GUEST EDITORIAL

How many times over the years have we heard from members of our movement asking for tolerance from the general public. Live and let live they say, and yet these same people are not tolerant of the views of others.

I refer to the people who are critical of others who wish to remain anonymous, there are many and varied reasons for them not seeking publicity and we must respect their views. There have been many stalwarts who have worked long and hard to improve facilities and amenities in clubs, and the movement has been enriched by their efforts, are we going to.say to them we don't want you if you are not prepared to stand up and be counted, I certainly hope not.

By the same token the critics in the main are also working hard, trying to get the acceptance of government and the general public, but let us hope that they do not lose sight of the fact that not everyone worships the same God.

The movement is made up of a good cross section of people of all races, colours and creeds, so there is bound to be differing ideas, don't let us become like door to door evangelists who only see their way as the right one.

Let us all do our part for the good of the movement in our own way but having tolerance toward our fellow members.

COME SOUTH THIS SUMMER

A lot of publicity has already been given to the Christchurch rally this year. If your mind is not already made up, why don't you give a holiday in the South Island some consideration. Maybe you are not very sports-minded, you could not stand watching miniten all day. Fair enough, there are many like you.

You could still make Pineglades your basis from where to make day trips and join us in only the activities you are interested in. There are some very nice trips in and around Christchurch. There is the Town Hall, worthy of a very good look. We have Orana wild-life park, where the animals roam freely, and humans are restricted to the safety of their cars. Also close by is the Wild-life Reserve and Christchurch International Airport, which is the envy of other New Zealand cities.

Some people can spend hours pacing the pedestrians only Cathedral Square, with the Wizard, the Bible-lady and others speaking their mind to whoever wants to listen.

A Saturday trip to New Brighton, where all the shops are open and the main road again preserved for pedestrians, is unique. A nice sandy beach and the Mini zoo add to the fun.

If you like some trips outside Christchurch, we can offer Akaroa, a distance of approximately 70 km. Two thirds of the road is typical for Canterbury, as flat as a pancake. The last part is across the hills of Banks Peninsula, with great scenic beauty to land you in an originally French village in a bay full of blues and greens, dotted with the liveliest colours imaginable. Another longer day trip will take you via the West Coast Road over Porter's Pass to The Arthur's Pass National Park. You will cross the width of the Canterbury Plains, climb moderately steep mountains, pass some well known ski fields, hopefully without snow at that time, and see for yourself why Arthur's Pass became a must for every American tourist. With luck you might see a Kea in its only natural habitat in the world.

Do you like fishing? Then bring your gear. There are some great rivers, not too far from Christchurch.

There is plenty to see or to do, you could have the most exhausting holiday, you ever had. We will have all the details for you, when you join us at Pineglades.

And after the rally, why not visit one of the other great sun clubs in the South Island. But don't forget to write to their secretaries first.

Hope to see you soon.

SOMETHING CONCRETE

What are the ingredients of progress? May I suggest - need, enthusiasm, new blood, opportunity, and not least a catalyst.

In the middle of that beautiful summer of 77/78 the need became very apparent at The Orchard for more miniten facilities. An influx of new members, many keen to try out the new game (to them) of miniten, caused our one concrete court to become overloaded. The predictable result - wrangles, shortened games, and long waits for a game.

The catalyst was provided in the form of David, a fairly new young single member who was already proving a formidable opponent on the miniten court. He asked the obvious question - why don't we build another court? WE gave the obvious answer - NO MONEY.

This is where the matter normally would end, but not this time. David proved his enthusiasm by producing a very substantial cheque towards a court building fund. This produced response from others, and within a week we had $580 towards the estimated building cost of $620.

Plans had been made in general terms as to the layout of future courts, and spare reinforcing mesh was stored for just such an occasion. One week later, after the site had been surveyed and pegged, new members and old, including women and children, were out with grubbers, shovels and spades digging out (or filling where necessary) an area 32ft x 64ft. That first weekend also saw the reinforcing steel laid and the steel poles for holding either miniten or volley ball nets set in place.

Eight-thirty a.m. on the second Saturday saw our band of keen workers and a large ready-mix concrete truck on site starting to pour his first four cubic metre load. By lunch time eighteen metres of beautiful, expensive concrete had been poured and vibrated smooth. A break for weary backs and parched throats, and then for one or two a punishing session on the end of a Kelly float. A good job to remain ignorant about and stay away from if possible.

The third week saw me spending more time on my knees than I have done for many years. Hand grinding the whole surface with a power side grinder was not essential, but certainly helped produce a nice smooth, but still grippy, surface on the concrete. Apart from the knees, hand grinding also gives the back hell, and is guaranteed to smother you in white concrete dust until you are spitting out concrete blocks. Nothing is too good for our members!

Painting in the lines for miniten and volleyball completed the job, but for one thing. Our jack of all trades, Eric, produced an excellent made to measure net from an old fishing net, and we were in business. Only 22 days from the first donation to first game of miniten on the Sunday afternoon. Our congestion problems solved, at least for another year or two, until a growing membership makes the need for another court necessary.

The concrete was poured all in one large slab, well reinforced, and has proved an unqualified success!

Our calculations were slightly out, as we needed an extra two metres of concrete above the estimate, and the final cost just topped $800 - but, what the hell - where there's a will there's a way.

But really you can't win! The result - more people playing mininiten - and a demand for miniten bats we can't supply. So, a winter session of production line bat making has been the result!

As long as we can retain that drive, enthusiasm, and new blood mentioned earlier, The Orchard will continue to progress and this coming summer will be a beauty.

Give yourself a treat, come visit us this year, - You'll never regret it.

PROFILE OF AN AUSTRALIAN NUDIST CLUB

THE THREE BEARS SUN-HEALTH CLUB.

Click: Click: went the cameras.lt was photography day at the Three Bears. This is not a new name on the nudist scene as it had its beginning in July 1973. Just 40 kilometres from Brisbane along the Pacific highway near Beenleigh, you'll find The Three Bears.

Owned by George & Barbara Cruickshank together with little bear Anne, it is nestled among dense natural bushland and provides a natural, carefree way of life.

Although only five years old, The Three Bears has continued to progress at a steady pace and offers many facilities for those who wish to stay a day, a week, or longer. It is a well organised family club.

There is ample room for caravans, tents and parking. Much hard work is in progress at present in readiness for the 10th Australian Nudist Federation Convention and Rally, which this year is being hosted by The Three Bears.

Six courts are now available for tennis, miniten, volleyball and badminton. A pool, trampoline and table tennis provide popular entertainment and with Queensland's glorious weather all year round these facilities are well used and appreciated. Another pool is to be provided towards the end of the year.

Not unlike any other enterprise, the managing of a nudist club is a very challenging task and George and Barbara are aware of the hard work required to give the members the facilities they would like.

This coming Christmas, 1978, the Australian Nudist Federation holds its 10th Annual Convention and Rally in the grounds of The Three Bears. During the Rally many top class nudist teams will compete in the many sporting activities. There will also be the opportunity to meet members from other clubs as far away as Perth and Darwin.

The Australian Nudist Federation Convention and Rally will be the first ever to be held in Queensland. This in itself is a great moment for The Three Bears and promises to be the best Rally yet.

Beware of the Bare Bears.

NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM RALLY

Rally MascotA heavy covering of snow was no deterrent for Piny Bare's little helpers at the last working bee. The grounds have to be ready for the big event. The facilities at Pineglades have been upgraded to ensure adequate hot water and ablutions. Every service will be up to Local Authority regulations.

The shop will be well stocked with all things a nudist needs away from home.

Kitchens are available at each end of the grounds, but to relieve Mum, at lunchtime, between 12 and 2, light snacks will be on sale.

Children's activities will be from 9am till noon.

Sports will finish at 1pm, except for finals. (See timetable)

NOTE: The theme for the New Year's Eve ball is The Circus.

REMEMBER: The cost is all inclusive.

Finally a word of warning, and to scotch a rumour: Dehydration can lead to a lot of UNPLEASANT SYMPTOMS. There are two main causes, one is over-exertion in the sun, the other alcohol. Yes alcohol dehydrates. Take it easy and use salt tablets.

There is no truth to the rumour, that Piny Bare's legs were modeled by a certain National President.

We don't really care how you spell Piny Bare, Piney Bare or Piny Bear, just be there. Use him for identification -

N.Z.N.F. OFFICERS REPORTS

President:        IAN FAIRBROTHER.

In recent weeks a large number of back issues of this magazine have flowed into our household. Should any of you get the opportunity then read these past numbers, there is a lot we have forgotten about the nudist movement in our efforts to keep up with the times.

The one point that really comes through is the forward thinking and openness with the public of those involved say 20 odd years ago - when considering those times it makes the present membership joggers instead of pacesetters.

Somehow I can't help thinking that somewhere along the road we must have stood still, let's hope it is not allowed to happen again.

Women's
Representative: JENNIFER FAIRBROTHER

Our society, meaning N.Z. society, is supposedly based on the wheel of home life, the Family Circle. So often today this Circle is broken which makes a rough journey for those concerned, then those around them and so the ripples spread throughout the community. The many welfare groups are attempting to correct this by creating interests for the various people be they "oldies", town wives, teenagers, younger children etc. etc. We in our nudist clubs have something that all these groups are aiming at but are going about in the wrong way. They are still splitting that Circle, but we have the whole family together. (Yes, we have our Nudist Youth Clubs but they are still with the main group.) We must, each single member, get out amongst the people and help them to realize that what we have to offer is what society is badly in need of today. The Family all doing things together, be it digging holes for swimming pools, painting sheds or just playing sport and enjoying life as a whole unit. We do not have a Men's Day, a Women's Day, we do not bar 'under age' or children. A report sent to schools called The Johnson Report, among other things recommended that the school takes on the role of the Extended Family. That word Family again.

Where we are concerned people place too much emphasis on the word nudist. They do not look beyond the unclothed body into what our movement really has to offer our society today.

Secretary:         LES WELLINGTON.

Delegates will, by now, have informed club members of the results of the 1978 ½ Annual General Meeting of the Federation held at Taupo during Queen's Birthday Weekend. I feel all present at the meeting, and this includes the large number of delegates and observers, would have been pleasantly surprised with the manner and ease in which discussions took place and the unusually early time the meeting concluded.

Perhaps the time is approaching when we should consider a change in format for our ½ A.G.M. Rather than just formal meeting procedures I feel we should contemplate holding a type of conference, with speakers being invited to present papers or chair discussions on relevant subjects. This would bring a greater sense of interest into our proceedings, provide stimulus for future progress, activities for other than delegates and thoughts of other parties. However back to the present, of concern to us is the fact that some five Federation

Officers are not seeking re-election for next year. I would hope that clubs and club members will be giving this particular factor consideration in the next few months.

In conclusion I am pleased to advise that we will have a representative at the INF Congress which is being held in due course.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

As a concerned owner of rocks, I must add my voice to those who expressed concern at the centre pages in issues No. 85 and 86. It's easy to see the rocks protesting at being smothered, sat upon and used for erotic purposes. My Pet Rock and were deeply shocked by this sexploitation and he feels he could not safely go to the Sun Club grounds or the beach without his rock protection. He was pleased to hear that you have promised not to do any more of those Rock shots, keep up the good work.

Concerned Pet Rock Owner
and Mother of Two.

Dear Sir,

In reply to letters in the March issue with regard to depilation, the arguments for and against appear to be the result of what one believes to be right.

These sort of trivialities make the nudist movement a laughing stock with the rest of the population. Why not come straight out and say, I don't like it, in our club we don't approve of it, make it a condition of membership if you feel strongly about it. This is the same as some clubs which do not allow smoking, drinking, body contact in public and the like.

The result of making these rules would then have the desired effect, for those who are of the same opinion. On the other hand having all these rules would not be attractive for persons of a more mature outlook. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, in different countries one wears nose jewellery, genital ornaments, bands around the neck, bones through the nose or ear lobes, just to mention a few, as a means of adorning and beautifying, so what is so wrong about depilation as a fashion. Let us have no rush of letters saying that this gook must like these customs or even depilation.

Whatever turns you on man, you want to shave, let your beard grow, shave your pubes, trim them, hang bells around your neck, whatever, but don't come this nonsense, not being natural - more natural and the like, R.T

Lay down rules, lay down what is acceptable to your group, commune, club; change them when no longer applicable, make sure that everyone is aware of what the current ideas are. People can make up their own minds whether to join a liberal, conservative. progressive, singles only, swinging, anything goes, vegetarian, married, non-drinking, smoking, no pets, no names, no cameras - club.

Anyone for a tolerant nudist club?

Sincerely,
Dick Van Der Vliet.

Dear Sir,

I enjoyed reading the June article by Hugh Young of Gisborne. His comments regarding offending people led me to pen this letter, as a recent experience of mine may be of some use in the push for free beaches.

At the tail end of last summer I took off by myself to the east coast of the Coromandel for a few days holiday, intending to explore the area. However, I was no sooner there than I found a delightful, relatively secluded beach only a few minutes walk from the motel. The opportunity for nude swimming and sunbathing was too good to miss, and the weather was kind enough to allow this on each of the five days there. During this period I encountered a total of only some fifteen to twenty people on the beach and in each case I politely asked if they objected to my sunbathing activity. I'm delighted to say that not one objected; in fact, one couple and one of two young women decided to follow suit, albeit at a distance What struck me as remarkable was that these people were not all young, liberated sun-lovers but mainly middle-aged or elderly.

I'm unable to believe that my personal charm could have overwhelmed their scruples or that I frightened them into agreement, so can only assume that they genuinely didn't mind my nudity I know that it's risky to use such a statistically small sample, but the inference is exciting. Has a survey of public opinion ever been conducted actually at a beach, as opposed to the home or work environment where most opinion poll questionnaires are normally considered?

Sincerely,
Jeff.

Dear Sir,

The response to the letter I put in the last magazine for back copies for the Gisborne Sun Club was fantastic. Thank you to all those people who sent me letters and magazines, especially to Ardent Admirer who complimented the magazine and encouraged it to carry on the good work. This person is not a member of a nudist club, in fact I received correspondence from a number of people who are not members of nudist clubs. The G.S.C. now only needs No. 41 (1966) and any copies printed before August 1961. I must add here that all the letters that were signed were from men. I hope women read our magazine!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Fairbrother.

ACCESS PROGRAMME PRODUCED BY N.Z. NUDIST FEDERATION INC.
WATCH LISTENER AND PAPERS FOR TIME SLOT - BOBBIE.

Dear Sir,

May I congratulate you on your recent photographs. In particular the cover girl on No. 80, the centrefold in No. 85 which did, the centrefold and the picture on page 15 of No. 87 which might offend non nudist club members who do not understand that the basis of nudism is to accept the entire human body and its sexuality as being God's most beautiful creations.

Self conscious leg crossing as practised by a (dressed) national TV personality is provocative. Nudism is based on respect, understanding and trust. When a beautiful girl sticks her chest out and walks straight up to you with a confident twinkle in her eyes, no decent man can betray her trust, by having mean thoughts. In Australia, understanding, acceptance and trust between those who swim nude and the general public is growing quickly. Recently I saw a crowded nudist beach only 50 feet below a cliff-side public footpath along which thousands of non nudist men, women and children walked. I also saw crowds of nudist swimmers along the bank of a river along which water skiers and other boat people continually passed.

I was recently present when six fishermen sailed into a bay, ran out their nets and hauled in half a tonne of fish onto a crowded nudist beach much to the delight of the nudist children. Also the way tradesmen now drive into nudist grounds is bringing nudism out into the open to be seen and understood. It attracts thousands to join in wearing their swimsuits, but they soon feel so silly they take them off. If we could only get every nudist swimmer to each year invite two or more friends to join in, nudists would increase like the rabbits did. We must encourage people to swim nude where it is accepted. To maintain and to influence others to maintain high moral standards and to take their rubbish home.

But we must not confront and fight unco-operative authorities as the Americans did, and stir up strong opposition which might overwhelm a minority which we still are.

We must not be complacent, many a best team lost a football match in the last quarter.

Sincerely,
Sandy McDonald.

Dear Sir,

Recently I had a trip to Australia, and as I am a member of the Free Beach Group, I wrote to four Australian Clubs.

I took a photographic copy of my membership card, plus a photo of myself and enclosed these.

I got one reply from the Hesperides Club but unfortunately their reply arrived after I left. I appreciate the action of their secretary who gave me two phone numbers for contact.

This is contrary to the item on page seven in issue No. 87 from the N.Z.N.F. officers reports.

It is good taste that when one receives a letter one should answer it, no matter how short it may be. I now have a bad impression of the Australian Clubs due to their own fault.

I hope that the N.Z. clubs don't fail this way.

Good Naturism

EDITOR'S NOTE.

In N.Z. each club reserves the right to admit visitors. Prior application on a Secretary to Secretary basis is the norm. As the Free Beach Group is not yet affiliated to the N.Z.N.F. the I.N.F. passport is not available to its members.

FREE BEACH REPORT:

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Last summer season has shown a steady improvement of the free area situation here in Victoria.

Although Point Impossible has still not been officially recognised it appears to have been accepted as an unclad bathing area. No problems were seen or reported and this has resulted in increasing numbers using the beach, also at nearby Point Addis and Jan Juc which are ocean beaches.

A further search of the inner harbour along the Bellarine Peninsula has failed to find a suitable sheltered secluded area which could be used when a southerly wind makes conditions at the point "impossible".

The most encouraging news came recently from the Murry River based nudist resort "Bangalee" near Tocumwal, where proprietors Frank, Brigita and Manfred obtained official approval from local councils and police to use adjoining river beaches for unclad bathing.

Unfortunately seventy nude bathers were convicted during last summer from the Sandringham and Black Rock areas despite efforts to persuade Council that this, the closest nude beach to the city of Melbourne should be made legal, along with Point Impossible and Sunnyside at Mt Eliza.

The May 10 Age newspaper poll has once again disclosed that 72% of the general public still approve of legal designated areas for unclad usage. It also revealed that the younger better educated show greater acceptance of public nudity.

In June the Australian Labour Party included in their State policy for Youth, Sport and Recreation, "that in consultation with Local Government they will set aside suitable beach and inland areas for nude bathing".

July now sees the publication and distribution to all State M.P.s in the relevant portfolios, along with various officials of departments, of the excellent Submission for "unclad bathing in prescribed areas" from the Sandringham Free Beach Action Group.

The campaign for legal areas, begun in 1972, has been a success overall, but in some states like here in Victoria it is going to take a little longer to succeed!

However, with the fine work being carried out during the winter months, we are optimistic of official recognition for the coming summer season.

Mary and Ted Weston.

NEW ZEALAND

Recently I was asked to comment on a letter which stated that we should concentrate our efforts on a better understanding by the public of our aims, than to just propagate Free Beaches.

In the first place, I query if the word "understanding" is the right word. I do not think that it is necessary to understand someone's principles if they are different from your own. Someone may have religious principles and as a result, he may differ from my own life style. It is not necessary that I understand his religious principles, but I respect his right to his own life style.

Is this not what all life is about, tolerance of each others life style. If there are people who do not want to see a nude body, then that is quite in order and I have nothing against such people. I live my life and they are living theirs. But the situation changes if this first category of people try to force other people to think and act as they want. We as nudists do not say, ban these people from this or that. We will always have as one of our principles tolerance for others.

The second question, if we should propagate Free Beaches, is more or less answered now. The more than 50% of the N.Z. population that has indicated in favour of Free Beaches should be shown consideration by the anti-Free Beach group.

Why can't there be tolerance from both sides. New Zealand is big enough for both groups to live side by side and respect each others viewpoints.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

The Gisborne Sun Club has really been attaining its old ambitions of mixing with the general public over the last few months. A Lion's Club held a meeting and social hot-tub evening at Mecca and plan to hold more there. A combined Young Farmers Clubs spent a games day on the grounds followed by another social evening, unfortunately our sun had deserted us this day so we were unable to introduce them to miniten or our volley ball team but they did play Tenniquoits in the rain! We have bookings from other clubs in town which is pleasing as it means our amenities are being used even when there is no sunshine about.

The cabaret was once again a success with a sell out three weeks before the event, Thank you to those other club members who visited us for this function and we hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Interest shown by more family groups wanting to join our club seems to indicate people are becoming more aware of the fact that nudist clubs have something to offer all members of the family. There are very few clubs, other than nudist clubs, that cater for the enjoyment of the complete family circle.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

Recently the club held its 29th Annual General Meeting and it was most pleasing to see the excellent response from the 150 members who turned out on the day.

Our prime topics for discussion this year were the revision of the Constitution and Rules and of course the progress made toward the sewerage reticulation of our property.

The negotiations toward our sewerage reticulation is progressing favourably and the next few months should see the project under way. However it may be some months before we have the job fully connected to the city sewer.

Our winter programme is in full swing again with swim nights being held monthly and Sauna evenings held every Sunday.

Minor works being carried out at the club includes the upgrading of the shower block and also the clubhouse kitchen.

When this much needed facelift is completed, our buildings will be as modern as any facilities offered anywhere in New Zealand. A tree planting project will be carried out soon in the top paddock valley and this is our club's annual project toward Conservation Week 1978.

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

Spring has sprung at long last, and those who hibernate for the winter are beginning to show a cautious nose at The Orchard again. For September is the month when our lovely property literally blossoms into life Our hundreds of fruit trees wear a glorious mantle of white or pink, lambs gambol in the outer paddocks, and our tame photographer's camera runs hot recording our loveliest lasses in front of a perfect background

With the prospect of a long hot summer stretching before us, I forecast a new influx of people of all ages who can cast aside their cares and inhibitions, and join us at The Orchard. There must be readers of "The Naturist" in Otago who would love to share our grounds, amenities, and friendliness. Take this as a personal invitation - your inquiries are welcome, and put you under no obligation.

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB INC.

Recently our club has been in demand to supply Guest Speakers for various organisations around the district. This has not only given us a good opportunity to promote our club and nudism, but also to dispel many misconceptions that the general public often seem to have.

As with most clubs, winter can be a quiet time. We have endeavoured to keep an interest in the club by running a social afternoon on the last Sunday of the month This included a Disco, run by the Youth Group, one Sunday afternoon.

A group of us attended the N.Z.N.F. ½ A.G.M. at Taupo. Besides being a time for business, it is a good time for meeting and making friends. A bigger group attended the Gisborne Sun Club Cabaret. The highlight of that night was the performance of 'Elvis'. We had a terrific weekend and are now expecting a good crowd of visitors at our own Cabaret on September 9.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC.

Getting ready for the rally might be our main aim, it is not our only activity. After the A.G.M. the committee pulled out all the stops, to keep things going and lively. After all we don't want to meet as virtual strangers, once the sun starts shining again

We had our sauna nights, a Bavarian Evening and our Saturday afternoons in the clubhouse. We saw some movies on previous rallies and came together for some work on Sundays.

There is still work to be done, to bring the grounds up to the standards we have set for ourselves, but we are confident we will make it in time.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

The final land mortgage payment was made on August 1, 1978. The club is now one of that small group who can say "We are freehold, we don't owe nobody outside of the club." It's been a pretty hard row to hoe for a small club, with a small membership but they've made it. So while beating our own drum, a big thank you to members past and present. Without you none of this would have been possible.

The dedicated few have laboured long through the winter on ground maintenance and improvement. The two gales in July wreaked havoc with the fences and re-stabilising them is a strenuous and lengthy task.

Kowhai needs folk with a touch of the pioneer spirit. If you're interested why not drop them a line. Fees are reasonable and freehold land means you are not asked for a debenture. In return you become part of an established club, with the best sea views in the top half of the North Island.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

With the onset of winter, and the roar of chainsaws, we soon demolished our stock pile of firewood, and at the time of writing, we are finding it hard to fulfil the balance of our orders. This worthwhile project has cleared up the bush area and helped tremendously with the finance of the new clubhouse.

We held a working bee to pour the bond beam, and when I say 'pour' it sure did! We all got soaked, but at least we got the beam completed.

We have had half of our portals delivered, and are well on the way for the rest, we have a lot of work ahead of us, but with the support we have had this winter we should have a good summer.

We have also raised funds at the flea market and various other events, a good time being had by all who participated.

The club's financial year has also been changed, so that it begins and ends in the middle of winter, to solve a lot of problems around Christmas with the clashing of holidays and the folding stuff.

As you can see we have not been idle, (which is the best way to keep warm!) and are looking forward to the warmth and sun that must surely return, and of course the Rally.

NORTHERN SUNSEEKERS INC.

Our last three attempts to get a letter printed, must have landed in Con's OUT tray and some people may have wondered what has happened to us.

It has been a marvellous summer since New Year and in spite of a long drought which lasted until mid-May, the stream at our Club has kept on running. Attendance by members at our grounds has diminished and committee members are somewhat puzzled at this trend as the weather cannot be blamed. It can be discouraging, especially if you are one of our more distant members, to make an effort and find only a few there and this does not encourage people to come again. We are hoping for a bigger regular turnout this coming season.

A few of us have made visits to Auckland clubs and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of meeting old friends and making new ones. Our skill at sport is not very high, but we always enjoy the experience, and have even been accused of too much frivolity.

Some of our members have questioned the value of belonging to N.Z.N.F. and suggested it might be better to have all finances spent within the Club. We are intending to debate this issue at our A.G.M. in September and it should make quite an interesting discussion.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

As I write this we are in the middle of winter, cool mornings and lots of wet days. However, when you read this, we will be fast approaching the spring flush signaling the oncoming summer.

In reflection over the winter our club has retained the summer companionship. Sauna evenings and socials have kept the club spirit alive.

Of special note was the opportunity for club members to learn the discipline of massage. We were fortunate to have a professional masseur offer his time free and organise evening classes to teach the art of massage. The techniques and subsequent benefits will enable those who attended to be able to sooth aching limbs and relieve muscle tension. Our summer sports team should benefit so watch out any would be challengers this summer!!!

Again we invite those from other clubs to contact us when they pass through Rotorua Communicate and associate!

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB INC.

Congratulations to Steve Newns of Tindo for giving the germ of a great idea in N.Z. Naturist No. 85. As a result of his letter which suggested closer trans-Tasman ties, we have now become Sister Club to the South Auckland Nudist Club. At present both Clubs are preparing Club histories to exchange. Although the idea hasn't yet been fully developed, the long term potential seems enormous. We are very proud that the South Auckland Nudist Club have joined us in this venture, which we believe is another first for Australasian nudism, and which could bring considerable benefits to the members of both clubs.

Despite the winter weather our members have been kept active with our weekly swim and sauna nights and gymnasium nights. The social side has also been busy with a great club birthday dinner and a celebration of midwinter's day. It's nice to know the sun is on the way back.

We are still negotiating with the Department of Capital Territory for the lease of a club site (all land in the ACT is leased from the Government). Recently we almost gained a lease, but at the last minute found the Government had other plans for the area. We'll get a block yet! The main thing is that we have a thriving active club with an enthusiastic membership.

Visitors from other clubs are always welcome to visit us, either by making written contact through Box 242 Woden ACT, or by phoning one of our committee, who are listed in our newsletter. Roll on summer.

NORTHSIDE COUNTRY CLUB

It has been quite some time since we last provided a report for the N.Z. Naturist, however, as with life in general, things are forever changing, hence this report. Over the last two years Northside has been quietly but noticeably changed in both policy and appearance, which has shown a new emergence in enthusiasm and willingness of the members to participate in all our activities.

Many major projects have been undertaken in the past two years commencing with the securing of a 20 year lease so as to guarantee our continued and uninterrupted existence, then came our complete revision and presentation of our constitution which closed a lot of 'loop-holes' and strengthened many 'doubtful' articles. In essence we secured a tight, workable constitution and established our abode for the next 20 years with a lease that is favourable to the club.

A building and works programme was then commenced to provide for better facilities and to attract more members to our fold. It was felt a programme outlining our aims over the next five years or so would be more practical rather than charging into the projects with no planning at all. Already the club has committed many thousands of dollars in providing extensive and urgently needed road works, an entirely new brick toilet and shower block with five ladies, three men and urinal toilets along with four hot and cold showers (one enclosed) and an 8' x 8'6" laundry with washing machine and basin facilities. These projects should be completed in about 2-3 months ready for our summer season. Further works which will be undertaken this year include the finalisation of a 150' x 50' utilities court area incorporating volleyball, miniten, mini golf and quoits. A slight slope overlooking this area will be terraced and sown with lawn for sun-baking or spectating purposes, hopefully this will be completed by summer also. Other objectives or projects of the club are to upgrade all existing tennis, volleyball and badminton courts, acquire a new clubhouse (already started) and to provide further barbecue facilities for the members.

Later in the year we will be embarking on a very exhaustive membership drive as it is felt that coupled with the new facilities and young fresh committee and ideals we should attract a large number of interested prospective inquiries. All in all we should have a great year to celebrate our fourth annual Nudist Ball in Melbourne (November 10) and to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Australian Nudist Federation which held its inaugural meeting at Northside Country Club on 31st December, 1968. So 1978 looks like being the year we have been searching for to really get going.

Our Social Committee is being kept busy with parties, dinners, movies and stage shows being organised for the club. The response has been fantastic to everything that has been undertaken and once again gives usa feeling of supreme confidence for 1978.

Any Kiwi's visiting Melbourne who would like to attend any of our socials or visit our very progressive club should contact me (Heather) at Melbourne 203-092 (Home) or alternatively write to Northside Country Club, P.O. Box 107, South Melbourne, 3205.

So until our next report, I wish you all that makes a good nudist happy.

DARWIN SUN CLUB DEVELOPS NEW CLUB SITE

The sun club of North Australia in Darwin, faces the challenge of developing a new fifty-three acre site.

After prolonged negotiations with the Government, the club has been awarded a lease for the new site twenty-six kilometres from Darwin.

It followed orders to quit from the original site, seventeen kilometres from the city, which was part of a land acquisition order.

The new site features gently sloping hills, a creek fringed with pandamus palms and a worked-out quarry, all of which have their own scenic attractions.

The creek, which runs for eight months of the year, has provided an early swimming hole for a band of workers (alas, disappointingly small).

In the first months of operations, a firebreak has been created around the site perimeter, and a games area has been cleared - for four volleyball courts, one badminton, one miniten and one tennis court.

A shade pavilion - on top of one of the hills - has been built, and other work includes the provision of a piped water supply.

Projects to be taken in hand include the building of a toilet block and a permanent clubhouse.

The first months of moving to a new site has placed a big responsibility on club president, Roger Millard, who has worked like a trojan,

However, he and Julie and Andrew and Samantha keep on smiling, and insist they enjoy it all.

In its eight-year history, Darwin Sun Club has had its ups and downs. It suffered badly from the 1974 Cyclone Tracy, but it rebuilt soundly.

It now faces the further challenges of developing a new site, It will mean a lot of hard work by all members, plus the never ending task of raising finance,

The challenges are being met to create grounds which both the club and the movement as a whole will be proud of.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST HOLIDAY RANCH

Hi friends

We are presently working on plans for a large concrete swimming pool and a sauna to make your visits even more pleasurable and fun packed.

Our second miniten court is getting a lot of use, and the new roof in the main recreation area is also proving itself quite popular.

The first hangi held on our grounds on June 24 went off real well with a good attendance, and a lot of fun was had by all that turned up. Fortunately we had a genuine Kiwi couple, Peter and Shirley, to do the food preparations for us, and the food turned out beautifully, and we have had numerous requests for another hangi soon.

We are presently receiving a number of site bookings from our southern and northern friends for the coming Christmas period, so it looks like we will be in for a busy Christmas this year, which is a good sign that our hospitality and friendliness towards visitors is paying off.

The interclub days are once again proving very popular this year with good attendances from all participating clubs in Q.L.D., they provide not only competition in sport, but opportunities to meet new friends and see the never ending progress in amenities and facilities that goes on in other clubs as well as our own, In this way one forms ideas to make ones own club more pleasurable for your members and visitors alike.

From where the sun is naturally best

Sunshine Families.

THE THREE BEAR'S SUN & HEALTH CLUB

We would like to assure all the people heading our way for the 10th Australian Nudist Federation Convention and Rally, to be held at The Three Bear's from Wednesday 27 December 1978 to January 5, 1979. Progress at the beginning of July is well in hand as well. A large marquee is ordered 74' x 50' as well as extra toilets. A number of people have started booking in and we hear of lots more who are coming.

NUDISTS AND PHYSICAL BEAUTY AN ALTERNATE VIEW

Nudist literature quite consistently points with pride to the fact that all are welcome to our movement, whether rich or poor, old or young, light or dark, fat or thin, beautiful or not so beautiful. All that's necessary is a desire to enjoy the freedom of nudity with others and a respect for our fellow man. I can surely agree to that, but I believe we often go wrong in this concept by implying that it doesn't matter how we take care of ourselves. Of course it matters, and to me it matters very much.

Physical beauty - or handsomeness, if you like - is hard to define, but almost all of us like to see it, in spite of occasional complaints that this magazine prints too few pictures of "ordinary" people. Admittedly, most of us are not born with extraordinarily beautiful features, but what few seem to grasp is that, in time, the rather plain folks who try to keep themselves fit become better looking than the beautiful people who let their bodies go to ruin. Certainly, some types of disease and surgery leave marks that cannot be helped and must be simply accepted, but no one can accuse God of giving him a fat or flabby body. As nudists we especially enjoy the natural settings of the clubs and beaches where we take our recreation, free of those artificial things called clothes. How much more, then, should we be aware of keeping ourselves as beautiful as nature intended us to be. Surely, that takes effort, and Sue, my wife, and I must now work rather vigorously to stay in shape. But the results are worth it, not only for our self respect but also for each other's enjoyment and for those who must see us totally nude.

I would like to close with a little anecdote from personal experience. As I was lazing around in a hotel swimming pool one day, I am rather embarrassed to admit that I took little notice of a grey-haired lady, probably in her mid-fifties, who walked by me in a long robe. A few minutes later, though, my attention was indeed caught as I noticed out of the corner of my eye a lithe, tanned, beautifully shaped woman approaching in a bikini. As I turned slightly for a better look, it was that same grey-haired woman, and her face was as delightful as her figure. Yes, it is a rare person who looks better nude than all dressed up in fancy clothes, but as people who are proud of our nakedness, we should encourage each other to look and feel our best. Beauty, as the saying goes, is only skin deep, but in striving to do the best with what we have, we can reveal an inner beauty that shows we care about those around us as well as ourselves.

WALKABOUT

EXTRACTS FROM NEWSLETTERS OF AUSTRALIAN CLUBS AND NEWSCLIPPINGS

Advice was received in early June that "Brindabella Sun Club" has ceased to function. Evidently membership had dropped below an acceptable level for A.N.F. affiliation.

*   *   *   *

Corio Valley Country Club, Victoria.

We were quite taken with this article in the club's April/May newsletter, so have reproduced it verbatim.

If you were asked, "What is your most valuable possession" what would you say? My house, my car, etc. How many I wonder would say - my health. It is surely an indictment that despite the abundance of space, fresh air, sunshine and food that we have in this wonderful country there should be need to be such a massive expenditure on medical care. Probably the most disturbing feature is that most of the suffering, pain and tragedy is, in the main, self inflicted. Self abuse by the over indulgence in alcohol, smoking and food appears to be the main culprit with in some cases addiction to the so-called "hard drugs".

Over the years there have been many reasons put forward as to why people practice Nudism including the one of improvement in health. As nudists know the joy that comes with the feeling of sun, sea and air on bodies not restricted by clothing, also the enjoyment of seeing healthy, fit, sun-tanned bodies as designed by nature. Consequently we have a strong inducement to maintain them that way.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of our way of life is the recognition of "what is our most valued possession".

*   *   *   *

Good Companions, Queensland.

Some good advice for the new and over enthusiastic.

"Avoid sun burn. With the skin cells being continually baked, and the elastic fibres progressively being destroyed, a loose, baggy, wrinkly appearance is inevitable if you continue to burn your skin. Take sunbathing slowly to avoid sunburn. Over exposure will inevitably destroy the vital elements of the skin and will produce wrinkles and creases. Avoid anxiety and tension as much as possible. A happy heart will make you look and feel better in general."

The fold at Black's Beach, San Diego, are having their share of trials and tribulations. The following extract from the Nude Beach committees newsletter is relevant to nude beaches everywhere we think.

"Some people ask us about cameras. Black's is a public beach, and cameras are not illegal. However, the beach is also a community. If you, as a beach-goer, do not like cameras, then by all means protest - to the photographer. Tell the photographers to get lost, go to hell, or go to the desert. Don't tell the lifeguards since there is nothing they can do since cameras are not illegal. Beach people should protest more the activity they don't like or find offensive. Let's develop some self-policing and a community spirit! Out of here, voyeuristic photographers!"
