NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1988

Dear Friends,

The sun is warming up and I am looking forward to getting out there on the beach with everybody. Last summer seems so long ago.

GOOD NEWS - a cancellation has enabled us to book Ngatuhoa for Anniversary Weekend after all, and we can have it for a whole seven days! The Mayor Island trip will now be held over Waitangi Weekend. Details with booking slips for both of these trips are included with this newsletter, so that you can plan ahead.

Subs now due

If you have, THIS WILL BE YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER. So far, almost half of our members have renewed, which is excellent. Please send it in NOW if you have not already done so. Your Members' Directory will be sent out with your next newsletter in December.

MISSING NEWSLETTERS

These newsletters occasionally go missing in the postal system. Somewhere in each one, I tell you when the next one is due out, so read them carefully, and if it does not arrive, let us know. If you do not send in your Yellow Form, you will not receive a newsletter, even if you have paid your sub. The mailing list is compiled from the yellow forms, and we must have one to know you are still with us.

SIT ON YOUR TOWEL

It is the accepted practice at sun clubs, for hygiene reasons, to always sit on your towel. Those members who leave behind a wet patch on the seat in the sauna are not endearing yourselves to others who come after you. Please carry your towel about with you at the sauna, and SIT ON IT.

POHUTUKAWA BAY

Don't recognise it? The ARA have sent us a copy of their draft plan for Long Bay, and in it we find our own beach named as Pohutukawa Bay, and henceforth, that is what it shall be called. The first beach along is called Grannys Bay. Out of thirteen submissions, one was from the Free Beach Group, and another from two of our members. The plan is excellent, and very much to our liking. If you would like to borrow it, contact Jim or myself.

FERNLAND HOT POOLS

Swim nights will be held at the Fernland Hot Pools in Tauranga on the first Friday of the month, from 9 - 10 p.m. All members and friends are invited. Adults $3, children $2. The pools are signposted. From Katikati, go through Bethlehem to the roundabout at the top of the hill, turn right into Cambridge Road. Go about 2 km, then just beyond the houses, turn left into a private road which goes down a steep hill with a hairpin bend. Coming the other way, go 100m past the rubbish tip and turn right. Dates: 4 November, 2 December, 6 January. Contacts: David Taylor TG 69-843 or John Trotter TG 64-203. We have the exclusive use of open air private pools.

APRIL WAIWERA TRIP

If you can come, please add your name to the list at the sauna, or phone a committee member. The date is 8 April. We'll let you know if it's on in your next newsletter.

SWIMARAMA

Our winter swim nights have now come to an end, and we thank Pat and Tony once again for running these evenings for us. After many years of doing this job, they have decided not to carry on next year, and we send them a special appreciation for all the good times we've had. Thankyou, Pat and Tony, and best wishes.

We are putting on a smorgasbord supper at 7.30 p.m. with our hosts the Hibiscus Coast Sun Club. BYO and $5 to pay for the meal. Takeaways are also available at the restaurant, with 24 choices of Chinese food. Last pool complex on the left as you go through Parakai, If the door seems to have disappeared, look around a bit, as the entrance has been moved to the front. Dates 28 October, 25 November. We thank Jack for hosting these swim nights for all of us.

PHOTO AND ART COMPETITION

Now that our first effort has stirred your enthusiasm, we are planning an even better competition for next year, with MORE PRIZES. So that you can get busy with your camera, sketch pad and paints over the summer months, here are the guidelines:-

  1. The topics are 'Things We Do' and 'Places We Go'.
  2. Entries must be suitable and available for illustrating our Beach List. The committee reserve the right to exclude any entry which is considered unsuitable.
  3. Each entry depicting a recognisable person or persons must have a signed model release form attached to the back of the entry. These are printed on a separate sheet. Please get your own photocopies if you need any more.
  4. Photos which won prizes in our 1988 competition are not eligible for entry, but any other 1988 entries may be submitted again.
  5. Please make sure your entries are properly packed. The Free Beach Group accepts no responsibility for entries lost or damaged in transit.
  6. The entry fee is $1 plus 50 cents for each entry. Any number of entries may be submitted.
  7. All entries must be received by us no later than 18 August, 1989.
  8. If there are too few suitable entries in any section, the committee reserve the right to withhold prizes in that section.
  9. COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS must be no larger than 8" x 10", and unmounted. Prizes for colour photographs will be $20 first, $15 second, and $10 third.
  10. BLACK and WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS must be unmounted, and no larger than 5" wide and up to 7" high. For the Beach List, we want some full-page photographs, and some half-page photographs. We particularly want ordinary prints of New Zealand beaches with nudists on them, rather than photos of individuals. Prizes in this section will be $15 first, $l0 second, $5 third, plus three consolation prizes of $5 each.
  11. SKETCHES and PAINTINGS may be up to 16" x 24" (A2 size), and may be mounted but not framed. Prizes will be $20 first, $15 second, and $10 third.

COUNTRY CORNER

Great to get all your letters. Yes, I know, the district on our mailing list is a bit vague when it comes to where you actually live, but I didn't want to tread on anybody's toes. Some members are not in the Directory, and prefer to remain unidentified.

Thank you those who sent in addresses for Whangarei, Hamilton and Nelson publicity contacts. A member from Nelson has sent us a copy of the local Community Directory. However, the clubs listed in it all give a local telephone number, and it may seem a bit odd if we give an Auckland number. So how about it, folks? Would any of you offer to act as local telephone contact?

We are planning to send a publicity article to all the newspapers, and hope they will print it as a news item (which doesn't cost us anything). So please keep your eyes open and cut it out if it appears. Send us the whole page if you can, so we can see how it looks. We would like to know why country people join FBG. What do you hope to gain from the group? Please write and tell us, we can use these ideas for advertising. Please also send us a copy of your local club directory, available free from your local council, if they print one.

For the first time, I am printing a Country Diary, and I hope others of you will let us know where you are going, and when, so that we can let everybody know, and get you some company! I send a special thank you to the member who has suggested the overnight camp at Ruatiti Domain. I hope lots of you will be able to go, and wish I could be with you. Please let me know how you get on.

TALKING POINT

On some of our more accessible beaches, weaxe often plagued by voyeurs, or perves, as we usually call them. People who sit nearby and just watch. Some people will look, then look away. Others stare. Some look furtively, curious, but embarrassed. Voyeurs want to look without you knowing that they are looking.

I think most of us like looking at each other. After all, looking at people is part of our social contact, and our first impressions are often based on physical appearance. You appraise someone, then decide if you feel comfortable with them. It’s like choosing a car. If you like the bodywork, you look into the engine. Your appearance is the way your personality presents itself, the expression of the individual within. Our bodies cannot be separated from our souls, not in life, anyway. To not look at other people is a sign that something is wrong with you.

It seems to me that voyeurs have an inability to relate to other people on a personal level. Like outcasts, all they can do is sit and watch. We all have our own reactions to them. Some axe irritated, others don’t even notice. If you don’t mind, there is no problem. If they anger you, get angry, but do so before you are so angry you are losing control. Or try pointing a camera at them. If you want to be alone, say so. If you are uncomfortable, move away. Ox take the direct approach: “Would you mind moving to some other part of the beach!”

It usually works.

Well, I’m off now, out into the sunshine. Just one more reminder:-

MAYOR ISLAND TRIP - WAITANGI WEEKEND 1989

Mayor Island is a sub-tropical extinct volcano 17 miles offshore from the Bay of Plenty. The island is a wildlife refuge, home to the native bellbird, tui, wood-pigeon and our native parrot, the kaka. Many miles of walking tracks offer plenty of opportunity for strolls or tramping through glorious scenery. One track leads through the largest pohutukawa forest in the world. Another takes you into the island's dormant crater, complete with two lakes. Mayor Island is very popular with fishermen and divers. The Tauranga Game Fishing Club complex and the Mayor Island Trust camping ground are at Opo Bay.

The boat trip takes about 3½ hours from Tauranga. At the island there is no wharf, and all gear must be off-loaded chain-style, over a plank. The camping area is under pohutukawa trees just above the shoreline at the eastern end of Opo Bay, and is backed by high bush-covered, cliffs. There is a hut with two solid tables and two concrete tubs outside. No electricity. Facilities include flush toilets, cold. showers, or a hot shower if you collect your own wood, and two free-standing brick barbecues. It is best to bring your own cooker, as the barbecues are used by all. All cooking is confined to the camping area only. Campers may use the lounge bar and dine at the game fishing lodge. There are eight small cabins, containing bunks and mattresses only, and we have booked two 6 berth cabins and two 4 berth cabins. First in first served. The cost for booking one bunk in a cabin is $12, with no choice of cabin-mates. If a group wish to have a cabin to yourselves, it will cost extra. The total cost of a 4 berth cabin is $60, and for a 6 berth cabin $72. Please write a note on your Deposit Slip that if sole occupancy is not available you will share with others, or bring a tent, or decline booking and request that your cheque be returned. There are only two 6 berth cabins available.

You will need to bring Sea Legs tablets, tent, campbed and bedding (ground is very hard and lumpy), cooker, pots, pans and utensils, torch, clothing and personal gear. We will supply washing-up gear. Bring ENOUGH FOOD, preferably pre-cooked and frozen, in chilly bin, and milk powder. You will also need a backpack, strong shoes, and a water bottle for walk-abouts. The round trip of the island takes about six hours. There is a sunbathing area about twenty minutes walk over the hill from the camp at Western Bay, and it is about forty minutes walk to beautiful Honeymoon Bay, where we spent a great afternoon on our last trip to Mayor Island. The kahawai were biting too, so throw in your rod if you are keen on fishing, and gear for snorkelling.

DEPARTURE TIMES

Boat departs from Tauranga Saturday 4 February 1989 at 7 a.m.

Boat leaves from Mount Maunganui at 7.30 a.m.

Boat departs from Mayor Island Monday 6 February at 3.30 p.m.

Boat arrives at Mount Maunganui 6.30 p.m. Tauranga 7 p.m.

If we get deposits for 25 adults, we may have a boat to ourselves. This means we could leave about 8 a.m. and SUNBATHE all the way. So come on folks, send in your money early and ensure we have a great weekend.

15 to 20 cars may be parked, carefully, on a back section in Tauranga, about 7 km from the wharf. People using this property will have to arrange their own transport back to the boat. Please indicate on your Final Payment Form if you want to use this space. The name and address of the people offering this area is confidential, and you will be advised of its whereabouts with your receipt of your total payment.

All deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE at this stage, and may remain so. Refunds after 15 December will depend on the number of confirmed bookings, and whether cancellations can be filled. $5 will be deducted from any refund, and these matters might not be attended to until after the trip is over.
