to walk off the ship in New Zealand. The old family doctor took charge of me, and when he found that exhaustive tests were T.B. negative, he said, "Well, you are going the sun way."

This, I learned was sun, sun & more sun with a minimum of clothing at all times to let the skin breathe. So, naked whenever possible, I worked on the farm, my bare feet in the dewy grass, and the sun and wind on my body and the wind in my hair. My damaged lung soon decided to take up its normal duties, and causing me great discomfort in the process, gradually over a period of a few years pushed out my sunken ribs into their former position. In a few years I was passed for life insurance.

Over forty years have since passed, and I am still a sun addict and enthusiast, and few people of my age are fitter than I am. I seem to be immune to colds, 'flu and epidemics. Conventional dress, overcoats, mufflers, collars and ties, padded lounge suits and waistcoats - is an anathema to me.

Last weekend at the Canterbury Sun and Health Club grounds, I stood and admired the youth and beauty at play, and this thought crossed my mind. Some people, in their search for beauty, pay colossal sums of money for a painting or a piece of sculpture, and here it was - FREE!

For me it was difficult to visualise anything more beautiful than this gathering of bronzed, healthy, uninhibited, care-free people. It is a great pity we cannot put our story over to a larger percentage of the public. So many of them have so much to gain from "Going the Sun Way."

Pen Portrait

GERALD WAKELY OF AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB.

Among nudists, as with lesser breeds, there are some few who have the energy and drive to get things done, and others who have not. Gerald is one of those who have. His extraordinary capacity for work and organisation has contributed much to make the Auckland Outdoor Health Club one of the leading clubs in New Zealand. Enthusiasts like Gerald may be difficult or impossible colleagues and indeed committee members and National Association Officers may have sometimes considered that he tends to ride roughshod over the feelings of others to achieve progress. His answer is as forthright as his other opinions. A progressive leader will inevitably find opposition and must not be afraid of making enemies. The too common attitude "neither for nor against" or "she's right mate" leads to stagnation.

In six years as President, Gerald has never merely been a figurehead, but a true leader. He has cajoled, bludgeoned and otherwise guided and bullied the members of A.O.H.C. into developing the club from a few families to a group of about 100 adults with perhaps the best camp grounds in N.Z. He has also contributed much to the formation of the N.Z.S.A. and has ably filled the office of P.R.O. since its inception.

Throughout his activities Gerald has been supported by his wife, Karin, and a visit to their home will show that nudism is but one of their varied activities. The Wakely living-room is packed to the ceiling with books, for they are book-searchers, and a display room for handicraft articles, pottery and fabrics, will indicate other interests.

Nudism in Auckland, and indeed throughout N.Z. is indebted to the dedication and ability of Gerald and Karin, who have not hesitated to put advancement of nudism before their personal prestige.

As promised in the last issue, we bring you the return trip to New Zealand, enjoyed by Albert of the W.S.& H.S. The previous article was called, "Back to England After Ten Years." Now read...

A Pommie Returns to NZ

By Albert, W.S.& H.S.

My journey resumed on the 10th. Sept. from Southampton. An early departure from Dover at 6.30am. with only two minutes to collect a case which I had thoughtfully brought down the day before. Then to London for the boat-train. Leaving the quay at Southampton at 3pm. in the Southern Cross, we sailed to Cowes Roads and anchored till 10pm. when we got under way.

Monday morning found us at Las Palmas, Canary Is. and another turn around the Island. A pretty place in parts, warm and sunny, luscious grapes and bananas, terraced vineyards, camels and donkeys pulling big carts. Away again that night toward Capetown and arriving greeted by mist and rain and no Table Mountain.

It brightened later and the sun shone and a turn round the city and seafronts, bays, etc. with an evening trip halfway up the mountain, 1800', to see the lights. A bit scary looking down into almost nothing, especially at night. I made no attempt to go up by Aerial Cable Car.

Away again around the Cape of Good Hope - it was a bit rough - then on to Durban. A day trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills a few "native" Zulus, the Zulu rickshaws, lovely suburban houses, bush and flowers, and shopping.

Early, 6am., forward again to Freemantle, gateway to Perth. It was warmer now and the streets were thronging with people. Onward again to Melbourne, nearing the end of another voyage, touring the city and suburbs and the University. Going up 3000' in the Dandenongs to see the lovely view and forward again.

The last port of call for me was Sydney, where we spent two whole days, one to go to the Blue Mountains, 40 miles out - the deep gorge covered with bush, the town of Katoomba at the very edge of this precipice. The Zoo, with the quaint Koala Bears, mostly sleeping, the horrible snakes, some curled up like sausages, long green pythons and alligators. A trip to Randwick Races, and one to the Harbour Bridge, 400 feet from the sea to the top, the mast of the Southern Cross just making it.

We leave again early on the third day, which was misty and cool. Then Wellington, where we arrived on Wd. Oct. 21st. We anchored outside at 7am. with wind and rain greeting us - the same probably that was there when we left, although it warmed up later. A good voyage but a lot cooler than going and hardly any sunbathing.

NZSA

NEW ZEALAND SUNBATHING ASSOCIATION.

Our Review.

This magazine continues to serve the interests of N.Z. nudists and and appears to meet with approval elsewhere. We recently received congratulations from a Canadian Club, the Maritans, and a subscription for two years. Our friends in Australia also gave us a spotlight on the last issue of Solar and referred to the rigorous style we have pursued in the past. They sent a subscription, too. Scanning through the mail we select a few comments which help to make the work easier for it is nice to know that efforts are appreciated.

"Please find enclosed a postal note for 5/- being my next year's subscription for the Review. And keep up the good work." - B.C.S., Hamilton.

"Have just received the first issue (No. 15) of your magazine which we find very helpful and interesting." - E.F., Auckland.

"I enjoy the Review very much... wish it came out more often. Wishing you and the Association all the best." - J.M., Gisborne.

Any takers for the position of Review Accountant?

How's this from our mail?

"I want 3 doz. of 16th. issue complete, take off what is paid for (in the 20 copies) and the 15/6, add the 16/9 and send me an account and I will settle." We wonder whether we should take away the number we first thought of? Anyway, it's all settled.

A reader has suggested we place the Review in doctor's waiting rooms. Now that is a thought and here is a chance for someone with a bit of spare time to do a worthwhile job in helping to increase our circulation and maybe help someone in need of the sort of treatment our sun clubs can give them. All that is needed is to get the names and address's of doctors, chiropractors, etc. who would be agreeable to displaying our magazine in their waiting rooms. If your local club is unable to finance this, then send the particulars to this office and we will attend to it from National funds. Who is willing?

A Reminder and a Warning.

It is important that new members know that we have an agreement with the Customs Dept. regarding nudist magazines. The English and Australian ones, having retouched illustrations, may be sold and bought freely in N.Z. Continental and American ones may be imported in restricted quotas by the clubs and this office. NO INDIVIDUALS MAY IMPORT THESE LATTER PUBLICATIONS. Should they try they'll only be served with seizure notices on arrival, like Perc. received recently on account of a magazine from Denmark that was addressed to him personally at his private address. Members from overseas may import magazines from their own countries, but this office MUST be notified first in order that the Customs can receive proper authority from us.

Nudist Films.

The movie "Nudist Paradise", has now enjoyed its N.Z. premiere, screening in Wellington in a major theatre for a week, and in a suburban for four sessions. Local members enjoyed it but it could not be rated as first class entertainment for the uninitiated. Undoubtedly it was artistically presented in colour and much thought had been given it to preserve the dignity and good taste our movement demands. Managements were pleased, though the lack of women was unfortunate. The Wellington Club took full advantage of it, tying in with screen slides, a large poster in the foyer and advertisements on alternate nights in the Press. 31 enquiries were received, including several nice couples. The type of men applying was agreeably pleasing, most of them being desirable types and none that might be thought to be attracted. The club was satisfied with the whole thing and feels it was well worthwhile. In summing up it could be said that as an entertainment the film was poor, as a semi-documentary it was good, and as nudist advertising it was excellent. There is every possibility that it will be available in other centres and secretaries will be notified immediately the information is available.

"Travelling Light" is a full length film in colour designed to bring to the public the simple and natural truths of nudism and nudists. It aspires to no love interests and contains few of the ingredients that appear to be considered necessary for commercial exploitation on the screen. It describes many of the experiences Elizabeth, (well-known English Naturist often featured in Health and Efficiency) had during her life as a naturist and stars her practically throughout. The rest of the cast is entirely amateur and includes folk from nine different countries. Michael Ketering the producer, who is also a naturist, suffered every imaginable set-back during the filming, but eventually finished up with film of which he is proud and feels will present nudism to the public in a most acceptable manner. In view of all the difficulties he overcame, we certainly wish the film every success. Reports from some of nudism's severest critics praise the effort and we await further news of this venture with interest.

The picture "Adam and Eve" has also been screened in Wellington and a few comments will not be out of place. The only connection it has with our movement is the fact that the only two characters seen are nude... or apparently so. We sit through over an hour of make believe that could be told in a few minutes, but the attempt, while seldom convincing, is interesting and in many respects, praiseworthy.

Without delving further into the merits or demerits of the production, it nevertheless is another proof of the gradual acceptance of the nude on the cinema screen. The performers... both of them... were obviously not nude and the lady's long hair was as effective as that of Lady Godiva's. The posing and pre-arrangement of trees and leaves became too obvious, but we must admit that the whole conception was in good taste and can be regarded as another step... a small one... towards a better acceptance of our ideals.

 NZSA

Wedding bells.

We all extend our very best wishes to Norman and Helen of A.O.H.C. who were married at Easter. Norman has been connected with the movement for a number of years and has been Treasurer and NZSA delegate of his club in more recent years. We met Helen at the last Rally and all will agree that Norman is a lucky chap. The very best to both of you.

Wedding bells have also been ringing at Wanganui, where Ivan and Nora's daughter, Anne was married at Easter. We wish the happy couple every happiness and hope the movement gains one more member as a result.

Nudist Fashions at Auckland: plunging necklines.

When the husband of one of the contestants in the sack race at the recent Rally saw a picture of his wife struggling down the fairway, he commented, "Well, well, fancy Her Royal Highness in the bag. I've persuaded her that she is absolutely unrecognisable in the sack look (a bit daring in the neck line.)"

Excellent Public Relations.

A man in Australia heard the broadcast from Christchurch recently which was taped at the grounds and consisted of questions and answers and was quite well put over. Being interested he wrote to the station for the address of the club but not having this he was given that of the Wellington club. He has since written to them enquiring about membership as he intends to cross the Tasman in about a year. You never know, do you?

9th National Rally.

We would remind you all that the next big get-together will be held in the grounds of the Wanganui Sun Club 31st. Dec. - 2nd. Jan. 1961. We want a full muster, especially from the "Mainland" and it is not too soon to think of booking arrangements. Also remember the Executive will meet 30th. Dec. Lots of information later, but start planning now.

"A LITTLE CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM."

By Ad, W.S.& H.S.

A reporter was asking a mother of three children their reaction on seeing their parents in the nude. "They don't think anything of it." she replied. "Our children are used to it from childhood... the only thing that strikes me... (and she grinned) is that they come home from school sometimes, with dirty jokes, told by other kids, which we have to explain to them, because they don't understand them. They don't realise that the taboos with which the adults surround sex, doesn't exist for them. Common nudity is quite normal to them.

Grandparents

DELINQUENT GRANDPARENTS.

It is always interesting to know what other people have to say about nudity and here is an item with which we heartily agree. It comes from a splendid pamphlet entitled "An open letter to Delinquent Grandparents" by James David McMillan. It is worth reading. Copies at 1/- may be purchased at the Peacemaker Foundation, P.O. Box 531, Palmerston North.

"There is no occasion for prudity. No virtue in covering up nudity. The evil is not nudity, but in misuse of nudity. It would be foolish indeed to try to hide from youth the great and wonderful law of creation wrapped up in the duality of sex. One of the strangest aspects of this age is revealed in the debates amongst the prudish as to whether adolescents should receive true sex education. While the debate continues, polluted streams of "sex education" are being served up to adolescents before the very eyes of those who are wondering whether the truth would do the adolescents any harm."

And here are two short extracts taken from recent copies of "Sunshine and Health" U.S.A.

"Modesty lies with the individual, just as dignity does, and not with the area covered by a costume, however decorative and colourful."

"Among his inalienable rights of man we find... life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." A foreign Ambassador who considered the Americans crazy to guarantee a man happiness was corrected by a wise Benjamin Franklin. "... we merely guarantee him the right to pursue happiness. He much catch it for himself."

INF

International Naturist Federation

YOUTH SECTIONS.

The following countries are now officially recognised by the I.N.F. as having appointed Youth Leaders on a national scale.

France (FFN)     U.S.A. (ASA)     England (BSBA)

FINLAND - UNESCO AND NUDISM.

The world congress held at Helsinki last year, to which the I.N.F. was invited, proved to be a great success. The I.N.F. delegates were Rene F. Kielinger and Karwilli Damm. The former addressed the gathering for 20 minutes, stressing the desirability of combining nudism with sport. As more than 200 delegates were present, representing 38 countries and 60 speeches were delivered, we can understand that the subjects of sport and work, culture and an international understanding were given a thorough airing. The congress lasted 6 days and included displays, dinners social events and receptions etc. A visit to a real Finnish sauna bath did not deter many of the company from enjoying this pleasure in the nude together. The INF report concluded with, "one thing is clear: when naturism becomes 'mores sport', so the sports movement will become 'more naturist' and human culture and joy become higher. Let's think of this in our programmes and let's continue our contact with international sports movements and UNESCO.

CANANDA.

It is with regret that we read of a split between Eastern and Western Canada. A new organisation known as the Ontario Federation of Nudist Clubs (OFNC) has been formed and appears to be in dispute with the Canadian Sunbathing Association (CSA), which has done so much for the movement in that country in the past.

U.S.A.

The American SUN, a magazine hitherto published every second month, is to appear during 1960. We have no doubt that this is due to the victory governing the distribution of naturist magazines in the U.S.A.

A lady by the name of Miyoko Sasaki was sent to the U.S.A. by the Japanese Government on an arrangement to live with a typical American family for one month. The family selected happened to be a nudist one... Don and Pamela Johnson and their son. We must concur no finer selection could have been made. The Johnsons visited Oakdale, a go-ahead club and took Miyoko along. During the photography hour she was allowed to take pictures of the Mrs. Autumn contest, which possibly can be used to promote the cause of nudism in the Orient when she returns. When we consider the Japanese custom of the public bath, we wonder just what the reception would be.

YUGOSLAVIA.

It has been an "open secret" that on certain spots of the Adriatic coast, nude bathing is tolerated, but so far this has not been officially allowed. Now, however, it appears to have received official sanction. The prospectus from the national tourist office, Putnik, for the island of Rab states in its 1959 issue for the first time that English Bay has been used for years for this purpose. "Sonnenleben" the monthly journal of Austria's national organisation, states that the number of Yugoslavian visitors to English Bay increases annually.

DENMARK.

The movement received unexpected and gratifying radio publicity recently and it cost nothing. It was obtained during a series of "Chance Call" programmes in which 2 enterprising journalists challenge each other to produce the most original ideas. Erik Bach started the series by making his first chance call on the Danish naturist area, Solbakken. His broadcast was most successful and a great many well known members of the Danish Naturist Federation, including members of the clergy, were invited on the air.

After a fortnight, during which naturists were mentioned many times, Erik Bach brought the series to a close by another visit to Solbakken where he put an effective end to it all by jumping into the water, together with his colleague, head first... and without clothes.

Those broadcasts sparked off an avalanche of newspaper discussion, all first class publicity which resulted in an increase in membership.

ENGLAND.

The "Sunlanders", the British Youth Group, formed last year by Jack Gray, is happily marching on. They are making plans for another trip to the continent this coming summer and are planning the formation of their own camp in England. Wherever they have visited in the past, they have left behind pleasant memories and clubs who have been their hosts are prepared to accept them without payment of the usual fees. It is indeed pleasing to hear of the success of this most important venture.

BRAZIL.

The naturist group in this country, which was affiliated to the I.N.F. has been disbanded for a variety of reasons. Former members have thrown in their lot with Rio de Janeiro enthusiasts with a view to founding a new group. The official title is Fraternidade Naturista Internacional. Grounds consisting of an island, covered with trees and bushes and with a spring of fresh water, have already been rented. Materials for building are on the site.

AUSTRALIA.

We learn from the Aussie naturist magazine, Solar, that the closing of the Sunray club near Melbourne, has turned out for the best. The members held meetings, discussed ways and means of carrying on and explored every avenue to keep the flag flying. To make a long story short, the outcome of all the planning and scheming was three healthy, progressive and very promising clubs. So around Melbourne we now have the Helios Society, Sun Valley Club, and the Northside Country Club. The Australian directory now lists 13 clubs and it appears a cordial welcome is extended to any N.Z.'ers fortunate to be able to visit across the Tasman. The list of addresses is available from this office.

International Organisation for Clergymen.

Clergymen in different parts of the world have evinced interest in an International Organisation for some years, but progress has been handicapped by the fact that none of them have been willing to do the organising or permit their names to be used. Now the Rev. Poul Andersen of Hvilsage pr. Morko/Denmark has agree to undertake the work involved. The significance and necessity for cooperation among differing religious thoughts is obvious and the INF commends this idea to any interested. Ministers in Denmark, Germany, Austria, France, and U.S.A. have already shown interest. Further details are available from the Rev. P. Andersen.

Alpine Winter Sports Trip

We don't have to envy the folk over in Europe any longer. Jim Q., an experienced mountaineer and member of the Wellington club is prepared to organise an exclusive weekend, 15th. - 17th. July at Mt Ruapehu. Transport will leave Wellington at 7pm. on the Friday night, returning approximately 10pm. on Sunday. The party would stay at a club lodge at 5000' on the mountain and skiing, sunbathing and fun in the snow would be the order of the day, with a "let-your-hair-down" party on Saturday night. The total cost will be under £5 per person and the party would consist of no more than 24. Members outside Wellington will be welcome, but unless they can link-up with the Wellington party en-route, they would have to arrange their own transport. Apart from that Jim is prepared to make all the other arrangements. If you are interested, drop a line to this office and mark your envelope, "Winter Sports." And if you are interested, DON'T LEAVE IT TOO LATE. Better still, DO IT NOW. Have a marvelous time and put NZ on the map again.

The best thing to take when you are run down is the other fellow's licence number.

Talking to Women

with JOAN TREANOR.

A sincere greeting to all women naturists and prospective naturists. Our Editor said to me a little while ago that it was about time our magazine sported a page for the female, and asked, or should I say, subtly hinted, That I attempt it. This effort is the result of hours of thought, many mistakes, and atrocious typing, but I hope that we can get together over those pages discussing the feminine point of view, which is most important.

Listening to the weather forecasts lately and experiencing a recent heavy hail storm, it seems as if Old Man Winter is about to put in an early appearance throughout N.Z. Although when the word 'winter' is mentioned you immediately associate it in your mind with the idea of being crouched over a blazing fire, this is really the time for the newcomers to join our ranks. Not for those people will there be a torrent of painful sunburn, instead they will be fortunate and acquire a tan slowly from the warm days, which will be more beneficial to them. When summer once more arrives, you you will find that, like the old timer, you will also sport a lovely tan.

A newcomer to one of our clubs expressed herself very neatly I thought with her impressions of a club she has recently joined. This is what Rosemarie said and I am sure that her idea is heartily endorsed by most of us, "As i work 6 days a week I have always tried to have Sunday as a day of rest, both physically and mentally. At home I have found this impossible. When I met people the other week, who belonged to your Society I realised I had found the answer at last."

You need only visit any of the clubs in N.Z. to be assured of a warm welcome. I know, myself, that after I stayed at A.O.H.C. following the Rally, both Glenis and I were well looked after by members, both out at the club and also at member's homes, where we were taken for a good hot meal and a lovely hot bath. At Wellington where we stayed for a few days before finally returning home, we again felt the friendliness of the people, most of whom were strangers to us, but who put themselves out to look after us. We were met at the bus late at night and taken to our rooms for the night. After depositing our cases we were taken out for supper, and then again returned to our rooms, although this was quite some distance out of our hosts way. When we unfortunately struck some rain and were practically flooded out of the club,we were taken again to a private home and given lunch, a hot bath and then dinner. Not content with that those kind people took us down to the boat and saw us safely aboard. Again further surprise was in store for us as about eight members of the club turned up to give us a send-off, also telling us that we were welcome to come again any time.

It is the friendliness, and sincerity, of these people in the clubs that makes the newcomer so at home almost immediately. Therefore, if a newcomer is afraid of what she will find, she will undoubtedly be in for a pleasant surprise.

At various times people have said to me, "Well, how did you feel at the idea of joining a sun club and what were your first impressions?" From these questions I have decided to write my feelings, so that perhaps newcomers can read them and know that not everybody can take to naturism without qualms. Perhaps other women could write out their first impressions, too. I am sure that this idea would help the nervous and perhaps apprehensive newcomers. If I could have heard someone else's ideas perhaps I might not have been so long in taking the final plunge.

When Ken, my husband, first broached the subject to me of our actually joining a Nudist Club, my reaction was to quickly change the subject after having given a definite 'No'! Nothing more was said for a few days, but I did notice that nudist magazines started to appear and were left on the reading table in the lounge, but were just as hurriedly put away out of sight by myself. Good heavens, what if a neighbour or friends should appear while they were lying exposed there. And a worse thought, suppose relations should drop in. Later on when I started reading these magazines I found that this idea was suggested in the hopes that reluctant would read these ideal magazines, and perhaps through the advice and other readers' ideas and experiences would make themselves soon join a nudist club.

Talking to Women

About two weeks later, Ken and again asked me to join the club, and after a lot of discussion including the fact that my figure, which seemed to bulge in and out at the wrong places, wouldn't even be noticed, plus that I intensely disliked meeting other people, and as to having to talk to them, well that was something I really shied at, I decided that there was perhaps no harm in going along. Surely nobody would make me strip, and then if I didn't like it, well there was no need for a second visit.

The outcome of it was that Ken applied for membership to the club, before I could change my mind, and we received a reply with the news that we were to attend a meeting and meet other members. Knowing full well that this was so that we could be inspected and as on occasions like this I used to find my voice fast disappearing, I just flatly refused to go. Ken went, giving them an excuse for my absence that I was at the doctors. Apparently he met with approval, as we were invited out to the club the following Sunday.

After keeping my fingers crossed all week that it would rain on Sunday, we awoke to brilliant sunshine and after an early breakfast away we went. All my attempts at delaying our getting away had failed dismally.

Finally we arrived at the entrance and with my inside curling up, we drove down a beautiful driveway thickly lined with kauris and rimus. This scenery helped take my mind off the ordeal ahead, but it wasn't long before we came to a house with cars parked in the grounds. Knocking at the door, but receiving no reply, we were wondering what to do, when a tall red-headed man appeared and heaven forbid, he was clad in his birthday suit. My reaction to this vision? Thank heavens I had been nursing for years. We were informed that the crowd was down below and were shown the path to take. We then proceeded down a long winding track again through beautiful ferns and trees. Eventually we heard the sounds of running water and people talking and knew that we must be approaching the club grounds. Coming into a clearing, we saw four men talking while watching a woman busy mowing the lawn. This idea we later learned was to help build her figure. The men-folk were all dressed, while the lady sported a cardigan over her birthday suit. By this time the sun had decided to retire, although the day was still warm. After introducing ourselves and leaving Ken to do all the talking, the men-folk said to have a look around the grounds. Silently I had been admiring a natural swimming pool and waterfall. Away we went along another path and came out to a further clearing upon which was the club house. Duly admiring the grounds etc., we decided to return to our hosts.

The men, meanwhile having decided that the weren't suitably clad, and therefore might give us newcomers the wrong idea, had stripped off, and were busy working themselves. They didn't like us to think that their women-folk did all the work around the place. After more discussions etc. with me still saying nothing, we were invited up to the home for a 'cuppa', and so we met the owner of the grounds. He had apparently been out in the garden when we first arrived. Not wishing to outstay our welcome we soon said goodbye and away we went.

Naturally Ken's first question was, "Well, how did you like it?" and didn't i feel like stripping off? My reply was that it was alright. A favourite saying of mine, if I am not to sure of anything.

To Ken's delight the following Sunday was again good, so of course for our day's outing we headed for the club. In no time at all Ken was stripped off and helping with the work, while I just stood on the sideline and watched, fully clothed. I'm afraid this state of affairs continued for the next couple of weeks, much to Ken's disgust. Then having to undergo a slight operation gave me a further excuse not to strip.

However, I knew that sometime I would have to take the plunge, and the opportunity soon arose when we discovered that one weekend we had the grounds to ourselves. I stripped much to Ken's approval, vowing that as soon as we heard sounds of someone approaching I would dress. So engrossed were we in a game of tenikoit, that I didn't even hear anyone coming down the pathway, and therefore had no chance of dressing when the couple arrived. When everyone else started appearing on the scene, they were amazed, but pleased I think, that I had finally taken the plunge.

Since then, I can honestly say I have never looked back, and now even strip before Ken, and nearly always find myself the last to reluctantly dress when the time comes to be homeward bound. I often wonder what held me back when we first joined the club, and especially knowing full well what the naturist club has done for me I am amazed that it took me so long to take the initial plunge. I have completely forgotten the worry about whether my figure will be noticed and as for conversing, well, I know that some people have mentioned that they wish I would return to the good old silent days, but this I hope, is just in fun.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking those members of the first club we joined who helped me so immensely with their friendliness and tact. We have now left that club and have travelled south, where we immediately joined up with another club, and have again found plenty of friendliness there too.

If anyone has a similar story to mine I would be pleased to hear from them. It wouldn't necessarily have to be published in our magazine, but would always come in handy to show a newcomer. Real names wouldn't have to be used either, just perhaps your initials would do.

Time is getting short, so I must sign off, but I do hope that these women folk who need just a little convincing will write to me. Just address you letters to Joan Treanor, P.O.Box 6359, Wellington.

ANOTHER ONE-PARA HEALTH HINT.

Bob Gilmore of the 'Auckland Star' used our last health hint on how to stop getting sun burnt in his column, "Give and Take", so here's another one on

HOW TO STOP GETTING LUNG CANCER IF YOU'RE A SMOKER.

Every time you take a cigarette, make two small pin holes on each side of the cigarette (that's 4 holes in all) about ½"

from the end that you're going to put in your mouth. That's all. The idea is that this cools the smoke and that it's the hot smoke that gives you lung cancer. You can forget about filters, they're no good; in fact, they just collect the hot fumes better! This method was recommended in a British medical journal, republished in a Swedish Magazine & New Zealand papers, please copy!

AUSTRALIAN SUN CLUBS IN ACTION.

By Frank King, Director of 'Woodlands', Sydney, and Editor of Solar.

This has been one of the most progressive and successful years for naturism in Australia. When Sunray - the best known sun club in Melbourne was closed down late last year, it was feared that it might cause an unavoidable setback for naturism in Victoria as well as in Australia. The loss of this fine club in Melbourne only challenged the sincere naturists in Victoria to throw their enthusiasm and cooperation in some practical schemes. A new enthusiastic club has been formed in South Australia. They call it TINDO - the aboriginal word for "sun". There are signs that some more sun clubs will be formed in Western Australia.

Woodlands - being the oldest and best organised sun club in Australia at the moment has lately been very busy accommodating and entertaining visitors not only from Victoria and Queensland but also as far as South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, and even New Zealand.

It is a pity that Simon and Eve, being on their voyage from Auckland to Perth could stay at Woodlands only one day. Their slides, showing the magnificent views of New Zealand scenery as well as very enjoyable sun club photography, including even the latest slides about the 8th National Rally was very well received and enjoyed by members of Woodlands.

The most successful and colourful event at Woodlands was the Inter-club Volleyball Tournament on the 13th. Mar. 1960. Five clubs were represented at this huge sports gathering at Woodlands. The attendance was over 200 people. A beautifully designed trophy was fought for by volleyball teams from Sun-Valley, Rosco, Heritage and Woodlands. On the same day swimming races and other sports activities took place. The Woodland's team won the trophy but it was not an easy job as all the visiting teams, particularly the Sun-Valley team (all six-footers!), were in excellent form.

To cover this event in the daily press a well-known Sydney journalist was invited to spend a day with us. It was his first visit to a sun club and he enjoyed his stay (from 10am. to 5pm.) tremendously. He even joined us for a swim in the pool showing no more concern about being without duds than the rest of us.

A very nice write up about about our volley-ball tournament was printed the following Tuesday in the "Sun" - one of the most conservative newspapers in N.S.W. The article can be looked upon as a small victory in securing our reputation in the eyes of the general public. We all hope this event is only one of many to come. We are looking forward to many more naturist gatherings to take place in Australia in the months and years to come.

Among our visitors we had an ex-Kiwi,* who commented that our first inter-club volley-ball tournament was at least as well-organised as one of your National Rallies, and he thought the moment had come for naturism in Australia where we did not need to look back anymore, but just go straight ahead. We sincerely hope that one day even Kiwis might send their volley-ball teams over to Australia. For the time being we would like to assure our heartiest welcome to anyone who might be coming the "Aussie-way" from N.Z.

* What's this 'ex-Kiwi' business? - Once a Kiwi, always a Kiwi!!! (Review Staff.)

The Junior Section

T H E    J U N I O R    S E C T I O N.

By Ken.

Hello Youngsters,

The news is very heartening indeed, with encouragement from all quarters for our venture. Perhaps the most newsy news is that one club has actually formed their teenage group, elected their own President and are well on their way to success.

Just after my last announcement and circular, the Canterbury Club organised an election among their teens. For a couple of weeks, notices and novel ads, such as using bare brown backs for signs, notified all and sundry that "Sunday Feb. 7th., a Teenage Meeting and Election" was to be held. The day duly arrived, the meeting held and a President Secretary/Treasurer and two committee members were elected. Thus, Wendy is the first Junior President in a club in New Zealand, with Dennis to help her as Sec/Treas. and Carol and Christine as committee members. I have persuaded Wendy to write a piece for the Junior Section, so further on you will find her letter.

The activities of the Teens at "Pine Glades" (the home ground of the Canterburyites) has been at high pitch, with games, swimming carnivals, picnics, tournaments, tenikoit ladders all combining to fill the teenagers and younger with pleasant thoughts about THEIR club, which indeed it is.

Now, other clubs, let's se some action in your direction. Even if you have only one or two Teenagers, elect a President, write to me and share in the news and fun that is to be had.

How about it???

C.S. & H.C. Junior newsletter.

By Wendy (13), Junior President

Dear Juniors,

Our club recently added a new page to the history of nudism in New Zealand, by forming a Junior Section complete with President, Secretary, and Committee, and I can tell you, it makes us feel quite important to have our own little group within the club, and to plan new interests for ourselves. We all love going out to the club for the day, but it used to be a bit boring at times, with Mum and Dad, talking to all the other grown-ups, and keeping us off the volley-ball court because we might get hurt by the adults. One of the first things we asked for was an hour to ourselves on the games courts, and we GOT it, with some coaching from the parents. You've no idea how we have improved, especially at tenikoit, and of course we are practising this very hard, because we've been promised that the two best Junior players will be given a free trip to the Wanganui Rally to represent our club.

We are going to hold our own socials, too, as we've always felt left-out when Mum and Dad went to a club social, and we couldn't go because they always got home too late. Recently we had a wonderful trip across the harbour to Diamond Harbour for the day. We all had such a good time that we're raising more money by selling mushrooms and holding guessing competitions for another trip, perhaps to Arthurs Pass in the winter, or even another club, to meet the members of other Junior clubs, and we do hope your juniors will come to visit our club - we'll certainly give you a good time!

We now have our own swimming races, and Bill is teaching the the learners to swim, and Ken showed us how to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in case anyone falls into the pool. It makes a big difference when you feel you can be some use at the grounds, and we like to show everyone that we can work just as well as the grown-ups when something needs doing.

We'll all be glad to hear what your juniors are doing, so please write to us, and perhaps we can use some of your ideas. We hope you find, as we at Pine Glades have done, that although it has always been great to feel free in the sun at the club, it is twice as good with your own Junior Section, and you can plan all sorts of exciting things to do.

Fresh Air

By Jim W.S. & H.S.

If some dark, airless city street was opened wide

A door; and they stopped, wondering, outside,

Into a sky, blue, fresh and cool,

There was the native bush, a starry pool,

An old rough house, and surroundings lovelier

Than a city park, because there was

No sign to stop their happy wandering feet.

There was a noisy creek, complete

With stepping stones - their walking had been done

On shores where all looked on.

Each day was life as they

On a clean sun bank that smelled as sweet as hay.

It all ended so quickly, but they went

Back to city drabness with new content,

Sturdy and strong and younger than before,

For they had learned to love the sun once more.

Club Notes

Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc. (Members.) Box 2792, Auckland.

The club now issues a newsletter monthly following the monthly committee meeting; any clubs who would like to know of our doings are invited to ask for a copy. A few stamps to cover postage would be appreciated, though you would get the newsletter for free if you reciprocated!

Our Visitors' Day was a decided success and we are well satisfied with the new members who have joined us since then. We think they feel quite well about things too. Subsequently we had a visit from 'N.Z. Women's Weekly' and had high hopes of seeing ourselves in glorious print and so on in march. However, we can now relax. Story is, the Editor-in-Chief (currently in Japan) has to approve the articles, so publishing date is more likely to be June!

Cooler weather does not seem to be affecting attendance very appreciably but is persuading people to get cracking on some work, and a good thing, too.

Socially we have to report that a pantry afternoon was held for Helen and Norman who are to married at Easter. In fact, by the time you read this they will be married if not settled.

Kaurimu Sun Club. (Proprietary.) Box 15, Glen Eden, Auckland.

We held a meeting early in February and decided to wind up the incorporated club and revert to the old set-up. A small committee was appointed to assist Eric as secretary/treasurer. We are convinced that we can make it quite a club along those lines for we certainly had a bigger and more alive club in those days than there has been in the last year or two.

Wanganui Sun Club. (Members.) Box 410, Wanganui.

Interest here is being maintained and with the addition to our members of several new members plus several more prospects in spite of the approach of the shorter days and winter months we are encouraged to maintain our efforts and further bolster the goodwill of our club. Although the next National Rally seems a long way off, time has a habit of passing very quickly, so we are even now working with a will to improve our facilities for the comfort and pleasure of those who make the effort to be present at our next National gathering. Among what we hope will be improvements will be a new lawn for games etc., a new and bigger pool for the little ones, better parking for cars, more room for tents, while of course for evenings or inclement weather we have the hall and also there will be a marquee. All in all we hope everyone will make early plans to be present, for we really expect the biggest Rally yet held in New Zealand.

Wellington Sun & Health Society Inc.(Members.) Box 6359, Wellington.

While enthusiasm is to be commended, it is unfortunate that we did not realise that it is a big job to build a swimming pool. The contract has turned out to be larger than expected and consequently we have to apologise for announcing an official opening and then having to postpone it. However it is better that we have the work completed and also be reasonably sure of the weather, so an announcement will be made next season. Meantime the work on the pool is steadily going on, the efforts now being directed towards the surround and the piping. A building to house the filtration plant, showers and toilets is being planned and landscaping of the area is being designed to harmonise with the surroundings. The kiddies area is being developed further and the club house is sporting more curtains, bunks, panelling and paint.

A well-attended half-annual meeting agreed on further clearing and levelling behind the club-house and that, in conjunction with tree planting, will divide the labour force during the winter. The social committee has evenings arranged for the last Sunday in each month right through until December.

Canterbury Sun & Health Club Inc. (Members.) Box 1823, Christchurch.

If you are good at the slasher, do well with the rake or are the local champ with the axe, call in at "Pine Glades" in the next few months... you'll e assured of a warm welcome (in both senses, for we're burning off, too!) and a cup o' tea. Looking at the nice wide fire break we have around the place, you'd think that the members have been flat out with energy, but really it was only a bull-dozer that did it... mainly 'cos we want to get cracking with the tree planting, pool painting, clubhouse maintenance and such like. So activity at CSHC is like the beehive, with hints of deals in real estate and power coming on.

On the social side things have been just as busy and and just as merry. Film evenings, socials etc., have kept the Social Committee on the go and they have managed to scrape up some £.S.D. too, for lo and behold, they have told the Works wallahs that they can erect facings and curtains in the Clubhouse with the money... a nice gesture!

Of course you've all heard that we now posses a brand new Youth Group (the Pine Glades Teens) complete with president and committee. Since their election, they have worked wonders with the youngsters and they feel now that "Pine Glades" is theirs, too! By the time you read this report, we would have had our Annual meeting and probably a change of Government to boot. Whoever is in the driver's seat, one and all can be assured that CSHC will continue to forge ahead as usual! Don't forget, if you're down our way, do drop in...

Otago Sun & Health Club. (Members.) Box 2058, South Dunedin.

The main news to report since the last, is the erection in quick time of the clubhouse. Just as we got permission from the landowner to put up a building we recruited Ray to our ranks. Full of practical enthusiasm, Ray drew up plans and in no time got material to add to what we already had, and doing the bulk of the work himself, soon provided us with a nice clubhouse. Up on a small terrace, it has spacious windows overlooking the pool. At another spot down by the creek Alec and Irene have built a little log cabin for themselves. Our newspaper advertising campaign of the past season has not produced any spectacular gain in membership, but it has given us valuable experience and we intend to continue it next season. Altogether it has been quite a successful season.

Southern Sun & Health Club. (Members.) Box 486, Invercargill.

Following a difficult period, we called a meeting recently, where all joined in a free and frank discussion and finally we came to an amiable understanding. The past is now over and we look forward to progress and unity. Now with everyone participating, we have had a bulldozer in and cleared a car park and quite an area for a sports ground and children's playground. The job was expensive but the club is paying half the cost and our secretary the remainder. At the present time the club stands at 16 adult members and some interested, with plenty of children.

RESULTS OF JUNIOR ESSAY COMPETITION.

For our first venture in national junior competition, we have stepped off to a good start, all entries being worthy efforts and encouraging for the future. The judges in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland have carefully studied them and feel pleased at the response and wish to congratulate all the young people who were interested enough to enter. The trophy will be presented to the winner at the next National Rally and we hope to see as many of the other entrants as possible on that occasion. It is with pleasure that we announce that the winning essay, "Why I Like Nudism", was sent in by Carol, aged 14, of Christchurch. Hers was a carefully prepared essay, neatly arranged and thoughtfully presented.

The judges would also like to high1y commend Rache1 of Wellington, aged 10, and Christine and Marion of Christchurch, aged 12 and 13.

The winning essay will be published in the next Review and if space permits, we will be glad to include as many of the others as possible. Well done, juniors.
