THE BUILDING OF A CLUB

From humble beginnings in 1970 at a spot on the river bed in the Pohangina Valley, the Palmerston North Sun Club has come a long way. After a great deal of searching and negotiating the Club finally obtained their present grounds on what was a rundown farmlet on sandy country covered in lupin.

Since that time many hours of work have been put into clearing the lupin and levelling the pr'operty, endeavouring to get a grass cover over the areabefore sand and seed was blown away, also a great deal of work was put into planting of windbreaks around the grounds, with problems in getting the right type of shelter that would establish itself in the sandy country.

In the earlier years the old farmhouse proved a boom to the activities of the Club, serving its purpose as a Clubhouse well, till it was burnt to the ground. Quickly members rallied around and converted the old rundown cowshed into a reasonably comfortable Clubhouse complete with kitchen facilities - this is still used to this day.

Members very early in the life of the Club saw the need for a swimming pool. The Mark I and Mark II polythene lined models saw many amusing incidents, like almost having to shovel the tadpoles out before having a swim, but thanks to many hours of hard work over a period of 12 working weekends, the Club now has a magnificent swimming area, comprising of a paddling pool, a childrens pool and a large 20 x 10 metre swimming pool which serves the members well.

Over succeeding years the members have worked continuously clearing further areas for games courts, a nine hole puffing course has been established, a concrete miniten court laid and further areas have been worked on to beautify the property, a further area has been purchased which is still to be developed.

The Club itself is very much orientated towards the Camping and Caraving aspect of Nudist life with over 36 caravan power points where the members are able to rent a site, leaving their caravan there and using it the full year around, recently three batches have been built by members, modern toilet facilities have been built which have recently been upgraded with coin-in-slot showers.

Throughout the life of the Club the members have continuously planned and worked with the aim of providing an atmosphere and facilities for the whole family, where they can get away from the hustle of town life, where they can enjoy living as only one can, at a club where the wearing of clothes is of ones own choice. As a club much is yet to be done, but the present members are now enjoying the fruits of the labours of those who have paved the way.

This year the Palmerston North Sun Club will be hosting the National Rally, another milestone. But whether you join us then or at any other time, we know that those who have worked towards providing these facilities for all to enjoy will get great pleasure in knowing that they have provided another Oasis for Nudists in New Zealand.

What goes on in these Nudist Clubs?

By: Ray H

I am writing to you - yes you reading this magazine rather shame-facedly in a bookshop, from under your pillow, or reading it between the pages of another magazine. I expect that you are having a very good look at the photographs and ignoring most of the printed matter, and all of the club notes. Don't be ashamed to admit that you are reading such a magazine, put out by our national organisation which is called New Zealand Nudist Federation.

Most of the clubs are tucked away in a rural setting all over the country and it is far from easy to take a peek through their fences in hope to see some naked people.

Now come inside the gate my friend. There are nude people all over the place and judging by the noise coming from the swimming pool there is some sort of orgy going on. Also over there in that corner of the grounds is the erotic department, where all those photos for mens magazines are taken, its wicked by thrilling don't you think.

Well if you believe that nonsense you are a mug, and don't deserve to become a nudist, also no club will have you if that is the type of scene you want to intrude into.

Fact is that club members are ordinary people, just like you would meet outside a church, golf, rugby, netball, tennis, youth club, even the senior citizens get togethers - anywhere there are people. Only difference is that these sun club folk take their clothes off together, at the right place, at the right time, without feeling embarrassed or ashamed and without having to keep an eye out so they don't embarass other people. All of those folk believe that being nude allows their skin to breath, and improve their health, as well as giving an all over tan.

Families are everywhere and the young children are running about the place thoroughly enjoying themselves. The screams coming from the swimming pool are merely exuberent horseplay.

Nudists don't just lie around the grounds in the sun all the time, most play a bit of sport - yes, most clubs have sports courts for volleyball, miniten, badminton etc.

Now that I have disappointed you about there not being an orgy in sight, as you thought went on in these such clubs. You must throw off those notions about the naked human body, if you want to become a naturist too, which we like to be called - but we have to put up with the name nudist.

Whatever purists may try and tell you it still has nothing to do with sex - of course we realise that men and women of the sun club are naked to each others gaze, but the nude human body is familiar to them and perfectly natural. They can look at each other in passing without any sensation of sex. You will take it as a matter of course after you have been in the movement a very short time, and you are never really happy on a nice warm day until you are stripped off at the club.

After making application to the secretary of the club nearest to you - yes there are always vacancies for couples and single women, with the odd vacancy for single men. The secretary is sure to want to meet you to have a chat (clothed of course).

After all the preliminaries have taken place you are now ready for your first visit.

Everybody will make it easy for you, as they have been through it themselves and don't expect you to undress right away, but it is more sensible to get rid of those clothes from the start (if the weather is warm) once those inevitable introductions are over.

In no time at all you will have forgotten that you haven't a stitch on and that you are talking or playing sport with nude members of the opposite sex, without any thoughts about sex. When the sun starts to sink low in the sky and it is time to get dressed to go home, your clothes will feel very heavy on your body, and your skin will be tingling from that touch of sunburn - never mind there's that next visit to look forward to.

That's naturism my friend. Good, clean and healthy living. So think it over and write to or ring the secretary of the club that is nearest to you.

Welcome to the naturist movement.

AN INVITATION

There are a large number of people in N.Z. males, females, mums and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, or families as a whole who do consider that there is nothing wrong with social nudism, but for one reason or another do riot or cannot join a recognised Sun/Nudist Club. They would, should there be an opportunity support the movement without the necessity of having to join a Club.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has now introduced into its organisation a "Supporter" member group, and you are very cordially invited to join this group.

For a small annual subscription any family or individual can become a supporter member, thus indicated in a tangible way support for the movement, and in return getting proper and official information on 'what it's all about'.

Like any properly run organisation there will be some rules, and these are set out on the application form. Simply they will be:

(a) Age 18 or over

(b) Not a member of a Club (Free Beach Group excepted - if you join a club at a later date your membership automatically lapses.)

(c) Payment of an annual subscription.

And what will you receive in turn?

Initially you will receive a receipt for your money, together with an official NZNF sticker suitable for car window or bumper; a 'Bare With Us' sticker, a year's subscription to the N.Z. 'NATURIST' and most importantly an INF/NZNF Membership Card endorsed "SUPPORTER", which will open the door to many Sun Clubs throughout the world including some N.Z. ones, and concession rates at these clubs. In due course a supporters Bulletin will be issued containing many interesting items and up-to-date information for the member on what's happening in Nudism, and associated matters of interest.

ALL applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Well now that you know something of the scheme you may like to join us.

The annual subscription has been set at $10 plus a $2 application fee per unit: i.e. individual or family.

A stamped addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1359, Wellington will get you an application form.

Nudist Youth Club - Rally

Monday 3rd January

After hectic organisation we finally left Auckland Outdoor Health Club about 11am for the journey up to North Shore Nudist Club for the N.Y.C. rally.

The day was hot and excellent for our arrival, for the club was having an open day with spit roast lambs for lunch, an excellent feed. Finally with the screeds of people leaving, we were able to get the vans up to the camp site and get tents up and everything organised, a quick tea and the official opening of our rally.

Then a quite sit around, talking for awhile.

Tuesday 4th January

After a good nights sleep we all arose feeling lumps in backs and feeling a little grubby from not having had a shower. During breakfast we all decided to go roller skating down at Glenfield. Squeezing everyone into the vans and trooping off only to find on arrival someone had forgotten their socks. Never mind, all seemed to have a fantastic time with a few receiving some scraps and bruises.

Then it was back up to the Club for a fantastic and well needed swim with everyone getting stuck into the festivities and just plain glad to get a chance to cool down.

Having had no lunch except ice creams everyone had growling tummies by the time tea finally hit the table, so everyone dived in and stuffed themselves with some home-made chinese food. After tea we sat down to a quite game of charades, with a few testing their wits at chess and strength at arm wrestling.

Wednesday 5th January

The day started off with rain and sullen faces sithng around looking miserable, finally Alan (sleepy) dragged out of bed and to a plunge in the pool, brrr, yelling for everyone to come in too and getting no reaction bar abuse, but by 1pm the sun poked its head out from behind the clouds and things started happening again. Looking for a bit of fun and feeling coazy we decided to build a pyramid on the lawn and with yells and screams, cries of encouragement and a good deal of stomping, shoving and falling over, we finally succeeded. Next the frisbys and a few sore heads from those people not watching. With sweaty bodies all starting to smell a bit we raced down to the motor camp for a shower, bliss. Some being tite wads and making the most of being Nudists showered in rotation gethng two or three people showered for only one ten cent coin. (last of the big spenders). Then after some more mucking about we decideç. tonight would be a good night for the hot pools, "Waiwera here we come". Onwards, upwards and downwards, SPLASH in a heap on the hydra slides with some people going in for two or three sessions.

On the way back Leone decided he couldn't wait till he got back to the Club to eat so he stopped off and bought a hamburger and some toasted sandwiches. After eating the hamburger he reached for a toasted munchie, only to find the load of smurfs he had in the back of the van had eaten them.

Thursday 6th January

Good start to the day with screeds of pancakes and golden syrup. Unfortunately we lost some of the team who had to catch up to parents to get back to Christchurch. But the rest of us carried on m good fashion making an outing up to Warkworth to a place the locals call "The Kilns". This place is actually an old cement mill or something with lots of ruins for climbing on, and one of the best swimming holes I've ever come across. Definitely a must for a future N.Y.C. day trip.

Finally back to camp, another chinese meal, or was it, everything was going into it but it still turned out scrumptous, finishing that off with a big plate of rice pudding to everyones delight. But by then we were all plenty full so we just sat around quietly nursing our bellys with no one wanting to move for a while.

Friday 6th January

A nice early start to the day and trying to finish off most of the food we had left with the best dish going, bacon and eggs with fried tomatoes. Finally after a massive clean up and a quick whip around for a donation for water, we left feeling we had the best time in ages with everyone looking forward to and planning the next N.Y.C. rally.

We officially finished the rally with a meeting and a short word from N.Y.C. Vice-President about 1pm, then into the vans for the last time to transport people to homes or to pick-up places.

Here are a couple of poems that were written at the N.Y.C. Rally

The grounds are nice,

And the weather was warm.

But rare is a place,

The sandf lies don't swarm.

The grass was green,

The sky was blue.

All very nice,

But you can't flush the loo.

ILOT M'BA

(A vacation without peer)

On Tuesday the 29th March, 1983, eight members of Free Beach Group assembled at Auckland Airport. We were bound for Noumea in pursuit of a dream. The Group being loosely organized with members throughout the country, none of us knew each other. We were all nervous, unsure of just what we had let ourselves in for.

We had all heard and read much about hot M'Ba yet were still dubious. Could we survive six days stuck together on a small island?

In the end Ilot M'Ba exceeded anything we could ever imagine. How and why is hard to pinpoint. The complex is the home ground of local Naturist Club but is run on a commercial basis, more similar to some American complexes than the usual New Zealand club. Facilities which were fairly accurately described in 'Naturist' issue No. 102 (Sept '82) are basic but adequate.

Ilot M'Ba is a jewel of many facets. Brilliant sun, endless white sand, superbly clear water, coral reefs, shady trees, excellent fishing, friendly people and magnificent food (never have so few been so well fed). These things are describable, definable, but there is something more about M'Ba that is not.

Being good Kiwi tourists we recorded all above on film, most of which was developed in Noumea. On return we were all disappointed. The photographs were good but were not of the M'Ba we had known. The true M'Ba can be recorded only in the memory.

I'll be honest. My sun-glasses on the boat back to Noumea hid my tears. The boat, a 49 foot former N.Z. pilot launch still carries its New Zealand name, 'Hoki Mai' and no boat was ever more aptly named.

M'Ba is removed from the world we know. It is as though it was of another dimension. (though certainly not fourth - the only time on M'Ba is meal time). I have searched my Thesarus for one word to describe it and failed. Ilot M'Ba is new and unique, and only one word can describe it is itself, 'MBa'. To those privileged few who have been there and know its meaning, greetings and happy returns; to those who haven't and therefore don't all I can say is get in line.

Nude Rafting on the Salmon River

By Marty Brittan

For the last 20 years or so rafting has been a mania on some American rivers, and a thriving commercial venture on a few. Among the rafters are smaller numbers of canoers, kayakers, and people in river dories. The rivers vary from placid pussycats like the lower American, which flows through the city of Sacramento, California, where thousands of people bob downstream on inner tubes or small rafts on a Sunday afternoon drinking soft drinks or beer, to famous white water rivers like the Salmon or the Colorado.

The Salmon River of Idaho is a wonderful rafting river which flows through a mountain wilderness for much of its length. The magnificent Middle Fork is usually floated from Boundary Creek, below impassable Dagger Falls, to Corn Creek, just below its junction with the main Salmon. Middle Fork tours usually head up in the towns of Stanley or Salmon. Tours on the equally magnificent main Salmon typically assemble at Salmon or North Fork and go in at Cabin Creek, at roads end just below Corn Creek, and end 75 miles downstream with a 4-hour jet boat ride back. Trips on both rivers usually run 4 to 6 days. The Middle Fork is cold and crystal-clear, with foaming, plunging rapids, and is enlivened by six wilderness hot springs. While the main Salmon has only two hot springs, it as warmer, more swimmable water, bigger beaches and more open rapids with big "Haystacks" or standing waves. The Middle Fork has 23 named rapids, the main Salmon a mere 19. Both have miles and miles of deep placid water where one can lie back and soak up the brilliant mountain sunshine.

While rafters have been skinny-dipping for years, the first organized clothing-optional trip I know anything about was three years ago on the Middle Fork. Another Middle Fork trip was run the next summer, and last year the main Salmon was floated. The oarsmen (and sometimes oarswomen) guides not only row but set up camp and do all of the great outdoor cookery (as well as often joining in the skinny-dipping). The U.S. Forest Service controls the number of rafts on the river and assigns campgrounds, assuring privacy in camp.

Last year was such a success that over half of the tour members intend to go again this year. Anyone interested in clothing- optional rafting on the Salmon River should write Riversun, 1820 Venus Drive, Sacramento, California. 95825, or Naturist Travel, P.O. Box 132, Oshkosh, Wisconsin 54902.

"I Sometimes Wonder"

I sometimes wonder as I gaze at the seemingly endless arrays of health foods in the increasingly common health stores, or watch the greater and greater numbers of joggers who are whisking energetically about town at this time of year, or the cyclists pedalling about fiercely in droves, how it is that "healthiness" has become so much more fashionable in the last ten years. Beginning with the "back to nature" movements of the late 60's and early 70's and the increasing popularity of vegetarian (or low-sugar, or low-salt) diets, the emphasis on physical exercise and the resulting trends in "sporty" style clothes, it has got to the stage where the average bloke or girl going for a stroll on the beach or catching the bus to work feels downright lazy and where ones social status is determined by one's "K's per week" rating (that is kilometres, not kilograms).

Of course, huge numbers of people have benefited enormously by more careful dieting, the conscious achievement of a certain level of physical fitness, and a more active lifestyle, but sometimes I wonder whether all that gain would be lost if the next fad turned out to be home computers or chess.

There have been times when I have wondered why these body conscious, fitness crazy people who have popped up all around us haven't automatically thought of the most natural and beneficial lifestyle of all, that of nudism, and flooded out to clubs on their bikes and running shoes. It's true some clubs have had a good season for new members this year and that's wonderful, but many naturist clubs are in fact having problems meeting their membership levels. The popularity of the "clothing optional" camps should have been reflected, one would have thought, in a rocketing membership rate for sun clubs, but this is not really so.

Perhaps it all boils down to what we have known all along, namely that becoming a nudist has involved for most of us a conscious decision carefully made in reflection of our belief that naturism is natural, healthy, good for us, good for our children and a valid way of life regardless of the attitudes of most of the people around us.

We all look forward to a time when nudism is more freely accepted and when unenlighted and narrowminded attitudes give way to reason and objectivity, but undoubltedly that process would not be promoted in the long run if nudism suddenly became the "in" thing. Slow and steady progress will be a lot more positive in the end. That's why our Clubs with their solid achievements and steady improvements are the kind of organisations which will most effectively promote true health, both physically and mentally, in this fine old country of ours.

Bargains in the Buff

Stuck at home? All dressed up and nowhere to go? Or is your problem that you can't go anywhere because you've nothing to wear? No matter - if you are looking for inexpensive recreation, economical travel facilities or just good company, joining a nudist club could be just the thing for you and the family.

No, you don't have to take your togs off, and nobody is going to care about your wrinkles, scars (or even - if you are one of the lucky few your elegantly voluptuous figure) when you do.

Says David Palmer, P. R. O. for the N. Z. Nudist Federation, "We keep things simple. There are no pressures. Maybe that's why nudist club facilities are so inexpensive when compared to other types of recreation. Folk just want to relax. No one is trying to make a buck."

As a recent programme on the N. Z. National Programme ponted out (Adventure Holidays in New Zealand, Jan. 9., at 10.05 a.m.), many nudist camps provide overnight camping or cabin facilities for as little as $2 to $4 per night, and there's never a charge for children.

Value for money? "Where else could you get the use of a hot tub for 50c, year-round free use of clubhouse, kitchen and barbeque facilities, and free access to well-maintained game courts and a large swimming pooi f or only a $40-per-year family membership fee?" asks Gordon McShean, President of the Manawatu Sunseekers Club in Palmerston North.

Facilities and fees for camping, spa pools and saunas may differ from club to club - as may membership fees - but most people will agree they are still a bargain. Club membership also brings the privilege of carrying the International Naturist Federation "Passport" which gives access to clubs all over N.Z. and Australia - as well as glamourous resorts in Europe and America (where fees may be a bit higher).

"Add to that the fact that you save money on clothing and laundry - and you may exerience improved health and save on medical bills," says Palmer, "and you can't beat it."

New Zealand's fickle weather is no reason to give up the thought of nudism either, we are assured. Most clubs have social activities (often including the kids) right through winter.

"We even rent halls for our winter socials when visitors from other clubs might swamp our clubhouse facilities," says McShean, whose club recently won the national trophy for increased membership. "When it is chilly we keep our clothes on, of course. We aren't fanatics about getting them off - as others are about keeping them on!" He pauses, thoughtfully. "Maybe nudist facilities are so cheap because no one expects anyone else to have pockets - thus no spare change?" he asks.

"What do you do with your money?" he replies, grinning. And sure enough, we see he's wearing the 'regulation' nudist hat - with pockets in it!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Book Review:

Nudism in
Australia

Book: Nudism in Australia

What is it that gives Australian Nudism its special flavour? Is it the climate, the wide open spaces or the traditions of its British and German pioneers? According to Magnus Clarke's masterly "Nudism in Australia" (Deaking University Press, $AZ 19.95), it is its tribal character, echoing the life of the Aborigines, however unconsciously. The club becomes an extended family, self- protective, and never more so than when cheering its team to victory.

Dr Clarke is a careful observer, and a more detailed account of the movement would be hard to find. He traces its past history, its sociology, its customs. Attitudes have changed over the years, both in the clubs and outside. It was only twenty years ago that the Brisbane police commissioner threatened to get a club owner's child put into care, as being in moral danger. Could we conceIve of that happening today, when nudity is becoming more and more the sensible and accepted way of enjoying the sun and the sea?

The advance of Australian Nudism has not been without trauma. It has had its share of the paranoid and litigious leaders that have bedevilled naturism in more than one country. The old Australian Federation of Sun Clubs was wound up, at least partly because its title and badge had been copyrighted by one of its members, who refused to allow them to be used when they no longer wanted to play according to his rules. There were other scandals, but the movement survived. The Australian Nudist Federation was born, discarding the work "naturist" in 1975, largely, I feel because it had philosophical implications foreign to those whose creed was just to "get your gear off".

There are a few minor slips, particularly in the production. Two of the well-chosen colour pictures have the captions switched and there is a blank half page, mysteriously labelled "deletion". Nevertheless, my sole and very personal regret is that nobody, as yet, has produced a book on the New Zealand movement which is even half as authorative and widely-ranging. Expensive it may be, as a paperback, but definitely a book worth reading.

Dear Sir,

Since my early childhood I have been going with my parents to a beautiful nudist club that caters for families.

My problem is that I have met a very nice man who has proposed marriage, but he refuses to join me in going to the nudist club. I love him very much, as he has many fine qualities. However, I don't think I could live without those wonderful outings in the sun at the club. I would feel deprived, imprisoned and depressed.

He insists that he is too inhibited to feel comfortable in the presence of unclothed strangers. He's also afraid it might be sexually stimulating.

I want to marry this man, but I need to convince him to join the camp. Can you help me?

Helen P.

If you persuade him to visit the club just once, he may realize that it's a healthy family experience, and there is nothing sexy about it. If he really wants to marry you, he may decide to grin and bare it.

Dear Naturist Friends,

From the visit of your President, Peter James, to our country on 14th July, 1982, a lot of work has been finalised.

Regarding the fittings, we have achieved the setting up of 8 bungalows, the fixtures of a bar and a kitchenette, all this completing the previous fittings. In the near future, we will be able to use the 220V power.

In the meantime, we have contacted a lot of Travel Agencies interested in the promoting of naturism and also be in touch with naturist friends visiting Noumea.

So we would be happy to welcome other friends and to expand these hearty visits in view to set up durable and strong bonds with this great naturist family in the South Pacific.

Attached you will find some photos to be published in your magazine and I hope they will incite people to come to our M'Ba Island.

See you soon.          For C. Plancade
Executive Secretary
V. Clero.

Dear Sir,

In an article in your last issue the writer seems rather coy about giving names to two "Proprietry Complexes". So let's be clear that in the first part of the letter she is referring to Mapua Leisure Park and in the second part to Gisborne Health Club.

Every club has the right to become whatever the members wish. If the aim is to acquire a large membership and an even larger bank balance, then good luck to them. However I suggest this will be achieved at some cost. This will be in the form of Community atmosphere and the sense of fulfillment in creating a refuge removed from rampant commercialism.

As an ex-member of a proprietry club, I can assure your readers that such a regime can be very inhibiting.

Commercial, clothes optional clubs are the antithesis of what nudist clubs were formed for. If this is the trend, if it is progress, that does not make it right or desirable. History will show that minority viewpoints have proved right more .of ten than otherwise.

The real question of why proprietry clubs require full membership has been evaded. I may be ignorant as the writer suggests but am not yet bereft of reason.

How can Jennifer claim that the Federation is self destructive when the pressure to change the Constitution came from outside?

I see no great danger in having proprietry clubs within the Federation, however to beguile other clubs into doing likewise is totally wrong.

In the last twelve months we at Canterbury have spent a great deal of money increasing club facilities, further improvements are planned this year. Our membership has increased by sixty this season. The financial position has never been better.

Next year C.S.C. will celebrate it's thirtieth anniversary. To turn the Club into a clothes optional circus would make some of our founder members turn in their see through shrouds.

Norm Wilkinson

Dear Sir,

We would like to correspond with naturists in other countries as penfriends, to exchange ideas and learn about their ways and country. I am 43, my wife is 36 and our hobbies are dancing, travelling, photography, collecting miniature whiskies, swimming and, of course, sunbathing.

We hope you might be able to publish this letter in your Naturist Journal and look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested.

Well Done Waikato

The sport and Recreation Field-days were held last year on November 13th arid 14th and the Waikato Outdoor Society intended going again for the third year running. The time between decision and event passed so quickly that we were almost left standing but some industrious effort on the part of some of our members got us to the display date without mishap.

We went with the publicity and education of the public on our minds and if new members were to come out of it as part of the exercise, then that would really be one up for us. So many people still have strange ideas about what a nudist club is about that it came as some surprise to have so little adverse comment. Each year there has been one outstanding objection and this year was no different and again the person was male. Perhaps here we may find some significance in this fact. I wonder what it is.

Our display consisted of a map showing approximate locations of the clubs throughout New Zealand and a little of the publications available in New Zealand. Along with those, of course, were the Pictorial Displays of our activities, grounds and achievements which are numerous to behold. There were a few photos from other clubs, which proved to be of great interest. We also organised a video film and slides, thus everything making a sizeable display which looked really good. There were brochures aplenty for distribution, by the many club members who manned the display. People flocked into the tents, to the point where there were people backed up out into the roadway. This so upset another stall holder that he gave up his own display for awhile to come and see what it was all about. He was suitably impressed.

Both days over the weekend were very busy and Sunday produced some interesting happenings. We were given an invitation for one of our number to go to the Field-days luncheon, which we accepted and away he went, with our blessing. Some time later he turned up again, a little under the weather and full of the good things in life! He had enough energy to tell us that there had been nothing but compliments and congratulations for our display. He then sat in a corner and went to sleep!

Four o'clock was the time scheduled for the presentation of awards for the displays and representatives from all displays were to be there. We were part of the club displays and there were also commercial displays. The commercial awards were presented and then the club awards. We had won! We won the club static display award. It is a gold banner with the field-days emblem on it. Recognition at last! We were later told the decision had been a unanimous one by all five judges and we had been in competition with approximately fifty other clubs.

THE NETWORK GROWS

By: Veal Johnson

Some months ago we wrote you about a NETWORK of NATURISTS forming to promote worldwide communication between naturists through correspondence. Well we're back again to report that THE NETWORK is growing larger every day. We have naturists/nudists in 12 coutries communicating up a storm. From the folks "down under" in Australia to the folks in "Windmill Country" (Holland) we have lots of families who want to communicate with nudists all over the world. Most of the people who joined THE NETWORK write to me that they are happy with the repsonse they have received to their letters to other naturists.

It is very easy to join our motley group of "proxy" world travellers. Just send a SASE with a request to join THE NETWORK to: Veal and Leanna Johnson, 14029 Pine Lane, Humble, TX. 77338 USA.

Only those on the list receive a copy of the list. The cost? The price of your postage. We have even used other media such as cassette recordings. Who knows, maybe we'll all use videotape or computer diskettes in the future! Upon receipt of your request we will forward you a copy of the current list and you can begin an adventure in communication. You may be surprised to learn that other nudists around the world share many of the same problems we have in the States.

Oh yes, a WORD OF CAUTION, THE NETWORK is for nudists who are sincerely interested in communicating with other nudists worldwide. It is NOT a lonely hearts club or swingers' contact list.

New Zealand and Australian
Club News

WANGANUI SUN CLUB INC.

Hi Fellow Sunseekers

Although the weather hasn't been the best for this year, our club has been fairly busy.

Starting March off was the Kid's sports day. We arranged a nature trial, treasurer hunt, cricket and rifle range, plus lollie scramble, iceblocks etc. Also coming up in March is a Dance and Social and our Club's Miniten Championships.

With winter loaming its head around the corner, the club will be able to have regular meets at the sauna and hot pool. This will be starting half way through April.

We have been a little unfortunate that a number of our members have spread their wings to distant lands, but new members have kept our number up. Now with more to offer, we definately hope to see more new faces, especially family groups as our grounds are great for children.

With the help of working bees, our club grounds have changed for the better, and we now have had power connected to the clubhouse and also have pruned back some over-hanging branches to allow more room for tents and caravans.

A.O.H.C.

With the passing of Autumn and the onset of Winter our club scene at "Oranui" tends to quieten down considerably.

While climatic conditions that follow may be unpredictable we hasten to say that, some brilliant weather can still be experienced from time to time.

Our grounds are in excellent shape which, are an attraction for many pheasants, rabbits, and magpies that frequent our surroundings, something which has remained with us from our early days of establishment.

Turning to club affairs that have taken place recently. Firstly our annual general meeting which was held in May, gave members an opportunity to hear of progress from its management committee and plans for the coming year.

Our N.Y.C. members held a very successful social over Easter weekend making $250 for their effort. This was followed on Anzac weekend by a M.A.S.H. soup kitchen. These functions and others which are likely to be held are aimed at raising funds for a "Youth Drop In Centre" which they are hoping for in the future. An addition to our childrens play area which has been under construction over the past six months has been completed recenfly. This being the flying fox. During the weekends it has been in constant use and it is the case of queing up to take an exhilarating ride through a cutting in the bush and over a creek.

To conclude our summary we note that visits to a Thermal Pool complex, courtesy of "North Shore Nudist Club" are again proving popular for some of our members, also Sauna Evenings at a large establishment in the city on Sunday evenings.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

While the unseasonal very chilly Autumn weather has made use of the club grounds for sunbathing and swimming minimal, the members have been using the time constructively with building and maintenance activities.

As for the building activities these have centred around our new ablution block. In the last few months we have installed a large concrete water tank and pressure pump to maintain mains pressure to the showers, taps, etc. The septic tank is now on site and the next task is to bury it in the ground and connect the plumbing. We hope the electrician will be completing his job by early September, so final work can be completed internally by next Summer. Anyway we will keep you up to date in future issues.

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

Some of you may have been wondering if we from the deep south were still sliding down the Abbotsford hill, but I can assure you we have been doing a lot of rewarding steep hill climbing since you have heard from us last, and are peeking over the top again.

Our members have worked like trojans, and we are again able to offer a garden of Eden.

After a lot of hassles we now have power on our grounds, which means we have full kitchen facilities, power points for caravans, hot and cold showers, flush loos and a nicely stocked shop.

Even though we have not had a very good summer, weather wise, this year we have still been able to enjoy all the improvements to our grounds. Invercargill came up for a social and sports weekend which was enjoyed by all the hardy participants. Sauna evenings are still being supported well, even though at this time of year you need thermal underwear for returning home in.

Our biggest fund raising effort for the year was Xmas tree selling, which was not without its excitements and trials. Trucks and chainsaws breaking down, axes falling to pieces, people getting lost on the way home from the forest etc. All that aside, it was very profitable and we have decided to grow our own Xmas trees in the future. We might have to change our name from Orchard to Pineglades Two.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB

As most of New Zealand knows Hawkes Bay has had its fair share plus of bright hot sun - with mixed blessings. The grounds have been well used both with its own members and many "calling in" for the day or staying over. Many new friendships from other clubs members has been made. Unfortunately, the council placed a fire ban on and the bar-b-que activities suffered.

The A.G.M. was well attended with several new members attending. Camping bees showed an increase and the access road has been upgraded to take the increase of traffic.

A new president, secretary, treasurer at the helm and a election needed for the committee, the club will be moving forward.

NORTHERN SUN SEEKERS INC.

Some time has elapsed since readers last heard of us through these columns. Firstly, let us be quite adamant about one thing and that is, we are not in a state of folding up or dissolution. Our membership stands at about 34 individuals and is showing signs of increasing so we are not in a state of deep despair.

Our grounds at Tutukaka still look picturesque especially after John (one of our senior members) has thoroughly mowed the playing and sunning areas. The porch of our clubhouse is showing signs of old age and will have to be replaced before long. Another item for replacement is our pool cover which is getting holes in it quite readily.

Well, we would like to see other clubs' members up this way - you will probably enjoy our scenery and hospitality. Our winter activities will be curtailed somewhat but we hope to stick together as a friendly gathering.

NATURI SUN CLUB.

Another most interesting season is now drawing to a close at Naturi and we look forward to autumn and winter social programme and club improvement activities.

Our members are now directing their energies towards a start on the 1983 programme. Nearly all members are of one mind, to get together to accomplish planning improvements before summer arrives. They also know that working together can be almost as pleasant as summer "lazing". However, while there is plenty that can be done, none of it is very strenuous.

A "lamb on the spit Bar-B-Q" had been organised by lain and Anker for the Anzac weekend, and turned out to be a wonderful success. This will be followed by a 'Naturi Banquet' on the Queens Birthday in June, arranged by Keith and Lyn.

Naturi, hidden in the hills, or perhaps we should say, mountains north of the Hawkesbury river, sits quietly in the sun, awaiting its members. We have a glorious large, fully tiled swimming pool close to the Bar-B-Qs, Sauna, childrens playground and picnic pavillion. We have now introduced "Petanque" (lawn bowls) and also Archery, in a well secluded archery range. Ian, our single man, is an expert in Archery and very kindly brings his equipment to the club. This is much appreciated by all. Both games have given our members a new interest.

If you are not already a club member and reside in the Hornsby/Gosford area, why not join us now and be ready to greet the sun in the spring time.

Write to Secretary, P.O. Box 11, Berowra. 2081 N.S.W., enclosing a S. A. E. for our reply.

1st Woman President

The Australian Nudist Federation has chosen its first woman president.

Mrs Mary Weston of Corio Club, Victoria, took over the leadership from Peter Rowsell at the 14th ANF convention and rally at Sunshine Families Club, Queensland.

Mary, a former ANF secretary-treasurer and vice president, has spoken up for nudism over the years at every forum she could find. She has been active across the board, promoting the clubs, free beaches, youth activities and the supporters' scheme.

Mary and husband Ted Weston have attended every ANF convention, except for the year they were the Australian representatives at the New Zealand convention.

The Sunshine Families get-together - where the ANF flag was flown for the first time - was voted a great success.

The 15th Australian convention will be held at Tindo Club, South Australia, and the 16th meeting and sports rally in 1984-85 will be staged at Fiosco Club, New South Wales.

Woodlands Club, New South Wales, one of the oldest in the country, was re-affiliated to the national federation.

The ANF has 23 member clubs in all States, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory, and has the supporters' scheme and Young Nudists of Australia under its wing.

Mary Weston has promised enthusiasm and vigour during the next two years of her ANF leadership.
