Ocean Beach, Kawhia

The distance from Otorohanga is about 61 km.

Where:-

On State Highway 31, 14 km north of Otorohanga turn west and go 41 km to Kawhia. Turn right into Tainui Road at the shops, then left into Waiwera Road and right into Hone St at signs to Ocean Beach and Te Puia Springs. Drive 3 km to a shaded parking area. There's a track 150 m over the dunes to the beach.

What's there:-

Miles of black sand beach; dig for hot water at low tide. There are three motor camps in the vicinity.

Comment:-

May 05, LK - If you are there at low tide you can smell the sulphur. Dig with your foot in the sand - start digging if it's warm. Only a small area. Sometimes we wait till others go before we take our gear off, though younger people don't mind.
