GUEST EDITORIAL

From personal observation over almost a decade of membership of nudist clubs, I have become firmly of the opinion that nudists in particular have a masochistic streak which drives them to destroy that which they claim to enjoy most. Certainly the efforts to which some minor empire builders will go to get their own way in their clubs can only be classed as subversive to the whole structure and concept of nudism, and a definite block to growth and progress of their respective clubs.

We have seen numerous instances over the years where clubs are split in two and then split again because of warring factions who will not give an inch regardless of what would be best for the club.

How many clubs can you enter and very quickly find that if you talk to one group another does not want to know you? Petty? Childish? Stupid?

Yes, and many more descriptive adjectives. How about Bloody Mindedness.

Is it a coincidence that these clubs are the ones at a standstill or even going backwards.

Apathy is the other main killer in clubs. Apathy, and the type of person who wants to be on committee but does not want to do any of the work.

Recognise any of these?

The secretary who does not answer letters - who does not pass on club notices or invitations - who does not follow up membership enquiries - who is just too tired!

The President who is a figurehead - who has got where he wants to be because nobody else wanted the job! The type of president who doesn't want his name known because it might hurt his job, reputation, promotion, or whatever!

Or the committee member who goes to meetings (sometimes), never opens his mouth to any useful purpose, and certainly doesn't want the responsibility of a job thrust upon him. Even worse is the one who accepts the job and then makes no effort to carry it out.

THESE, plus the apathy of the common member, are what is holding nudist clubs from developing. You don't necessarily need a loud forceful president in charge, but you do need one with a sense of purpose, who will see he gets the type of committee that will work with him, and who is not frightened to march into his local council offices, or hardware merchant, or contractor, or whatever, and say firmly "I'm Joe Blow from the Haast Sun Club - we're looking for an item of equipment for the club - can you help?"

And don't tell me you can't do that in a small town, they're too conservative. You're kidding no one but yourself. You are proving nothing but a lack of guts!

I have in the past had total strangers go out of their way to help my club in various matters. Sometimes to the extent of virtually giving an item away because the fact that you are from a nudist club has caught their attention. And for the occasional loud mouthed idiot you meet, there are 99 people who are interested and polite, and willing to help a club which shows interest in helping itself.

As a mainlander I have a vested interest in seeing the South Island clubs steam ahead. At present, I am sorry to say, it would appear that all but about two South Island clubs are not even in the running when they are compared to their North Island counterparts. Progress at best could be described as sideways, if not actually backwards.

No, it's not population, weather, distance, or anything else. It's keenness, and an enthusiast at the head which will get results. Ask yourselves, how often does your club put out a newsletter, or have an item of interest in "Club Notes", or send a delegate to a N.Z.N.F. meeting?

Is your club consistently advertising for members, or taking every opportunity to keep the club name in the public eye? Does your resident population know roughly where the club is, and do you have a name and phone number at the gate? DO THEY KNOW YOU EXIST?

Publicity gets members, and without an adequate growing membership you cannot develop a property for your enjoyment or to attract further members.

We have the disadvantage in the South Island of being well scattered from top to bottom of the island, but this in itself does not stop a reasonable amount of interclub visiting and an exchange of ideas, and this in turn helps boost the enthusiasm of members of all ranks. Much more support should be given to rallies held at Canterbury and Wellington clubs, and how about a ½ A.G.M. at Hamner Springs?

If the rest of the South Island clubs show some enthusiasm and life Canterbury Club would undoubtedly feel that all the work of a rally was well worth while, and appreciated. And I am sure our North Island neighbours like a change of scenery as much as we do.

It shouldn't be many years before The Orchard Club can produce a rally in Dunedin and then we will feel we really belong to the Nudist Federation.

Think about those deadheads before your next A.G.M. and consider whether you could do better. It is very true, the quotation that says, "You only get out of a club that which you are prepared to put in."

See you around the clubs someday?

Eddie Robertshaw.

PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER'S REPORT

Over the last four years the Nudist Movement in New Zealand has gone through changes which have brought it up to date and are worthy of reflecting upon. Some of these changes are:-

The change of name to the N.Z. Nudist Federation.

The new updated Constitution.

The use of full names by nudists in the movement.

The movement going public and raising money bringing in thousands of dollars to clubs.

A Magazine that is now in world class.

Executive positions being filled by persons with experience.

The movement having the courage to break with tradition in where it holds its annual rallies.

The formation of a Free Beach Group.

The creation of a trust to operate a Nudist National Resort between Taupo and Rotorua, and the Nudist Youth Group, suddenly our teenagers are staying in the movement.

Lastly the emerging feeling of goodwill and co-operation that now exists between clubs throughout New Zealand.

Well, where do we go to from this point? Is there a new era in Nudism about to emerge? With the initial pioneer years behind us shouldn't the clubs get back to what they were all originally set up for?

That is to provide a peaceful environment where anybody can relax and enjoy the wonderful feeling of nudism, whether it be sunbathing, playing sport, socializing, working etc and realize that they are playing a very important role in providing these recreation facilities.

I liken the situation to when you buy your ticket to go to the cinema or theatre. After doing so, you want to sit back, relax and enjoy the entertainment provided. You are not interested in the problems the management have had to bring you that entertainment. If he does involve you in his problem, how many patrons will keep going back to his establishment.

My last comment in this report is that I feel the movement should be constantly seeking out new members with the necessary experience and the movement as a whole at heart. We should see several nominations for the positions on the executive. I for one will not be available next year for nomination so let's get working now on a replacement.

As we move into 1978 let's all try and remember just what nudism is all about, and let us all be better for our experience.

THE GREAT FLUKE RALLY - Tolaga Bay

2nd January 1978

Dear Mum and Dad,

Pity we couldn't make it to Christchurch this Christmas but the attraction at Tolaga Bay was just too much to resist. A rally that had to be the best or the worst.

Well we're here now and it's too good not to share some with you.

We're on a 17 acre paddock surrounded by a horseshoe of hills and closed off from the rural road by the remainder of Ian's farm (Ian is the National President and a great guy). There weren't many campers when we arrived on Boxing Day so we lined up the showers, toilets and water tap and pitched in the middle of the lot. Later arrivals weren't quite so lucky but everyone still seems to be close to everything. As we arrived the huge marquee was being erected - never thought they'd fill it.

This rally is DIFFERENT - no cliquey caravan parties at Tolaga Bay - instead rally parties! The whole atmosphere lends itself to togetherness. How the hell did they do it? The formula seems pretty simple: Take a thirty-odd member host club, add people willing to travel this far minus $14.50 each, take away sophistication and multiply by challenge and divide only by the walls of a tent. The total has to be paradise - there is no other word for it.

The days are subtly broken into three parts. Sports in the morning, far too early for me, but it gives everyone time for what we feel has been sorely lacking in the past - free time! Yesterday we spent two hours laid back watching sheep dogs demonstrating their skills. Remember those dog trials on T.V. when the sheep escaped amongst the cars - well that wasn't showmanship! The organisers have the intelligence to realise that what is common place to them is such a 'buzz' for us city dwellers. It was rumoured that there was a guy on the end of the shears the other day when we saw a couple of sheep join the club. (The shearer seemed reluctant to hang about any more than necessary but a lot of kids and us enjoyed another thing we wouldn't see in the city).

The last part of the day (and early morning for many) has been clearly set aside for the adults. Thought we'd have troubles getting the kids to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings so that we could have the evenings to ourselves but the atmosphere that was created for us is here also for the kids and they sleep securely every night.

Nudists go mad on New Year and this year was no exception. What normally takes a couple of bottles just takes a couple of nudists. It was the last gig of an East Coast group who had been playing for years, and it showed. They were prepared to play as long as we were. Their professionalism combined with the fact that they were camping on the grounds meant they weren't playing for us, they were playing with us. To describe midnight is beyond my capabilities, suffice to say if I could spend New Year with this lot every year I would.

On the evening of the 28th we made the mistake of arriving late at the square dance being held. We missed the caller's earlier instructions but arrived in time to see those that had taken the initiative, bubbling with pleasure. The evening concluded with a demonstration by the local square dancing club. I haven't seen much square dancing but they were incredible.

Some people have got the nerve to grumble about the distance to the local beach - from my memory a rally has never had its own beach, sign posted as such, before. The only thing we are dubious about is the narrow, steep, winding gravel road to it. A picturesque bay with white sand, good surf and surf patrollers from Gisborne who once again were staying amongst the people they were caring for. This drew crowds most afternoons and was the scene for our swimming sports. Cris, not being interested, didn't watch but I did. Thought they were hilarious: they put a buoy out and the idea was to get around it and back before the others. It didn't take long for them to realise that this was no swimming competition but a 'who can run faster in water race', to the disgust of some whose interests lie more in cups than fun - I prefer the fun but there again I wasn't participating. This tends to turn the normal rally, competitive sports into more enjoyable sportsmanship.

Back on the grounds the sports area is well laid out although a little cramped and dusty in this hot weather. Some who normally play on concrete mini-ten courts are finding the lumpy grass hard to play on. The volley ball finals (traditionally the peak of the sporting calendar) between N.Y.C. (Nudist Youth Club) and Wellington had its usual build up, this time thanks to N.Y.C. They had resurrected an old pick-up from the barn and fighting off the fleas liberally coated it with bodies all psyched up for the important match. (N.Y.C. had yet to win a volleyball final.) They arrived on time only to find that some of Wellington's team were still on the mini-ten court. As this was THE final, someone had really goofed and it spoilt the game for us. N.Y.C. coped with it well but didn't seem to be able to put their 'all' into the game. Wellington will be going home with the cup. The ladies' volley ball cup, once again to Auckland Outdoors team.

Friday afternoon almost everyone assembled, in the area set aside for such things, to watch a wood-chopping demonstration. These guys were professionals and showmen. What made it more exciting was that they were competing amongst themselves. We understand that some of them are in the championship bracket. What could have been just showmanship became personalised with a commentator who was prepared to give a little more. I was chosen with five other women to entertain the troops with a display of axe handling. We were each given a 'coach' from the team and mine was gorgeous. I've never felt so absolutely drained as when I'd finished but really enjoyed it along with the crowd - what do you know, I won the cup - a first for South Auckland!

When the local National M.P. Mr Bell opened the rally he spoke well of the movement and gave considerable encouragement to those who would like to see nudism become more accepted in N.Z. One would like to think that all M.P.s, before reviewing the Police Offences Act this year, take the time to visit a nudist club and discover the things Mr Bell and his wife have.

Every rally has its concert with items from different clubs. A little pathos, a lot of humour and even more guts. Wellington took the evening for us with a three star production. This was followed closely by a couple of movingly adapted nursery rhymes which expressed the sentiments of the rally-goers better than we are now.

One routine that bugs me more each day is the public-address system which seems to start about 7.30 am. and dribbles through the day. They began using it wisely, but now it's really bad. Simply mention slikka pads or Rawleigh's products to anyone here and they'll burst into tears. The arrival and pending departure of the various local services (meat, milk, bread and veges) are announced to death so that the more important announcements (like the bar is now open) are lost in the trivia i.e. "we have one brown jandal... wants a lift to Gisborne... silver motor caravan... your slikka pads are melting... and the one I hated most: onto the court now..." (I won't mention the recorded rooster crowing at first light). A notice board placed centrally would eliminate most of these hassles and the public-address would be a godsend instead of a goddamn.

The organisers realise that busy kids make happy parents so have provided two trampolines, big and small pool, sandpits, pony rides, activity centre in the marquee swings, even a cup or two for children's sports and a greasy pig to be caught and kept.

Well, there is a disco tonight - it's bound to be good as it's the last night.

Better round this off now so we can cook dinner and get the stretchers up. As you can see there has been a lot to do if you wanted to, but I haven't even touched on the brilliant pottery demonstration, or the hangi put on by the locals (the only hidden cost - another nice change) a bush walk and a beach-cum-mountain walk and others too.

Next Year with luck the rally will be down your way - they can't hope to better this one. Lets hope that whoever hosts it, allows it to be an expression of themselves, as Gisborne club has here in Tolaga Bay.

Love from Bobbie, Cris and the kids.

SPORTS REPORT

A Rally of which one could use superlatives, but suffice to say thank you sportsmen and women who played their games in true spirit, although the rivalry was there it was friendly, and cross words were hard to find.

I must admit to being quite worried when asked to run the volleyball remembering previous rallies, now I would be prepared to do it again at some future date.

Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from this rally, where conditions were not always first class, people gave of their best, and even if the standard of play was not up to past performances everyone enjoyed themselves, and to my mind that is more important and what our movement is all about, allowing people to relax and enjoy life.

One important thing I am sure is that the best players won through so that conditions did not make any difference to the end result.

Although for future organisers of Volleyball; if faced with adverse weather conditions it would prove almost impossible to complete the 79 games that were played at this rally. I would suggest a Knockout competition instead of a round robin, and if time allowed play for positions.

With the willing help of Neil Charles, Jim and Graeme all of the sports went through very smoothly, even the running - swimming events were enjoyed by the competitors.

This Rally will always be remembered by me as "never was so much done by so few for so many".

All in all a tremendous Rally.

  N.Y.C. Rally Report
  from Fred Rebers.

Although the N.Y.C. rally wasn't supposed to have started until after the Tolaga Bay rally, ours must have really begun at Tolaga because of the way we did everything, went everywhere together. At Tolaga too, we were able to camp together, out of the way of the older folk, and this gave us a great chance to establish the N.Y.C. rally spirit. It probably helped us too in planning strategy for the games; our Number One Volleyball team won every game they played. (Except for the finals!) However, our arrival at the courts for the finals will probably be remembered for a long time.

One other part of the main rally which we thoroughly enjoyed was that beach. Emil's Land Rover came in well here, with that tyre dragging behind the only one tyred vehicle on the beach, with its one or two passengers perched on top, dragging along the sand behind the 'rover.

So much for the Tolaga rally; let's tell you about our rally, the N.Y.C. rally.

Wellington clubhouse - under construction

Photo:Fred Rebers, N.Y.C.

We loaded our vehicles and left Tolaga on the first leg of our trip to Rotorua. This proved, rather eventful for three of our members; George, on the way through the Waioeka Gorge saw the gravel at extremely close quarters - his bike's front wheel locked on him on a corner, but luckily he and the bike suffered nothing worse than a few scratches. Halfway through the gorge we stopped for a rest and a chat and some photos, and it was soon after this that Emil contracted a bad case of punctures. Three in a row! Worse, two tyres were totally annihilated, so Emil spent most of the remaining day chasing all over the Tauranga district hunting for new ones. Then, to cap it all, about thirty miles out of Rotorua, Warwick's bike chain punched a hole in the lower engine allowing the oil to run out. Quite a sudden stop, when the engine seized! With no vehicle passing to help out, Peter decided to tow Warwick to Rotorua with his bike. All in all, a very eventful trip.

But it was worth it when we got to the Blue Lake. We spent that night around a camp fire, with part of our view out over the lake.

Next morning Warwick decided that desperate measures were needed; he traded his bike on a Suzuki RE 5, and that seemed to signal the end of our misfortunes. The trip through to New Plymouth was a good run with only a few exhaust problems suffered by Leslie, Emil and me. Once in New Plymouth we headed towards the lower slopes of Mount Egmont, where the Taranaki club is situated. This club is beautifully placed, with a view of New Plymouth to the fore and the snowy peak of Mount Egmont behind. Some helpful Taranaki members met us to show us the ropes so it wasn't long before we were well settled.

We pitched our tents then went over to the clubhouse for dinner - bread, soup and goat. The goat turned out to be really good, probably because of the advice offered by twenty nine would-be chefs. At this point I managed to pop a Lemon and Paeroa bottle top into my eye. It was a beautiful shiner and I give the true story here to quell some of the rumours which are still being muttered abroad.

The next day, Thursday, a few of us went into New Plymouth for sightseeing while the rest sunbathed at the club grounds. In the afternoon reporters from the local paper came up to interview us and took a few photos while they were there. In the evening one of the Taranaki members invited us to a showing of some of his slides. They were a fantastic set and the evening proved really interesting.

Friday, and everyone woke early as we had decided to go for a tramp up Mount Egmont. We had breakfast, sorted out some warm clothing - just in case the weather turned bad - and piled into Leon's van and Emil's 'rover. With only one stop, at a dairy for refreshments, we moved on up the road to the mountain. At the beginning of the tracks, we decided which one we would take, signed the destination book and headed on. Before we'd gone half a mile we decided that a rest was due, and then that over, we struggled on for another full mile before we stopped again. This time we were high enough and in the clear enough to be able to admire the view of the surrounding country, with Mount Ruapehu clear in the distance. Then, the last stage, scrambling the last two hundred feet or so up to the snow. We stripped and cooled off; flying snowballs helped a lot.

Back at the relay station, we climbed the tower before we headed off down the four wheel drive track to the vans. The tramp was about four and a half miles, but there wasn't one of us who didn't enjoy it.

On the way back to the club, we stopped off at a handcraft village, which made an interesting and refreshing break. Back at the club, we found three baby rabbits sitting, almost dead in the blazing sun, outside their burrow. There were blowflies going in and out of the hole, so we concluded that the mother was probably dead. One of the girls had an eyedropper. She used this to feed milk to the babies and by that evening they were pretty lively again. After dinner we all went to a sauna in town to ease our tired muscles, then came back to the club to a good night's sleep.

On Saturday breakfast was served at about ten thirty; no one was up before that.

In the afternoon we were invited to go on a bush walk on a property belonging to one of the Taranaki club member. This turned out to be a rock-hopping photographic spree, up a stream, over boulders and then a bush walk back. Some of us returned later that afternoon for some portrait photos to be taken.

We spent the evening wandering around Pukekura Gardens. It was fantastic, with huge coloured lights everywhere, shining through the trees, on a fountain, over garden bed, on ponds. We finished the evening listening to a free concert put on in the park.

Next morning, our Wellington members were packed and gone before the rest of us had time to wipe the sleep from our eyes - most of them had to start work on the following day. We who were left spent much of the morning packing and saying our goodbyes before we headed off on our own ways.

Another N.Y.C. rally was over.

PHOTOGRAPHING THE NUDE   BY JOHN BYRNE

PART THREE: COMPOSITION

A person who 'clicks', his camera at a subject without giving any thought to his subject or its surroundings, takes a snapshot. One who 'composes' a picture which he intends to capture on film, takes a photograph. The amateur photographer must learn to visualize his picture in print. Picture composition is a matter of visual judgement which improves with experience. Study the works of notable photographers as guides to arranging the subject within the picture frame.

In any setting, the vital issue is your model. All other elements within the picture only help to establish the mood. These elements should serve to complement what the young lady is doing. The choice of model is therefore, dependent on what you are trying to accomplish.

    B B A A

Body shapes alter in appearance as lighting and angle of vision alter. Your model's assets may be played against the features or parts that are not suitable. Use lighting and camera angle to emphasize one part while minimising the other.

It is difficult to believe that the same model was used in photographs 'A' and 'B'.

Photo 'A' portrays no mood or character. It was taken from a greater (down-view) height with poor lighting arrangement, bad posture and no background to aid the already lifeless picture.

Photograph 'B' was taken from a lower (up-view) height in order to emphasize the model's legs. Lighting arrangement was far superior to that of photo 'A' and the background was chosen to complement the mood of the picture. The model was able to use something in the setting which provided some security for her to have a feeling of involvement. I kept talking to the model while shooting photo 'B'. Whatever I said was designed to help her express herself.

AUSTRALIAN NUDIST FEDERATION ANNUAL CONVENTION

The 9th Annual Convention Sports Rally was hosted by the Sunseekers Club of Western Australia between December 28th and January 6th.

Sunseekers hosted the A.N.F. Convention Rally in 1972, and for those returning again to witness the progress during the past five years, and for the "first timers" the club development, beauty of grounds, organisation and friendliness (experienced at all annual rallies), all combined to achieve yet another highly successful and extremely enjoyable function.

December 29th the W.A. State Minister for Education Hon. P. Jones officially opened the 9th Australian Nudist Federation Conference - in what can only be described as our most impressive ceremony to date. The Minister praised the self supporting community group attitudes of the nudist movement and in particular gave worthy acknowledgement to our host club Sunseekers, who, under the guidance of their President Mr Fred Gibson, had completed magnificent multi-usage sporting and social facilities culminating in the finest two storey brick club house that any club would like to have!

December 30th was Convention Meeting day with delegates from fourteen of our twenty affiliated clubs being at the table, plus the successful applications of four new affiliates: Sunshine Families Nudist Holiday Ranch, Queensland: Ninde Park Sun Club, South Australia: Latrobe Valley Nudist Club, Victoria: and Sol, in Victoria.

The A.N.F. Executive for next year remain unchanged, with Alan Neicho of Victoria as President. Trevor Rose from South Australia as Vice President Mary Weston is Secretary / Treasurer and Ted Weston Assistant Secretary, both from Victoria.

The Host Club for 1978 will be The Three Bears of Queensland, where it is expected that the "far north" affiliated clubs will be in a position to attend and participate in far greater strength than in past years. This we all look forward to with enthusiasm.

It was obvious from Club reports that great progress was made during past year, with continuing steady growth expected. Increased club membership was attributed to the "Free Beach Campaign", commenced incidentally in 1972 at the Sunseekers hosted convention; also the willingness of many clubs and their committees/members to take advantage of the media to further promote our aims and ideals of nudism.

The meeting was fruitful in many ways - with the adoption of the Australian New Zealand Club Guide, undertaken by Sunseekers last year and credit and thanks by acclamation was given to Ena Marklew, Val and Mike Gill for their tremendous effort.

The Sports Standardisation Rules Booklet, undertaken last year by A.N.F. President Alan Neicho was also adopted. This will certainly make future Sports Rallies easier to organise and was long overdue.

Conference delegates approved the printing of an A.N.F. car sticker and A.N.F. information Brochure.

Congratulations were unanimous to New Zealand in becoming the New Zealand Nudist Federation!

A 'lively' meeting closed with renewed awakening and support for our Australian Nudist Federation, now 24 clubs strong.

The Sports Rally results saw the trophies going to many clubs, and the friendly spirit shown by our sportswomen and men was fine - and the participation and enthusiasm of the JUNIORS, both in the sport and also at a social level (co-ordinated beautifully by Gwen, Nick and Max of Sunseekers) was the greatest impression this 9th A.N.F. Convention left me with. The children are our future nudist club members and our greatest core, and with our continued encouragement and inclusion of them as Sunseekers did, the Australian Nudist Federation can only grow from strength to strength in the finest possible way... through our nudist children who have been fortunate to grow and develop from a small age within our way of life which surely is basic, beautiful and totally honest.

Mary Weston,
A.N.F. Secretary.

N.Z.N.F. OFFICERS REPORTS

Secretary        LES WELLINGTON

The Annual General Meeting of any organisation is the forum for discussing matters of mutual interest, and the A.G.M. of the N.Z. Nudist Federation is no exception. Council members were informed of the activities of Federation Officers during the past year, and in their turn were able to pass on to these officers their views on how they felt the Federation should conduct its business in the succeeding year. I am sure that all those present would have left the meeting with the feeling that only by working together can the movement progress in today's changing society. By and large any differences of opinion before and during the meeting were dispelled in the interest of the common cause, progress. Clubs and their members will have been informed by now of the discussions and decisions which took place at the meeting, with the membership ever aware that they too must become involved in the decision making by ensuring that their own committees know where they want the movement to go, and that these ides are passed on to the executive.

In mentioning the general membership perhaps more important than the annual general meeting is the general meeting of club members held at the close of Rallies. All bona fide members are welcome to attend these meetings and express their views. The executive has a duty, under the Constitution, to consider any matters arising from this meeting. It is at this meeting that the President advises the membership the important points and decisions of the Council meeting. Such was the case this year, and indeed the executive was left in no doubt, in a number of areas, which way they were expected to act. The executive welcomes the opportunity to hear from the membership, and hopes such communication will continue in future.

Perhaps one of the most important points to arise out of the General Meeting was the decision of the membership that a Promotional Fund be established. This decision I am pleased to say has been accepted by the Executive and a separate fund for the promotion of Nudism in New Zealand has been established. I commend to members and non-members this fund and I would hope that clubs will have started their collection boxes for this fund, and that regular payments can filter into the Federation. Should any persons who are not club members feel disposed to contribute, their donations will be gratefully received at P.O. Box 1359, Wellington.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

The deluxe Issue is exactly that and if one wants proof of the great strides nudism has made your publication furnishes plenty.

Of particular interest to me too was the account of the open day at the Dunedin "Orchard Sun Club". I was entertained some years ago by members there and was amazed at the extent and hardiness of such splendid nudist facilities.

When I think of our initial efforts at the same city and the uproar it created among the 'Good' people, today's openness and organisation is marvellous. As the first to attempt nudist activities my name was mud among the majority but today our movement is accepted and tolerated from one end of the country to the other.

But, behind all these efforts has gone a great deal of hard, hard, work. Whether here, or at the Orchard, amenities are only provided by steady dedicated toil of the willing workers.

It's gratifying to see what was once denounced as low, and immoral, has come of age and provides so many with the sane enjoyment of sun and congenial company as well as helping toward more balanced and healthful attitudes, not only on nudism, but on sex generally.

Sincerely,
Eric W. Flint.

Dear Sir,

I must thank your correspondent I. Eastern for bringing to your readers' attention the fact that Nudist Youth Club has borne that name from its inception, however, this does not in any way belittle the actions of S.A.N.C. in changing their name from Sun Club to Nudist Club.

I must admit that one is inclined to overlook the N.Y.C. when talking about "Clubs" in general, probably because they are more in the nature of a national body, made up of groups from many clubs. Your regular readers will know, from the content of the magazine during my term as editor, that I fully support the N.Y.C. and my congratulations to S.A.N.C. were certainly not intended as anything but a commendation for their action. They were the first to "change" their name to Nudist Club. This may sound like a technicality, but because they have their own grounds the title "Nudist" club has more significance than that of N.Y.C. who have accommodation on the grounds of their parent clubs. There is a subtle difference which will become evident if you give the subject enough thought.

Regarding Mr Eastern's comment about the Naturist taking four of the seven hours of the meeting referred to, this is an indication of the importance of the magazine as the official journal of the Federation and it is most gratifying to see it in such good hands.

John H. Gilmour.

Dear Con,

First, congratulations on the mag. - anticipating the arrival of the next issue now gives a feeling akin to the pleasure of anticipating the next visit to the club or a free beach!

I find the letter of your correspondent, S. Peech, regarding shaven pubic areas, most interesting indeed. Two or three years ago an attempt at correspondence discussion on this subject was killed almost instantly, making it appear that there are many with strong views against pubic depilation.

Mr Peech and his friends have sensed this hostility on the part of clubs; it does exist, towards male shavers in particular. That being the case, he and his friends may find it worthwhile to think of themselves as a nudist group with a different angle and ask 'Naturist' to help them get in touch with others with similar views - possibly there are a number who would like to shave but who are deterred through sensed opposition. After all, the Free Beach Group have gone from strength to strength through advertising their own view in 'Naturist'. Mr Peech could well find a similar response from hitherto unknown people who share his ideas.

I for one prefer genital shaving because it looks tidy. I find also that I feel more freely naked than those who are so hairy they may as well clad in swim shorts. Why should I, through accident of birth, have to endure a cloud of concealing pubic hair when others with little or no such covering are accepted without question or argument.

I hope those who appreciate genital shaving will let our Editor know their views.

Yours,
Wally Burgess.

[Thanks for your letter, Wally. I have abridge it slightly and, as you requested, have sent the original on to Mr Peech. To the several other correspondents who wrote similar letters, these have also been passed on to Mr Peech - Ed.]

Dear Sir,

I cannot let got by the statements made by 'Eastern Nudist' in your last issue.

For a start, 'Naturist' cannot be excellent if it can be improved. Second, I'm sure that if the Eastern potentate looked at the photo he refers to (on page 28) then turned back to the previous page and read the article there, he would not need a crystal ball to find the solution to his mystery. As for his comments about photos of women outnumbering photos of men, a good start would be for the Eastern star to send a photo of himself; I'm sure a lot of ladies would find him aesthetically appealing even if covered by his Eastern kimono.

On more than one occasion a male has been shown on the front cover or centre fold of 'Naturist'. Previous copies are available at small cost; Eastern Nudist should take off his yashmak and in future make sure of his facts!

Yours,
Wooden Spoon of the North.

Dear Sir,

Congratulations to Peter Fields for his centrefold in Issue 85. Truly worthy of Playboy. The quality of photography is certainly improving but must it really be at the expense of natural, nudist pictures?

The article "What's It Really Like" says that 'Bodies are not what nudism is all about' and 'in the ordinary come and go association at a club, there's no male or female - there's just people'. In our experience this is perfectly true but this very truth is belied by the predominance of young, attractive females with well shaped bodies, who are certainly not representatives of the nudist club population.

This is supposed to be a magazine for, and about, nudist (whether club members or not) but it seems we are fast trying to compete with Playboy - I see the rot has spread as far as the letter page now! Please don't give us the hoary old chestnut about increased sales, if we printed knitting patterns or horse racing tips it would have the same effect, but on a different section of the public. If sales have increased so dramatically since we have been using such 'girly' type pictures why is the survival of the Naturist still dependant on our clubs' compulsory sales? Anyway do we, who regard our way of life, and the human body as natural, really want the type of reader who is simply looking for a cheap thrill.

Another old chestnut used by the editor is that the family groups / children / tubby grandparent types of pictures are not submitted, or are not photographically good enough. WHO CARES so much about picture quality? This is the Naturist magazine we are talking about, not "Good Photography Mag". I suggest that these excuses for not printing are RUBBISH.

Yours,
Angela & Stuart Fawson, A.O.H.C.

Dear Mr Chignell,

It is with regret that this letter bears a very important complaint relating to your December publication of the New Zealand Naturist.

The Committee of the H.B.S.C. have complained about the indecent centrefold of your December issue. We feel that as this is a family magazine and pictures of this nature are quite disgusting for family viewing.

Also the Committee have decided if pictures of this nature are to be displayed in future publications the H.B.S.C. will discontinue their magazine membership.

Here's hoping something can be done about this complaint in order to keep everyone smiling and the sun shining.

Yours faithfully,
Gloria Lee,
[Secretary].

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter because I think we have the best nudist magazine in the world. But we will not have the best magazine if the centre page of the last issue is repeated. That kind of pose only gives the public the wrong impression of the nudist movement.

Our magazine is to promote nudism and not to compete with Playboy and Penthouse.

I realise that photographs are sometimes hard to get for the magazine but surely we should have enough to leave the likes of that out.

The photographer must surely have taken more photographs of the same model in different poses more suitable to our magazine. The photograph on the centre page is terrific if only the model had moved her hand.

Yours sincerely,
J. Hayde.

Dear Editor,

I would like to reply to a letter in Issue 85 of the New Zealand Naturist written by S. Peech.

I feel that the reason for being a nudist is that you do not have to wear clothes. By taking off your clothes this leaves you in your natural state i.e. with pubic hair. If we were not meant to have pubic hair we would not have it.

Therefore I feel that by shaving pubic hair this is not natural and not one of the aims of the nudist movement.

Also why was Issue 85 a 'deluxe issue' as it appears the same as all the others.

Rosemary T.

Sir,

On behalf of the committee of our club I would like to inform you of our strong disapproval of the type of photograph used in the Centrefold of the December magazine Issue No. 85 In our opinion the photograph concerned is more suited to the "girlie" type magazine and not our "New Zealand Naturist".

Yours faithfully,
Howard Rees,
Secretary,
AURORA SUNSEEKERS INC.

Dear Con,

I agree that I think your excellent magazine would be improved with the addition of captions with the pictures. Do be careful with the "crutch shots," they could lower the tone somewhat if they are too obvious.

Could some kind soul help me? Anne and I are going to Europe in May for a few months and we would like to stay at some of the continental clubs and resorts, but I have not been able to obtain a, copy of the INF or any other nudist camping or club guide. I am told the INF guide is out of print, and the new one will be out some time about mid 1978.

Could someone please lend us a more or less up-to-date guide so we can plan that part of the trip? I promise most faithfully to return same within a week or so.

Best Wishes for 1978 to New Zealand Naturist and all connected with its publication.

Dear Con,

In August last year, I spent three weeks in Honolulu.

I visited the "Hawaiian Nudist Park" which is privately owned, and has a membership of 200.

The facilities it offers were minimal, three flush toilets, two outside showers, a good tuck shop, eight baches filled every weekend, no power, no swimming pool, little grass, no trees of any sort. Where they swim in the sea, is approximately 30ft. wide with white sand.

A small club house holds a fridge, table and chairs etc. The fees are $228 a year, and a cost of $10 for us to visit.

They have a code system for making the way to their clubs which did impress me, using red adhesive tape on lamp posts to mark the way. One way of people not getting lost as does quite often occur in N.Z.

My friend is not a nudist and was not impressed with the desolation of the place. It took us 2 hours by bus and a walk of 1-3/10 miles from the gate which is locked and you are given the combination over the phone.

Our clubs in N.Z. compare favourably with their bush settings, friendly club atmosphere and the hard working committees.

Regards,
Gwen. A.S.C.

Dear Sir,

We wonder why it is deemed necessary to hold the Annual Nudist Rally over the Christmas period, and not later on in the holiday period namely the week following the New Year. Over the Christmas period many members are committed to family and employment demands. Personally, we have not yet been able to attend these rallies for the past three years for these very reasons and we are not likely to in the future unless the time is varied. We are not suggesting that it should be a permanent arrangement, but perhaps every third year or so it could be put back to the dates suggested to give us Christmas workers the chance to attend.

We find ourselves completely frustrated, particularly when we get enthusiastic reports from those fortunate people who are able to attend year after year.

Incidentally, we would like to point out that the weather is not always the best over Christmas to New Year as those who were at the Auckland and then Wellington Rallies will confirm.

Yours sincerely,
A.N. Roband,
M.J. Woodbury.

Dear Sir,

Through the columns of your excellent Magazine Marian and I would like to thank everyone at the Rally held at Tolaga Bay who offered and gave their help to us and also to those who enquired about my accident.

Even though I was on crutches and only able to be a spectator I thoroughly enjoyed the Rally and wish to personally thank the Gisborne Club and of course Ian for all the time and work they must have put into it.

Ray Woolhouse,
Secretary, Free Beach Group Inc.

Dear Sir,

The photo on page 22 of your last issue shows a delightful lass being embraced by an elderly gentleman. I feel it would have been a better photo if both parties had been around the same age or are they Father and Daughter.

This photo alone must point out the need for a caption on photos published.

Yours Envious,

Please with hold name for fear of retaliation.

Eat your heart out Envious - Editor.

Dear Sir,

Please find enclosed cheque $14.00 (12 issues as they are available $1.00 also $2.00 as postal assistance).

Excellent nudist magazine - must comment on the relaxed and naturally natural beautiful body of young member (Page 13 issue 82) - how about a repeat in colour (or enlarged B. & W.) centre fold?

Many thanks and Christmas greetings to all staff.

Jim and Judy Warman.

Dear Sir,

For several years now I have noticed that the photographic emphasis of your magazine has been on the female form. Although these are a very attractive and no doubt do help to sell 'Naturist', I have found in talking to people of various ages that a greater proportion of photographs of males would satisfy a greater cross section of readers.

Yours,
Miss Jin.

AUSTRALIAN FREE BEACH NEWS

The furore over nude bathers, on beaches on Queensland's Gold Coast, received worldwide publicity over the December/January period. The facts have been widely disseminated so we won't "Re-hash" them here. We are very grateful to our correspondent from the "Eureka Sun Club" for keeping us fully informed on the matter.

"Tangalooma", a well known, luxury style, tourist resort on Moreton Island near Brisbane is putting out the welcome sign to nude bathers. While "Public Nudity" is not allowed at the resort itself a spokesperson for the management has advised "should people decide to avail themselves of the many isolated beaches around Moreton Island, private sun bathing was assured".

Channel BTQ 7 T.V. in Brisbane recently showed a documentary on free beaches titled "Queensland Exposed". It was shown state wide and was very well produced. It contained a lot of shots from West Australia's Swanbourne Beach however, and used this as a contrast. Most of the Queensland shots were taken at Granite Bay. Incidentally, we understand that there are 600/700 people at Granite Bay on most Sundays.

N.S.W. are to get two new free beaches. They are "Werrong" in the Royal National Park, and "Morna Point" near Stockton, Newcastle. The Premier, Mr Wran said "We will stop there - there will be no more". This looks like ruling out our proposed claim for a beach at Fingal Head which has already been reported in your magazine. Still, four free beaches in N.S.W. is reasonably satisfactory.

The new member for Surfers Paradise, in the Queensland state parliament, Mr Bruce Bishop, promised during his campaign that he would go all out to get a nude beach on the Gold Coast.

We are told that nudists are using Shangri La (Bokarina Beach) again, but usually there are only about 60 or so, in marked contrast to the 700 each weekend last season. The Landsborough Shire Council has frightened a lot of regulars away. Granite Bay now has the crowds.

The Noosa Shire Council is in the midst of controversy over nude bathing, among other things, but is receiving the support of the Queensland free beach movement.

Red Land Shire Council is having its share of controversy also over suggestions of a nude bathing beach on North Stradbroke. The tourist launch "Nude Cruises" from Surfers Paradise to Stradbroke have created a fair amount of publicity and the verbal battles between pro's and anti's continues.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

1978 has already been with us now for three months, and to date what a year.

Firstly it was great to see the terrific number of folk who called in on us before and after the Rally. These people, some who stayed only an hour or two others a day or two, were excellent guests. We thoroughly enjoyed their company, although we have to admit that they were starting to get us a little worried as to how much further our facilities could be stretched, however we managed, and trust that they all had a enjoyable stay with us.

We certainly learnt where the weak points are in the planning of the grounds, and the committee, now familiar with them, are planning to make the necessary improvements.

One thing we would ask is, when visiting another club do ask about that club rules and abide by them, it's rather embarrassing to the host club to have to remind visitors of these.

Our temperamental water supply has been improved now that we've put the "old girl" in mothballs and installed the ram pump. This should save us the worries we've had in the past of not having water when we want it.

Looking further into the year, winter always seems to be a time of social activities for our Club, and this year promises to be no exception. These socials are advertised in our monthly club newsletter. All clubs secretaries receive a copy, so do join us if you are in our area. Of course our biggest Social event of the year will be our Annual Cabaret, why not plan to be with us then, on the 30th September.

Thanks to all the other Clubs for sitting back and letting us win the Mowlen Trophy.

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

For sheer activity The Orchard grounds have fair hummed this summer. An excellent summer, a big influx of keen new members, little work - only maintenance, sports courts and pool working overtime, what more could we ask.

And now apples and pears running out our ears - we don't know what to do with them all!

Interclub visits have been a feature this season, and we feel that some of the South Island clubs are coming out of the doldrums and showing their true colours. An exchange of visits and ideas puts new life into any club, and we feel that if some clubs were not quite so insular in their outlook they would develop in a stronger manner.

However, at The Orchard it's all go for 1978 and should the Rally come South (Please!!) we hope to make our presence felt in no uncertain manner.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB INC.

Another brilliant day was had by all at our second sports day with A.O.H.C., N.S.N.C., K.V.C., N.Y.C., and many visitors from various other clubs around N.Z. We have a certain knack of choosing the right time and inviting the sun along, and our grounds were as beautiful as the day was long. We are looking forward to other Auckland clubs hosting similar events.

Our Wine and Barbeque at Villa Maria in February was enjoyed by all who attended. Our summer calendar has been so full that we hope the sun keeps shining a little longer so we can enjoy a few leisurely beach trips to end off.

AURORA SUNSEEKERS

A few jottings of our past, present and future activities:

During the last year the sauna and swimming nights have proved to be a popular as ever. The sauna nights, held every other Sunday at the Leisure Centre draw large numbers of members who are glad to be able to relax, talk and set themselves up for another working week. Our new sauna season starts on February 5 and carries on throughout the year. At the grounds, things are moving in more ways than one. We have just gained a new lease which will cover us for the next seven years. The new miniten court has been excavated and levelled ready for an autumn sowing of grass and a new concrete block. swimming has been planned with work beginning this year. On the membership side we gained a number of new members to swell our ranks.

From the quality club of the South.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

Our new club house now boasts a new coat of paint, and some of the lower mounds which dotted our grounds have been flattened to accommodate more tent sites. The first weekend in December was an Open Day/Camp In weekend with over one hundred people attending the Open Day on the Sunday. Some of our members attended either the Gisborne or the Canterbury rallies and reported great times at both, while we in our turn were able to play host to quite a number of members from other clubs. We do apologise to those visitors who had such an enthusiastic welcome from the swarming bees. This was, of course, beyond our control, but we felt pretty bad about it.

By the time these notes go to press we will have enjoyed a free beach day and a number of interclub meetings, including Waikato's new pool opening. Our winter activities will include saunas and the possibility of learning how to massage. Should keep us trim and warm until summer comes round again.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

The time to use superlatives, to describe the last three months, is with us again. So to reduce the verbiage, some short summaries.

1. The weather: Sunny and hot, the way we like it. Terrific!

2. N.Z.N.F. Rally: A bold departure from the past and a great success. Fabulous!

3. Christmas Camp at Bay of Plenty Sun Club: Just terrific!

4. S.A.N.C. Sports Day, 15th January: An outstanding success and all credit to the host club. Wow!

5. Member attendance at our grounds: Disappointing!

6. The year ahead: Final mortgage payment on our land due 1st August 1978, then we are freehold. At last!

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Our Christmas festivities got off to a great start with the children's party, held in blazing sunshine at the Club grounds Father Christmas arrived suitably disguised in the back of a bright red truck and dispensed presents, balloons and lollies to about 40 children. Afterwards there was a feast of jelly and fruit salad, cakes and drink. A few very large children were seen to indulge!

The adults' party was also a great success. Some intrepid members even took a dip despite the rather arctic temperature.

Our pool was in operation in time for the summer. Each weekend - the only time the plasterer was available - down came the rain and we really wondered if the summer would be over and still no pool, then bang! fine weather and it all happened in a flash.

The official opening was to be on our visitors' weekend, 25th-26th February, but we have been splashing since Christmas.

14 families made it to the Rally this year and, as usual, a great time was had by all. The organisation was really impressive and the hot showers were marvellous!

By the time this item is printed we will have held our annual Open Day. A hangi was to be put down and, hopefully with a good crowd, quite a few people would be introduced to the pleasures of nudity.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

The news of the G.S.C. this time is of course that we hosted the N.Z.N.F. Rally this year. It was not held on the Club grounds but on a member's farm property at Tolaga Bay. If the Editor will allow, we would like to take this opportunity to say "Thank you" to all those many members of clubs from all over New Zealand (and Australia) who helped and worked so hard to make the rally so successful. Without them, we know for sure it could not have run as smoothly as it did.

Things will be quiet for a while at Mecca, but after the weary workers have soaked up some sun, plans will be under way for the cabaret in July. Publicity achieved locally from the rally may mean even more ticket sales than usual!

One major job for the year is the construction of a miniten court. Enthusiasm is running high amongst the newer members after playing it and seeing it played at the rally.

The trampoline purchased for the rally is being moved back to Mecca for the children's area and will prove an added attraction for the young ones out there.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB [INC.]

Winter activities for us were probably like so many other of our fellow clubs : fencing, planting, grass mowing and all the other chores but with the exciting addition of another twelve caravan points, giving now a total of thirty two sites with electricity laid on. Our temporary club house still does sterling service, so with that, our new caravan sites, and the completion of our new kitchen unit, we're more than ready to welcome any happy wanderers from north, south, and all points between.

We held a very successful Open Weekend in late November; attracted a large number of visitors including a team of local sky-divers who free-fell from 7,000 feet clad only in boots and parachutes. We're pretty sure we've established a world first for skinny-diving!

Happy sun clubbing. Do drop in and see us, even if you don't do it from 7,000 feet wearing only your boots!

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB [INC.]

Oranui's summer has arrived. (Mecca, please note!) This year, for some reason or other, we've had an exceptionally large number of visitors from other clubs, from Northern Sunseekers, South Auckland, Rotorua, Taranaki, Waikato, Mecca, Wellington, most of them staying for a few days or more, and all very welcome. Particularly welcome were Iris and George from Leicester Sun Club, England, and Doreen and Dennis of England's Diogenes Club.

Those of our members who travelled to the Rally - there were more than forty of us, as if other Rally-ers didn't know - were enthusiastic about the new scene. Our thanks, Mecca, for really turning it on, and congratulations for the way it all went.

By the time these notes appear in print the best part of summer will be over but as I write, it does show signs of being a good one. If summer is still with us when you read this and if you're having very late holidays, do call in and see us at Oranui; our grounds are delightful and our welcome is genuine.

FREE BEACHES REPORT   - By Emiel Roland.

1977 has gone, without giving us what we hoped for and indeed expected - official recognition of the fact that free beaches do exist and are used by thousands of people. We were out of luck. The Police Offences Act did not come up before Parliament for amendment, and applications to the Auckland Regional Authority met heavy opposition from conservative members, yet the number of people using free beaches is ever growing. I receive reports from many people who use such beaches around Auckland, and evidence is that several hundred people each weekend make use of these unofficial free beaches.

At Palm Beach on Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, the local Council tried to regularise its use as a free beach by putting up notices telling people about the use of part of the beach by nudists. These notices were primarily intended to protect the feelings of non-nudists by giving them notice of an accomplished fact - that this part of the beach was used as a free beach. Unfortunately the Council was forced to give in to the hysterical protests of some members of the public and the notices were removed. Apparently the anti-nudists would prefer to bury their heads in that same sand.

The Australian front has been much more successful with eight official, three unofficial free beaches now being well used. This legalisation has not come from Government initiative or foresight, but from official recognition of the fact that these were already being used as free beaches. A realistic approach - other politicians, please note, and learn!

Back on the New Zealand scene, what about our free beach future?

There is no doubt that official free beaches will come here, if only our politicians would face reality. It will probably do no harm to repeat, for their benefit, our request - simply add a paragraph to the Indecent Exposure Clause, making it permissible for local bodies to declare a beach or part thereof, a free beach. The remainder of this clause, about indecent behaviour, etc, would stay as is.

That's all; it's as simple as that. Then it would be in the hands of local bodies to act if they so wished. After a beach had been declared 'free', then the area would signposted accordingly, with the public notified that nudity may be encountered in that area. I must make it clear at this point that it is not intended to have any part of a beach reserved exclusively for nudists; the beach will still be there for all to use, but the nudist will be free of harassment or fears of prosecution.

I do thank all those people who encourage us in our efforts to have free beaches legalised, and particularly do I thank George Cook of A.C.T., Australia for his report 'The Free Beach Challenge', from which I gained information about the Australian situation.

Footnote, extract from the International Naturist Federation Press Bulletin of December, 1977 - "At the present moment, negotiations are in progress which, it is hoped, will result in the establishment of the first 'official' Naturist beach in Britain. The Council (CCBN - Central Council of British Nudism) are in favour of the scheme and it only requires the settling of a few points of law before it becomes a reality. CCBN is sure that once the first one becomes established, then others will follow suit. The negotiations are between the Kent & South Eastern Region of the CCBN, the local authority at Hastings on the South Coast, and the appropriate Government Department. An attempt is also being made to secure the use of a beach on the North West coast, but this is in the early stages as yet."

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

SUNSEEKERS INC.

Our club was very proud to be the host club for the 9th Australian Nudist Federation Convention/ Sports Rally held from 28th December, 1977 to 6th January, 1978. This 'get together' was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. Much hard work went into preparation, and work on all projects that had already been commenced was speeded up, resulting in a second toilet block, tennis court and split level brick clubhouse being completed by the members in time for Convention.

As the nearest Naturist club to Sunseekers is some 2700 kilometres away, the attendance figure of over 200 visitors from other clubs was encouraging. Fortunately the temperature was not too high on the days on which sports were played, and this year the trophies were shared between 5 clubs, Sunseekers taking off the senior and junior swimming, batinton, badminton and Club of the Year trophies.

A few finishing touches still need to be made to the Club grounds and facilities, but with the temperature rising above 40 degrees C during the last few days, these may have to wait a while.

EUREKA SUN CLUB

Eureka's Swim Nights at a city pool are still proving to be one of the best regular "get togethers" for nudists in Southern Queensland, whether from recognised clubs or otherwise. The hot tropical nights have enticed bathers by the score, and one of the most pleasing aspects of the function is the excellent behaviour of guests and their willing cooperation to make the project a roaring success.

Our screening problem was overcome in the immediate future by the tremendous effort of a week end working bee and barbecue. Hundreds of sheets of galvanised iron were donated, and these were erected on steel star pickets and between trees to screen our northern side. A camouflage job with green, brown and grey paint still remains.

People from the "Down to Earth Movement" have shown an interest in our club and activities of recent months, and their movies of the "Confest 76" festival in Canberra were shown at the grounds recently. A start has been made with interclub event arrangements for 1978, and tentative dates are as follows: 2nd April Sun Leisure Club, 11th June - Good Companions' (Miniten Doubles), 27th August - Sunshine Families' (Volley Ball), 1st October - Eureka, 12th November Three Bears'. We maw see the participation of "Valley of Eden" club for the first.time in the events.

During the election campaign in Queensland, free beaches got quite a mention, and with candidates from all parties voicing an opinion, the situation is that there is no chance of a free legal beach being declared in this state now that the coalition government has been returned, If Labor had been returned, the parliamentary leader said on T.V. that the matter would be put to a free vote, as are other "social issues" of this type.

The Three Bear's Sun & Health Club

At time of writing this beginning of January our delegates who attended the 9th A.N.F. Convention have not arrived back home, but we have been told that the Three Bears have been chosen to hold the 10th A.N.F. convention and rally on their grounds this we are most happy to have and we will be doing our utmost to make all who attend feel the effort to come here to Sunny Queensland was well worth it.

At the present the courts are being worked on and should all be looking well in the next couple of months, a large marquee is being hired as a club room and, any one thinking of coming it would be appreciated if you can book early so as to make it a little easier to work out the amount of area we will require for camping.

We will advise all clubs as soon as we have more information with regards to this great event. Anyone who requires more details about the Three Bears should be able to get it from their club secretary, or write to us.

"BORDER RIVER NUDIST FARM"

Nestling among the tall gum trees behind a screen of weeping willows by the banks of the Murray river is the little known nudist retreat of "Border River." One day at our club (Helios) Anne and I read a letter on the notice board inviting nudists to stay at the Border River farm house. We wrote to Rob and arranged to call in for a couple of days on our way from Red Cliffs (near Mildura) to "River Valley" at Echuca.

We arrived at night and parked our little caravan in the grounds. Next morning when we explored the place we were enchanted. "Border River" is an old farm (in the Murrabit Irrigation Area).

Rob a keen nudist, and his brother and sister, farm the property next to Border River, and have lived in the area most of their lives. They bought this property to provide a country holiday retreat for those nudists, couples, families, or groups, who want a quiet rural break from the city life.

Anne and I returned a couple of times with the caravan, but found the house to be so clean and comfortable that we leave the van at home now.

Last summer a Swiss lass and her two children came to Australia and visited us. Among the places we took them was Border River. They loved it. It was their first taste of naked living; though limited for time they insisted on spending a second spell there before returning home to Switzerland. Whilst there, they saw cows being milked, helped feed the pigs, baby calves, gathered eggs, swam in the river, caught carp, and romped in the sun under the sprinkler.

Every one who has stayed at Border River has fallen under the spell of its old world garden, and the quiet charm, with the birds, insects, distant cattle, and the winds in the trees providing the only sounds.

Any one interested in visiting the farm should contact "Border River", Private Bag 75, Kerang 3579, Victoria, Australia.

The following song summed up the general feelings of those who attended the rally at Tolaga Bay. It was the final act at the rally concert.

Bless 'em all, Bless 'em all

Our Jennifer, Ian and all

Bless all the people from Tolaga Bay

They have been bringing our food out each day

And Jan has been helpful to all

We know in our hearts we'll recall

This new type of rally, so carefree and pally

Our heartiest thanks to you all.

Bless 'em all, Bless 'em all

Pete, Jenny, Graham and all

Bless all the helpers for giving us fun

Bless Gisborne County for bringing the sun

As back to our home club we crawl

With sunburn some trophies and all

From this best of rallies, up here in the valleys

So come on you lot, cheer 'em all.
