SOUTHERN SUN

Greetings and salutations from the deep south. We down here wish to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year, belated as it might be. We had a brilliant time over the Christmas/New Year period and for the most part excellent weather as well. Ray, Doreen and Peter got together one weekend and laid down a golf course which proved to be the most popular past time for all the men anyway, and entertaining for the women. The trophy for the biggest dud shot must go to David for his shot that bounced off two trees and ended up in the kitchen. A great pull put him in perfect position for only a further 12 strokes to sink it. Not bad for a par three hole.

We had about seven families staying at the club over the period. Unfortunately the fish were also on holiday, but all was not lost as a couple of visitors from the Orchard Club in Dunedin taught us all to catch and cook eels. Hence the smoker was used for the first time with one trout and the eels as well. They were delicious. The New Year's Eve social was a roaring success with the theme being the rock and roll era.

Everybody came along in the sixties gear even complete to pink and purple bobby socks. The winners were Steve and Marnie. Marnie looked all sweet and innocent in her college gear, and Steve, a right hoon in jeans and leathers, even going as far as shaving his beard. Not for long though, it was starting to grow the next day.

Volleyball score

The swimming pool was much in demand, everyone taking the occasional swim every hour or so, then the water volley ball was a very popular past time as well, with the women joining in and everybody having a great time of it. We were going to play water polo, but we couldn't find a way to stop the horses from drowning.

The community dinners were once again enjoyed by all with everybody joining together for the first meal of the New Year which was eaten in 330 temperatures, which saw everybody heading for the shade even before the sweet was served.

On the third we all trekked down to the Riverton Carnival where Jim and his band were backing Billy T. James. It was a good show and B.T.J. entertaining us in his usual fashion. Before the show we were all down at the sea shore collecting mussels, We gathered a bucket full between waves, took them back to the club, battered them up and ate a late night supper.

These were the outstanding features of the holiday. We did all the other usual but fun things like miniten and the 20-over cricket matches are becoming legendary down our way with the ball almost having to be carried up to the batter, the fields-people are fairly relaxed, anything from sleeping in the sun to drinking tea in the pavilion, but it's all good fun anyway.

Volleyball score

That's about all for the holiday. On the 7th we all took off on our separate ways, but a month later, 9th and 10th of February 1985, we met up at Dunedin for the annual sports weekend held between the Orchard Sun Club and the Southern Sun and Health Club, for the Aparima Trophy. This trophy was donated by one of the Southern Sun Club members to be competed for twice a year by members of both clubs. Owing to the high cost of petrol these days, it was decided to hold this competition once a year on the weekend closest to New Zealand Day, so sometimes it works out that we get a three day weekend for this competition. Anyway, 13 of us from Southern met the Orchard members on the field of battle on Saturday afternoon to compete in miniten, volley ball, table tennis, darts, horse shoes, and throwing the gumboot, a most difficult item to get sailing through the air. Seems the women were pretty good at this but then they have plenty of practice at throwing odd things - pots, pans, sauce bottles and the usual rolling pin. The competition was fierce and furious, only broken by the competitors falling down laughing all the time, and this we feel is what it's all about. A load of laughs and a good time. Anyways we lost miserably (about 32 points) but very pleased to see the Orchard win it again, but Orchard beware, we will take it back with us next year, this is a promise. A social lasting into the wee small hours was held on Saturday night and by the looks of the eyes the next morning everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

On the Sunday night a sauna and spa was the perfect ending to a brilliant weekend and even the weather was kind to us in Dunedin for a change.

I even overhead a comment from an Orchard member (now exiled to Christchurch) to the effect that "being naked at 6pm in Dunedin was unheard of", but there he was naked as a jaybird.

Well, that was it, the holidays are over, the sports weekend has been and gone, daylight saving will be gone soon and that will be it - another nine months before the sun shines again.

GEYSERLAND LEISURE PARK LTD

By now most of you will be aware of the area known as Geyserland Leisure Park, also the associated club; Rotota Sun Club Inc. There are a few of you out there who have, by way of becoming Beneficiaries, made it possible for the purchase of the land, and therefore the initial beginnings of a central nudist facility. Unfortunately this is all it has been - an initial beginning. The support hoped for from the movement as a whole was not forthcoming, and the Trust: Company, with the amount of support given was only able to purchase the land (with help from elsewhere).

Volleyball score

As a few of you are aware the Rotota Sun Club has stepped in and bailed the company out of a tricky financial situation. Because of this we, the Directors, are now able to once again consider development of the area, to the advantage of the movement as a whole. For those of you who have visited the area, or are beneficiaries, the area previously leased by the Rotota Sun Club is now known as Stage One of development. Very basic as yet, but even this development has cost the CLUB a lot of Time, Effort and Finance.

We feel that those who have visited, and perhaps stayed on these grounds will agree about the potential of the area. Admittedly the facilities need to be upgraded and increased; and it is to this end we would like to have available for next season possibly toilet, shower block and kitchen facilities.

Volleyball score

Understandably we need to have an overall plan of the area before we can begin. The club has already sent out a letter, from the Directors to this effect - asking for HELP in this area. Where are all you budding landscapers etc.

As we have already pointed out the area being developed is for the benefit of the movement as a whole. But, and its a big but, we cannot even think of going much further ahead without the support of the People who make up the movement. The type of support most needed at this stage is financial.

We know by the reaction we have had from those of you who have visited that it is a viable proposition. So how about it fellow nudists - help show us that we are heading in the right direction. Contact one of the following Directors and invest in the promotion of the future of nudism in New Zealand.

OUR MAGAZINE - A PERSONAL OPINION

By Doug Cousins

At this year's Annual Meeting of the Wellington Club a motion was submitted "That this Club does not support the 'New Zealand Naturist' magazine". Fortunately for the movement the motion was lost but the fact that about a third of the 100 plus members present voted for the motion raises the interesting point that there are growing numbers of members concerned at the content of our magazine. This article presents the comments of the principle speaker against the motion, but adapted to deal with the wider aspects of the Clubs generally rather than just Wellington.

Firstly, it should be mentioned that our magazine is one of the very few naturist magazines left in the world. It is probably the only one run by nudists for nudists with the national association as its alma mater. For this reason alone it is vital that we keep it going.

There are two main answers to objections to the content of our magazine. These are:

1. Competition: The attraction of Playboy, Penthouse and similar publications makes it difficult for our magazine to maintain sales UNLESS there is something in the magazine that will similarly attract. That is the prime reason why our magazine features so many photos of girls, and in colour. This matter is made worse by so many booksellers placing our magazine on the same shelves alongside these other soft, and not so soft, porn publications.

2. An Editor can only publish WHAT HE RECEIVES. If YOU, the members of the Clubs, do not send in sufficient material for publication, what does the Editor have available? If our magazine is failing in the quality YOU want, YOU must accept at least part of the blame. Surely there are plenty of members in our Clubs who can write articles. If you do not have a camera or enough photo know-how, at least you can tell the Official Photographer of your Club that you are willing to appear in photos sent in for publication.

Does every Club have an Official Photographer, and is it made plain to each incumbent that his duties MUST include the provision of adequate photos for the magazine? I doubt it! It must mean that whoever gets the job needs at least two cameras of reasonable quality - one for colour for Club records etc. and one for black and white for the magazine.

At the Tolaga Bay Rally the Editor commented on the need for more photos and articles. It is thus up to ALL CLUB members to do something about it. More NZ photos and articles mean more kiwis and thus there is less need for overseas material. There is, however, one drawback. This is the fact that so little seems to happen at most Clubs on a normal summer Sunday. It would help if there is a variety of sport, social and other activities.

Some members might want to ask me what has been happening that could provide the basis of stories (apart from Club reports, which are always too short). Some thoughts come to mind.

1. Northern Sunseekers. I recall they have had trips to the Bay of Islands, and I have seen water skiing photos. An excellent theme for publicity.

2. North Shore. After the last Rally in Auckland they held a spit roast. With their permission I took photos. Releases for my Club members were obtained quickly. I am still waiting for releases and a story about the host Club.

3. AOHC. Every year they have a sports weekend at the end of January with other Clubs being invited along. I can't recall a proper story nor photos in the magazine about these events.

4. South Auckland. They had serious flooding a few years ago and have been busy installing facilities for camping. What has appeared in the magazine about these?

5. BOP, Southern. Both Clubs obtained loans from the Percy Cousins Trust for sealed games courts. I have seen nothing in the magazine about these.

6. Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North and other Clubs. They all have the odd beach trip annually. No publicity and the magazine wants beach photos and stories to help the NZNF push for a formal change of law to allow free beaches.

7. Wanganui. After the Palmerston North Rally they held a hangi. I didn't see this in the magazine.

8. Manawatu. I can't recall seeing anything published about their spa pool complex.

9. Canterbury. They now have a very nice, well landscaped barbecue area, a 3 pool complex for the children and a spa and sauna block. Nothing so far in the magazine about these.

10. Orchard. There was a lot of publicity following the Abbotsford slip, but what has appeared since on the restoration? They have been busy installing camping facilities too.

11. Many years ago members staying in the old clubhouse at Wellington saw strange lights around the swimming pool one evening. It turned out to be neighbours skinny dipping after dark. The point is that it was worked up into a nice little amusing story that was published. Surely there are lots of amusing incidents in the Clubs that can be made into stories, however short.

Does the above prick a few consciences? I trust it does and that in the future there will be a steady flow of photos and articles for the magazine. I did say "steady flow". Do not let us have a heavy flood all at once and then nothing more in the future. The magazine is a continuing project for all of us.

Paras one to 10 above could readily have provided photos for the magazine had somebody thought about it and somebody was there expressly for the purpose. Did anybody even THINK of that? That's the point - think. Remember the insult card "THINK - it might be a new experience". As will be apparent it takes organising to get what is required, both articles and photos. An example will help tell the story. Whenever there is to be a concert, such as at Rallies, I like to attend a rehearsal so that when the final production is staged I know what to be ready for with my cameras.

Many Club members are crying out for more CLUB photos. YOU can supply them, but I also have a suggestion to add. The magazine has been making profits, which have been loaned to the Percy Cousins Trust. Why cannot these profits be ploughed back into improving the magazine (as long as YOU send in the photos and articles)? My suggestion is an additional four pages mainly of Club photos. This way the Editor still has his photos of girls, and the Clubs have more Club photos. But it will only be practical IF the Clubs respond with those photos and articles.

Many years ago there were a number of articles about various Clubs illustrated by photos taken by myself. If any Club is without sufficiently experienced photographers I would like to say that I am still available to help. Just ask and I will see what I can do about a visit one summer.

If any budding photographers would like some advice on their efforts to obtain suitable photos for the magazine they are welcome to send them to me and I will try to help. Just address your envelope to me care of the Wellington Club, Box 2854, Wellington. Sample proofs and the actual negatives will assist me to get a better idea of what you have been doing wrong if there is anything wrong.

For all I have written above I think that the movement will see what I am trying to get at - that we must all HELP the magazine, not send it to Coventry. It is OUR magazine, we are getting something out of it, but are we putting anything back into it? It is over to the Clubs and Club members, as well as other readers, to help. Go to it, and good luck.

From Around the World

BEACH TRAVEL CLUB. Inc.

Europe is making a fortune in tourism in an area that the State of Florida is refusing to even acknowledge. In fact, it would appear that Florida politicians are afraid to address it.

The French Government, in 1969, began to aggressively promote it and provide financial support to develop it, and Spain's government has followed suit.

The government of Greece once acknowledged it, then banned it. When the resulting loss in revenue was realised, the Greek government quickly reversed its position in an effort to regain some of the money it was losing to other European nations.

In Yugoslavia it is a philosophy and a $150,000,000/year industry as well. A Yugoslavian tourist official recently stated, "Our tourist business is rapidly increasing because we give the tourists what they want".

Does Florida?

No Florida had a good start with about 15 secluded unofficial clothing optional beaches scattered around its coast, many of which had been used as clothing optional sites for over 30 years. While they were little known and used primarily by local Floridians, they gained acceptance as clothing optional sites locally, and their popularity was increasing with tourists, particularly since the publication of several international naturist travel guides with directions to many of the secluded beaches.

Florida officials, apparently seeking to promote their own political careers and impose their values on the citizens of and visitors to Florida, are seeking out and arresting naturists on Florida's clothing optional beaches. While this is in direct violation of the protection provided by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, it is also a waste of money and manpower and very poor public relations for the Florida tourist industry, as far as naturist tourism is concerned, and the word is out in Europe about Florida's beaches.

By the way, the island of Jamaica, as well as several other Caribbean islands, is developing a sizable tourist market from North American naturists who are flocking to Caribbean beaches where governments acknowledge the freedom of choice of a lifestyle. Jamaica has numerous designated clothing optional beaches where visitors can enjoy the warm sun and sea free of bathing suits. Many of the Caribbean Islands have three or more of these beaches and Guadeloupe has declared many of its beaches clothing optional. All of these Islands are making a bid for a share of the European and North American naturist tourist market.

The Beach Travel Club, a family oriented group of Tampa Bay Area naturists, has published a "Fact Book" which describes the current situation in Europe and the Caribbean and discusses the economic potential of naturist tourism for Florida. Other topics covered include the civil rights issues, environmental concerns and information on how you can get involved in this rapidly growing movement. Naturism's "Fact Book" is available in paperback from the Beach Travel Club, Inc., P.O. Box 725, Tarpon Springs, Florida 34286-0725. Please send $2.00 postage and handling.

WELLINGTON'S SUMMER HIGHLIGHT

Volleyball score

What do you get when you combine hot sunny weather, congenial company by the score, first rate sportsmanship, an active and varied programme well organised and conducted? The answer is a Wellington Mini-Rally - and that is just what we had over the long Anniversary Weekend in January this year. It could hardly have been better weather-wise and every otherwise. Saturday saw the pool thoroughly thrashed as the thermometer soured to 31° with Sunday not far behind at 29°. Monday was overcast with light rain briefly morning and evening, but it was still warm enough for "club uniform" at 24°.

Visitors started arriving midday Friday and during the evening they came to the clubhouse for a welcome cuppa. This set the tone for the rest of the weekend. They came from Manawatu Sunseekers, Wanganui, Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty Sun Clubs and briefly an American couple. There were 28 adult visitors in camp with sundry children and also some day visitors. We were most disappointed that all clubs in the region were not represented. Maybe this little story will help encourage them all to come next time.

Saturday was miniten day - singles, doubles, both men, women and mixed. Teams were made up by drawing names from the hat. But as all winners turned out to be local members it was apparent that their standard of play had the edge on the visitors due to constant play on sealed courts rather than on grass. But it was all good fun and the sportsmanship could not be faulted.

Saturday evening started with many people barbecuing at the club's own barbecue. Then came the evening social in the clubhouse. Social Officer Bevan kept them all happy, rounding off a pleasant evening with a very burlesque version of our own male Can Can from the Tolaga Bay Rally.

Bright and early Sunday - 7 am. to be precise - the Wanganui President and his wife were on the miniten court - but where were their opponents??? 20 minutes later this couple were found still snug in bed! That morning many people had a look over Bob's converted bus. It was magnificent! He was so happy his few days' stay stretched into 6 weeks!

Volleyball score

The same morning saw a display of hobbies and crafts on the main lawn. There were paintings, photos, pottery, bone carving, knitting and similar sewing work from various members. It was a pleasant break from all the sport, and it was good of some visitors in bringing along their handiwork.

The afternoon started with a Top Team competition, similar to the TV Top Town. This was a lot of fun and cooling with water all over the place. Most teams included the youngsters but some oldies found a youthful zest to have a go. Naturally there were lots of amused spectators. Later on there was some volleyball.

Throughout the afternoon a small group of members was busy in the kitchen and around the barbecue. Their efforts came to fruition in the evening with yet another Wellington spit roast. Over 150 people feasted their hearts out on lovely roast lamb and veal, with barbecued chops and sausages and a variety of vegetables etc. This was rounded off with melon and cut up whole pineapples plus coffee. Nobody could grumble at the small charge for that lot, made so much more pleasant by everybody being so happy. After the food, there was dancing on the lawn until quite late, with somebody on request even dancing on a table!

Monday morning was the junior sports; table tennis in the clubhouse, but due to that little rain the outdoor sports were confined to miniten. A first class display of excellent play was shown on both the singles and doubles semi-finals and finals. Well done juniors, you are a credit to the Club. At a farewell morning tea the Wanganui President invited us all to his club for a hangi and sports weekend in February.

Most visitors packed up and left for home by midday but there were still a few left to join the local members at the barbecue that evening. Fortunately it was not until we were on the drive home that heavy rain, thunder and lightening fell down on us. A truly memorable weekend for everyone - and did we hear somebody suggesting we do it again???

The thanks to all go to President June, Social Officer Bevan and all their helpers in making this weekend such a successful event in every way.

ANNUAL REPORT 1984

from ANF President Mary Weston

Fellow delegates - my second Annual Report to you as President of the Australian Nudist Federation, is given with much pleasure.

An excellent 15th ANF Convention and Rally hosted by Tindo Nudist Club commenced what has been a pleasing year for the ANF.

The presence of an International Federation representative at the 15th meeting, where positive expansion of the supporter's role within the ANF structure was debated and adopted, the election of a capable and complete Executive and Officer team, successful YNOA participation, sportsmanlike competition during Rally - all set the scene for the year just completed. A year of co-operation, friendship, positiveness and harmony - and it was.

Reciprocal communication between ANF with the New Zealand Nudist Federation, the American Sunbathing Association, and the International Naturist Federation were sustained and beneficial. New clubs have been formed, and it is hoped they will grow from strength to strength.

Well established clubs celebrated 21st and 25th anniversaries. Successful free beach action for legal status occurred in South Australia and Western Australia - unfortunately Queensland still lags behind in this area.

During my three and a half months overseas the ANF was most fortunate in having all business continue without delay due to the untiring efforts of Secretary Lee Lelliott and Treasurer Irene Plumridge, to both of these ladies I record here sincere appreciation.

The one great personal disappointment of 1983 was my inability - due to unexpected illness - to attend INF Congress in Spain. However, alternative delegation arrangements were hastily made, thanks to assistance of INF President Alan McCombe and CCBN delegate Jim Christopherson. This report will follow later in our Meeting.

During 1983 the ANF had a satisfying year towards further progress for national and international nudism. However, our opposition is ever present, even as this report is written, continuing action is taking place to endeavour to change Government decision regarding the legal free beaches in Victoria - so we have to be vigilant at all times.

Also, we must address ourselves to the slow but sure general decrease in club membership, to establish what has to be done to reverse this trend. Organised nudism depends solely on the clubs, thus the efforts of clubs to create an attractive and well structured nudist recreation-social atmosphere, and place that families and friends want to visit and enjoy; with the national federation backed up by the world federation right there to achieve this goal ... this challenge we face. And face it we surely are doing now, but it is my belief that greater effort is required if we are to grow as we should. My hope is that brighter prospects will emerge from our 16th Annual Convention Meeting this year.

In the words of Frans Mollaert, INF Honorary President, speaking to the 19th INF Congress in Spain, on the future of organised naturism, "Let us look ahead into the future and not dwell on battles lost or won in the past. On the solid basis of our clubs, with the federations around them, let us by the catalyst of our vast movement..."

CLUB NEWS

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

Looking back over the past two and a half months since the last club news, we seem to have been very sports orientated in our activities. On Waitangi Day a group from the club took to the hills and went tramping for a day in Auckland's Waitakeres. Interspersed with the tramping was a quiet period lazing by a very cold stream until the passing walkers got too numerous and we had to resort to clothing again - if you heard any reports of streakers in the bush it was probably us.

We were pleased to enjoy the hospitality of South Auckland and North Shore Club for their sports days in February and March, apart from one shower the weather behaved itself for both events.

Our own sports day on 10th March was preceded by some hurried activity around our club house and grounds, as various members worked on the netting around the miniten court, installed a new vanity unit with two washbasins in our ablutions area, and painted the ablutions area floor. It was great to see our club house and grounds looking so good in time to welcome around one hundred people on a day that couldn't have been bettered as far as the weather went. We would like to thank everybody for coming along and hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we enjoyed having you with us.

Later in March, we entered a team in the "Round the Bays" run, unfortunately, our original team was depleted by an unforeseen holiday for one person and unforeseen and unwanted illness for another, so only three people set out on the 10.5 kilometre journey around Auckland's waterfront. Before you ask, we weren't running in club uniform!

On the last Sunday in March we held an informal sports day, holding competitions in miniten and table tennis - both won by our Club President! Despite this, everybody enjoyed themselves so much we will be making this a monthly event on the last Sunday retreating inside to indoor bowls and table tennis when rain stops play outside.

Looking ahead to the colder weather, we shall be taking advantage of the evenings organised by Free Beach Group and North Shore Sun Club to keep our membership active and in touch with events during the otherwise "clothing essential" season.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

Hi from sunny Bay of Plenty. Thought we would write you a letter just to let you know our club is still alive and well. The summer months have proved to be quite busy for us with a lot of visitors from other clubs calling in after the Rally.

At one stage we had 24 caravans and 16 tents packed into our small club grounds, which was really tremendous. There were naked bodies everywhere.

Two nights will well be remembered, especially by our Wellington visitors. Firstly a dinner was organised and held at our local Chinese Restaurant, which was attended by 47 people. Secondly a party was held on our miniten court, because our clubhouse was too small to cater for everyone. Lucky it was a fine evening and everything went without a hitch.

We already have 20 sites booked for 1985/86 season, so come on folks, why don't you join us, and see our glow-worms as well.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB

As we head into winter we can look back on an excellent summer season here in Wellington. It may be difficult for readers outside Wellington to believe, but we have had a tremendous summer, as shown by all the brown bodies around the grounds. In fact at the time of writing this, early April, the Regional Council has just announced water restrictions.

The great summer has been reflected in the number of new members joining our club, including, encouragingly a large proportion of families. There must have been hardly a day when somebody was not either swimming in the pool, just basking in the sun, or energetically playing miniten. The communal barbecue was extensively used, including most nights after work by people just eager to get out of their work and office clobber. Nothing like a nice cool swim and a quiet chat over tea, all in club uniform of course.

Over Wellington Anniversary weekend a mini rally was held at Five Acres and this was a great success thanks to hard work by our president and social organiser. The most pleasing aspect was the number of visitors from other clubs. This resulted in a return visit by a number of our members to the Wanganui Club. By all accounts another enjoyable weekend.

The end of summer was marred by the surprise discovery by the Upper Huff City Council that our grounds, in town planning terms, were a non-conforming use - something Patricia Bartlett is sure to agree with. It was an amazing discovery given the frequent consultations between us and the Council over building, drainage, wiring permits, sewerage etc. The result was that until we get the necessary town planning permission and a camping ground license nobody is allowed to stay on the ground overnight. We are confident, however, of having the problems sorted out before the start of next summer. At least it didn't happen in the middle of summer and it makes us realise how much we should value our grounds. In the meantime we look forward to all the winter social activities.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB

We have had a beautiful summer this year and many people have taken advantage of it, we also had many visitors from other clubs over the holidays. At the end of last year, two new baches have been built on the hill area, which makes now a total of six baches.

The New Year's Eve party was a big success and while still in party mood, the Palmerston North Sun Club was invited to visit us. On 22-24 of February a crowd of 30 P.N. members invaded us and we had a fun filled weekend, with golf, a visit to the local vineyards, a Disco and our own "Rapere" fun sports. We hope to visit them for a Polar bear swim this year.

A few weeks ago a power cable was laid underground, across playing fields, creek and up the hill; this to provide power to the baches and also more power points for caravans. We also acquired some goldfish for the pond, which we hope will multiply. This area is really beautiful and people who feel sporty can either have a paddle in the canoe or use the dinghy or play on the raft. The pond is also an attraction for native birds, like the blue heron. We recently had our A.G.M. and with some new faces (and ideas?) in the committee, we hope to make the next year an even more enjoyable one, as we now also have an official Social Organiser.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

Oh-oh - missed the last edition. Trouble being only came back from holidays a few days prior to the deadline and as usual the old grey matter wasn't properly into gear.

Hope that those of you who had hols had a great one. Although yours truly came back sporting 'stripes' on the old bod, have included a pic to prove we didn't let the side down.

Volleyball score

One of our members came up with a great idea in the middle of Tauranga Harbour a couple of weeks ago. How about a Marine Division of the Nudist Movement. (I did have nautical in there but the same person thought it may be taken the wrong way.) I mean to say, I'm sure there are a large number of you out there who enjoy the life on the ocean waves (or even on the lake waters). Wouldn't it be great if we could manage a weekend or similar and have a great get together. I know of a few starters in our club. Any ideas from out there!

Anyway back to the club situation. By the sounds of it we had a large number of visitors over the holiday period. A belated 'HI' to all of you from me. Although the camping season may be drawing to a close we are already planning for next season. Those of us well into the Geyserland side of things already have on the drawing board plans for toilet, shower blocks; to be in use for next season. The Club Committee and helpers are already into the initial stages of developing sports courts (ouch, the blisters) which should develop quickly over the winter season.

I am delighted to know that our club was just as popular over the Easter break. Apologies to those of North Shore who were wanting to see the families who visited them last year - unforeseen family illness prevented us spending much time at the grounds. Did get there on Monday although most of the time was spent in committee and G.L.P. meetings. I am sure that those members who were there made sure that a good time was had by all. Hope that TROPHY doesn't grow to big.

We are all looking forward to a productive off season and also to a proposed combined get-together with the Bay of Plenty Club at a social weekend at a members home in Tauranga. Have also arranged the hire of a Hot Pool complex for the Saturday afternoon. Roll on July.

By the way our old address of P.O. Box 1007, Rotorua has been returned to.

'SUNSEEKERS CLUB' - WEST AUSTRALIA

'Sunseekers' seems to be entering an active and busy era. We will be hosting the 1986/87 ANF Convention (coinciding with the Americas Cup) so for the next 18 months we will be working towards that. For some time we have had a convention committee looking into all aspects of holding this convention. Ground plans have been laid for the sporting and social sides, plus financing and publicising. Major tasks will include re-surfacing our tennis court, building a junior clubhouse, grassing and preparing camping sites etc.

Speaking of publicity - a media campaign leading up to our Open Day in February has aroused much interest, and many inquiries and visits have resulted in a big upswing in membership numbers. There is no doubt the public needs to be reminded from time to time of the opportunities, facilities and enjoyment to be found in nudist clubs.

ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

1985 is off to a good start for The Orchard. Weather-wise it's been absolutely lovely. Plenty of sun and absence of rain has left the ground looking very dry and barren, but it does seemed to have increased the number of people using the club grounds over the last few months. It's good to see so many tanned bodies running around and enjoying themselves. A major change has taken place - a giant step forward one might say for a club of our size, and that is that our Clubhouse is finally off the agenda and is well on the way to being finished before the winter catches up on us. The Clubhouse being completed will hopefully keep us all together over the winter months, being a place to gather and have social and games evenings etc. Over the Xmas period an enormous pine tree that was shading the Club grounds was lowered to ground level and the amount of pinecones and firewood should last well over the winter months.

The Southland Sun Club / Orchard interclub sports weekend was held in February. A sunny weekend with plenty of games to keep everyone on their toes. The victors of the Aparima Cup, naturally, being the Orchard. Our thanks are extended to Invercargill for their good turnout and sportsmanship. A social was held in a Marquee tent in the evening and a great time was apparently had by all. Our grounds are starting to look great. A few more shrubs have been planted and everything seems to be taking shape once again after the slip.

Till next issue then - Cheers and take care - we care.

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

Over the last few months we have had some incredibly good weather for this time of year. A lot of our members have taken advantage of the last attempts at keeping up their tans for the winter.

The maintenance of the grounds and facilities has been kept up to standard by an enthusiastic crew.

The grounds have been used a lot for camping with several visitors from other clubs calling in and staying a night or two.

Our social calendar had a boost with our Hawaiian night and sports day. Many thanks to all those members from other clubs who participated. We hope you enjoyed our hospitality, we certainly enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing you again. Congratulations to A.O.H.C. on winning the Best Team Overall cup.

After beginning this little note talking about the great weather, I must now include one particular weekend when the heavens opened and it poured. We are very proud of our swimming pool but don't appreciate one huge pool where our grounds should be!!

Yes, we were flooded. Have you ever seen floating freezers, furniture and lawn mowers? We have! Thank heavens for insurance companies and great supportive members in the big clean up operation. We now have a few minor alterations to make over the winter so working bees will be needed.

Let's hope it's not going to be too wet this winter. We have a few social events lined up for the cooler months but are all looking forward to seeing the sun again.

DE MERDA SANCTA

(or, Holy Shit!)

by Jim C. Cunningham

from Divine Reflections

Traditional nudist organisations not only preach that we should not be ashamed of our naked bodies - our genitals no less than our elbows, but they also say that we should not be ashamed of natural body functions. I think that the vast majority of us nudist/naturists have a long way to grow in this area. Nudists proclaim that they have no "private parts", but most want to defecate behind a curtain.

In this respect, my Roman Catholic Augustinian college prep. school was further along than any nudist park I have visited. In order to get into the locker room one passed through the lavatory consisting of a few fixtures like sink, urinal and toilet, but without any partitions at all. You were expected to defecate and wipe yourself with your fellow students, coaches and priests walking by or urinating right next to you. Hung up as I was at the time, I never used that toilet; I would have preferred to play a constipated football game. After all, maybe the opposing team would kick the shit out us anyway!

Seriously, though, bathroom manners would make a fine subject for a cultural anthropological study. Like take urinating. Urinals are often partitioned off from each other so that you can shake, rattle and cajole the last few drips from your private member without the gentleman next to you catching a glimpse of that mystery behind your fly. Many boys and men are so hung up that they even refuse to use the urinal. They'll wait for a toilet stall and urinate in even greater privacy (except of course you can see their head over the partition - nobody's fooling anybody - we all know what he's doing!)

Two men standing at adjacent urinals would make a hilarious skit. Hung up protocol requires men to look straight ahead at the wall (which isn't very interesting except at election time). You mustn't watch yourself urinate; it must be done without looking. Worse yet, you mustn't be caught chancing a glance at the guy next to you least he should begin to make some unkind judgments.

Oh, and conversation. You're really not supposed to talk to the guy next to you. It's sort of like you're invading his privacy or interrupting his flow of concentration.

Did you ever urinate in the woods? How far did you leave the trail in search of that ideal tree against to pee (your back, of course, turned to the others in your company)? Why turn your back? Why traipse way off into the bush? And if some true blue nudist did take a step off the trail and urinated right in front of us as we continued conversing, we should not turn our backs to him or even avert our eyes in the least. After all, we say that the natural body functions are not something to be ashamed about, and yet nudists/naturists are ashamed to watch someone urinate and even be caught just looking at the body parts we claim we shouldn't be ashamed of.

Let me digress on this point for just a moment. None of us would be embarrassed if we were seen staring at someone's elbow, but we would find ourselves embarrassed were it their genitals. That's why naturist parks and nudist beaches are really so very private - hypocrisy keeps people from looking at "the private parts". Funnier yet are the glances people do sneak in. They'll be talking to you for quite some time, maintaining tremendous eye contact (embarrassed to look anywhere else as though you were all eye) and when they do chance a glance at some other parts of your body (you know which parts), it will be quick - as they are yawning, or something. This is ridiculous. If I show you a photo of my face, I can say, "This is me." According to traditional nudist philosophy, I should also be able to show you a photo of just my left testicle, and say, "This is me." I think exhibitionists would be very disappointed at nudist places. They're going to have to flash it somewhere else. Back to urination -

And this goes for women too. They shouldn't squat behind a bush, but, like the men, just step off the trail and, facing the others, continue the conversation.

My first experience of gang defecation was in Sochi on the Black Sea in the USSR. When you're in Rome you usually have to give in and do as the Romans do; you're not in a position to question the customs, especially when you have "the green apple quickstep" and simply gotta go. So there I was in Sochi with the runs. I don't know if it was the Georgian wine, cheese, or the delicious shish kebab I cooked, but it seems that I spent most of the night squatting on a stand up toilet in full view of other tourists and rooskies engaged in the same honourable activity. For those who preferred the modern convenience of toilet paper there was only the newspaper Pravda, not much good for anything else, but a bit more interesting to read than the graffiti back home telling me what Reagan eats and all that (Pravda uses more than four- letter words to tell us what he eats - kapitelicheskoye gavno).

And now we finally come to the curse - menstruation. For so many girls menstruation is so embarrassing that they are even embarrassed when they say they can't go swimming, unable to find a decent excuse, unable to simply say, "I've got my period", and knowing full well that everybody knows what's really happening anyway. In contrast to this, a friend of mind told the guy she just began dating to wait awhile while she got ready to go swimming. She was in the bathroom for an intolerably long time trying to insert her tampon (she usually used sanitary napkins and was unaccustomed to tampon use). She finally gave up, used a pad instead, and came out and matter-of-factly explained the delay, saying she had been trying to insert a tampon so she could go swimming, but for some reason had no success. Her date later told me how impressed he was with her attitude - and this guy is not a nudist!

So many women would have a higher opinion of their sex if they changed their attitude towards the curse, regarding it instead as something special and wonderful, a dignified sign of womanliness and fertility. I remember as a little boy finding these mysterious packages in the bathroom wastebaskets. One day the spirit of Pandora entered into me and I began to unravel the yards of toilet paper enshrouding it. The task was so laborious that I think I gave up before I made it to the big mystery. Now, come on, ladies, isn't is usually sufficient just to hold the feminine napkin and wrap it just a couple of times?

If we are going to be consistent with nudist philosophy, then the act of changing pads or tampons should not be private or embarrassing either. Many women do seem to really despise their period - sometimes to the point of getting a hysterectomy. Maybe it is partly this very attitude women have towards their own sexual bodies that accounts for so much sex-segregation. Did you ever change a tampon in front of anybody? Would you find this embarrassing? Should it be embarrassing?

Some people would like to go one step further and say that sexual intercourse, because it is just as natural as defecating, shouldn't be private or embarrassing either. (Actually these people don't really go further because I have yet to hear them say what I have already said in the foregoing). If, during the marital act, someone chanced to enter the room, indeed, we should not be embarrassed, but the act is private nonetheless. Its privacy does not derive from its shamefulness, but from another source entirely - the marriage contract.

Others have no business whatsoever experiencing this intimacy. To watch a couple engage in sexual intercourse is to sensually (i.e. visually) participate to some extent. It is an exclusive relationship - nobody's business.

Nudity is different precisely because we claim it is not sexual of itself. Although one might fairly contend that because of the virtue of honesty, we have the right to see our neighbour - genitalia no less than elbows, yet as far as sexual acts are concerned (i.e. intercourse and those acts which directly and naturally lead up to intercourse), since. these are of an exclusive nature, only husband and wife have this right.

So let's let our naturism be more than skin deep. Let's not only profess that the natural body function are not shameful, but let's live it. We can start today right in our own homes.
