The Beauty of an Innocent World

What a memorable summer we have had. For some months now, I have worn clothes only when away from home, and for many nights have slept in perfect comfort without so much as a sheet to cover me. Of course there is a down-side to this. I have to wear a uniform which includes a jacket and polished shoes when engaged in volunteer ushering at a cinema owned by the Theatre Pipe Organ Society of which I am a keen member. Oh the agony of those shoes! They fit, but they seem to weigh several tons each. I can't wait to get home to remove them and revert to the wonderful feeling of fresh air on my aging body.

There is a common misapprehension that nudism is mainly about sexual display and the consequent satisfaction in a restrained manner of our natural curiosity about other peoples' bodies. There is as much interest among naturists in all aspects of sexual relations as amongst the general population, with as many variations in the manifestations of that interest, but I submit that the real motivation for most of us is sensual rather than sexual.

I swim regularly at my local beach. My light racing Speedos are as light and comfortable as swim wear could be - but what a difference there is from the dolphin like joy of total nudity when swimming. In a like manner, there is the pleasure of feeling the warmth of the morning and afternoon sun as I go out into the garden, and the caress of gentle breezes on my skin, or the brush of leaves over my back as I bend under a bush to pull out a weed from the garden. Though our Adelaide summer has been hotter than usual, I have had to put on the air-conditioner only once, and then only for a few midday hours. I do feel sorry for the farmers who need rain so desperately, but I must say that, after a good wet winter, I will be glad if all the rest of the summers which I will be privileged to enjoy in my dotage are like this last one.

Right now the only artificial additions to my aging and definitely non-sexy corpus are my spectacles.

Last night I re-read a book about the conquest of Brazil by the Portuguese. Reports from the priests who worked so hard to convert the natives were unanimous in their despair about the difficulty of getting the Indians to wear clothing ... "it was never within our power to make them dress ... as an excuse for always remaining naked they cited their custom of ... splashing water on their heads ... of diving in with their whole bodies like ducks more than a dozen times a day ... we forced female prisoners of war - whom we purchased and kept as slaves for our fort - to cover themselves, but as soon as night fell they secretly removed the chemises and other rags we had given them. To be really happy they had to stroll about our island quite naked before going to bed ... had we not constrained them to dress by whipping, they would have preferred to endure the burning heat of the sun, to have their arms and shoulders scorched, to withstand earth and stones, than to endure anything on themselves."

The forcing of clothes on native populations the world over was one of the greatest crimes perpetrated on them in the name of that God who had created the bodies which those who profess to believe in Him seem to regard as obscenely unfit to be seen. How can anyone who has once seen the sheer heart-melting beauty of little children playing in the shallows, the proud magnificence of a handsome youth, the grace of a lovely maiden, the life-giving mystery of a pregnant or breast-feeding mother, and yes, the dignity of older men and women when they are as nature made them, find the human body obscene?

We rightly admire the naked bodies of other creatures of that same God.

A magnificent stallion galloping, its mane streaming in the wind is a sight never to be forgotten. How much more beautiful it would be if, gripping its bare back with his knees, the brown body of a lithe youth moved as one with the beast as it streaked across the hills and vales. How lovely it would be if racing towards him we were to see a fine mare bearing his love. An old man's fantasy perhaps, but if I am to be reincarnated after I have finished with this body, I would wish to live in such an innocent world. The God in whom I have an unshakeable belief is manifest in the glory which we can perceive only through our senses. Fine music lifts us into a state of ecstasy as we listen. We enjoy fine food, the scent of a humble violet, and the gentle touch of someone who loves us. Let us have an end to the humbug that to enjoy the sight of natural human beauty in all its forms is demeaning to us and offensive to him.

As naturists, let us be at one with nature. It is only when all of mankind learns this, and acts accordingly that this world will be saved from an otherwise inevitable doom. As nudists, we can demonstrate the truth that we and our bodies are part of that nature. Let us celebrate our humanity. It is not we who have to apologise for our way of life. It is for those who wish to restrict, to force their own narrow and bigoted views on others, to justify themselves. By being open with our friends about our nudism, we will help in that process. While we hide and dissemble, denying our chosen way of life, we aid the enemies of enlightenment. We have the choice. Let us - all of us - stand up proudly to be counted. When I can swim naked at Brighton and you can be seen as you really are in your front garden, we will have won.

KATIKATI NATURIST PARK

- New Zealand's newest Naturist venue -

KATIKATI

Joan and Kevin Sampson are happy to announce the forthcoming opening of New Zealand's newest Naturist centre. The Katikati Naturist Park will be the culmination of much thought, site seeking, and planning. While you are reading this we are flat out putting the facilities in place with the intention of being open for guests some time in early February.

For those who don't know us we have been part of the naturist scene in New Zealand for many years, including about sixteen years as members of the Wellington Sun Club. Kevin also has served on the executive of the NZNF as Treasurer and Public Relations Officer. From this experience and our study of what is provided at other naturist venues we feel we know what naturists expect.

Our intention is that the Katikati Naturist Park will be a 'Naturist' venue in the true sense of the NZNF and the International Naturist Federation. The policy on nudity will be the same as that for the clubs in New Zealand.

There will be an expectation that our guests will go nude when the weather and other circumstances are suitable. As practised in clubs, there will be some leeway for newcomers to the naturist scene. We will have very few rules. However, one of them will be that clothes (togs) cannot be worn in the swimming pool, spa pool, or sauna. As you can see we do not regard ourselves as a 'clothes optional' resort but place ourselves firmly in the mainstream of clothes free recreation.

The word 'naturist' is being used by us as a deliberate decision since it reflects the underlying approach we are taking. It is also used because it reflects the beautiful setting we have found in which to establish ourselves. The property is a long narrow one of 15 acres, of which about 10 will be used for the park. Along one boundary is the Uretara Stream, a rocky river about ten metres wide (see photo included). For about 150 metres part of the river flows right through our land. This part of the river including a swimming hole will be available for clothes free recreation. The margins of the river have regenerating native bush which we are supplementing by plantings.

The land is particularly suitable for a naturist park being almost all flat and with established plantings of horticultural shelter. The boundaries are all planted with a variety of native and exotic trees. On two of the boundaries we are reinforcing the planting to improve the screening from neighbours. We have already planted hundreds of native trees of many varieties. We have spent weeks removing the blackberries, gorse, and other rubbishy growth from around the place. Our intention is to create a park-like setting without people being crammed together.

For instance, along a shady bank Joan has planted 40 rhododendrons, some hebes, and some ferns. In choosing the species to plant we have also been mindful of the needs of native birds.

The Katikati Naturist Park will be easy for you to find since we are on Wharawhara Road only 1.5 kilometres from State Highway 2, and only 3 kilometres from the centre of Katikati. Wharawhara Road is a two-laned sealed road.

The Nudvan Club had two rallies at our place last summer and have booked another one for this year. With our ease of access, large camper-vans and buses have no difficulty coming onto the property.

With us not clearing the hurdle of obtaining a resource consent until August and with summer fast approaching we have been under pressure to get underway. The effort necessary to get the land use consent is a tale in itself.

The first stage of our development comprises an ablution block with facilities for 100 people; a recreation room in which there will be a table tennis table, a pool table, television, and a sauna. Currently being finished is a swimming pool with an accompanying spa. A communal barbecue will also be part of the initial setup. There will also be children's play equipment. We have installed 20 power points for caravans and there is plenty of room for unpowered sites especially alongside the river. We have future plans for other accommodation, e.g. chalets, cabins, on-site vans, etc. So you can see we are undertaking a comprehensive development to give our guests plenty to do, if they want to do more than just enjoy the warm Bay of Plenty weather.

As soon as we are able, we will be converting the concrete base of an old shed into a miniten court and creating a grass tennis court. Petanque sets will be available to guests from the outset. There is plenty of room also for a volleyball court.

With all that we are providing, you are probably wondering what our charges will be. While we have not at the time of writing set our charges down to the last cent they will be very similar to those for any other camping ground in New Zealand with equivalent facilities.

There will not be additional charges for the use of the spa, sauna, sports equipment, etc. Once you are on the premises you are free to use all that is there for your enjoyment. So on that basis we will be offering a better deal than elsewhere.

Our grounds are open not only to campers but also to day visitors. With our location on one of the main tourist routes we aim to attract overseas tourists especially naturists from Europe, Australia and the USA.

Katikati is of course the 'Mural Town' of New Zealand with 17 extremely high quality murals on walls in the town illustrating local history. There are other things to do locally like tramping in the Kaimai Ranges which are only 3 kilometres from our grounds.

Other options include sampling the grape at the Morton Estate vineyard, working your way through the many local craft shops and galleries, admiring the birds at the Katikati Bird Gardens, and so on. So if you want to leave the grounds, you will find plenty to do.

As our opening date is uncertain if you would like to pay us a visit for a day, a few days, whatever, please give us a ring on 07-549 2158 and we will give you the latest update on progress. We are doing our best to be open in early February. We are totally confident you will enjoy yourself and go home refreshed. Remember, 'Nude is Natural', and we offer a very natural setting.

Tips on photographing the Nude by Terry Barnett

Assuming you are doing more than taking photographs for a record of a point in time, or of a place, your choice of model is important for figure photography, not so much in the sense of how they look, but in the amount of enthusiasm and interest they have in helping to create the image you are looking for. The ability to show the range of facial expressions associated with fashion or glamour is not necessary in nude or figure photography.

The object in nude photography is usually to present the subject in a very natural manner. Often the subject's identity is of little importance if the image is objective and impersonal. It's important to identify the reasons for your photography before you start, if you are photographing your family or friends, then their identity is likely to be important in the final image. If the subject is working with you to create an image that is less personal, then identity is of far less importance.

Having the subject for your photographs in mind is only the beginning. The most important thing to be concerned with is "planning". It's essential. Your model needs to have a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve before your photography session begins. They will want to know how they should pose, what ideas or feelings you are trying to convey, should attention be directed at the camera/viewer or should the viewer be ignored. These and a host of other questions should all be anticipated in advance.

Use clippings from magazines, sketches or other work you have done to explain your ideas. Assuming you are working in an outside location, plan your shoot to coincide with the time of day when the light is at its best. Early morning or late afternoon is generally most favourable, when the sun is low in the sky, giving very warm directional lighting. As a general rule avoid the midday sun as light from directly above can cast some very awkward shadows (particularly from the nose, you will also find the eyes are also shadowed).

Plan your photography to have no unnecessary distractions. Concentration needs to be directed on your subject and keep your eye on the lookout for fine details that may need adjusting, like hair or some distracting branch that appears to be growing out of your subject's head or even rubbish that may have crept into view in the background of the image.

Don't be too rigid with your plans, be flexible. As the photo session progresses you will find that you modify and refine your original ideas. Sometimes you will end up with images quite different and better than you first planned.

The "Nude" has always been a timeless inspiration for photographers and artists alike. Coming in an endless variety of shapes and types, the nude is a challenging subject to photograph.

Nude photography is an exercise in lighting and the observation of highlights and shadows cast by it. Shadows can be used to hide imperfections or to create depth for the subject to project out from, allowing the light to highlight features. It is light that sculptures and moulds the collection of rounded shapes and contours that make up our body.

Daylight is the most suitable light for such a natural subject as the nude.

The soft light, cast through dense tree cover gives very even light, although it is strong directional lighting which makes for dramatic images that emphasis form and texture.

Look for shadows cast by other objects. They may work in with your image either by creating a hard contrast or by complementing the shapes and shadows your model creates.

I prefer to photograph the nude in black and white. I find black and white photography offers a wide range of options in contrast and texture and can greatly assist in the creation of mood and feeling in your images.

It is from experimentation like this, combined with careful observation of form that you will eventually develop your own style. You may start by copying an idea that you have seen but with experience you will find that the initial idea is just a starting point for the images you will ultimately create.

Keep your subject involved with the session as it progresses, even though the conversation may be a little one sided as you give directions. Your subject or model needs to know how important the part they play is in creating the final image. They will also feel far more at ease knowing that the image you have just taken looks good, so make sure you tell them.

So where do you find ideas for your images? The answer is "Everywhere". Everywhere you look you will find shapes or shadows formed. In books you will see other peoples' work, it is not wrong to let your ideas develop from these images. You may try to convey the flowing shapes of sand drifts with the human form. By placing your figure within a landscape you can show how it conforms and blends in, belonging there; or to the other extreme the nude can form a stark contrast to the surroundings it is placed within.

With soft light you can show a soft and quiet approach to your subject or with harsher more dramatic light you can chisel out every contour. A traditional style of work may influence you or you may be more adventurous and take a modern graphic or even abstract approach.

I believe that nude photography is a personal comment, so don't let your planning be swayed or too heavily influenced by how others think your images should look. Remember that your images should show your interpretation of the subject - nobody else's - after all this is your interest.

Being a difficult subject to photograph well, the nude demands your complete attention. Your mistakes will be obvious, encouraging you to become more observant when taking and planning your shots in the future. This can only improve your photography not only within this photographic category but in most other areas of photography as well.

In Memoriam

Ed Lange

In Greek mythology, the Elysian Fields, also known as Elysium or the Isles of the Blessed, were the dwelling place after death of virtuous mortals or those given immortality by divine favour. The poets Homer, Hesiod and Pindar variously describe this happy land as being on the banks of the river Oceanus at the edge of the Earth.

Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia 1995

Ed Lange, the internationally known nudist leader who created Elysium Institute in Los Angeles, died Sunday, May 7 of cancer. He was 75.

This year, Lange was named Citizen of the Year for 1995 by the Chamber of Commerce in Topanga, California, for his 25 years of public service and humanitarian efforts and commended by the Los Angeles County Supervisor for his human rights activism.

Lange began his career as fashion photographer for Vogue magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and Life magazine, and as studio photographer at Paramount and Condé Nast studios in Los Angeles where be captured such Hollywood greats as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Lange was also heralded as an architectural photographer, whose work is installed in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In the late 1950s he began to publish magazines for the American nudist movement and established Elysium Growth Press in 1961 as a producer of books on body acceptance, health, and self-esteem. His concern for freedom of expression led him to challenge and overturn in the courts the 1939 anti-nudity ordinance in Los Angeles.

In l967 he founded the Elysium Institute in Topanga, California as a clothing-optional recreational and educational facility. A 25-year zoning battle with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ensued, resulting in the longest and most expensive zoning case in Los Angeles history. Lange spent over a million dollars in legal fees to overturn local laws and prejudices against social nudity, prevailing with a Conditional Use Permit granted in 1992.

Lange was a vice president of the American Association for Nude Recreation, a member of the American Sunbathing Association Nudist Hall of Fame, and a vice president of the International Nudist Federation with a half-million members worldwide. His philanthropic contributions included the Topanga Women's Club, the Topanga Community Center, the Topanga Philharmonic, and the Will Geer Threatricum Botanicum.

He is survived by his daughters Lisa Leah Lang and Dana Mia Lang Newman, whom he appointed director of Elysium before he died; and three grandchildren. Donations in Ed Lange's name can be made to the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Cancer Society. A memorial ceremony, open to the public, was held on Sunday, May 21, at Elysium Fields in Topanga, California.

Goodbye good friend

The staff of NZ Naturist and members of New Zealand Nudist Federation express sincere condolences to Ed's family and friends. He has had a long association with nudism in New Zealand.

National Federation for Naturism

—  Russia  —

The 1st Congress of the National Federation for Naturism took place on the 22-23rd of July in St Petersburg. This body was created by the participants of the IVth Conference of the Naturist Accord of Russia and is based on the latter. Practically, the delegates decided to change the name of our all-Russia naturist organisation and made certain changes to its charter. These measures were invoked by the necessity to make some changes because of the new law 'On parties and public organisations' approved recently by the State Duma and signed by President Yeltsin. The law looks a bit more democratic than the previous one and lets any organisation not wait for official approval of its existence or charter (if their aims are not against the law).

So in our case the new Naturist Federation created on the basis of the former Naturist Accord of Russia unites the majority of naturist clubs and groups from many regions of Russia which once entered former NAR.

Representatives from clubs of St Petersburg, Murmansk, Vladivostok, Moscow, Astrakhan, Chehov, Sarapoul were present. Full support was expressed by clubs of Novosibirsk, Revda, Kostroma and others. NFN headquarters are situated in St Petersburg. Valery Karpov (AAN, Astrakhan) was re-elected as Chairman of the NFN ruling body. Serguey Mitiushin ('Telord', Moscow) - as Vice-chairman. Alexander Kotzov (OKST, St Petersburg) is a member of the Executive body and NFN Executive Director.

The next Congress is to be held in Moscow, July 20-21 1996. Congress decided to declare 1996 as the year of Naturism in Russia's Middle Belt (regions between Moscow and Astrakhan) with special emphasis on efforts to create organised local naturist movement in regions of the European part of Russian Federation. We expect that joint efforts of many already existing clubs will let us find new friends and create new clubs.

The year 1995, which was declared by the IIId NAR Conference (Stavropol, 1993) as the year of Siberian naturism, justified our hopes. We have now good progress for Vladivostok, Kemerovo, Cheliabinsk, Kurgan, Yekaterinburg. We always expected to meet some separate nudists there, now we can rely on organised naturist groups in these regions.

The Congress decided to create a naturist centre for informative and methodological works. We also issued recommendations to deal more actively with regional and local mass media and to put efforts for naturist tourist expansion.

Photo: Robert Broekstra

That also is expected to become a real money source for our movement. The Congress showed: we are still alive. We are going on. We all have grounds and hope for a better future. We go to new frontiers because - in naturism we trust.

NFN Chairman

Safe Sunning

Back to melanoma - the fact is you do not have to venture from these shores in order to burn and have a fatal melanoma and if you were to migrate to Australia your risk appears to be the same as if you had remained in the UK despite the fact that Australia has the highest incidence of malignant melanoma in the world.

It is obvious that we must protect our children, ensure they wear hats and loose t-shirts in the middle of the day. Perhaps children's play areas should be more shady and clubs should consider planting a couple of trees. Babies should always be kept out of the sun and remember that sunlight can be reflected and it can also radiate through some materials and burn. High protection factor sun creams are essential for children, but beware of skin sensitivities.

With adults, sun screens can help, but it is far better to minimise your time in the sun and build up that tan slowly. If laying out why not choose a spot where the sun will move round and you will be in shade for a while - how often have we heard someone say they fell asleep. Falling asleep in the sun is natural - you are warm, comfortable and relaxed - so minimise the risks.

Some people who are on medication may find that can cause photo-sensitivity so it is advisable to talk to your pharmacist if you are taking any medication. Some types of cosmetics can also cause problems as they may contain ingredients which sensitise the skin - in this case it is more difficult as labelling is not as comprehensive as it could be.

As with all cancers the earlier it is treated the better the prognosis and naturists are more able than most to be frank with their friends if they see a suspicious mole or growth. You may feel awkward, but you could save someone's life. Leaflets can be found at your doctor's surgery or from the Health Education Authority, your local Department of Health or the Cancer Society of NZ (Inc), PO Box 1724, Auckland.

Suzanne Piper (President - CCBN)

Our bodies are very efficient at manufacturing Vitamin D through the reaction of sunlight on skin. Children without enough vitamin D can develop a bone condition known as rickets and older people, especially women after menopause need Vitamin D to prevent bone deterioration leading to osteoporosis and fractures which can in some cases lead to fatalities through complications.

Psoriasis sufferers will invariably report improvements in those areas of skin that are exposed to sunlight during the summer months. Some types of eczema may also show some improvement and some researchers believe that exposure to sunlight may help the healing process of slow healing ulcers and wounds. This could be attributed to the warm improving blood supply, to the bacterioscidic qualities of sunlight or as recent research seems to be showing an improvement in the body's immune system.

Now to the minus side of sunbathing - well some people do develop melanomas, others do have skin that ages - but with sensible precautions the risks of the most serious type of skin cancer - melanoma - can be minimised. The evidence is that it is sunburn rather than a suntan which is the major causative factor, with the younger you are when you burn the higher your risk. Research also shows that the kind of tan acquired over a period of time, such as when you go throughout the year to the club can afford some protection against melanoma but may increase the risks of the treatable basal cell type carcinoma. One good reason to go to those working Sundays at the beginning of the season and start building up that protection. A sun-bed will not give you the same type of protection as the real thing - no more than a Sun Protection Factor 2 or 3 as the tan they produce lacks the thickening of the skin found in exposure to natural sunlight.

With the approach of the warmer sunny days of spring and summer fast approaching, it is inevitable that the media will again be filled with warnings from various experts as to the dangers of sunbathing. Is this scaremongering or are there ways of minimising risk? Most important, and forgotten by these so called experts are the benefits of sunbathing. After all naturism is based on the philosophy that it is beneficial to expose our bodies to light and air, a fact that is supported by history in that before the advent of modern antibiotics, sanatoria where patients were outdoors with a minimum of covering (and a good diet) did have some success in treating illness.

We all know how down we feel on a dull drizzly day and how much better we feel when the sun peeps out from behind the cloud bringing us light and warmth, for many people this feeling is so accentuated as to become an illness - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - and they have to make up for the lack of sunlight by sitting by special light-boxes during winter months. So great is the depression these people feel that it affects their whole life.

Deep in the French speaking province of Quebec is a thriving Nudist club called, "Club Naturiste Loisirs Air-Solei1". Undoubtedly you are already familiar with the club as it is one of the 11 clubs which was included in my book "Canada naturally ... the book".

Briefly, Air-Soleil is very much a family club with approximately 170 family memberships. And with an average of 3.6 people per family, it is not hard to see why one almost has to wade knee deep through the kids. The playground facilities as well as youth oriented entertainment, needless to say, are very well done. The club has a pool, volleyball of course (but then ... who doesn't), along with various other games, a small restaurant a clubhouse etc.

One of the key features is a full sized baseball diamond literally in the middle of a forest, ("build it and they will come"). The club is fairly large by most standards, 150 acres, but that is just about to change in a fairly big way.

This is all old news however, and as it always is with the Nudist movement in Canada, things just keep getting better and better. I would like to introduce Osmond Binette, co-owner and president of Air- Soleil. Outside of a humble looking trailer located on a central site in the camp, home to him, his wife and two teenage daughters for the season; Osmond and I have finally met during my recent visit last summer. It is early August, sunny and warm though not unpleasant.

He is a bit late and has arrived without his family due to a recent break-in at his home in Montreal. We soon get comfortable though and as we both relax Nude, soaking up the sun with a cool beer, Osmond begins to discuss strategies for the camp.

"There is a crew working next to the camp," he says, "taking sand out. Can you hear them?" "Yes." I answer, although at this point my mind could hardly have been further from anything so trivial as sand. This was the beginning of a four day return visit during which I had been invited to do some more photography, this time for the new Air-Soleil flyer. In fact this was the first of four scheduled photographic visits that I would make over the next two weeks.

And as my mind wandered, trying to image how I would get that perfect shot for the flyer, I occasionally came back to a nagging question that was only just on the threshold of my conscious thought, "What does sand have to do with photographs?"

Rather a lot as it turned out, but let me continue. "They have been removing sand for quite some time from this side," as he points to the noise. "And they have just about run out. They have already finished the other side, and we're right in the middle." I started to become a little bit more interested. Osmond continues to explain how there is a vein of sand running under the camp. This sand is of a particularly high quality, "the kind used to make bricks". It turns out that the camp is in the process of negotiating the sale of the sand to the company. The deal, which was a virtual done-deal at that time, will give the camp all of the land on the one side; which the company now owns but no longer wants. In addition the company will pay about a dollar per cubic metre of sand that it removes. It is difficult to know just how much sand is there, but Osmond estimates that it will take five years to remove. "We are going to add some apartments," he says, "along with improving the club house and other facilities. We could of course just pocket the money," he explains, "but we are not going to do that. All of the money will go back into the camp so that everyone will benefit. Maybe we will build a golf course. Anyway money won't be a problem for anything we want to do." With this, and the offer of another beer, Osmond asks if I would like to take a walk and see the pit.

The camp is totally surrounded by trees, but it is only about 50 feet through the forest to get to the biggest and most beautiful sand pit that I have ever seen. As I gaze out onto this vast expanse of sand, I cannot help but to think that it will make for one hell of a sand trap for the golf course. But it is not all good sand, most of that is gone and the one notable feature is that the land is some twenty feet lower than the camp.

As we start out on what ends up being a half-hour walk, Osmond points out the features of the future Air-Soleil property. The land we are on is quite high, and as we walk we find ourselves on a road leading down to the river. It was at about this point in time that I remembered that we were both still Nude, even though we left the camp a while back.

The property will give access to a river, and in fact there are a few small islands on the river, which will be included in the deal. We pass the current work area, and can see the construction equipment as we head down a long road leading to the river.

"Of course the river will give a whole new meaning to the camp," and as we spent the next ten minutes walking through a forested part of the property on the way back, I thought, "so will this."

The next day, we went again. This time we had a convoy of four golf carts, and an entourage of volunteers to take photographs of, as we boldly ventured out, for a first real Nude look-round of the future expansion at Air-Soleil. With the sort of thrill that pioneers must have had at leaving their boat, and stepping onto dry land for the first time, a dozen or so Nude people all spontaneously left their golf carts and run up one of the sand dunes. And I ran too, this time with my camera in hand, to photograph this monumental occasion. There was tremendous excitement as our small band of Nude explorers ran to the top full speed, then in turn, leapt head first over the top.

Then it was down to the beach, and again the pioneering spirit was alive as a dozen Nude people headed towards the river. The ladies picked flowers, the men talked, except one man who, not to be outdone began picking thistles. A few photographs, then up to see the construction equipment. A few more photographs, and then back to the camp.

Now this was not our last visit. The skies had been somewhat grey during this trip. Thinking that the sand dunes would make for some wonderful photographs, I suggested Osmond that we do another trip under sunnier skies, with some people this time, to run and jump off the dunes. I must have thoroughly offended one woman in her 50s who overhearing this, took it to mean that she would not be welcome to come back. Of course that was not the intention, and she did return. The following day, with the sun shining brightly, we walked and asked a handful, no more than seven or eight younger people, if they would be interested, and if so then they should listen for the announcement.

What happened next was incredible. Three minutes after making the announcement for the "Pit Gang" to meet at the office, we had three golf carts and about seventy five volunteers. And contrary to what you might find in many places, about one third each were: adults, teenagers, and children. No hang-ups here. The next hour or so on the sand dunes was just absolutely crazy fun for everyone. Seventy-five Nude people laughing and jumping, with not a single care in the world.

I found it necessary to break the crowd up into groups. Nobody was the least bit concerned though. As I ran frantically from one group to the next, teenagers ran and jumped off the dunes, the younger ones made sand sculptures, the older set chatted about the future of the club, with its newly acquired opportunities, everyone so excited and happy to participate. As I set up photograph after photograph, I could not help but to think, what a wonderful world it would be if more people could be so utterly at ease with themselves, their bodies, and each other.

Where young and old could, at the mere mention, drop everything they are doing for simple, spontaneous fun.

Later that evening, Osmond and I talked some more about the brilliant future ahead. At one point he excused himself for a few minutes. Upon returning he explained that there was a new teenager in the camp, and he had gone to ask the local teens to introduce themselves and include the new one in their activities, which they were happy to do. I thought this a tiny, but so very significant remark on which to close. This is an example of the caring attitude that seems to prevail here. An attitude that makes it a most deserving club, to have stumbled across a fortune in sand. And a club, with an attitude which we could all learn a great deal from.

So there you have it. "The Golden Sands of Air-Soleil", that promise to make this thriving jewel of a Nudist camp, shine all the more brightly, have already given many of us a joyful thrill that we will remember forever.

We'd always thought of cruises as the province of the geriatric and the predatory elderly widows where one donned formal dress for dinner and not our cup of tea at all. That was until we reached the inside back cover of BN 112. "Join the best nude cruise staff in the world" said the advertisement. And the pictures of the staff showed they were neither geriatric nor predatory. In fact, they looked positively young, healthy and inviting. The pictures did not lie: they turned out to be twenty of the liveliest and nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

We wrote to Bare Necessities Tour and Travel Company in Austin Texas, and, by return mail, received an even more attractive brochure: a new 100 million dollar ship; 900 passenger capacity; gourmet dining; pool; sauna; Olympic spa; nude island destinations; and clothes-free throughout. This sounded heaven indeed. And so it proved to be.

We wasted no time in ringing Bare Necessities. Disaster struck: they were fully booked. But they had a waiting list. And four days later we had a cancellation. It was ours and excitement reigned. We booked our flight to Orlando and a motel room at Cypress Cove both ways. Cypress Cove offered us free coach transport to West Palm Beach to meet the ship and we set off with three coach loads and about 120 other people on the Sunday morning. We stopped for a buffet lunch of chicken and fresh orange juice at the new Sunnier Palms naturist resort followed by a dip in their pool surrounded by tropical trees. Then we were on our way to West Palm Beach and there it was: a huge and beautiful ocean liner, the CROWN JEWEL, 537 feet long, shining white in the Florida sunshine. Formalities completed, our luggage was spirited to our stateroom, and we were admiring our double bed and all mod cons, including television and satellite telephone. At 5 o'clock sharp, we glided smoothly out of harbour and as West Palm Beach slipped away, the Tannoy announced "We are now out of harbour and you can be out of your clothes. Everyone can disrobe". And we did. But our joy was short-lived. A few minutes later, a discreet knock on the door brought a smart young messenger with an invitation to us to dine at the Captain's table at 8.45!

That was the one place on the ship where clothes were required: the Bon Vivant Dining Room. But what clothes! And what food! We dined on the best food we'd had in years with red and white wine, a seven course meal, and all the trimmings.

And the clothes we'd been told that the dress would be informal. That was an understatement. There were "grass" skirts with painted-on tops and leis, chiffon dresses, lacy blouses, lots of decoration and precious little coverage. But the crew took it all in their stride and service was friendly and fabulous. It was even suggested that many of them had offered to forgo their leave to work on this particular cruise!

For the rest of the cruise and the rest of the ship, clothes were entirely optional except in port and few passengers wore any at all. Meals were served almost round the clock, starting with breakfast at 6 am and running through until a Mexican Buffet up to l am. Quality was good enough to tempt the most determined dieter. Fruit juices, tea and coffee were free in the Palm Court café all day and free ice cream was served by the pool in the afternoons. In port, nudity was confined to the inner parts of the ship and the sun deck which was screened from view (and the wind). Bars by the pool and throughout the ship served drinks and waiters were always to hand.

Our first day was spent at sea. Apart from lying in the sun, the ship was alive with activities, all listed in the daily ship's Chronicle. The lazy could lie by the salt water pool on the upper deck. The energetic could exercise with aerobics, body-building, slimming, games in and around the pool, or just walk a mile - seven times round the deck. Indoor activities were there too: trivia, bingo, bridge, talks, fashion shows, puzzle sessions, craft workshops, golf putting, ping pong, shuffle board, and a full-blooded casino with slot machines, poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and other means of disposing of your pocket money! All the ordinary shops were there as well as an "Under the Sun Boutique" selling nudist fashions - all designed to decorate without concealing - operated by members of the Paradise Lakes Club. There was no excuse for going to bed early either.

Every night professional or amateur entertainment was laid on in the main lounge, the first mainly clothed, the latter mainly unclothed. Music was provided in the other bars and lounges to suit most tastes and there was always a choice of films on the cabin television.

The second day saw us off the coast of Mexico. The energetic embarked at Playa del Carmen for trips into the Yucatan peninsula to see the Maya and Toltec ruins. The longest journey was a 250-mile round trip to Chichén Itzá the two thousand-year-old site with pyramids and temples in a clearing in the middle of the Mexican jungle; others went to the lesser and nearer ruins at Tulum or to Cancun and the shops.

Those who stayed on the ship to Cozumel island had a choice of an island tour, sea snorkelling, a fiesta boat party, or a sea cruise over the reefs in a glass-bottomed boat. We'd have loved to try them all. But we'd gone to Chichén Itzá, a twelve hour journey, and came across on the ferry from the mainland only just in time to catch the ship which left as we clambered aboard.

We needed the next day at sea to recover and to lie in the Caribbean sun, cooled by the breeze, and enjoy a visit to the bridge to see just how a modern ship is run: no tiller wheel, no binnacle, no voice pipe, no telegraph to the engine room; just two officers and rows of switches and computer and radar screens. So much for the romance of the sea!

The next morning we reached Port Antonio, Jamaica, and were piped off the ship by a typical local steel band to another frustrating choice of destinations: a clothes-free rafting excursion on the tranquil waters of the Rio Grande, floating gently, two to a raft, between the forest trees, scented flowering shrubs and tropical birds of the river bank; a picnic and swim on a beautiful nudist beach recommended by the Jamaica Tourist Board; or a tour of Port Antonio, Dragon Bag and Boston Bay to see the local scenery and craft market. We'd have liked to do all three!

Thursday was another day at sea, with our tans getting deeper by the hour. Some escapees from the freezing weather of Canada and the northern USA had underestimated the power of the Caribbean sun, and suffered accordingly. We had been to Fuerteventura before Christmas and were acclimatised. But those who were not prepared for the power of the tropical sun took shelter on the shady lower decks nursing their reddened bodies. Fortunately, the sufferers were in a very small minority.

When Friday dawned, we were anchored off the most beautiful beach we had ever seen: the silver-white sand of the deserted island of Little San Salvador in the Bahamas. With little ado, the lifeboats were lowered and shuttled virtually all the 830 passengers ashore. The sea was calm and clear and the beach stretched for a mile or so in both directions.

The ship's crew brought a barbecue lunch ashore and everyone ate in style and in the nude, just as one dreams of on a desert island.

Photo: Paul Taylor

Needless to say, no-one wanted to leave and the ship had weighed anchor and started out before the last tenders brought the stragglers aboard, not that some of them would have minded being marooned there!

Next morning we were back to reality. The ship was buzzing with activity and we were entering the strait leading to West Palm Beach.

Goodbyes were said and letters promised and we poured through the Customs and Immigration to our waiting coaches. Back at Cypress Cove, we relaxed by the lake and recovered our land legs. But it was an experience we shall never forget - a beautiful ship, idyllic scenery and the kind of friendship one rarely finds in this textile world.

CLUB NEWS

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB Inc.

SUMMER IS COMING - At last winter appears to be over, although the odd recent snow flurry makes you wonder at times. But bulbs are springing up everywhere, and have you noticed how much lighter it is in the morning now? But winter brought some problems for the club with burst pipes and shattered toilets. Good news though, thanks to the efforts of Patrick & Mullen, Associated Plumbers, the water problems are now over, and we have hot and cold running water in the house and a toilet that can be used.

The repair job seemed so ordinary at first, just a matter of plugging off the wet-back and repairing it - and then ... where's this water coming from? Better repair it. Oh hell! A pipe has sheared off! Okay, get it fixed, turn the water on and then - drip, drip, drip. ##@!@%. By this time, it was getting late, so off goes the water again and back home. A couple of days later, Steve and John return to the club and start tearing off the wall in the shower area. Great, here's the split, fix it, run on the water - not another leak! Off comes another wall. In the space of about two metres, they found 12 splits in the pipe, and we now have three walls removed. We've got it this time they say - turn on the water. What's this water shooting out the wall? Too late to continue, so off with the water again and away home. Back again for the third time two weeks later (it snowed meantime) and off with another wall, in the laundry now. Aha - here's the split. Fix it - turn on the water - NO LEAKS!

The club's thanks must go to these two people for their sterling efforts and time and materials donated. Heaven knows what it would have cost the club otherwise.

HIBISCUS COAST SUN CLUB

Summer is just around the corner and members are flocking to the club.

The tree planting is well underway. A number of other major improvements are planned for the summer including powered sites. Many thanks to our Auckland sister clubs for their wonderful socials and sauna evenings. Many thanks to all those who have attended our hot pool nights over the past year, a small contingent of our members will be going down to the Wellington rally. All the best for 1996 from all at "Kirikau ".

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

Hi to all. It's been a long, cold and wet winter. For all those looking forward to summer, well it should be just around the corner! Roll on those long, hot summer days!

There will be quite a lot happening over summer, especially in the New Year and we hope to see a lot of visitors, both new and hopefully some of the great people we met last summer. We are looking at doing another bus trip. Those who went on last year's bus trip didn't stop talking about it for days. This time the trip will be more suited to people with young families and also to older people as well as there won't be the strenuous walking that was involved with last year's trip.

Our notorious New Year's Eve Party will be held again. Last year we had an outdoors party and the weather was good to us. It was a lot of fun.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB Inc.

One would be forgiven for thinking that the Canterbury Sun Club had shut down for the winter. Nothing could be further from the truth. My excuse is that I have been singing in a "chorus of ewes". The absence of a Canterbury "scribe" is also attributed to the fact that "she" is off gallivanting around the northern hemisphere, having escaped the big chill and now regularly writes home of her adventures in the warmer climes of Europe.

Sunning herself on nudist beaches in France, you know the sort of thing I mean.

However it is not all chilly weather here at "Pineglades" and the Thursday Club has taken advantage of the many sunny days so often found in Canterbury after a good frosty morning. Weekends have also drawn many out of the woodwork for a chat, a game of miniten or petanque and the annual mid-winter dinner was a sumptuous feast enjoyed by a very colourful crowd. Thankfully our spa/sauna was readily available the following day to thaw out the few (fool)-hardy members who braved the cold pool the following day for the annual mid-winter plunge.

As always our Brass Monkey Ball was enjoyed by a good crowd determined to have a good time and due ceremony was given to the presentation of the Brass Monkey Balls and Nipples to a couple who have chosen to reside in Antarctica (sorry Alexandra) and who have done lots of "good deeds" over the years.

Our tree planting and grounds management plan has been carried out with tremendous zeal by our "greenies" and the resultant shelter belts and tree plantings will be a tremendous asset for the future.

Like many other clubs around this time, our AGM was held in May. One of the most positive outcomes was no increase in fees and a considerable reduction in our joining fee also gained approval. Visitors to Pineglades will note also that our camping fees have been restructured.

Among the major projects underway are the resurfacing of the No 1 miniten court, children's play area and the club rooms is to have a new entrance encompassing a store room and the adjacent toilets all under one roof.

CLUB NEWS

Blossom appears on the trees now and spring bulbs around the grounds are making a welcome appearance (this is September), so too are the number of new members making the most of our facilities and friendship.

All augurs well for a top notch summer Pineglades. Why not join us - naturally you will be most welcome.

NATURIST WALKERS
(Christchurch Free Beach Group)

Brrh! It's been a colder-than-usual winter, but the group has kept going with social and out-door activities, including a pot-luck lunch at a member's home and two spa/sauna and social evenings at the Canterbury Sun Club. Outings and walks included Orton Bradley Park, McQueen's Pass, Kaiapoi to Pines Beach and Birdlands Nature Reserve.

It is good to have a chat with other members of our Free Beach Group and find out what people would like to do during the summer season. For some, it's simply sun, skinny-dipping, sand and sandwiches at any time when the weather is right. Others - the "Naturist Walkers" - love nothing so much as a brisk uphill climb and a panoramic view, or exploring out-of-the-way places near and far. Others again have joined FBG mainly to support the cause and register their agreement with clothes-optional philosophy. Our summer programme should offer something for everyone.

Several of our members go regularly to Taylor's Mistake which seems to be turning into an accepted clothes-optional beach. Great! We will continue to meet there anytime, using common sense and discretion, naturally. Also on the agenda are trips to the South Canterbury Club near Geraldine, the Otepatotu Scenic Reserve and LeBons Bay on Banks Peninsula and the Methven Walkway, to name but a few.

Our philosophy is to get out and about, meeting others of like mind, who enjoy the health-giving freedom of sun and air on our bodies from time to time, whenever we get the chance. Carpe diem!

Delia at practice

NEW ZEALAND NUDIST FEDERATION Inc.

How was your winter? Did you visit your club and meet with our winter nudists? Isn't it wonderful to have summer with lots of sunshine shining down on us now!

First the sad news ... The Nudist Information Day that I wrote about in the last Naturist has been postponed for one year. We have the required information as to Council By-law requirements etc, all we need is a longer promotional period, with leaflets being handed out to other organisations, stall holders, buskers, bands, etc., and receive back confirmed bookings. To make the Information Day successful, it would require a paddock full of booths, and all the other requirements such a day requires.

In short we are looking at a mini Expo next year.

What the Auckland based clubs decided on, for our Information Day this year, was to have our own booth at an established Expo in the Epsom Show-grounds called "Mind and Body Exhibition". Here we played the promotional video that went for 2 hours and had lots of information placed into the Information Packs. We placed inside: a magazine, common questions asked by non-nudists and answers to those questions, a map of New Zealand showing where all the Nudist Clubs were, as well as Free Beach groups, contacts of persons of the club, as well as physical addresses and an invitation to visit the four clubs in Auckland. These packs were ideal ways to stylize the needs of the inquirer without placing any pressure to visit or join. Would you like to obtain a sample pack for your Information Day/Open Day? Please write to NZNF Secretary: Peter Moosberger at PO Box 74257 Market Road, and he will whip one into the post for you.

If there is an exhibition on in your Community, or a Gala Day event that you feel will target members of the public who are open minded, then please GO FOR IT! It was a lot of fun participating in the event and the people were very friendly. It was interesting to hear the comments the public made and questions asked. What made the whole thing worth while was the fact that the public are as only closed minded as we are. Being open about nudity and the many recreational activities available to nudists along with the social side of the organisation brought many eager enquirers to the booth. We had people who have been looking for years to join a Nudist Club, thanking us for being open about our lifestyle.

So there you go! Well worth the effort. Good positive feedback! Isn't that what we all need to keep us on the right track.

The enthusiasm from other clubs around New Zealand has been gratifying to see and hear.

CLUB NEWS

It is when we all work towards a common goal that we realise that times and attitudes towards nudism have changed a great deal and to make the most of the changing trend, we need to TAKE every opportunity available to us to ensure that the positive word of nudism is promoted far and wide. With each club doing their share of promoting the organisation, we can only grow in members, young and old alike. And that's the goal of every club in New Zealand. YAHOO! Soon we may out-number the "textiles". Then we could look at having nude shopping malls, nude cities, and the likes - We could soon enjoy the freedom of shopping with no clothes on, in Auckland ... COULD HAPPEN!!

Well that's it for me for another quarter, see you at the Wellington Rally. Game of Miniten anyone?

Nudism is Natural.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

Stop the world, I want to get off! Thank goodness the club is open all year round. It's nice to escape the pressures of work and city to the grounds well occupied almost every weekend. It has been a bit chilly at times, such as the morning Sharyn went dancing through the frost in just her gumboots. Not for long, though! Roll on summer.

I wonder if our latest tourist attraction is still performing as you read this? I was skiing the top tows of Mt Ruapehu two days before the big eruption of 23/9/95. Lots of steam venting while we were there. We saw the mushroom cloud (nuclear-free fallout, thanks Mr Chirac) of the Saturday eruption from Tauranga, so it would have been clearly visible from Rotorua. The mountains can be seen from a spot 10 minutes drive from Rotorua. Another scenic attraction put on just for you, our lovely visitors.

Speaking of lovely visitors, some have been a bit porky recently of the "oink oink" type.

I wouldn't be rude about our usual guests. There is an area of hot mud not far from Top End that has become a centrally heated bedroom for pigs. Wouldn't you find somewhere warm over this cold period? As the weather warms up they should go back to deeper bush again.

So who will welcome you to Rotorua? Richard and Chris, that's who! Welcome to our new custodians, who have set up house in Central Park. Be sure to call in for the usual Rotorua welcome!

Merry Christmas to all fellow nudists: please take care on the roads.

THE NETWORK - Profile of the Membership

Naturists who are listed as members of "THE NETWORK" are couples, families and singles of both sexes who represent just about every known variation to the Naturist lifestyle. The members live in most countries where the people demand the right to spend their leisure time without clothing.

In many countries, to be nude is illegal and in others nudity is perfectly acceptable and this reflects on the popularity of Naturism, but even in repressive countries, individuals and small groups of people meet in places where they can safely strip off to relax and enjoy themselves - nude! Where there is a will there is a way.

Because Naturism is a sensuous lifestyle, its followers both enjoying being nude and being with other nude people and quite naturally they also like to share other peoples experiences which helps them to learn about how others enjoy their Naturism.

"THE NETWORK" has many members who spend their whole lives without clothes, and there are others who are only able to go nude on holiday, or on rare visits to far away nude beaches and clubs, and for these, the link with other members is very important.

For the majority of members the exchange of photographs is important too, not only so that they can see what your correspondents and their normal surroundings look like, but sometimes things appear in photographs that the photographer didn't realise may be of interest to others.

Very often things can be seen in photographs that we receive which can lead to greater understanding of other people and their Naturism. What is commonplace to someone living in Australia, or some other equally far away place, will be unusual and interesting to people from Europe and this can often lead to interesting exchanges between the members.

Members of "THE NETWORK" are aged between early twenties to late retirement ages and are singles, couples and families. Many of them have dozens of friends all over the world through the system, and spend most of their time writing to them. Others have only one or two correspondents who they write to about once each month.

In line with many people from every walk of life, our members have a great interest in other people and enjoy knowing them, but also, as with other people, if the letters they receive are lacking in interest they will be reluctant to write back.

Rarely does a week go by without Pauline and I receiving a letter from some member or other telling us about how much they are enjoying their membership and how glad they are that they joined us. So many people are keen to know other, like minded naturists and so it makes good sense to take the opportunities that are offered through this unique system, "THE NETWORK".

Also available is the 'International Nudist' Bed and Breakfast and Accommodation Registry. This contains details of overnight and longer stay accommodation and the smaller, less formal Naturist resorts that are available in countries covered by "THE NETWORK" and any other Naturist locations requiring a mention.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

In April 1993 this club purchased a most delightful orchard property at Matangi and by October had received title. In September that year we lodged an application for planning consent with the Waikato District Council and following this hearing permission was granted for the club to proceed with development work. However people living in the vicinity appealed on a wide variety of issues. As a result of this appeal, based on the spray issue, this part of the application consent was refused by the planning judge. As such we lost our right to proceed with the development of amenities and a camping area. Do we sell? Do we start again? We didn't give up.

Throughout this period of time the committee have been impressed by the loyalty of its members who have given it great support.

Undoubtedly the move away from a more isolated area has been beneficial as there is noticeably more members attending the grounds on a fine weekend than ever went up the Mountain at Pironga. Sadly we have had little to offer visitors other than a very pleasant relaxing environment, although we have installed a small swimming pool but for that "cuppa" you still need to bring your thermos with you. We as a club have not been inactive, in fact we have had more social get togethers than ever before, such as fortnightly BBQ's right through the winter held at members homes with appropriate covered facilities so that the weather did not interfere with any proposed activity. A polar-bear swim, ten pin bowling, pot luck dinners etc. All these activities have been well attended such is the support of the members.

During this period of time the committee of the Waikato Outdoor Society have been working extremely hard on the preparation and documentation of material in readiness for the lodging of another hearing with Council. This hearing was held on Wednesday 27th of September 1995. And, "Yes" we have come another step closer with a very favourable reaction from Council. They have granted consent. However, we still have a waiting period of three weeks to allow the objectors to appeal, should they so wish.

I'm sure that if we all keep thinking positively we will achieve this goal and then soon we will be looking back and saying the frustration was all worthwhile as we stride confidently forward to the future and that the Waikato area will be served by a naturist facility that will be tops in the country.

OBITUARY

It is with great sadness that we report the recent death of Mavis Robertshaw. Mavis was a founder member and life member of The Orchard Sun Club. She became a member of the nudist movement in 1970 when she and Eddie joined the Otago Sun Club. She remained a member through the various transitions of the clubs in Dunedin and was secretary for many years. Mavis was very active in the nudist movement and was never shy when it came to being a spokesperson for the Club, in private and in the news media. She was a great fund raiser, and ran several national raffles. Mavis with Eddie was a regular attendee at National Nudist Rallies and has made many friends in this club and others throughout the country. She will be sorely missed.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

While in Cairns (Queensland, Australia) last May, Sharyn and I went by bus to the Undara Lava Lakes. On the way we stopped at Mareeba (inland from Cairns in the Atherton Tablelands) and in the bookshop I saw the NZ Naturist displayed in the general section of magazines. I bought the latest Aust S & H and talked about the NZ Naturist with the owner. She was interested to see my contribution to it.

NZ Naturist does get around.

Graham McGregor

Dear Editor,

After devouring every article and its accompanying photographic display in the last issue my mind wavered between commenting on your editorial and the Letter to the Editor from Ray Coates (WOS). Since the issues that Ray has raised deserve far more attention than this column will allow, I would suggest that Ray conduct a seminar at the next rally at Wellington to discuss these issues with the folks who are keen to participate and to express their own viewpoint.

So to your editorial. I would have to agree that most clubs do discriminate against single men. Many would also agree that each club has some wonderful single guys of all ages to associate with and yes, these blokes can usually be relied on at working bees.

Instead of practising discrimination against males, perhaps we should be giving more support to attracting females and making their first tentative steps onto our grounds as comfortable as possible. Surely one day per year can be set aside to invite your mum and your sisters and/or a few friends out to the grounds for a women only picnic afternoon.

Before you all cry SEXIST! and start beating your chests at the advent of another "Women Only Day" spare a thought for the many women for whom the thought of seeing or being seen in a clothes free environment by members of the opposite sex is a very real fear. However with a sensitive and caring approach this inhibition can be overcome.

There is a huge market of new members out there, both males and females of all ages. Surely we all want our wonderful organisation to grow. Why are so many intent on denying others the opportunity to go natural.

Naturally yours

Kay Burrows

Dear Sir,

New Zealand Naturist is now read by over half of New Zealand households - a dream sure - but wouldn't it be good for nudist club membership and public attitude if more people purchased and read "our" magazine.

The "Naturist" magazine must be the best and most cost effective way of promoting the nudist lifestyle and yet I believe this opportunity is lost for one simple reason.

The cover almost always shows a photo of an attractive young naked lady - so does Playboy, Penthouse and all of the other girlie magazines. So what image are we conveying to the general public, a healthy, family oriented fun atmosphere, a magazine they want to purchase and read, no, we are conveying the nude female glamour image to be purchased by single males.

Most bookstore owners must agree with my view because where do they display the "NZ Naturist" - in the men's magazine section along with all of the other girlie magazines.

Nudist magazines don't carry age restrictions on sale and aren't required to be displayed in plastic bags which must mean it is the storekeeper who decides it belongs amongst the girlie magazines.

One exception was issue #148 March 1994 with two bikini clad ladies on the cover. On closer examination they were naked but wearing body painted bikinis, because of the "clothes" our local bookstore displayed this edition amongst the "normal" magazines i.e. women's and sports section.

Surely this sends a strong message. Change the cover and our magazine would be available to many more people and be read by the right sort of person.

The first few seconds of reading the cover and discovering what articles of interest are contained inside, sells a magazine. Look at any successful magazine, the cover contains a lot of information, perhaps the "NZ Naturist" should be looking at this type of format.

If the "NZ Naturist" is intended as only an in house magazine to keep existing nudists informed, then no change of cover is needed. But if the magazine is to be used as one of the main promotional tools of the NZ Nudist movement, which I believe it should be; then let's change to an eye catching format, which at the same time would offend no-one.

If we could "tidy-up" the cover we may even be able to get a copy of the magazine into all medical waiting rooms. What an opportunity this would be, from my experience, magazines seem to stay for years in doctors and dentists waiting rooms.

My criticism of the cover photos is in no way a criticism of either the magazine, the editors or of any of the photo subjects but of the totally wrong image I believe we are conveying. I hope the editorial staff and the new federation executive can get together to produce an eye catching magazine that is able to be displayed amongst the sport, health and general interest section of every bookstore up and down the country. With thousands of bookshops, dairies and service stations the potential readership is large.

I know the "NZ Naturist" and overseas nudist magazines have for many years had nude or topless on the front cover, but perhaps now is the time to change.

Yours sincerely

Gary Gwynne

Disappointed you never sent us any exciting photographs that we could use on our cover - Editor

Dear Editor,

Thank you for publishing our article about the NUDVAN Club in issue No 153. Unfortunately I omitted to tell you about the accompnying photo. This photo was actually taken at Kerosene Creek when we were on our way to Rotota for a weekend of fun and relaxation. The photographer was none other than Allan Hunt. I hope you can publish this correction for me as our committee has given me a "Rark Up" for not supplying the correct details.

Yours sincerely

Dear Editor,

Tymosen - Solvennerne

During my holiday in Copenhagen in July, I enjoyed an afternoon in the company of Danish naturists at "Tymosen".

Originally swamp land, Tymosen meaning "quiet swamp" today supports one of Denmark's six official clubs of the Danish Naturist Union.

Solvennerne translates as Sun Friends and the club has between 80 and 90 members. Facilities include club house, large grassed areas and swimming pool, kitchen and showers etc. Miniten and ball games including table tennis can be enjoyed there. There is also plenty of space for caravans and tents in the grounds which are surrounded by beautiful trees.

Centrally located out of Copenhagen, Tymosen can reached by train to Ballerup then bus to the club grounds outside the village of Ledøje.

I was warmly welcomed on my arrival and shown around the club grounds. Afternoon tea at 3pm outside the club house included a birthday celebration with Danish layer cakes.
