EDITORIAL

MOST (BUT NOT ALL) magazines and periodicals print in each issue a disclaimer, "Views expressed by correspondents are not necessarily those of the Editor" (or similar wording to the same effect.)

We have never been able to understand why any publications issue this "neither confirm nor deny" sort of statement, because it does not absolve the publication itself, or anyone involved with its production, from responsibility for everything printed between its covers. If Mr Brown writes a letter to the editor, intending it to be published, which defames Mr Smith, then not only Mr Brown but the publication and its editor are all at risk of a charge of defamation of character, regardless of whether any facts quoted may be true. The fact that the editor may privately agree with the charges made by Mr Brown is no excuse either.

THE EDITOR'S RESPONSIBILITY goes further than merely declining to publish anything which is obviously defamatory. Even if a letter received from a reader deals only with generalities, he has to decide whether its publication will start a controversy. He has to decide whether he wants an argument to start. Finally, he has to decide whether any editorial comment at the end of the letter is called for.

A naturist magazine's editor is in a particularly difficult position. The subject of nudism itself, as well as what might be termed "matters arising" from it - such as public nudity, pornography, homosexuality and the like - are all highly controversial if not potentially explosive subjects. As, however, a naturist magazine is a very suitable medium for public expression of views on these subjects, the editor would not be discharging his duty to all his readers by withholding publication.

His first two decisions are thus taken out of his hands, in matters relating to the arguable topics already mentioned. He is then left with only the third decision to make; whether to fan the flames or throw cold water on the subject, by way of editorial comment after the letter.

THE ONLY EXCEPTION applies to major newspapers, in regard to their support of a particular political party. Whilst not nominating it in so many words, the preference soon becomes obvious after scanning a few issues, by reading "between the lines". Happily for the editor, a naturist magazine is not even faced with this decision, as to which side of the political fence it will occupy. The only positive stand it does take is on the unquestionably beneficial effect of fresh air and sunshine, enjoyed in the nude. Few readers will disagree with this.

All letters we receive are given much thought as to suitability for publication. Many have obviously been written in the heat of the moment, necessitating considerable editing. Anything which mentions a specific person, or an organisation of people, or even a specific place, will - if the reference is in any way derogatory - be rejected out of hand. This is not to say that a correspondent is barred from naming names; in the case of a continuing discussion in the letters page, reference to a previous reader is often essential. It depends entirely on what the correspondent says. "Mr Smith in his letter to you is mistaken" is perfectly acceptable; "Mr Smith is a congenital idiot" is not.

There is, in fact, only one other matter on which we have an editorial policy. It is support of the principle that every person is entitled to his or her opinion. We may disagree violently with what you believe, but will fight to the death in support of your right to hold that belief.

THE PRITIKIN DIETby Doug Ball

It has become increasingly evident in recent years that there is something drastically wrong with our lifestyle, because so many of us are dying well before reaching our potential life span. We have come to accept that old age begins at 60 and death is to be expected between 70 and 80. Even worse, we accept that elderly folk will be physically impaired, partiality or completely immobile or suffering pain from degenerative diseases.

The best present I ever had was a book given to me by my daughter a couple of years ago: "Anti-Cancer, Anti- Heart Attack Cookbook". It awoke me to the fact that our accustomed diet is actually very dangerous, and started me on a safer course.

During World War II, a man named Nathan Pritikin noticed that European deaths from heart disease and diabetes had dropped dramatically, but increased by a factor of seven when rationing of meat, butter and sugar ended after the war. He did nothing about it until twenty years later, when the state of his own heart shocked him into changing his diet by cutting out entirely all animal protein, ice-cream, milk and eggs. Within six years he had completely reversed is coronary artery closure.

Pritikin's diet is based on that of the Tarahumara Indians of Northern Mexico, who have virtually no incidence of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer, and who have incredible endurance.

There are five "planks" to the Pritikin programme: Good nutrition, regular daily exercise, and abstinence from caffeine, smoking and alcohol. The main purpose of the diet is to cut down fats drastically and increase the intake of carbohydrate. The following table explains it:

Normal Western Diet

Pritikin Diet

Fats

40 - 45%

Fats

5 - 10%

Protein

15 - 20%

Protein

10 - 15%

Carbohydrate

40 - 45%

Carbohydrate

80%

Space does not let me list in detail the harm you are doing to your body by the intake of a large number of so- called "nutritious" foods, but for those genuinely interested, please see the editorial note at the end of this article.

Exercise is a vital part of the programme. Do not, however, attempt isometric exercises such as weight- lifting. This only stresses the heart and raised the blood pressure. Do instead isotonic exercises such as walking and running, both of which help to improve the heart and circulation.

You should do some form of isotonic exercise for at least half an hour daily. Do not do it on an empty stomach. Be careful not to overdo it. To check yourself, do your exercise, rest completely for one minute, then take your pulse. (Count it for 30 seconds and multiply by two.) If it is over 130 you have been overdoing it. The ideal is about 100.

"It has become increasingly evident .... that something is drastically wrong with our lifestyle ..."

Once you make the decision to follow the Pritikin diet you will find that your attitude toward food will change markedly. You will begin to taste flavours you did not know existed, and your will realise that all those great tastes you used to crave were simply sugar or salt.

The changeover to Pritikin is a lot like becoming a nudist. Come over to the other side, and when you look back, it's the other people that are different.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can obtain a detailed analysis of the harm many foods do, details of the diet itself, and a number of recipes by sending a s.a.e. to The Editor, N.Z. Naturist, P.O. Box 2925, Auckland. Medium-size envelope; at least 24cm x 12cm. Addressed to The Editor, please - not Doug Ball. And don't forget the stamp!

TALKING POINTby Gemini

The other day I had an inspiration. Reading through the Club News in our magazine, I was struck (not for the first time) by the large amount of repetition in the reports submitted by the clubs.

I then did a bit of research with the aid of several back numbers, and came up with some statistics that read something like this:

In a total of twenty items of club news, four reported having experienced a very wet winter, despite which seven parties of willing members carried out repairs and maintenance to club grounds and buildings; three clubs elected energetic committees, five carried out grass mowing, four swimming pools were in very good shape and two clubs had been victims of vandalism. There was a lot more but the foregoing will, I think, make my point.

Being then smitten by my inspiration, I sought converse with members of The Naturist's editorial team. My idea, I pointed out to them, would benefit a lot of people; vastly simplify the job of the gallant authors of club reports, save space in the magazine and lower production costs.

It is true I had been prepared for the odd raised eyebrow, but I had not anticipated the sardonic curling of the upper lip and the look on their faces which clearly indicated they thought I had at last gone right round the bend. (I know they've been longing for it to happen so they can all rush for the telephone to broadcast my downfall to the nation. I can see the headlines in "The Dominion" now - "MAGAZINE COLUMNIST FLIPS LID - PROGNOSIS HOPELESS SAY DOCTORS".)

My idea was simple. I suggested that a list be compiled of all the standard cliches (such as the above) used by newsletter writers. That this list then be numbered, one, two, three and so on. Finally, that the list be published in an issue of The N.Z. Naturist, preferably printed on a page that doesn't have anything important on the back (such as one of my articles) so that the list can be torn out and kept.

CLUB NEWS
Waikikamukau Outdoor Social Club
Numbers 2, 4, 7, 14, 15 and 18

The reader simply refers to the list he has kept from the Naturist and knows immediately what the Waikiki: Club has been up to.

Naturally, I can - as always - hear the howls of indignant protest from here, from all you gallant compilers of club news handouts. It's all very well for me to be funny at your expense, you are exclaiming. Writing comes easy to Gemini, not every volunteer newsletter editor has the same ability, and so on. Don't you believe it; writing doesn't come easy to me, it is - as with so many writers - a lot of hard work. But I can't deny that I may have been blessed with a certain way with words not given to everybody. But that's not the point.

I have no quarrel with the style of writing of the newsletters. In many cases it's totally competent, well-written stuff. In others, there may be grammatical and spelling errors but at least all of it, not matter how poorly written, is comprehendible.

It's not the style but the contents I take issue with. With the total lack of imagination shown by the various authors. Surely they must realise that it's just as boring for other clubs to read about their grass-cutting, pool-scrubbing, club-house-repairing activities as it is for them to have read about other clubs doing exactly the same things!

Believe me, all you newsletter editors have my deepest admiration, sympathy and understanding. You are doing a thankless task (as with practically all voluntary sun club work) but a vitally important one. Insofar as your newsletter goes to all other clubs as well as your own members, you are playing a vital role in maintaining important lines of communication which in turn contribute to the unification of the nudist movement throughout New Zealand.

But please, try and use a little imagination to make your newsletter interesting reading. I don't suppose that really any readers will be particularly thrilled to learn that last weekend five members turned up, each with his own lawnmower, and between them moved four acres of grass. But if one of those members spent the first 15 minutes futilely and blasphemously trying without success to start his machine, only to discover that he hadn't turned the petrol on - that's news! At the very least it will give a few readers a smile - which the first, badly statistical statement certainly won't.

Are you starting to get the idea? One or two of you have it already. The odd little glimpse peeps through now and again, mention of isolated happenings or sayings or whatever which are interesting or amusing. Concentrate on these; forget the routine reporting of the inevitable, repetitive activities of club members. Imagine you're submitting an item to Reader's Digest "Life's Like That" I'm afraid you wont get paid for it as they do - but you'll please a lot of readers just the same.

A DAY IN THE GULFby Doreen James

Saturday morning dawned clear and fine for the early risers on the boat trip on the Waitemata Harbour. We left the Auckland Outdoor Health Club at 7.00 am. in convoy and drove to Maraetai Beach, where we were ferried out to the converted fishing boat the "Galilee"

Once we were under way we cooked breakfast on the gas stove. We sailed around Waiheke Island and dropped the fishing lines when several schools of fish were seen. Then on up the channel, past Ponui, Rotoroa and Pakatoa Islands, eventually heaving to by an isolated beach on the far side of Waiheke Island.

Here we had a picnic lunch on the beach, then while some swam or sunbathed, others explored a small cave and climbed to the top of a high headland which had an extensive view of the Hauraki Gulf. Some of the party continued to fish while others went scuba diving.

We eventually left our private bay at 4.00 pm. for the homeward-bound journey. We stopped once for more fishing but most of the schnapper were too small to keep. The crew of one luxury launch were very surprised to see a bunch of nude people on our boat, and circled us again while we cheered and waved.

We enjoyed a good sing-song all the way home; our interpretation of "I've Got A Loverly Bunch of Coconuts" was certainly unique.

We arrived back at the Club at 9.30 pm. tired but happy - what a day! We are planning more day trips on the harbour as well as a weekend trip to Great Barrier Island, including more one-day voyages when our Club hosts the Rally next summer.

NEWS FROM

      AROUND

      THE WORLD

Collected by Roy Cox

This is to let all readers know that we are going into our fourth year with INIC. Many naturists from around the world are making use of our centre and we do get all sorts of questions and from naturists in the U.S.A. especially about where can we visit nude beaches in Europe, where can we pitch up our tent at what clubs in Holland or France. How can we book for d'Agde and what is it like, where can I meet young naturists and so it goes on.

Every day we receive many letters from all parts of the world, even from countries where naturism does not even exist, it is here that we pay special attention to, because there are many naturists in countries where they just don't have any nude beaches or clubs, and we are glad to let all your readers know that in countries like Brazil and Mexico things are moving, naturists are getting together and are starting nude beaches. Even in Bulgaria and Poland naturism is on the move and so be it.

Through our correspondence clubs (WCCN & WCCYN) we have made many friends and some telephone each other or go out on vacation or visit each other, one couple was married the other day, she came from Australia and he from France.

If you want to join our worldwide organisation please mail us (U.S.A.) $5.00 cash or send us a bank cheque made out to R. Broekstra ABN Kneuterdijk 1, The Hague-Holland (INIC).

We support and work together with the INF (their offices located in Belgium) and INIC has also activities in The Netherlands like swimming, bowling, skittles, tennis, badminton, gymnastics and so on.

Your name and address is listed free each time our correspondence lists come out, if you wish.

TV PROGRAMME

BBC's "The Travel Show" transmitted an item on naturist holidays last year.

British nudists were interviewed on their holiday habits and leisure style from the French naturist centre Cap d'Agde. The report was the first lengthy and serious item featuring nudism to appear on British TV holiday/travel programmes. It was both well presented and factually correct.

A definitive documentary programme version of the book History of British Naturist Movement is being produced for screening in 1987. Efforts are currently in hand to pre-sell the programme to TV stations world-wide. I wonder if we will see it?

A NEW SUN CLUB FOR ALICE

Alice Springs now has its own club. In the red heart where the sun shines for 90% of the year, conditions it seems are not quite idealistic as first impressions may indicate. Summer brings temperatures of 38 - 43 degrees C in the shade with no rivers and very few water holes to cool off in.

Then in the winter when cooling off is no problems the temperature may range from minus 7 up to 20 degrees.

The club has no permanent grounds at the moment but with a few thousand square miles of bush about three minutes from downtown Alice that doesn't appear to present any problems.

NUDE NEWS FROM OVERSEAS

Swagman Playa Blanca Beach Resort of Laoag, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines welcomes topless bathers and advises that it also has "nice stretches of secluded beach" nearby for nude swimming.

In Milwaukee, U.S.A., a motorcycle patrolman with nine years on the force who enjoys skinny dipping at nude Paradise Beach was arrested by his peers in blue and charged with disorderly conduct.

At an annual religious festival of Chandraggutti village, Karnataka, India,

police prevented nude river- bathing and a nude procession to the temple, which has formed an integral part of the ceremony for centuries.

A few western women continue illegal topless sunbathing on Batu Ferringhi beach in Penang Island, Malaysia, despite many protests to newspapers from residents.

The Institut fur Demoskopie Allensbach in Germany has been polling people over a period of 15 years to record changing attitudes towards nude bathing.

In 1972, 43% of women thought it shocking, in 1986 the figure had dropped to 33% and of women under age 30, only 12% found it objectionable. But questioned on other subjects, 69% objected to young people who won't give up their seats on the bus to the elderly, and a close second: 67% objected to smokers.

In Europe including Great Britain, in the seven years from 1979 to 1986, the number of officially approved free beaches for nude swimming and sunbathing has doubled from 600 to 1200.

ADOLESCENTS AGAIN

I do not agree with "Tahanga" of Sydney in the March issue. As an ex-teacher of adolescents for eighteen years I believe that these younger adults like to model themselves on adults in real life despite what television shows us. If adult members of our clubs dress up or partly so when ordinary club activities occur then the adolescent population will follow suit. When adults go naked then the younger members will take that as being normal behaviour.

No, we need not nag them about nudity at all but set ourselves up as typical nudists. Another thing is that youths are dependent on adults for most of their teenage years and this dependence includes a certain conformity in behaviour. If we expose youngsters to certain pursuits, certain activities, etc., then they will take these activities as being the norm and follow the pattern set down.

At a later stage in life adolescents will achieve independence and a mature status for themselves.

HOMOSEXUALS

It is sadly ironic that most of what W. Harrison says about homosexuals - "perverts" "filthy practices" "freaks" "a serious threat" - was once commonly (and is still occasionally) said about nudists. Our confidentiality rules are a hangover from those days of ignorance.

Everyone must sympathise with him in the trauma of having been molested as a child, but what evidence does he have that the man who molested him was homosexual - interested in other men? After all, if he had been a girl, molested by perhaps the same man, would she now be urging that heterosexuals be kept out of the clubs? He himself is living proof that molestation does not make boys grow up homosexual (rather, that it seems more likely to make them homophobic). W. Harrison should rejoice at the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Act, which increased the penalty for molesting boys.

As far as is known, sexual orientation is determined well before the age of 14 - perhaps as young as seven - but only some homosexual males know their orientation by that age.

It is dangerously false to imagine that AIDS has any direct connection to the sex or sexuality of its carriers:

AIDS can be transmitted by heterosexual acts, so heterosexuals can transmit AIDS. Everyone who has not been celibate or 100% faithful to a 100% faithful partner for the last five years or so is at some risk.

As for W. Harrison's inability to stay in a sun club knowing "these perverts" are around, well, we must bid him a sad farewell, because there are gay men in sun clubs, probably including his, and possibly some in all of them. Nor would it be wise to suggest that they leave, because some are office-bearers.

I suggest he let sleeping dogs lie.

Our club activities have run down to a low level this season as membership has dwindled. Only a few loyal members and we assume the attraction of Northland's beaches has been the cause. John B., our president, has been busy on various jobs around our grounds. Included are the strengthening of the water supply dam and the installation of a thorough water intake: the erection of a shower down at the camping area; the emplacement of half a dozen concrete blocks underneath the clubhouse; and finally the cleaning up of the wood pile which decorated the area for some time. We are indebted to John who has spent many man-hours on these jobs.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

The ROTOBOP challenge! Being good hosts we let them win of course! At the handing-over ceremony BOP Pres. Alan said that they hadn't won it before, and we might not see it again. How right he was. It was destroyed with their clubhouse in the fire soon afterward, which we were very sorry to hear about. The shield is to be replaced (so I hear on the grapevine) by the ROTOBOP ASHES.

The ROTOBOP Challenge day was, in my opinion, the best interclub visit we have had. Weather perfect, visitors from BOP, WOS, AOHC & HBSC, the formal part (volleyball) over the lunch, then people spread over the grounds and the lake doing their "own thing" On the lake was water skiing, rowing, canoeing, and swimming, the warm stream was well used as was the mini golf. People didn't want to go home, and I'm still not sure why they did. A good day. Waikato has suggested we make the ROTOBOP a 3-way challenge, with them. Sounds a good idea for interclub activity.

More overseas visitors: a family from New Caledonia (a visit last year, too) and a retired couple from Wales in a motor caravan, who planned to stay one night, and left after three nights.

The few of us who went to HBSC mini-rally had another excellent weekend (except for the weather - please order early for next year).

And we look forward to seeing our friends from other clubs at the Tauranga Hot Pool weekend at the end of May.

Life in your own club may be good, but I have found inter-club activities makes for more friends and enjoyments. A good summer period for ROTOTA, whose home is Geyserland Leisure Park.

ROSE CITY SUN CLUB (Inc.)

It's official! Manawatu Sunseekers Club now has a new name. To identify us as the in-city club, we have adopted the name of Rose City, Palmerston North's alternate name as an internationally recognised centre for rose trials. Despite some warnings from a few Wellington Club members, we did not have to wait a year for the change to be approved under the Incorporated Societies Act.

Club News has not felt our presence for some time. We are still alive, well, and kicking. In May we got together with the Palmerston North Club for a Sunday afternoon sauna, Wellington rally video and photo-taking session for passports. On the second and fourth weekends of each month our hot tub is available from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Some of our members have discovered the joys of rebirthing. They have spent hours floating in the tub in serene, blissful peace. The experience approximates the feeling found in floatation tanks which are currently the range in California.

We are a small club, 38 members in all categories. Members join mainly for sunbathing and swimming during lunch hours and after work in a quiet garden atmosphere close to town. A handful of us pop up from time-to-time at rallies to stir up questions about where our club is and what it does. Now that we are identified with Rose City, hopefully a number of questions will be clarified. The main query seems to involve our distinction from the Palmerston North Sun Club with whom we have a complementary relationship; in-town sunbathing complemented by nearby camping facilities at Lake Downs.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB

With the club spirit running high 1987 is progressing well. Our members made the most of the tremendous weather throughout January and the less frequent sunny days after that to live the nudist life. Not only have we taken advantage of what our own grounds provide but many of our members have supported other club's special events.

Those who went to Wanganui and Hawkes Bay came back with glowing reports of very enjoyable weekends. Congratulations to Wanganui and Hawkes Bay Sun Clubs. It is the opportunity to take part in the interclub events that puts the icing on the cake of nudist club membership.

As a way of welcoming all the new members to our club, June finished her term as social officer in grand style by organising a dance in the clubhouse with music provided by the Bill West Jazz Band, a different group than we had on the lawn during the rally; a hundred members and friends made merry. The same weekend saw the club's sports competitions that had been postponed from a previous weekend. To finish off an action packed weekend we held our A.G.M. A very positive meeting was completed in only 1¾ hours, can any other club beat that for speed? Perhaps the sunshine outside provided a powerful incentive.

Our new committee already has great ideas coming forward with Heather developing a full social programme beginning at Easter with an evening of games in the clubhouse and a pancake breakfast. In the following months there will be another dance-social, ten-pin bowling, coffee evenings and a lot more. Winter should go by very quickly with plenty of opportunities for members to get together.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB

Over the past few months our club has had quite a spruce up. The clubhouse has been painted, new wire netting erected around No.3 miniten court, extensions made the the "Village Green" barbeque area, and general tidying of the grounds by our keen new caretakers.

Many members have stayed at the club during the holiday period, including families from overseas. Impromptu games of sport, indoor bowls, cards etc have been played. The Village Green barbeque has been lit every night, and people have lingered long after the meal was over.

Group excursions from the club have included trips out to dinner, Ten Pin Bowling, Footrot Flats Leisure Park, Hot Pools at Parakai, Rainbows End, the beach etc.

One of the best outings was a boat trip on the Waitemata Harbour on the "Galilee" swimming, fishing, diving and sunbathing were the order of the day, more trips have been organised and details will be included later for trips to be run after the rally.

Our sports weekend was again dampened by rain, but the volleyball was completed, and the exciting final played between two teenage teams of A.O.H.C. they will be a formidable team by the time of the rally. Monday was a much finer day and Top Team was played between six teams. The games get zanier every year, but were finally won by the "Scorpions".

Plans are underway for the rally and ideas are rolling in to make this a unique one.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB

At the time of writing these notes it is too early to report on our planned Easter functions but the social organiser, together with her helpers, has a programme of sports, games, disco, social and champagne brunch laid on. We are certain that Canterbury sunshine will also be in abundance.

Another function we are looking forward to is the Annual Brass Monkey Ball programmed for July 25th. How about all of you nudists from near and far coming to Christchurch for an enjoyable evening with the fun-lovers.

Our membership secretary has excelled herself with the publication of a twelve page 425mm x 290mm newspaper for general distribution.

The publication under the title of "PINEGLADES - An introduction to the Canterbury Sun Club (Inc.)" features 25 photos and extensive articles; is printed on high standard paper and produced at no cost to the club because of the numerous advertisements from local firms, and because of the very considerable efforts of a local newsprint publisher who incidentally is now a member of the club. We now await eagerly the inflow of members from interested parties. For existing members the paper is required reading to remind us all that we are enjoying a great club with full amenities.

Now, in the middle of April the cool weather is beginning to be felt, but it is indeed wonderful how many fine days are spread throughout the Canterbury off-season. Sitting in sheltered groups, members continue to enjoy the social atmosphere sharing the lazy contented feeling that the warm sunshine gives to us all and then in the evenings, with the ban on fires lifted, the barbeque get-togethers finish off the happy days.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB

With summer well and truly over it's good to look back at a great nudist season at our club. The year got off to a good start by getting our new showers and laundry operating before the summer campers started arriving. The weather was excellent most of the time, and attendance at the club grounds high. The club house has been lined and our long drop toilets replaced by a more civilised device in white porcelain.

This year's interclub event, our Waitangi Hangi weekend, drew more nudists to our grounds than we've seen in a long time. The weekend featured a river boat ride, game meat feast, hangi meal, sports and organised walks.

Our club members have turned up in force to all the interclub events going on in the lower North Island. All in all, a great summer, and a good lead up to an even better one next year.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB

Weather is cooling down and rain has come at last by buckets full, which makes the grounds look green again after many hot dry months. Our trip to Ocean Beach on February 1st was a great success. About 44 gathered on the beach, swam in the warm sea and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The weather, a beautiful clear blue sky, could not have been better and the experience of nude swimming in the sea is a must for every nudist.

The Mini Rally in March was attended by many from clubs all over the North Island. The rain on Saturday stopped some sports, but the Disco got everyone in the right spirit and dancing went on into the small hours of the morning. What a pleasure it was to wake up to a fine day, starting with a Champagne Breakfast on the lawn, many old friendships were renewed and new ones made.

We have just had our A.G.M. at which a new committee was voted in, so Rapere members are once again ready to start another challenging year.
