FEBRUARY - MARCH 1988

Hi Folks!

Our Ngatuhoa Weekend was the best ever (or is that what I always say?) The best weather we've ever had, the most people (53 altogether, including five children), and a whole five days for those who could make it.

We also enjoyed having some sun club folk there, Carol and Bill from Rotota, and six members of the Bay of Plenty Sun Club. Their comments? "We never knew you had so much fun!"

We swam and sunbathed, we went hiking and white-water rafting, we dived and swam at the waterfalls, we played volleyball, braved the flying fox and hunted glow-worms. Saturday's Fancy Undress Ball went well, Jenny had a go at abseiling, and two of us got up at 5 o'clock one morning to tackle the Burma trail. But the best news is that the cooler now has a refrigeration unit. Cheers!!! No more beer lost in the creek! Someone left behind a pair of chrome tongs, and also a copy of the latest Naturist. Get in touch with us if either of these belongs to you.

Many thanks to Adele for organising the weekend. Sorry you couldn't be with us, and we hope that Geoffrey is mending well. Thanks also to Tom for all his driving around with the keys.

NGATUHOA 1989 will be at Waitangi Weekend, 3 - 6 February. It's a popular place! I'm looking forward to it already.

Our Sun Club friends have invited us to come and visit them. Please write first to Rotota Sun Club, or Bay of Plenty Sun Club to let them know when you'd like to visit.

The TAKAPUNA CITY COUNCIL does not appear to be enforcing its by-law at other than the main beaches, and both St. Leonards and Long Bay have been thronged as usual over the holiday period. The Committee have decided to monitor the situation, and not take any action at present.

Our FRED BEAR BADGE has been shelved in the meantime, as the Committee feel there is not enough demand to justify the capital outlay. This matter will be discussed again at our next AGM.

Our NEWSLETTER has been registered as a magazine, which will halve our postage costs. Occasional contributions from members would be welcome - send us your stories!

The Beach Days at FITZPATRICK BAY and MELLONS BAY were well-attended and enjoyed by those who went, so these two beaches will continue to replace Long Bay and St.Leonards for our official outings in the meantime.

We had a great day at MOKOROA FALLS, with one member coming all the way from Canada to Swanson! Nice to have you with us, Don. It was beautifully hot and sheltered in the valley, and we had the place to ourselves. But I must admit, I am getting a reputation for going on muddy tramps!

About twenty people were at the URETITI CHRISTMAS CAMP at different times. John reports:-

'It seems only yesterday that the holiday, began, and now it is back to work. We had a few showers, but the sun shone enough to give a good start to our suntans. It was a very quiet camp with a lot of room, and many family groups doing their own thing and not disturbing others. We forgot about listening to the radio, and only heard others on two or three occasions for short periods. The rest of the world could have disappeared and we would not have noticed.

The fishing wasn't good, but we kept our little band and some others supplied for at least one meal a day, and managed to bring home a few dozen for the freezer. Just after New Year scallops came up on the beaches. The rush was soon on to fill sacks and buckets. Days later as people arrived, the phrase "You should have been here" took on a new meaning. After this the sea calmed down and warmed up and we were able to collect tuatuas as well.

Members from Bland Bay, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Wellington and Christchurch called in. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and had a safe trip home. There is a rumour that the reserve is going to be sold to private enterprise for development as an organised camping ground. We hope not, as there are very few places like this.

We are now looking forward to Easter, and meeting the members from Whangarei again.'

Tom and the SAUNA are back in business again, with everything the same as last year. Our sauna evenings are held every Sunday at Clive Green's Health Centre, 14 Federal Street, City, from 5 - 9 p.m. Single $5, double $8, pensioners $4, children free. A Social Night is held on the second Sunday of each month, so BYO and a plate, and the ladies get in FREE. Dates: 13 March and 10 April.

RICCARD'S Swim Night at Parakai is on the last Friday of each month 6 - 10 p.m. Go to the last pool complex on the left at Parakai. Hot pools, takeaway bar. Adults $4.50, children $2. Dates: 26 February and 25 March. Hosts: Hibiscus Coast Sun Club.

The N.Z. NATURIST MAGAZINE is losing money, and needs more contributions to fill out the pages, and more sales to keep it viable. N.Z. Naturist can usually be found in booksellers and dairies amongst the R18 magazines, at the top of the rack, behind everything else. You may need to hunt around for it. We include here an order form so that you can get your copy sent to you.

TOM LEWIS attended the N.Z. Nudist Federation Annual General Meeting as our official Free Beach Group delegate, and was appointed as our representative to go to the Half-annual AGM. Well done, Tom!

We are organising a PHOTO COMPETITION to be held in conjunction with the AGM in August. The subjects are "Things we do" and "Places we go", and the pictures should be suitable for illustrating our Beach List. All entries which depict recognisable persons must be accompanied by a 'Model Release' form. We hope to run three classes, for black-and—white photos, colour photos, and one for drawings. Photos should be unmounted, no smaller than 9 x 9 cm, and not larger than 20 x 25 cm, while sketches should be no larger than 30 x 40 cm. Nude photographs will be developed by most photo labs and pharmacies, in Auckland, anyway.

A member in Dunedin would like some PENFRIENDS. Please write to Gordon Herd, C.P.O. Box 1794, Dunedin. Gordon is in Age Group C, and his interests are sunbathing, boating, fishing, camping, photography, letter—writing, reading, music, sports and travel.

PART-TIME WORK is wanted by a member who is new to Auckland. He would like writing, editing, or unskilled work, and is content with a low rate of pay, so long as he can get there in a bus. Please write to Robin Slessor, P.O. Box 5385, Wellesley St, Auckland 1.

I am considering adding these beaches to our BEACH LIST, and would welcome your comments.

KENDALL BAY: Go through Birkenhead, turn left into Chelsea View Drive and drive to the intersection with Onetaunga Road. Track goes in directly behind the Onetaunga Rd signpost. Where the track forks, keep going downhill, 15 minutes walk to beach. Go to the left— hand end of the beach, access difficult two hours each side of high tide.

MATARANGI BEACH: From State Highway 25, between Te Rerenga and Kuaotunu, turn off at sign to Matarangi 2 kms. Go through stone entrance and turn right into Kenwood Drive, drive 1 km to parking area beside Village Green at the end of the road. Walk west along beach away from houses. Fishing and snorkelling off rocks around Bluff Road. Camping grounds, shop and petrol at Kuaotunu.

OPITO: From Otama drive on 3 kms to Opito, turn left into Skipper's Road, go 100 m, park by stream. Walk north away from houses. No camping.

Well I hope you've all had a good summer. It has certainly been hot enough, and I must confess I have been enjoying my nudity indoors. Maybe the skin cancer scares are getting to me, or else it's just because I haven't got a pool.

There is a steady stream of enquiries and applications from new members, plus a good number of renewals from existing members, so our numbers are looking very healthy, and we're all set to put on a varied and interesting programme for the coming winter months.

Be seeing you!

Adrianne
