EDITORIAL

One of the remits which will be submitted for consideration at the forthcoming N.Z.N.F. Annual General Meeting is the matter of voting rights for the Free Beach Group Inc. The Free Beach Group are associate members of the N.Z.N.F. when they last applied for voting rights which the previous executive had promised them, the remit was rejected mainly due to two reasons.

Firstly just because Societies run on similar lines to the N.Z.N.F. do not permit Associate Members to vote, it could not be seen by some people why the N.Z.N.F. should be any different. Secondly some Clubs were unsure of the Free Beach Group's relation with the N.Z.N.F. and were concerned on the point of F.B.G. members visiting their grounds. These Clubs also voted against the remit mainly due to confusion.

However, in the meantime the F.B.G. produced a bylaw covering the matter of visiting rights to the general satisfaction of Sun Clubs and the other objection is merely one of formality, surely we can be different?

It is important that we are seen to be one force in New Zealand.

LANDSLIP: Eddie Robertshaw

"Landslip" - A word not even in the regular vocabulary of most of us, but after the events of August 8th, 1979, a word which became common household usage. Perhaps the article on the Orchard Sun Club printed in the last issue of this magazine offended higher sensibilities by being too optimistic, and the appropriate punishment has been handed down; whatever the reason, the aftermath of the night of 8th August could be compared to "Doomsday" being visited upon The Orchard property.

The movement, in one huge piece, of millions of tons of earth about 50-60 acres in area and 100 feet deep, almost defies the imagination. The pressures involved in this block of land moving on its slip plane a distance of 50 yards must have been immense, and were certainly the cause of an experience unique in New Zealand.

Abbotsford is a suburb on the Borough of Green Island and the cracking and slumping of ground in the hill housing area was well known and documented in the months preceding the landslip. Signs of ground cracks and pressure bulges eventually made themselves evident on The Orchard property, and finally our internal entrance roadway started to disintegrate. Two large trees fell over and the remaining caravans were hastily removed from the site. Still, with assurances from the experts who swarmed across the property day and night, we expected no more than the inconvenience of losing our roading over the bank, along with a number of large macrocarpa trees.

Thursday, 9th August, found two of us from The Orchard committee at the Green Island Civil Defence headquarters at 9 a.m. keen to find out how the club had fared. The headquarters were of course, controlled chaos, with homeless or evacuated people, civil defense, police and army personnel, some of whom had been working all night. The whole hill area was designated strictly "no go".

Rob and I quickly realised we were very low on the list of priorities, so we decided to use our local knowledge and see for ourselves, as the centre of all activity was of course the housing area. On approaching our grounds from the back door' the large cliff where the block had broken away became apparent, but we were unprepared for the appalling scene of total chaos which was to greet us.

To give a better picture of the type of damage sustained, let me explain briefly the mechanics of the slip movement. The huge block of land had moved in a south easterly direction, and the cracks showing in the club property had joined up with the major trench running through the housing area half a mile away. This had formed a horseshoe shaped split, the eastern leg of which ran completely through the club property. The east side of The Orchard grounds are on the base of another hill and this formed the buffer to stop further movement of the slip block in this direction. The result of this restraint was disastrous.

The tremendous pressures created by millions of tons of earth and rock moving as one piece and then being restrained by an even larger hillside can only be compared to an underground bomb explosion. The main sports and recreational area of the club also comprised the lowest point of the slip, and the resultant compression pressures generated below ground caused an upward bursting effect which literally burst the ground wide open from below. I trust the accompanying photographs give some idea of the results. Because of this underground pressure the main sports and picnic area was thrust 50-60 feet vertically into the air, destroying our large concrete pool, miniten courts and all grass courts. The main portion of the clubhouse was pushed 30 feet straight upwards, causing it to split into three portions, and the large rear lean-to area, being left on its original level, fell off and collapsed.

Huge 80 year old pine and macrocarpa, along with 80 foot high poplar trees, lay fallen in all directions, and many more were partially uprooted and lying at dangerous angles.

The creek bed had risen considerably, creating a large pond at the back boundary, and all access roading was completely destroyed. At the front (south) end of the property clay and sand had squeezed out from under the mass, raising the front paddock well above its former level and spilling out onto the football grounds which front the club property. As you can imagine, we were appalled, and not a few tears were spilled when people saw the results of what had been, in some cases, up to seven years work in getting The Orchard into the delightful area it had been.

However, shocks wore off, and subsequent extensive earthwork carried out by the Ministry of Works and local contractors have transformed the area into a site which it is possible to re-develop again. We have had up to six D6 - D8 class bulldozers, two Hy-Mac diggers and a motor scraper working on the property at one time, and they have shifted colossal amounts of earth and transformed an impossible task for the club into one which makes it possible to plan for a new future with confidence. At the time of writing this (October) we still do not know what compensation we may get for damage, if any, but we have had offers of help from a major earth working company and on this basis have started clearing trees and laid out marker pegs to show new levels for future development. No disaster is completely without a bright side, and one benefit we can see arising from the upheaval is a considerable increase in flat areas available for future use. These still require extensive bulldozing and landscaping, but the potential is there to lay out and replan our grounds to greater advantage than before. The creek has been largely piped underground now to help clear the ponding problem, and this creates more useable area also.

The club A.G.M. was held at the end of September and we were delighted with the large turnout of members who expressed their solid support and backing to keep The Orchard in business. The main objective at the moment is to create a new access road leading into the area of sheltered, fruit tree lined back gullies, which has remained largely untouched, and so open up the grounds for use this summer. Next priority is a grass volleyball court, a Para pool, and a barbecue area to help keep members interest alive while we redevelop the devastated area. As soon as the Green Island Borough Council have re-established roading and services nearby we want to reconnect water, power, telephone and hopefully drainage, and have a new entrance road formed and metalled. Long term, with our accumulated experience, increased membership in the last couple of years, enthusiasm and planning, we expect The Orchard to bounce back better than before.

While writing this the weather is bright and sunny, the blossom is putting on a lovely showing on our remaining fruit trees, and the outlook is brightening all the time. Of one thing I am sure - The Orchard will blossom again!

N.Z.N.F. OFFICER'S REPORTS

Secretary Les Wellington.

A recent article in this magazine has suggested the formation of an organisation of Nudist Federations in the South Pacific, and at the same time withdrawal of the ANF, from the International Naturist Federation. The tenor of the article also suggests that the NZNF should likewise withdraw from the INF.

The article in question has been circulated by the A.C.T. to all clubs in the South Pacific and the ANF and NZNF.

This subject is bound to receive considerable attention at our Annual General meeting, and this is a good thing.

The NZNF view at this stage is that continued membership of the INF is not only desirable, but necessary. The NZNF executive has the mandate from Clubs to seek the best deal possible from the INF on the new membership card system, and has approached this particular problem in company with the ANF. A report on this will be presented at the AGM.

I would hope that if a satisfactory response is received then no further thought will be given to withdrawal. We need the INF just as much as the INF needs us, even if it is just for the 100 or so who obtain an INF passport from me each year.

However, although this has yet to be considered by the NZNF Council, the idea of SPAN has considerable merit, and is a subject of discussion between the NZNF and the ANF.

No doubt we all look forward to the discussion on this issue at our AGM.

For those who may be interested, there is considerable dialogue between the NZNF and the ANF, brought about initially by the visit of Ted and Mary Weston to NZ last summer, and now by the interest in nudism in New Zealand and Australia by the present ANF Secretary and myself. I am sure that this close co-operation will grow from strength to strength, and be of benefit to both our Federations.

Last year we had our 'Access' promotion programme. This year our National Open Weekend and associated promotion. Next year? By the continued support of member clubs the Federation will continue to work for the improvement of the nudist movement, and promote its ideals to the community at large.

As we end another year, and enter another summer season, we say thank you to all officers and members of clubs, for supporting and encouraging the movement in New Zealand, and hope that there will be many other people who will next year be able to 'BARE WITH US'.

BEREAVEMENT

I would like to thank all those for their kind letters written on the death of Emiel.

Yes, it is sad that he did not live to see his great dream of legal Free Beaches for New Zealand become reality.

But I am sure that his efforts over the years will not be wasted and that many will benefit in the not so far distant future.

Sincerely,
Edna Roland.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE...?

John H. Gilmour

The problems of the International Nudist Federation in running a worldwide nudist organisation are very similar, albeit on a grander scale, to those of the New Zealand Nudist Federation.

The article in the last issue, No. 92, of this magazine entitled "Spanning the South Pacific" highlighted these problems.

Australia and New Zealand leaving the l.N.F. and creating their own Australasian organisation and dragging in all the other South Pacific countries has definite advantages. But there are also some serious disadvantages.

The similarity between this idea and that of the South Island opting out of the N.Z.N.F. to start their own Federation is so apposite that the article cannot be allowed to pass without further discussion.

In the September1974 edition of the 'Naturist' No.72, the editorial summed it all up.

The I.N.F. World Congress spends most of its meeting time on domestic matters and very little time to planning promotion of nudism.

One thing that did come out of all the discussion at the 1978 Congress was that the I.N.F. Executive stated it was very desirable that a l.N.F. official should visit Australia and New Zealand. It was pointed out, however, that subscriptions from this part of the world, combined with the income from the sale of I.N.F. stamps for international nudist passports falls considerably short of the cost of sending someone over here.

Here is the crux of the matter. If one I.N.F. director visited us once it could only be seen as a token gesture and there is no way we could, under the present system, receive fair representation for the amount of money subscribed. Mere distance and travel costs ensure that we cannot be represented at every executive meeting and any suggestion of regular visits by I.N.F. executive members is unreasonable.

So what alternatives do we have?

In his article Mike Severs puts forward one very good alternative - start our own federation. But this has its disadvantages too.

The I.N.F. is well recognised throughout Europe and North America and many Australasian nudists travel those countries. When battling with authorities, especially on such issues as free beaches, it is so much more persuasive to be able to quote the many other countries which support our argument and the I.N.F. can back us.

This brings us to a second, and in my opinion much more practical alternative. Regional I.N.F. planning and representation.

Instead of all business being conducted through one country and all finance going through one bank, appoint regional committees, each with a measure of autonomy but all responsible to head office. This could be done easily by continents, each handling their own finances and paying some fees to the main organisation but each mainly concerned with promoting nudism in its own continental region.

In this way, when it comes to a World Congress each zone has already taken care of its domestic affairs and can send a delegate to thrash out matters of Worldwide promotional import.

This is, in essence, exactly the same system as suggested in the No. 72 editorial for our own Federation.

We do not opt out of the I.N.F., instead we become the Australasian branch of it. In this way we can still support the rest of the world in its struggles and when needed we can call on the rest of the world to back us up in our own battles.

Obviously there will be problems to sort out and a lot of planning and reconstruction, but I think it is the only way to go.

U.S.A. CONVENTION REPORT 1979

Mike Severs A.C.T.

I'd like to say that it was brilliant planning that enabled my wife and I to attend the American Sunbathing Association (ASA) Convention at Glen Eden during our U.S.A. holiday, but actually it was just lucky that both things happened at the same time. But it was too good a chance to miss.

It was a 14 hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, so we had booked ourselves into a Los Angeles hotel for the first night. The hotel turned out to be an uninspiring concrete block of a building, and its staff in total confusion. I'd booked a big American camper van for the trip, so we decided to scrap our hotel booking, pick up the van, and head straight off to Glen Eden. Which we did.

Glen Eden is about 100km east of LA. It had a huge sign on the side of the road, and we found it easily. We checked in at the office, and found they knew all about us. We had to buy green Glen Eden 1979 Convention tags, then a man in an electric buggy showed us to our site - they'd reserved for us one of the best sites in the place - right next to the pool / clubhouse complex. How's that for hospitality!

Glen Eden was started in 1963, and now has 1450 members. It also has superb facilities - a large clubhouse with a restaurant, dance hall, sauna, indoor pool, showers, etc. Outside they have a large heated indoor pool, jacuzzi (spa pool), sports fields etc. Our son David wanted to go for a swim straight away, but before he was allowed to he had to pass a swimming test which earned him a "red dolphin" badge. That applies to all kids.

That night there was a singer and a band at the clubhouse, then a show put on by Glen Eden and Olive Dell clubs - a brilliant show with lots of enthusiasm and talent.

We met several nice people. Everyone was very friendly and interested in us, and in the Australian nudist scene. We danced till gone midnight, then finished off with a friendly chat sitting in the jacuzzi - very relaxing - before heading off to bed. We'd been up for 32 hours at this stage. We slept well!

When we woke up the next morning the tennis courts were full of energetic people, and the sporting side of the Convention seemed to be ticking over nicely. The "Shutterbugs", Glen Eden's own camera club, were running a model shoot in the morning and I had to register my camera so I could take pictures.

Photographers and models straggled over the hills until it was decided we were far enough away from the camp to take pictures. We all took lots of pictures, and my wife Rosemary was pressed into being a model too.

After lunch a "Royal Family" contest was in progress - a beauty contest for kids to oldies. We went to a wine and cheese tasting, energetically watched some volleyball, and got to know lots of people.

That night was another dance - we had to be dressed for that one. I won a door prize, and together we won a prize for coming the furthest to attend the Convention - after a small discussion over whether Ireland was further away than Canberra! We won a bottle of California wine, a record album of a nudist musical written and produced by one of the Florida clubs and an address book to write down the names of our new friends. Nice thoughts, all.

Again the evening finished in the jacuzzi, relaxing and socialising. Nice.

The next morning, Sunday, was the parade of flags. All the clubs who attended the Convention and had brought their flags along joined the parade, and the A.C.T. Nudist Club flag was flying right in there, hoisted on a broken billiard cue used as a flag pole.

They have a chapel at Glen Eden. There had been a service there that morning, and a wedding a week or so earlier. Rosemary and I wandered down there because from the chapel you are allowed to photograph the club site. It's very pretty.

There was a body painting contest later, and a raffle. A pleasant day, only saddened later by having to say goodbye to our new friends, as the Convention was over and people were heading off home. And we had a holiday to get on with.

A week later we were at Treehouse Fun Ranch, where the annual Miss Nude U.S.A. Pageant is held. The friendly owners, Bill and Fran Flesher, showed us around the site and made us feel at home. They have a nice jacuzzi, where we spent most of Friday evening.

The van broke down at Treehouse, and we were forced to spend an extra couple of days there - what a shame! Again superb facilities and we spent most of the time around the pool acquiring magnificent tans and getting to know some of Treehouse's 1200 members. By Monday the van was fixed, and it was time to move on to other places. A tremendous trip, and unimaginable friendliness and hospitality.

Farewell America - we'll be back!

THE PROPHET / KAHLIL GIBRAN

On Clothes

Your clothes conceal much of your beauty,

Yet they hide not the unbeautiful,

And although you seek in garments the freedom of privacy,

You may find in them,

A harness and a chain.

Would that you could meet the sun and the wind,

With more of your skin, and less of your raiments,

For the breath of life, is in the sunlight,

And the hand of life, is in the wind.

Some of you say,

It was the northwind that has woven the clothes we wear,

And I say, Aye, it was the northwind,

But shame was his loom, and the softening of the sinews his trade.

And when his work was done,

He laughed in the forest.

Forget not that modesty is for a shield,

Against the eye of the unclean,

And when the unclean shall be no more,

What were modesty,

but a fetter and a fouling of the mind?

And forget not,

That the earth delights to feel your bare feet,

And the winds long to play with your hair.

FREE BEACHES FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM:

Charlotte C. Peters. P.R.O. C.C.B.N.

The hard work by many people, both inside and outside the Naturist movement, over the past few years is beginning to pay off.

Hastings Council, boldly going where no Council in Britain has gone before, allowed the first official beach in the country for Naturism, at Ecclesbourne Glen, last year. This proved both popular and peaceful, so taking courage from this success, a National Beach Campaign was launched in January.

The first Council to show interest was Cunninghame. On ScotIand's west coast, washed by the Gulf Stream and noted for its extensive sandy beaches, is Cunninghame the ideal holiday centre. It's council pursues a vigorous policy of development which served to enhance the inherent beauty of the area.

Even in late February, after a winter not noted for its kindness to nature, the town of Irvine was neat, well trimmed and welcoming.

Councillors and Officers, recognising the great potential which Naturist Tourism offers their area and conversely what their area can offer to Naturists, were keen to allow us to use a beach.

In fact they have approved the use of two beaches, with the distinct possibility of a third on the Isle of Arran.

The first beach, at Irvine, is called Gailes Beach. This is situated at the southern end of a vast, new outdoor and indoor Leisure Park. It is readily accessible by public and private transport and is only 20 minutes walk from town.

The northern limit of Gailes Beach is a zig-zag of fence against the dunes. The southern limit is about a mile from this point and each limit will be marked with signs before we are allowed to use it.

The second beach, at Stevenston, is called Ardeer Beach and is situated at the back of a large l.C.I. works, which cannot be seen from the beach. This is close to a major redevelopment project, which is taking place at the moment and will make another pleasant leisure park, which is to include camping facilities. The Leisure Park will separate the Naturist Beach from the main public beach which is further north in the next bay.

The concreted boundary wall, which sets the outer limits of the lCI works, can also be taken as the northern limit of Ardeer Beach. The southern limit will be the River Garnock. Again signs will be posted at each end, before we are allowed to use it.

We hope that both beaches will be in use by summer.

The Irvine - Stevenston area is blessed with excellent road, rail, air and ferry services and is only 30 miles from Glasgow. Both Prestwick and Glasgow airports are within easy reach; and there is a fast efficient train service from Glasgow. Ferries travel locally and to the Isle of Man.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Sir,

As regards the Women's Representative Report in Issue 91 and the letter replying to it in Issue 92, we feel very strongly that the women's meeting referred to should have been just that: - a meeting for women. Privacy of the individual refers to both male and female which means that both are entitled to privacy. In our opinion a women's meeting is organised to get women together to discuss problems which are peculiar to women. Emancipation and equality of the sexes can never alter the reality that only a woman can even begin to understand another women's intimate problems.

If Ross thinks he can understand these problems then he is very arrogant indeed.

When Ross and Raewyn decided to do "everything" together at the Rally, that was their decision. By attending the meeting they imposed that decision on others and placed the Women's Representative in a very awkward position, augmented by the fact that all three persons came from the same club.

Obviously, a women's meeting, by its title, banned Ross from being present, because of gender. Therefore to save embarrassment, and to continue to do "everything" together, neither should have gone.

Perhaps, in a future report, the Women's Representative could define for us exactly what her role is in the N.Z.N.F. and submit a condensed report on the various subjects discussed or suppressed at this particular meeting, within the bounds of common interests.

Noreen and Tom Allison.

Dear Mike,

So Ross Pennell thought he might miss something if he didn't attend the women's gathering at the Christchurch Rally. He insists that he should have the right to attend any women's gathering.

On the other hand women have the right to gather together without men if they so desire.

I have noticed that people who insist on their rights in relation to the Bill of Human Rights, often overlook that the other person also has their rights. Being able to understand this, and appreciate the other persons point of view, and to act accordingly is known as maturity.

Anybody at the Christchurch Rally who gave the Impression that they were hard done by, usually received a chorus of "aaaaw". This usually had the result of defusing the situation or bringing the person down off their high horse. Maybe I should say it in this situation.

It should be noted though, that although Ross says he did everything with his wife, the Bill of Human Rights excludes men from entering women's toilets and visa versa.

Doreen James,
New Plymouth.

Dear Sir,

There has been a lot of mention in your magazine, and many other naturist magazines about depilation.

I would like to say that if you so-called "Naturists" think that everything about the body is so natural and normal, why do men have their hair cut and why do they shave off their beards.

I would have thought that the "natural" look would have been more in keeping with the naturist point of view. This is the very opposite to the depilation argument but let's be logical in our thinking.

A. Jewell, Timaru

Dear Sir,

I am a married man whose wife is not interested in nudism. As a result of this I am not able to become a member of a club.

I read with interest the article on Bangalee Nudist Holiday Resort, but when I went there I was not allowed to stop. However when I went to the River Valley Holiday Resort I had a lovely week.

I love being naked and find so few opportunities, so it was marvellous just to be able to get undressed, put my tent up, walk around, talk to young and old nude people.

I am looking forward to going again and hope one day I will be able to join a club.

Thank you for your wonderful magazine.

John Kotre
Victoria.

Dear Mike,

In reference to the letter by Angela Fawson, Secretary of A.O.H.C. in Issue 92.

She seems desperately trying to explain the meaning of the two words, "unmanageable and unfriendly".

As far as A.O.H.C. goes I like to use the proverb 'Whom the cap fits, let him wear it'

Leo and Sonja van Ophoven

Dear Mike,

The Need for a Women's Representative

Despite the modern assumption, there are a large number of people who have been raised with the outlook of a generation ago.

The availability of a Women's Representative, for any woman, especially newcomers to the idea of nudism seeking information re "things which are naturally peculiar to women", is essential to dispel any doubts they may have.

As these communications are confidential, they cannot be used to justify a position which some people see as redundant.

The National Naturist Review, Issue No.17, featured the first article under the heading "Talking to Women". With the appointment of a Women's Representative, the responsibility for that feature became hers. N.Z. Naturist, No. 62, carried the last of these and I feel an excellent channel of communication closed.

Tom Leaf

Dear Editor,

First, a comment on The Naturist. I cannot understand how you can afford to publish such a high quality magazine as The Naturist.

Now I promise not to continue the discussion of Issue 89 nor will I comment on Mr Montague's view of American nudism. I would be remiss however, if I failed to respond to Mike Severs article on I.N.F. affiliation.

Being a North American, I can sympathize with Mike's feeling that non-Europeans do not benefit in direct proportion to the European countries from I.N.F. affiliation. In fact, certain American Sunbathing Association member clubs have, in the past, questioned the need for I.N.F. affiliation on the same grounds as Mike has.

In each case, the majority of A.S.A. members have realized that an International organisation of National Federations is a necessity as is a National Federation of individual clubs and members.

The structure that Mike suggests as a replacement, SPAN, would appear to be a duplication of the I.N.F. on a smaller scale. Would that duplication serve the members better? How much could be done with a working budget of only $2000?

America could withdraw from the I.N.F. and promote its version of SPAN which would encompass America, Canada, South America and Hawaii (which, by the way is part of America). Then there would be three International Organisations none of which would be truly international.

May I suggest that instead of withdrawing, you might consider running one of your "own" for l.N.F. Vice President at the next Congress? Alan Neichro who represented the Australian Nudist Federation at the last Congress or Maurie McGrath who was the New Zealand Nudist Federation representative would make excellent candidates. Then you could work for more representation from within rather than disperse the troops by splitting off.

Nudism needs unity of a strong International Organisation to which each of us contributes to ensure that it becomes and remains strong enough to, in turn, help each of us when necessary. To form competing organisations would not help the A.S.A. - N.Z.N.F. or the A. N. F.

Dear Sir,

I have been reading your magazine at a friend's house, I think it is reasonably well presented and can understand some of the things about naturism. I think it is OK for grown-ups.

I have been told there is a Rally for adults each year and that there is a separate rally for teenagers.

How can any parent allow their teenage children to go off on holiday together knowing they are to see one another nude all the time. This cannot be healthy surely?

I am not a prude and have an open mind on this subject but find this aspect of naturism a little bewildering, can you explain to an outsider like me what it is all about.

P. Uphill (Mrs)

Dear Sir,

We are a group of country members from the A.C.T. Nudist Club living in the central West of N.S.W. We would like to hear from other couples and families in the area interested in nudism, whether members of other clubs or not. We would appreciate it if all replies could be sent C/- the A.C.T. I THINK I'VE GOT IT WRONG AGAIN DAD

extracted from: N.Z. Road Safety

It's been the story of my life. From the very first day the doctor spanked my gluteus maximus and I screamed for hours, I knew my life was going to be full of fun and games.

Well, now I'm too big to go across my father's knees and be spanked; that is if he wants to walk again. The screaming went on for about 15 years. It had its highs and lows but the day I began to learn to drive marked a whole new era in parent-child relationships.

I decided that if I was going to get my licence it was high-time I learnt the road code from cover to cover. I took it everywhere ... I read it on the train, between my fat maths book at school, in the bath and even when I was watching "CHIPS". Finally when I was convinced I knew it all, I made an appointment for the written and oral test.

The traffic officer had nothing on John Travolta. In fact I felt a little weak at the knees. The written part was easy ... I took my time and came through with flying colours. The oral however, was a different matter altogether. The first two questions were okay. But then it happened ... my mind went blank. I couldn't think for the life of me what a limited speed zone was.

Two weeks of sleepless nights later, I tried again ... and passed. I was half-way towards a driver's licence.

I still remember the very first time I sat behind the wheel of the car. The car wasn't moving but that was irrelevant. I'd sit there with my foot on the clutch, one hand tight on the steering wheel and the other moving the gear lever through the gears. It took me nearly six months persistent nagging before Dad would go so far as to let me back out of the driveway. I imagined it was going to be peaches and cream.

The driveway was just wide enough. It had a letter box on one side. Well at least it used to. It's no longer standing. On the other side is a tree that doesn't budge.

The letter box business was only the beginning of a long chain of events that was going to land my mother, father and myself close to going our separate ways. Lessons came at regular intervals - six months apart. It took that long for the car to come right again. The second time my father took me for a lesson it was miles away from the city ... in fact it was miles away from anywhere. I remember the road clearly - as though it was only six months ago. It was about five metres wide with a gravel surface. On one side was a field of hay and on the other side cows grazing. For a few seconds I was distracted by a bull and a cow but I managed to keep the car on the right course. The car came to an abrupt halt however, and I found myself relegated to the passenger seat. Six months later my father was speaking to me again.

Driving with my mum was no better. Most of the time she was too nervous to give instructions and when she did, the trembling in her voice muffled them.

A family picnic in the Wairarapa seemed a good idea but it too turned into a nightmare. You see, I've acquired an unfortunate habit of incessant fiddling. Once I start I can't stop, and if and when I do decide to stop it's usually too late by then.

We set off early in the morning - Ma, Pa and the kids. We were out for the day with the boat and having a terrific time. The car was parked on a slope with the boat trailer attached. Dad had left the car in gear. I was sitting in the driver's seat with the radio playing, minding my own business when I decided I'd have a fiddle. I pushed my size eight foot on the clutch. The car started rolling backwards until the trailer jack-knifed into the rear of the car. You've never seen two hands wind up four windows and lock four doors in the time I managed - 10 seconds flat. That's how long it took me once I'd caught the expression on Dad's face. "That does it girl!" he said - from outside the car. My time was up, my days were surely numbered. It was time to seek someone else's car.

Driving lessons with my parents had proved a harrowing experience - my father-daughter and mother-daughter relationships had taken a real beating. To save my home life and my sanity I decided to approach a driving school. At first I thought it was just a matter of tossing a coin ... I changed my mind when a friend of mine told me that she had driven a driving school car into a fence and they hadn't kicked up too much fuss.

The so-called experts couldn't even tell the time. My appointment was set for the uncouth hour of 7.45 am, on a Sunday morning. I didn't mind the time too much as it was the only time my friends would be asleep. Maybe he'd heard of my exploits in the Wairarapa or elsewhere but the instructor didn't bother to turn up to his bleary-eyed client.

As you can see the whole experience was a disaster. That's why I've decided to invest in a 10-speed racing bike, You never know, maybe I'll win the Golden Kiwi and be chauffeur driven for the rest of my life.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC.

We now have a full sized archery target and one of our members is getting quite an expert. A grass miniten come Volleyball court has also been added, so with a swimming pool and a five bedroom house, fridges, cookers, deep freeze etc., we have a lot to offer.

Last season we had a lot of visitors from all over the country and overseas, mainly due to the Rally at Christchurch. By the way our members that did go to the Rally really enjoyed themselves. Thank you Pineglades.

One point worth mentioning is that we had a motor-mower catch fire and nothing to put it out with. It started as a small flame around the carburettor, a short burst from a fire extinguisher would have put it out with no trouble, but while one of our members was looking for something to smother it with, the small flame melted a hole in the plastic or fibreglass petrol tank.

We are now in the process of acquiring a fire extinguisher and we now have members who carry one in their cars.

This winter the Club supplemented its income by selling sacks of wood. One advertisement in a local paper sold 85 bags one weekend.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

Well we missed out on the last issue, but we'll catch up on what's been happening at the club this time. Our A.G.M. was held in August and the new committee got straight into action and by the time this is published, we will have a hard miniten court down.

Work has progressed on the extension to the clubhouse and the hot tub house, and numerous trees have been planted around the grounds to help with screening.

Our Annual Cabaret was held in Rotorua again and this was a great success with ten visiting clubs attending from Auckland through to Wellington, to prove that Rock 'n' Roll definitely hasn't died. This weekend has certainly proved to be a highlight on the Nudist Club Calendar and is a great way for everyone to get together after the winter.

A large contingent of members attended the North Shore Nudist Club's camp-in at Labour weekend. Rotorua visited us at Guy Fawkes weekend for a bonfire and barbeque.

With numerous interclub visits and social events planned during the summer, we will certainly be busy.

Our club grounds will be open during Christmas and New Year for visitors passing through on their way to and from the Rally, so anybody visiting our area, please do not hesitate to pop in and see us.

We'd certainly love to see you.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

The club grounds are beginning to take on a new look. A large amount of hedge has gone, and has been replaced by a fine looking fence. Ground has been cleared for the miniten court which hopefully will be ready by Christmas. We should have more parking and tent space available also. The swimming pool too is having a face lift.

The Gisborne A & P Show held on 12 and 13 October gave us a great opportunity to promote nudism and our club.

We obtained a stand which was great pre National Open Day publicity. Crossed fingers ensured that the weather was kind to us, it is not easy generating enthusiasm for nudity when one is wrapped up against the elements.

Another October event was our Halloween Social held on Saturday 27 October. The Hot-tub was fired up to boil the witches potions. This was very popular throughout the winter - the sight of the season was watching steaming bodies pushing a car out of a muddy patch (in the dark it was, and looked really ghostly.)

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

This past winter has been one of endless flooding across our property at Ranui. We have taken the opportunity during this dry spell to get our grounds in order for the approaching summer.

Stage three of our sewerage scheme is almost complete and this incorporates a foot bridge across the stream giving easy access to the upper camp sites.

It will be some months yet before the scheme is fully functional and connected to the city sewer.

Limited camping is again available for visitors and request may be made via your Secretary using the Interclub visiting forms available at your club.

We take this opportunity to extend Christmas greetings to all and to wish you well for the coming year.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB

At last people in our club are starting to put in a bit of time and interest in the clubhouse and grounds, and with the drive now metalled, and kitchen facilities almost ready, it means people can stay up at the grounds. We still have no electricity or water (except to swim in) but are using Rockgas, and hope to have a water tank and piping in before Christmas.

Over the last year we have gained several families in the club, and have all met regularly at saunas.

We look forward to seeing anyone passing through on the way to the Rally or home again, or wishing to join us any time now that summer is coming along.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

R.S.C. Members have been very busy, as we got off to a late start because our first working bee for the summer was washed out. This season our grounds will have two sports courts in use, so we should be able to get some miniten practice in before the National Rally.

For the 1980 ½ A.G.M. we have been busy setting up a joint R.S.C. - B.O.P. Committee, which is working steadily organising venues, sightseeing trips and social events for this weekend.

We are progressing slowly but steadily with "Geyserland Leisure Park". The fresh water and lake access problems have been overcome and our application for a specified departure is still with the Rotorua District Council at the time of writing. We are expecting the matter to be dealt with in the near future.

At our A.G.M. in September, club members voted to move to Geyserland Leisure Park at the end of this summer and we hope to hold several working bees on the property after Christmas.

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB INC.

Hi, from Taranaki. Our recent annual cabaret was a huge success with nearly three hundred people attending. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of our special guest artist, Chris Drummond who entertained the crowd with his impersonations of Dick Emery. Our thanks to those members from other Clubs (including Ron Rencher) who travelled long distances to support our cabaret. Already the social committee are working on new ideas for next year.

With summer on the way our Club has been a hive of activity recently with workdays every 2nd weekend.

Visitors to the grounds will be amazed at the progress that has been made. The latest improvement being twelve rae-rolle points installed in the main camping area, doing away with the maze of cables that ran across the grounds.

Next time you are down our way, make a point of calling in to see us.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS:-

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB INC.

Our Fourth A.G.M. was held in August and George stood down as President after his two year term of office. It was good to see that on our new Committee there are now six female and six male members. A nice balance of power!

Mike, our previous Secretary, is now President, and is confident that the new Committee will press forward energetically to develop our Club and the land when we get it.

We will of course keep on having lots of social functions, and we will definitely be promoting the nudist movement here in the A.C.T. Our next community activity will be selling "skinny dipper sortees" from a stall at the local Weston Creek Festival, It helps to raise money for the Club, and definitely keeps us in the public gaze.

The saga of our land continues. The Government Department concerned has allowed us to inspect a site about 25km from Canberra, and the Committee and club members have been to look at it. It isn't a perfect site, but it is attractive. It is well forested and very hilly. Some of the gum trees are really beautiful. They would be a joy to paint if one were artistically inclined. We hope the Department will now act quickly and come up with suitable leasing conditions, so we can move in and get things developed by Christmas.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST RANCH

Well its that time of the year again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

1979 has been a year of progress for Sunshine Families. In the past twelve months we have added another miniten court, concrete this time, a Sauna with seating for ten, and a 15 x 10 metre swimming pool.

1980 should also be a year of progress as we intend to start work on a 5 x 5 metre turbo tub and a big clubhouse, approximately 24 x 12m for indoor sports, meetings, dances, etc.

Our membership has been growing steadily for the first four years of our existence, but we expect it to grow in great leaps and bounds as our facilities improve in the future.

CORIO VALLEY, VICTORIA.

Corio looks set to begin the summer season with a new 40 by 20 swimming pool now that approval for a bank loan has been accepted. Public relations side of club has seen much activity since the ACM, with radio segment, address to a local Apex club meeting, and a request from Deakin University to come to the club for film - interview on alternative lifestyles.

Our club swim-sauna nights continue to be a social and financial success, in fact without them Corio would certainly not be embarking on the pool project.

The forthcoming 5th Annual Nudist Ball, like previous occasions will be another sell-out and one of the "events" of the year. This year we will be honoured to have the Editor of none other than the New Zealand Naturist attending, which will add extra interest. Corio Valley will be well represented with two tables booked.

Club days and working bees continue to be well attended, and the last effort saw the new outlet road well on the way to being ready for summer traffic. In fact the grounds are looking quite beautiful in their "spring dress" and with the warmer weather one would like more recreation time to spend at the grounds ... BUT! Well we do have to earn a living to have the money to buy our needs to enable us to get to the club ... Catch 22!

See you next edition, or at the ANF Convention at Bangalee.

NATURI SUN CLUB N.S.W.

The family club on 70 acres of beautiful bushland between Hornsby and Gosford. During the winter months a dedicated group of members have been busy repairing and getting ready all our amenities for the coming spring and summer season.

Much has been done to our three miniten courts, picnic tables and seats repainted, a crazy stone and tiled area has been laid in front of our two barbeques, a new filter and aluminium shed has been installed for our beautiful large tiled sunken pool. The children's swings and play area has been attended to.

We have a caravan and cabin for hire, weekend, weekly, monthly or yearly basis.

PACIFIC SUN CLUB: Nudist Farmland.

is a new club on the north side ¼ hour drive from Brisbane, not far from Caboolture, a large farming town, and even closer to the small fishing village of Donnybrook.

The club is nestled in the middle of 200 acres of beautiful bush consisting of gums and native trees with just enough cleared, grassed areas.

Winding through the property is a tidal creek. A sandy spit has been cleared and grassed and the swimming is fabulous for young and old. A rope off a low tree provides hours of fun for kids playing Tarzan. There is also fishing, canoeing and crabbing to while away the time, or perhaps exploring one of the three islands, or just meditating away from it all.

For the sports minded, there is a large flat grassed recreation area which includes areas for cricket, baseball, Volleyball, basketball, miniten, tennis, and children's play area with trampoline, swing and sandpit.

The Club hut is in the centre of the recreation area with tank water for drinking, also here are the barbeques, the Bora-ring for dancing around the fire or for just sitting and yarning.

A well is down, awaiting a windmill to supply water to our new brick toilet block. The campsites are in two sections, some close to the recreation area and others a short walk away amongst the trees. Most are along the bank of the creek, easy to throw a line or crab pot in for that fresh meal.

Bush walks wind through the trees with plenty to see for all, wildflowers, myriads of birds and down by the lagoon complete with water lilies you can often see wallabies early in the morning or late afternoon.

With the club ¾ of a mile off the road, you do not hear the traffic and with timber all around is perfectly screened. This is a nudist's haven for families on picnics, weekends and holidays. Our motto is

Be Happy,
Have Fun
Free in the Sun

STATESIDE NEWS

YUCCA NATURIST CLUB

Today is the big day in Albuquerque, over 450 balloons are ascending this morning. It's the largest one yet, with entries from all over the world. Here at Yucca the sunrise is beautiful washing the complete camp with it's golden light. The trees are beginning to turn with spats of bright yellow mixed in with green. The mornings are crisp and cool melting into 80 and 90 degrees during the day time. This week end it isn't dark at anytime. The moon is full and lights everything as though it's trying to compete with the sun. Being an Easterner by birth, the Western moon never fails to amaze me with it's beauty. There is activity around camp trying to get everything ship shape for winter. It won't be long until the ground will be white with frost, and the snow will come. For all you readers who aren't acquainted with New Mexico snow is a wonder. If you get a pretty heavy snow at night, it's gone the next day. We're also making plans for our big Halloween Costume party, we're really looking for a big turn out, of members and their guests. Wish you could join us. Enjoy your Indian summer as we will, and give your Club your support, we need our members. From Y N C to Y O U.
