EDITORIAL:

This magazine fulfils a valuable public relations exercise for our movement. Indeed it is the most important and efficient way of getting our thoughts and feelings across to the great uninitiated. As the Editor reminds us from time to time, regular contributions by way of articles and photographs are both desirable and necessary so that we can show the community at large that we are not a lot of cranks, but have something worthwhile to offer.

However, besides the written and photographic message, we must be careful that our actions also reflect our basic message and do not cause embarrassment or offence to members and non-members alike. Unfortunately it would appear that some sections of the community still harbour misconceptions and have suspicions as to our motives and activities. Any behaviour which would support these largely unfounded ideas reflect on the true and genuine nudist who generally just wants to do his or her own "thing" without harassment. It is certainly in all our interests to prove, when called upon, that the average nudist is not interested in certain types of behaviour or publicity but only wants to do what most other people would want to do but without clothing when the occasion is right.

Let us make our message this year one of tolerance towards the uninformed. After all you and I were once one of them so let's ask them to "Bare with us".

BANGALEE NUDIST HOLIDAY RESORT

Dick & Terese Van der Vliet: A.C.T.

A visit to this well-run and progressive resort along the banks of a clear running River Murray, on the Victoria - New South Wales border is well worth the trip.

We hope, through the columns of the Naturist, to reach everyone interested and contemplating a nude holiday, whether in or outside the organised nudist movement.

The work, effort and forward planning put into this resort so far has, over a short period of time, resulted in a place where everyone can enjoy themselves.

We found a well laid out camping ground and a reasonably priced General Store, well stocked with most necessities and any item not stocked available at short notice. Ice was delivered to your site and put in your ice-box if one happened to be away - a touch of extra service that gave one the feeling, that nothing is too much for the proprietors.

For the sports minded, tennis courts, volleyball, trampolines and more being constructed.

There is excellent swimming and sunbathing along more than 7 km of river frontage with a nice sandy beach, plenty of shade trees and grassed riverbanks when it gets too hot for you, a safe anchorage in an inlet for the fishing fraternity and boats for hire in nearby Tocumwal. Water skiing can be done on a limited scale and is very popular with the locals. The grounds comprise beautiful bushland settings and bird life galore.

An active youth-group ably assisted by the proprietors' charming daughter is currently renovating a double-decker bus for their headquarters. They are raising funds by doing odd jobs and looking after lost property, which can be redeemed for a small donation.

Work well in hand is the completion of a large swimming lake with a diving raft. Barbeques have been built around it and plenty of shade trees have been planted all over the grounds which in years to come will be much appreciated by all comers. A lake stocked with fish, with a picturesque bridge over it is also under construction. Clearing and construction of an Airstrip for light aircraft has been almost finished, so that travel time can be cut short by chartering an aircraft or flying your own in if you have one. A golf course is being laid out as well. We were told that another two ablution blocks would be built in the camping grounds augmenting the present centrally located one.

It was good to see how showers, toilets and basins were left clean for following users by the campers. No doubt the provision of cleaning sponges and the high standard of the facilities had everything to do with it. A washing machine is available and good washing up facilities provided outside the main building with plenty of hot water beautifully soft, coming from a bore.

Cabins fully equipped spaced out over the grounds available for rental is another project to be tackled shortly. The 11th A.N.F. Convention can look forward to a good time to be had by all.

One noticeable sign that Nudism is coming of age was the bold sign writing on the proprietors vehicles, "Bangalee Nudist Village, for enquiries phone Tocumwal 31."

No hassles with letters of introduction from club secretaries - if one feels like trying a different family holiday, take them for a nude one. Just phone or drop a line for information and I am sure you will be made most welcome.

If this reads like an advertisement, we would like to be excused. We felt that this would be a good way to say thank you for having us on our recent stay.

We wish the proprietors the support of everyone in or outside the organised nudist movement so that they may get on with providing the best possible amenities for as wide a public as may be attracted to Nudism.

PROFILE OF A NEW ZEALAND CLUB:

NELSON SUN CLUB INC.

Our club, the Nelson Sun Club is not large as nudist clubs go but then we wouldn't want a large unmanageable, unfriendly gathering each week at our grounds. The smallness of the club is one of its chief assets. Everyone is on friendly terms and we are enthusiastically drawn by an irresistible force to our grounds up Sunrise Valley for more fun in the sun amongst friends.

In 1978 Nelson province won second place in the annual sunshine stakes with Blenheim first, so we in Nelson are extremely lucky with the weather as countless weeks go by when we can strip off and enjoy the sun. We are surely blest with a wonderful climate. Even in winter after a hard frost members can be seen working on projects at the grounds under the warm winter sun stripped down to their corn plasters.

Since the club was formed in December 1968 much work and improvements have been done to our grounds, house and amenities on our 6½ acre block.

Many pine trees have been planted around the boundary and are giving greater privacy to the club each year as they grow. However from our elevated site one can still get a grand view down the Sunrise Valley towards Motueka and the background hills and mountains. On two sides we are sheltered from the prevailing winds by a privately owned forest. Often when there is a strong wind in the tops, there is a steady calm below. Our headquarters couldn't be better placed facing the sun affording us many hours of just the right climate for nudism.

Each year Nelson seems to get more popular with the travelling nudist families and this year was no exception. We enjoyed having many groups camp and stay at our club, many having just come from the National Rally at Christchurch.

We will be the first to admit there's a lot more we would like to see done at the club however, as funds come to hand, these projects will be undertaken. At the moment our top priority is to pay off the mortgage on our property which we should do in about two years time.

The excavation for our large adult pool still remains empty as it has done for years. In the meantime adults and children alike use the smaller pool which is quite adequate for cooling off.

Our membership is quite international, which makes for interesting conversation, the ages range from Grandmothers to young children. For some reason we don't seem to attract the single female but this is not so with the male member. However, as time goes on, the situation may change.

In the past we have held "Open Days" when the general public are free to meet and join in with us if they so wish. In this way we've managed to increase our membership.

In June we hold a mid-winter gathering when members celebrate the shortest day of the year and look forward to longer, warmer days in the future, culminating in another hot summer, we hope.

On New year's Eve there is the usual party in the clubhouse and then at midnight several members see the New Year in - in the pool amid much laughter and hilarity.

Soon the sound of chain saws and axes will be heard in the forest surrounding our grounds, as members retrieve fallen trees brought down by a past cyclone. These will be cut up and sold as firewood, in this way we hope to make some well-earned cash for the club.

So, as you can see, although you may not hear a lot about us, we in Nelson do exist. We are quite active and alive enjoying God's greatest gift - sunshine - any opportunity we can.

So do come and join us. Come and stay if you can at "Sunrise" in the Moutere Hills. You know you'll always be most welcome.

FREE BEACH REPORTS:

NEW ZEALAND: Emiel Roland

The Free Beach issue is not news any longer to the media. Free beaches are being used everywhere and no one cares. That's a good thing isn't it?

We may not have achieved the legalization of free beaches, but we have achieved a de facto legalizing by a Supreme Court ruling.

The different Nudist Clubs and the Free Beach Group, have worked hard at spreading the gospel and no difficulties have been experienced.

The indications are that soon we will be able to a dress optional motel and camping grounds. Who says we are not making progress.

It is about time that the politicians opened their minds to the facts on our life styles. But if they do not it will not bother us very much. The Free Beach Movement is rolling forward under the protection of a Supreme Court ruling - and that's what matters.

VICTORIA: Mary Weston

February 8 this year the State Government Minister for Youth Sport and Recreation Brian Dixon wrote to Victoria's 211 Councils and Shires seeking their view on the matter of nude bathing.

The letter asked two questions. Whether the Municipality thought specific areas of beach or inland water should be designated for nude bathing; and secondly whether their municipality thought areas within their boundaries could be investigated for possible nude bathing?

I believe the letter will only result in a nonproductive wasted exercise, because in this State of Australia, Councils and Shires all come under the Local Government Act and the Minister for Local Government, and it is the Government who in fact makes the laws, not Councils!

Also to have the situation where nine or twelve councillors from a specific area, where in many instances the council elections are non-compulsory, making decisions that are not truly representative of the majority of people in a given area, is at the least disputable.

The only true assessment that could be gained would be if the government was to conduct a referendum of all people - but what an utter waste of taxpayers money that would be.

When you consider all the supportive statistics available, including the Victorian Public Opinion Poll of May 1978 - which showed 72% of the public favoured designation of free areas; plus excellent reports from Committees of Managements from official free areas in South Australia, Northern Territory, New South Wales and Canberra; and still this State of Victoria has no official sanctions.

One could ask how much more proof does the Government need before making a positive decision in favour of this matter? (There are none so blind as those who will not see!)

It is too early at this time of writing (April 10) to draw definite conclusions because many of the 211 council., and shires have not yet replied.

The press, along with some councillors have had a "field day" at the nudist's expense, which would be humorous if the matter was not one of such importance to all of us.

Locally in the Geelong region where the now well established and accepted free beach is located at Point Impossible, the eight councils have shown a mixed reaction to the Minister's letter. Point Impossible is under the South Barwon Council jurisdiction and a surprise result there has been the council voting "no" on the casting vote of the Mayor. When voting was taken on this matter previously it was unanimously no, so we have gained ground significantly in this area. At this time there is a notice of motion to rescind this decision and re-discuss the matter, in the light of the narrow defeat and further information becoming available to councillors on a personal level from "our side".

Always optimistic, I personally believe the tide is running our way, and next summer Point Impossible will be OFFICIAL!

A.C.T KAMBAH POOL:
George Cook

In the last issue I reported the sad news that the Minister for the Capital Territory had decided not to extend the Kambah pool beach, as had been previously agreed. It's always more pleasant to report good news, so I'm pleased to announce that we won. The beach at Kambah Pool now extends to 150-200 metres downstream of the car park.

At about the time I sent in the previous report, some pretty frantic activity was going on. Within a matter of a week, a group of regular beach users collected over 800 signatures on the beach, in a petition from nudist beach users. The newspapers throughout the country reported the fuss, and even a national current affairs T.V. show took an interest.

By mid-January, the headline was 'Ellicott plans review of nudist reserve'. In the accompanying article, the Minister announced that he would consider further submissions. The A.C.T. Nudist Club lodged a submission, as did many beach users. Finally, it was announced that the beach would be extended.

Several interesting points that came out of the confrontation. The news media proved to be totally "on- side" as no opposing letters appeared in the press. Finally, the local M.P. declared himself "on-side" by visiting the beach and giving his support during the fuss.

NYC logo NYC logo   N.Y.C. Rally Report:
  From Fred Rebers.

The day of leaving the main Rally in Christchurch was a reminder of leaving for the youth rally from the last Wellington Rally. The only thing was, it cleared the same day then. This time rain seemed to get heavier as we neared Dunedin, which had two of our members regretting that they had been persuaded at the last minute to come along.

Once in Dunedin, the lucky few who had spotted air early arrival of the day before headed directly to the Orchard Club. The rest of us started to scan the area in which we thought the club had been hidden before heading back to a Council Office in the city centre. Two helpful young ladies gave us tons of instructions and a map and sent us on our way.

Upon arrival, big discussions were entered into as to where camp was to be set up. When we came to an agreement, tents were unloaded and packed into a tight knit group on a clearing amongst the apple trees A few of the noisy ones decided to camp out of earshot.

That night we had a taste of what a real Dunedin summer's night was like as we huddled in closely to an open fire in the clubhouse. Our latest arrival, who arrived just past midnight, made sure he didn't move to fast, as he clambered off his motorbike, just in case his frozen limbs snapped.

The next day started for some with a cold swim instead of standing in line for a cold shower. It seems strange that thirty gallons of hot water doesn't go round when thirty people want a shower at the same time. The drizzle had cleared to a heavy overcast so it was time to track down a volleyball to slap around. I think we must have spent more time fishing the ball out of the overhanging trees, than actually playing.

The afternoon was spent window shopping through the city centre before taking in a movie. We seemed to create the odd panic now and again as the woman became a bit flustered when we said we wanted thirty tickets in the same block of seats. This is when the usherette was due for her surprise as all the tickets were handed over in one lot.

After the movie we headed back to camp to a dinner of chunky soap on toast, Emil and Doug style. You know what they say about too many cooks ... this would be about the time when Wendy was gently persuaded to take a swim with all her clothes on. Grant's torn shirt sleeve and a tear up the back of Conrod's shirt tell the whole story.

We topped the evening off with our A.G.M. and the election of officers. By the way all the National N.Y.C. business is now conducted through P.O. Box 7056 Christchurch.

The following day we were woken by a heavy downpour which saw Grant headed back to Christchurch to meet a prior commitment. An indoor activity was sought after and a suggestion of visit to an old Scottish castle was brought up. Transport was sorted out to keep those of us who were on motorbikes dry. With an hour's drive in weather which allowed us to see only a few car lengths ahead, took us through what you would imagine to be typical Scottish countryside, to the entrance gate to the castle. Once again more hassles as we asked for group discount. She gave us fifteen per cent off all adult fares which wasn't to bad as Wendy was the only one who could pass as twelve.

A sauna was now in order, once the castle had been given a thorough going over, we headed back to the city. A long hot soak was just what was needed to get rid of the cold in your bones. Whoever told me that Dunedin has a summer? Or maybe it's just us from the North, not used to a South Island summer!

Back to camp again, the drizzle had cleared to sunshine. The volleyball was brought out for a game. Now that the sun was out, there were some who decided to brave the waters of the pool. When everyone had had enough, Wendy thought she would try a trick she had seen done before. She put three inner tubes on top of each other and sat herself on the top one. The only thing was, she was still fully dressed. Everything went well for a little while, until someone started throwing plastic balls at her. You could probably guess that she would lose her balance and get completely soaked again. As she dried off Marten rang the gong to announce that his spaghetti was ready to be served.

After dinner Leon invented a new game. He lined a pile of people in a line then rolled an inner tube down a hill. Everyone had to jump the tube without stopping it or else you went to the back of the line. This continued till nightfall.

The next morning the weather started to show us what it could do in the line of sunshine and heat. I would not have believed it if I had not been there to feel it. It was so hot that most of us actually stripped. Conrod, Tim and John started packing their gear onto their bikes, they wanted to see some of the West Coast before heading home to start work. After farewelling them, a salad was made and we headed out to Murderers Beach. Emil's luck changed on the way down the last stretch of a hill nearing the beach as his gear lever broke loose in his hand. When he reached the bottom of the hill, his brakes were hot enough to cook on. Our greatest conquest of the day was to dam a small creek leading to the sea. Nearing the end of the day a fire was started for a barbeque of sausages and toast, but the sand flies soon prompted us to clean up and head back to camp.

That night was rounded off by watching a Sunday night horror movie at the local theatre.

The following day, once again brilliant saw Marten headed homeward bound followed by the three sisters. Being Monday it gave Emil the chance to borrow a local engineers welder to weld his gear lever together.

That day's venue was to take in a tourist tour of one of Dunedin's oldest houses. It proved to be quite interesting to see how up to date the rich were in those days. A visit to the tepid baths was next in line and then back to camp for dinner. We ended the evening by visiting a sauna the local members frequent.

The last day was spent cleaning and packing before each of us heading our own ways. Although the weather wasn't entirely on our side, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

YOU

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." - Genesis 1:27.

I was conceived of a union which had taken place on a bed, in darkness. My birth took place in a hospital theatre before a small group of doctor and nurses. Mother was under anaesthetic, father was shut out of the room, for he must not see. Comfort and food came to me from a glass bottle: Breast-feeding was inconvenient and there may have been times too, when it might not have been possible to find a secluded place in which to feed baby for nobody must see.

During childhood I learnt you must not see brother/sister or father/mother and that you must be dressed to be nice. Even a naked doll was not nice. Once, with friends, a naive interest in ourselves created a scandal; we had discovered differences in one another.

As I grew up there were changes to my body - half explained and less understood. There were smut stories told and 'explained' by friends; the body of the other sex was discovered through stolen peeps and the occasional magazine. You could feel the other person's body on the beach, on the back seat of a car or on the sofa at a party, but you must not see it.

When the initial shyness had worn away after marriage we still continued to make love in a darkened room. Our own family were all reared in 'darkness' with us encouraging prudery and ignorance. In my old age as I wrapped myself more tightly than ever in heavy coats, I found I reflected, more so, the prejudices and conventions of the society in which I lived: the society I had helped to create. Taboos, such as not seeing another's body, would outlive me, I need not fear for the next generation.

Now in death I am nicely clothed, resting in a velvet-lined casket. Even as I lie before my mourners my body shall not be seen.

Most people live their lives without seeing a human birth or a dead person. Between their own birth and death few see other naked people. When they do they are often ashamed or embarrassed.

IMPRESSIONS FROM TWO F.K.K. HOTELS IN YUGOSLAVIA Robert Broekstra

After having camped so often we decided to put into 2 F.K.K. hotels on our way back from Greece through Yugoslavia. Having passed Dubrovnik we headed for Hotel Osmine which is about 25 miles south of Dubrovnik. It's not too hard to find, but you must keep the eyeballs wide open otherwise you will have passed it before you know. The hotel lies hidden off the road in a bay. We asked a very friendly girl at the desk for a room. Her answer was that it was with full board, but upon saying that we were just passing through, she said we could stay and have our meals a Ia carte.

Our room was a large one with shower, bath and a balcony overlooking the bay with the mountains in the background. What a marvellous sight it was. As it was already 4 o'clock in the afternoon, we hastened ourselves to the beach to have a swim after our sticky day's drive. The water was still chilly (May) but it was sure refreshing.

Before we had our meal we had something to drink and again as I have observed before in camping, 90% of the German naturists dress up for the evening meal, some even go to the hairdresser before. Now I ask you, this has nothing to do with Naturism. Actually it's crazy if you look at it closely. During the day they are naked but before the meal everyone has to look like they are going to the Ambassadors Ball, Mona and I found this ridiculous and not "Natural".

When we came to the restaurant I found a nice spot near a window. However, I soon realized that every table had a number on it, so we quickly reported ourselves to the headwaiter.

"A Ia carte is not possible tonight, this is a gala evening, only one meal, no choice," he said. So he put us at a table without a number. Soon a band began to play, not too loud thank goodness and we swallowed one course after another. What we also noticed is that these naturists like to take photos when their spouses are dressed. After our stomachs were full we left this rather noisy unnatural affair.

Now for those who would like to spend a holiday in this beautiful area, the hotel is first class, the grounds are nicely laid out with a playground for the kiddies. There are organised boat trips or take your own boat with you. Dubrovnik is worthwhile visiting.

We paid 310 dinars for one night and that includes breakfast. One dinar is equal to five cents American. It is best to take a package tour or reserve beforehand.

Our second hotel was called Allan. It was older and located near Starigrad. It was a combination of hotel - campground. We tried the hotel. The room was clean, with a bath-shower, a balcony looking out over the sea on one side and the other a view of the mountains. There was a pebble beach, volleyball courts, mini golf course, colour T.V. in the lounge, table tennis, billiards and tennis, so there was lots to do if you felt like it.

The restaurant was simple and so was the food, but very good. One problem encountered was that they had one waiter to take all the wine or beer orders for about 80 people, while the other waiters made sure you had your meal within 5 minutes. The result was that you got your wine after your meal, and that of course is not the idea of table wine. But apart from that all went fine. Dressed naturists again of course.

For those who camped there was a large camp store and a smaller one taking its place when it closed. The hotel has a courtesy car to pick you up from the airport if you wished.

The young man behind the desk at the hotel could be a bit more interested in his customers, but maybe we caught him on a bad day. Hotel Allan cost 220 dinars a day, breakfast included. For those who liked to put up their tent or park their caravan, there was lots of space with pleasant surroundings.

I do not know if it is forbidden by law to shop or to eat one's meal in a restaurant in the nude, but I do not find it very Naturistic at all, to go to a nudist resort and have to dress.

We just cannot seem to get away from our daily living habits and our clothes. If this is the behaviour of a Naturist of 1979, then let us watch out that it does not become too commercial, because that way people are stripping us from our Naturism, bit by bit.

A real Naturist does not go to a place to dress up, but to expose his or her body to the sun, air and Mother Earth.

CAPITAL PLACE FOR A RALLY:

Memories of 1976/77, the wettest holiday period in Wellington's history, should have faded by now. We hope so, because Wellington Sun Club are your hosts for the 79/80 National Rally, and members are already working hard to ensure that all who come to us have a most enjoyable and memorable holiday. The format will be broadly similar to that of recent years (with the addition of some entertaining 'wrinkles' of our own), and we hope to bring in a nationally known personality to open the proceedings.

Application forms are to be sent out to all club secretaries in the near future and the spring issue of the 'Naturist' will bring you further news to whet your appetites.

The N.Z.N.F. delegates meeting will take place on Saturday, December 29th, with the Rally proper running from Sunday 30th to Thursday 3rd, inclusive.

The basic cost, or Rally fee, will be $18.00 per adult, and this will cover admission to, and food at, all functions during the five days. Your only necessary expenses will be for personal everyday food and drink requirements.

The grounds have been intensively remodeled since the last Rally, and the bottom camping area has been enlarged and improved. It is intended that screening will permit nudity everywhere on the club grounds except the entrance car park. The club will provide electric power to as many sites as humanly possible, but we must warn that we cannot guarantee this amenity to everyone, so it would be wise to arrange for alternative means of lighting and cooking for yourselves.

Anyway, start pestering your secretary for the application form, sort out your gear, look for the latest news in the 'Naturist', and then after Christmas beat a path to our gate.

We promise you a warm welcome.

79/80 Rally Committee

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

At this stage the movement is in good heart, most clubs are showing an increase in membership, in one case 105%. The Free Beach Group is growing at an even greater rate and providing we show the world a united front, the establishment of official Free Beaches is within our grasp. Overseas experience has shown that membership of clubs has grown with increasing public acceptance of Free Beaches.

The N.Z.N.F. is committed to the changing of the Police Offences Act, but this seems to be a longer job than was at first thought. In the meantime, the continued use of beaches is essential to keep the public acceptance that we already have.

WOMEN'S REPRESENTATIVE REPORT by Hanna Rencher

In this day of emancipation of women and equality with men, there are still things which are naturally peculiar to women and best left to them.

Privacy of the individual is not restricted to one sex. The right to invite one's friends or contemporaries to a gathering must be inviolable. Gate crashing a party is frowned upon, why not any other meeting of people.

Of course I am referring to the women's gathering at the rally which has been very enjoyable in the past. A pity it has been spoilt by males who can't bear to think that they are missing something.

THE POOL ON THE HILL: WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good. Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow: - Ronald E. Osborn.

We had been planning for ages it seemed, then suddenly it was upon us. The pool opening was only a week away and we still had so much to do. The concrete mixer went full blast and Rick kept rushing around trying to find metric blocks amongst the imperial ones. The girls gave the clubhouse a special clean up and woe, they found some paint, which was catastrophic. Nearly everything that didn't move was given a brand new coat. The colour scheme was non existent, but everything was clean and bright. Afternoon tea was rather hazardous, no-one could move without the shriek of "Mind that's wet."

Neil put in the boxing for the steps from the children's area to the pool and concrete was ferried by any willing strong person able to balance a barrow.

On the Tuesday, the hair-raising pace was maintained and the whole club looked just the way we had planned it. The grass was mown and the painting continued, we just could not believe at what had been achieved. All we had to do was pray for fine weather.

Early Friday afternoon several of us set up the marquee and we presumed the next arrivals would be our own club members. We were wrong, for suddenly, people in cars with tents, caravans, and even a boat in tow appeared. The last arrivals that day presented themselves just after midnight, and what a night, there was misty rain in between the showers and we dreaded what the morning would bring.

Saturday morning started beautifully although later in the day a brisk wind sprang up and quite a few of us kept partially clothed. More visitors arrived and unfortunately we never managed a head count, but vehicles counted by Les resulted in six campermatics, eleven caravans, sixteen tents and the marquee accommodated ten people and a motorbike. We also had 77 cars in the car park.

The hangi fire was lit, but all was not well. Stan & Muriel's motor caravan had broken down by the bridge and Stan had gone back to get some spares and had locked the van, which had the hangi sheets inside. Fate wasn't too unkind, Stan's van was brought back to a mobile state and the hangi went in a little late which gave the rocks plenty of time to get really hot.

Neil arrived complete with a new seesaw for the children's area and later someone counted as many as 10 children aboard.

Practically every club from the northern half of the island were represented and we were thrilled by the response.

The Pool Opening went swimmingly. Rick opened the speeches with a history of the club and the work that has gone on over the years to bring it to it's present state. The President of the New Zealand Nudist Federation, Ron Rencher expressed the pleasure felt by the N.Z.N.F. that we had accomplished our major building feat and assured us that this would now be the focal point on our grounds. Mr Allan, Principal of the Waikato Teachers Training College, having stated that he had come to do some research on nudism, carried on with a description of various reasons why clothing had become the norm and concluded that it appeared to him that we had chosen a healthy way of leisure:- one which could not harm those people who did not wish to join us. During the speeches the children sat with their feet in the pool and as Mr Allan cut the ribbon they celebrated the Year of the Child by being first in, followed soon after by Rick and johnnie - our two 'big' children.

Afternoon tea was served and soon after the children's fancy dress parade was held, judged by Mabel. Adam and Eve appeared a couple of times, some blonde polynesians, and of course the little D.B. Queen from North Shore, it's impossible to mention them all.

On Saturday John M. from Hawkes Bay was discovered having a blue fit, - he had queued up for a cubicle, heard the flush and a little girl came out. Imagine his surprise on entering to find a little boy ensconced. Unisex toilets with a vengeance.

The hangi was opened up and we wondered whether it was going to last out, there seemed to be an unending queue. Our fears were allayed by the time seconds were served. It was delicious and not a complaint was heard.

Later a large tarpaulin was laid out and the disco was underway. We all thought we were tired but the music gave us second wind and sitting with the lights of Hamilton below made quite a scene. The DJ from Taranaki kept our feet tapping even though we didn't have the strength to get up and gyrate.

Sunday dawned fine and clear, though most of us looked a bit fuzzy around the edges. The skirl of the pipes was an alarm clock that would wake the dead or those that tend to sleep to long.

Gradually all our visitors packed up and made the rounds of goodbyes. They seemed to have enjoyed themselves as we enjoyed having them.

LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

I wish to defend the original proponents of the free area in the ACT. against the attacks on their efforts by the "Johnny Come Latelys" who now enjoy the legal free area won for them.

The critics are accusing these dedicated pioneers of not having more foresight and a better knowledge of what a free beach should be, and being related to one of those involved in the successful action by the original Canberra Nudist Group in 1975 this unjustified insult is a real hit below the belt to all those persons concerned.

There are no experts fighting for free beaches, just people with determination and purpose, pitting themselves against intolerance, prejudice and the deep- seated attitudes not only against the naked body but also against individual freedom.

After the Australian Nudist Federation campaign for free beaches began in 1972, clubs and individuals faced what seemed an impossible task to free the beaches for nude bathing. With only limited information and resources and the exchange of ideas via the New Zealand Naturist, they increased their knowledge with each encounter with authorities.

The fact that laws that have existed for perhaps hundreds of years, have been changed by people with small resources using their own time and money demonstrates what can be achieved by all those who believe that what they are fighting for is right!

It is disappointing to read in the New Zealand Naturist destructive attempts to belittle those who helped gain a legal free area in the A.C.T., including the past A.N.F. Secretary Mary Weston who in all her years of service to Corio, the Nudist Association of Victoria and the Australian Nudist Federation has never "hidden behind the tin fence" as suggested by the writers.

On the 19th August 1975 the ACT. Legislative Assembly Standing Committee of City Management in its Report on nude bathing in the A.C.T. stated that they had received 31 submissions for the proposal of which only three were against the concept.

The area that was subsequently designated was understood by the Committee to be popular with nudists as it was favoured by the majority of the respondents as the suitable site. The report stated that if the numbers using the site built up to a considerable degree, consideration would be given to increasing the facilities available. (This of course we know has happened). The report also stated that a further site may also need to be considered.

It is quite obvious that the original activists for this area did their best and we all owe them at least a vote of thanks for their efforts on our behalf.

To conclude I quote Mark Twain.

"Human race is divided into two classes, Those who go ahead and do something, and those Who sit back and ask, "Why wasn't it done the other way?"

To Maureen Worsley MLA, Keith & Mo Wedd, and your many club members of that time, the general public who ably supported you, Mary Weston and the A.N.F., congratulations to one and all.

I trust this now placed the matter in its correct perspective, and that the New Zealand Naturist will be used in future in a constructive way rather than destructive.

Ted Weston

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to state my objection to the centre page photo in Issue 89. This photograph does not depict nudism in the sense that one sheds one's clothes for convenience and comfort, and to enjoy the benefits of sunshine and air, or water on one's body.

It is an example of exhibitionism when the body is displayed to attract attention. In this case to draw attention to female sexuality, we are shown a lovely body, of which the owner has reason to be proud; but with the lei emphasizing the bosom, the full frontal posture with the pubic hair removed, together with the mock modest attitude and corresponding facial expression, the personality of the woman as a total human being is quite lost in the invitation to look at her sex.

Of course sex as a perfectly normal part of the human physique is right and proper, except that like other human attributes the manner of its use can make of it a social blessing or a curse. However the point I am making is that sex is only a part of the total human being and Nudist Clubs, as I understand their constitution in New Zealand, are not sex clubs where nudity is used as a play for sexual titillation. Instead they are places where one can discard one's clothes without giving embarrassment to others or by being embarrassed by the lewd stares of over-interested onlookers.

Nudity can be a pleasant and healthy way of enjoying outdoor recreations and since it is part of our humanity to be gregarious, we like to share our enjoyment with like-minded others. It is also an effort to break away from those ancient taboos of our culture (and shared by other cultures too) that associated the baring of the body in the presence of another as an invitation to sexual activity and this notion has been particularly strongly fostered in the case of the female. By breaking away from this limited perception towards nudity, and by adopting a more generalised outlook, the Naturist also hopes through his or her recreational activity to improve social relationships between the sexes.

The photograph on the centre page of your December Issue is therefore quite objectionable. In it a woman is being used as a sex object and her beauty exploited to pander to that section of the public who cannot or do not wish to see a woman as a total thinking human being, but rather as a body by which they can assess her ability to provide sexual stimulation and excitement.

I stress again sex is only a part of the total human engrossment in society, and although private sexual relationships may be improved by the naturists overall attitude to the human body and the nature of their outdoor recreation, so can many other aspects of their social involvement.

I.E. Sandford

Dear Sir,

Your December Issue No. 89 had some lovely photographs in it. The one on page 14, in colour would be nice for the front, centre or back page. The centre-page is very lovely and shows that mature figures without pubic hair can look very nice and modest without giving offence to the purists who possibly prefer the hairy look.

I wonder how many real naturists are going to comment unfavourably! Anyway you cannot please everyone all the time.

Dick Van der Vliet,
A. C. T.

Dear Sir,

The freedom to go about our life nude is the ideal which forms the basis of the Nudist movement. This was expressed so admirably by "Freedom" in the March issue (No. 90) when he described the idyllic life he leads but of which most of us just dream.

The nudist movement as illustrated by the New Zealand Nudist Federation and its member clubs is an example of a typical New Zealand approach to achieving a dream - form a committee and make rules to govern and organise the members in fulfillment of their objectives. The only problem is that the rules and the organisation seem to become more important than the purpose.

"Freedom" however typifies the cherished belief that we are a nation of "doers" in that he wanted to be free of his clothes, so he did it. He does not require the label "nudist" or permission to do it from any authority, or instructions from any committee on how to do it. He just does it.

The Free Beach Group falls somewhere between the two. It attempts to avoid organisation but as it supports the general concepts of furthering nudism, it feels it should join the fold of the N.Z.N.F.

Does nudism in the form of free beaches need promotion or rules? Free beaches are a fact of life in N.Z. People the like of "Freedom" are doing their thing without harassment from the Police, the general public or "do gooding" committee members. Judge Wilson gave the protection from the Police by defining the prerequisites of avoiding prosecution. The general public accept the right of the individual to his freedom as long as there is no interference with their equal rights, so all that there is to be done is to avoid the third construction - the self imposed organisation.

In questioning the need for organisation I may be reflecting the change in circumstances which has allowed the freedom of the individual. If so, the organisation should reciprocate by taking a hard look at its policy and answer the question - are changes to, or extra laws necessary? I fear not. The individual who is prepared to accept the responsibility for his own actions has the freedom he needs. Let us not destroy or complicate this freedom but be positive in action to defend it.

Trevor Sampson.

Dear Sir,

It was great to see such a beautiful example of female pubic depilation in your centre pages of No. 89. What a pity we do not see more of this, as it certainly improves the looks of all. I would like to see in some future editions photographs of men who practice depilation. After depilating for many years, I can only say, that it is much cleaner and better looking.

For those who would like to start depilating, I would recommend plucking, not shaving, as it does not require to be done as often and there is no sharp stubble or re-growth. If plucking is done after a hot bath it hurts very little. After a few times the hairs come out easily and you don't feel it.

Congratulations, a good magazine, very well compiled.

R.D.S., Melbourne.

Dear Sir,

As the proprietor of Sunshine Families Nudist Holiday Ranch in Queensland, I am writing to let you know what a great response we have had by advertising in your magazine. We have not advertised in local newspapers since we started our block adverts in your magazine, in Edition No. 89, and we have received enquiries from all over Australia and New Zealand from future holiday makers and people who have never been in a Nudist environment, but are keen to find out what we are all about.

I thank you and your staff for your work and dedication in the past and future.

To the secretaries and proprietors of other clubs especially in Australia I urge you to take advantage of advertising in this fine magazine. There are twenty six clubs in Australia yet only two or three ever bother to use the Australian News Section. So come on Aussies, your newsletters only reach your members and other clubs. This magazine reaches the public!

THE A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB

New Zealanders asked the representatives of the Australian Capital Territory Nudist Club in Canberra many questions about our Club at the recent rally in Christchurch. The questions arose because the Club has been operating in a manner very different from the more established conventional clubs. It was suggested that the answers may be of general interest, and that they could help other clubs forming.

The ACT NC has been operating without land since it started. Because of the land ownership laws in the ACT, the Club must obtain a lease of land from the sole owner, the government, which controls what goes on land and where it goes. The Club presently is attempting to acquire land through a government lease, but it has now operated quite successfully without land for more than three years. How?

With a membership of about two hundred adults, the Club has provided an extensive social programme throughout the year. A heated indoor swimming pool complex, complete with gymnasium and saunas, all completely booked by the club, provides the weekly Saturday evening meeting place. The Club also hires other public facilities (openly and in the name of the Club) to meet all other needs. Scout halls, school gymnasium for volleyball, squash courts etc are hired as necessary. The weekly swim night is most popular, with numbers averaging 60-70 adults and uncountable children, even in the depths of winter.

Although something of a necessity, it has been found that the hiring of facilities as required has a great point in its favour: as activities wax strong or wane in popularity, different facilities may be hired. There is no maintenance, and no expenditure on facilities no longer required. Conversely, the Club is sometimes restricted in the availability of facilities, depending on the needs of other users.

The monthly Club newsletter is a very important part of the successful operation of the ACT Nudist Club. We feel that good communication is essential to inform members and give cohesion, especially in the absence of land. The Newsletter provides notes about all subjects of interest to the members and the details of the next two months' social programmes. Forward planning of social events is therefore essential. We have preferred to have a large number of socials, some of which may be of minority interest, rather than have fewer no functions.

Because Canberra is a relatively new city with a population that has been brought in, there is a family vacuum, as most people lack close relatives nearby. This is especially so for Canberra's large numbers of single people. Many of the population are also relatively transient, because of the nature of their work, and thus have a special need for a group to identify with. We find that, maybe as a result, members tend to respond to family type functions where children can be brought.

Canberra also has a legal free beach at our doorstep at Kambah Pool on the Murrumbidgee River. This is very important to our members, although Club members would make up less than one tenth of beach users. The beach is a major recruiting point. Members tend to wear their Club badges to the beach; the badges attract attention, and the questions inevitably come around to what does a beach user do during Canberra's long cold winter. Enter the Club.

In short, the ACT Nudist Club has found that it has been able to operate very successfully without land with a tin fence around it. Indeed, we feel the lack of land has kept us on our toes, and forced us to critically examine the way we operate and the relationship of nudist clubs to society. We can recommend that other Clubs have a look over their fence, and organise a series of 'outside' events.

The ACT Nudist Club hopes to soon acquire land; our members are very determined to maintain our Club's character, and to ensure that we do not retire onto that land and retreat from the world completely.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

Well winter is upon us, but summer is just around the corner and that is what most club members and fellow nudists are waiting for.

Our grounds are looking good for the coming summer after having to clean up after a storm in late March. But the firewood is always needed for the barbeque and the hot tub.

We have had some terrific evening socials at a number of homes around the Bay.

It seems to be the trend that where the corks pop you will find a blue bird and a yellow bird with a glass in hand.

Last but not least is the preparations for our Annual Cabaret, which are well under way. The theme is: Back to the 50's.

Hope you can come and enjoy this evening with us in the Bay.

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB

Wellington is enthusiastically preparing for the 28th National Rally. Our keen organiser Ad. has a willing band of helpers already preparing for "Gumboot Rally Mark II". This, coupled with a new management committee, promises all New Zealand and overseas nudists the best Rally yet.

In the course of preparing our grounds, our sewerage system has been completed, lawns have been extended, more power points have been installed, the clubhouse has continued to be worked on and the whole area is much improved.

Members who attended the last Wellington Rally will be able to see a vast improvement and we have no doubt the weather will be one of these improvements we can work on in the remainder of the year.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC:

A new committee has taken office, with commitment different from the past year. The previous committee had the task to have everything ready for the rally. Now has come the task of running an ever growing club in a relatively quiet year.

The maintenance of our facilities has made an increase in subs unavoidable. These subs have been steady for three years, while inflation kept reducing the value to where it is now, just over half of three years ago.

An attempt is also being made, to get children consciously involved in our club and nudism. Up to now they were just part of the family unit. Children hold the future of the club and now will get more attention as a group as such, very much like N.Y.C. but in a more "childish" way.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

We have been hosts to both S.A.N.C. and A.O.H.C. for volleyball sports days, which were well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks to both these clubs for their wonderful spirit and friendliness.

Our new clubhouse is coming on nicely, at least we now have a roof over our heads, and hope to continue to work under cover over the winter period.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

SUNSHINE FAMILIES:

Hi Friends,

The weather has started to get a cold nip in it now that winter is with us.

We recently finished our first concrete miniten court and it is a great improvement on the other two granite courts. So it looks like we will soon be getting our concrete mixer out again, and with our merry band of workers complete the other two.

Our new pool table, pig skin dart board, and table tennis table have had almost constant use, and the money gained from them at 20 cents per game will go towards the purchase of other indoor sporting facilities.

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB INC.

Winter may be coming fast (it will be here when this comes out), but it's been a great Summer and Autumn weather-wise. Our members have really made the most of it, and some pretty good suntans are apparent at our weekly swim and sauna nights. Possibly the now legalised extension to the Kambah Pool free beach has helped.

Collectively, the Club has also been making the most of the weather. For the first time, we entered a float in the Canberra Day procession. It may sound a bit immodest (who, US?) but we think it went pretty well. The truck was covered with Signs 'bare with us', 'Nudism - be in it, a family activity' and so on. Not to mention plenty of members. It all raised a good cheer from the crowd along the way.

Other activities have been an 'Ides of March' party, a Valentine Party and a car rally. Of course, our members have also been out and about, and groups have visited other clubs over the Easter break. We are still working on our land problem with the Government but one day we'll have our own camping facilities. In May we'll be three years old - where has the time gone? One thing is sure, the Club is still progressing well, and still gives a warm welcome to any visiting nudists passing through the A.C.T. Just contact us at Box 242, Woden, 2606, and we'll take it from there.

MAPUA

N.Z. First "Dress Optional" Motor Camp-leisure Park:- Pat Trott

We are pleased to announce N.Z.'s first "Dress Optional" Holiday Complex has been started at Mapua, Nelson. To clear up any misunderstanding we feel we should state in detail how our project was launched.

At the Executive meeting held at Pineglades during Rally 78 - 79 the Nelson delegate Alan Ramus presented to the meeting photos and details of a property for sale at Mapua, Nelson. The asking price was $200,000. The meeting showed no interest in the proposition but Ian Fairbrother and I thought the property was worthy of a closer inspection. We found it a beautiful tree studded site. Already established on the property were motel units, house, asphalt tennis court, filtered swimming pool and its own white sandy beach. It is on a peninsula reached by a private causeway and the view from the beach is across a lovely stretch of water to the pine forest of Rabbit Island - an ideal place for a Nudist Resort.

It was decided to form a company to finance the purchase and development of the property. Various nudists were approached and the company finally formed consists of Kathy & Pat Trott, (C.S.C.); Jennifer & Ian Fairbrother, (G.S.C.); Margaret & Neil Clark, (A.O.H.C.); Caroline &John Hanson, (A.O.H.C.); Jan & Graham Scandlyn, (G.S.C.); Peter Phin (G.S.C.); Joan & Ken Nice (F.B.A.). Further shares are available to be allocated. (The minimum investment per group or family is $5,000.

MAPUA LEISURE PARK LTD. was formed to operate on a "Dress Optional" basis. It is not exclusively for nudists. We hope to encourage the public to come to the Park where they have the option of not wearing clothes. Such camps operate in Europe and Australia very successfully.

Mapua is only 34 km from Nelson Post Office and reached by tarsealed road on the main highway to Motueka. The park entrance is over a private causeway.

Mapua Leisure Park has its own boat ramp. The estuary is ideal for water skiing and fish are there for the taking.

It is intended to have ready by Christmas - Miniten Courts, Concrete swimming pools, Hot Spa Pool, Caravan Points, Camping Sites, Shop and children's Play Area with trampolines etc.

Our first gathering was at Easter; ten families from several Nudist Clubs enjoyed a wonderful long sunny weekend. They confirmed our view of the area and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. A large number of Nelson Sun Club members joined us on Sunday and wished us all the best in our venture.

We hope a happy relationship will develop with the N.Z.N.F. We have applied for some form of Associate Membership at the ½ Annual Meeting of the Federation at Taupo.

Members of the public visiting us will be encouraged to enquire about joining clubs in their own towns on returning home.

When we learned that Palmerston North had turned down the opportunity to stage the 1979-80 rally we offered to hold it at Mapua. However the Wellington Club subsequently lodged an application which was accepted. We wish them all the best for a good turn-out and hope fellow nudists will come to Mapua after the Rally is over to see what we have to offer. The Australian contingent have indicated they will be over to see us.

Our aim is to promote Nudism and give the public and nudists the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed holiday in grounds that offer a wide variety of interesting activities in a friendly atmosphere by the sea and in the sun at Mapua.

NUDIST ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND:

FIRST SOCIAL SPORTS CONVENTION: Peter Beerens

Sunshine Families are proud to report that they were the hosts for the Nudist Association of Queensland's very first sports convention over the four day holiday at Easter.

There was a good attendance from members of The Three Bears, Sun Leisure, Pacific, Good Companions and of course Sunshine Families. We also had visitors from Latrobe Valley Nudist Club; Victoria, Sunseekers; Western Australia and a few non-club visitors.

The weather was against us right from the start, but it didn't stop us all from having a great time.

Unfortunately the Archery and Swimming had to be cancelled because of the rain and the cold weather, but the miniten, volleyball and petanque tournaments went smoothly even though a couple of the games were played in the rain.

The results of the games played were won by:

Volleyball: Sunshine Families

Petanque: Sun Leisure

Mixed Miniten Doubles: Good Companions

Men's Miniten Doubles: Good Companions

Women's Miniten Doubles: Sunshine Families

Junior Mixed Miniten Doubles: Sunshine

Junior Boys Miniten Doubles: Sunshine

Sunshine Families won the Senior and Junior club of the year trophy.

We sincerely thank all those people who attended and competed so strongly in the sporting activities, and hope they all enjoyed themselves as much as we did. We must apologise however for the cold showers, our solar heating system could not cope with the demand without the sunshine.

I received a press clipping from Aussie and I let you make your own minds up about it. I quote: -

"With reference to nude bathing on Reef Beach, or any other beach, the really serious problem is not necessarily the nudity itself. There is another aspect to be considered: - that of the spread of disease.

AUSTRALIAN NUDIST FEDERATION REPORT

As we now move into 1979 it is becoming vividly evident to us at the ANE executive that nudism is flowering and growing quite strongly throughout Australia. A recent two page article entitled "Australia in the Raw" and dealt purely with nude beaches or optional dress areas, drew a great deal of favourable comment from across Australia and demonstrated to us that nudists belong not only to clubs but do operate singularly or in small groups at "their" geographical locations. Our role in the promotion of nudism must always be catering to the needs of nudists outside the club environment.

The 11th Annual Convention and sports rally will be held at Bangalee Nudist Holiday Village, Tocumwal NSW on the Murray River. The facilities established at the club already include 80 powered sites, full shop facilities, games courts, 18 toilets, 16 showers, bar-b-ques, beaches river frontages and even more to come in the form of cabins, swimming lake, fishing lake (750 x 300mm) more powered sites and lots of things to do when we have an idle day. Bearing in mind the club has only been established for two years the size of the facilities already achieved, is incredible.

This year, some clubs affiliated to the ANF shall be celebrating some memorable occasions in their histories. Helios Society in Victoria will be celebrating their 21st birthday, quite an achievement in any club's history. The Rosco Club have celebrated their official opening at their new grounds, which incidentally, are quite magnificent considering that they have only been at their new site for just over 12 months now. Already they have established a clubhouse, large filtered swimming pool, toilet and shower facilities as well as the regular games courts and all members can enjoy the luxury of powered sites. Phoenix have also been busy in the last four to five years getting their own grounds. Now they have succeeded in obtaining a 25 acre site at Hoddles Creek.

Another club to achieve a milestone in their history is the ACT Club who are at present busy cleaning up all the messy negotiations with the Department of Capital Territory for their own club grounds. They have persevered quite patiently with bureaucratic red tape and now appear to be over the major obstacles - apathy and non-committed decision, by the large Government departments they are required to deal with. Being typical of most clubs in Australia the committee and members of the ACT are totally devoted to their nudist cause and due to this virtue shall emerge as victorious recipient of their own grounds in the nation's capital.

Throughout these events and other happenings in clubs throughout Australia, the ANF is always observing and noting our nudist progression.

It would be nice to be in a position to report that matters regarding the free beach campaign in Melbourne has been progressive. The truth is that our campaign has not progressed any further in a positive nature. In fact recently two women were convicted of bathing nude at Red Bluff, Sandringham and gaoled for three days. The convictions certainly do not help our campaign and makes one wonder whether in fact the authorities really do know what the campaign is all about. On numerous occasions and repeated assurances that the police will be sympathetic we continually see large numbers of police going well out of their way to catch offenders. On all occasions the police prefer charges in which they claim they were offended, yet they have gone a long way from their normal route to traverse the rocky outcrops to get to the beach used by nudists. It's a strange world where the police are instructed to go out of their way to be in a position where they could be offended as they claim, a very frustrating situation indeed.

As winter sets upon us, many club nudists will be kept quite busy doing all those odd jobs abound the clubs whilst others will be taking advantage of sauna and swim nights and all will be eagerly awaiting "our" season - summer.

Wishing all Kiwi's a not too cold winter and hope to meet some of you at Bangalee when you come over.

Yours in nudism.

Peter Rowsell
Secretary
