TALKING POINTby Gemini

Who is "Gemini"? Why does he/she hide behind a pseudonym?

The feed-back since I started writing for the "N.Z. Naturist" has been both gratifying and surprising. Gratifying because of the nice things people have been saying about my articles, and surprising because of the interest shown in the answer to the above question - who is Gemini?

Speculation as to my identity has covered a fair range of possible persons, up to and including the Editor himself. Conjecture as to my sex has included the suggestion that I must be a man as I "don't write like a woman". (A slight suggestion of condescension here - Unfair to the fair sex! Up Women's Lib!) In future, to avoid having to write "he/she" anytime I refer to myself in the third person, I shall say "he". No guarantee I'm not a "she" but to set your minds at rest, I'm not both - either psychologically or physically. (Anyone ever met a hermaphrodite naturist?)

Even my nationality has been the subject of interest. Those who remembered my first article thought it indicated that I'm a Pommie import. But then of course I could be a Kiwi who took a working holiday in Britain.

The purpose of the foregoing "ChitChat" (nice little "plug" slipped in there - thanks for the cheque, Mr Advertising Manager) is to introduce the topic of anonymity so far as we naturists are concerned.

We all know why many of us are reluctant to let it be known that we are naturists: Persecution for our beliefs (particularly in the field of employment) - as prevalent today as it has ever been, despite what many wishful thinkers may feel to the contrary. At best, naturists are regarded as "odd" and thus unsuitable for a profession or undesirable as an employee.

The list of occupations vulnerable to the disclosure of naturism is almost endless. From Members of Parliament (the highest of the high) down through solicitors, doctors (particularly psychiatrists!) dentists, nurses, ministers of religion, police and traffic officers, to writer of articles for naturist magazines (the lowest of the low). All are "suspect".

Has there been any improvement in the situation Over the years? I would say yes - decidedly.

What, after all, is the principal "accusation" against naturists? Simply that they are completely lacking in "natural modesty" and see nothing wrong in letting other people look at their totally nude bodies. The opponents of naturism (very conveniently) overlook the many societies around the world where nudity (or as near to it as makes no difference) is an accepted thing. If challenged, they will point out that all such societies are invariably "primitive" ones - as if that made any difference.

There is no such thing as "natural" modesty. It is a pure convention of our society, carried to the extreme of absurdity during the reign of Queen Victoria, when one could refer to the lower female extremities only as "limbs" because "legs" was considered to be pornographic. (I have heard it said that some people insisted, for the sake of modesty, on draping frills round the legs of billiard tables, but I'll reserve judgement on that.)

There is no such
thing as "natural" modesty.
It is a pure
convention of our society...

Every since that era, we have been gradually struggling up into a world of comparative sanity. Progressing through smaller and smaller swimsuits, then to bikinis, beachwear is now reduced to "le minimum". Bare breasts are accepted in more and more public places, with a G-string for women, and a pouch for men, being acknowledged - to an increasing extent - to be adequate cover for the genitals.

Queen Victoria died at the turn of the century. Three generations since then have each witnessed, and encouraged, a progressive shedding of unnecessary clothes.

(And before I forget to mention it, please, you students of the Bible, don't quote Genesis 3:7-10 to me, because throughout the ages there have been dozens of interpretations and they're all different.)

We naturists are not lunatics (contrary to popular belief). We do not seek the total abolition of all clothing, all the time, everywhere. We ask only for abandonment of the ridiculous principles of "natural" modesty so that, as and when the situation calls for it, we can publicly shed all our clothing in total freedom.

We naturists know, as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow (I hope!) that the sooner this morbid obsession with what is underneath a clothed body is abolished - by unclothed bodies of both sexes being freely available for inspection by anyone - the sooner will the incidence of rape, sexual molestation, voyeurism and all the other unpalatable aspects of sex in our present society, take a nose-dive.

It remains only for me to answer your unspoken question - what can we naturists do to hasten the arrival of this happy day? The answer is simple ... courage. The courage of our convictions. This does not mean scrambling for a place in the queue to have our nude bodies photographed in gorgeous Technicolour for the front cover of this magazine. I'm not prepared to do it, for a start. It's too drastic a step for me, and too soon. (But as I've already said in a previous article, I take off my hat to anyone who does.)

I still, however, never hide the fact that I'm a naturist and that I belong to a club. Anybody's welcome to know. (Fortunately, I'm not in a position where my occupation might be jeopardised.) So this is a start, something we can all do. Freely, simply and without ostentation let it be known to anyone interested that we practice naturism.

In my experience, this disclosure almost invariably arouses interest. People have been curious to know what caused me to become a nut in the first place.

And I'll let you into a secret. It's made more than one convert.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

EDITORIAL

IN THIS ISSUE we are pleased to present further articles by Leif Heilberg and Robbert Broekstra, two of our most active overseas correspondents. Leif is based in San Francisco and Robbert writes to us from his native Holland.

Both these contributors travel widely throughout Europe, and their firsthand reportage of the naturist scene there keeps us up-to-date with developments in nudist activities on the Continent.

Possibly only comparatively few of our readers in the South Pacific have the time or the resources to travel, even infrequently, to the northern hemisphere. We in Australia and New Zealand are as far removed as is possible from Europe, and the cost of getting there alone, before a sight-seeing tour is even started, can be prohibitive.

This is why on-the-spot eye-witness accounts of naturist resorts and special functions are particularly welcome to Australasian readers. We constantly bear in mind, however, our regular readers in Canada and the U.S.A.

For them, a European holiday is a far more practical proposition financially, and the number of visitors from the American continent to Europe increases every year.

Many of these readers for various valid reasons are not naturist club members, and it is our hope that the "N.Z. Naturist" serves, for them, a double function. It not only gives them news of naturist activities in this (comparatively) geographically isolated part of the South Pacific, (which most of them are perhaps unlikely to visit) but also keeps them informed on the naturist scene in Europe, which many of them are quite likely to visit sometime or another.

IF NOTHING ELSE, the contributions from Leif and Robbert constantly remind us of an important fact; the universal nature of nudism. Every one of their reports places the same emphasis on the eager friendship and warm hospitality extended to visiting naturists from overseas. Racial or ethnic barriers, real or imaginary, cease to exist.

Language difficulties are dealt with speedily and with the utmost good humour.

Reports from naturist visitors to Europe emphasise again and again the heart-warming friendship and enthusiastic reception encountered wherever they may travel. Of the dozens of world-wide fraternal organisations committed to the ideal of universal friendship, surely naturism, possibly the least-known and least publicised of any, is the most successful.

A Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Prosperous New Year to all our readers.

P.S. Thanks to K. H. Kendon, Mavis Robertshaw, Ted Dye, S. B. Evans, C. Saggers for responding to our plea for back issues of the "N.Z. Naturist" with some badly - needed copies for the archives.

Greatly appreciated

HELIO CARINTHIAby Gemini

An Austrian naturist paradise discovered by Robbert Broekstra

Twenty-five years ago, a Dutch family named De Graaf moved from the Netherlands to settle in the mountains of Austria, 12 kilometres from the historic city of Gmünden. As their livelihood comes from the woods around them, the naturist resort they have established was done from an idealistic viewpoint.

Three kilometres of winding, mountainous dirt road leads to the property. It is totally unsuitable for towing a caravan behind a car. Leave your van at the bottom, at the intersection with the paved highway from Gmünden (there is a special parking place) and drive up in your car. Someone will go down and tow your caravan up behind a tractor.

If you don't have a caravan, there are many camping sites, on different levels with different views. The rental varies according to location and the distance from facilities. There is a grocery store and a toilet block with hot showers and electric power points. A 300-year-old barn has been converted into a clubhouse with a bar and a small library. There is, however, no restaurant.

If you are looking for greater comfort there are cabins for rent. Prices vary according to the time of year; for four persons between $100 and $117 per week, for six people, $150 to $175.

The emphasis at Helio Carinthia is on peace and quiet; no blaring discos and the like. This is a place for lovers of nature. Countless beautiful walks, breathtaking scenery; a photographer's dream. Unsuitable, perhaps, for young children, unless they are content to amuse themselves in a small playground with a shallow pond to splash in.

Despite the altitude temperatures frequently reach 30°C. To cool off, there are four mountain streams running through the property. The water is crystal clear, delicious to drink but so cold you cannot stand in it for very long.

If it rains, campers gather in the clubhouse, playing cards, reading or just chatting over a drink.

To return to nature does one a lot of good.

To be and feel part of nature as God created it, to be enjoyed by those who have an eye for it. Helio Carinthia truly is a jewel in our naturist world.

Extracts taken from No.3 November 1956 of "New Zealand Naturist"
then called "The National Review"

New Zealand's
Fifth National Rally

This year's "Big Do" will be held in the grounds of the Wanganui Sun Club, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January 1957.

A minimum of 2/6 per adult per day admission will be charged.

Wanganui Sun Club

A hive of activity with preparations for the National Rally dominates the scene. Sandpits, swings and seesaws have been built for the children. The camping ground is almost ready.

Auckland Outdoor Health Club

The Annual Meeting was held on 7th October and quite well attended. Gerald, Colin and Beryl continue as President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Hans in Vice-President, new names on the committee (which has been increased to four women and four men) are Elaine, Beverly and Don.

Thanks to Colin's initiative the National Review is being distributed through a local newsagent; which reminds us, we have just issued a 'Newsletter' mainly for local information but if any other club would like a copy they have only to ask for one and will get it if there are any left.

Deposit on our 25 acres has been paid; work goes apace although it is disappointing that the road in has been held up due to the bad weather. The Club's representative on the Management Committee, at the National Rally, will again be Gerald.

Auckland Sun Club

With the improvement of the weather, work is now proceeding on the driveway down to the property, enlarging and screening the play area and sprucing up the clubhouse for the season. New members are reported, including that elusive "single girl".

Otago Sun and Health Club

The digging of the swimming pool is proceeding apace, following satisfactory negotiations with the owner of the 50 acres put at their disposal.

Canterbury Sun and Health Club

The purchase of a further three acres brings their total up to nine now and also improves their screening at the same time. The clubhouse is practically finished and a terrace in front of it is now concreted. The foundations are down for a tank stand and shower house, water should be laid on by now. The splash pool is to be concreted soon and a lucky purchase of 12' x 6' plywood and malthoid sections, that were a hanger, are being nailed to posts to improve the screening still further. We are pleased to receive an offer to sponsor the next National Rally in 1958.

CLUB NEWS

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

The A.G.M. was a quiet affair with much the same committee as before. The committee members extend from Taumarunui to Tauranga to Napier, and Bill and Caryle on the grounds. Delegation of duties is essential!

Remember the view over the lake from the showers? No more, they are now enclosed, but feel free to dry yourself outside while you admire the view.

Remember the story of the water pipe to Stage 2 (now called Gate End)? Bill and Ewan swear the pipe shrank 10 feet in the frost. I don't think they noticed the finished pipeline goes around Sally's Alley, not over it as first laid out. Not to worry. The small pine trees will be redesigned so that the tap can be seen.

Bill and Caryle have cut a track to the trig point - our boundary - and marked most trees with red paint. I'm not sure if they got lost while doing it as the track meanders through some nice bush and good viewing areas to join up with the waterfall track.

Don't be concerned if, at Rotota, you hear a piercing whistle followed by a yell from a different direction. It's just Anne calling for Tom or the boys who come running breathless and pantless.

The ROTOBOP challenge will take place at our grounds Sunday 24 January, in the form of a benefit day for BOPSC. We will be running raffles for meat (if Bill can run fast enough to catch them)!

All clubs' members are welcome to this weekend, or just the day.

Just to finish up with: A school friend of one of my boys asked if they could have a look at my photo albums. After first checking with his mother for her permission, they did and discussed the grounds and activities. The boy went home and told his parents. His dad phoned that evening and asked if I would discuss the club with him. Result? One prospective family membership; we are all going camping early October.

Looking forward to a good summer with our many visitors. Will you be one of them?

FREE BEACH GROUP

Have you ever camped at Uretiti? Parked your caravan, or pitched your pup tent among the pine trees, and spent the day on that glorious ocean beach? At Easter, 14 members of the Free Beach Group got together for a few lovely days in this idyllic spot, sunbathing, walking, fishing and loafing, before the rain chased us home.

It's a beautiful beach with a really good camping ground, ideal for our kind of nude camping. After we'd settled in, we did not bother with clothes, even in the camp, and many other campers followed our lead. Most days we caught several fish, and there were plenty of shellfish and crabs.

Supplies can be obtained from a dairy at Ruakaka, about half an hour's walk along the beach.

The Uretiti Beach Recreation Reserve has been upgraded with town water supply, flush toilets, cold showers and fireplaces, and gives access to about 15 kilometres of beach, protected from the open sea by islands out on the horizon. The entrance is right on the main road, with a signpost about one kilometre past the Waipu Golf Course.

We'll be back again next Easter, so if you'd like to join us, phone our President, John Riggir, on (09) 565-219, for details.

HIBISCUS COAST SUN CLUB

(Formerly North Shore Sun Club)

Season's greetings to you all. As you may have noticed we have changed our name. We decided at our recent A.G.M. in September that we needed a name that had a more local sound to it. "North Shore" gave the impression that we were near Takapuna, but as anyone who has visited our grounds knows, we are situated in Orewa.

We are planning to put in a new drive this year which will go through the pines. The old one is fairly steep and, in winter, makes getting out awkward.

Our swim nights at Rickards are going very well and we look forward to seeing new and old faces every month. 'Bye until next issue when we'll have more to say.

GOULASH NATURISM...

Of all the countries of Europe, none is

more hospitable than Hungary, says Leif Heilberg

Particularly when it comes to naturism, the warmth and friendliness of the people of Hungary competes with the warm climate to welcome one and all.

Although behind the Iron Curtain, Hungary is the most liberal of all the Communist states and takes all steps necessary to make you fell happy and contented. You need an entry visa, but this is easily arranged at any Hungarian consulate, or even at the border itself. Customs and currency control is easy-going; they will give a cursory glance at your luggage and won't ask anything about your money. Basically, you do as you please.

What are the attractions for naturists coming from abroad? Since July 1987 there have been three official grounds where naturism is practiced; Délegyháza south-south-east of Budapest, Mohacs in southern Hungary, and Balatonbereny on the south shore of the famous Lake Balaton. During weekdays in summer, around 100 persons are present at Delegyháza, and on weekends 3500 or more visitors cram the large and beautiful grounds and lakes.

Mohacs, lying next to the Danube, is smaller and quieter, with only a few hundred visitors at any one time.

Balatonbereny also has hundreds of visitors daily but can count on an every-increasing load of tourists as well as locals.

Unofficial grounds are many, of course, but the primary ones are Omsk Park right in Budapest, where a lake attracts hundreds of local naturists even during weekdays, and lake Velencei half-way between Budapest and Balaton, fairly close to the town of Székesfehérvár. At Velencei a couple of dozen naturists gather during weekdays and many more during weekends.

on weekends
3500 or more visitors

beautiful grounds...

Volantourist, one of the largest State travel agencies in the nation, is closely cooperating with MNE (Hungarian Naturist Association) to disseminate information on the availability and cost of accommodation near the tourist grounds, and provides all assistance on transportation etc.

Volantourist owns many hotels, buses, taxis, and other logistic tools of the tourist industry. It has "jumped on the band-wagon" seeing Yoguslavia's multi-million-dollar income from naturist tourism, and allied itself with MNE for a profitable investment in the future.

If, on the way to Délegyháza, you want to stop in the old city of Székesfehérvár, there is now being built a naturist "island" which will accommodate visitors. It is actually a small apartment complex with private courtyard surrounded by a solid fence. They are installing outdoor showers and plan to build a small swimming pool if finances permit.

To contact Hungarian naturists and find out more about this special naturist paradise - where low prices are the order of the day - write to Magyar Naturistak Egyesulete (MNE), H-1133 Budapest, Karpat u. 8, Hungary.

Hungarian drivers can be ferocious on the road. Over-loud discos - which the Hungarians have taken up with a vengeance - blare out day and night. Nevertheless, no naturist will ever regret visiting this charming country.

Your words, when leaving, will probably be a variation of "I shall return!"

OSTEOPOROSIS

There is a growing concern, says Dr Jim Selim over this crippling and often fatal bone disease

Calcium deficiency is responsible for osteoporosis, which affects women more than men, says Dr Selim. "Women are diet-conscious and seek reed-slim figures, which severely restricts their calcium intake." The disease often does not appear until later in life, but by then much of the damage has been done.

Osteoporosis means increasing porousness of bone due to a lack of calcium salts, causing a high susceptibility to fracture. Quoting from an American report, Dr Selim said, "Hip fractures are the most common result, and not from a fall from a high place but from a standing position. This shows how fragile the bones become."

The report also stated that "at least half of all pre-menopausal women do not take enough calcium to prevent osteoporosis in later life. Eight out of ten have calcium deficiencies." The minimum daily requirement of calcium is 800 to 1200 milligrams or four glasses of milk. Few women drink this amount. The answer lies in calcium supplements which should be taken from an early age.

Barrie Goldfinch, general manager of a New Zealand firm marketing calcium supplements, supports Dr Selim. He said that in New Zealand last year, 2000 women broke one of their hips. For women over 45, osteoporosis is said to be more common than diabetes, strokes, heart conditions, rheumatoid arthritis or breast cancer. "Once you have the disease it's too late to do very much about it. Prevention is the only measure and that must start early."

Eight out of ten
pre-menopausal women
have calcium
deficiencies

Mr Goldfinch went on to point out that "calcium supplements are now widely taken by sports people to relax and aid recovery from muscle and tendon injuries. This shows a relationship between calcium deficiencies and the response to booster doses of the mineral."

Like most essential nutrients, calcium does not work on its own. A "support network" of companion vitamins and minerals is needed. "Vitamins A, C and D, and minerals selenium, zinc, magnesium and phosphorus; Vitamin D2 is the most effective."

"Calcium supplement taken with support vitamins," said Mr Goldfinch, "is most effective when taken at night. It has also been useful in promoting restful sleep, relaxing taut muscles and soothing tense nerves. Calcium has also been known to relieve premenstrual cramp pain."

The risk of osteoporosis should not be taken lightly.

"The lack of calcium in the diet can begin in women around 35 years of age - sometimes earlier," says Dr Selim. "In the American survey, studies were made of 200,000 women who suffered hip fractures as a result of the disease. 50% died within six months. Of the remainder, 25% never walked again and 20% walked only with assistance. Surely an ounce of prevention is better than thousands of dollars of attempted cure."

Well, I have been in the movement nearly 20 years, on committees for most of that time, and, when introducing new people to the movement, I have unashamedly used the point that the club subscription not only covers all the use of the grounds, (unless camping) but also the monthly newsletter and the New Zealand Naturist.

When up north I have heard that people don't want it. Well, as yet I personally have never had any person say they do not want this magazine.

Our members are the usual cross-section of the community and not once have they said that the magazine was not welcome in their home.

Come on now, if these bigger, and biggest, clubs do not support our magazine there soon won't be one to support, so let's hear at the next annual meeting the members asking for the magazine to be part of the subscription again. After all, the cost is not great when you see these clubs' investments, while the smaller clubs (with overdrafts) manage to pay somehow.

Hoping this will move some people to stand up and say, "Yes, we want the magazine."

HOMOSEXUALS AGAIN

Might I reply to the correspondent who strangely enough mentions my name three times yet he hasn't the guts to put his own name to his letter; nor even the club he is a member of, merely that it is a South Island club. To compare homosexuals with nudists is ridiculous, and I find the comparison odious.

He says that 'Our confidentiality rules are a hangover from the days of ignorance'; apart from his anonymity, I wonder then, does he advertise his perversion in his own club? He asks just as illogically what evidence is there that a man who sexually molests a young boy is a homosexual? What else is he?

As for Aids, we all know that this dreadful and terminal disease is a virus and mainly confined to homosexuals and also spread by them; anyone not recognising this is bent himself or ignorant of plain facts. It is known medically that a spot of their blood or even saliva on a person's skin will probably result in Aids.

Of course some of these queers are also bisexual and in this way spread their virus to females (and their babies) and also to the heterosexual partners of the females, but it all stems from homosexuals.

I do not want the sympathy that he professes for me in the ordeal committed upon me by one of his sort. I find that his arguments are just as warped as his lifestyle, he says 'If I had been a girl molested, etc.' but I was a boy, molested by one of these dirty freaks, it proves nothing that I am normal, and horrified that these homos are infiltrating our clubs and using them as a venue for their unnatural practises.

He says that 'Gay' men (what a misnomer) are in our clubs already; that I do not doubt, albeit like himself cloaked in anonymity. Why he thinks that as some of them are office-holders that they are impregnable is just wishful thinking. I have always been given to understand that our clubs are mainly a family-organised group and I can't see where homosexuals fit into this conception.

DEPILATORY DELIGHTS

I am a 36-year-old Indian Marine Engineer employed as a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy. I have been a nudist for over a decade and a half, and after my marriage a few years ago, I have been able to introduce my wife too, to the delights and joys of naturism.

As my travels have taken me all over the world, I have been able to visit nudist beaches, clubs and gatherings in various countries, meeting fellow nudists and sharing our experiences.

One interesting feature I have noticed and which has prompted me to write this letter, is that, while I find most nudists both male and female of all ages, spending hours either toning up their physique or working up a tan all over their body, to enhance their appearance and beauty, it is only rarely do I find a nudist who has devoted a little time and attention to grooming his or her pubic region.

It is indeed quite a disappointing and ugly sight to find a nudist with a beautiful body and skin to match, sporting an ungainly and disheveled thatch of pubic hair. All the beauty of their body exuded above the waist, falls flat on its face, when one's eyes stray down below. It is really surprising to note that a person who has so much time to spend on the rest of the body, cannot bother to groom oneself properly in the pubic area.

I know most readers would like to contradict me and say that maybe the person concerned does indeed like the way she or he sports their pubic region. To these kind readers, let me mention and say that even from the earliest times in the Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Indian civilisations, the essence of pure sensuous and ultimate beauty was a nude form shorn of all its body hair, that is armpits, pubic region, arms, legs, buttocks etc specially in the case of women. One has only to read the sections of depilatories in various encyclopedias, to learn of the innumerable methods then employed to get rid of this hair, like - herbal preparations, pumice stone, plucking, shaving etc. In fact the practice of depilation of one's pubic region to enhance the beauty of the human body, is as old as human civilisation itself.

Today in the modern world, one finds that most persons while spending hours in beauty parlours getting rid of hair of the armpits, legs, farms and face cannot devote the same attention to their pubic area, which I find to be sad.

As we nudists, who consider the human body to be in its most beautiful state, only when it is unclothed and free from all its trappings and derive pleasure and satisfaction in being in such a state, I think greater appreciation and feeling can be achieved if one pays a little more attention to their pubic hair, so as to not only enhance their own appearance but also to exude the ultimate idea of beauty.

Lastly I would like to add in closing that both my wife and me have our pubic regions always clean shaven and like it too! I know it straight away draws people's attention and eyes to our pubic areas as we note the excited and surprised look on their faces, when they see us, and also the curiosity it arouses and wish to know all about it.

I trust you find the above observations and comments useful and interesting to publish in your magazine, for which you have my permission. Indeed you may even quote my name and address so that if any of your kind readers wish to write their own views regarding this matter, I will be only too glad to reply to them.

SINGLE MEN

When I joined the Five Acres Sun Club, I understood that "single" guys were not allowed to join.

This may be the situation at Five Acres Club but other clubs in the Lower North Island seem to welcome single men and in some cases are in high positions on their respective committees.

It seems that nudist clubs for these single guys is just a reason for a pickup or a perv, or what ever.

Is nothing private or sacred anymore? My wife, children, and myself enjoy the nudist scene, but it is ruined by these creeps being present.
