32nd NZNF RALLY ORANUI

From the 28th December 1982 to the 2nd January 1983, the Auckland Outdoor Health club hosted the 32nd New Zealand Nudist Federation National Rally on the grounds at Oranui. It has been 7 years since the last rally was held in the Auckland region. Many members attending appreciated the improvement to the club grounds and facilities done by the members.

Mr Dail Jones the member of Parliament for Henderson opened the National Rally. His speech was well received, especially when we realised his interested attitude towards the movement. He was then given an extended tour of the club grounds. Accompanying him were Federation and Club officials and members of the press. This was followed at a later date by a return visit of Mr Jones and the T.V. media which gave good national coverage.

The days of the rally were taken up with various sporting activities which were participated in with great enthusiasm by many rally members.

The sports included volley ball, miniten indoor bowls, chess, darts and swimming. For the active jazzacise (rallycise) was held first thing in the morning. Other interests catered for during the lunch time breaks were sheep shearing, pottery, brass-work, archery, massage classes and creative dance routines. There was also a local prominent entertainer who was very appealing to all ages.

The wine and cheese evening was well patronised by all. Followed by a first class concert which was devised and presented by the various clubs attending.

The very large attendance of members was the chance to form new or re-cement old friendships. In conclusion it was good to note the cardinal atmosphere that prevailed. Many visitors took the opportunity of staying on and visiting the many attractions in the Auckland area.

EXERPTS FROM RALLY DIARY

The cars packed, kids in the back, caravan hitched and we're off to the Rally at Auckland Outdoor Health Club. Wait a minute though, this map looks like a spiders crawled through it, not to worry, its lucky we know the way. Finally we are here and the welcoming committee is all smiles. Our site? Yes it is down there, around the corner down the road and around the next corner, easy to find. At least the driveway into the grounds is as nature intended, surrounded in trees. The way to our site is like a mini township, instead of houses though there are caravans.

Oh! Our site is on a sloping ground. Out with the spade to get the caravan level and a site to put the awning on. Still it is worth it, as just to one side is a little bush area, which keeps us fairly sheltered from the winds. With the help of friends from Palmerston North it isn't too long before the kettle is boiling. It's working out quite good because in turn we helped them set up. This is putting the Rally off to a good start really, nothing is worse than trying to set up camp and no-one to help you when you need it.

It's after dinner now and we have settled down to do a bit of chin wagging to catch up on what's happened in the last year. As you can imagine it was early hours of the morning before we got to bed, our friends must of been tired after travelling up from Palmerston North.

It's the morning and so peaceful, we actually got to sleep in. We are surprised to see hardly a soul up near us. The weather isn't as we had hoped for, being overcast and a cool wind. That hasn't deterred a few though, as for the rest of us it is cover up as the clouds cover the sun.

The organisers are a bit disorganised at times, having made little allowance for NZNF meeting (not even knowing where the first was to be held), and driving delegates crazy by 'trying out' the public address system while debates are in progress. Later, they tore down the big tent prior to the final meeting (at which all members could participate). This then had to be held in the open, resulting in "frying" conditions (the Auckland sun was hot) for those determined to participate. Many had to find shade and hope they didn't miss anything important. Someone has a good imagination to think up the song for the Rally, 'The Pally Rally Jingle.' It isn't too bad, but why so early in the morning? Not that it worries us too much, we aren't close to the speakers.

Unfortunately over organisation has marred the nice wine and cheese evening somewhat; two different starting times have been advertised, and those who believed the earlier time had to sit and look at the trays and wine (already set up) until the 'boss' said 'okay' ... a bit of a turn off.

Once the night got going it was excellent with the band and Dennis's disco playing until the early morning.

We spent most of the days just lazing around, watching the sport or swimming. For the children an activity ten has been set up, and catered for all ages. Even the pre-schoolers had plenty to do. Lets face it, when the children are happy and content then so are you. They can either paint, do material pictures, draw, virtually anything they want. The kids even got to do body painting, but what a mess afterwards. With lots of soap and elbow grease it doesn't take that long to get them clean again. I know my children certainly enjoyed it.

The organisers have even got together and organised a day of fun races. These are really great to watch and have the spectators in fits of laughter. I don't know which one is the best; throwing the egg, the winners really knew how to be gentle. I feel sorry for some when the eggs broke, what a mess.

Then there is passing the bucket and filling up a larger one, thank goodness the weather was hot. Ever tried getting dressed in a swimming pool, swimming the length just to take it off and hand it to your partner for them to do the same. Many have to stop and put their pants on again so as to finish the race.

New Years Eve, thank goodness it comes once a year. It is a ship wreck evening, and a lot have very good imaginations. The costumes range from flax skirts, flour sack shirts to the oldest scruffiest of clothes in shreds. With the continuous supper, people were coming and going all the time. For those who wanted to cool down the pool is nice and handy.

The last night of the rally has arrived and a concert is being arranged with the acts from the various participating clubs. The children's programme is first, so the little ones could still get to bed early. Later on the adults are able to sit down and have a good time. Many of the performers have us all in fits of laughter and breaks were appreciated. (This ground we're visiting on is hard!) It takes a lot to do an act in such a large audience, especially when you have never done it before. May I congratulate all those who made it possible, you did a great job.

Without a doubt there are one or two people who are sick and tired of this subject, but because of the total ignorance of a good number of people at the Oranui Rally it is obvious that a lot of delegates who attend N.Z.N.F. meetings are unaware of the importance of their positions and therefore do not do their jobs properly.

At the ½ A.G.M. of the N.Z.N.F. in Taupo in 1982 a certain optional dress club applied for full membership to the N.Z.N.F. It soon became apparent that the Nudist Federation constitution would not allow applications from such organisations so the council decided to attempt to alter the necessary clauses to make this possible. After much deliberation the clauses were written out and given to the legal advisors along with a complete copy of the constitution to see if it was at all possible to achieve the desired changes. Eventually all was acceptable and a remit was then placed before the council meeting at the A.G.M. at Oranui. BUT to the amazement of a number of delegates the changes were turned down so of course it was a waste of time for the complex to reapply. A question was asked why it was necessary for the said organisation to have full membership. The answer to that is that when in business if you are paying money you expect a return - no half measures are acceptable.

The majority who belong to this club are people who either take their clothes off or at least accept the fact that others enjoy being naked in the sun, while swimming, and they do not need all the restrictive rules and regulations that seem to be part and parcel of incorporated society type of nudist clubs. In this complex alone the number of visitors in a six week period exceed the total membership of our Federation.

There is an incorporated sun club that has decided to give all these inhibiting things away and change into a company with a manager to run the club and grounds. These are the same people who have operated the sun club under the N.Z.N.F. and Incorporated Society rules and realise that these controls are restrictive and keep people away. On becoming a "country club" and operating as a business the membership has jumped dramatically.

Let us hope that by the time the members of the Federation wake up to world trends it will not prove too late to resurrect their self destructing organisation.

THE SUPPORTER SCHEME

Interested in nudism? If you're not already a club member then perhaps you've been to a free beach, or have just enjoyed the freedom of nudism at home with your family or your friends.

So you enjoy the nudist way of life. But maybe there aren't any clubs near where you live, or perhaps you don't want to join one. For you there is the Supporter Scheme.

Currently Supporter membership costs $13.50 per family unit per year. For that, Supporters receive a Supporter Passport, which allows them to visit those Clubs which support the scheme. Each Club's policy on Supporters is specified in the Australia and New Zealand Nudist Club Guide.

Supporters also receive the "New Zealand Naturist" each quarter, flown out from New Zealand to the A.N.F. and then forwarded on to you. With it, we send you each quarter the "Supporters News", giving details of Supporter activities and news. You are also entitled to purchase an I.N.F. passport for travel overseas, and for an extra $1.00 per year you can also take out a subscription to the A.N.F. Bulletin which gives news of the clubs and the nudist scene in Australia and overseas.

Sounds like good value? For membership or enquiries, write to:

A.N.F. Supporter Secretary, P.O. Box 371, BEENLEIGH, Queensland 4207

P.S. Club members can be Supporters, too!

ROTOTA SUN CLUB (formerly Rotorua)

Hi There and Happy New Year to all fellow sun lovers.

Apart from the weather - which hasn't really been too bad - the new year started with a bang. The grounds are looking great, with work being done by members all the time.

We would like to correct a popular misconception, the area that has been grassed and landscaped on the Geyserland Leisure Park property is the piece that is being leased by the Rotota Sun Club and is not G.L.P.

It was fantastic to see all the visitors - interclub and overseas - during the holiday period. At one stage members felt very much in the minority. We were pleased at the way everyone joined in - especially for the New Year get together - the best one yet for the club.

Unfortunately - or fortunately - we won the Rotobop Volleyball Challenge Shield by default. - What happened B.O.P.? - we didn't think the grounds were that hard to find. Maybe next time!

The creek and waterfalls have proved very popular, the waterfall & scenery at night take a lot of beating the lake has proved popular for boating & swimming alike - a few trout have also been taken.

Well do hope that you have all had as good a start to this year as we have had. Hope to see a few more of you visiting our new grounds in the near future. But please don't forget to make contact as we are unable to leave a key to the gate nearby.

SUNSEEKERS

In January 1983 Sunseekers was 21. Can we say that nudism in W.A. has reached maturity too? W.A. does not have legal nude beaches yet. Last year spontaneous moves by many Shires proved it is what the people want and it is only a matter of time. I feel that nudism has been accepted by the general population as a natural alternative pass time.

In 1962, Sunseekers was formed and acquired twelve acres of untouched bushland. Nudists were very secretive then. This made it difficult for them to meet or find clubs. Club notes in Solar, a nudist club of that time helped and Sunseekers grew steadily.

Today we have a two story Clubhouse, Large pool, sports areas, Put Put Golf course, Children's trampoline and play area, and all the other amenities including a large camping area. The membership is now one hundred and fifty units and increasing. The majority of the new members are introduced by existing members, others answer adds in newspapers and magazines. Many interstate and overseas visitors call and share our Club's hospitality.

Last year we had a stall at the local Shire Fair. This year we are running a Country Music Show. This is at an outside venue and we have to be clothed. This is a big step for Sunseekers as it is the first time we have tried anything like this and the first time the Club name has been used in publicity for a general event. The members feel that it will not detract from the attendance to have it organised by a nudist club!!

The Birthday party was held at Sunseekers on the 29th of January 1983. It gave me great pleasure to present the Club Birthday Port Wine to the members, especially the pioneers who had the foresight to start Sunseekers in those difficult time. The success of Sunseekers was the foundation for the acceptance of nudism in W.A.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC.

With 46 adults and 27 children at the Auckland Rally we may have been the largest group from outside Auckland, and we all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the good organisation, and the great weather. (for us) It was nice to renew old friendships, and for our newer members, to make new friends. Some of us stayed on after the Rally, others toured around the North Island and visited other clubs. We called in at the Palmerston North club, on our way back, and had a real welcome, with an enjoyable swim, and an afternoon cuppa ... (They all get together around 3)

It's always good to be .back at Fiveacres, we enjoy our club grounds and the company of all those there. Several of our South Island friends called in for a break in their journey. Some spent time with us. To exchange idea's and thoughts on how to make our clubs good and learn how each club is trying to achieve this.

Here is hoping our holidays have given us all fresh idea's and new plans with plenty of people to help on committees and at work days. The ones getting really involved are also those who are getting most out of the club.

Now... for our day visitors, why not bring some easy food and meat, and a bottle of wine with you, or buy something at the corner shop, and stay on for a barbeque. It's a great way to make friends, and you will have a very enjoyable evening. The barbeque gets lit nearly every Saturday and Sunday night during the season.

NATURI SUN AND HEALTH CLUB

Naturi is rich in colour and shadow and sunlight, and a strange dreaming quality as it lies peaceful and hidden in its own environment on the mountain side private estate between Hornsby and Gosford. Members are always pioneering, for the low scrub is ever seeking to encroach on the glades that have been cleared. One observes these bare bodies, like a group of timeless Adams and Eves, chipping or mowing, picnicking by the Bar-bQs, or playing Mini Ten on the courts.

The fully tiled, big swimming pool is very popular say nothing for the Sauna. For the children we have a large children's area with swings, trampolines, sand pits and a pool. Naturi is a naturist's paradise, it offers so much for everybody.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

The summer period has been a busy one for S.A.N.C. with substantial progress with our ablution building. The concrete foundations went down in November and the building was erected December. Plans are being worked on for further fundraising schemes to raise the necessary money to install plumbing, toilets, showers, water tanks etc. We intend to have the facilities fully operational by next summer. We had a good representation at the rally despite the sometimes inclement weather everybody had a fantastic time.

Membership recruitment for this summertime is already an all time high for our club with 23 new members enrolled. The publicity campaign we arranged has certainly been worth it and the club is going from strength to strength.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

This summer has seen an increase in membership at our club and a increase in use of the club facilities. There have been quite a few improvements round the grounds and in the clubhouse. We are now able to play miniten on our newly sealed court.

We hope that the publicity received from Radio Interviews, Newspaper Articles, and the opening of the Rally at A.O.H.C. by Dail Jones M.P. and the subsequent T.V. programme will benefit all clubs by making the General Public more aware of what clubs have to offer them.

TRAVELLERS TAKE NO TOGS

There's a motel in Palmerston North which offers its guests a free visit to the local nudist club. The motel is the Motel Capricorn on College Street, and visits are made, by arrangement, to the grounds of the Manawatu Sunseekers Club, where the pool, miniten court, picnic facilities, club room and swimming pool are at the guests' disposal.

These arrangements were made possible by the open attitudes of the club members and an endorsement by the New Zealand Nudist Federation of the Manawatu Sunseekers' idea for an 'Open Registry' system. This enables clubs to use local businesses as a contact point for nudist tourists.

In most cases, under this system, members of other sun clubs travel to the 'contact' business, show their membership cards, pay any necessary fees, and receive a key admitting them to the club grounds.

The 'free visit' for non-nudist motel guests is simply 'icing on the cake' (in the words of Manawatu Sunseekers' President Gordon McShean), allowing cooperating motels a promotional advantage in return for acting as the club registry.

"We hope that the 'free visit' idea will spread across New Zealand," said the Manawatu Sunseekers' President. "This kind of introduction to nudism could result in many more people applying for membership in the clubs in their home towns. We'd be delighted to have applications from people in this town who'd found out about nudism during visits to Hawkes Bay or Canterbury."

He added a reservation, however, that if the free visit scheme was to prove too popular, the club might have to reconsider. It is required - under its own rules - to provide club members to escort non-nudist visitors around the grounds. "We'll just have to wait and see if this becomes a problem," he said.

International nudist tourism is another goal of the Palmerston North city-centre club (and of the NZ Nudist Federation), and a companion "Cousin Club" project has been started to encourage international contacts. "These new projects could go a long way to opening up some of New Zealand's least known but most valuable recreational resources, he said.

CLUB AQUARIUS

Hello! from Ireland,

We have a new club and as you can see it's called "Aquarius" (it was started last January - hence the name). We have a 4 hour swimming/sauna meeting every second Saturday, throughout the year, for families and couples and sometimes a party afterwards, which is great fun.

Also, in the summer we have, on alternate week-ends, a very primitive site near Brittas Bay, on the east coast (40 miles from Dublin) where we camp and swim. This is very enjoyable for everyone, but especially for the children.

Naturism in Ireland is still young (we do not have any official beach yet) but things are changing fast, we hope to have had talks with the local councils to encourage them to try a free beach, or two!

All naturists are our friends, so may we take this opportunity to welcome all your readers to come and join us at any of our events the next time they are in Ireland, they would be more than welcome.

If you are holidaying here, but not on our east coast, remember there are thousands of beautiful sandy beaches all around our coast, that are hardly ever used, not to mention the many hundreds of small and large lakes you can have to yourself, apart from the odd fisherman who won't mind what you do, as long as you don't disturb the fish!

You can write to us at our club address above, or phone:- Jim or Geraldine at Dublin 01-90247, Paul at 01-780789, Bill at 01-800693.

For information on the Dublin area. A letter to I.N.A., P.O. Box 1077, Churchtown, Dublin 14, Ireland, at least a month before you go on holiday, will get you information on areas outside Dublin.

"OOPS"our Slip

is Showing

It seems we slipped up in the last issue of the Naturist with the article "Topless or not Topless". The article was compiled after reading extracts of the Summary Offences Act which were supplied to us as copies of the new law. This unfortunately was not so as the letters printed below correctly pointed out.

Dear Sir,

I wish to make a comment about the article titled "Topless or not Topless" in the December 1982 issue of the New Zealand Naturist. Some of the contents of the article are incorrect and completely misleading to your readers. The article relates to the current law on Indecent Exposure. In the article you have quoted both the old and the current law, and referred to them as though both were current.

You have quoted Section 27 (1) & (2) of the Summary Offences Act 1981, which relates to any persons intentionally and obscenely exposing any part of his or her genitals, and a defence they may offer if a complaint is made against them.

You then go on to quote a Section 47, Exposure of Person. The Section 47 you have quoted, is in fact Section 47 of the old Police Offences Act 1927, an Act that has been repealed and superceded by the Summary Offences Act 1981. Section 27 of the Summary Offences Act 1981, the first Section you quote actually replaces Section 47 of the now repealed Police Offences Act.

You correctly state that in the Summary Offences Act there is no reference to females exposing their breasts. This is because exposure of breasts is not a relevant issue. What is at issue is the intentional and obscene exposure of the male or female genitals.

The repealed Section 47 dealt with wilful and obscene exposure of his person, and was mainly concerned with a male person wilfully and obscenely exposing his penis, i.e. the flasher. The new act now makes it an offence for either males or females to intentionally and obscenely expose their genitals, and makes no mention of any other part of the body. Clearly this is still directed at the 'flasher', but now also includes females.

As the term 'genitals' is not defined in the Act, we can only refer to Dictionary definitions, which in general describe genitals as 'Organs of Generation or Reproduction'. In the male this includes the penis and testicles, and in the female the vulva. Clearly breasts are not considered to be Organs of Reproduction and therefore not at issue under Section 27, the present law. Looking further it would also appear that pubic hair is not considered to be part of the genitals.

On the face of it then, under Section 27, mere nudity in itself would not be an offence, as there would be no intentional and obscene exposure of the genitals, but of course a lot would depend on the particular circumstances at the time, and we will have to await a decision from the courts in this respect. In particular it would appear that female nudity would not be an offence as the female genitals are not normally exposed during normal nudity.

In your article you state a woman would be wrong to think she could sunbathe topless, as, if someone complained for any reason to the police, they would have to take action. My question here is, why would the police have to take action, and under what Act would they take that action? Clearly they could not take action under Section 27 as there would be no offence. The only other Section of the Summary Offences Act which could apply is Section 4 which deals with Offensive Behaviour and Language.

The introduction of the Summary Offences Act was to bring the thinking of the law in line with the standards and morals of the 1980's, and with this in mind, Topless Sunbathing could hardly be considered as Offensive Behaviour. In your article you refer to a Senior Policeman as saying 'if anyone claims the female upper regions are offensive today, I would take strong issue with him.' If this is the general feeling of the police it would appear they would be reluctant to take action if they did receive a complaint, but again we will have to await a 'test case'.

Bearing all this in mind, one concludes that your article is very misleading to your readers, and rather than enlighten them on the present law, I feel you have confused and mislead them completely. It is unfortunate that your article was published at a time when many readers will be heading to the beach thinking they would be within the law to sunbathe topless. After reading your article they will now no doubt be reluctant to do so. Unfortunately by the time this letter is published the best part of summer will be over and your female readers will not have been able to have the pleasure of sunbathing topless without the worry of being 'caught', as they should be able to do. Oh well, there is always next year.

U. BROADMORE.

Dear Sir,

It has been said that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", and that must surely apply to the writing of the article entitled "Topless or not Topless" in the December 1982 issue of your magazine. I refer to the two statements numbered 27 and 47 in that article.

The conflicting content of the two statements puzzled me - my suspicions were raised regarding the correctness of the article not only because it quoted two confusing provisions, one referring to the "genitals" and the other to the "person", but also because the penalties quoted were strangely at variance - on the one hand a penalty of $1,000 as an alternative to three months imprisonment, and on the other hand a penalty of $400 as an alternative to 1 years imprisonment - a greater fine linked to a shorter term of imprisonment - and vice versa.

Accordingly, I obtained a copy of the Summary Offences Act (No. 113) from the Government Printer, and read it through several times, just to be sure of my facts. My finding - that the paragraph numbered "47" in your article does not exist anywhere in that Act!!

The Act does have a Section 47, but that refers to an amendment to the Machinery Act 1950 - It deals with the offence of allowing children under the age of 12 to drive a tractor, ride upon a tractor while it is drawing any implement or to ride upon any implement drawn by any tractor.

I cannot understand how the writer has come to lump together Section 27, which is correctly quoted from the Act, and a paragraph, to which has been given the number "47", which does not come from the Act. However the misstatement in "New Zealand Naturist" came about, it seriously misleads the reader, and could have the effect of causing women to deny themselves the greater freedom that the new Act promised them.

And a word of warning - publication of the article might be considered to contravene Section 19 (1) (b) and/or (c) of the new Act which states that "Every person is liable to a fine not exceeding $500 who issues or distributes or publicly exhibits or causes to be issued or distributed or publicly exhibited any document that is intended or is likely, by reason of its wording or appearance or in any other manner, to cause any person to believe, contrary to the fact that ... (b) The document is or contains a copy of or extract from an official document; or (c) The document sets forth the substance of an official document.

Had your article been correct, then the Summary Offences Act would have penalised women not only for exposing any part of the genitals in or within view of a public place, but also possibly for exposing the breasts as part of the "person", defined by my dictionary as "living body of human being", in or within view of a public place - unless womenfolk were excluded by the word "his" in the quote. (Though often "his" also includes "her" where the context permits).

If my conclusions are correct, then we can obviously disregard the paragraph quoted in the article as No. 47 and concentrate on Section 27 which does in fact come from the new Act but which does not refer to the "person" - only to the male or female genitals.

The breasts could hardly be considered to be part of the female genitals. My dictionary defines "genitals" as "External organs of generation". Because the breasts are not involved in generation but instead in feeding the offspring, I would think that they are not part of the genitals, and consequently I cannot see how exposure of the female breasts could be in any way a breach of Section 27 of the Summary Offences Act.

My own viewpoint is that provided no offence is deliberately offered to anyone no women need fear the consequences of going topless in a public place, though I agree that she would feel much safer if such a situation were tested in a court of law and the court's interpretation were found to agree with mine.

As I see it, your article "Topless or not Topless" was totally wrong and totally misleading.

Unless you can find some justification for the article, which entirely eludes me, please rectify this most unfortunate misstatement in the next issue of "NZ Naturist". However, if on the other hand you can find some justification for the article as published, please enlighten your readers and quote the source of the elusive Paragraph 47.

Aubrey M. Fitton

To make sure we didn't draw the wrong conclusion again we asked our legal advises to supply us with an interpretation of the relevant sections of the Summary Offences Act. Their reply is printed below.

Dear Sir,

The writer, at your request, considered the article on page 14 of the Volume 103 December 1982 issue, which article was headed "Topless or Not Topless".

The writer has also perused the letters referred to you from readers in response to that article.

The article is indeed confusing as suggested by your correspondents because you have treated the new section under the Summary Offences Act, together with the old section under the Police Offences Act as being both still in existence.

S.47 as set out in your article was repealed in the Second Schedule of the Summary Offences Act and the only operative section is S.27 which is set out harem in full.

"27. Indecent exposure - (1) Every person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $1,000 who, in or within view of any public place, intentionally and obscenely exposes any part of his or her genitals.

(2) It is a defence in a prosecution under this section if the defendant proves that he or she had reasonable grounds for believing that he or she would not be observed."

Any Judge having to decide on that section would be obliged to refer to a dictionary definition for the word "genitals" and the writer does not disagree with your correspondents that that relates to "external organs of generation". In the writer's view, "breasts" would not be referred to as "genitals". The Section is a liberalisation of the old law which existed under S.47 of the Police Offences Act 1927 in that that section referred to "exposes his person" which by definition meant body or part thereof. The part of the body which could be regarded as offensive would depend on the social mores of the time and therefore was always open to doubt. Also note that the old Act did not refer to "her" and that is clearly being provided for in the new Act.

AN INVITATION

There are a large number of people in N.Z. males, females, mums and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, or families as a whole who do consider that there is nothing wrong with social nudism, but for one reason or another do riot or cannot join a recognised Sun/Nudist Club. They would, should there be an opportunity support the movement without the necessity of having to join a Club.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has now introduced into its organisation a "Supporter" member group, and you are very cordially invited to join this group.

For a small annual subscription any family or individual can become a supporter member, thus indicated in a tangible way support for the movement, and in return getting proper and official information on 'what it's all about'.

Like any properly run organisation there will be some rules, and these are set out on the application form. Simply they will be:

(a) Age 18 or over

(b) Not a member of a Club (Free Beach Group excepted - if you join a club at a later date your membership automatically lapses.)

(c) Payment of an annual subscription.

And what will you receive in turn?

Initially you will receive a receipt for your money, together with an official NZNF sticker suitable for car window or bumper; a 'Bare With Us' sticker, a year's subscription to the N.Z. 'NATURIST' and most importantly an INF/NZNF Membership Card endorsed "SUPPORTER", which will open the door to many Sun Clubs throughout the world including some N.Z. ones, and concession rates at these clubs. In due course a supporters Bulletin will be issued containing many interesting items and up-to-date information for the member on what's happening in Nudism, and associated matters of interest.

ALL applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Well now that you know something of the scheme you may like to join us.

The annual subscription has been set at $10 plus a $2 application fee per unit: i.e. individual or family.

A stamped addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1359, Wellington will get you an application form.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Sir,

I am often perplexed at the false ideas the rest of the world holds about some facts of New Zealand. An example of this is found in your edition 103 where an article entitled 'Stateside News' reference is made to N.Z.'s restrictive laws as they are enforced on her beautiful beaches.

Having always been under the impression our laws were enforced in courts and being unaware of any restrictive laws regarding beach nudity (which I assume the statement refers to) I am amazed at the confusion.

On turning the page I find that sort of reporting that causes such confusion: the article under heading 'Topless or not Topless?' This article totally confuses offensive behaviour and indecent exposure, which are not one and the same. It then quotes two excerpts purporting to come from 1982 Summary Offences Act. In truth only the first quoted, Article 27 on Indecent Exposure comes from this act. The second excerpt is from the 1927 Police Offences act - the act replaced by the 1982 version.

New Zealander's in general tend to be a conservative society and act as if anything not expressly legal is illegal. In regards to beach nudity, the Free Beach Group Inc. has long pushed opposite view i.e. as there is no law against nudity in N.Z. 'Free' beaches do in fact exist.

On Insight 82 (National programme 10 a.m. Sunday 17.10.82) Inspector Kerr of the Police Legal Department stated 'we don't have laws concerning passive nudity or behaviour that involves nothing more than nudity'.

Nude bathing has thus never been illegal in New Zealand. Sure that in the past, convictions have been successfully brought against nude swimmers for being offensive, means that future convictions must prove that offensive behaviour is offensive to the community at large and not just a small segment. He gave further protection by ruling, in deciding what is offensive, that time, circumstance, and place must be taken into consideration.

Inspector Kerr agreed that provided nude bathers kept to the 'established' free beaches around the country (of which there are many) conviction is unlikely. His comments at the time also applied to Topless bathing and this present summer has shown tops are being discarded all over the country without a rash of complaints. It may take a few years to entirely get rid of the rest of the costume but overseas readers can be well satisfied that nude bathing has a substantial and growing following in New Zealand.

Dear Sir,

Just received your issue no. 103. The article of Doreen and Peter lames contains a minor discrepancy. They must be talking about MOOREA, not MORUA, but of greater importance is the fact that at all hotels both on Tahiti and the outer islands can you find topless women lounging around the hotel poo1s. On the favourite beach of Tahiti Village one can see lots of topless women, and this is a mere 20 minutes drive from downtown Papeete. On Bora Bora I saw two total nude women right on the beach of Hotel Marara. It was 7:30 am to be sure, but these two female hotel guests did their calisthenics nude with no-one gawking or objecting.

On the same island, at Hotel Bora Bora they'll take you in a boat to a motu (a reef island) which is exclusively used for naturism. Tha was 13 months ego. The development is clearly going toward greater permissiveness in the Society Islands.

Just last month I passed Club Med outside Ixtapa in Mexico, and also here they have a special island for "los desnudos", and this despite the very negative attitude toward nudists in that country.

Leif Heilberg

Dear Readers,

I want to thank those who took the time to answer the questions which appeared in NZN no. 102. I found them candid and very interesting. If you are wondering just how many people did respond, I will break it down by country - New Zealand 3, Australia 4, and the USA 3, Now, I will break it down by family - New Zealand 1 (the only women that responded), Australia 1 (husband), USA 1 (husband). The other seven were single males. It seems to me from past studies that single males are more open, candid, and eager to share their nudist experiences. Are they the only ones enjoying the benefit of the movement? I should think not.

This is why I prepared a special questionnaire for families and teenagers. I have questions for the husband and wife to answer pertaining to nudism, and a separate set for the teens (state age). I went A Return To Eden to be a successful book on the nudist movement as well as informative. For your questionnaire write:

Dear Sir,

Recurring comments made in letter appearing in the N.Z. Naturist and in other Nudist Magazines relate to men having difficulty in getting their spouse or partner to join them in social nudism.

Reluctance of people to join the social nudist scene appears to be related to a fear of the unknown, suspicion of motives and/or the fear of adverse criticism.

An effective counter is to elaborate the positive aspects of social nudism i.e. Improvement in general health brought about by physical activity, exposure of the nude body to sun and air; a consciousness of the body and its appearance inducing effort to reduce and limit excess weight. A healthy and mature attitude in children and adults to their bodies, its appearance and functions. Finally relaxation produced by the friendly companionship that is a feature of social nudist groups.

Comments are also made criticising the pictorial content, and use of models, in Nudist Magazines.

Magazines that are prepared and published by Nudists for Nudists contain pictures that are complimentary to text, they are also a concise and very effective means of communication. One would expect to find pictures of motor cars in a motoring magazine, horses in a publication on horses, etc; it is logical to have pictures of nude people in a nudist magazine. It really doesn't matter whether the models providing the subjects are paid or volunteers.

Producing a Nudist Magazine that satisfies the club scene and is commercially viable would not be easy. Keep up the good work.

Cyril Jones.

Dear Sir,

Regarding "the New Zealand Naturist", at the risk of seeming as though I am suggesting how to run your business, it appeared to me that if the magazine had more coverage - something on the parallel of H&E Monthly and/or Quarterly - its popularity, world-wide, would be increased considerably. Then again, if the material availability is confined to New Zealand only, the coverage and format used is understandable.

As a naturist enthusiast, however, the "down under" approach to nudism has been very interesting to me. One day I may have the opportunity to see end experience for myself the attitude there which makes the movement so successful.

Dante S. Beele

Dear Sir,

I have written to you to inform you of the formation of "The Single Naturist Club of Brisbane."

We are a small club at the moment of about ten adults.

It is a mixed group and each new member is screened before they are admitted.

I would like to put right any misconceptions about the genuineness of the group.

Each member is a genuine nudist solely interested in the expansion of the nudist movement and not a shady group involved in sexual fun & games.

We don't mean to compete with the existing clubs, we just feel there is a need for a group to cater for single people who are interested in nudism.

There are very few avenues to advertise to contact nudists in Brisbane that is why I am writing to your nudists.

So if any of your readers live in Brisbane & would like to join our club they can write to me at the following address.

John Carpenter

Dear Sir,

We are a very small group and not worthy of mention. But we would be lost without your Magazine and look forward to every issue. Every printed word is really soaked up and the pictures are great.

We so much want to see what your country looks like. One thing we all agree on. These pictures of the women have beautiful bodies but we can't tell about the faces on some because they have their mouths so wide open you can't really see the face. Just our opinion. Everybody is not alike. Could we have a picture of a men now and then?

Loving you all, we close with sincere wishes.

Our Side of The Mountain.

Dear Sir,

I would like to reply to that article by Bobbert Broekstra, in the September Naturist.

With due respect to his enthusiasm on Saline Regenerative treatment or "Chlorinsity", perhaps it were best if we started at the reason why chemicals like chlorine and salt are used in a swim pool.

Answer, the need to disinfect the pool water. I have a list of 15 infectious diseases that are transmitted by man in the medium of water, Cholera and Amoebic Dysentery indicate how deadly some are.

Therefore the water must be disinfected. Health regulations require a disinfectant to give a maximum contamination and bacterial kill in the minimum of time. Contaminating organisms come from hair, cloth, paper, wind-borne rubbish, vegetation and especially from humans who do not attend to personal cleanliness. What disinfectant is used? Well there are at least 8 ways to disinfect water, but I shall deal with those two chemicals Robbert has mentioned.

When chlorine is added to water and salt put through electrolysis, a compound common to both is produced, it is hypochlorous acid, (HOCl) a powerful disinfecting fluid, I will shorten this to hypo. Hypo is the bug and algae killer and in a long series of reactions it produces dust, fallout and other compounds to be removed from the water by the filter. When hypo mixes with ammonia, found in body acids, compounds called chloramines are produced of which there are three types - mono, the least, di, and tri, the most dangerous. Bromine, a very deadly gas but powerful as a disinfectant, produces Bromamines. Here are two typical chemical reactions, Ammonia plus Hypo forms Nitrogen, Hydrochloric acid and water 2NH3 & 3HOCl = N2 + 3HC1 + 3H20. When chloramines are present we get Mono plus and Di plus Hypo form Nitrous oxide (tear gas) and Hydrochloric acid, NH2Cl + NHCl2 = N20 + 4HCl. Other combinations form further noxious smells and compounds. Therefore the pool water must contain sufficient disinfectant to kill the initial pathogens and bacteria and still have enough in reserve to combat the introduction of further contamination. If there is a pool devoid of disinfectant but contains 0.5 parts per million ammonia, then the dosing level of the disinfectant must reach 4.2 ppm before all the chloramines are killed.

It is these acids that affect the eyes and the compounds that leave the skin feeling uncomfortable and smelly, it is these problems that indicate the lack of disinfecting power.

Note I said disinfecting power, for the water does not know whether the hypochlorous acid was derived from salt or chlorine.

Some sea waters make our eyes sore, so who do we blame? "Oh there is too much salt in the sea." Chlorine is not mentioned, so what is the problem here? The answer is pH. What is pH? It is the concentration of Hydrogen ions in the water and is measured over a range from 0 to 14 where 7.0 is pure or distilled water, 6.9 is acid and 7.1 alkaline. Eye fluid is 7.55 pH approx., so if the water is pH 7.6 then the eye fluid is acidic to the water. Acid and alkali are constantly at work to neutralise each ether. Do we need pH in the wafer? Yes, for there is a definite balance between the levels of pH and hypo in the water for the optimum in bacterial kill, to assist in the filtering and for the comfort of the swimmers. Sea waters can be as high as 8.0 pH.

These then are the reasons for sore eyes which are as Robbert says through carelessness. I, like many other managers who have their diploma in water chemistry and its treatment, have been caught napping and had the occasional bout of discomfort, but when the conditions are continual then it is either ignorance of correct dosing procedures or sheer negligence on the manager's part. There are exceptions however, one pool in Auckland has an inherent problem. Despite years of research, tests, experiments and advice, no success has been noticed in reducing the eye trouble to zero. Water with a natural high level of aluminium or iron, if not treated properly can affect eyes and delicate membranes.

As an aside, when members of the N.Z. Swimming Pool Managers visited a newly installed saline generator at a public pool in 1975 at Christchurch, they were appalled at the state of the water.

A pool manager's greatest trouble in keeping the pH and disinfecting levels correct is not the water but those bathers who liberally smother themselves over with oils in the fond hope of a tan or protection from the sun then bake in the sun to a state of sweaty fermentation then (if at a Sun club a hasty duck in and out of the shower) dive into the pool to luxuriously thrash about making sure they are adequately distributing the mass of body waste to... well that is where the story started.

I hope then I have shown that the use of chlorine is not the big bad "bogey" as most people may think.

Peter Keesing
