TALKING POINT
by "Gemini"
Picture, if you will, the following. The setting is a naturist club somewhere in Britain. It is around noon on a cloudless midsummer day. The sun, just bright enough to be distinguishable from the background, shines (if that is not too forceful a term) down out of a milk-white sky. I am sitting on the clubhouse verandah, doing the crossword in the daily paper. I am suitably clothed for the climate in jeans and pullover, beneath which is my thermal underwear, I have chosen to relax on the verandah so that I can make the shelter of the clubhouse speedily when the first snowflakes start to fall. After a while I become aware of an odd rattling sound nearby. Looking up, I see Beverly, our secretary, standing beside me. The noise is her teeth chattering. She is tastefully clad in a pair of jandals (sensible) and a pair of sunglasses (ridiculous). She is so cold she has goose pimples on her goose pimples. "And just what," she enquiries in an ominous tone of voice which I recognise immediately, "do you think you're. doing?" I glance down at my paper, then up again at her. "A crossword puzzle," I reply mildly. "What's a four-letter word meaning 'undressed'?" Beverly's mouth tightens. "Stop trying to be funny. I'm referring to your clothing." "Don't you like it? I thought the purple socks went rather well with the -" "Take them off!" "But," I protest, "I haven't another pair of socks with me -" "All of it!" She is now getting quite indignant. "Remove all your clothing immediately!" I give her my most wolfish grin. "Why, Beverly! I never realised - If only you'd come to see me privately..." Poor Beverly I suppose I am being a bit cruel, but "Beverly" is a popular pastime in the club. And she asks for it, by trying to enforce compliance with a club "rule" which many of us think to be not only absurd but a downright infringement of personal liberty. Apart from the fact that the foregoing account is pure fiction and Beverly was the first name that came into my head, everything else is true. Or could be. Any attempt to dictate to freedom-loving Kiwis just when they shall and shall not wear clothes within the club, would meet with the sort of reception that was handed out to Captain Bligh on the Bounty. |
But the fact remains that in Britain, some clubs - not all, but quite a few - try to enforce a "clothes-off-at-all-times" rule, with varying degrees of insistence according to the inclinations of the committee in office at the time. Naturally, there are the usual exceptions. For the ladies at certain times. For prospective new members during their (usually) three "exploratory" visits. And during the hours of darkness. Finally, not even the most fanatical of "enforcers" has dared to suggest that clothing should be removed during the wintertime when working on club maintenance. (The outcome would be the highest mortality rate for any club on record.) But with these exceptions, in quite a few clubs one is expected to "conform" - whatever the thermometer may say. It's the children who suffer the most, As every naturist parent knows, kids brought up in a sun club atmosphere gallop around quite happily in the nude, until they reach that age when they suddenly realise that boys and girls have different parts in different places. They start wanting to cover themselves up, partly if not totally, and if they're thwarted they simply stop going to the club. As we all know, if left free to make their own decisions the children will drift back to the club in their own good time when their personal crisis is over. But why should they be denied the fellowship of the club they have enjoyed for so many years, when the wearing of a pair of swim trunks or a bikini for a short period would solve all their problems? It's not only the young who suffer, either. The aged notice the cold much more acutely (like me). If I had complied with Beverly's demands I would have been a cot case with hypothermia within the hour. In discussion I invariably take the stance, that naturism as I understand it, gives me the freedom, within the club grounds, to wear clothing or not as I see fit. If I take it into my head to stroll up Auckland's Queen Street in the nude I expect to be arrested. Conversely, if I want to sit around the club all day in a sheepskin coat I expect to be allowed to do so, without let or hindrance. If the committee decide to kick me out because I'm a nut, that's all right by me. We're all entitled to our opinions. But if I should be expelled simply for breaking an absurd "rule" which is little more than a custom, anyway, and one to which by no means all members agree, then I would start getting hot under the collar. Be grateful, Kiwis, that here in Godzone a more reasonable attitude prevails. But if you should go to Britain and visit any sun clubs, be prepared. Especially when you find out what passes for "summer" there. |

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB With the improvement of the weather we are now seeing a few more of our members out at the club grounds. Some of us have even managed to make a start on our tans. The upward swing to summer has seen members hard at work on the club grounds. The result of this hard work is certainly rewarding. We can now offer our club members, members from other clubs and overseas visitors, camping and powered sites in a park-like setting. The new ablution block and upgrading of our facilities make South Auckland Sun Club a great place to visit over the summer months. Unfortunately over the winter months our pool was flooded twice. The water is now the colour of cafe au lait. After pumping large quantities of chemicals in and almost constant attention we feel we are winning the battle against the "Gremlins" and hope to have a crystal clear pool by the open weekend. A social evening was held at a member's house in September, where club members were given the opportunity to watch the video "Educating Julie". An interesting film of nudism in the 80's in Europe. We have started the summer rolling by holding a Country & Western night (just to get folks in the mood for the rally). A very successful night for the club with over 60 people attending. All evening there were happy faces, a good time was had by all. Weather permitting we will hold a combined Guy Fawkes night and sausage sizzle on November 9th. We also hope to hold a social function at the club grounds during the Christmas/New Year period for all those not attending the rally. As more people become aware of the warm weather, we are getting an increase in membership. We have people new to the nudist movement applying for the first time, members transferring from other clubs, past members returning and also the births of two new babies to existing family members. By the time this goes to print the festive season will be upon us. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all other clubs a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. To all those travelling to the rally we wish you a happy and safe journey. |

A Unique Situation In Our Naturist World
Robbert Broekstra
PROVINCE OF ANDALUCIA Where will you find 3 naturist places within a 7-kilometre range? These 3 clubs are about 100 kilometres from the city of Almena and 220 kilometres south of Alicante, near the towns of Garrucha and Vera. We will start with the smallest one 'LA ROZAS' located about 3 kilometres from the sea, it is run by Kevin & Denise Hefferman who are an English couple. The mansion they bought dates back to 1910 and used to belong to the director of the local silver mines, even generalissimo Franco visited this grand place, but it was deserted many years ago and more or less left as a ruin. They have turned it into a naturist paradise, and have worked like horses, and in a couple of years have achieved quite a bit. They are turning large rooms into studios. The mansion itself is like a museum. You will agree with me when you enter the great hall with many statues. What has this place to offer? A small but very nice swimming pool, a mini tennis court, self catering studios, half board (full English breakfast and evening meal), a supermarket, bar and restaurant. The grounds itself are small but there is enough room for a number of caravans and tents, either in the shade or sun. Don't forget it gets very hot easily up to 35 degrees, even in September so don't forget your suntan oil. Kevin is working now on a large barbecue and finishing the rest of the studios. On the grounds you will find a couple of fountains and you can visit Kevin and Denise all year round. If enough people are interested in the old silver mines, Kevin will take you around for a guided tour. Upon the question if he will ever build bungalows and apartments in the future he said NO, I want to live in peace and do not like headaches, I want to keep it small, like a family atmosphere. We found Kevin and Denise a very hospitable couple, always ready to help and answer your questions, a good example of what a naturist couple should be like. If you want more information you may write to Kevin and Denise Hefferman CAMPING LAS ROZAS LAS HERRERIAS ... CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA ALMERIA (ESPANA). Tell them you got the address from Robbert and Mona.

Las Palmeras This club second in size is the oldest in Spain and thus the first naturist camping, it's 1km from the sea, 7 years old and is run by a German couple, Frederick and Hilde. It lies within walking distance from the village of Garrucha and 3 kilometres from Vera Playa (naturist beach). The grounds have plenty of space for tents and caravans and you may rent an apartment if you wish. There is lots of shade as you will find plenty of palm trees, thus the name Las Palmeras. You will find a restaurant, bar, a supermarket and 2 swimming pools, one covered for the somewhat cooler winter days, however even in October or November you will get warm temperatures between lOam and 5pm. We visited this place in September and as most kids were back at school, it was quiet everywhere, a good place to rest and relax. Vera Playa Vera Playa is Spain's largest naturist resort and it has big plans for the next 15 years. It's open all year round and during our stay we witnessed the extension of the nude beach from 400 metres to 750 metres. Plans are to build a hotel, 60 bungalows and 30 apartments, these will be up for sale in due course. What will you find at the moment? 47 lovely apartments with terraces overlooking the sea, in the background against the mountains you will see the village of Mojacar, at night it's all lit up like sparkling jewels in the sun. The camping site has two parts, one for textile people, the other (the larger one) for naturists. The camping site has 200 places for tents and caravans and could use some more shade in the form of trees, but they are working on it very hard, Sea temperatures are warm even in September 27 degrees easily. The nearest airport is that of Almeria about 100 kilometres from Vera Playa. The nearest towns for size are Garrucha and Vera, the latter known for its bullfights and fiestas. If you take a package tour you will get a free bicycle for 6 hours a week, which is very useful in the area as you can visit the other two naturist spots as well, as they are all located within a 7 kilometre range. Of course if you want to stay the whole winter at Vera Playa and escape the cold winters in your own country, you may park your caravan at the camping grounds. The manager Mr Assacio and his wife showed us all around and stated that very little rain falls in that area, if it rains longer than 2 hours, you will get your money back, I wonder if that also counts during the low season? The grounds are very large, but a lot has been done and has to be done, but already now it's shown itself as something of importance in our naturist world. |
THE NETWORK - "Naturists talking to naturists"
by Veal Johnson
Once or twice a year we like to inform naturists around the world of our existence through the nudist press. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the nudist publications of the world for their help and cooperation in getting the word out to you, the nudists of the world. THE NETWORK was formed by my wife, Leanna, and I along with the cooperation of Don and Pauline Cleavin in England in 1979. What began as a small (10 members) "pen-pal" club of naturists has mushroomed into a worldwide communications organization dedicated to one thing, direct personal contact between all of the world's naturists. Today we have over 750 members representing 29 countries and are the largest such organization in the world. While the predominant form of communication still remains the letter (and sometimes photo exchange) between members, we have expanded into a computer network which, hopefully, will someday enable nudists all over the world to communicate with each other via home computer. Other NETWORK members have exchanged tape cassettes, phone calls, videotapes and even visits to each other. In fact, as a result of the increasing number of exchange visits, we created a Bed and Breakfast Registry as an adjunct to THE NETWORK. All of these services are designed to bring to life our motto: "Naturists talking to naturists". Here are some comments from current THE NETWORK members: Becky Ragsdale from Longmont CO. writes: "Imagine our excitement to find letters from Belgium and Australia in our box on the same day! This is great!!" Mary Jane and Frank Johnson of Pequot Lakes, MN. says: "What a wonderful idea THE NETWORK is. It can do much to cement relations with people worldwide." Michael Murray, Berks England writes: "How wonderful it is to write and receive letters from fellow naturists all over the world," Pat Hayes from Douglas, WY writes: "I feel I have made some very good friends and hope someday I will be able to meet them all. I am going out of state next week and I will have the opportunity to meet one of my nude pen-pals. I am very excited about it." Bruce Butcher of Narwee, Australia says: "It is truly wonderful to have an organisation such as THE NETWORK where one naturist can correspond with another naturist in another part of the globe and feel as though they are only in the next town. It certainly helps the world seem a little bit smaller." Johannes and Rosemarie Wiese of Braunschweig, West Germany write: "NETWORKERS are apparently not strangers to each other. It turns out that most naturist pen-pals are interested in contacting people they have written to." |
So what does it cost to join THE NETWORK? The same thing it did in 1979 - nothing, except your time and postage. To join THE NETWORK send us a written request to be included in 'THE NETWORK along with 5 International Reply Coupons which have been postmarked by your local post office, We will send you a copy of the latest directory and include you in the next issue. We will also include instructions on how to subscribe to our semi-annual newsletter, our Premium Membership Plan, the computer network and the Bed and Breakfast Registry. Send your request to join to: Veal and Leanna Johnson One final word, THE NETWORK is not a swingers contact list or lonely hearts club. If either of these are your primary interest please contact one of the many organizations which cater to those interests and not THE NETWORK. |

SOMEONE ELSE by Wally Wisdom The association saddened to learn of the passing on this week of the association's most valuable member Someone Else. Someone Else's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Someone has been with the association since it first started and did far more work than any normal person's share of the world. Whenever there was a job to do, a function to attend, funds to be raised, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's lips. "let someone else do it". It was common knowledge that someone else was one of the largest contributors of time to the association; whenever there was a volunteer. Someone else was a wonderful person sometimes appearing superhuman, but a person can only do so much, Now it is realized, everyone expects too much. Someone else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to do the things someone else did? When you are asked to help, remember WE CANNOT DEPEND ON SOMEONE ELSE ANY MORE, WHY NOT VOLUNTEER NOW: |

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
33rd Annual National Nudist Council Convention Comes Out Against Child Pornography
On the issue of the widespread problem of Child Pornography, the Board of Directors of the American N.N.C. gained unanimous approval by the attending membership to undertake a vigorous campaign against it. This course of action was mandated by the passage of a formal resolution stating our right to participate in the law making process itself; and by the establishment of the National Nudist Council Lobbying Committee Against Child Pornography. The complete wordings are to be found at the end of this article. As parents ourselves, nudists are concerned about the widespread commercial exploitation of children in an erotic and violent manner. We do not condone such things in our own clubs, and are swift in banishing those who would attempt such behaviour from our facilities, Why then does society as a whole allow this to continue? It is our intention to become actively involved on a national level to put an end to such exploitation. At the same time however, we will strive to preserve the rights of individual nudists and the nudist media from being eroded by over-reactive legislation intended to deal with this problem. As a case in point, a recently enacted Ohio law was formulated in such a way as to open the possibility that a parent photographing their own child in an innocent state of simple nudity could face prosecution for a second-degree felony. While we do not believe that the Ohio lawmakers really wanted to outlaw the innocent nude photos that are found in many family albums, even among non-nudists, this does illustrate the effect of a hasty effort to deal with a truly serious problem. To an extent, nudists are partially to blame for such over-reaction, for while our movement in the United States is more than 50 years old, we have done very little to communicate with society as a whole, and much less with our legislative representatives. |
As a consequence, various myths have arisen about us; the two extremes being that we are ultra-moral, self-denying health faddists; the other being that we are hedonistic and promiscuous, holding open and perverted orgies in our camps. Neither view, as we ourselves know, is true, and members of the media who have been to our facilities often describe our activities as being no different from the typical weekend outing enjoyed by millions of other families, except for the lack of clothing. That our social practice is innocent, wholesome, and beneficial to both adults and children has not only been proven by decades of participation; but also more recently through scientific studies by those in the fields of Social Sciences and Psychology. But again, because of our lack of communication with society, we face the possibility of being viewed as no different from the same perverts who commercially exploit children, and must be concerned that laws could be made which will threaten the existence of our clubs. The NNC Lobbying Committee Against Child Pornography, consisting of the Board of Directors and any interested individuals from our nationwide membership, wishes to offer our assistance to our legislators on this problem, and to inform them of the existence of our natural, innocent, wholesome, and family oriented practice; so that in their wisdom they may write laws which effectively deal with the problems at hand but at the same time protect the rights of our members and the nudist media. Initially, this effort will begin with a mailing campaign such as the release of this article; as the committee attracts more participants across the nation, we will strive to make personal contact with our representatives in the local, state, and Congressional bodies of law. In this effort, we will not rest until the problem has been dealt with, and those responsible prosecuted; from our membership we ask for their support and even more importantly, their active participation in this cause; and from our legislators, we ask for open- mindedness, fairness, and a willingness to communicate with us, Together we will ultimately eradicate this pestilence, to the benefit of all society. |

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, In reply to: "Our magazine a personal opinion" New Zealand Naturist No. 113 - June 1985. By the presentation of the motion at the Annual Meeting it was stated that: 1. The "Playboy" like cover and centre fold girls in our magazine have a killing effect of the NZ naturist movement by attracting the wrong public and frightening off the would be naturists, who do not like to be associated with a sex magazine. 2. The material published in the magazine is very poor for the same reason. Genuine naturists or nudists do not want to be associated with a sex movement. So they do not want to have their holiday photos and stories published in a magazine which "tries to compete with Playboy, Penthouse and similar publications" (as Doug Cousins stated in his article). Naturists probably do not bother about Playboy type magazines, they might even like them. But being associated with a Playboy or Penthouse way of life is another thing. If the bigger sale is necessary to keep the magazine up, then costs can be cut by leaving out the pin-up girls and full colour photos. Using cheaper paper would not harm either. The "New Zealand Naturist" magazine should be a mirror of the naturist way of life. Whatever that might be it should never be related to sex. Although the last edition was remarkably "clean" with good club related articles and photos, the intention of Doug Cousins - as he stated in his article - does not guarantee that the magazine will stop its continuous pollution of the words "naturist" and "nudist". New Zealand and Australian nudists - if the future of the nudist movement goes to your heart, do something about it. Albert Wayers, Dear Sir, I was happily surprised to find an issue of NZ Naturist on the news agent's shelf and proceeded to eagerly look through the magazine. I support alternative media, including nudist publications. |
I believe that people should be exposed to nude bodies and desensitised to the sight of real human bodies, rather than the contrived and stereo-typed physiques that we are confronted with in the mass media. However, I was alarmed and outright disgusted when I saw your centrefold and noticed that the cover and back of your magazine also featured a female nude. These women were presented pornographically - the way the mass media also portray women, as sex objects. You contradict yourself. On the one hand, you advocate nudity and a relaxed attitude to one's body whilst on the other hand, you pornographically represent women as sex objects, and their bodies are judged on the socially defined scale of beauty. If you publish these type of photos for pleasure, I suggest you question a few more of your attitudes. You are by no means as "alternative" and "free and easy" as you may think you are. If it is to increase the interest value of your magazine, I think it is low and common. I had hoped that a magazine as supposedly "alternative" as yours, would not resort to an exploitative and degrading presentation of women. My concept of nudity is that the human body be accepted and appreciated for what it is, and that we stop idolizing young, and mostly female bodies. They are not the reality. We are exposed to enough unrealistic images in the media. All of them serving to supply populations with unnecessary inferiority complexes, because they cannot live up to the image. NZ Naturist is potentially a good magazine. Yours sincerely,
N.B. I understand it is editorial policy to publish all letters. I therefore expect that this letter be published in full and complete as written. Thank you. I also hope it generates thought on your behalf causing an end to your hypocrisy.
We are a naturist magazine, the word naturist meaning a person who practices nudism. We do not consider any of our photos to be pornographic. |
In fact we screen our photos for that reason, and also for quality. This magazine is run by four people, two men and two women, all of whom have families. We are not ashamed to show our children this magazine. I would not consider the photos of the girls to be sex objects. They do have nice figures but not the way you imply. These girls are models but not anything to rave over. Our photos are based on people in general not a certain type, class or creed. The "pornography" is not in the magazine, but in your mind. Sue Hurley Dear Sir, I would like a letter exchange with a female member of your Federation. I am interested in exchanging stamps, ideas, post cards, pictures but after all a good friendship and understanding. I thank you very much. Edwin Barrios Dear Sir, My comments (No. 112 March 85) were made in ignorance of the TRUE, unbiased picture of nudism. My previous associations were full of prejudiced people, intent on criticising others rather than a "loving one another" approach. I apologise to all those who were offended by those remarks. I agree entirely with Mr Saunders (No. 114, reply). I define nudism/naturism as being for all, regardless of sexual preferences. I hope this will be the end of the matter! As the Bullington's (USA) have moved house, send any letters to me at PO. Box 62, Hamilton Hill 6163. W. Aust, and they will be posted on to them. Yours for nudism, D. J. Ward |

Dear Sir, I, too, have been concerned at the contents of the Naturist. I would rather see more 'average family doing everyday things' rather than girlie photos, and more club photos. Queries to the magazine were a long time being answered, and photos sent in of good quality, ignored. I have heard a number of comments in favour of printing location and club with each photo, as background often shows details of club grounds. I would like very much to have two cameras, to photograph both in colour and black & white - I have one good camera, and on a very limited income cannot afford to take all the photos I would like, any suggestions? The quality of my work is reasonable, as you have already seen. WE must help OUR magazine as you say, but I am trying against slow communication and back-up of resources (money!) More local club, less overseas 'girlie', identify locality of photos, and credit photographers (we need encouragement, amongst other things!) Yours in nudism,
Dear GM-In answer to your first paragraph I will repeat a saying I have said since being editor and that is; we can't print what we haven't got. |
I think a lot of members think the Naturist is a large team of people who do nothing but write articles and take photos for the magazine. This is not so, I as editor have the services of two helpers and the business manager, we only work on the magazine in our spare time (we don't get paid for our work). My own job (I am self-employed) involves me for 12 hours a day 5 days a week and sometimes in the weekend also. We all have limited time to give to the Naturist and rely totally on nudists throughout New Zealand to supply us with what we publish, when they don't supply sufficient material for an issue we must fall back on overseas suppliers. You could say that NZ nudists get the magazine they deserve. The photos we published of yours were suitable to illustrate the articles concerned but would not have stood up to being enlarged to full page reproduction - this is due to a few things mainly contrast, sharpness and subject i.e. the photos need to centre on a very particular person or happening (see photo p.3/113). As far as crediting photos with captions is concerned photos in articles obviously relate to those articles and other photos are there to illustrate the nudist way of life to the public (who buy the majority of the magazines) often I have no idea where the photos were taken so for uniformity and clarity it is better - we feel - not to caption any than just a few. Thank you for your support of the magazine and I hope this answers some of your queries. Graeme Brown |
Dear Sir, I am setting up a pen friendship scheme for naturists, vegetarians, those interested in complementary (alternative) medicine, and natural living. Through the pages of your journal, may I invite any interested readers to contact me for free inclusion in the scheme until it becomes established. Ultimately, I hope that the project will result in the building up of worldwide contacts between like-minded people. Initially, however, participants are in Britain and Western Europe. Those who wish to be included in the first lists are invited to send to me their personal details, details of their interests and the types of people they wish to contact. All information will only be divulged to other bona fide members of the scheme. If an International Money Order for return postage is included, each person will receive details of other participants. My family and I are members of the Central Council for British Naturism, and active club members.
