EDITORIAL:

"If there be any truer measure of a man than by what he does, it must be by what he gives."

- Robert South.

Emiel Roland, New Zealand Nudist Federation Free Beach Representative, was a man who continually gave. The feelings expressed in the Obituary, will, I am sure, reflect those of the majority of Nudists in Australasia.

By the time the next issue of the NATURIST is in our hands, CLUBS will have their nominations in for our National Executive and their delegates into our National Secretary's hands. Time now, maybe to ask why we see what could be classed "quality" men and women taking Club Executive, then delegate positions and doing it well, but when asked to take an N.Z.N.F. position bow out. Are these positions too time consuming, too hard on the pocket, or has the old grinding machine worn them out before they can give in this capacity?

Maybe we, the members, need to support our "budding" leaders more, so that when the time comes and we want to nominate them, they will gladly take it on and we will clearly have a choice.

OBITUARY

-

EMIEL ROLAND

Emiel died on May 9th 1979 as the consequence of an apparently minor accident while scrub cutting on a section he had purchased.

Born in Amsterdam fifty-nine years ago, he came to New Zealand in 1951 and with the weather warmer than in Holland soon became interested in nudism. He was at various times a member of Kaurimu and a committee member of Kowhai Valley. At the time of his death he was on the committee of Auckland Outdoor Health Club.

Some twelve years ago Emiel took up the cause of Free Beaches, and was campaigning for these long before the Free Beach Group was founded. He had established a dialogue with the Auckland Regional Authority and other bodies, and if the law of the land had allowed we would already have some "official" free beaches.

Emiel gladly joined the FBG, was co-opted to the committee and proved invaluable with his advice and assistance. He introduced many of us to his favourite free beach at Huia. For some time he was the tireless Business manager of the New Zealand Naturist.

In his day-to-day life Emiel was a fatigueless worker, serving with the Auckland Harbour Board for fifteen years and the City Council for thirteen.

He had many other interests - vegetarianism, breeding pedigree cats, and film making. In addition to being projectionist for Auckland Film Society he produced a film on 'Birth' for the Parents' Centre. He was also Chairman of Green Bay School Community Group.

Emiel was forthright but tactful, enthusiastic but practical, intelligent but mellowed by experience. One knew that here was a man one could rely on. It will be impossible to fill the gap in our ranks, and Emiel will be remembered with affection by many people.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Edna and the family.

NUDE IN THE AFRICAN BUSHVELT

Beau Brummel President B.V.C.C.

Beau Valley Naturist Club is situated on 1000 acres of magnificent African bushvelt. Mountains, rivers, and valleys inhabited by buck, baboons, leopards, jackals and wonderful bird life including the very rare Fisheagle known as the "Lord of the African Skies", make this the most unique "Nudist Club" in the world.

South Africa has 365 days of sunshine a year and Beau Valley, situated in the Northern Transvaal has a perfect Naturist climate, our members swim and sunbathe ten months of the year.

We have now been accepted as members of the I.N.F. and any overseas visitors coming to South Africa are most welcome to Beau Valley - the only legal club in the country.

Accommodation is provided in the form of log cabins and are fully fitted out. Excellent ablution facilities are provided with showers, toilets and hand basins. We do not have electricity, radio's, telephones, or television. Gas lamps and candles with big campfires burning at night provide the necessary lighting and cooking is done over the open coals.

Being in the bushvelt, many overseas visitors are frightened at night when the sun sets and the wild animals start their howling and calling especially the jackals and hyenas. On one occasion a French woman was too scared to leave her cabin and walk across to the toilets some distance away. She was sure some wild animal would eat her up. After two hours of "holding on" she finally started shouting for the Game Ranger to come and take her to the toilet. Other women who heard her shouting thought she was being attacked and also started calling for help. Everyone was screaming and shouting. I was called up on the two way radio and rushed down in the landrover with a hunting rifle to the rescue. When everyone realised what had happened the whole camp burst out laughing. It was 3 a.m. in the morning, we stoked up the campfires and put on the coffee. That night will never be forgotten at Beau Valley.

I must point out that the dangerous wildlife such as lions, elephants and buffalo are not to be found at Beau Valley. They were killed off many years ago and are only living in Game Reserves. Even the crocodiles that once swam in our rivers are no longer to be seen, so even though we are in the African Bushvelt everyone is safe and can come to no harm but the excitement is all there.

We have 10km of mountain trails for those who enjoy walking. There are picnic spots under the waterfalls and cliffs to be climbed for those who are energetic.

Our fishing facilities are excellent and the tourists enjoy catching the Blackbass, a fighting fish that keeps the angler busy for hours on end.

Lazing in the sun around the Olympic size swimming pool, that is filled from a mountain stream and has no chemicals added or sitting down by the river for that all over golden brown suntan, under blue skies in the heart of the African bushvelt is a truly exciting experience. Naturists visiting our "Land of Sunshine" will always be welcome here at Beau Valley at the southern tip of Africa.

Besides having the perfect Naturist climate, South Africa offers visitors to our land magnificent tourist attractions. The finest Game Reserves in Africa. Visits to the richest and deepest goldmines anywhere in the world, coach tours to German speaking South West Africa, the Skeleton Coast, the magnificent Namib Desert and the mighty Fish River Canyon, as spectacular as the Grand Canyon in America.

Wonderful beaches for swimming and surfing. Visit Capetown and ride the cablecar up Table Mountain, or Johannesburg, the biggest metropolis in Africa.

This is truly an exciting land of great contrasts and with our low cost of living, the overseas naturist coming to South Africa will find in it one of the cheapest and exciting holidays anywhere in the world.

SPANNING THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Mike Severs A.C.T.

Our Committee has been considering recently whether we believe Australia should remain affiliated with the INF. We've come to the conclusion that we don't get much value for our INF membership. We think Australia should pull out of the INF, and instead should look to setting up a nudist organisation just for our part of the world, the South Pacific. We'd like to share our conclusions with you, and we seek your comments on them.

1. What do we get from the INF?

If Australia pays a per capita fee to the INF it will cost us several hundred dollars a year, even if the ANF is successful in negotiating half the normal rate as proposed in their recent circular.

What would Australia get for its money? As we see it, basically three things:

(a) A few dozen votes for Australia at the INF World Congress, as against several thousand votes from European countries.

(b) INF passports for all, instead of ANE ones. How many people in your Club would that benefit? I understand that the ANF issued only about a dozen INF passports last year, and half of them went to our club. In addition, we have done an analysis of the clubs listed in the Guide, only 331 state that visitors must carry an INF passport. The other 259 clubs, or nearly, half don't require them.

(c) According to the ANF circular, we would get "larger representation, knowledgeable input, publications, advice and information material." Are these things of any real benefit to the members of your Club?

2. What are the alternatives?

We agree with the ANF that Australia should be part of an international nudist organisation. But we feel that the INF offers more to Europe than it ever can to nudists in Australia. What we need is an international association that is tuned in to the needs of our part of the world, the South pacific, not to far-off Europe. We see this organisation being formed and run by nudists from Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Caledonia maybe even Hong Kong and Japan. We've even thought of a name: The South Pacific Association of Nudists - SPAN - an acronym which indicates what we're trying to do. Span the South Pacific and bring people with similar ideas together, for their mutual benefit.

3. What would SPAN offer?

I'm glad you asked. Here are some thoughts to start off with:

• A regional passport system, similar to the INF.

• A South Pacific sporting convention, delegates meeting and rally say every two years, with the venue alternating among the member countries.

• Discussion with "regular" tourist operators to get cheap group fares, promotional funding, possibly nudist facilities at existing tourist resorts and perhaps even the establishment of commercial nudist resorts in member countries.

• Backing and promoting a regional nudist publication, perhaps offering support for the excellent "New Zealand Naturist".

• Exchange of ideas, visits and friendship among nudists of all member countries.

4. How would it operate?

This would need to be decided in a series of meetings. Possibly with a President, Secretary/Treasurer and (ex officio) the President of each national group such as the ANF and NZNF.

5. How much would it cost?

Again, this would need to be thrashed out at meetings. As a suggestion, suppose we put in what the INF are asking for, 25c per member per year. There are about 8000 nudist club members in Australia and New Zealand alone, yielding $2000 per year - not a bad working budget.

6. How to get it started?

Our club intends to put motions to the ANF Convention this year proposing that:

(a) Australia resigns from the INF, and

(b) the ANF should immediately enter into discussion with the NZNF and regional nudist organisations of other interested countries to establish a South Pacific Association of Nudists.

Wgtn Rally   IT'S GETTING CLOSER
The 79/80 National Rally

By the time you read this your club should have distributed Rally application forms to those interested in attending. If you haven't got one, make waves.

The Wellington Sun Club is going to 'bust a gut' to make this the most enjoyable Rally yet, with something for everyone from crib to rocking chair.

Building on the successful formula of recent years we can say that mornings will see sports enthusiasts doing friendly battle for a wide assortment of trophies, in every discipline from indoor bowls to miniten. Afternoons and lunchtimes are for fun and relaxation, except for the day when swimming sports will be held.

Look forward to hilarious odd ball team competitions, pottery and wood turning demonstrations and anything else we can dream up to tickle the fancy of you, our guests.

One brave couple has shouldered the task of entertaining the younger children, to take some of the pressure off mum, and give her a chance to join in the general fun.

When daylight fades, its time for the evening functions to take over. With our big clubhouse fully 'operational' we can thumb our noses to the weather and rock the rafters until the early hours. Whether you have talent or not, get busy on those concert items. . . they'll be needed for sure.

For those staying on for a day or two after the Rally we hope to arrange a picnic day at Pakuratahi, which has beautiful bush scenery and a sparkling stream to romp around in.

If you have been to Rallies before, make no mistake, this is going to be a good 'un. If you haven't, look forward to something unique in a social holiday. SEE YOU RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS.

"WHAT'S IN A NAME"

A subtle and hard to answer rhetorical question. I wonder if some bygone muse suffering a sleepless night had this awkward phrase revolving ceaselessly around his brain while he endeavoured to woo the elusive goddess of sleep? He has my sympathy, for at 4 am I find myself in that same situation putting 'BIC' to paper in an endeavour to capture a small portion of a personal answer.

The name? - "The Orchard!"

An unusual name for a nudist club in New Zealand, where by far the majority of clubs are defined by their geographical locality. And why, particularly, "The Orchard"? For in spite of the efforts of the lazy or the ignorant, we insist that the name is "THE Orchard", not just "Orchard" or "Orchid" or any other variation in appellation.

According to the records of the Lands & Survey Dept. in Dunedin the 32 acre block of land was a Crown Grant to one Thomas Calcutt in 1864, and by 1880 was already planted out in young fruit trees. Some of the earliest maps of the day delineated the property simply as "The Orchard", but officialdom with a singular lack of romance in its soul reduced the title to just another anonymous number. However, we feel that as there are still in excess of 400 fruit trees on the property the old title remains particularly apt.

On 3rd December, 1974, five people met privately to discuss the forming of a new nudist club in Dunedin, and the outcome of this occasion was what, in retrospect, has proved to be the wise decision to form "The Orchard Sun Club Inc". The result has been 4½ years of hard work, a lot of fun, some ups and downs, but culminating on 22nd June, 1979, in The Orchard Sun Club Inc purchasing what estate agents would undoubtedly describe as "this very desirable property".

Fortunately, the 'ups' have far exceeded the 'downs' over the last few years. One large 'up' has been the very considerable number of people met through the course of the club business - 150 of these people are presently club members and friends, while perhaps another 100 have been and gone, in the clubs short existence - such is the way in which people move on in this modern age. However, I feel that one of the distinct pleasures of attending to club business is the reception given whenever "The Orchard" is mentioned as the organisation represented. Nearly everywhere I go the name brings instant recognition of the club's name, purpose and location, and almost invariably the result has been cooperation and a friendly chat. Negative reactions could be counted on the fingers of one hand, and the much more usual reception has been an offer to help in any way possible. This positive and welcome reaction has extended from the Dunedin City Council, the Green Island Borough Council, Government Departments, down through firms and individuals, and I feel owes much to two reasons. Firstly, taking the attitude that The Orchard Sun Club is just another legitimate organisation like any other in the community.. Second, an active Public Relations approach to the community at large, where we take any opportunity for favourable publicity, make no secret of our purpose, location, or activities, and generally act as though we are a modern progressive, self helping group of respectable citizens. We are - and we are accepted as such!!

Perhaps the longest 'up' of all has been the recent purchase in the clubs name of The Orchard property. The ever looming presence of a five year lease deadline, while worrying, certainly has been an incentive to do everything possible to get the property into the clubs name. This would not have been possible without the generous response of members who willingly took up bonds to help raise the deposit, those who spent so much time selling raffle tickets, (including members of associated clubs), and all who supported us with their work and efforts in any way. Although I have heard it said a number of times that we had taken on too much and .would never make it, a positive attitude from the committee, and a determination to win have finally paid off. This is the first major battle in a continuing war, for we have a large mortgage to repay, but the same attitude will prevail, I am sure.

One bone of contention was whether to go ahead with capital development or wait until we owned the property, therefore putting all money into the purchase fund. To the disappointment of some, the decision was made to develop the property as if it was certain to become ours, thereby endeavouring to resolve the eternal problem of which come first - the chicken or the egg?

Our decision - the chicken! A club is members - people. Without members you have no club, and no future! Apart from the die-hard enthusiasts who are convinced nudists, and who are prepared to work for what they want, it is necessary to sell the club to John Q Public and his wife and children. Like any business, a club must have attractions and facilities to attract more members - and the aim must be to build that membership to the extent that the club becomes a viable, economic, self supporting proposition. I, and I am sure I have your support here, do not want to be selling raffle tickets into the indefinite future just to keep the club alive. The club must survive on normal subscriptions income once it becomes freehold, and to this end a substantial membership is essential.

Further fund raising is not unwelcome if a new amenity is in view, but must not become away of life.

Wellington clubhouse - under construction

Photo: L. McLeod, Orchard

We at The Orchard feel that a great future lies in store providing we use intelligent planning and keep our enthusiasm. Already developed are two concrete and two grass sports courts for volleyball, miniten, badminton or tenniquoits, a large 30' x 50' concrete swimming pool, mimi-golf course, barbecue and hangi sites, caravan and camping areas new water mains and extensions, kitchen, etc. A children's pool, automatic chlorinating equipment, a new shop, new electric power cables and alterations to the house as temporary clubrooms, are envisaged, either this summer or in the near future.

Further ahead - but not too much so - lie a modern clubhouse with comfortable lounge facilities, bar, cafeteria, pool table, committee room, etc, also modern showers and toilets, sauna, squash courts, cabins, and caravan points, adventure playground landscaping, etc. A dream? Maybe, but determination and imagination go a long way towards making dreams come true.

I'll make you a bet now - within a decade the public will be beating a path to our door!! Optimist (or blowhard) you may say, but I venture to suggest that no other type of club in New Zealand offers so much for the whole family to enjoy. Nowhere else can, all ages from infants to grandparents go together and find something of interest to all, except at a well developed sun club. Rules minimal, clothes optional enjoyment maximum.

And remember petrol shortages, restrictions, prices - The Orchard is only five miles (8 Km if you like) from the centre of the city 20,000 people, and one car can bring a family to the one point where all can find an interest.

If you are reading this Otago - and are a genuine type of person who enjoys company - we welcome you to a no obligation tour of inspection of our Orchard property. Visitors from other clubs are of course, always welcome, and our phone numbers are in the back of the magazine.

What's in a name? - The future of course!!!

AUSTRALIAN NUDIST FEDERATION REPORT

Peter Rowsell

Plans are in operation right now with the proprietors of Bangalee Nudist Holiday Village, Tocumwal, NSW to stage a really fantastic convention and rally for Australian nudists. Some of the events or facilities that will be available at Bangalee this summer will range from river boat trips on the Murray River, joy flights from their airstrip, disco's each night with live bands regularly appearing through the rally, then on top of all this we have the regular features of a rally to contend with - OH WHAT A HOLIDAY!

Since the last edition I was honoured to attend a 21st birthday celebration at the Helios Society. The progress of this Victorian nudist club is quite astounding, their facilities are vast and top class and in keeping with previous functions the evening was superb. Congratulations to all at Helios.

During the forthcoming period the ANF executive will be providing our affiliates with information regarding a possible "Supporter Member" scheme and strongly proposing that Australia should adopt some similar scheme that now exists in the UK and other European federations. We have already received many enquiries from people around Australia and would be interested in hearing from more people who would consider such a membership, at a nominal cost. Further details may be obtained from the ANF Office, P.O. Box 298, Bendigo, Vic. 3550 Australia.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Mike,

On behalf of us all at Pineglades, I wish to convey our shock and deep regret at the loss of one of New Zealand's pioneering nudists, Emiel Roland.

He will be remembered throughout the movement for many years for his energy and eloquence, but most of all for his smile.

Good humour was Emiel's hallmark and will be missed by many whenever New Zealand Naturists gather.

N. Wilkinson
President.

Dear Mike,

As Secretary of the largest nudist club in New Zealand I must take David Bacon to task for the unfortunate choice of words in the opening sentence of his otherwise excellent article (Issue 91, p.4.)

He states 'Nelson Sun Club' is not large as nudist clubs go but then we wouldn't want a large unmanageable, unfriendly gathering each week at our grounds.'

Really, David, you can't possibly have visited A.O.H.C.! (A little bird is whispering "sour grapes?" in my ear but I'll ignore that.) Large we may be but unmanageable and unfriendly we are not.

We'll deal with unfriendly first. It was the atmosphere of friendship at Oranui, that hooked me when my husband persuaded me to go for a trial visit, and new members almost always mention to us how friendly they find our Club. We at A.O.H.C. always advise prospective members to visit all clubs in the area before making their final choice, as we realise that small clubs suit some people while the larger ones suit the needs of others. We never press those members who seek solitude to join in with activities, but those that seek friendship find it readily.

O.K. having dealt with that let's turn to unmanageable. I'm not really sure what you mean by that. I don't think our members want to be "managed". We all do our own thing and let others do theirs. If you refer to club management by committees, I think ours, past and present, have "managed" all aspects of club work very well.

Let's leave it at that, but please David (or anyone else with any doubts) pay us a visit and I'll introduce you to some of the most friendly and manageable people you could wish to meet. I am proud to serve A.O.H.C. and will defend her against charges of "large - unmanageable and unfriendly" any time!

Angela Fawson
Secretary A. 0. H. C.

Dear Mike,

Steve and I have just finished a three week club- hop and holiday around New Zealand. It was three weeks of living proof of the statement that there are no such things as strangers, because we spent a lot of time having a ball with a pile of new found friends.

The people responsible for innumerable hangovers and closely avoided diplomatic incidents are too many to name, however no doubt they know who they are. The only thing we regret is the lack of time and perhaps energy to meet you all.

We just hope we have the chance to show some but preferably all you Kiwi frost lovers what sun loving is all about.

Steve and Chris Clarke
Sunshine Families. (Aust)

Dear Mike,

At the ½ A.G.M. of the N.Z.N.F. Peter and myself were given permission to write a booklet on nudism. This will include a section on the history of nudism in New Zealand and a history of all the Clubs and beaches.

If anyone has any information or newspaper cuttings of early nudism in New Zealand, we would appreciate them, or even photo copies of the same. We will return anything if requested to do so.

In February we attended the opening of the Waikato Outdoor Society's pool. The guest speaker commented how difficult it was to find any information on nudism in general. This prompted us to suggest to the National PRO that a book on this subject was obviously needed, so it could be placed in libraries etc.

Although the New Zealand Naturist carries interesting and informative articles, having the information concentrated in one book would be advantageous to nudism. However we will be unable to undertake this work without the support of members.

Doreen & Peter James.

New Plymouth.

Dear Sir,

It is with concern that I have noticed much correspondence to you about the centrefold in Issue 89.

First I think most of the correspondence is in very poor taste and my heart bleeds for the young lady concerned.

We, all of us, whether we are members of a sun club, Free Beach Group, or whatever should take the body as a whole and not make any comment on any part of it.

Imagine yourself, as a lay person, purchasing our magazine with the idea of joining up. I know what I would be doing.

I have seen shaven hair on various parts of the body, both male and female, long and short nails, painted nails, ears pierced, tattoos, bodies painted and no comment made.

I hope that anyone else who allows their photograph to be published will not receive so much degrading criticism.

Trevor Whalen.
F.B.G.

Dear Mike,

Congratulations on producing such a fine publication. I thought it very well laid out, easy to read, had very interesting content and made good use of photographs, which I thought were of excellent quality.

Overall, it reminded me very much of the British naturist magazine "Health and Efficiency" when it was a pocket sized, family type issue, although natural photos were not allowed then.

Naturism in New Zealand certainly appears to be very much family oriented, judging from your features etc. Also, your annual rallies seem to offer much more to the visitor than do those in the U.K. and appear to be on a par with the conventions of American nudism, with special events, sports, etc. whereas our A.G.M. is basically just "talking shop".

Dear Sir,

In your June issue, No. 91, when reading the Australian articles, I saw reference to a sport called Petanque and in an advert the sport Petonque.

I presume these are the same and would like to know what this sport is.

Could you tell your readers something about this sport as it could be of interest to New Zealand nudists. If you cannot tell us about it perhaps one of your Australian club readers could write to you and give us the rules.

John North.

There you have it Australia, how about coming across with the details.

Mike

Dear Sir,

It was with very deep regret that I read in the N.Z. Herald the announcement of the death of Emiel Roland.

Emiel and his family were among the first nudists we met when we came to New Zealand in 1967 and nobody could have done more to make us feel immediately at home in the beautiful setting of Kaurimu.

Emiel worked diligently for nudism and there is no doubt that his enthusiasm was inimitable. His work on free beaches has helped us to break down the barriers of ignorance which surround nudism and his total dedication to our cause deserves the highest commendation. His total frankness and complete lack of reticence when it came to the revelation of his name in public also deserves mention.

Like all those who work hard for a cause, he had his critics, to them I say, the man who never made a mistake never made anything.

Nudism is the poorer for his passing. Our deepest sympathy to Edna and the children.

John and Cherri Gilmour,

Paparoa.

Dear Editor,

In this day of emancipation of men and equality with women, I put pen to paper to reply to the Women's Representative Report by Hanna Rencher, Issue 91 June1979.

Raewyn and I travelled from Auckland to Christchurch to attend the National Rally at Christmas. While at the Rally we did everything together. When we had to clean our teeth or have a shower we went together, when we had a coffee we had it together, when we played or watched sport we did it together, and it was in our view, a very "together" rally.

During the rally, a women's meeting was to be held at a given time. Raewyn and I discussed this, and she said she might go and join in, and asked what I was going to do during that time. As I had nothing particular in mind, I suggested I accompany her. I did so. When it was noticed that there was a "cat among the pigeons" a vote was taken then and there as to whether I should be allowed to stay. The vote was carried with the condition that I remain silent ... I did.

During the meeting my opinion was called on a couple of times. I replied briefly.

Getting back to Hanna's report now that you are aware of more of the facts. She says that the privacy of the individual is not restricted to one sex, then goes on to say the right to invite one's friends or contemporaries to a gathering must be inviolable.

The Oxford Dictionary definition of contemporaries: - "Belonging to the same time: person equal in age." Surely I fit that category:... if you leave out the sex.

I would be the last person to gatecrash a party and take this opportunity to apologise to any person who was offended by my presence and thought I 'spoilt' the meeting.

As for 'missing something'. I feel the only thing I'm missing, is the 'things which are naturally peculiar to women'. Well I suppose I will have to keep looking to put my mind at rest over that one!

In conclusion, we both feel that if the Women's Rep cannot find anything more important to report on over the last six months, then we query the need for a Women's Representative at all!

Dear Mike,

As part of the Australian group at that marvellous Pineglades Rally (the Friendly Rally) my wife and I were somewhat swept up in all the enthusiasm about it being an international rally, and how there should be more of this international fraternisation. Lorna and Wal, our fellow A.C.T. Club members, suggested such in their letter published in Issue No. 90.

We think that there is considerable merit in having rallies which are called Trans Tasman, or international, or such like, and which should be so designated and endorsed by both the Australian Nudist Federation and the New Zealand Nudist Federation. It's an unfortunate fact of life that our respective rallies are held over the New Year break; to change the dates would be well nigh impossible because it is the most suitable time for all. But your Half Annual General Meeting idea could work to both our advantages (sheer distance makes a similar thing less practical for us in Australia). What is to stop some of your key people who are known not to be subject to office change visiting the Australian Rally, and what's to stop A.N.F. people visiting your half A.G.M., especially as Air New Zealand is now tempting us with extra low mid winter fares. We have much of mutual interest to discuss, including whether or not we need the International Nudist Federation etc.

We would like to see an effort made to designate every fourth rally as a "Trans Tasman Rally", with the first being in New Zealand in 1983/84, and the second being in Australia in 1987/88 (hopefully Canberra, the National Capital as it would be a great start to the country's bi-centennial year, but that can be argued before the A.N.F. Each country would continue to have its own rally, but focusing on particular Rallies as Trans-Tasman ones would mean people could plan ahead and rally organisers build in special programmes of international interest. Perhaps Australia could even take on the Dutch at volleyball, and beat them!

We were overwhelmed with the hospitality of the New Zealanders; we would love to be able to return some of that hospitality, Australian style. The Pineglades organisers reacted quickly to their international visitors by making the programme international; even the chimes on the P.A. system rang with an Australian accent, and Pinybear was a 'Pom'.

We would like to see our two Federations start a dialogue. Perhaps they already are, and we cannot see it. There could even be value in the Federations using the cheaper airfares and paying for observer/participants in each others annual rallies. If agenda papers were available early enough positions could be determined, delegates could be well briefed and could participate actively. With active involvement we could have avoided the uncertainties of last year over passport attitudes, free beach groups etc.

We hope the two Federations do not stand back waiting for the other to start talking.

Tom Campbell.

A.C.T. Nudist Club, Australia.

Dear Mike,

My wife and I (and our friends) look forward to each and every issue of your excellent magazine. The quality and format is second to none.

We wonder why all the 'to do' about your now infamous centrefold. It seems that there are pea brains all over the world and they are not limited to just the U.S.A.

I feel that there should be an equal time and attention given to other pictures that represent the wholesomeness we feel the movement is about. For example, the cover picture on Issue No. 86 couldn't be lovelier, really a beautiful picture and subject. In the same issue the centrefold showing the woman and the two children at the ocean certainly represents the idea we feel Nudism is all about.

Another very pretty and wholesome young lady is the centrefold of Issue No. 90. In the same issue, the rear cover is a beautiful picture of a woman at a pool side.

Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it seems evil thoughts are in the "mind"... Next there will be letters concerning what the model is "thinking", rather than where his or her hands might rest.

Jim and Sharon.
Glen Eden Sun Club.California, U.S.A.

Dear Sir,

My wife and I wish to express our wholehearted support for your campaign for Free Beaches in New Zealand. As a family we would dearly love to be free to swim and sunbath in the nude or in our swim- wear according to our own feelings on the day.

It seems to us that as soon as Free Beaches are made legal in New Zealand the problems that arise at present would be overcome.

Last summer here in Christchurch a young man rang a local radio talk back show to say that while sunbathing and swimming with his wife a rather unpleasant incident happened, of course with Free Beaches this would not occur.

So let's all join together to obtain Free Beaches throughout New Zealand so those who so desire may bare themselves in a state of peace of mind, knowing all will be well for them as they do their own thing.

K.U. Broley.

BEAUTIFUL MIND BEAUTIFUL BODY

George Montague U.S.A.

I have been studying the Nudist movement for over a year for a research paper. I would like to give my impressions as a non-nudist of the movement and the people.

First I will touch on the movement. The Nudist movement has evolved through the decades to become world wide organisations. As it evolved it has also taken a step away from the intended purpose of 'the beautiful mind in the beautiful body". I have heard it is great to go nude, but what spiritual and moral values would I gain.

Through my study, I have looked into the American movement. I will tell you what I have found, dirty politics, racial prejudice, prejudice against singles (more with males than females, but sanction is gained if a single male brings a female with him), arguments and organisational splits, and disputes on different issues.

One I have read over and over again in my research was... if alcoholic beverages should be allowed on club grounds. I must say the radical 60's are over, and the American Sunbathing Association is certainly trying to rectify the problems. But these problems were not caused by an organisation... but by the people in it.

This is where I come to the people, and back to the statement "... the beautiful mind in the beautiful body." Ask yourselves, "What am I benefiting from nudism? How can I cultivate the beautiful mind in the beautiful body?" The sun and air are two important elements in nudism, but how do you cultivate a beautiful mind?

1. Wholesomeness in thought.

2. Cut down on alcohol consumption. Alcohol dulls the mind and destroys brain tissue. When you are intoxicated you are not your true self.

3. Have good thoughts for one another. Eradicate prejudice in all forms in the organisation, and you have to start with yourself.

4. Think less of your sexual being and more on the wholesomeness of your body and others.

5. Let modesty shine forth.

"How can I cultivate the beautiful body?" The combination of sun and air will not entirely give you a beautiful body nor volleyball, tennis, etc... but a good exercise programme outside the club grounds and well balanced meals. This, with the combining activities of your clubs, will set you on the road to that goal. This is the secret of the beautiful mind in the beautiful body. Now think again and ask yourself, "what am I benefiting from nudism?" It better not be because you like to take your gear off.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC:

We have been busy recently with sauna's and a film evening. The N.Z.N.F. rally films, some of which dated back to the mid fifties and right up to the Wellington "Gumboot Rally", gave an interesting pictorial history of the nudist movement throughout the past twenty year period. We would recommend the other clubs show these films as they are very worthwhile.

Our sauna's have been quite well attended this winter, with three having been held so far.

As you are aware the R.S.C. is very much involved with the Geyserland Leisure Park (Hot Springs Purchasing Trust) complex at Orakei Korako and we are very pleased indeed to note the progress being made. Several major problems have been overcome such as access roading, power supply and the fresh water supply which is being organised at the present time. By the time this Naturist is in print, the Geyserland Leisure Park application for a specified departure, with the associated hearing of objections - if any, will be hopefully almost over. All being well the property purchase can then be completed.

NORTH SHORE NUDIST CLUB INC:

Since the last news we put in the magazine, things have really been progressing for North Shore.

Firstly and most important, our drive has now been formed and metalled, enabling us to bring caravans in and utilise our car park extensions.

After two wet Open Days, we managed a dry one in February. With visitors from many Clubs, Free Beach Group and the general public, numbering approximately 200, it was a resounding success. The day ended with a mouth watering Hangi and some very happy and content Nudists.

Growth of membership has necessitated extensions to our clubhouse which is now well under way.

On the 10th of June we held our Arbor Day that drew some sixty odd members along with as many trees and shrubs. One can imagine what they will look like when they mature, with flowers and shrubs added to enhance the sports area.

Over thirty Bluebirds from the North Shore Nudist Club intend 'flying' down to the Bay of Plenty Cabaret, at Rotokawa in September, so look out Canaries. If you see thirty odd members walking south give them a lift!

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEATH CLUB INC.

During May our 30th Annual General Meeting was held.

Since its' small beginnings in 1949, A.O.H.C. has been developed into what must surely be the premier naturist club in the southern hemisphere.

This development has been due to the enthusiasm and untiring devotion of a number of our club members who have remained with the club throughout and who have seen the challenge and have firmly laid the cornerstone during this first thirty years.

The goals set in those early days have now been achieved and firm planning is underway to establish our future objectives so that we may progress and maintain the club at the highest level and most of all retain that "joie de vive" of members which we as naturists believe is the greatest objective of all.

In spite of the rain on our inter-club sports day we were able to meet our many friends again and enjoy their company. The alternative date was somewhat better but only a limited number of members from other clubs were able to attend as other functions conflicted with the date.

During the holiday period we had considerable numbers of campers on the grounds and in particular a larger contingent of our own members than there has been in past years.

We have held very successful Swimming Sports, Junior Miniten Tournament and this past Easter weekend a highly competitive Adult Miniten Tournament. Our players have reached a very high standard of competitiveness and skill. Congratulations to all those winners.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC:

Our 25th Anniversary was celebrated by holding Morning Tea on the Club grounds with our Patron Mr Norman Murray as our special guest.

In early May our Annual General Meeting was held, at which time our re-elected President Ron Rencher commented favourably on the construction of the new clubhouse. The evening finished with a very successful social.

Recently an enjoyable Progressive Dinner was held with a full four course meal. Occasions such as this have proved a good way for members to mix during the winter months.

MAPUA LEISURE PARK

Since our last report progress has been made in felling a large number of trees and preparing the area for the miniten court.

Unfortunately our application for the specified departure which was to be heard by the Waimea County Council on 7 July as been deferred until early August due to problems with drainage and water. The engineer's report has now been finalised and we are optimistic regarding the outcome.

A last minute objection to our application was lodged by a group of local residents concerned about nudity on the beach. This was supported by twelve signatures. Our new friends in the area have now organised a counter petition welcoming our project and stating they had no objection to our activities. Over 50 signatures were obtained!!

As a result of our advertisement in the June issue a considerable number of bookings and inquiries have already been received. We would recommend that anyone interested in spending their holidays with us book their accommodation promptly.

An article in the Nelson Evening Mail giving full details of our plans has resulted in an influx of visitors who have taken advantage of the beautiful sunny days we have had virtually every weekend to inspect the site. All have been impressed by its beauty and natural advantages.

Note in the advertisement in the June issue we referred to "three self-contained motel units on beach frontage". These are more correctly described as "tourist flats". They are fully equipped, except for linen, but are not serviced.

NORTHERN SUNSEEKERS INC.

Up here, our clubs have no luxury facilities, but however we do have a unique area that is sheltered on all sides with some picturesque bush walks, with not only Kiwis but also a 600 year old Kauri.

We indulge in a completely natural environment, with no transistors, T.V.'s, or hot showers. We cook on open barbeques. Waikato and King Country members will highly recommend our barbequed fresh caught fish meals.

Our membership continues to grow.

FREE BEACH GROUP

Our summer season was a huge success. We introduced a lot of the public to the delights, pleasure and health benefits of skinny dipping and many are now firm believers that togs will be an unnecessary item in their future life style. Many of our earlier members have been busy searching out more beaches which could be declared "clothing optional" areas.

During the winter months the Group still continues to provide most of its members, particularly those living near the main centres, a chance to meet for a sauna and a chat. Those that have the doubtful privilege of living near Auckland have a once a month chance of a good evenings swim.

Our membership numbers continue to increase and as the times become enlightened, the days of a "clothing optional" area near to the main centres cannot be far away. We must press to bring this time forward, for such beaches near to the main centres are essential in these days of motoring difficulties and our common wish to save fuel.

Our plans over the next few months will largely depend on the new committee which will be elected at our Annual General Meeting at the beginning of August.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC:

As summer approaches, preparations for the Rally are well on the way and a variety of schemes are being dreamed up behind closed doors to provide some surprises for our visitors.

It's been a busy winter with the usual sauna evenings providing welcome relaxation and social enjoyment. Our working bees have been an outstanding success and our grounds are looking satisfyingly good thanks to the diligent efforts of our hard working members.

By the time you read this, our Ball on August 25 will be among our memories but it is pleasing to see that despite petrol restrictions and rising costs affecting us all, our members are still getting together and socialising, which after all, represents a major factor in our clubs and in the Nudist society.

Heartiest congratulations to John Groen for his efforts in organising the national Open Day on November 24 & 25. With the transient population we have in Wellington, it is difficult and prohibitively expensive to reach all our prospective members. John's coordinated national approach should be of tremendous assistance, not only to our club but to the whole nudist movement in New Zealand in bringing our ideals to the public at large and promoting acceptance of the way of life which we as nudists so often take for granted but from which we derive so much enjoyment. Finally, we wish to extend a warm invitation to all the Nudists of New Zealand to join with us in the 28th National Rally, a time to renew old friendships and to make new ones. A time when, families who believe that recreation together as a family does not require clothes, to gather together for a few days to "do our thing" - together.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC:

Greetings from Mecca, home of the Gisborne Sun Club, and the site of tired but jubilant members and visitors alike.

Saturday 7th July we held our Annual Cabaret. The tickets were all pre sold within days of being issued and the whole evening was what could be called 'swinging'. We had visitors from as far afield as Auckland, Taranaki, and Bay of Plenty. Music was supplied by Gisborne's leading band "Beehive" and also Barry from B.O.P. who had a guest spot and wowed everybody. Sunday, members and visitors converged on the club grounds. Our Hot Tub was fired up and was soon put to good use.

For those who have not seen the club grounds for a while, work is continuing and we have a large block wall behind our swimming pool and also a 2.5m high fence behind the Hot Tub, These replace the old barberry hedge. Our children's area is coming ahead slowly, the latest addition being a see-saw.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB INC:

Our pool, which will be officially opened in November is a 14.3 x 6.7 metre fibreglass structure. Then we will be able to offer swimming sports and relief from the hot S.A.N.C. sun.

Levelling and regrassing the miniten court is progressing well so there will be no more "rough spots" for the ball to find.

We have had a very successful winter on the social side with Cabaret and Housie evenings and now look forward to summer.

The members of S.A.N.C. wish to pass on their condolences to Edna and family at the sad and untimely loss of Emiel.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

FREE BEACHES:

VICTORIA

We wish to forgo our usual Free Beach Report in this issue and pay a small personal tribute to our fellow "free beacher" across the Tasman who we are saddened to hear has died recently.

Emiel Roland was one of New Zealand's foremost free beach campaigners and his early loss to his family and the nudist movement will leave a gap difficult to fill.

His contribution over many years has helped enable thousands of people to enjoy our way of life on public beaches.

We in Australia have gained inspiration and information from his numerous, positive, interesting reports appearing regularly in the New Zealand Naturist.

The courage of his convictions, the will to carry on despite all the setbacks, proved he was a true nudist.

It is sad that after all his efforts Emiel died before his dream of legal free beaches for New Zealand became reality.

We hope that Edna, his wife, and children find comfort knowing that Emiel will be remembered by nudists for all his unselfish efforts he was prepared to make for fellow nudists and his fellow man.

We were fortunate to have been able to meet Emiel and his family, in Christchurch at the last N.Z.N.F. Rally, where after years of letters, we were able to spend some time together, discussing and exchanging idea's on, yes, you guessed, his favourite topic FREE BEACHES!

We salute his past efforts and mourn his passing. PEACE.

EUREKA SUN CLUB:

In this State the New Zealand Naturist is deemed "objectionable" by our censors, and is not on sale. We are also still short of the day when Government Ministers open rallies.

On a happier note we can report success in two recent social occasions. These took the form of Saturday night Barbeques to which members brought along outside friends, meat and booze. Yes, the members of Eureka have fallen victim to the demon drink - on special occasions the committee may grant a licence. We had nothing but good reports from our members and their guests, who were impressed by the peace and untouched state of our grounds. It was a good P.R. exercise and helped a bit to promote nudism by showing a few members of the public that nudists are normal people. We hope to have for our next function a 'coppa man' the Thursday Island ancestor of the Hangi.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST HOLIDAY RANCH

We are glad to report that we now have in operation a sauna with seating for ten and it is a sweating success. Funds for this project were raised by members through a stall at a Flea Market.

Many members put a lot of perspiration into the building of our sauna, and hope that it takes a lot of perspiration out of those that use it.

Our Youth Group organised a concert night on the 21st July and raised more money towards the purchase of a full sized trampoline. Great show kids, keep up the good work.

CORIO VALLEY: VICTORIA

A new committee has taken office, and Corio now has its first lady President, in fact there are three ladies on the four person Executive.

The very well attended A.G.M. was indicative of the members concern and inspirations for the future of the club. The Executive and Committee being mindful of this support know that the year ahead will be one of consolidation.

Corio Valley is fortunate in that for the past four years it has been listed in both sections of the telephone directory under the club's name, and in the classified section under clubs - Nudist. This service has been an ideal advertising medium, giving the public easy access to information on the Nudist movement and Free Beaches.

Membership of Corio Nudist Club is scattered between Western District towns of Colac, Camperdown, Ballarat, Ararat, Melbourne environs and the Geelong area.

TASMAN SHIELD

A proposal was put to the President of the New Zealand Nudist Federation and the Australian Nudist Federation, and accepted in the spirit it was presented, that a TASMAN SHIELD be donated for friendly competition between Australian and New Zealand Nudist Federations at Annual Rallies.

The donors, an Aussie and a Kiwi, have donated this shield to foster goodwill and cooperation between our two countries through friendly competition.

This first year the shield will be in Australia and the challenger New Zealand will compete against Australia by choosing from tennis, Miniten, table tennis (singles or doubles) and Volleyball.

The challengers should advise the ANF as soon as possible their choice of sport.

It is the donators sincere wish "that the shield be competed for without an excessive spirit of competition, but rather with fun, joy and good humour to be shared by everyone", which they feel "is essential for the well being of our nudist movement and the world".

NUDISM IN NEW CALEDONIA:

Ray and Annabel

We have received further information on the activities of the Nudist Association of New Caledonia. The New Zealand Naturist has carried two earlier reports. The first December 1978, and the second, a letter to the Editor in the March issue 1979, written by Christian Plancard, Secretary of the Association.

Any inquiries should be written in French and addressed to:

Association Caledonienne Naturiste
B.P. 3982.
Nouvelle Caledonie

The installations planned are: - 10m boat; a meeting hall; 15 cabins; 15 camping sites; 8 toilets; 2 miniten courts; 2 volleyball courts; a childrens play area; hot water and electricity. The tariff has not as yet been decided, but will in any case be reasonable.

The centre is planned to open in September 1979 with the following aquatic activities being offered - sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, diving and underwater photography. BORDER RIVER NUDIST FARM:

W.R. Bryer.

Border River continues to expand its facilities and now has a full size trampoline, fibreglass canoe for 2 persons, and an outboard motor boat with oars supplied if required!

Improvements in accommodation have also been made with the addition of double beds, mattresses, more single beds, tables and chairs, television, crockery, stores and refrigerators.

A tennis court is under construction and hopefully will be ready for our summer months. A number of trees were planted last winter and spring to improve the surroundings and provide more privacy.

The caravan park has been coated with a fresh layer of sand to make things more pleasant after the rain.

Families that have stayed have enjoyed the farm which is run in conjunction with "Border River" and watching the cows being milked, and even trying their hand at milking.

The children have had fun in taking part in feeding the pigs, calves, fowls and helping feed out hay to the cattle with the tractor and trailer.

At hay making time in November and December the adults have helped in getting the bales in and stacking in the sheds.

Bookings are always welcome from nudist families, couples and groups.

Border River is only 100 yards from the River Murray, New South Wales and Victoria border, hence the name. Last summer quite a number of people were taught to water ski. A great deal of fun was had by all and a lot of people became quite good on double skis. Needless to say I enjoyed having them very much.
