APRIL - MAY 1987

Dear Members,

Well, we have a really good summer, weather-wise, and I know there are some pretty good tans about. And we have lots for your to do during the winter, too, so READ ON!!!

WELCOME to all those new members who joined in response to our advertisements. So far we have enrolled abut 130 people (80 membership units), bringing our membership to 289, including 50 children. This is a small increase over last year.

SAUNA at Clive Greens Health Studio, 14 Federal Street, City, being run by our President Tom Lewis. A Warm welcome to all members EVERY SUNDAY 5pm - 9pm. Adults $5, couples $8, pensioners $4, children free. Sun Club Members and visitors welcome, Tom reserves the right to refuse admission to non-members.

SOCIAL NIGHTS at the Sauna on the second Sunday of each month - BYO eats and drinks - ladies admitted free on social nights.

NOTE: The Sauna will be closed on Easter Sunday 19th April.

SWIMARAMA starts with a FREE night on 16 May, then every 3rd Saturday, 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Adults $2, children 50 cents. You'll find it near the roundabout in Lagoon Drive, Manurer. BIG WARM pool, plus SAUNA. Dates 16 May, 20 June - mark them on your calendar.

RICCARD'S, PARAKAI - last pool complex on the left, with restaurant. Last Friday of every month 6pm - 10pm. Adults $4, children $2. Hosts: North Shore Sun Club. Dates 24 April, 29 May, 26 June.

NGATUHOA LODGE was again the scene of our annual get-together, with 28 members including some from Wellington enjoying three days of fine weather, walk-abouts, and (very) refreshing swims. Almost everyone had a go on the flying fox, and we had lots of fun at our Fancy Undress Ball (Fern and Gay won most of the prizes!) The winner of a special prize for the whitest skin will remain anonymous. The best weekend we've ever had. Many thanks to everyone for helping clean up, and special thanks to Adele for organising it. We'll be back again next year - Anniversary Weekend - Keep it free!

MAYOR ISLAND was a real success, beautiful weather, beautiful beaches, clear water, walks all over the island, and of course, the Fishing - good eating, too! It rained the night before, with strong winds and high seas for the boat trip (fairly turbulent for some!) but we enjoyed it so much we wished the weekend was longer. Sorry to disappoint you - we can't go next year - there aren't enough long weekends, but we'll be back!

BEACH DAYS as arranged in the Diary have been reasonably successful. Thirty came to Papamoa and enjoyed the surf. About 15 went to Emiel's Beach (Huia) and Palm Beach (Waiheke). Attendances at Long Bay and Ladies Bay were disappointing, both being nice, sunny days. Where were you? Three brave and hardy people went to St. Leonards, despite the poor weather.

URETITI BEACH is recommended by John and Fran Riggir:- "We spent last Easter at Uretiti and enjoyed it so much we went back at Christmas, and will be there again this Easter. Several other members and locals have joined us at various times, and after the first few days we did not bother with clothes in the camp or on the beach, and many other campers followed our lead. Most days we caught several fish, and there were plenty of shellfish and crabs. Supplies can be obtained from a dairy about half an hour's walk north along the beach. One day a beer tanker stopped near our tent, and before the driver could get out of the cab we were standing around with buckets ready - what a shame it was empty. The Uretiti Beach Recreation Reserve has been upgraded with town water supply, flush toilets, cold showers and fire-places, and gives access to about 15 kms of beach, protected from the open sea by islands out on the horizon. The entrance is right on the main road with a signpost about 1 km past the golf course. Do join us this Easter, phone us at 565—219 if you've any questions".

IN THE NEWS - We are sorry to hear that the Bay of Plenty Sun Club have lost their club-house and records after they were broken into and set on fire.

A youth (not a member) has been fined $500 for sunbathing nude on Smaills Beach, Dunedin, on a charge of 'exposing himself to the public'. We urge members to follow the guidelines set out on the first page of your Beach List, that is, to Use Your Discretion, and Do Not Offend.

DATES TO REMEMBER - Write them on your calendar -

RICKARDS, PARAKAI - 24 April, 29 May, 26 June.

SOCIALS at Clive Greens - 12 April, 10 May, 14 June.

SWIMARAMA - 16 May, 20 June.

AGM and WAIWERA TRIP - Saturday 22 August. AGM at 2pm, followed by Waiwera Social, bus leaves AGM at 5pm, cost $l6 (less than last year).

So come along, we want to see EVERYBODY at all these events.

BEACH LIST — Adrianne and John Lowe are still hunting up beaches, and the next edition will include over twenty South Island beaches, which should bring in more members from those distant shores. Meanwhile, please delete Musick Point, and add these two:-
74a OHIWA: From State Highway 2, just before the Waiotahi Bridge, turn into the Ohiwa Harbour Road, 3 kms to beach. Park just before the beach where the road turns sharp left. Walk 20 m along a track through the bush to beach. Walk east out onto the sand-spit.

45a OCEAN BEACH, KAWHIA: From Kawhia, turn right at shops into Tainui Road, left into Waiwera Road, right into Hone Street at signs to Ocean Beach and Te Puia Springs. Drive 3 km through forest to shaded parking area. Track 150 m over dunes to beach. Miles of beach, black sand. Dig for hot water at low tide. Three motor camps.

Best wishes to you all.

Adrianne
