The Single Man.

Poor chap!! He receives a pretty raw deal from many clubs; some won't have him at all, others keep him waiting, others insist he bring a girl friend and generally he feels like a leper; thoroughly undesirable and not wanted. What a disgrace!

We talk a lot about the evils of apartheid and such discrimination; we brag a little about our happy memberships and do our best to persuade the families to join our ranks. But the single man, NO! He's different, we can't have him in our midst. He's single.

Are those members who glibly talk about the fear of the ladies being embarrassed, the need for keeping a sex balance and all the rest of the poppycock really sincere and truthful? What is behind their protestations? I have a pretty good idea and some of their arguments would not look well in print.

Let's face up to this question honestly and fearlessly. Admittedly, some single men, just as some married men, are certainly undesirable and we don't want either types in our clubs. It may also bo found that the percentage of genuine enquiries is small as a result. But what about the others? Surely that does not mean we should refuse then, just because they happen to be single.

In every club I have visited, splendid types of unmarried men have bean the stalwarts, the reliable chaps who turn out to do the work, who give their cash and are a credit to the movement. These clubs would have been the poorer had not the single men been with them, for much of their present success and development is attributable to their labours and guidance. Some of them have since married and brought their wives in with them. Why in heaven's name, why, should this type be kept out? Many a time I have seen up to a dozen men with one woman and despite their nudity, there was no embarrassment. Why should there be when any one of them would have protected her should it be necessary? Mutual trust among club members, be they men or women, married or single, does not engender embarrassment.

No, to bar a man just because he so far has not taken a wife is a terrible thing to do and not worthy of any member of this movement.

When the ladies complain, entirely of their own free will, then a club might need to consider taking action, but until then, let us welcome the muscle, brains and help the single man can give us. If they are the right type, we will never regret it.

A man usually feels better after a few winks, especially if she winks back.

The Law Journal poses an interesting question - and provides a paralysing answer. A motorist was 100 yards from an open level railway crossing and was doing 50 m.p.h. At the same time a train was approaching at 60 m.p.h., and its distance from the crossing was 375 feet.

The problem raised: Did the motorist get across?

The solution: Yes, the motorist got across all right. His widow paid for it out of the insurance money.

On Having the Courage of one's Convictions

By Gerald Wakely, P.R.O.

This business of using one's name in connection with naturist activities I find a most vexing one. Vexing in that the attitude of those who would not that their names be used is one that I find difficult to tolerate, not so much because of what I sometimes feel is unnecessary shyness as the way in which reasons for not using their real names are put forward.

Neither my wife nor I have ever concealed our interest in naturism nor our participation in it. We have many friends and acquaintances who are completely uninterested in naturism but they accept that we are interested in it and do not think the less of us on that score - they've probably got plenty of other reasons for doing that! The point is, though, that because we do not try to cover up our interest they accept that interest as a normal one in the same way that they would membership of a tennis club or tramping or what have you. They mayn't agree with naturism - in fact, their reactions to the actual subject range from the "cor blimey' to the horrified - but they respect our right to choose our own form of relaxation.

Now, there are those in the movement, both in our own club and outside it, who do not want their names used. Some of these folk, when we discuss the matter, imply that the particular social position in which they find themselves precludes the use of their full names. 'Now this is an attitude up with which (as Mr. Churchill is reputed to have said) I find it difficult to put.' The implication here is one that is, or should be entirely foreign to naturism: I move in a higher social strata than you and can't afford to be harmed in this way. Do people, who say this sort of thing realise in what extremely unpleasant light they put themselves?

It would be pointless to enter into an argument on social standing. However, it should be recalled that those who have achieved anything in the past in the face of public opinion - and who have changed that opinion from indifference or derision or hostility to themselves to acceptance or tolerance - have done so by using their own names, by having the courage of their convictions. Furthermore, it has been that courage that has made people respect them even when they disagree with them.

So one would say, first and foremost, if you are a naturist and believe that it has something to offer others, give it your backing openly and unashamedly; you will be respected for it by those worth respecting. If you still feel that you cannot use your own name, don't seek to explain yourself away by implying that you live in such a rarefied atmosphere socially that the fabric of your existence would collapse if anyone outside the club discovered you are a naturist - have the guts to say that you haven't the guts!

Pen Portrait

IVAN HAWKEY of TIMARU

Apart from it general interest the purpose of this pen portrait series is to place on permanent record the achievements of our leaders and others, and their contribution to the establishment of the nudist movement in New Zealand.

Some names will be familiar, while others will be unknown, especially among the many new members who are supplementing our ranks all the tine. In the latter category, the name of Ivan Hawkey ranks as one of our staunchest advocates in the South Island. Ivan has had more than the usual number of setbacks, but these have not daunted his courage or enthusiasm. Almost alone in Timaru, he worked hard to make contacts, even placing advertisements in the paper. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, he met with little success locally.

Ivan will probably be best remembered by various people scattered about the world with whom he corresponded, discussing ideas and ideals. As far back as fifteen or sixteen years ago, his home was 'open house' to any nudist and there were many who accepted this hospitality and became firm friends.

His wife, 'Oria, has always shared his interest, and their children have been brought up as nudists from birth. Although now in their teens, they still enjoy their outings in the sun. Always a keen photographer, his camera has recorded many a family outing and overseas magazines were glad to have his cooperation.

Now that there are established clubs within reasonable distance of Timaru, the Hawkeys are able to visit these when opportunity offers. Being members of the Canterbury Sun & Health Club and fully paid up for the next eight years, they are assured of a welcome there. Although Ivan was unsuccessful in establishing a club, it certainly was not for the lack of trying. We can applaud his courage and ceaseless efforts in years gone by and can express the wish that we had a few more people of the same calibre today.

We will be pleased to reproduce photographs of the Hawkey family in our next issue.

OUR REVIEW.

With this issue we bring you four extra pages, being reproductions of photographs kindly made possible by subjects and photographers and we feel that this is indeed another definite step towards achieving our ultimate goal. These pictures will add to the interest of our readers, far all the descriptions in the world are never as good as the actual pictures. One or two photographers to date have signified their willingness to contribute to this feature, and of the members approached for permission to have their pictures reproduced, we have met with no refusals. That is splendid and we hope it may be regarded as the pattern for all future requests.

We now hold several negatives taken at National Rallies and elsewhere and some of these have already been approved for overseas publication. We may wish to include some of them in future Reviews and should there be anyone who may object to this, we would request them to let us know immediately. Otherwise, we will assume all overseas releases will stand for New Zealand as well.

Circulation figures are creeping up and we confidently expect more Reviews to be placed in the bookshops, now that its appeal is greater. As soon as our income increases sufficiently, we will be delighted to add more improvements. So, over to you again and the appeal for more photographs still stands. Otago has started off the idea; can we feature your club picture in the next issue? Who's next.

NEXT DEADLINE.

The deadline for the next issue is 24th. December, and we request that not only all material for publication be in by that date, but that all ORDERS from clubs be in then too. This applies especially where an increase is necessary, as we need at least a month's notice for printing the covers and producing the photo pages.

DO YOU THINK YOUR CLUB FEES ARE TOO HIGH?

How's this from the Sunray Club in Victoria, Australia? They have been formed about a year and like most clubs, have plenty of expenses in getting established. They have taken a realistic approach to the problem and are charging an annual fee of £3.3.0. for single girls, £10.10.0. for couples, and £15.15.0. for single men. In addition, there is an entry fee of £2.2.0. in each case. Still complaining?

XMAS HOLIDAYS.

Many people will be on the move during the holidays and some will want to visit some of the clubs. May we make two suggestions. You will be welcome to visit any of the clubs listed in this magazine but don't just knock on the door and say you've arrived. The usual courtesy prevails, so drop a note to the secretary beforehand. If you are a member of a club, include a note from your secretary just to ensure that all will be well. If you are not a member of a club, drop a line to this office and we will take the appropriate steps as the circumstances dictate. And please remember the stamped addressed envelope.

You may wish to stay a few hours or you might fancy pitching your tent and staying much longer. Just as in a motor camp, it is customary to pay for the privilege. All the N.Z. clubs have agreed not to make a charge for visitors, but you will find a donation box which is there for your convenience. We trust this information will avoid friction or disappointments and make everyone happy.

SUNLAMPS.

From time to time we receive enquiries about the value of sunlamps and their ability to maintain that lovely summer tan. There is nothing like experience, and therefore we ask any reader who has used a lamp to write in and tell us about its benefits, merits and demerits. So drop us a line and remember to mention the type and model of lamp used and if possible, the price.

OTHER EXPERIENCES.

Maybe you have enjoyed a wonderful nudist holiday in some secret hideaway or have had an interesting, amusing or even alarming experience that would make good reading in this magazine. Most of you have had a 'first' experience, and that just might interest somebody else who has the same qualms that you had. We would like to publish this sort of thing and you may have had just the experiences that we are looking for. No names will be mentioned unless you say so. Please get your writing pads out and write right NOW.

ILLUSTRATIONS.

We hope you approve of the photographs included in this issue. How nice to include a lot more. We know they are going to help sell our magazine, for the more we can increase its popularity, the bigger the circulation. The bigger the circulation, the more money we get and the bigger the improvements we can introduce. And so it goes on.

We received a few offers of photographs in response to our appeal in the last issue but we know there are many, many more members who have done nothing about it. We want a lot more good, contrasty pictures suitable for publication. Don't leave it to the other chap.

Why are nudist clubs like bakers?

That payment of the national levy be made only on members who are financial for the year concerned.

That photos of club activities and club facilities be cleared officially by the club concerned before being published in the Review.

Delegates need to discuss these remits with their executives in order that they will know the mind of their committees and can speak to them accordingly at Wanganui.

TENIKOIT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

In a recent letter, Joan Treanor raises a couple of interesting points. Realising that men have been predominant in recent championship matches at National Rallies, she asks why are the ladies left out. In answer to this, clubs need to realise that it is they who select their teams and ladies have equal rights with men. It may be of interest to know that there have been seven occasions in the past when ladies have been included in the teams, 4 times from Christchurch, twice from Wanganui and once from Wellington.

The other point concerns the juniors. Apparently Christchurch is in the happy position of having lots of youngsters from whom to choose and she raises the question of senior and intermediate teams as well as the junior competition. Well, we would say to that, that if there are enough entrants we would agree wholeheartedly, for Jim Q. of Wellington is willing to make his offer of a trophy available for this purpose and if necessary, another could be obtained. But, have we enough teenagers elsewhere? If so, let us know at once and two or three sections can be arranged. However, if this is not possible, we will have to restrict the age to 16 for this year's junior tenikoit championships. And doubles, of course.

Thanks, Joan, for your letter and your interest.

Extract from "I Was a Savage" by Prince Modupe.

At their school the boys were taught hunting and tracking and the lore of herbs and plants, as well as how to listen to the silence of the jungle, and so to become at one with all life therein. The duty to perpetuate the tribe was stressed, and the boys were instructed that the Earth Mother had 'sealed' the girls, and that no man night break that seal, under pain of the heaviest penalties, until a girl was given to him as a wife by their consenting families.

Growing girls were being taught in a similar bush school close by, and at one stage of this general instruction of youth, boys girls were shown to each other unclothed, so that curiosity would be killed.

ENGLAND.

The B.S.B.A. announced that 59 persons travelled to Denmark from England to take part in the 7th. World Naturist Congress. Of these, 14 British clubs were represented.

Prince Philip's favourite charity, the National Playing Field Association, has accepted Britain's North Kent Sun Club as a member. This welcome news was published in the "Daily Mail".

Recently, the Spring Wood Sun Club appealed against the refusal of the local council to grant planning permission for the erection of a pavilion on their grounds. They won their appeal and permission was received.

BELGIUM.

The Law prevents adults and children from mixing, consequently camps must have two enclosures, one for adults and another for children.

DENMARK.

A member of a highly esteemed European Family is a member of the Danish Naturist Federation.

AUSTRIA

Reports in the past of the closing of the huge Lobau camps on the banks of the Danube disappointed many clubs. Now we have received news that a naturist camp opened in June of this year. A warden has been appointed and the public works which lead to the closing of the other camps has resulted in the damming of the Danube, improving the facilities for swimming.

CANADA.

The Mauritan News, official publication of the Mauritans, Canada, recently reprinted a page of extracts from our Review. We are happy to return the compliment by quoting the following from their March issue. It is taken from the Encyclopaedia Canadiana and speaks for itself.

"Nudism in Canada has an estimated 2000 or more followers, 700 of whom are active, dues-paying members of the Canadian Sunbathing Association. This organisation was founded in October, 1947 by Ray Connett, a postal clerk in Vancouver, where headquarters remain. It affiliated with the American Sunbathing Association in 1953. The latter, with National Headquarters in Mays Landing, New Jersey, represents an estimated 85,000 nudists on the whole of the North American Continent.

The official Canadian nudism creed is that all parts of the human body are equally pure and wholesome, and that clothing, therefore, need only be worn for comfort or utility, never for shame. Since Canadian law prohibits nudity on public land that is visible to the public, nudism is confined to secluded private property, usually owned by clubs that have been organised for that purpose.

There are a dozen or more nudist or sunbathing clubs in Canada. The oldest is the Van Tan Club in Vancouver. The largest nudist property is Norhaven, near North Bay, Ontario. The Sunny Trails club near new Westminster, B.C. features permanent homes and village life for its members. Other clubs include Niagara Gymosophical Society near Welland, Ontario; the Pac Sun Club, Victoria; the Border Tans, Langley, B.C.; the Edmontans, at Edmontan; the Sunny Chinooks, at Calgary; the Manitoba Outdoor Club at Winnipeg; the Sunglades, near Toronto and the Atlantic Recreational Club at Bristol, N.B. These clubs range in membership from 50 to 200, and offer swimming, sunbathing, camping and sports facilities. Membership in nudist clubs is obtained by written application followed by careful screening process, with families and couples being given priority. Married men are barred unless their wives are also members. Nudists permit no improper conduct. Alcoholic beverages are banned from all camps. The Canadian Sunbathing Association stresses that nudism is not a religion or a fanatic cult. Its members are drawn from every walk of life, with professional groups predominating. Ages of members range from 17 to 70 but only those over 21 are entitled to active membership. The leading nudist publication in Canada is "Sunbathing for Health'. The official publication is "Sunny Trails'."

We agree with Howard, who sent this extract in and is one of the Mauritans, that it is "one of the best write-ups he had seen in a non-nudist book."

SWITZERLAND.

More than 800 members attended the annual conference of the 0rganisation of Naturists in Switzerland (O.N.S.) at their camp at Thielle on the shores of Lake Nouchatel. The roll of adult members stands at over 6000. A group of young members attended the INF Congress with their leader, Bruno Meier.

FRANCE.

The French Naturist Federation (FFN) reports 38 federations last year with a total membership of 8229 members. There are also 16 comps on the beaches, 4 swimming pools for nudists in the towns, 7 saunas and 5 gymnasia. They have a youth group with 106 members.

GERMANY.

Not far away from the Fashoft lighthouse in the bay of Kiel, is a naturist beach which has been newly approved by the authorities. It is situated on the shores of the Baltic Sea.

Twenty four clubs took part in D.F.K.'s volley ball tournament, providing 22 men's and 16 ladies' teams. The finals were held in Munich.

Holiday facilities for Berlin children have been found by D.F.K. As a result, 22 children are able to stay with families in Western Germany. Another 55 have been invited to local clubs and different groups of 30 will be able to use D.F.K. beach at Grube throughout this season.

Under the motto, "Banish spare time idleness", youth organisations of Bielefeld, recently held an exhibition to illustrate their use of leisure hours. The local naturist youth were invited to take part, and they exhibited photographs, drawings and magazines.

A new quarterly magazine entitled 'Eden' is now being published by the publishers of the A.S.A. official journal to discuss and illustrate nudism in all its broader aspects and is intended largely for the non-nudist. The current edition, No.2, will feature nudism and art. Future issues will discuss photography, morals, aesthetics, law etc.,

We read of two schools, entirely nudist, at Sunshine Acres and Oakdale Ranch, where the children learn to appreciate that school and life are part of each other and to learn to love and respect the human body, its health and beauty. They learn how to behave in their relationships with the opposite sex in a natural and harmonious way, more or less avoiding many of the difficult problems which generally manifest themselves during puberty.

YOU... AND YOUR FRIENDS.

By Ad, W.S. & H.S.

Often, when arriving at the club grounds, we can hear members telling of the excuses they had to make for being away for the day. It would appear that many of us are afraid to tell our friends where we are going.

Now, what's wrong here? Are we scared our friends will get a funny impression of us or that they will turn their backs on us? Why all the secrecy about it? If you can't tell them you are going to spend a glorious day sunbathing in the nude, are they really your friends? And if you are sure they will turn their backs on you, are they worth keeping as friends?

How about the people you work with during the week? Do you think they will jump and run if you tell them you spend a week-end in the sun-club? It night be a surprise, all right. They probably never thought about it before, but they know you and the reaction might be a curious interest which could very easily turn to a genuine interest. You will feel easier and happier when you don't have to make up yarns any more and can share your happy memories after every sunny week-end and... if there are any, which I doubt, who turn their backs on you, who is missing the most?

Skin Cancer

Australian medical authorities have been warning us in the papers recently of the danger of skin cancer, following prolonged exposure to the rays of the sun.

Without going into a lot of details, several facts present themselves:

The heat of the sun in Australia is fiercer than that of ours.

Few of us are lucky enough to enjoy overall sunbathing during the week and the few hours at the week-end are not enough to worry about.

And finally, we have NEVER heard reports of the incidence of skin cancer in ANY club; either in Australia or New Zealand.

Cartoon

While not denying the authority of these medical testimonies, in view of the foregoing it would appear that nudists in New Zealand have nothing to fear. It is well known that even doctors disagree and we therefore conclude by quoting Bamford Stanley, in the July issue of Health and Efficiency, where he says, in part: 'It is only when the direct rays of the sun strike the bare skin that the body can make the fullest use of its beneficent power, and sunlight can play its regenerative role in your life.'

Talking to Women

with JOAN TREANOR.

The appearance of Sun Tan Lotion and the increasing sight of brown bodies at our clubs gives a sure indication that Spring is gradually merging into Summer. At last we can tuck away those thick, heavy clothes that we loaded ourselves with during the Winter and early Spring, and look out our pretty, bright and sensible sun-frocks and play-suits.

Perhaps the new reader will be surprised. Here in a nudist publication, one sees a writer advocating clothes, but my word, no one is more clothes-conscious than the female sunbather. You see, we appreciate the value of clothing when, where and how it should be worn. The fact that we quickly discard our frocks and hats at the earliest opportunity when sunbathing is possible, surely doesn't mean that we have no regard for fashion! Indeed not.

I am very pleased with the response from readers of my page who have written in telling of their experiences. In my mail box the other day arrived a delightful piece from Glenis of the Canterbury Club. Her experiences and comments make entertaining and enlightening reading, so with the writer's permission here is...

ABOUT ME... by Glenis.

I was sixteen, when my father wrote a letter, which was to change the course of my whole life. He had applied for membership of a nudist club. At the time I was appalled and shocked. It wan true that I could accept nudism theoretically. I had seen and read nudist magazines, I had seen the film 'Garden of Eden' - but, nudism for us, nudism for me, that was quite out of the question.

A week later we were interviewed for membership. Anne was my sewing teacher from high school, and I had always admired her, for her beauty, her freshness, and her golden suntan. If she could be a nudist, then I could too. The mental barriers had collapsed. I had only to take the plunge.

The following Sunday we paid our first visit to the club grounds. Members met us in their car at the cross roads and directed us along shingly country lanes to the club grounds. My first reaction at seeing so many bare bodies was of shock and embarrassment. But everyone was so natural and preoccupied that my embarrassment soon wore off, and was replaced by intense interest. I watched men digging out tree stumps and boiling thermettes, ladies busy preparing lunch and young people playing tenikoit over the row of freshly planted poplar cuttings. My father and my younger brothers and sisters undressed, but my mother and I were too shy.

It was on my third visit that I finally took the plunge. It took all my determination and will power to throw aside those last garments, but having done so I felt exhilarated and content. Now I could be friends with all these pleasant people.

At the next Annual General Meeting I was elected to the social committee. I was only seventeen, but I think this position gave me the incentive and feeling of acceptance so necessary during those difficult adolescent years. I was a lone ranger, being the only teenager at the time, except for my brother who was fourteen. The next nearest in age was my sister, Carol, who was then only nine. But this did not seem to matter, as everyone was so friendly and kind. The warm companionship, the games, the feverish activity during these early days of rapid expansion, kept me interested and keen.

My five years as a nudist have been very happy ones, but how has this way of life benefited me? Nudism has improved my general health, and has given me a sun tan which is the envy of all my friends. Our family bond of love and unity has been further strengthened. I have met interesting people from all walks of life. Nudism seems to be synonymous with travel, for annual rallies draw people from all over the country. Hence I have visited Auckland, Wellington, Gisborne and other places of interest.

But most wonderful of all, nudism has brought me romance. My future husband and I were first introduced on the volleyball, court at "Pine Glades'. As Will is an American, I will soon be leaving my family and friends to travel to the United States. Here I know a warm welcome awaits me as several members of the Pen-Mar Club, Pennsylvania, have already written to me and have said "Come soon."

*******************

There are throughout the clubs in New Zealand, quite a few members with large families, and it would be of value to others I an sure, if the mothers of those families could write of their experience and how their families have benefited since embarking on social nudism. Once again I stress the fact, no names will be mentioned if the writer wishes to remain anonymous.

Recently, I had staying with me a student from Dunedin who is a champion Judo man. One night, as he was preparing to get ready to take part in a tournament, he decided to have a bath and relax and asked would I give his back a good massage. This I readily assented to do and told him to give a yell when ready. A while later a voice cone from the bathroom, "Joan, the water is soapy now." Well, having been a nurse and a nudist for years I thought that this was rather a different approach, so keeping eyes averted I went in and massaged his back. Having been used to seeing naked bodies flitting in and out of the bathroom every weekend, as we seem to have quite a few nudists pop in now and again, it took me quite a while to get used to an "outsider" again. I wonder if we naturists realise how we tend to take seeing the naked body for granted and that it just needs a small incident like the one I experienced to make us realise that others besides ourselves are still very body-conscious.

Within a few short weeks our Annual Rally is again to be held. Even though last year at Auckland we had a big attendance, I know that we are expecting an oven bigger gathering at Wanganui. This I think is a good time for those newcomers, as here is the opportunity to meet so many different people from other parts of N.Z. At this time of the year everybody is so friendly to each other, they all have one idea in mind, to enjoy themselves and to help others also to find the same enjoyment. I know that after the Rally is finished we often don't see any of those friendly folk until the following Rally, but what fun it is to see movie films from these functions and say "Why, there is Bill or Jack" etc., and "what great times we had playing tenikoit" or whatever you did at the Rally.

I, with my family, will be at the Rally again this year and I am hoping to meet many of you whom I have not already met. But to those of you who are unable to make it this year, I would still love to hear from you, and will reply either personally or through these pages. Just address your correspondence to,

Joan Treanor, P.O.Box 6359, Wellington.

Letter from Australia.

by Lindsay C.

As you arc probably well aware, there is quite a lot of activity in naturist circles in Australia these days, which is well covered in our renewed and revitalised "Solar", published by the energetic owners of Woodlands, which seems to have undergone a clean sweep. The Kings are inviting all local naturists to visit Woodlands next Xmas, when, to quote then - "we hope to round up all the sun clubs of Australia in the Australian Naturist Federation to be affiliated with the International Naturist Federation." I sincerely hope, and I think it will, be a more successful affair than the ill-fated Australasian Sunbathing Association launched a decade ago by a few starry-eyed no-hopers.

Adelaide, at long last, is coming good with the Tindo Club, with which I have boon associated. This is being organised by Ron and Joyce King, from the North Kent Club, England, and a nicer, saner couple you couldn't wish to meet. They have been out here some four years, now, and, when they first arrived, they promptly spent some time exploring the local coastline, to settle on a nice little cliff-surrounded beach within easy distance of Adelaide. This they used to visit regularly, and discovered that quite a few others also used to come there for nude swimming and sunbathing. The local spear fishers used to accept then, and even join them for afternoon tea, while police in the nearby township indicated that they weren't interested what they did with themselves in this area. After a time, when they had gathered a sufficiently large circle, they made arrangements to buy the land at the back of the beach for camping purposes.

However, progress caught up with them. Adelaide is the fastest growing city in Australia, owing to the Premier's policy of industrialisation, and one of the big oil companies announced plans for a big oil refinery there! This caught the group off balance, so a few of them banded together as a committee to look for a suitable site for a proper club. Fortunately, the afternoon newspaper was happy to give them a nice little write up when approached, and the resulting publicity brought then an offer of a large site which in some ways is even better than their original area. It's a peculiar place, because the nearby coastline is so shallow that at low tide the water line is a mile or so out to sea. The coastline itself consists of dunes, not of sand, but of very fine shell-grit, which supports a vegetation of shrubs and sometimes grasses. Through this runs a tidal creek, dammed at the mouth, which makes an ideal, made to order, swimming pool. Never was there a nudist club site so easy to develop! For cleared spaces, one has only to pull up a few bushes which are half-rotten anyway, rake out the shell-grit, and there is a fine white courtyard.

Most of this summer was spent in Sunday trips to the site, while the membership, now over 50, was gradually built up, and we got used to the area, and thought about how best it could be developed. The area has its disadvantages, but I think these can be overcome, and I see no reason, given local support, why the Tindo Club (aboriginal word for sun) should not be very successful.

As well as the club site, members have the use of a "Shangri-La" beach within a day's drive of Adelaide, where we arrange holiday camping trips. Over the New Year holidays, three car loads of people spent a whole week there soaking up the sun in glorious weather while Adelaide sweltered in heat waves over the century. This you will have read about anyway in my article in Solar No.3., as I seem to have ended up being a local correspondent for Tindo. Another article of mine on Bushwalking (tramping to you!) and Naturism will probably be in Solar No.5. The general theme will be equally applicable to New Zealand.

The Junior Section

The Junior Section

Hi Juniors!

At last the sun is in action again, club activity in swing and everything looking rosy for an excellent sunbathing season!

By now, the Junior Tenikoit teams will have been chosen, and practise is making them perfect. We are all looking forward to meeting up at Wanganui. I hear that the Wellington team may be arranging a little extra too!

With the season getting into gear we shall see new faces appearing at the club grounds. Some of these faces will belong to young boys and girls, those in the teens and below. How much better they would feel if they were welcomed with a friendly smile, a handshake and an invitation to come again and often.

Time now to plan your Summer Competitions, Swimming Carnival, P.T. programmes, inter-club visits and other interesting events. A well thought out, entertaining programme through the season will ensure keen attendance every week. There are many and varied ways and means of arranging activities within the club, keeping in mind of course that we don't want to over-organise. Leave time for just plain sunning and relaxing too.

Remember that I am always interested to hear from any of you, so pop me a letter some time. Good sunning, Ken.

Further highly commended essays from the junior competition follow.

"Why I Like Nudism." by Christine, aged 12.

Health.

The reasons why I like nudism is because there is fresh air circulating all over my body. My skin is absorbing the sun's rays which help prevent colds and bronchial trouble as well as help prevent T.B. as proved in the autumn issue of the Review.

Company.

Since joining I have made many friends which I am sure will remain throughout life as I have nudism in common and I'm sure as time goes on my circle of friends will increase through having the same interest.

Sport.

The sport at a nudist club is most invigorating as the body unhampered by clothes has complete freedom for all the muscles to work properly. Swimming with nothing on is an experience that everyone should try as it is delightful.

Community Spirit.

The community spirit amongst all those who belong to the nudist cult is something that those who are not members could not possibly understand. We are just one big, happy family and do not mind lending or borrowing from each other or helping others.

Advantages.

The advantages of belonging to the nudism association is that I can camp at any of the clubs throughout New Zealand as well as being able to visit overseas clubs should I be fortunate enough to be able to travel.

And here is yet another essay that has been highly commended.

"Why I Like Nudism." by Marion, aged 13.

When I was about ten I used to love running around in my birthday suit with my brothers and sisters. Now I am older I seem to love it more. I feel free when I have not got any clothes on. On hot days at home in the weekends I felt boxed in, or else I felt as though I has too many clothes on. I always had the impulse to strip. You are able to enjoy the sun and get up a good tan without having to worry about strap marks or togs or clothes. I like being in my birthday suit because I feel free without any care of clothes. When Mum and Dad decided to go to the club, I and my brothers and sisters were all excited, and since I've been going to the club I have never regretted joining.

Going to the club has made many friends for me. Everybody is treated as a brother or sister and we do not mind doing something for someone else. We all treat each other as one big family.

Since I have joined the Sun and Health Club I have not been sick or had a cold. It keeps you fit and healthy, running and playing with no clothes on. It lets all your muscles move freely and keeps your skin healthy by the rays of the sun. I like swimming with nothing on because it gives you a cool, soothing and refreshing feeling all over your body, not just where your togs don't cover. I have yet to experience camping at a sun and health club. From what I have heard and from what I have seen I think it would be great fun. When I am older I hope to go to other camps and meet other friends and even go to camps over the seas as well.

The party that went from A.0.H.C. in three cars to Ruapehu enjoyed themselves very much and and grateful to Jim of Wellington for his excellent organisation of the weekend. Much wallowing in hot pools was done in and around Rotorua on the way back to make up for the vile weather.

Unless the rain is coming down in buckets, each week-end sees a few faithfuls out at the club and even bit of work done. Unfortunately we have had to pull our horns in to the extent that we have named the coming year 'Consolidation Year' - a time to save and ensure that we have money put aside to meet our commitments when debentures have to be repaid.

Indications are that a good turn-out from A.0.H.C. will be at the National Rally. it's hoped that many of those who visited us last year will come again and that those who haven't been yet will give it a go. Get your secretary to drop us a line.

After eight continuous years of office, Karin and Gerald announced that they would be resigning from the Committee after the Half-Annual Meeting on 30th. October. The Committee elected Norman to take Gerald's place as President and Helen to fill the vacancy left by Karin, whilst Jack will take over Norman's position as Treasurer.

We held our really first annual meeting recently and although numbers are small, we feel we have the nucleus of a happy, little club and we believe that our grounds cannot be surpassed for natural beauty, with its abundance of native flora. Finance permitting, we intend to install a sandpit, slide and splash pool for the children and the erection of an outdoor shower is a "must" for this season.

A cordial invitation is extended to members of other clubs. There is plenty of room for tents and our club-house has limited accommodation available. No power or bedding yet, but city water is available. Visitors may stay as long as they like. Several of our members will be attending the National Rally at Wanganui.

Wanganui Sun Club. (Members.) Box 410, Wanganui.

We still have a lot to do to have the grounds ready for the Rally, but several willing helpers are slogging away at every opportunity and all will be completed in tine. Eighteen of us visited Fiveacres at Wellington recently and we hope we recruited labour for Labour Day from the locals. Please let us know how many visitors we can expect for the Rally as soon as possible, so that we can make our plans accordingly. You may stay as long as you like after the Rally.

Most successful social evenings continue to entertain the members and help to build up the kitty at the same time. In addition to the presentation of a 3 act play shortly, other functions include a Guy Fawkes celebration, a private screening of two major nudist films, a Fancy Dress Dance including a two hour revue (to be repeated at Wanganui) and a Xmas Party for the snail fry.

Our Youth Organisers are busy laying plans for increasing the interest among the juniors. We may see the results of some of these at Wanganui.

The Ruapehu party thoroughly enjoyed themselves, despite the weather and look forward to next winter.

Leaders for work parties have been appointed and Fiveacres is a hive of activity these days... new lawns, new fence, more flowers and trees and more paint. The A.G.M. is to be asked to approve the installation of a circulation and filtration plant for the pool, which is otherwise nearly ready.

We have now approved of club colours... black and orange.

There is always a welcome to members of other clubs who may be passing through. Drop us a line.

Canterbury Sun & Health Club Inc. (Members.) Box 1823, Christchurch.

We are pleased to report that great progress has been made on our cabins and already new paint on then has made a big improvement. Some of the members have decided that the existing size is too small and so extensions have already started.

With the fine weather we have been experiencing lately, much work has been done on the grounds and the sounds of the new fences being erected around our swimming pool and sunbathing area are also pleasant.

A big improvement to our club is the installation of electricity and our club electrician has been very busy laying the wires etc., watched by the usual crowd of would-be helpers. It will be a great moment to us all and especially the older members, when the lights first go on. Later, the wiring will be extended to our cabins, which also will bc a big advantage, especially to the "campers".

With the improvement of the weather we are very glad to welcome more new members, and we are always pleased to hear of any new prospective members.

Cattle got in our grounds during the winter and did some damage to the lawns, and some minor damage was done by young vandals with an air rifle during the school holidays. The worst of this has been repaired and we are all set for what we hope will be another very successful season. The pool has been painted light blue, and refilled. We have started advertising in the daily press again and enquiries are already coming in.

We are assured of some new faces during the coming season as Sybil, Ruth and Faye have all had babies since last season.
