Wanganui Sun Club - a Milestone

A milestone in the history of the Wanganui Sun Club - one of the oldest in the country - was marked last summer when the power was turned on in the clubhouse.

The Wanganui club has a long history.

Ideas for a club began over 30 years ago when letters in the English magazine "Health and Efficiency" began enquiring if there was anyone interested in Naturism in New Zealand.

Through these letters Ivan Mowlem, of Wanganui, and Percy Cousins, of Wellington, eventually met.

These two became fast friends through their mutual interest and belief of Naturism.

They decided to gather friends of the same interests in their respective cities and thus the two clubs were formed. These clubs have always remained in close contact although their progress was markedly different.

Wellington found its own grounds and grew to the strong "Five Acres" Club.

Wanganui club members however used to gather each week at the private urban property of their founder.

Because of the limited size of the grounds the Wanganui Sun Club was also limited in numbers and slow to change with the times as Naturism lost its nudism health camp image and took on the more relaxed, "good place for the families" atmosphere of the modern naturist clubs.

Chances to gather finances and look for its own grounds were lost to Wanganui as the club had become a little too complacent and had allowed itself to drift quietly along.

When it did have to find new grounds it was lucky to be offered the use of the present location to lease.

Now the club has used the time to consolidate its position.

The club has been very active building game courts, sunning areas, camping grounds, a swimming hole and even children's play equipment. Grounds and the surrounds have been much improved.

Any trace of health fads and the strict views of the old days have disappeared as the emphasis has shifted to having a club where it is possible to relax and enjoy oneself amongst family and friends.

It was only a few years ago that another big event took place. And that was the building of a club house.

Now with the introduction of electricity to the club house and for some caravan sites the club can offer members and visitors a lot of pleasant weekends and socialising even after the sun goes down.

The day trippers also benefit from the power as now a stove and fridges have been installed.

They also may be inclined to stop on later play cards, darts, table tennis or just socialise before going home.

Wanganui can now look to a "bright" future and big steps forwards as it is a good "all year round, all weather" club.

Many special functions are on the club's agenda for the coming 12 months. These include children's parties, sports tournaments, barbeque teas, hangis and social gatherings on the grounds in the summer.

Some of the winter activities will be trips up the mountains, bush walking and the special annual dance, as well as weekly saunas.

A wide variety of activities are offered by the club but if a quiet, relaxed atmosphere is what is wanted the rural setting offers that also.

The next few years should see much more expansion in the club and a chance to build up membership and finances in preparation for the next step - the club's own grounds...

A Pastor Ponders Nudism

Many years ago, maybe even as many as twenty years ago, I read an article which was written by a Church Pastor and published in the then "SOLAR" Magazine in which the Pastor detailed his personal approach to the nudist movement. The thrust of the article as I now recall it (unhappily, I appear not to have kept a copy) was that the committed Church-attending Christian could legitimately be an active, club-oriented Nudist.

That I have not forgotten the article confirms its influence at that time on my developing interest in a personal nudist orientation complimenting, rather than conflicting with, my personal commitment to Jesus Christ. I was quite young then - in my late teens

- but already believed that obedience to Christ and my personal sense of conviction was leading me into a lifetime of service as a minister of the Christian Gospel. I set about to try to somewhat suppress my nudist interest, feeling that such was the right course to follow, as I pursued my theological training and embarked on my lifetime's ministry. It seemed to me then that the Pastor who wrote that article had found a balance between his Christian convictions and his nudist club involvement which alluded me.

Of course, I was also single at that time, and every single male genuinely interested in the nudist movement will know that his single manhood is often his greatest obstacle to club membership.

Twenty years later I am an extraordinarily happily married man with two lovely children and, yes, I am still fully committed to my Christian ministry. The other question already on your lips also has a positive answer - my wife and I are active nudists and seek to raise our children to love and serve God and, in a Christian context, to develop a natural appreciation for their bodies and for ours.

However, I am still struggling with the idea of personal involvement in club-oriented nudist life, not because of any difficulty with social nudity, and not now because of being a single man, but rather because of a feeling that nudists who are also club members find our active involvement in Church life somewhat contrary to their way of thinking and their presuppositions.

In recent years, since the inception of the "Supporter Scheme", we have maintained our link with the nudist movement through that scheme. In the early years of our marriage we linked up with a club and eventually joined. Our membership was to be short lived - by our choice. Our ministry in the Church demanded the utmost discretion but we felt that some of our contacts with club members found them to be prying for more information about us than we were prepared to divulge to any but our most trusted friends.

Happily, such friends were there - one young English couple of similar ages to ours became particular friends. But he was in the Navy on an exchange and when they returned home to England that link was lost. A short period of correspondence followed but the club contact was no longer there. We allowed our membership to lapse, and thus our formal links with the nudist movement were severed, until the inception of the "Supporter Scheme."

Now some ten years after that initial period as club members we are exploring the possibility of club membership again - a different club in a different city in a different country. Imagine our surprise to discover that the friendly voice on the other end of the phone was also a committed, church-attending Christian. When a little of our background was detailed we found, to our delight, that complete empathy that we had sought so long and a recognition that our circumstances required that extra discretion.

As with many other Christians, so too for us, and not just because of occupational considerations alone, our personal convictions mean that Sunday is not available for our recreation in the sense of attending a club on Sunday and sharing in its social life. Add to this the fact that Saturday also for us makes its special demands in terms of readiness for Sunday services and you will appreciate that club life for us would usually need to be mid-week, normally Monday. Some club members find this just too different for them to feel comfortable about our membership.

My point is really a simple one - the Christian should exemplify care and concern for others akin to that which Jesus showed in his earthly ministry. This demands a desire for the good of others at personal cost to oneself if need be. The Apostle Paul, I feel, would fully understand. He was confronted by folk who had been converted to Christianity from idolatry. These folk refused to eat meat which was available for purchase by the general public but which had initially been killed in the course of sacrifice to idols. They were offended by anyone who felt that this meat was suitable for Christians to eat.

Paul's attitude was simply that the meat was good to eat and that the idols had no effect on the quality of the meat. However, for the sake of the sensitivities of those converted from idolatry to Christ, Paul refused to eat this meat and offend these converts. Does this mean that Paul then became a vegetarian? I think not!

Rather, Paul had the utmost respect for these dear converts and avoided in their presence or in any circumstances that were likely to come to their knowledge, to eat meat which had been offered to idols, prior to being made available for purchase.

At the risk of this seeming to become a theological treatise let me take this illustration from Scripture and make my point as a Nudist. There are restrictive Victorian attitudes affecting the Church so far as sexuality and nudity are concerned, but these attitudes are widespread in society beyond the Church as well. There are also countless thousands of Christians for whom the seventies and eighties have meant a much more relaxed attitude to nudity at home at least. My ministry allows me the confidences of many people and particularly in pre-marital counseling I am discovering again and again that a relaxed attitude to nudity in the home is becoming the norm.

As a Christian minister I must be aware of, and courteous toward, folk whose attitudes vary from entrenched conservatism and Victorianism through to those whom some would think were a little permissive. It is a Christian grace to seek to avoid offending any of these folk, especially when I move into nudist circles which would be seen by many of these good people as moving too far from what is thought to be appropriate. I must be sure that no kindly-intended yet idle word from a nudist friend caused my nudist-orientation to offend a Christian brother or sister or to compromise my ministry.

Recent articles in "The Naturist" and other journals tend to emphasise a non-churched Christian-nudist approach. Some have tended to follow a rather hard line against the established Church and sometimes also quite strongly against personal involvement in the life of the Church. For me, I must find my place in the social nudist scene from within the Church because I am firmly committed to that biblical teaching which emphasises the need for Christians to assemble together for worship and fellowship and to show concern for others as a corporate body, as well as on a personal basis.

This, then, becomes a plea for understanding for my position and for my wife and family. It is also a plea on behalf of many similarly committed, active Church-going Christians who would just as happily as us, take their place as members of nudist clubs if they felt that their position was really understood and treated with the discretion which it needs. The use of full names, and requests for more openness are fine concepts, but let Christians involved in the nudist movement "hasten slowly" please - and let others be more aware of the real issues confronting such folk.

As a footnote, may I ask for comment especially from Christian- nudists both within and outside the nudist movement. There could well be a case for a "Fellowship of Christian Nudists" and I would be very interested to explore such a concept. Perhaps a letter to "The Naturist" could be forwarded through to me, with the hope that in the near future, get-togethers could be arranged.

The PARENT SIG

"The Naturist Parent Sig" was started several years ago as an effort to bring more families into the camps and onto the beaches. Its only one of many SIGs (Special Interest Groups) started by The Naturist Society (formerly: The Naturists) P.O. Box 132, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, 54902, USA.

The Parent Sig has started a new colour magazine titled "Families Naturally" (F,N) and devoted to naturist & nudist families. From now on, we will share some of the photos that F,N will publish through the New Zealand Naturist because all magazines share the goal of promoting the same thing.

In like manner, we look forward to promoting the New Zealand Naturist in each future issue of F,N. We want to do this because we want to do all we are able towards helping all naturists and nudists, and the general public, towards becoming more fully informed. The more informed all naturists and nudists become, the more effective they can be. The more we inform the general public, the sooner we will enjoy greater public acceptance and adoption of our lifestyle.

Even though we are not very good at taking photos and making prints we hope that our sharing photos through the New Zealand Naturist will help prompt others to send photos to the New Zealand Naturist for publication. We are convinced that the news in the New Zealand Naturist is significant and that it should therefore be shared with more people in other countries. Personally, we would like to see the New Zealand Naturist grow as an international publication. The world needs to know more!

McConville is having its 50th birthday party this year, it is one of the oldest family camps in the USA (if not the oldest). They are unique perhaps in that most of the members have year-round cabins, rather than trailers. The same family has owned and managed the camp since the early 1950's. One of the sons, along with his family, lives at McConville year-around (as does the Grandmother, who still manages the camp). They have very nice and large facilities, and welcome inquires from couples and families: McConville, P.O. Box 477, Lake Elsinore, California, 92330, USA. Campers will enjoy the tree-shaded camping area and the very modern bath house, but they should bring their own drinking water and power supply. While the camping area is very level and will accommodate many large trailers, there are no water or electric hook-ups. McConville is a most interesting, beautiful and enjoyable place for families.

The Parent Sig will also continue in its efforts to build the all-volunteer nation-wide network of experienced camp and beach families who are willing to help introduce new families to enjoying the benefits of social nakedness. While we have a few willing families in other countries, we can hardly refer to the network as being "international"... but we will continue working at it!

The Parent Sig also networks those families who are willing to arrange local outings especially for families.

If you are an experienced family and if you would like to help promote your lifestyle - please contact us.

The more we promote the Family image, the sooner we will all enjoy greater public acceptance and adoption of our lifestyle... and the less many of us will feel the need to keep our lifestyle secret from some of our friends, relatives and employers.

If you are the parents of a family, please remember this and think on it often. When all is said and done: ONLY YOU can help your own family, and other families, enjoy the benefits of greater public acceptance. If you don't like the fact that you perhaps, and any number of other families, feel the need to keep your lifestyle a secret - please consider that you are the only one who can do something about it.

While the INF/FNI and the other organizations & publications can facilitate work that promotes a positive public image for your personal and valued lifestyle - they can not do it without the help and cooperation on MANY families in MANY countries. You and your family are needed!

As parents, no other individual has a greater vested interest in promoting a better public image for the lifestyle you enjoy and value.

REMEMBER: the more the public SEES families enjoying the benefits of social nakedness - the more new mothers will be tempted to join you with their families and the more we will all enjoy the benefits of greater public acceptance.

While there are enough men interested in trying your lifestyle, there are not near enough wives and mothers willing to give it a try! The very best and most effective way to tempted to join other wives and mothers to join your camp or group, is to let them know about your family and by letting them SEE that your family does enjoy it.

It is not enough to just talk about your lifestyle, folks must SEE it to believe it! In California we have a saying: "Talk is cheap!".

We are sure that people the world over follow a motto like:
"SHOW ME, don't just tell me!"
To that end, we really look forward to sharing many of our photos through future issues of The New Zealand NATURIST.

CALLING ALL YOUNG NATURISTS

When I look around the various clubs in Holland and other countries I notice that quite often very little is done for the young, and especially teenagers.

When teenagers reach a certain age many of them close the gate behind them, the reason can be just plain boredom, lack of entertainment, or they don't find any friends with similar interests.

I am very happy to see a youth section in The Bulletin, and this can also be said for the Dutch magazine "Naturisme". It's really necessary to have a column where the teenager can speak out on what he or she thinks, likes and dislikes.

We all have to think of the future and too many clubs are becoming grey, while the young ones slip out the backdoor. We adults should do something for the future generation, as in many clubs the older ones seem to be involved with their own age group letting the young ones muddle on.

I feel something should be done right away for teenagers to get into contact with each other, to improve friendship, exchange photos and getting to know the other teenagers all over the world, getting to know how they live, their likes and dislikes of the club they visit or the free beaches, therefore the following is being done (see right).

This article will also appear in naturist magazines and papers in Australia, England, Holland, New Zealand, Germany and so on.

After I have received your letters, a list will be made up with all the information on it, which will be mailed to you, and you can decide yourself to whom you want to write, and in what country. Out of this friendship will be born again; it may even lead to exchange of holidays and who knows what more. Don't be alarmed when it takes a while before you have received an answer from me after you have mailed your letter, it takes time to get all the information from around the world, so be patient please.

I will be looking forward to your letters. Lots of luck.

Nude Bathing in the French Caribbean

Leif Heilberg

Both Martinique and Guadeloupe have little-discussed, seldom advertised nude beaches where winter-bound New Englanders can shed everything. People of all ages and lifestyles are found on the discreet nude beaches of the sun-drenched islands in the French Caribbean.

Club Mediterranee has several villages in the French Caribbean where topless bathing and sunbathing, so fashionable in France, is common. In a low-key way, a secluded section of the club's beach on Martinique is classified as "clothes-optional."

For a really remote vacation, why not the Isles of de Saintes?

These islands off the southern coast of Guadeloupe are easily reached from the international airport at Pointe-a-Pitre. Air Guadeloupe flies 10-seater planes over the 15-minute route to Terre de Haut, the island in Les Saintes most developed for tourism.

Les Saintes has a 21-room hotel which is clean and comfortable - if in no way luxurious. The Hotel Bois Joli is about a mile from the island's air-strip. Normally a hotel Jeep will pick up and deliver passengers to the air-strip, a five-minute walk from the village where fishing is a major industry.

Hotel Bois Joli sits on a wooded hill surrounded by flowers and over-looking the blue Caribbean. Directly below the cliff-hugging hotel is a traditional beach with a pier, sailboats and sailfish. A motorized launch sometimes takes guests on picnics to smaller islands. This beach faces northeast and gets plenty of early morning sun. It is not nude beach.

However, a 10-minute walk away - over the crest of a hill - lies a beach which hotel owner Phillipe Blandin doesn't like to call a nude beach. "We don't even mention it in our brochures," he says. "This beach is simply tolerated by the people here."

Anyone may use the beach. Blandin said, with or without swimming attire, and the beach may be approached by land or sea.

Occasionally, said Blandin, guests at the Bois Joli spend several days at the hotel and depart without every knowing this "clothes-optional" beach exists.

My stay at the Bois Joli confirms this. No mention was made during meal conversations of the "special" page called Anse Craven. At the hotel there's no more public nudity than at Boston's Parker House - in other words, none. The operative word is discretion. Some tourists don't want a swingers' paradise.

The small but superb crescent-shaped beach, with a view of Terre de Bas across the water, is fringed by trees so you can escape the full sun. Facing west, the beach takes sun until late afternoon.

Some wear bathing suits, some do not. A few women are simply topless.

Fat, thin, single/married/divorced/separated, child and oldster, I found a mix of people on the beach - a handful of French- speaking Canadians, many U.S. tourists, and an equal number from France. Tourists from Sherbrooke, Canada, were talking with tourists from Clermont-Ferrand, something rarely seen in large hotels where the two nationalities sharing a common language seldom converse.

Even tanned sun-lovers escape the noon rays to eat oranges or drink mineral water in the shade of trees lining the beach. A sudden rain shower is refreshing. Some leave tree shelter to stand nude in the warm Caribbean rain. Fifteen minutes later the sun shines.

Vacationers looking for a secluded vacation should know that the Hotel Bois Joli has no nightclub, no planned evening entertainment. Nor are there any night-spots within walking distance. For me, no problem, I languished on the beach much of the day, except for a siesta. At night, after open-air terrace dining, I read until sleep came, happy that somewhere in the world was a small hotel which became quiet around 10 pm.

The attractive-priced French franc (as well as the French language, with a little Creole thrown in) is used throughout the French Caribbean. At recent rates of exchange, a dollar buys more than ever. At last report, it bought 7.1 French francs.

Besides the Bois Joli, there are two small, inexpensive hotels in the village, a short walk from the airstrip. I found it necessary to use my elemental French in the dining room at the Bois Joli and suspect French would be useful in the other small hotels.

AN INVITATION

There are a large number of people in N.Z. males, females, mums and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, or families as a whole who do consider that there is nothing wrong with social nudism, but for one reason or another do riot or cannot join a recognised Sun/Nudist Club. They would, should there be an opportunity support the movement without the necessity of having to join a Club.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has now introduced into its organisation a "Supporter" member group, and you are very cordially invited to join this group.

For a small annual subscription any family or individual can become a supporter member, thus indicated in a tangible way support for the movement, and in return getting proper and official information on 'what it's all about'.

Like any properly run organisation there will be some rules, and these are set out on the application form. Simply they will be:

(a) Age 18 or over

(b) Not a member of a Club (Free Beach Group excepted - if you join a club at a later date your membership automatically lapses.)

(c) Payment of an annual subscription.

And what will you receive in turn?

Initially you will receive a receipt for your money, together with an official NZNF sticker suitable for car window or bumper; a 'Bare With Us' sticker, a year's subscription to the N.Z. 'NATURIST' and most importantly an INF/NZNF Membership Card endorsed "SUPPORTER", which will open the door to many Sun Clubs throughout the world including some N.Z. ones, and concession rates at these clubs. In due course a supporters Bulletin will be issued containing many interesting items and up-to-date information for the member on what's happening in Nudism, and associated matters of interest.

ALL applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Well now that you know something of the scheme you may like to join us.

The annual subscription has been set at $10 plus a $2 application fee per unit: i.e. individual or family.

A stamped addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1359, Wellington will get you an application form.

CLUB ORIENT

Leif Heilberg

On the Northeastern coast of St. Martin, French Indies, there is a lovely naturist beach called Baie Orientale. It is about 5km. away from Aerodrome Esperance at Grand Case, and 15km. from Juliana Airport. Until three years ago the nearest hotel to the beach, Le Gallion, was beyond one end of the bay. Then some enterprising folks decided to build a naturist village called Club Orient directly on the bay, and today, fifty cabins capable of accommodating approximately one hundred visitors at a time, are in use to almost full capacity.

Don't be confused by the fact that St. Martin is part of the Department de la Guadeloupe and thus an integral part of France. Prices for food and lodging are much higher than on the island of Guadeloupe. At the same time there is much less to see. Were it not for sunbathing on sunny beaches, there could hardly be any justification for coming here. There is no tipping in the French West Indies, all prices being net, but on St. Martin you will find they add a "service charge in lieu of tipping" on top of room charges and meal tickets which are already high. In other words, you are forced to pay tips whether you like it or not, or, conversely, the prices are padded even higher.

There is no natural shade on the beach, so half a dozen small thatched roofs have been constructed to protect visitors with their tender skin. They are right off the sandy beach, on the lawn area, about 35 feet from the water's edge. Wind surfers, sailfish, catamarans, inflatable rubber rafts, and snorkeling equipment are available for rent at the beach. The restaurant, also situated 50 feet from the water's edge, serves meals and drinks at somewhat inflated prices, typical for an isolated resort. However, day visitors from other resorts on the island claim to pay even more where they stay, so you are definitely better off, financially, at Club Orient. The bar is well stocked with Dutch beer and French wines and all sorts of liquor. The chef is an Italian whose gourmet meals are excellent.

Most visitors seem to be in the 50's and 60's, but Sundays some younger local folks come visiting. Since gambling is allowed on the island, there is no trouble with betting. Another day there is a steel band coming around, just after the weekly (Monday) all-you-can-eat barbecue, at $20.00 a head. Dinner, with delicious soups, salads, hors d'oeuvres, barbecued steak, fish, and chicken, etc., starts at 7pm and is accompanied by the music which goes on till around 11pm. People dance to the Caribbean rhythms and truly enjoy themselves.

When you go shopping, on either side of the island which is divided into French and Dutch sections, you can pay either in French francs, in Dutch guilders, or in U.S. dollars. That even goes for the post office.

People are very friendly here; they all want you to relax and have a good time, be happy, The countryside is somewhat barren, with denuded hillsides, but in contrast the beaches are clean with with almost pure white sand. The water is warm and inviting, practically transparent, so you can see fish swim around the reef.

Snorkeling, you can see to the bottom and take in the underwater wildlife in all details, and with scuba equipment you can catch it all close-up.

At the northern end of Club Orient there is a public access road to the beach. Locals, as well as tourists staying elsewhere on the island, thus do their sunbathing primarily in the northern sector. Their white stripes or all-over paleness give them away as newcomers, and that is the vast majority, as becomes highly evident. Very much the same is the case on the southern sector where Club Orient visitors predominate. All through the bay, most people bathe nude, but some are only topless and a few remain in swim suits. After all, the beach is only clothing-optional, not really a nude beach. Before the club grounds you find a pontoon platform on the water, as well as several boats moored at anchor, primarily sail boats. Some small sail boats can be chartered for excursions to islands at the mouth of the bay.

The Club Orient has a small but well-stocked store with all kinds of groceries, fresh French bread every day, post cards, suntan lotion and other sundries. Prices are mostly higher than in the U.S., of course, and it is at an isolated resort, so your alternative is to rent a car for $30.00 and drive into Marigot, the French capital, to buy groceries at a supermarket.

Driving all around the island you will see that the French section is of a real residential nature, with many gourmet restaurants. The Dutch sector, to the South, has in the Western end most of the large, luxury hotels which charge an arm and a leg for their services. The Dutch sector capital, called Philipsburg, is to the South and contains a lot of banks, tourist shops, etc., with tax-free shopping. Don't let the tax-free label fool you, however; not paying tax says nothing about the profit level. Prices on many products are higher here than in the U.S.

Landscape wise, around those fancy hotels there is a lot of lawn, and close to the beaches a belt of palm trees. Otherwise the whole Western part of the island is rather dry as well as flat.

Around Philipsburg it is also dry, but with construction going on continuously, one pays less attention to nature here than to the tourist traps set up to lure passengers from the many cruise liners that stop by.

Only the Northeastern corner of St. Martin is really green and mountainous and here, of course, we have the most gorgeous beach of the island, Baie Orientale.

You will actually find the personnel at Club Orient very pleasant, particularly Louise, the general manager, and the restaurant staff. They all speak some English, whatever their home language, Dutch, French, Italian, or Romanian.

Reint Brink, the owner of Club Orient, has started to promote the resort in Europe, and very soon you should have all kinds of nationalities in neighbouring bungalows. Australian Fight For Free Beaches

Victoria needs "at least" six stretches of beach set aside for nude bathing according to nude beach campaigner, Mr. Jim Vickers-Willis.

Mr. Vickers-Willis, president of the Quality of Life Association, said optional dress beaches were needed to cope with the "thousands of Victorian families who want to enjoy nude bathing".

He applauded the State Government's move to introduce a Bill legalising nude bathing in this session of Parliament.

"It is about time," he said.

"It was an absolute disgrace that the past Victorian Government went on and held everyone back in the Nineteenth Century."

"They duck shoved the problem and let the prudish Mother Grundies control the situation for year," he said. Mr Vickers-Willis said nude beach campaigners did not want whole beaches set aside for nude bathing, but proper signposted stretches for their use.

Mr Vickers-Willis listed beaches suitable for nude bathing as Albert Park, Brighton, Sandringham, Mt. Eliza, plus Point Impossible and Stanley Park on the west coast.

"The more we have the better," he said.

"There should be at least half a dozen to cope with the thousands of Victorian families who enjoy nude bathing."

Mr Vickers-Willis said the introduction of nude beaches would see the decline of "flashers" along Victorian beaches. "The day we get legal nude beaches, that will be the end of them," he said.

"Flashers get their kicks from embarrassing people but if you have a beach with thousands of people in the nude, who are they going to embarrass?"

The Victorian co-ordinator of the Festival of Light, Rev. Bob Payne, described any government that legalised nude bathing as "morally bereft."

"The introduction of nude bathing would further erode the morality of the community," he said.

"It will make it possible for further public perversions to be practised."

Rev. Payne said it was irrelevant that a large number of people were in favour of nude bathing.

"A town might want to become a town of pot smokers because everyone wants it, but that doesn't make it right," he said. "The number has no relevance in terms of morality and that must be obvious to any thinking person."

Rev. Payne said the legislation of nude bathing would give "further impetus to the momentum down."

"It should be vigorously opposed in the interests of modesty, decency and virtue," he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Sir,

June '83 No.105 Centrefold - "Perfect Womanhood" An inspiration to Geneticists and to those who believe in Natural Selection.

What percentage of Viewers-Readers agree? "Perfect Womanhood".

What date did the photographer, he/she make this shot? Old or New? Since this Viewer-Reader has a 3'x4' framed gallery of twenty photos titled "Her (every woman's) Beautiful Hair" as presented by Western European Mags of the 60's he's curious as to the age of your June '83 centrefold photo. Congratulations to the photographer who produced this gorgeous representation of genuineness on natural background with colour reproduction excellent.

The human condition of optimum mental health in a nearly perfect physical body as represented, could be extolled ad-infinitum. What less should mankind want?

Nothing of course, as we strive toward perfection.

Since Viewers-Readers both admire and criticise no doubt the Editor-Publisher has been attempting to strike a happy medium in photo representation to illustrate our way of life to attain the maximum volume of distribution possible to the public.

But has a thorough survey been made among Viewers-Readers as to whether or not they prefer percentage wise complete naturalness in our nudist society, disregarding the individual models' preference to be natural with natures living hair where nature placed it on the human body by millions of years of evolvement for esthetics, protection and sexual attraction (why not shave the entire head and eyebrows, too?) or to be brain washed by commercial enterprise into living a wholly unnatural life?

We hope our Viewers-Readers truly love the genuineness of we nudists and that they are or will become part of our society, the clean, wholesome, honest, way of life.

If you the Viewers-Readers agree write the Editor expressing your individual preference For Hair or Without Hair. It does make a difference to ourselves and in the evolvement of our Nudist Society and to volume distribution for a successful publishing enterprise as well.

Sincerely, (a lifetime member since the 30's)

Joseph M. Taylor

Dear Sir,

After spending a lot of my childhood holiday in naturist camps throughout Europe I was taught that naturism was a natural, family affair and that there was nothing 'sexy' about it. After seeing the old and the young all enjoying themselves without being self-conscious about their bodies, I believed that this was the true idea of naturism - and I liked it.

But when I looked at your magazine I at first thought I was looking at Playboy. I mean with the gorgeous, young and fully-filled out chick on the cover and then a tall, long haired, young woman on the back, I was a bit confused. So I decided to take a look inside. Out of the 14 photos (and that's not including the gorgeous young woman in the centre pages who I'm sure is now decorating many mans' rooms and offices) 8 of them seem to me to be showing naturism as it should be. That is, people by the pool, kids on swings and young families enjoying the sun. Out of the 6 photos left, one of them is of a middle-aged gentleman.

The other 5 happen to be of young, attractive, well-proportioned women. One of them who happens to be in a most suggestive position on a swing!

Please correct me if I'm wrong but the idea of your magazine seems to me to be one of competing with Playboy. It is most definitely not a magazine promoting naturism in its true sense.

Jenny B

Dear Sir,

We enjoy reading your magazine and are pleased at the photographic coverage which includes family groups.

It is good to see everyone including young children enjoying the naturist way of life.

Possibly the inclusion of teenagers would make your format complete, making it a truly family magazine.

N. & K. Gileff

Dear Sir,

How can I make contact with some pen friends in New Zealand, or any where else.

I want to go to New Zealand in 1984/85, and would like to be able to have somebody show me around.

I like music, photography, travel, bush walks, nudism and most things.

I would like to make contact with anybody.

B.J. Prosser

New Zealand and Australian
Club News

WANGANUI SUN CLUB

Greetings from the busy little club in the River City. A series of events over the colder months saw a "Winter Sports Day" at the club grounds and this could well become an annual event, weekly saunas and some very productive working bees that were so pleasant we had volunteers to work extra days. The grounds are shaping up nicely for the coming Summer. Much thanks to our groundsman Brian and his willing helpers.

A few events on our interesting program that other club's members may wish to attend;

September 24th, Could be the social event of the city - the Sun Club Social with a good time for all, not only Sun Clubbers. It is not too late to plan to be there.

November 5th, Our usual Guy Fawkes night but this year also a Hangi tea as a dress rehearsal for the Big Hangi after the rally December 17th The children's Xmas Party with father Xmas. Following will be an evening for the adults and the next morning one of our hilarious Champagne Breakfasts.

January 3rd, the day after the rally. We host all the visitors to a Hangi Lunch and a day at our club grounds. We have already been planning this for months so if you are at the Rally we are only a short drive away or call on your way home.

February 26th is our popular Kids Sports Day a great lot of fun for young and old.

March 10th and 11th, Our miniten Championships. The rural setting of our grounds are pleasant to visit at any time especially now we have power in the club house and some caravan sites. Be seeing you.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB.

Our summer has gone, and so has our autumn, but we in

Hawkes Bay had a very good run in doing our thing.

We had a couple of days in June as work days, and those who did their bit on the first day had a bonus - yes, mushrooms - by the bucket full. The writer got his share on the way out, but those who were staying at the club had an extra on their menu.

The new club house draughty holes are getting less & less, the creek beds & water tables were cleared, the trees are trimmed, the spring bulbs are planted, the sun will show its face very soon and then we will be asking where has the winter gone.

We were fortunate to visit the North Shore club in April. While enjoying a yarn (with new made friends) and cuppa, we met the clubs mascot - who shared the afternoon with us. It was a mouse. (I never found out its name.)

While we weren't to be out done we too had a mascot, Nelson the ginger kitten with one eye. Unfortunately he didn't survive city life.

All of us in the Bay trust that the nameless mouse is still sharing in those tip bits.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

Things were looking up in early July when we held our winter social with a simple but effective theme "Mad Hatters Nite" and by the response it was obvious that it was not only the hats that were mad.

The night raised much needed finance for our ablution block and has allowed us to sink the septic tank into the ground and complete the necessary drainage requirements. The only major work now is the wiring and plumbing.

The Power Board is scheduled to connect our building early next month which will also provide power for caravans.

Our beautiful grounds are looking very green, the trees and shrubs are growing well and everything points towards a very enjoyable summer ahead.

YOUNG NUDISTS OF AUSTRALIA.

Over the years as each ANF convention passed it became obvious that organised youth activities were very much needed, not only to occupy the youth but to give them a sense of belonging and importance within the movement.

So, at the 11th ANF Convention at Bangalee, Victoria 1979/80 a group of children and youths met, and from that meeting recommended that an Australian wide youth nudist movement be set up for teenagers of the Australian clubs.

From this recommendation the teenagers met at the 12th convention (Rosco, N.S.W.) the following year and a group was formed.

The name Young Nudists of Australia was adopted and an executive elected. We also have our own emblem.

We now meet once a year at the ANF convention-sports rally:

  • discuss activities for the next convention.

  • elect office bearers yearly,

  • participate in general discussion,

  • participate together in sporting activities and outings,

  • communicate with each other during the year.

It is hoped that the youths within individual clubs form a group or appoint a youth liaison officer to organise outings, hikes, cam- pouts or whatever.

Yours in friendship

Andrea Plumridge
