OBITUARY:
GRAEME ANDERSON

Volleyball score

This issue of the New Zealand Naturist is dedicated to the memory of Graeme Anderson who was tragically killed in a head-on car accident on 3 January 1985, while on his way home from attending the NZNF Rally at Gisborne.

Graeme joined the S.A.N.C. in 1978. He was a solo male, who at first impression appeared reserved, although it didn't take long to realise that Graeme was a "doer" not a talker. It was a joy to have Graeme at club working bees - whether it was cleaning out the creek, cutting down trees, mowing the lawns, painting the fence or planting shrubs and trees - his quiet enthusiasm was contagious.

It wasn't long before the club realised that Graeme was an indispensable member and he was encouraged to join the committee with the responsibility for the maintenance and development of club grounds. Planting happened as if by magic, new trees popped out of the grounds. The grass appeared permanently cut. In short the grounds went from good to better to the best we had seen in many a year. A few years later Graeme was unanimously voted into the position of President, a position he held for two years. Under his leadership the club tackled one of its most extensive projects ever, the planning and construction of the amenities and facilities building. This project required obtaining planning permission and hours of research and telephone calls to get the best deals and materials he could obtain for the best prices. Through his ability, determination and enthusiasm the S.A.N.C. soon had a facilities building to be proud of, for it boasts flush toilets, hot and cold showers, a children's bath and a kitchen. As part of the development the club also has underground powered caravan sites and facilities to provide further powered caravan sites at a later date. A major development, since previous to this time members were not allowed to even camp on the grounds overnight. Now, thanks to Graeme's foresight and enthusiasm the S.A.S.C. now has facilities they once only dreamed about.

For most people, the time Graeme spent at the club would be considered a significant memorial. Not for Graeme though, because for the last three years he had been actively involved with the New Zealand Naturist and for the last two years he was the Business Manager. As Business Manager Graeme's ability and reliability was unsurpassed, and without his efforts the Naturist would not be in the healthy situation we are now.

The Business Manager does his work away from the spotlight, which is unfortunate, because the Business Manager and the Editor are a team, without a competent Business Manager the Editor's position would be impossible. The Business Manager is responsible for the distribution of the magazine (8000 copies every three months), the banking, private subscription records, full financial record keeping and all correspondence. Graeme did the work without complaint and his honesty was legendary.

Apart from Graeme's nudist activities he was actively involved in women's hockey in Auckland, where he had just become the President - one of only two men to hold this position. He had been elected in recognition of the work he had done in promoting women's hockey.

Graeme's interest in cricket was well known, his radio was always tuned into a cricket game, and Graeme was actively involved in umpiring games throughout the Auckland area.

He was also actively involved with pipe bands, and at Dulux, where he worked for 45 years, he was widely respected for his knowledge and ability.

Graeme Anderson will surely be missed by his nudist and non nudist friends alike, but his accomplishments will be forever a tribute to a great nudist.

NUDIST YOUTH CLUB

Hi, we're back again.

It all started when we arrived at Tolaga Bay (Rally site) on 27 December. We went to see Ian Fairbrother, to find out where we were to camp. And being the fun loving guy he is, he decided, with help from a few others, to put us in the stock pens. Which they promptly named Aotea Square.

Places on the Rally Site were named after a few places in Auckland. The row of toilets were named K Road, shower blocks Mt Wellington.

After camp was set up the old mob from last year was reunited. Kisses were flying everywhere.

Next morning four of the brave ones got up at 6.30am to go for a short run. One did the short run (Melanie) and the other three did the long one to Tolaga Bay (Karen, Martin, Paul). During the day two members represented N.Y.C. at the General A.G.M. for the N.Z.N.F. Around about 2 o'clock we all decided to go to the beach. Six started the long walk there. But before we got out the gate the lady helping in the shop (in her Oxford) was behind us offering a lift.

We arrived at the bridge, still on the way to the beach. The shop lady started to tell us which was the best place to jump from. So what did we do? Jump (for a laugh). Martin climbed down, but chickened out at the last minute. But after a few minutes, someone jumped in. A deal was made, that if someone didn't jump, they must run around Tolaga Bay nude. "Karen" from Christchurch was that sucker (don't worry, she never ran around Tolaga nude).

Down at the beach, everyone piled into the water, except one person (Robbie). While two were having a sand fight (no names mentioned), two more were drowning. Martin, thinking they were waving at him, waved back. We arrived back at Aotea Square, to have a shower at Mt Wellington, plus to find two prospective members.

Karen, Liraine, Melanie, our would-be cooks attempted to cook sausages. Mel burnt them and left the inside raw. We later discovered the guys were better cooks than the girls. But the girls were better at washing clothes, cause some guys took their washing to their moms to wash. Later that night the girls took half an hour to put on their faces for Welcome Night (trying to impress the guys). Now if you like tea and coffee at 4 in the morning you will do well at the Rally. At least five mad nuts were having tea and talking till 4 in the morning.

Nyc was well organised this year as we had our own sports captain (Paul). During the next few days most members played sports. Our highlight for these four days were "Karen and Martin". This year N.Y.C. won a few ayes.

New Years Eve

Half the members went and danced while the other half played cards??? But just before 12 the other half came for the kisses. Two celebrated their birthdays about 20 days early.

On the afternoon of the 2nd, we had our General Meeting. Sorting our new committee members we talked about the 15 new members that had joined during the rally. They came from Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch.

The rally was wrapped up by most of the members running around giving out farewell kisses and promising to write (this will never happen, as you know us teenagers)?

We apologise to the Nyc members who were looking forward to the Nyc Rally this year. But we weren't that well organised in that field. But we promise that there will be one next year, after the main rally. It is likely to be either in Mapua or Timaru (we will let you know later).

We look forward to seeing the old faces, plus a pile of new ones at the N.Z.N.F. Rally in Christchurch.

WORLDWIDE CORRESPONDENCE CLUB FOR
YOUNG NATURISTS (WCCYN)

Robbert Broekstra

This is to let you know that the WCCYN has well over 130 children now all over the world, who are writing, visiting and even telephoning each other where distances are far and wide.

A second list of boys and girls has gone out this month and attached to it is the first issue of a worldwide newsletter which will come out three times a year, at least. The idea is that the next newsletter is made by children for children mainly, however adults will find naturist information from all over the world in it and can obtain this as well. The newsletter is in English and has news this time from Bulgaria, U.S.A., Holland and so on.

Any teenager that hasn't written yet but would like to be on the next list will receive at the same time the newsletter. What do you have to do to join this correspondence club?

1. Write your name and address down.

2. Your age, what school you attend and what grade.

3. Preference of country, boy or girl, what language.

4. Name of club or beach you visit.

5. Hobbies.

We do have to ask you for a donation for the costs of printing and airmail stamps, please enclose $4.00 in cash (U.S.A.) and mail it to our post office box (N.P.N. Postbus 281 - 2470 AG Waddinxveen, Holland). The reason that we don't ask for cheques is because the Dutch bank charges almost half the amount for transfer costs when it's a cheque.

If you want to contribute to our next newsletter please mail us your articles and photos are also welcome. Tell us about your club or beach you visit, with what countries you write and what you like or dislike at your club or beach. If you have any suggestions lets hear them.

I'll be looking for your letter and articles. In the meantime we wish you a happy sunny nude year.

NATURISM ON THE BIG ISLAND

by Leif Heilberg

The largest of the Sandwich Islands is the one properly called Hawaii, although the whole chain of volcanic islands constituting the 50th State appropriated the name long ago. Original natives of this tropical paradise immigrated from the Society Islands in the South Pacific. They practised naturism on the beaches before any white man ever set his eyes on these isles, and before silly missionaries with perverted concepts of human dignity brainwashed the bewildered Hawaiians into believing their bodies were filthy objects of shame. How convenient when a brother, or friend, of the missionary happened to be a merchant bringing bolts of cloth which, at a good profit, were sold to cover up the proud and beautiful bodies of the Hawaiians.

Today, few Hawaiians ever go nude, and then only on an isolated beach once in a while. The misguided religious zealots, as active today as they were in earlier times, continuously against nudity and even have succeeded in getting a State law on the books prohibiting nudity anywhere in public. Now it is up to Haole (Whites, in Hawaiian language) residents and visitors to press for a change in State laws or at least for a modification in its application. Precedents of long-time use of certain beaches by many naturists lead to local acceptance and non-enforcement by police of the anti-nudity law. Financial interests in development of naturist's resorts on private land and beaches with private access, is another way of expanding the practise and acceptance of naturism in the islands.

Both approaches have been attempted on various Hawaiian islands, with varied success. On Oahu, the only beach where nudity is possible is at the North Shore Naturist Park. On Kauai, only a couple of isolated beaches offer any chance to disrobe. On Maui the situation is even worse since a development project was started next to Makena Beach and all but made nudity impossible anywhere on this heavily developed island. Molokai is almost deserted, and one could easily be nude in many faraway corners of the island; however, there are only two acceptable beaches, and they already have hotels on them. There remains Hawaii, the Big Island, and although it is a financial backwater and farthermost away from Honolulu (35 minutes by commuter jet), the very lack of excessive development, combined with its quiet charm, makes Hawaii a natural for naturist hopes in the Aloha State. In the tropical zone of the North Pacific, winds usually blow from the North-East, carrying with them rain in the winter season. Most tourist developments in the Hawaiian islands therefore favour the South and the West coasts when the topography otherwise so permits.

On the Big Island a bit of naturism is practised on the East coast close to Hilo, the county capital. The World Guide to Nude Beaches (obtainable from The Naturist Society, P.O. Box 132, Oshkosh, WI 54902, U.S.A.) gives directions to most nude beaches on the islands - as well as the rest of the world - so that is your best start in planning a Big Island naturist vacation. You may want to keep in mind, however, that around Hilo the rain comes down in buckets, and very frequently so, keeping the entire area very green but also very moist.

The Western side of the island is known as the Kona coast (you must have heard of Kona coffee) and here it is drier and warmer (mostly 80-85 °F.) and thus, more pleasant for tourists, including naturists. Kailua is the biggest township on Kona, and a few miles north of town is an airport (Ke Ahole Airport) which recently was extended to accommodate larger jets flying in non-stop from the U.S. mainland.

Hotels are plentiful and relatively inexpensive, car rental is usually included with tour packages to outter islands (i.e., not on Oahu) or is available for a few extra dollars from the hotel, and eating places are both sufficient in numbers, and come in all price ranges.

You find a relaxed, laid-back attitude among most locals, including Kama'ainas (old timers) as well as newer residents and tourists. Some Haoles are drop-outs, enjoying the "grass" (similar to Maui Wowoi) while tuning out civilisation's worries. Others simply like the climate and have middle class values, enjoy being productive citizens and hold down jobs or operate their own businesses. Some of these residents directly cater to naturist visitors, like the bed-and-breakfast facility called Hild House, operated by Vicki and Carl Hild. This most charming couple previously organised a small naturist circle in Alaska, and now make visitors welcome on the Kona coast. They experienced the concept while travelling in Europe, and within months after the appearance of a small notice in Clothed With The Sun (quarterly magazine of The Naturist Society), they have already had many naturist guests and are receiving on the average of three enquiries per week. That proves the demand for such facilities, and the Hilds now try to induce other local naturist landowners to set up stand-by B-&-B facilities to take care of visitors as the demand expands and contracts with the tourist seasons. The Hilds have a small coffee plantation, a garden with mangoes, papayas, and avocados, and keep a few chicken for fresh eggs. Carl is a scuba dive master and can take his visitors out for diving. Vicki and Carl also act as guides and informants, letting visitors in on the best spots for dining, shopping, sightseeing, naturist beaches, etc. Do contact them at "Hild House", R.R. 1, Box 145, Captain Cook, HI 96705, phone (808) 328-9458, and tell them that Leif recommended you to stay at their place. They may then offer you a special bonus when you become their guest.

Many hidden spots exist on the Kona coast where nude sunbathing is possible, from Green Sands Beach in the South up to around Mauna Kea hotel in the North. At Paradise Acres near Captain Cook is a black volcanic sand beach. In the town of Kailua itself, the small beach and pond south of the old airstrip is now being developed and thus no longer available to naturists. However, three miles north of town is the best known and oldest naturist beach in continuous use on the Big Island. It is Honokohau Beach located immediately to the North of the yacht harbour by the same name. For decades this has been a favourite spot for skinny dippers. In the old days, local police used to raid the beach ever so often, issuing citations based on the anti-nudity law. That changed when Dr. Bruno I. Keith settled on the Kona coast in the late 1960's. With three doctorates in the field of education and linguistics, and many years of teaching experience behind him, he became a school master in the locality. Professor John, as I used to call him at the Sequoians Nudist Club in California in the early 1960's, was a veteran nudist and it didn't take him long to find Honokohau and its naturist beach. When he started going there on a regular basis, the police raids stopped. Why? Because, under old-Hawaiian law, a school master holds automatically the title of police major. it wouldn't look good for the cops to arrest one of their own, and one of high rank, just for skinny dipping. So, Professor John, or Bruno as they call him here, became King of Honokohau Beach. Later he established a group known as Friends of Honokohau Beach.

Bruno is getting up in his years, Over 70 now, but he is still seen all over town, greeting friends and visitors, and handing out free gifts of fruit from his garden. He is also a regular for the delicious sunday brunch at King Kamehameha Hotel. You may contact him at: Dr. Bruno I. Keith, R.R. 1, Box 74-5094 Palana Road, Kailua-Kona, HI 96704, phone (808) 329-2137.

Honokohau Beach is only one of many beaches where locals go nude, but for visitors it is one of the best, since access is fast and easy (10 minutes walk north along the beach from your car parked at the north fork of the harbour). The nude beach is about a quarter of a mile long, of yellow sand, with a lovely pond behind it and the mountains farther eastward. A short hike beyond the north end of the beach will lead to Queen's Bath, a brackish fresh water pool in the lava fields where the Alii (Hawaiian royalty) used to bathe. Have a friend who has been there before take you the first time, or you could easily miss the right direction.

During the week, at least 30-40 locals visit Honokohau beach each day, mostly showing up in the morning and staying for two to three hours before returning home and, presumably, going to work in the tourist related services. Weekends more people show up, also some families, while weekdays mainly couples, singles and small groups of adult friends come to enjoy the beach. The beach is safe for all ages, since the water is warm and only slopes gently to greater depths, and no strong currents or high waves threaten this beach section. For the time being, this beach which you can find by yourself, and those others which the World Guide as well as local naturist friends will show you, are the mainstay of naturism on the Big Island.

If you have a bit of money and want to go sport fishing off the Kona coast - even in naturist style - you are in luck. A naturist friend who manages a condominium, has a boat right in Honokohau harbour. His brochure reads like this: A Kona Adventure, loin Capt. Al Atkins on board the X-T-Sea for world famous Kona sport fishing! Pacific blue marlin, yellow tuna, mahimahi and ono supply the thrills; we provide the experience and equipment.

Half Day $200, Full Day $300, (share available, max. 4 people). Choose from tournament or light tackle, lures or live bait. For information and reservations call 322-2222 or leave a message at 329-4366. Free in-town pickup. Post Office Box 1325, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.

Al's wife Judee is a real estate broker (G.R.I.), and the only naturist realtor on Kona. She says, "Service is My Motto - People are My Specialty". Use the same phone numbers as above, and Judee will be at your beck and call. Al and Judee's buxom 18 year old daughter Lisa is also a naturist, has had modelling experience, and is taking a course in cosmetology in Kailua-Kona. You will enjoy meeting the whole family while doing business with them, whether sport fishing, looking at real estate, or otherwise.

Somewhere within 45 minutes drive north of Kailua-Kona ground is being broken for a condominium, and word is out that naturism is going to be allowed here. A reliable source of information asked me not even to reveal some of the details I already know, as it could interfere with the interested parties' progress toward this desirable goal. So, at this time, nothing more will be said about it. But the concept would truly be a first for Hawaii. On Oahu the North Shore Naturist Park is somewhat rustic, if nice and convenient for anyone from Honolulu, Waikiki, or anywhere on the island for that matter. And since most flights to the Hawaiian islands go to Honolulu first, where inter-island connections have to be taken from the domestic airport next door, most visitors come first to Oahu, see the sights of Waikiki, etc., and would as naturists go to North Shore Naturist Park as the first choice. For those fortunate and provident enough also to decide on a visit to one or more out-islands, the Big Island - and in particular the Kona coast - beckons as a favourite destination. As outlined in this article, naturists will find places to visit and friendly contacts to communicate with, and should the naturist condo become a reality in the near future, you would have yet another attraction to pull you inexorably to Kona. We will keep you posted!

FERNWOOD RESORT

My wife Linda, daughter Patty (17) and myself are members of Fernwood Resort, which is about 100 miles southeast of Kansas City. The club was started in April of last year and we have over 125 members as of this year. It is over 80 acres of virgin woodland. We have an above-ground swimming pool, we have just got our water and electricity installed and have got lots more work to do.

If any of the clubs in New Zealand would like to write to us, we would like to correspond with them. Please find enclosed pictures of the camp where people can pitch their tents. This area is about 200 yards from the main camp. The pictures shown are from the first camp grounds. Will send some of the new camp in the spring when we can return.

THE NETWORK ANNOUNCES NEW
WORLDWIDE BED & BREAKFAST REGISTRY

When we formed The Network in 1979 we had no idea it would grow to an international correspondence group of over 500 members in 24 countries but it has. We had our first Regional gathering in Kent, England in June 1984 with another slated for the same time and place July 27, 1985. Another interesting phenomena has been that, in addition to corresponding with each other and exchanging photos, Network members are beginning to personally visit with each other all over the world. With this in mind we decided to create an international Bed & Breakfast Registry listing naturists around the world willing to offer a room and a meal to other travelling naturists for a modest fee.

Bed and Breakfast arrangements have been popular in Europe for years as a means to beat the high cost of commercial accommodations such as hotels. With costs ranging from $50-$150 per night for a motel room it makes sense to stay with a naturist family when travelling if possible.

The way it will work is as follows: Any naturist family (or single) willing to act as a host by offering a room can send $1.00 and a written request to be listed in the Registry to the address below along with their name, address, telephone, what type of accommodations they are offering, restrictions (if any) and other pertinent information. A sample listing might be:

   Veal and Leanna Johnson
   1234 Ubenstrasse
   Bon D-1040
   West Germany
   Telephone 12-23456
Room: 1 bedroom, with double bed
   Meals: Breakfast or Dinner (optional)
Restrictions: Single females or families only, no pets.

   Available - Jun-Aug only.
Other: Close to public transportation, nearest naturist club 5km, spa available.

The registry will be announced in nudist publications all over the world and to obtain a copy send $1.00 and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the address below. All arrangements are to be made between the host and visitor. The Network is merely acting as the intermediary to get the parties together. All arrangements are to be on an advanced registration basis only and the hosts have the right to make any restrictions they wish and to refuse accommodations to anyone.

As always we encourage nudists/naturists all over the world to join The Network and communicate on a personal level with nudists/naturists in other countries.

To join The Network send your name and address along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a request to be put on the list and you're in. You will be placed in the next directory and receive a copy of the current directory. There is no cost (other than your time and postage) to be a Network member and the rewards are substantial. Send all requests to:

   Veal and Leanna Johnson
   14029 Pine Lane
   Humble, TX 77396
   U.S.A.

One world of caution - The Network is neither a swingers contact list nor a lonely hearts club. If either of those are your primary interest then this organisation is not for you.

We look forward to hearing from you. Take care and... keep it bare!

MEET THE NATURALISTS OF 26 COUNTRIES IN YOUR OWN HOME

THE NETWORK is a worldwide naturist correspondence group whose purpose is to provide a medium of communications between naturists in many countries. We have been in existence since 1979 and have grown to over 450 members in 26 countries. We exchange information on the naturist scene via letter writing, photos, tape cassettes, phone calls, and even, in some cases, personal visits. We are also working on an online computer version of THE NETWORK. We held our first Regional Gathering in Kent, England in June of last year and another is planned for July of 1985. We also publish a newsletter written by the members in January and July of each year. If you are interested in meeting naturists from all over the world, we cordially invite you to send a self-addressed envelope along with a request to join and three International Reply Coupons to:

MT CARMEL ACADEMY

We would like you to notify your readership of the following opportunities:

New Zealanders visiting Vermont this summer can camp out "au naturel" on our 16 acres (including beautiful, clean 12 foot deep pond) or deck out in their sleeping bag inside and have access to our bathroom facilities, if they attend the new nude beach we are establishing at Lake Willoughby in northeastern Vermont some summer weekend. Those interested should write us in advance.

We are looking for a governess/housekeeper. If a responsible New Zealand girl over 18 is interested in this opportunity to experience America, this may well be the ideal arrangement. We will give room and board in exchange for child care/housekeeping services.

A NUDIST AND PROUD
OF IT

Veal Johnson

"By and large, the man-in-the-street has never met a 'nudist'. They are strange people, he thinks, who live behind high wooden fences. They never wear clothes, relying on crutch-length beards and healthy exercise with beach balls to keep them warm. To earn their daily bread, the ladies pose for H & E while the men, of course, take the pictures. They are all obviously totally immoral... is our own opinion of our movement that much better though? How many of us are proud of it, proud to be naturists and proud to tell the ignorant they are wrong? It's a funny thing, but the longer people are in the movement the less daring and the more complacent they get." - Alan McCombe, I.N.F. President, in a recent editorial in British Naturist Magazine.

Mr McCombe and nudist leaders all over the world have been telling us for some time now that we should be proud of our naturist lifestyle and unafraid to tell others about it. I agree wholeheartedly and I AM proud I am a nudist but why? It's not because the nudist movement is an elite group that "marches to the beat of a different drummer". Nor is it because nudism is an extremely healthy past time giving everyone incentives to live healthier lives. We are not altruistic in the sense that we exist to help others or raise money for charity. Our movement is not a self-help group which actively seeks to advance our cause and protect our members because, rarely are we successful in our dealings with authoritative bodies around the world. So then, why are I proud to be a nudist? Very simply, I believe that we, all of the nudists and naturists in the world, have something very positive and very important to offer the people of the world. You see, we have learned that beneath our trappings of wealth and symbols of society we are all human beings in the Family of Man.

I challenge any of the political leaders of the world today to line up a group of French, German, English and American citizens all nude and try and guess what their nationalities are.

Nudism crosses geographical, political, socio-economic, and even religious boundaries and for that reason it is a very powerful tool in the hands of the people of the world. it is a tool we can use to force our leaders and governments to recognise that we are all in this world together as human beings first. Did you know that naturism is alive and very healthy behind the Iron Curtain in countries like East Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia, etc? Where religion, science, and governments have all failed to bring about world peace I think we nudists have the ability, no the obligation, to do our part. Too grand and glorious a scheme you say, well maybe, until you realise that all great social movements in history have begun at the grass roots level. People like you and me believing enough in their philosophy to work for change in their own backyards - that's all it takes to turn nudism from an inward-looking elitist movement into a force for world peace. It's time we stopped groveling in the dirt waiting for governments and society to change to accommodate us.

Think about it. We have the power to do some real good in the world if we are only willing. All you have to do is the next time your friends, neighbours and co-workers ask you where you go on weekends, tell them and tell them why. Be proud that you're a nudist, you are a step ahead of the rest of the world.

NATURAL ACCEPTANCE

Michelle J. Handler

Naturism is not the extremist approach to body acceptance as it is often thought. In fact, naturism is the middle of the road approach to a healthy mind about a healthy body that has puritanism on one side and pornography on the other.

Naturism, sitting squarely in the middle, feels both approaches to our human bodies and sexuality are wrong. To exploit the body, to use violence as sexuality and make all nudity sexual, is as bad as to shame our minds into believing our bodies are dirty, our sexuality to be suppressed and our bodily functions to be hidden away...

Naturism is a movement for far more than the right to go naked. It is a movement toward acceptance of our bodies, as they are, without adornment, without Calvin Klein or Dior. It is a movement towards open acceptance of the functions. It is a movement toward bringing the body out of two closets - that of shame and that of exploitation - and bringing it instead to a natural place.

PHOTO DISPLAY IN LIBRARY

"T". H. Latimer
President. American Nudist
Research Library Inc.

The American Nudist Research Library has on display more than 85 large photos in colour and black and white. They represent many of the clubs and their activities of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States and Canada.

They are of great interest to young nudists and old nudists alike. The young nudists learn to recognise faces and places, and the older nudists love to reminisce. It is a very popular addition to the Library.

We also have photo albums dating back to 1932 and they are classics in the art of photography and exceptionally interesting as a record of the nudist movement.

Another great addition to the Library is the display of the Hall-of-Fame plaques and identifying pictures. Out of the 19 presented, the Library boasts of having 12 of them hanging on the display wall. We appeal to the rest of our great honorees to consider sending your plaque to the Library to join the others and complete the collection. Forrest Emerson was the latest to send his in, for which we are indebted.

From the first of this year we had 954 visitors from all over the world and our guest book boasts many V.I.P.s both in nudism and without. We have been contacted by college and university libraries for information and have had several professional librarians visit us here. Everyone has been immensely impressed with our collection.

The Library has just added another 70 volumes that were bound in hard cover for preservation. Up to now we have had a wonderful response to our appeal to be a Friend of the Library, but just as our costs for binding have gone up our appeal has slowed down. We want to take this opportunity to ask all nudists and naturists to please help the Library with donations of your nudist books, magazine or memorabilia or send a $25 donation to have your name engraved on our plaque in the Library as a Friend of the Library.

We thank all of you for your support and your interest.

CLUB NEWS

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

Featuring among our activities over the last few months were two camp-in weekends at the club - the first over Labour Weekend. Our intention was to combine this with a working bee painting the outside of the club house. However the weather had different ideas proving to be wet and windy nearly all weekend. We really felt the benefit of our club house with the table tennis table, pool table and indoor bowls being well used. The highlight of the weekend was when "Madame Beryl" brought along her Tarot cards and told our fortunes. The rest of the day was spent comparing notes and wondering whether they would come true.

Our second camp-in weekend was for our Christmas party early December and the sun did oblige us this time. The most memorable part of this weekend was the groaning of the tables under the weight of the food brought along for our communal barbecue dinner.

Then the rally at Tolaga Bay where we were the third biggest contingent with nearly a third of our members attending. Apparently our own club grounds were rather lonely just after Christmas. We came third in the open volleyball competition for the third year running! Although we didn't achieve great sport honours we had some very creditable runners up and a lot of fun competing. One of our members had a go at everything including darts and tenniquoits which she had never played before! She was greatly pleased with her performance in darts, managing to win a few games before being knocked out.

Just last weekend a party from our club attended the sports weekend at Auckland Outdoor Health Club which we all enjoyed but the moral of the story is our above member who found she knew lots of people from other clubs just by playing sport against them at the rally. Just goes to show the benefits that come from getting in and having a go, even if you know you won't be winning.

A.O.H.C. Inc.

December is usually a busy month for the club in a social sense. However in the weeks that led up to Christmas a big effort has being made to complete the finishing touches to our new toilet block which was constructed in conjunction with development of the new caravan area. In this direction we have to thank the "A" team for their zeal in getting things done. December 16th saw the complex officially fully operational. Fourteen caravans have been accommodated with water and underground power and access is by a ring road.

Well, the New Year holiday period that followed has been very warm with settled conditions. Camping members appeared to be fewer this year, perhaps some are taking the opportunity to visit other clubs. So far we have had members from Northern Sunseekers, Wanganui, Wellington, two couples from Switzerland and not forgetting of course Ron and Anne from the U.K. who have returned once again to spend four months with us. We hope you all enjoyed your stay and may we see you again.

About 60 members journeyed to Tolaga Bay for the National Rally, experiencing exceptional weather and acquitting themselves well on the games courts. Our interclub sports day, was held over Anniversary week and attracted visitors from South Auckland, North Shore and Auckland Sun. Some spectacular volleyball games were played, particularly in the finals. Saturday night saw the clubrooms with a social and on Sunday evening a communal B.B.Q. was arranged and a pleasant weekend was apparently had by all.

Over recent weeks A.O.H.C. youth have been working around their "hut". A nice profit of $250 from a recent social they ran has enabled them to move to constructing a patio which will serve as a sun deck and possibly setting up a table tennis table also. Further work is also envisaged when finance becomes available. All in all a very encouraging start to the new year.

The quest for new members goes on. Enquiries before Christmas were better than in previous years; an advertisement in local papers brought numerous replies. This has been followed up by an open day February 2nd and 3rd with Top Team activities included.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB

It was pleasing for the Wanganui Sun CLub to see the good use made of all the improvements at the club grounds. A larger than normal number of visitors, especially campers, were seen both from other New Zealand clubs and from overseas visitors. We had a number of families including two families from Germany, two Swiss and an American couple from overseas.

Always a cosy club set in pleasant rural surrounds the improved facilities have meant more members using the camping area and so enjoying the company of the many visitors.

The summer got away to a very good start with a record number attending the Guy Fawkes night and many stopping over the weekend. It was good to see so many camping so early in the season.

The next event was the children's Christmas party with the adults party the same night. Once again a good attendance. Although many members travelled over the holidays, the grounds were never empty.

The children's 'funday' and the club miniten championships attracted much attention and were a great success. Two open days held this year and we hope that future open days may be even better as people realise all the club has to offer.

It is hoped that more local families will join a club that is certainly progressing and giving to its members good value for the modest subscription it has been able to maintain.

Watch for our usual busy winter program which is in the process of being formulated. Remember Wanganui, the extra friendly club.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB INC.

Our club has welcomed a fantastic summer season here in the Manawatu. Sizzling hot, windless days have seen many seeking available shade or cooling off in the pool.

Twenty-seven members visited the Tolaga Bay Rally and had an enjoyable time. Our sporting achievements are not worthy of mention, but ours was the only volleyball team with children participating; something we are proud of.

Several of our members visited surrounding clubs on the way, and met with hospitality in each and every one.

We extend an invitation to all nudists to visit or stay on our club grounds and make use of our facilities. Charges are moderate and an NZF/INF passport will admit you to Lake Downs.

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

Over the last few months a number of significant changes have taken place in our club.

The almost total completion of our new ablution block has enabled many of our members to camp overnight at the grounds.

Members that have taken advantage of our camping facilities by camping in groups have enjoyed a New Years Eve party, a silver wedding anniversary and a birthday. Good times all of them!

Along with good times we have also sustained the bad.

The sudden loss through a tragic accident on January 3rd of one of our dearest members came as a shock to us all.

Graeme will be sadly missed by all who knew him. A flowering Tulip tree has been planted in the club grounds and a plaque is to be placed in the kitchen of the new block as a memorial to a well respected, gentle, man.

Our grounds are looking great. They are a credit to all those members who spend many hours maintaining them. Well done! South Auckland is perhaps not renowned for their sporting ability but certainly notorious in their enthusiasm.

This was brought to mind at A.O.H.C.'s recent sports day. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Winning one volleyball game and actually gaining a few points in others. Our miniten and teniquoit players also had fun playing their games.

Our club membership is increasing healthily with very enthusiastic feed-back from new members.

We are planning to have a prosperous and happy new year and would like to wish all other clubs the same.

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

Hello there - yes we are still around, despite a very quiet year. A belated happy and prosperous New Year to one and all is extended from us down here in our "Garden of Eden". On the social scene things have been relatively quiet over the past year, but with some new blood pumping into The Orchard. Maybe things will be more fruitful and we can anticipate a better yield with plenty of work and activity increasing our potential. As the old saying goes 'many hands make light work', the grounds still need a lot of attention.

Our Christmas social was held on 10 December - the theme being 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.'

Everyone was dressed for the occasion and the people carrying off the numerous prizes provided laughter and entertainment for everyone. Our thanks are extended especially to outa' town people who arrived to make this occasion a successful and memorable one.

Our sauna and swim nights are netting a host of new faces and helps keep the club spirit together during these long winter months.

Our much needed necessity - a club house - is still on the agenda. Lets hope this year sees it off the agenda and onto the grounds.

Till next issue then - a great tanning and lots of everything.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir

There are people of all ages and types attending national rallies so would it not be more appropriate to cater for a wider variety of activities than have so much time and space occupied with so much serious sport? Could a limit be put on the numbers of sports persons from each club entering each event so sport does not become such a burden. This could be brought about by each club or district having eliminations prior to the rally. Perhaps even the main championships be held later in the Summer when contestants had reached their peak and more events held at rallies. The sports championships could perhaps be held at Easter if a suitable all-weather venue could be found?

This would allow for more 'fun' events, cultural pursuits and exhibitions such as art, pottery, a photographic salon, needle work etc. Some demonstrations are often held but more member participation especially by those now less active in sports may be better appreciated and hold the attention of more people than just the sports minded.

The chance of clubs to put on a display of what clubs have to offer visitors was not as well supported by clubs at the Palmerston Rally as would have been thought, but the spectators seemed to enjoy what was offered. This surely could be given another chance at future rallies.

Just food for thought.

Bernie Davy
Wanganui

Dear Sir

Your magazine (1984, No.110) reached me today. I would like to congratulate you on your full-page photo, page 3. Not on account of the delightful pair in the foreground, but because you show, in the background, what naturism is all about - that we are here for every one the ordinary, the handicapped, the normal, the abnormal all of us. The unmarried mother, the widower, the divorcee, the teenager seeking security all you have to do is believe in our cause! And you're there!

All the best.

David
The President
Danish Naturist Union, Denmark

Dear Sir

Thanks for an enjoyable magazine with excellent photographs. I first began reading New Zealand Naturist in the late 60's early 70's, but I stopped reading and subscribing for a few years. Since re-subscribing, I've found a bigger, newer look format.

Doug Cousin's photos are always good - but there are never enough of those ones like Page 18, No. 111, which shows the children enjoying nudism. Surely the more pictures we have like this, the greater the 'family' is stressed. Modern nudists keep telling the public of the 'family' aspects of nudity, yet in the U.S.A. the 'non-family', the 'gays' are welcomed into clubs there! Where then is this aspect in such 'open' clubs?

The club scene (in the longer term) must become affected, the 'family' aspect lost entirely and clubs then will become 'lovers, anything goes' clubs. Sooner or later, both the A.N.F. and N.Z.N.F. will have to face this issue! Where will the honest, average 'family' non-swinging nudists stand then? Will they stand up and oppose the entry of 'gays' or will they just simply follow along like a lot of lost sheep saying nothing?

It is all very well saying that because these people are part of society that they should be in nudists clubs. This to my mind, defeats the whole purpose of what naturism/nudism stands for! The article 'On Hugs and Handshakes' was very true, I've worked at a similar place and what he says is spot on! We do not have enough touching, hugging and kissing today. Man is too busy caring about his own desires and wants, to worry about his fellowman (for the most part anyway). We need to touch, hug, kiss, feel and exercise more. Exercise our hands in the above areas! Cherie Hughes' letter was good, also her comments about pubic hair. We do have the choice, will you stand up and be counted for 'family nudism', touching etc? Or will you shut up and say nothing and allow 'gays' on your club grounds?

Yours naturally
D.J. Ward
Western Australia.

Dear Sir

I was wanting to know why you do not have the names of the clubs under the photos in the Naturist so the readers would know what the club grounds looked like.

Yours faithfully
Paul Neumann

All photos published in the Naturist ore designed to illustrate the social nudist life style und are not designed to promote any club or organisation in particular.

Dear Sir

I have subscribed to your serial because, in addition to being interested in nudism, I find New Zealand a very exciting country (almost, or even definitely, the last great hope on earth).

As I have studied the issues of your magazine, I have become aware of the NZNF Supporter group. To begin, please allow me to compliment New Zealand nudism on this programme, which allows people to 'fringe' on organised nudism even though they cannot join a club.

I would like to make a suggestion: Why don't you generalise this scheme, making it open to people all over the world? What you would be doing is providing a focal point for all people, located in whatever countries, who want to back what you are building in New Zealand.

Take my own case: I am sending in money to the NZN for an annual subscription. I would be very happy to rather send a somewhat larger sum, for which I would still get the NZN, and in addition would gain the satisfaction of playing a tiny part in the New Zealand naturist movement.

With best wishes for the triumph of the clothing- optional way of life in your country and mine, I am

Sunnily yours,
