WELCOME

TO 1990

After a very eventful Annual General Meeting of the New Zealand Nudist Federation I'm back for my 10th year as Editor, together with Frank Murphy, as Business Manager, looking forward to a great year for the Naturist.

At the beginning of a year of celebrations it seems appropriate to inform our new and remind our older readers/nudists alike how the Naturist operates.

Every year the position of Editor and Business Manager (like all positions on the N.Z.N.F.) are voted on at the A.G.M. The winning nominees hold their position for the proceeding year. The Naturist, for this year as has been the case for the last nine years, is operated by two people (the Editor and Business Manager) on a volunteer basis only - we receive no payment for our time.

Because our positions are unpaid we rely for a significant part of the content of this magazine on nudists throughout New Zealand and overseas. As you can see this policy gives us a kaleidoscope of writing styles and topics.

All profits from the sale of the Naturist are returned to the clubs in New Zealand to help them improve their facilities. This profit figure now stands at $10,000 (amazing when you consider that 10 years ago the Naturist had ceased publication because it couldn't pay its way).

Another new benefit of a positive cash flow is now our ability to offer some remuneration for major articles and photographs that we publish - a first for the Naturist.

Take the initiative and take our money - let's make 1990 a great year for the Naturist.

AIMS EVER TO THE FORE

By Norm Wilkinson

In a recent guest editorial by Mary Weston compulsory nudism was discussed in response to the increasing practice of wearing clothes in our clubs. There is no denying more and more nudists are adorning themselves, particularly the young. What is worse perhaps is the wearing of underclothes by the not so young.

Whilst endorsing the need to preserve our own standards and principles, to enforce nudity is a serious mistake. Similarly "clothes optional" is a knee-jerk response which will not produce one new member.

Both these trends should be resisted vigorously since they are based on a false perception of the practice of social nudity. If we pursue these concepts what we will lose is the cornerstone of all that makes social nudity such a valuable asset to our health and sanity.

To use any sort of coercion is a denial of a basic human freedom and freedom is one of our watchwords. However attractive such a rule might seem, compulsory nakedness is just not practicable. Who will decide when it is or is not appropriate to wear some clothing and how much? It seems reasonable that if a person joins a nudist club and remains clothed at all times, then that person should be questioned as to their reasons.

This approach should be sufficient to maintain the integrity of clubs in NZ without becoming totalitarian.

Recently an interviewer asked me, "what can you do in a naked state that cannot be done while wearing clothes?"

There are a couple of things, but that is another mess of pottage.

The answer is of course not a lot, but whatever we do is so much better without clothes. The clothes optional idea is not new, it split the British Nudist movement in the 1920's. It is I believe the very antithesis of all that is best about our club situation here in New Zealand at present. The problems faced by nudists due to the greenhouse effect caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and increased UV radiation are overstated for the following reasons.

We are at less risk of skin cancer than your average NZ farmer, bowler or tennis player.

Nudists, while carefully acquiring an all over tan gain some protection, but not much it must be said.

Last year 200 people died of melanoma in NZ. Compare this with deaths directly or indirectly, from excessive smoking, drinking, overeating or simply driving a car.

Dispelling the idea that nudists spend the hottest part of the day laid in rows in some obscure ritual as their only pursuit should be our aim.

Publicising and practising the things that make the family of NZ nudists very special people will improve our position.

Bend with the wind. Do not be swept away with it.

The benefits of social nudity are a healthier, saner, more purposeful existence. We suffer less stress related disease etc. Most importantly is the principal of equality between sexes and races and class. Social nudity is the removal of barriers posed by these artificial creations of the mind of man.

More accurately, it can and should be.

It is an unfortunate fact of life in our society that even simple things have a price.

The social consequence of being a nudist not withstanding, I believe increasing costs are a greater threat than the lack of ozone.

Members who leave, become inactive, or prospective members who do not join for financial reasons are on the increase. The convinced nudist does not count the cost, but how do we become convinced if denied the experience.

We should aim to attain a balance between a simple life which does not threaten our environment or others and a costly, stressful pursuit of wealth and possessions.

This nudist believes that NZ nudist clubs provide some of what we need to achieve this balance. If a club develops, however, to a point where the cost required to maintain a high standard becomes a major pre-occupation of the members then the whole point is lost.

Keep our aims ever to the fore.

The Event

You can say that Teena does not go out to shock but she is such a natural person that wearing comfortable shorts would be far more logical for her than wearing restrictive skirts.

Natural for Teena is not just confined to dress. She had been a member of a family in which nudity was as natural as eating breakfast or dinner.

"I had always wanted to join a club for social nudity but until recently, the opportunity just did not come' she said.

Eric shares the same views so when the chance came in late 1989, they grabbed it.

Natural also applies to Teena's sporting prowess. She not only showed natural talent in playing indoor and outdoor bowls but she displays the same skills in league, volleyball and soccer (at which she is a goalie in spite of her 1.57cm stature).

As a volleyball player at the rally, Teena helped the North Island team beat the South Island.

As a member of the Palm-Nui Women's team, Teena helped threaten the strong Auckland women's side which took first place ahead of Palm-Nui.

TEENA

Teena of Wanganui Sun Club is wicked!

Lest anyone hastily jumps to the conclusion that is a harsh judgment of the "Personality of the Rally" at the 1990 Wellington naturally, the showpiece of the 1989-1990 New Zealand Naturists' Year, let me declare now that "wicked" is a compliment.

Wicked equates to the more conservative "excellent", "terrific", "great" or the more modern "cool", "fab" or even more current "rad".

In every way, the 28 year old mother of three dominated the rally at fiveacres.

Teena kept a low profile during the first two days of the rally when Wellington turned on its typical uninviting weather.

But even as the clouds hid the sun and the amount of H2O which kept Fiveacres green would have been more welcomed in Ethiopia, Teena gradually made her presence felt in the never ending games of indoor bowls played in the wisely built hall of the Wellington Sun Club.

The slip of a girl - or lady if you like - did not appear to be anything more than a pony-tailed youngster capable of being a useful player.

But a conversation with Teena soon revealed her depth of knowledge of the game. Little wonder then that Teena - with the benefit of extended practise on strange

mats - not only proved her skills against the best to win the open singles but left everyone aghast that she did it in her first year as a member of the Wanganui Sun Club and making her debut at a rally.

However, her triumph should not have been surprising to those who knew Teena better. The irony was that even her fellow club mates did not know her or her partner, Eric, that well, they were such new members.

Had former New Zealand bowling champion and representative, Peter Belliss been around, he certainly would have set the records straight.

An Aramoho Club mate of Teena's, Belliss says of Teena: "She's a good bowler but she gets a little funny at time, playing a forehand with her right hand and then playing a backhand roll with her left hand".

Teena exhibited no such eccentricity in her indoor bowling, at the Rally at which she was more than adept in Wanganui Club play. She also did not raise any eyebrows with her dress at the rally. Her dress had also been the subject of Belliss' insight on Teena.

"The guys love her at the club but the women don't exactly show the same enthusiasm. While the other ladies bowl in their traditionally calf-length skirts, Teena shows up in shorts which brightens the day for the guys, young and old".

  The Event

Photos: Doug Cousins

She was their best player in the combined side and one or two more like her would have seen the final placings reversed.

Teena would have played other events as well but tenniquoit and singles mini-ten just had to be flagged away because of the time factor.

A relatively new convert to mini-ten, she nevertheless showed potential when she played mixed doubles with Eric and displayed the same promise in table tennis.

Ever ready to learn, she bulldozed well-performed mini-ten player, Murray of Palmerston North, into giving her some coaching and playing mixed doubles as her partner.

Personifying the eternal complaint: frustrated in doubles by a partner who poaches almost every shot, Teena had her own back at a later social.

In an impromptu act, Teena showed her talents as a comedienne (look out Kylie Mole) when she gave a particularly graphic and accurate impersonation of offending partners as they rush in to cut off shots intended for their colleagues.

Complete with grunts, swishes and some muffed shots, Teena had her audience in fits of laughter which was shared by Murray. Where were the official video cameramen when they were most needed?

By the time you read this, club members of Palmerston North will have been exposed to the irrepressible Teena during the Wellington Anniversary Weekend. Palmerston were to have held their Mini-Rally, and Teena had threatened (sic) to attend.

At the meetings during the rally, there was talk about the declining membership in clubs. Clubs are made by the people who make up the membership. With newcomers like Teena to the naturist movement, any doubts about the continuing popularity of club membership can be quickly dispelled.

NATURIST NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Compiled by Roy Cox

Ireland

It has often been said that what Irish Naturism needs, in order to flourish, is a very good summer.

A recent radio poll in Ireland suggests that there is a potential market, with 77% of women saying they would go topless if it was practiced on the beaches.

You may ask then why it isn't practiced on the beaches. The easy answer said the editor of Irish Naturist is that everyone waits for somebody else to set the example rather than be the first to do so themselves. It is the same with full nudity.

Good weather helps though.

USA

Bare With Us -

A Nudist TV Programme

This Spring will see the premiere of 'Bare With Us a video magazine "covering" the clothes optional lifestyle in California. Initially the programme will be released on cable TV.

Bare With Us will cater primarily to the great American public who have experienced the joys of skinny dipping or nude sunbathing in the privacy of their own backyard, or have heard about the existence of nude beaches, and don't know where to turn for more information. The programme will explore the many sides of clothes optional lifestyle, with guest interviews, directions for trips, coming events and more.

Bare With Us is sponsored by the Public Relations Team of the Western Sunbathing Association.

Art Exhibit draws enthusiastic response

You would expect that a figure drawing show at a nudist camp would be BARE-ly successful. Well the show held at Timber Trails Sun Club in Pennsylvania certainly surpassed those expectations.

Three days before the entry deadline, the organising committee were in a panic because they had only received six entries. By the end of the deadline weekend, however the panic had shifted to "How will we get all these works displayed to their best advantage?"

Representing 30 artists, 87 entries came mostly from the local area, but mailed entries came from New Jersey and Virginia. The works were catalogues and hung with artistic care.

Notices were distributed throughout the local community and were displayed with unexpected enthusiasm by local businesses. More notices were distributed via members to friends and work colleagues. Press releases were mailed which resulted in good publicity.

Young members of the club handled the car parking and traffic flows admirably. More than 150 people attended the exhibition including folks who took the opportunity to check out the nudist camp.

Even buyers were evident and eight pieces were sold on the first day. Throughout the week more visitors came to "The best setting for a Gallery in the Harrisburg area" as one leading local artist called it.

Remembered by club members is the positive atmosphere as the complimentary comments continued along with the mandate to "Do it again next year " Bigger and even better.

Now which Australasian Club will be the first to tackle such a project?

Germany

In Germany, the birthplace of the organised nudist movement, the police have given up enforcement of the public nudity law where nude sunbathing is widespread. In the public park in Munich, despite grumbling from their more conservative elders, young nudists sunbathe in the nude with impunity, and tolerance of nudity is now approaching that of their Scandinavian neighbours to the north. Germany in the past has been governed by social democrats which have a history of toleration of dissent, including toleration of nudists.

Norway

European tolerance of nudity is highest in Scandinavia. Tourist brochures for Oslo the Capital of Norway, advertise the location of swimsuit optional beaches in the city environs.

Sticker Tells All

Now showing up on vehicle bumpers throughout the west is the new WSA PR Team-produced sticker that says "NUDE IS BARE-ABLE."'

The result of a brain-storming session during a meeting last Spring at Glen Eden, the cheery yellow sticker is being distributed by the team through WSA PR Chair Fran Flesher, to individuals and at a deep discount to clubs who find that it is a real money-maker.

In addition to the bold black letters carrying the slogan, the bumper strip included reference to the Western Sunbathing Association and gives the WSA PR Hotline telephone number 619-325-NUDE.

Wedding Bells

At Rotota

By Graham Macgregor

Club members Darren and Delwyn chose to have their wedding at the club grounds because of the natural surroundings and their families living nearby. The forty guests were told that it was a nudist club but they and the wedding party would be clothed as the reception was to be held at a local hail (sighs of relief, no doubt).

The day was dull, threatening rain and cool. The guests - and a nervous Darren - gathered by the gate, not sure what to expect. We had a group visit, by about 20 A.O.H.C. members, who were all invited to witness the ceremony. The marriage Celebrant led us over the lagoon camp area and when Delwyn arrived, performed a short, simple, beautiful ceremony, just right for the surroundings.

We then invited everyone over to the clubhouse, where I took photos with the lake as background. Again we told everyone that this was a nudist club but it didn't deter anyone they all still went. I noticed a number of discussions between guests and club members, talking about the club and the grounds. The wedding party, guests and invited club members then left the grounds to go to the reception.

One couple from the wedding guests returned the next day and applied to join the club. We think this is the second wedding at a New Zealand nudist club. We at Rotota Sun Club feel pleased and privileged that Darren and Delwyn chose to share their special day with us at the club grounds.

We wish them a long, happy and healthy married life with many happy hours at the Rotota Sun Club.

 I.N.F.
NEWS      CORNER

By Jim Christopherson

Why Are We All

NATURISTS

We are all used to being asked why we wish to be naturists. We can say we enjoy it of course and for some people that reason is enough, but most of us actually believe that in some way it does us good. We claim to be more healthy, and more psychologically well-balanced, because of our acceptance of our bodies.

If that is true, there should be some way of proving it, which implies unfortunately that there must be a way of disproving it too.

Furthermore the research has to be carried out by someone who does not have a vested interest in proving the benefit of naturism. Or if we carry out the research for ourselves, we must use methods which will ensure that any bias will be identified and excluded.

Some research may have already been carried out, but in order to make use of it we have to know exactly where it came from, so that we can quote it. Often we hear of research through press cuttings, but cannot make use of it because we cannot cite it properly.

This is where federations and their members come in. We are in the process of setting up a database of research about the benefits, and dangers if necessary, of naturism, and related topics such as sunbathing, and the sports we play.

More generally we want to know about the psychological effects of nudity, and its place in society today. If members send us copies of reports we can trace the original publication, and we can then make full use of them, or, if necessary, prepare appropriate responses.

One topic we are currently looking at is the danger of skin cancer caused by excessive exposure to the sun. There is conflicting evidence on this and it is therefore important that we have the fullest possible information not only to help our members, but to advise federations on how to reply to any argument put forward that naturism is in itself dangerous. We hope to produce a clear and objective response to this matter before the next Congress.

There is also a need for more research into the effects of naturism.

The problem is that proper research is expensive, and it is unlikely that the organised naturist movement itself could fund a project on a sufficient scale to produce appropriate conclusions.

However, federations and their members may well know of foundations who might be prepared to provide the necessary money for a study to be done, given an appropriately planned proposal.

It would be, after all, far more relevant than some projects that are funded! If any reader knows of such a foundation, or even a company or corporation which might sponsor the research, we would be very happy to hear from them.

There may well also be very useful smaller projects which could be undertaken from existing resources, so ideas for research of any sort would be very welcome.

I look forward to hearing from you, whether you are sending information or ideas. We are still a small movement. We need to work together.

WELLINGTON NATURALLY

White Herons Greet A New Decade

by Edna Barnes

"What a fitting omen for our rally" were the words of National President, June Campbell-Tong. The 1990 commission symbol, The Kotuku, (White Heron), being the symbol of the rally - not one but two were seen flying over Fiveacres on New Years Day. What a fantastic start to a new decade for all nudists, whether you were there in person or in spirit.

This was a rally of beginnings and communication. It began back in February 1989 with a rally committee of 15 who planned and must have thought as the date came nearer, are we going to succeed, as all rally committee's must think. A new shower block was added to the already good facilities as was a toilet block at the back of the clubhouse. They also added a new miniten court surface. Attending the rally one might have thought how smooth things must have been for the committee - not so; headaches in the breaking down of the pool pump just two days before the rally started. The only way to get the spare part was to stop the person who could supply the part leaving for their holiday on time. The special 1990 stems from France and the bum towels from Taiwan were held up until three weeks before the rally was to start. Only minor problems, but I can guess it had someone on the rally committee getting hot under the collar!!

The information given from the beginning was excellent and what a great idea 'bum towels'. The separate children's printed programme must have been heaven sent for the mum's and dad's. I am sure, like myself, the only time one saw their child or children was for them to be 'fed and watered' and to check the programme. There was horse riding, eel catching, rock painting, a zoo visit, adventure trips, roller skating and so it goes on. The air castle was supposed to be supplied for the children but I have a sneaking suspicion that the adults, when they were allowed to play in the castle had more fun than the children and hearing the

comments of the children about my mum or dad frolicking I wonder what generation the castle was brought in for.

The welcome by President, June was the beginning of the rally and with that the announcement of the engagement between Sharon and Michael of A.O.H.C., another beginning. Communication was very much in evidence in both open forums held. 'Lets come out into the open as nudists and clubs' came out loud and clear with the first forum.

"Going to the races' wine and cheese evening - on some occasions the riders were bigger than the horses but they still won - not being a horse racing fan I do tend to wonder!!

I do however, have it on good authority that the P.N.S.C., had a well organised syndicate going.

The rain stopped and the sports continued with, at times members being very intense, but walking around and observing, the communication still continued, even if it was in connection with a point in miniten or the ball going the wrong way in volleyball. The competition was healthy and defeat accepted with honour.

The bierfest - voices were on form for the night - and the words could be clearly heard many miles over the tree tops. I am sure each member present will treasure their stems and how many ladies managed to keep their 'hearts' intact?

  The Event

Photo: Doug Cousins

On the third day members enjoyed an evening of bowling at Petone which gave most members an early night! The 1990 Bali - the costumes, the early settler Wellingtonians, the French Akaroans, what thought had gone into all the costumes. H.B.S.C., of course, had to be different with being aliens of the future. The hail matched the feelings of those present and the band kept everyone on their toes. Throughout the evening time was allowed for communication and the beginning of friendships. The new decade appeared and I like everyone present, didn't want to be anywhere else but at Fiveacres.

As dawn and the new decade broke some members were retiring to their beds and some were making their way to the sports activities, if those members had been to bed or not only they knew. Even Doug Ball did his early morning run.

The Percy Cousins International 1990 Ethnic Food Festival was blessed with good weather so it could be held on the front lawn. As always, the concert went off extremely well with all the artists receiving great applause.

The presentation of the trophies and the farewell party the following night again with a good attendance - does anyone know who Stefan of W.S.C., is?

The Top Tan competitions were well represented by most clubs and the basis of the competition seemed to be water.

The air was full of farewells the following day with members packing to either go onto other clubs to continue their holidays or going home. Sad, not really, there had been a great many beginnings of future friendships and the communication had carried on throughout the rally to the very end.

Looking at the statistics of the falling membership in clubs and being present at the rally - I tend to wonder why? So many people in New Zealand are missing something in their lives; maybe nudism is the answer - and how do they find out - by us as nudist communicating with the public and beginning to be more open in our beliefs.

Interesting to note, H.B.S.C., alien members at the rally amounted to one third of their membership, including children and of course the reluctant fairy - no prizes will be given for naming him or her but the said person did spend a lot of time with members from P.N.S.C.!

I asked various members 'who were the two outstanding characters' at the rally. I ended up with three:-

Howard - the announcer that seemed to pop up everywhere with his spot prizes and words of wisdom - not to mention that man Sam Hunt. I overheard Howard saying that the poem he recited only took him a few minutes to write. Obviously W.S.C., have another talented member.

"Mac" from R.S. C., - who else would have the nerve to wear that hat let alone stand up and do a skit at the Percy Cousins Trust concert on his own, be painted from head to foot, and in between, and just seem to appear just about everywhere?

Don from Canada, his third rally in New Zealand. He too was painted from head to foot and paraded around the front lawn and seemed to enjoy the who experience. I did wonder before talking to him if he was a member of Fiveacres but soon learnt otherwise. With him being a member to so many nudist organisations perhaps we should feel honoured at having him present.

Barry and his team did a great job and should be congratulated and I think everyone will agree that attended the 1990 rally, even though the weather could not be controlled by the rally committee it was a rally to be well remembered from the beginning to the end.

The Event

As Sophia of "The Golden Girls" TV fame would say - "Imagine if you will," a wide, flat valley floor encased on three sides by fairly steep dun coloured hills (with ambitions to be called mountains) and frequent outcrops of schist rock formations visible in all directions. In this case the wide valley is the start of the Strath Taieri plain and from schist rock develops into fertile farmland leading eventually into the old goldfields of Central Otago.

West of Dunedin an excellent, wide sealed highway, almost traffic free, climbs, dips and swoops through the Maungatua Mountains, past the lonely Clarks Junction Hotel to finally descend into the warmer Strath Taieri valley and its only small town, Middlemarch. About five kilometres short of Middlemarch lies the tiny hamlet of Sutton, once a whistle stop box on the now defunct Dunedin-Cromwell railway line. As the highway crosses the still existent railway line you will find you have arrived at Sutton, a few houses and an engineering workshop, and now gaining fame as the new home of The Orchard Sun Club (exGreen Island, Dunedin).

As regular readers of the NZ Naturist will be aware, a decade ago The Orchard Club suffered the fate of being in the centre of the Abbotsford lands- lip of 1979. Ten years of hard work by dedicated members had built a beautiful, sheltered, sun club in an old apple orchard in a private sunny valley only seven kilometres from the centre of Dunedin.

This accessibility was to be the club's major advantage and also its downfall. By 1979 the club boasted a beautiful 50 x 3Oft concrete swimming pool, two full sized concrete volleyball cum miniten courts, as well as a grass volleyball and teniquoit courts, mini golf putting green, and extensive powered camping and barbeque areas. The fruit tree lined gullies made a natural playground for children of all ages.

The prime advantage was that the club was only a quarter of an hours drive from any part of the main Dunedin City. However this didn't stop a number of town members phoning to check what the weather was like before they ventured out!

The landslip destroyed all these amenities and the work which had built them, and when I say "Destroyed" I mean it literally. The earth was torn asunder leaving gaping chasms and rifts, the club house collapsed, the swimming pool and sports courts destroyed, the main levelled and grassed area raised sixty feet into the air and the whole property moved a hundred feet sideways, damming the creek, wiping out all access roads as well as power, water and drainage.

Defeated, not likely! With the help of the large percentage of members who stayed faithful, co-operation with the Ministry of

Works and the Green Island Borough Council, and eventually a substantial grant from the Mayors Disaster Fund, roading, power and water were restored after new access and filling and ground levelling were completed. Once again a large volleyball, miniten court was built along with a grass equivalent, a para pool installed, a new club house, kitchen and ablution block built, and the club now considerably reduced in membership soldiered on.

In the 1980's the recession made membership hard to recruit and to retain. Another factor working against us was the fact that with the raising of the club grounds basic height level, and the loss of nearly all the large mature trees which once sheltered the grounds from the four winds, the club lost some tranquility and privacy.

But the last straw was vandalism. With the widespread increase in jobless youngsters and general no-hopers we could not keep a window intact, a door from being smashed in, or any items of club property which could be stolen or broken. No doubt many of you have had similar problems and realise the frustration of re-doing jobs over and over again, and the never ending expense.

So once again the search was on for a more suitable property. It was realised that it would entail going out of town and further to travel. Eventually a small seven acre farmlet was located, a buyer found for The Orchard, with much regret, and the move made to Sutton (an hours drive away) at the beginning of 1988. At least we were to have the advantage of Central Otago weather.

Coming down the sweeping highway into Sutton with the Rock & Pillar Range to the west and the Taieri Ridge and Taieri River to our right has a magic effect. The clean, clear country air, warmer climate and absence of people make for a whole new dimension in living. The club property, fenced on the facing side by a not very pretty, but practical, corrugated fence (to save the sensibilities of the locals) has a substantial four bedroomed house in situ, as well as outbuildings which have been converted to sleeping quarters, kitchens, ablutions and social hail. A para pool has been installed along with caravan points, a golf putting green, barbeques, and a temporary grass volleyball court.

The accommodation is fully equipped with beds, mattresses, quilts, furniture, fridges, deep freezers, TV, microwave and electric ranges, telephone and all kitchen utensils, crockery etc. All visitors need is a sleeping bag or bedding, a friendly nature and the ability to relax and enjoy yourselves. As Middlemarch is only about five kilometres away it is a short drive to a well stocked shop, churches, garage, tea-rooms, camping ground, hotel

The Event

The party carried on into the evening and about nine o'clock the locals invited us all to attend their bonfire night in Middlemarch.

Guy Fawkes was well and truly burnt on top of one of the largest bonfires I have seen and fireworks galore went up in smoke. Back at the club the festivities continued and we felt a good bond of acceptance had been established with the Middlemarch community. As if to confirm this a number of locals called at the grounds on New Years Eve and helped ring in the New Year.

After nearly two years in our new abode our energetic President, Kay, tells me that membership has been steadily growing, and our new style of club has met with approval all round. Permanent sports courts and baches are planned for the near future, and this summer sees quite a number of families using the club as their holiday base.

In case you are wondering at us retaining "The Orchard" as our club name, it is not inappropriate, as we can still muster a few plum trees and new plantings will add to our fruit varieties. We welcome visitors, and just to make sure you don't think it is too far to travel, may I point our that with new local government amalgamations we are still within the boundary of Greater Dunedin City (now the largest in the country by land area) and phone calls to Dunedin are still local calls. We love that in a Scots city! Don't leave it too long before you pay us a visit!

and other amenities of a small country town.

The Taieri River is only a couple of kilometres distant and has good swimming, boating and fishing. If you are a winter sports fan the Rock & Pillar Range has a fine ski field, and makes good four wheel drive country in the summer.

We have had to adjust to being a different type of nudist club. No longer the swift dash out to the club grounds for a quick swim during a hot summer's day lunchtime, or just an evening barbeque. Now we must make a more leisurely planned outing for the day, or a weekend, or as long as you wish. The club makes an excellent base for holidaying members to use when exploring Central Otago. West, through Ranfurly, Alexandra to Cromwell, Queenstown or Wanaka. North to MacRae's Flat (scene of a massive gold mining venture), through Danseys Pass to Oamaru and return via Palmerston. Or, if you're a tourist, south and east to Lake Mahinerangi and Dunedin.

Our members have been much impressed with the friendliness and cooperation of the local people. By making use of local tradesmen and businesses we have been accepted as part of the community. Invitations were issued to many people with whom we had come in contact, as well as local leading lights, to attend an official opening of the grounds on 4th November, 1989.

Although some were too shy to attend we had a good turnout of local people, members, and some of the luminaries of the nudist movement. The NZNF President, June Tong, with husband, Bevan, attended from Wellington, along with Roy Cox, Wellington, who seems to be able to arrange business to suit appropriate occasions.

Norman and Beryl Wilkinson graced us with their presence from Christchurch, and Norm generously allowed himself to be conned into speaking for nudists on National TV. (This was a bonus for us all, unexpected, but due to the good media groundwork done by Mavis Robertshaw). A contingent arrived from Southern Sun & Heath Club (Invercargill) to give further support, for which we can always depend on them.

A member of the Otago Area Health Board and holder of a number of committee positions in the area, Mrs B. Bagley, graciously gave a welcoming speech at the official opening of the club grounds, and then all retired to the barbeque area and social hail for drinks and a slap-up meal.

Nature's Harmony In The North

By John Trotter

Sometimes an experience lingers long in memory because of the indelible quality of it. One such experience did more to make me value the true worth of naturism than anything else ever has.

Circumstances caused me to visit a property in a semi-remote area of the North Island. The owner and at the time sole occupier of this farm, was running sheep, cattle and goats without any neighbours within sight or sound. The narrow feeder road, into the homestead, traversed several cattle grids and streams, the last kilometre, a winding climb, was a really steep slope. Few people travelled here it seemed.

Around the homestead, amongst the many majestic pines, the shearer's quarters, outbuildings and another dwelling made a magnificent setting - appealing in all its natural beauty. Summer was in its glory, as was my friend, who, although his work seemed never ending, was clothed every day in his very best suit - his birthday suit.

Tall, trim and as browned a man who ever sat in a saddle. Quick, sure of foot; generous of heart and with a knowledge and assurance that instantly stamped him with unquestionable character. The call of nature, in his circumstance, was a simple expression of complete oneness with nature and obviously his deep brown, healthy, body was a product of work - not leisure or laziness.

During the time I spent there I was able to don my best suit also, up early in the morning all I needed was a pair of boots to protect my feet from thistles. Wandering nude around the hillsides, breathing in the healthy, pure fresh air. Drinking in all the beauty of the solitude, with only the sight and sound of animals around and about me. Rain, though, was never far away but what a delight it was to scamper around the homestead lawns, naked, in the rain at dusk. We hoped for a fine tomorrow.

The next day, between showers, a couple of other visiting naturists and I

pitched in to help round-up the goats.

I was able to cool off in a crystal clear stream, during a waiting period, the feeling was magnificent, that kind of life truly makes one content - to drive, nude, several kilometres up and down the homestead road with my teenage companion having the thrill of his first driving lesson in my car was another tribute to the setting.

Who could calmly walk in the nude to a well filled garden to gather their choice of home-grown veges for an evening meal?

Who, indeed, could run naked around their house in the rain and not be impressed by this uninhibited richness of living? What better kind of life can there be than this true life of the most natural naturist?

When homeward bound, from those big hills, I realised that the special qualities found there would stamp a vivid memory within me - whatever else changed in my life.

FeatherLooking Back

Extracts taken from Issue No. 12, March 1959 of the "New Zealand Naturist" then called
"The National Review" compiled by Frank Murphy

EDITORIAL

Another National Rally has again proved that the New Zealand Naturist Movement is a very healthy organisation. Members have travelled long distances with an enthusiasm to enjoy the hospitality of another club as well as to participate in the more serious business activities. These efforts have often been considerable and a true reflection of their interest and support of the movement.

The unity of the New Zealand Movement is something unique in the world of nudism. It seems to be the only country in which differences of opinion have not been sufficiently bitter to split the membership and cause other organisations to arise. The conflict between national organisations within the same countries has been so severe that often the nudist movement has suffered. New Zealand is fortunate that it has been spared this experience.

Strength through the united efforts of all clubs and other interested members can safeguard against the danger of breakaway factions. The sacrifice of some views which might create a rift is often worthwhile to ensure the unity of the movement. A divided voice is no voice at all to express the nudist point of view to an unsympathetic public.

A solid united front can continue to make even greater progress in the years to come. The National Rallies give recognition of this unity and can truly express the national nudist point of view, a national movement now numbering sufficient to warrant serious public consideration.

CLUB NOTES

Auckland Outdoor Health Club

We held our own Rally in Auckland on Anniversary weekend, the last in January and very successful it was, too. We were happy to welcome Joan, Arthur and family from Hamilton, Dick from Northland and a party over from Kaurimu on the Sunday afternoon. Colin arranged games and activities for the children in the afternoon

and a barbeque in the evening. This same weekend saw the first visit to the club of several new members. Organisation for the National Rally next January is already in hand. Our own Rally was well covered in 'Truth' whose factual and sympathetic reporting was much appreciated. It is possibly a comment that indicates acceptance of our movement in the community; neither of our metropolitan dailies considered we merited a story. Development of the grounds presses on. Major projects, each handled by a separate team under an appointed leader, are: clubhouse, beautification of the grounds, clearing of camping grounds and parking areas (in an even more convenient and central position than they have been before) and erection of a separate canteen.

Wellington Sun & Health Society

Despite gloomy forebodings the grounds were fully equipped for the National Rally, everything was in shipshape order when the guests began to arrive. We can now relax, conscious of the fact that it was a job well done, thanks to the efforts of the few and the cooperation of the weatherman.

As part of the "relaxing" programme it is now our intention to push ahead with the swimming pool and installation of electricity.

Canterbury Sun & Health Club

The club has now been registered as an incorporated Society. Work continues on the grounds. Our fence building is nearing completion - full honours to Norman whose motto appears to be 'nothing is impossible'. An untiring worker himself, he rallies his helpers and makes miracles look easy. One man remarked to me last Sunday "Well, I shall be glad to go back to work and rest tomorrow - I only shovel coal for a living."

Thanks to Trevor the clubhouse is almost finished. All through the winter he has worked, almost single handed, on the interior and the result is looking most satisfactory. The walls are all lined with plaster-board, cupboards put up, sink in

place and a member, who is a bricklayer, has built an open fireplace faced with Oamaru stone, this is in several colours and the effect is very pleasing.

Otago Sun & Health Club

We're having a quite successful season in the club down here. The weather gods have favoured us very much all through the spring and summer, most members have got a good tan and had one or two burnings. Yesterday and last night were cold and stormy in Dunedin but today has been fine and we've had a lovely day at the site.

During the last we've obtained three new families as members and with the addition of another family who'd dropped out for a couple of years and now rejoined we've had quite a boost to our membership. Today there were 41 people at the site. We have a great collection of toddlers so we will have to get busy and build a paddling pool for them.

Our pool has been very popular during the hot weather. Our first games court has been in use for Teniquoit playing, although it is not quite all levelled yet. The footbridge over the creek has been widened.

Southern Sun & Health Club

The last issue of the Review just missed the exciting news of the formation of, what we believe to be, the world's most southern club. Laurie of Otago sun and Health Club is largely responsible and hence, the first President. Membership, at present, comprises four married couples and six young boys. The club grounds belong to Tom and Rose; Tom is our Secretary/Treasurer. The grounds are well screened with ample room for sunbathing, games court and children's play centre. This will be used until a club property can be found. Reports indicate that the weather is hotter than Wellington. No icebergs or polar bears despite the latitude.

Advertising in two local papers has resulted in some applications for membership.

CLUB NEWS

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

We started off the season with a pleasant visit to the Hibiscus Coast Sun Club. Old friends were reacquainted with one another and new friends were met for the first time. Our hosts treated us royally. They even laid on good weather for us, so early in the season and all. We all got together around the barbeque and had a feast. When this had been well digested, with the aid of the usual liquid stimulants, some of us were induced to play a few lighthearted games. During the egg throwing contest it was noticed that the eggs bounced well off the grass. As one Chinese guest remarked, "They must be made in Tai-Wan." But in the end most of us got egg in the face. Great distances were achieved in the gumboot throwing contest. No doubt assisted by the high aroma of the said gumboot.

Does anyone remember what the weather was like on November 26? To

remind you it was a steady downpour all day. Thank goodness! Like some other clubs, this was our first open day of the season. The local paper published an article inviting the public to visit the A.S.C. The article included a brief description of the club's grounds and amenities together with the basic functions of a sun club. The response was terrific. We drool to think of how many visitors we would have had if the weather had been more kind. We may not have had room for them all.

It was nice to see so many comparatively young couples, many of them with young children, thinking of joining a nudist club for the first time.

Thank you Wellington Sun Club for yet another successful rally. It was well organised and well run, yet still keeping an atmosphere of relaxed fun and friendly competition. Which surely a

rally is all about. We all came away with some useful and lasting souvenirs as well as happy memories. The "Bum- Towels" were certainly an innovative idea. The stems we were all given at the Bierfest will certainly remind us of a throat drying evening which, in the end became the "Pub with no beer' Everyone had a "Flutter" at the races but no one seemed to loose their shirt. Not that anyone would have taken much notice anyway. By the crowded dance floor at other times, everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves.

The "Auckland Agonisers" make no apologies to their audience. You were all warned beforehand!

To sum up. A wonderful time was had by all of us with not the slightest cause for complaint. But we could have done without the singing dogs!

SUPPORTER GROUP

The number of Supporters seeing the naturist videos we circulate among our members is very significant. In this issue I'd like to quote from a member's letter - it's all that need be said.

"I found both videos interesting. I was rather disappointed with the Australian video. It was rather short and only skimmed the surface, however, I would recommend it to people who were considering trying naturism but were a little apprehensive. This video would allay those fears. I would like to have seen more time around River Valley and other Naturist Camps or Sun Clubs.

"The Beau Brummell video was obviously used to put across an opinion but it was done with style, showing the beauty of his own naturist park and other more modern and one could say 'commercialised' naturist holiday spots like Cap D'Adge. His theory makes sense but just goes back to what, in my opinion, is what naturism is all about, that is, if the climatic conditions are pleasant and we wish to, we should have the freedom to take our clothes off, when and where we like - within practical terms.

"Both videos were basically saying that nudity is not sexual or dirty but that it is healthy and normal; they try to allay fears which most people have about naturism - and of course they are correct.

"In a perfect society we shouldn't need sun clubs or specially designated naturist beaches because we could go naked when and where we liked but as we all know, we are very far from that ideal so all we can do is try and change opinions - persuade people that naturism isn't the kinky hobby that most think it is. These videos are an excellent medium to try and inform people this way'

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

My contribution to the Club News in the December 1988 issue was to have been my last, but as no budding journalist has jumped in to take over the job during my 6 months in Europe, I'll have another go at keeping the Bay of Plenty on the naturist map.

Garry and I just missed our club's annual general meeting in August and, consequently, we were quite surprised when we returned to New Zealand in September that we were still on the committee and still P.R.Os. Due to the club's changing the financial year end from 31 August to 31 March in 1990, it was decided to retain the existing committee and officials until then.

We also returned to find new caretakers installed who gave us a warm welcome and who have worked so hard during the past months, whilst we have been more often than not "in residence' to keep the grounds immaculate, the facilities operating efficiently, and the members happy. They have engendered a renewed spirit around the place and it is a pleasure to open the gate and be greeted by smiling faces and a friendly word.

On New Year's Eve, having the services available of a visitor who played the bagpipes, we could not let the opportunity go by of piping in the haggis. Unfortunately, the quest for a haggis proved fruitless and didn't even produce a butcher who had any idea what went into a haggis - I chose to disregard the suggestions given to me by one of our members, so made up a mock haggis which was duly piped in and courageously sampled by all. Holding Scotland and the Scots in high regard, I found the event quite moving and thanks are due to our piper for a great performance.

The Bay of Plenty Club is always ready to welcome guests and our facilities, including the recently completed laundry beside the Clubhouse, are now of a high standard, (but don't expect an automatic washing machine) yet we retain our unspoiled natural surroundings. Individual owners of camping plots have built stone walls where required and planted their site with a variety of flowers, shrubs, herbs and veges. Our chief lady gardener has done a splendid job on the rest of the grounds with a little help from her friends, and our caretaker loves mowing lawns - he must do because he spends six hours behind the mower on grass cutting days - as a result the grounds are a picture.

We would like intending visitors to know that they are welcome to turn up at any time without first ringing (rather difficult when there is no club telephone) or contacting anyone. There is someone there at all times to let you in if the gate is locked and we will always find room for you, but please bring your I.N.F. card.

The Event

We have been delighted and heartened by the visitors we have received this season both before and after the Rally; these include friends from Gisborne, Wellington, Waikato, A.O.H.C., Auckland Sun, Free Beach, Timaru, Christchurch, America and so on. A few of our members hope to travel to Christchurch for the next Rally so we look forward to meeting some of these people again.

Garry and I have a special memory of a night in the Club's hot tub when we joined guests from Wellington and their relatives, who were here on holiday from Holland, in singing Christmas songs and carols by candlelight - at that time the only means of illumination in the hot tub area but we have since installed subdued electric lamps. We sang in English, apart rom my rendition of Silent Night in German, remembered from schooldays, they in Dutch. One of the children asked us to sing our national song and they in turn sang their national anthem - a truly wonderful evening.

With the onset of cooler days the latest addition to the Clubhouse, a Visor fire, should prove its worth. Last year's mid-winter Christmas dinner was a huge success and well patronised so we look to the incoming committee to organise social functions throughout the off season in the hope that interest and support of members during the winter months will be sustained.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

Labour Weekend frolics were enjoyed by both visitors and members with not-too-serious competitions and good socialising. Darren and Delwyn's wedding was a highlight in the club's year and the holidays have had a stream of visitors staying at the club - frequently for longer than they planned! Some mainlanders came visiting after the Rally - it was nice to see you. We hope to reciprocate next year. Trout fishing has not been so popular this year as children's licences are no longer available locally. We are looking into providing this service.

Water skiing has been popular, with a number of us having a go. I distinctly heard the "Nutcracker Suite" after one crash and said some rude things loudly while centrifugal force was separating my arms from their sockets. It was fun, thanks Robin.

Our beach was used one day by about 20 non-members, three generations of one family, for water skiing, they mostly clothed and we nude - no problems just friendliness.

Overseas visitors continue to come, including the second visit of a television actor - the character is well known. He puts on a show for those at the grounds but for obvious reasons we can't identify him here or advertise his visit in advance.

The local visitors are the This that come to feed on the flax flowers. We can be right next to the bush when they land. Beautiful! We are not into promotions but couldn't miss having "A Touch of Irish" to entertain us on the 10th February at our "Late New Year Party". The costs were covered by ticket sales to visitors from other clubs, our own members, our neighbours and a boatload from Orakei-Korako. What a night!

The next function is the Tauranga Hot Pool Weekend 18th - 20th May - the last weekend of the school holidays. The cost will be the same as last year. Information will be available from your Club Secretary or phone Graham at Tauranga (075) 786-693.

It was interesting to note that while Bill's grandson (Orange-roughy) stayed on the grounds his asthma symptoms decreased markedly. Change of diet, activities, environment? Maybe all of them. Orange-roughy enjoyed his stay.

Don't forget, visitors are always welcome at Rotota - contact numbers are in the back of this Naturist.

GISBORNE COUNTRY CLUB

We have, in recent months, suffered several setbacks mainly through lack of members. The workload at the Club has been shared by too few people and all maintenance gradually slipped.

However, on a positive note, we now have new caretakers living on the grounds in a newly built cottage. This has given our grounds an added security along with an electronic alarm system. A winter project was the removal of the barberry and boxthorn hedge which until now surrounded the grounds.

Several full scale working bees by the members allowed us to demolish a surplus building in a forestry block and transport it back to the Club where it became the basis of a new fence around the property. The tin fence does not have the same aesthetic appearance as the hedge but no one seems to miss the pruning or the thorns. The working bees were generally followed by a social gathering with the sauna being the focal point on cold winter evenings.

Our mid-winter dinner was a smaller function than usual but most of our sauna nights were reasonably well attended. The summer season has been highlighted by several successful barbeque evenings and positive signs of prospective members in the near future. Three club families attended the Wellington Rally and they all really enjoyed themselves. Their suntans, stories and trophies made those of us who could not attend very envious and we can only hope to make our plans earlier for the next Rally.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB

Our Club has had a very busy and fruitful season this year. A large contingent of us enjoyed the National Rally and thank the Wellington Sun Club members for their generous hospitality.

We had many visitors from other clubs stay with us. The mini-rally and open days were well attended. With the large and small caravans now completely refurbished, we can now offer accommodation to people wishing overnight stays. There are still plenty of powered sites and camping areas for people who bring their own accommodation. Two miniten courts, hot water, play areas, pools, barbeques and a putting green are available for visitors throughout the year.

Although we lost members who left the district, their numbers were replaced by new members. We are grateful for the N.Z.N.F. promotion packages to help inform prospective members about the nudist movement.

Looking forward to a new clubhouse to replace the existing byre, we formed planning and finance committees to expedite arrangements. We hope to repeat the success of the other clubs who have done well with erecting new clubhouses for members and guests.

FREE BEACH GROUP

Free Beach Group members throughout the lower North Island have been gathering for organised beach outings, undaunted by the long distances they have td travel just to be together.

In December, a special beach day was held at Pekapeka to coincide with the visit of the FBG Secretary, Adrianne, to Wellington for the NZNF AGM.

Eighteen of us turned up to enjoy the sunshine. Our local organiser had rearranged the driftwood to form a low wind barrier enclosing a clear space where we made ourselves comfortable. the baby slept, the kids played in the sea, and some of us went for a walk along the beach.

During the afternoon a small aeroplane made several low sweeps over us, creeping up with the engine throttled back. Bare bodies on the beach are still a novelty in these parts.

Afterwards, we enjoyed afternoon tea on the secluded back lawn of a local member's home. The conversation became quite philosophical and it was hard to tear ourselves away.

The Wellington District Free Beach Group has outings planned for most weekends throughout the summer, backed up by barbeques at various members' homes on days when the weather is unsuitable. Members also enthusiastically support the swim nights being held at the Porirua Aquatic Centre for sun club and FBG members.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB

Allo, Allo! Well not all of us are associated with the French settlement at Akaroa, but those of us that were at the Rally came home to a reminder that The Canterbury Sun Club sure has got what it takes.

The idea of a clubhouse extension has been bandied around for some time, but you should see it now! The "Working Parties" have been non stop with everyone pitching in to do their bit. Over 100 people made the most of the space at the New Year's Eve Party and the "Sport" theme allowed for a good casual atmosphere. The Canterbury club members certainly believe in using their club all year round and the conservatory style lounge extension will be just lovely on those sunny days we so often see during the winter.

Let's not forget the miniten court. The old cracked concrete has now been replaced with a brand new asphalt court. Our miniten players from all over New Zealand will appreciate the assistance of the Percy Cousins Trust who have helped make this possible, not forgetting all the hardworking club members.

By the look of the notice board it's going to be a busy, but social year. Club Championships are to be played fort- nightly with finals at Easter. There's something for everyone and with the ensuing after match parties in the barbeque area (the sun never leaves there 'till late, late, late) it'll be just grand!

How about joining us? We've lots of room.

Finally, the Rally. Dr Who 'n' his fellow travellers will be at the Great Tardis (Time Machine) at Pineglades Mission Control on December 28th. Book your Satellite Site now! More details later.

NELSON SUN CLUB

Our 21st birthday will be celebrated in March and we expect a lot of past members to join us for our celebrations. Looking at old photos of our club grounds it's hard to believe it's the same place. There used to be an orchard where the golf course is!

We have enjoyed the company of many visitors this summer with our accommodation stretched to capacity for most of the time.

The flying fox was almost running red hot with all the young folk taking advantage of our newest facility.

Our social evenings have been enjoyed by large crowds until the wee small hours and some mighty golf (including 4 holes in one) has been played during our regular tournaments.

There has been a few interesting moments involving huhu beetles and orphan birds but mostly people have spent their days enjoying superb weather and friendly company.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB

To celebrate the club's 40th birthday two main events have been held and many other socials and activity days have been associated with the birthday as well.

The Dine and Dance held at the Windsor Park Hotel was a joyous occasion for some fifty members who attended the event on Labour Weekend. On the 19th November the Family Fun Day was rained out but during the afternoon a very nice afternoon tea was arranged followed by a happy hour. Les Olsen, N.Z.N.F. North Island Vice President, officiated and presented the club with a cheque, on behalf of the

N.Z.N.F. President June Campbell- Tong, for the purchase of a golden totara.

After a short address the beautiful birthday cake, made by Daphne, was officially cut by the two senior club officials present; Laurel and Colin.

A team of twenty people attended the Wellington Rally during the New Year and again retrieved the Interclub Volleyball Trophy and the Ladies Volleyball Trophy; the latter trophy being gained with the assistance of two ladies from other clubs - Ann of Gisborne and June of Canterbury. Our members also gained trophies for tenniquoits, swimming and mixed doubles miniten. Well done team. Wellington club must be congratulated for turning on an excellent rally.

With the very fine weather this summer our swim sports, Top Team and other sports fixtures have been very successful.

The beach trip to Uretiti drew a large attendance over the weekend leading to Waitangi Day and the boat trip to Waiheke was most enjoyable. Our sincere thanks to those people who organised these events.

A.O.H.C. is presently hosting David Ball of Heritage Video U.K. and plans are underway for him to video aspects of club life on our grounds and throughout the rest of New Zealand for a feature on nudism in this part of the world. We look forward to the end result with keen interest.

TO CLOSE ...

OR NOT TO CLOSE

By Doug R. Cousins

The recent report that the Northern Sun Seekers Inc. has closed set me thinking on some of the contributory reasons why and whether this could happen with other clubs. I am sorry to say that my thoughts tended towards the feeling that other clubs could get to that stage IF something is not done to try to prevent it. I am thinking of various matters that may not have been considered so far, and quite separate from the present NZNF promotion campaign. We should all remember that a campaign such as this needs to be followed up on a permanent basis. If we don't stagnation and closures could threaten.

So what is the secret? I don't think it really is a secret. It is really a case of remembering the sign which was placed in the sole toilet at the old Northern Club's grounds years ago. It simply read "DO something, don't just sit there". It is a pity our Northern friends did not realise the wisdom of this sign and do something to prevent closure.

And you will obviously ask, what could they do? I would suggest that the solution is simply ADVERTISING. Consider how much must be being spent at present on prizes and sponsorship for the TV programme Sale of the Century. Only this week at the time I am writing this article, they have been talking about one million dollars in prizes. If big business can do that, surely we can shout from the house tops and tell everyone something about our club facilities and amenities. Yes, there could be people out there who would like to consider joining your club, but

they don't know anything about it because you haven't told them. And by the same token you will ask me what the hell I am getting at. That, too, is very simple.

How many of our clubs, especially the smaller ones, tell us anything about themselves in the pages of our magazine, whether in the Club Reports or elsewhere? How many of their members ever write articles, whether about their own club and its special activities or about anything else? When did the magazine last feature your club in the photo pages? That's what I mean - you are not ADVERTISING your club to John Q. Public IN OUR MAGAZINE. Even I have had to find out what various clubs have to offer by visiting them and seeing for myself.

Then we can just as readily ask when did you last have your club featured in the local newspaper, and when did you last have a reporter and photographer from that paper visit your club, and when did you last invite TV to visit your club? Orchard did a good job on TV when they officially opened their new grounds.

In this modern world of big business competition and so many counter- attractions to our "spare" time, it is no use being a Wilkins Macawber. Something might turn up but it is more likely that it won't and then your club could be heading for closure. Naturally we all know about members who drop out for various reasons, as well as occasional notices in the local newspaper. But we need to go further than that and tell more people a lot more about our clubs.

People need to be made aware that a club exists in their locality and what it has to offer so they can then revive thoughts of visiting and perhaps joining. If you stay silent they will never remember unless somebody else reminds them, like Orchard did with its TV feature.

Several years ago I visited a small club expressly to try to help them. I took some photos of their grounds which were to have gone to our magazine and the local newspaper with a story on the club the members were to write. I sent the proof photos to them for releases and their instructions as to which were to be enlarged for publicity. What has happened since? Complete silence. It does not surprise me now to learn that this club is fast heading the same way as our Northern friends. They, like Northern, are suffering from their own idleness.

So what about it folks? "The Lord helps those who help themselves". Advertise yourselves continually in our magazine and in the local newspaper and thus try to avert closure. I specifically mentioned Northern Sunseekers at the start of this article. Can you remember the last time anything about them appeared in our magazine? I recall perhaps 20 years ago a photo of water-skiing but that is all. Not much is it! The Club directory is not enough. People want to know what you have to offer - a gentle inducement for them to take membership a step further and ring your contact member. Try it and see what the result is. The main thing is not to be a Macawber expecting that "something will turn up" - it most likely won't. Good hunting.
