EDITORIAL

The theme this month is survival, or to be more specific, the continuing economic struggle to continue publication of this magazine. We regret having to increase the price of this publication but it was necessary to remain economically viable. The increasing support we have received from the general public over the past two years, gives us confidence that our readers will "stick with us".

Recent articles in mass circulation magazines have indicated a greater acceptance/participation in nudity at public beaches. This is fine and good, and is a part of our campaign for the acceptance of social nudity at appropriate times and place. We in the movement must not however, become complacent or apathetic, lest nudism in our countries suffers the same fate as Blacks Beach, San Diego, California. There, a well organised, vocal minority, were successful in having an ordinance permitting a nude beach area at Blacks Beach reversed. A contributing factor to this "conservative" victory was the apathy of voters who did not bother to go to the polls. The result was a tremendous set back to the San Diego, nude beach committee, a responsible body of citizens who had worked many years for acceptance of the nude beach concept.

Which brings us back to survival. If nudism is to receive greater acceptance by the public, then we must all stay alert to protect and further our aims and objectives. Think about it.

COUNTRY CLUBS OR MOVEMENT?

- by Hugh Young, Gisborne

The masthead of the "New Zealand Naturist" used to carry the slogan, "A valuable contribution to a healthier world." It was probably wise to drop it; it looked like self-praise. But for many of us, the slogan meant a lot. It meant that we were a movement, going somewhere.

Thirty, twenty, even ten years ago, it was impossible to think otherwise. We faced an uphill struggle against news papers that would not print the word "nudist" in advertisements, councils that tried to block the establishment of clubs, neighbours who misunderstood our aims and our motives.

Today, with free beaches just around the corner, conservative MP's opening rallies and endorsing our aims, and more and more of us prepared to state openly that we are nudists, it would be easy to think the battle is won.

But what was that battle? Was it for freedom of dress for nudists alone behind our fences? Or was it - and is it - against the nudity taboo itself?

We know first-hand that it is no great thing to see each other and be seen in the nude; that it does not lead to uncontrollable bouts of lust, nor reduce our worth as persons. We know too that the embarrassment of first getting undressed in company is much greater in anticipation than in retrospect.

Is the battle over before everybody (except the unteachable) knows this? Not that they themselves need to strip, just be unconcerned if someone else does, when it is not meant offensively or exhibitionistically.

"My freedom to swing my fist ends where your nose begins."

In my view it is not swinging the fist to sunbathe, mow the lawn, paint the roof, even to go shopping in the nude, if that is more comfortable. But, to do such things in the knowledge that some people would (however unnecessarily) take offense, is to intend giving that offense.

We know that it is only the unfamiliarity of naked bodies - and an irrational prejudice that people are happier without - that shocks people.

But to lead them to free themselves of that prejudice will be a long, slow, and no doubt often discouraging process.

I am therefore very cheered by the prospect of free beaches; not just for what they will do for us directly, but for what they will do for peoples' attitudes. They are the thin end of a powerful wedge. One way nudist clubs can help drive that wedge home is by growing, to the point where we can no longer be considered a weird minority, and nudism itself is no longer an issue.

But they can only grow and retain their credibility if they grow evenly, representing no particular section of the community. They must have a sufficient - though not strictly proportional - representation of races, religions, economic levels and interests. (This was the point I was making at the rally, but I made a tactical mistake of citing race as my first and only example.) Sufficient that is, that no one can say "They're all X in there," where X equals Pakeha, protestant, middle-class, white-collar, or anything else.

My analysis of the situation is not shared by everyone, I know. Many people are content to be weekend nudists. Others have the facilities to live nude. Many think nudist clubs should be like golf clubs. Some would even limit membership, once their families are paid for.

Certainly "Nudism is not for everyone" to practise. But I look to a day when it is for everyone to accept, and even see, without throwing a wobbly.

Maybe that day is not even so far off: I'm told beaches in Holland have reached that stage already.

Fortunately, the movement is big enough for both the "clubbist" and the "nudeevangelist" points of view - as long as we extend that same tolerance to each other that we ask of the (as yet) non-nudist world.

N.S.W. NUDIST CHARITY BALL           1978

N.S.W. Nudists braved Sydney's heaviest rain for ten months to attend a combined clubs Nudist Charity Ball on Saturday the 18th March '78.

A cheque of $1,000 raised from the Ball has been presented to the N.S.W. State Cancer Council, to assist research into the prevention and cure of Melanoma and Skin Cancer.

Nudists from all the Sydney clubs except Naturi attended the Ball. A very large group from Rosco Nudist Club, Newcastle and members from the A.C.T. Nudist Club, Canberra were booked into the Corban International Motel overnight. Two A.C.T. members even flew down to Sydney that evening to be at the ball. Festivities started at 6 p.m. and went till 1 am. at the Coogee/Randwick R.S.L. Club.

The Gala Night was honoured by the attendance of The Rt. Hon., The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman Leo Port M.B.E. and the Lady Mayoress as Guests of Honour. The Lady Mayoress was made welcome with the presentation of a corsage of orchids and the Lord Mayor drew the first eight prizes in the 101 PRIZE CHARITY RAFFLE. As a memento of his visit the Lord Mayor was presented with a cartoon caricature of himself arriving at the Ball Nude - except for his mayoral chains of office. (see enclosed photo.) Alderman Port confessed to the crowded hall that Cleo Magazine had made him an offer to pose for their nude centrefold wearing only his mayoral chains. He said he turned down the offer because there was not a badge made big enough. The Lord Mayor has visited the FKK beaches of Sylt, Germany and has said he can see no reason why ALL SYDNEY BEACHES should not have a NUDE section.

N.Z.N.F. OFFICERS REPORTS

     Secretary:            LES WELLINGTON

Once again members of the Federation will be meeting to discuss matters affecting the Nudist Movement of this country. The Rules of our organisation allow for a general meeting about the middle of each year, as well as the annual general meeting at the end of the year, and this years half annual general meeting is to be held in Taupo during Queen's Birthday weekend. Besides the formal business of the Federation, this is a grand opportunity for members of the movement to gather and renew old acquaintances or make new ones, and part with the feeling that in the not too distant future we will meet again in the same spirit of kinship.

It is pleasing at last to know where the Rally will be held, and if past rallies are anything to go by, the 1978/79 Canterbury rally should be one of the best yet.

The INF is to hold its 1978 Congress in England during September. This Federation was represented at the last Congress in 1976, and we are hopeful that we can be represented this time. Any members who may be in the area at the time and is interested in attending, even as an observer, can obtain further details from me.

This brings to mind one of the great benefits of belonging to a N.Z. Sun Club, and being affiliated to the Federation. Our members can, on production of the necessary documents, be made more than welcome in hundreds of nudist clubs in New Zealand, Australia and throughout the world. Some people may dream of having just this type of opportunity, others of course make it a reality. Only by keeping this Federation, and the International one, lively and viable concerns can we ensure that peoples dreams continue to become a reality. I am sure that our meeting over Queen's Birthday weekend will reveal that present and prospective N.Z. Nudists have nothing to fear in this respect.

An energetic member of the movement is in the process of forming a Club in the Wairarapa, and I would be please to forward any genuine enquiries onwards.

AN INTRODUCTION TO YOGA FOR NUDISTS

Lots of you may already know what yoga is all about, but then again lots of you may not. I introduce yoga to you because I think it is an ideal form of exercise, well-suited to all ages and particularly best performed by nudists, as "light unrestrictive clothing" is a requirement. For what follows I am indebted to certain books on yoga (of which there are many in the bookshops) and to the experience of my wife, Leena, whose enthusiasm for yoga over the years has never waned.

All of you can do yoga exercises. Young and old, stiff (like me!) and flexible. There are a great variety of exercises. Each individual can choose exercises to suit him or herself. But all exercises can be performed one day by everybody who tries yoga - providing the nudist really tries and there are no mitigating medical reasons.

Yoga is good for you because it exercises all parts of your body. We should all want good health and longevity. Right living provides this. Sufficient exercise forms an integral part of the right way of life. Movement is just as important to the body as are air, water and food. And yoga exercises give all parts of the body a good workout.

You learn to breathe. You learn to relax. You learn to enjoy the sun and air, and Nature. You find peace of mind and joy in living with such a healthy body. Be proud of it.

I suggest all clubs should have an area, a corner, set aside for the practice of yoga. Many members will not be interested, but many will. And those who are not may become interested when they see how healthy and fit those doing yoga are becoming.

I will briefly sketch "The Sun Greeting", which should be of especial appeal to nudists. I quote from "Illustrated Yoga": "In India, the birthplace of Yoga, ancient man regarded the sun as the God of Light. He looked upon the heavenly body as the provider of light and warmth, on whose presence all life on earth depended. Indians showed their reverence to the sun at dawn and in the evening by facing it and performing a series of exercises. This ancient ritual consisted of twelve simple postures, and as a form of exercise it has survived to this day. It is called Sun Greeting. The execution of the twelve postures give you an excellent combination of exercise and deep breathing."

The Sun Greeting works on every part of the body and has a calming influence on nerves and mind. It can be performed at any time of the day (I, myself, would prefer to do the exercises on rising in the morning). You can do them in groups or alone. "The more you do the Sun Greeting, the more you will enjoy it. Regular practice through the years will help you maintain your vitality and keep your youthful looks till a ripe old age. Become a sun worshipper, and diligently practice the twelve steps to fitness and health." Refer to any illustrated book on yoga and you will find the twelve steps. Better still, of course, to learn from somebody who is personally well-acquainted with yoga.

We are concerned with physical yoga here with which we can achieve perfect physical well-being. Mental yoga can teach a higher state of consciousness. That is something else, which may or may not be of relevance to nudism. It is up to the individual.

Eating right is something, another aspect of health, that can be written about in a future issue. We cannot expect our bodies to perform perfectly, and we cannot hope to feel and look our best, if we don't eat properly. Food for thought, isn't it?

FREE BEACHES REPORT     by Emiel Roland

Looking back at the past summer season, we can say that our campaign for Free Beaches in New Zealand has been very successful. We may have had some setbacks as far as official recognition is concerned, but the actual participation on the different unofficial free beaches has probably increased ten fold, compared with the previous year. On one particular beach 300 people on a weekend was a regular occurrence.

The participants on these free beaches in the Auckland area are mainly people who do not belong to any organisation. This is a pity in a way, these people should realize that to belong to an organisation which is promoting these Free beaches, gives more power to our arguments.

On the other hand it is encouraging that so many non-members are enjoying our life style as a matter of course.

No difficulties were encountered on any of the Fee Beach outings organised by clubs or F.B.G. organisation, in spite of a few attempts from opponents, to discredit the Free beach movement.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I was quite astounded on reading three letters in Magazine No. 86 regarding the alleged indecency of the centrefold picture in No. 85 Issue. Two of which apparently represent their Club views. On a further scrutiny of the offending picture, I could find nothing whatever to offend my tender susceptibilities. Could it be because I am beyond redemption, or is it that 1 have a noble mind? I think that children could view this picture without any fear of corruption, it is the adults I worry about. The pose appears to be a natural one, would the objectors prefer that the hand were not there and so expose the genital area? - Not that it matters, but I though our movement was above this sort of thing. - It seems as though there is still some grundyism about, perhaps there is something in the adage "Evil is in the eye of the beholder".

Yours
W. Harrison, W.S.C.

Dear Con,

I am endeavouring to collect a copy of every magazine printed to make up a library for our club. We have unfortunately lost a number of early copies so it is intended to have them bound all together in their years. If any one has spare magazines could I ask them through you to contact me through the Gisborne Sun Club address and I can make arrangements regarding them. The missing issues are the following:

1975 March, July, September, December

1969 March, July December

and all those printed prior to these.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,
Jennifer Fairbrother

Dear Sir,

I would like to congratulate you and your staff on the magazine it seems to get better each issue.

I have been concerned over some of the letters appearing in the magazine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the right to voice it and it is evident that there are a fair number of people who are putting their views in print who are not nudists in the true sense even though a lot belong to clubs.

Nudism's basic promise is that there is nothing obscene in the human body Male or Female and we nudists are able to enjoy the freedom and naturalness that comes from being free from confining clothes. However it appears that there are a number of so called nudists who are able to accept the basic promise of nudism but only in regard to the Male figure.

The horror of these people over the possible sighting of Female genitals is quickly voiced i.e. Depilation unratered, watch crotch shots, disgust at a shot of a girl with her hand near her pubic area.

We as nudists should be setting an example in accepting nudity of both Female and Male as a natural state.

Indeed we appear to have reached this stage with regard to the male nude as we have no letters of any sort regarding male poses or male organs or male organs being on show.

I hope that this letter if published might make a few pseudo nudists really examine the understanding and beliefs in NUDISM.

Yours faithfully,
Naked and Unashamed

Dear Con,

My wife and I have been avid readers and viewers of your fine magazine. When are you going to rename it more in line with today's trends. I'd like to suggest New Zealand Nudist Forum incorporating Australian Nudist News.

What about a competition among subscribers with a prize of 2 years free subscription for instance for the winning entry that is adopted.

We find it refreshing that articles and letters are being published with contents of varied views, that is good news for the movement and keeps the Nudist ideas on the move.

It is with mixed feelings that we read the adverse criticism about your December centrefold. One wonders what sort of Club Committees get elected. I sympathise with Eddie Robertshaw, he has said it all in the March issue.

What undercurrents are flowing, that all of a sudden it is found to be not quite nice to be photographed nude if you have your hand near your genitals or appear to have them there. Certainly some photo's can be outright sexual and do not belong in a Nudist magazine - the implied obscenity however is in the eyes and the mind of the viewer. The picture in question is delightful and the subject is obviously enjoying herself naturally, be it just sunbathing or masturbating as was suggested by comparisons made with other publications.

I feel the real objection is that many of the Nudists• have not come to terms with their sexuality and bring these latent views with them when they join the clubs.

We hope you are continuing in letting this fresh approach to Nudism be voiced, only this way can we get rid of those behind the fence and secretive no-names type of clubs.

We have been getting the magazine through the news agent and find they are always late, the March issue was on the stand only today so enclosed our subscription.

Sincerely yours
D Vander Vliet
Latham A.C.T.

Dear Sir,

The instant one steps into the magic of the first early light, one is aware of the strange unearthly qualities of the predawn The eerie stature of the tall pines, still glistening with the early morning dew, and the penetrating sunrays glimpsing through the uppermost branches, invite you - no - COMMAND you to strip and walk nude in this unbelievable tranquility The first stirring of life commences the most beautiful time of day. Everything is so fresh and clean I feel an inner harmony with this scene I belong

The creek is lightly touched with a predawn mist and shortly the water creatures will emerge at the pontoon for their daily treat of bread. The first piece of bread ripples the water and the surface becomes a cesspool of activity as they all converge on the spot. Some of the larger fish accept offerings from the hands of their feeder. Its a fascinating sight to see such untamed creatures actually nudging the hands of a man for food with apparent fearlessness The turtles and even the greedy eel show us the beauty of the untamed and free, but the fish, whose fluid grace cannot be denied, have a beauty all of their own Their silver and white skins are dappled by the sunlight as the first rays penetrate the water where they flicker and play contentedly

I turn from the creek and I'm confronted by a kookaburra peacefully feeding He stirs a little but, after a inquisitive look and an acknowledging kook, he ignores me completely As I gaze at the naturally exotic beauty of our club grounds, I realize its a naturist paradise. "GOOD COMPANIONS" is quite unlike any other nudist club I have seen. The heavenly scent of the honeysuckle and jasmine reaches my nostrils as I watch gaily coloured butterflies flit from flower to shrub. In the rich green lawns rising to the pool with the barbeque tucked in over the rise and the caravans tucked neatly amongst the pines, just seem to be waiting for that beautiful soul warming sun which will be in full blaze in an hour or so I am overwhelmed by the charm of our club with its rich blend of colours, shadows and sunshine This paradise is a perfect foil the companionship and friendliness offered by our members. The whole place is tamed just enough for us mortals to have a few creature comforts in harmony with nature...

It works for us at the Good Companions as our club shows...

A healthy, happy member

Dear Con,

I have been a member of 4 clubs and have visited several others. I am wholly one hundred percent committed to the nudist movement. I am a nudist. I like being nude as many others do. Which is why I feel sad.

I feel sad because to me some things are outstandingly lacking in our clubs. Perhaps there is a club or clubs somewhere (which will be good news), but I haven't seen any evidence of such in the pages of this magazine.

What is lacking is 1) a stress on health and fitness and 2) a real appreciation for and awareness of Nature. For both these things the nudist situation is ideally suited.

You'll all be nodding your heads and saying "yes, we know". But do you?

There are sports of all kinds, swimming, sunshine, fresh air, etc. All of which is good for the health. But is health really considered. Be honest. Sports are for nude social participation and relaxation. The same mainly applies to swimming, sunshine and fresh air. Because you are at a nudist club you are deriving the health benefits without consciously realising it.

Which again is why I am sad. A nudist club provides an ideal situation for the pursuit of complete health and fitness. We are all aware of our bodies. Don't we owe it to ourselves and others to look after our bodies? It truly saddens me to see that there are some nudists who are smokers, some who are grossly overweight, some who lack energy and some who are just not healthy-looking. Without caring! Let's wake up, members! Let us do something which will truly benefit us all in our nude life.

I propose that each club should have it's constitution amended to include a new committee member. This member can be called the Health Rep or what you will. Each club must have somebody who knows about health or is interested in knowing. That member can be elected to the committee. If a club cannot find such a member then it will be poorer for not finding such, and will be unattractive to prospective members.

The Health Rep can see to it that the club has facilities for the pursuit of health. These facilities can be almost nil Basically, nothing is required. Just an area of ground, the time of members and determination. The Health Rep can organise a schedule. If a club wishes to it can purchase a few yoga mats, perhaps a bull worker or some other muscle-training device, a weighing machine, etc . . . It depends on the individual club. Not all members will be interested. It will depend on the keenness and the numbers of those pursuing complete health and fitness. The Health Rep will also be a guide, a member who can show where information can be sought on the right foods to it and the kinds of exercises that can be performed. Another facility, if a club is very involved, could be a library of appropriate literature.

I have written an introductory article on yoga in this issue. If readers are interested I can or someone else can elaborate further and provide articles on the manifold aspects of health and fitness - all with relevance to nudism. I would also like to write something on the subject of our relevance to Nature in a future issue.

Keith Bolton,

Dear Sir,

First of all, I must apologize for my English language which is not as good as I'd like (I am French). In spite of it, I want to write some remarks about your magazine "New Zealand Naturist".

I am a subscriber to your magazine and I enjoy myself for it. Although each copy takes about three months to get to me, I always read satisfactorily the news about naturist activities in New Zealand. Congratulations for your wonderful copy, which quality is first-rate. Your photographs are perfect. It is pleasant to receive a naturist magazine in which there is no repression in its illustration. To people, whose bodies we can see on your copies, be congratulated for their contribution to a general recognition of beauty and purity of our bodies. Although naturists photography doesn't involve the whole naturism, it's however a great contribution in the way to get the rehabilitation of human body. Our bodies won't be longer considered and used as objects when everybody will be able to look at them without negative thoughts, as naturists do among themselves. It should be a marvellous thing if mankind could at last realise that the body is a beautiful creation of God, and that it's a kind of insult to Him when human beings consider their bodies as if they were or involve something bad, or even use them to get something which has nothing in common with their grandeur.

Yours in Naturism,
Pierre MOURONVAL
[Spain]

Dear Con,

Congratulations to Eddie Robertshaw and Patric Trott for their excellent reports in the March issue. We have been involved in and keen observers of the nudist movement in Australia for almost 13 years, with nine of these as Delegates and Executive of the Australian Nudist Federation. The reports are recommended reading for all club committees and members, and the similarity between the New Zealand nudist scene and Australia at this present time would appear to be almost identical.

Like other organisations, ours unfortunately also has its "empire builders" who show little or no concern for the interests of fellow nudists but simply set about their personal ego trips in a most unethical and destructive manner. Our experience has been like Eddie's, in that 99 out of the hundred are polite and most definitely interested to learn more about our life style. The members unable to acknowledge they are nudists outside their club block the growth and progress of all our aims and ideals - principally the promotion of nudism.

Hiding behind fences, christian names only and pseudo club names which in no way educates the community to what the club is or has to offer is all so hypocritical. This attitude will never gain us respect, increased membership, or our rightful place in community acceptance, aspects which our committees continually seek, and so they should.

We cannot possibly expect the community to accept and support us, while many members themselves display guilt and insincerity at belonging to a nudist club.

In relation to Patric's report, the Australian Nudist Federation like your national organisation has developed similarly in recent years, with some exceptions. Unfortunately to date we have no Nudist Youth Group, despite earlier attempts. Also, we have no Free Beach Groups, however, this has not been necessary, as since the Australian Nudist Federation and Affiliated Clubs began our Free Beach Campaign adopted at the 1972 Annual Convention, we in this country have progressed in obtaining legal free beaches in two States and two Territories, and acceptance of unofficial free beaches in three other States, all due to the continuous hard work of the Australian Nudist Federation and its clubs.

Yours sincerely in nudism,
Mary and Ted Weston.

Don't visit us at the grounds unless you want to see a big change. Following the crowd we had there last summer and the realisation of some of the flaws in their layout you would almost think we have torn the place apart and started again, but its all to give us a greater number of camping sites and improved game courts or next summer. All this of course has not been to the detriment of any of our winter social evenings.

Planning is well under way with our Annual Cabaret, with the theme being an Adventure in the South Seas it promises to be as enjoyable as ever, why not join us.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

The exceptional weather conditions which prevailed right through until late autumn have finally broken. In fact, we can look back on it as the best for many years. As activities go over this period we have held our inter-club sports day, which once again was very successful, with visitors coming from as far away as Gisborne including the National President, Ian Fairbrother and family. The evenings entertainment that followed was a discotheque, which had the first.and only performance of the "Ranui Corp De Ballet" and hula dancing. There were surprise attractions which were well received by the large number present.

At the swimming sports our junior members showed us considerable improvement and a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. This was also noticeable in their miniten tournament. The winter social scene has already begun with Sauna evenings at a new venue.

North Shore Nudist Club are continuing their popular monthly hot swims at Paraki. Further details from the Secretary about charges etc. Our own big splash in at a large indoor complex will start shortly. To wind up this summary we would like to mention that a short sequence was shot on our grounds for the Access T.V. programme.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

The usual maintenance and working bees seem to have been the main story for Mecca over the past few weeks, along with sport and visits to other clubs. Enquiries from other Gisborne social clubs about using the grounds for their meetings and social evenings means that we are doubly keen to keep everything up to scratch. Sports courts nearing completion and the Hot Tub made ready for winter use means there is still plenty of time for relaxation.

Social evenings in the club house along with the showing of the Rally movie meant that entertainment was not forgotten either. A day at sea on a member's yacht was enjoyed by many and the sun tan made up for the sea sickness suffered by one or two.

Our plans for the forth coming year include of course our cabaret on the 8th July along with the usual Hot Tub evenings, and with the new concrete courts our sports minded members will be able to keep up their practice.

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB

What a terrific summer we have had weather wise and with regards to our increase in membership.

At Easter we had a very successful Camp-in with visitors from Waikato and Wellington. The weekend included sports, tramps in the bush, a film evening, Sauna evening, and the highlight of the weekend - a Disco in the clubhouse on Saturday night. The old timbers really vibrated that night.

In January we had an additional area bulldozed flat for camping. The grass has taken very well in this area and we expect that it will be in full use by next summer. We had the area for the miniten court levelled at the same time, ready for laying it later in the year.

We will be holding a social afternoon at the club for the last Sunday of each month during the Winter, to keep all the members in touch with the club.

Don't forget our Annual Cabaret on Saturday 9th September, 1978.

NORTH SHORE NUDIST CLUB INC.

It has been quite a while since we have been in print, probably because we have been so busy!

Since our last report, we have entered into an agreement to purchase "Kirikau" - our Club grounds, which we have been leasing for the last 4 years, and by the time you read this, they will be ours - albeit on drip feed for many years!

We have been going flat out recently trying to raise as much money as possible, and in this line we had a successful Annual Open Day in March - quite late in the summer (but still very hot), with our usual Hangi, put down by some of our members, Trading table run by our ladies, and a good turnout from other Clubs - especially from Northern Sunseekers.

We also have been demolishing and painting houses (not necessarily in that order) and doing all sorts of odd jobs to help the finances along. At present we are upgrading our grounds now that the long hot summer has gone, to provide us with further volley ball and tenniquoit courts and a new miniten court.

On the social side our regular monthly swims at Parakai, are in full swing and members of all clubs and friends are cordially invited to come along and enjoy a hot swim and afterwards a meal if you want in the adjoining restaurant. B.Y.O.G.

Remember, we welcome visitors and new members to our club - come up and see us sometime!

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

An article in a nationally distributed, N.Z. published, weekly magazine back in April, made the statement that there were three nudist clubs in Auckland. The largest one named, was incorrectly located several kilometres north of its actual location. If the reporter in question should happen to read this article, there are five clubs in Auckland. K.V.C. may be very short on members at present, but we are still in existence. We imagine that Auckland Sun Club would be fairly irate at being excluded from the list, after all they are the second longest established club in Auckland.

At K.V.C. willing workers, and a generous loan from a member, have seen the clubhouse extended and doubled in size, much hard labour is being put into digging out the ground for the miniten court. With luck it will be in commission by the start of next summer season.

Seasonal thought. One advantage of being on top of a hill, drainage and surface flooding are never a problem.

See you in the spring.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB INC.

At the time of writing, a wet, windy, Manawatu Good Friday, dare WE also mention THE SUNCLUBBERS SUMMER?, the caterpillar invasion, the flies, the brown dry grass, the blazing hot sun?. No - perhaps not. But what about the SIX Rally trophies triumphantly placed in our Clubhouse, the fantastic Open Beach Day, the Youth Marathon Swim that netted about 60 dollars, the most enjoyable weekend visit by members of the Hawkes Bay Club and the blazing, hot, sun, sun, sun!

We were delighted to make room for another 5 trophies brought back from the Tolaga Bay Rally - all members who attended had a marvellous time.

Our Youth Club has been gaining momentum during the year. An old store shed is in the process of being converted into their own Clubhouse, hence the marathon swim to raise funds. 15 of our younger members took part, starting at 9 a.m. one Saturday and finishing at 9 p.m. that evening. Sponsorship was for hours spent swimming not for laps of the pool, which was just as well because 2047 laps of the 21 metre pool were recorded. A truly magnificent effort.

Another fund raising activity was in the potato field - literally. We moved out holus-bolus as a Club to the banks of the Manawatu River, where, would you believe, harvested 14 tonnes of 'murphies', which have since been sold and all proceeds to go into our coffers. Thanks Bob, for giving us a great weekend on your property.

The half A.G.M. held early in March gave indication that a second toilet block was at the drawing board stage and likely to be in operation for next season.

Our off season activities start with an 'Arabian Nights' party to raise money for a Miniten court, monthly saunas will follow to be held every third Sunday of each month.

Writer (plus wife and caravan) enjoyed 2 weeks of wine, friends and sun at A.O.H.C. in the early New Year - how we could use some of that excess flora on our Club grounds.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

At Murrayglade we have had a fabulous summer. It commenced with the thunderous crash of ti-tree and the roar of the bulldozer to form our new camping area, serviced by (at this stage) a clay road (Olsson's Way). Everyone who camped in seemed to have a great time, what with the mosquitoes, sand flies, opossums, hangis and the parties, not to mention the early morning awakening call of "Volleybaaaall!"

We have also raced ahead with the block work for the third and final stage of our new clubhouse, and will hopefully be able to use the old house for firewood before too long.

Things on the sporting side are also starting to happen, with the commencement of construction of a miniten court on the lower grounds.

Another of our Gumball Rallies was held in February well organised and well attended. It is now an annual event with a handsome shield going to the winners to hold for one year. This event is open to all clubs and we look forward to more competition next year.

We also have a stock pile of dry fallen ti-tree to sell during the winter months, to boost our building fund, so as you can see, we all have been very busy, but still have had time to enter three volley ball teams in the A.O.H.C. Sports weekend, which was another of their great events. We hope the Roosters, N.Y.C. Babes and of course the Ladies, have taken note of our performance and are prepared for our next visit. (Take that one how you like!)

A.O.H.C. were invited back to Murrayglade for a return match, but next time we will have to arrange our Rock and Roll party better than the night before! The day ended with a barbeque and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

We have also had another of our most successful Open Days, which resulted in an increase in our membership. We are all looking forward to the winter months so we can rest up for the coming summer.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Didn't we have a lovely summer? It was great to have beautiful sunshine for just about every occasion. Open Day being a notable exception.

Despite the down pour on that occasion it was still a great day. A good crowd turned up and most of our prospective members got into "uniform". A Hangi was prepared for those who wished to stay late and just about everyone did. Nice one!

We now have a miniten court which was in operation for Visitors' Day. Once again the weather was kind and friends came from Taranaki, Rotorua, and South Auckland - hope we haven't missed anyone out, Nice to see you!

Our annual trip to the beach was a great success. Good to get sunburnt at the tail end of the summer.

Our next "event" will be the weekend at Matamata's hot springs in June. Looking forward to seeing as many visitors as possible.

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

All too quickly we find ourselves in mid winter again, the Taupo ½A.G.M. over already, but the the spring not too far ahead.

But winter does not mean a stop in activities at The Orchard, for last April we put a new project into operation.

How would "El Rancho Orchard" sound for a sun club with a commercial sheep farming operation in full swing? Yes, The Orchard is now running 55 sheep on our outer paddocks as a club owned and operated venture, a source of revenue, and also relatively cheap meat for members.

One of our farmer members, Jack, has given his expert advice and help in selecting stock and building drafting pens for handling and killing. No doubt in the next twelve months a number of us will know a lot more about sheep farming than we do at present. Fortunately, we have plenty of feed, and in the light of experience may be able to increase our stock numbers in the future.

Saunas have maintained their year round, twice monthly popularity, a very enjoyable dine and dance was held in May at the Stardust Room on the top floor of the Southern Cross Hotel, and this month of June sees our first venture into the cabaret field.

Fund raising towards our property purchase - now only twelve months away - is going well, and we are confident the N.Z.N.F. raffle, which The Orchard is organising to commence mid-June, will help substantially. It is now up to the clubs throughout the country to back us fully in selling tickets on a 50/50 basis, to ensure the financial success of the raffle, and to boost their own club funds. Clubs can help one another considerably through co-operation like this, and the benefit of our advice and experience can be yours for the future.

Look after yourselves, and meanwhile - back to the ranch!

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB INC.

With major changes in our Committees plus land title in hand our Club heads into a New Year.

May also saw our 4th Anniversary pass: Four years has given us our land title, club house, shop, boundary in iron and bamboo, kids and larger kids pools, rolled volley-ball, miniten and quoits courts, trampoline, tree house, a lot of plants and shrubs plus a lot of really good memories for those lucky enough to witness these achievements.

I trust the Club will continue ahead under its new leaders as it has obviously done over the last four years.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

Winter is upon us though the weather still holds a summer feeling. Still the evenings are chilly and at publishing time we will no doubt be in the "frost" zone.

Winter is not a time to hibernate (at least not in Rotorua) but a time to habitate the warmer places such as sauna's and hot pools. A number of winter sauna's are organised as well as some local hot pool parties.

Work at our grounds continues with a lot of action to prepare facilities for the oncoming "79" summer. Improved volleyball court, more camp space, improved children's play area, pool surrounds, and new trampoline are some of the "new look" theme for this summer.

Visitors please phone contact numbers to find out what's on in town while you're here.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC.

Hello again from Wellington Sun Club. Since we have been most remiss and haven't told you of ourselves since Christmas, we'll do our best to remedy the situation now.

With the lovely summer we enjoyed and with two advertising campaigns, we have gained lots of new members and intend making newspaper advertising a regular feature of our summer activities.

Our clubhouse has progressed significantly with the floor now completely finished, the building weatherproofed and the mezzanine floor completed ready for the members' lounge and we are now saving for lounge furniture and other home comforts which we hope to install.

On the recreation scene, we have nearly completed a third floor to our kiddies adventure playground and have invested in a brand new full size trampoline which has been receiving enthusiastic use by all and sundry since it's christening.

We now have an opportunity to link up with the town sewage system and -the associated work involved will be a major feature of our working bees this year. The advantages, of course are obvious and the improvement to our hygienic facilities will be most welcome.

Our Annual General Meeting was held on April 2 and we now have a new committee to lead us to bigger, brighter and better success in the forthcoming year. With bowls evenings, film shows, socials etc. which we can now hold in the club house and local sauna evenings on Sundays we expect to enjoy an exciting winter.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA:

The Nedlands City Council and the Army are to negotiate on facilities for Swanbourne's nude bathing beach. It is estimated that 8,000 nude bathers would use the beach on a good day. An enlightened attitude by the Commonwealth Government has already seen "Free Beaches" in the A.C.T. and Northern Territory. The Beach fronts on to an Army Rifle Range, which is Commonwealth land and not under State jurisdiction.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB
NEWS

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB, Inc.

Our apologies for not having an article in the March "New Zealand Naturist". When the deadline for copy passed, our Club correspondents were somewhere on the Nullarbor Plain, returning from the Convention.

We were very pleased that a large group from our Club were able to attend the Convention in Perth, while another large contingent spent the Xmas-New Year break at "River Valley". Everyone had a marvellous time, and returned home with plenty of stories and photographs.

On our return, we found that our President, Rick Venning was being posted to Darwin. The send-off party for Rick and Shirley was quite an event. They will be sadly missed, having put so much effort into founding the Club, and promoting nudism in the A.C.T. In appreciation, they have since been made honorary life members. The President's position has now passed to George Cook, with Lorna May becoming our new Vice-President.

For World Nudist Day we made a mass donation at the Blood Bank. This earned a good newspaper report, and brought a marvellous radio interview on the A.B.C. Unfortunately we were unable to claim lower than average blood pressures (see December "New Zealand Naturist"), but the Blood Bank assure us that terror of the needle often raises blood pressures!

Since then, our members have thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the second Annual Nudist Ball in Sydney, and over Easter, at the new nudist resort "Bangalee", near Togumwal. We can recommend both of these to everyone.

In May we celebrated our Club's second birthday with a Club Dinner. We have had two very exciting years, with our membership now well over 200, and our success in having the A.C.T. free beach extended. We are also very hopeful of gaining club grounds in the near future.

As always, we welcome visitors from other clubs. There are plenty of friendly events on our calendar, so if you're coming through Canberra, why not contact us through P.O. Box 242, Woden, A.C.T. 2606.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST HOLIDAY RANCH

A big thank you to those people concerned, for accepting our clubs affiliation into the Australian Nudist Federation.

Our club is only 2½ years old and growing rapidly both in membership and facilities.

The new toilet and shower block is at long last completed (Womens; 2 bowls, 1 shower, 1 Hand Basin, 1 Urinal) we haven't disposed of the earth closets as yet because with 89 acres in use they may save a long walk (or run).

Petanque and Archery are proving to be popular sports, along with Volley Ball, Miniten,, Badminton, Swimming, (in 3 dams) and Horse Riding.

We had a fantastic four days at Easter starting with a massive bonfire on the Friday night near the biggest dam. A fancy dress night on the Saturday, and on the Sunday we had types of sports for young and old, a barbeque in the afternoon and finishing the night with Bingo games.

On Monday we had a general meeting to discuss progress and campaigning for new members.

We congratulate "The Three Bears" for having their club chosen to old the next Australian convention; and also congratulate Colin (ex Tindo member) for gaining council approval, after court procedure, to start yet another club in Queensland.

THE THREE BEAR'S SUN & HEALTH CLUB

It was ever so nice to get the rain everything was so dry and the water storage was so low, but now all storage is filled to capacity and we are adding more all the time.

Progress for the rally is going well and in the next report should be able to advise a clearer picture for all. 5 courts now have bricks around them but in some places the bricks have to come higher to make the courts more level.

Many bookings are coming in, so if you hope to come to the Rally please book as soon as possible.

Our 5th birthday will be on 23rd July it will also be the Three Bears interclub day with a cake decorating competition with two very nice prizes, last year there were 16 entries, the cakes are then auctioned so some very nice cakes will be available.

The swimming pool has been closed but will open again in September when we will have two, a ring road has been made around the club, with lots more camping areas being made as well.

ACCESS '78 - PROGRESS:

Unfortunately it was impossible to complete our South Pacific Television Access Program 'Bare With Us' in time for it to be viewed before the onset of winter.

The decision to ask T.V.2 to hold viewing till the beginning of '78/79 summer was made and we have their co-operation. Possible viewing time now Oct/Nov. However Club Secretaries will still be informed immediately viewing date is known and commercial advertising will back the communications up. Keep watching Access though, it looks like t may be a better series than last - we can only hope!

N.Z.N.F. RALLY '79

The people at Pineglades extend a warm welcome to naturists everywhere for Rally '79.

The first meeting of the Rally committee was held recently. It is a group of people radiating ideas and enthusiasm to make your visit a lifetime memory. Indications are that this could be the big one, so numbers attending may have to be limited. Registration forms are available through club secretaries.

A lot of money has been spent on power and water improvements, as well as much work done on the grounds.

We would like you to see it. So, be there, you won't regret it, and we claim you will never forget it.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

From the centre of Australia. A young nudist family in Alice Springs would be glad to write, or have visitors from among the nudists who might be passing through the area. We will supply name and address to genuine enquirers.

The first issue of the "South African Naturist" had a short life span. Two months to be exact! It was prohibited as "Banned Literature" in the Government Gazette. The magazine was a harmless booklet, the type of the early 1950's Naturist magazine.

In Portugal the Portuguese Naturist Federation has submitted documents to the government upon their demand in order to proceed with legislation of the practice of naturism. Approval has since been received.
