EDITORIAL

Greetings to you all! After two guest editorials and a team editorial, it is back to me again for the opening words.

This is the sixth issue published by your present editorial team. It has four more pages than previous issues and if circulation keeps building up as it is then we hope to make more improvements in future.

We believe the style and content of our magazine is reflective of the contemporary scene in the second half of the nineteen seventies. While there is still room for improvement, we believe we are on the right track. Thank-you for all your support.

Have Fun in the Sun.

OBITUARY

ALEC THOMPSON CALEY

The Waikato Outdoor Society sorrowfully mark the passing of ALEC THOMPSON CALEY on the 21st June at the age of 66 years.

Alec, a veteran of Crete and the Middle East; serving with the 2nd N.Z.E.F., joined the Club in April 1968, he served a term as our President, one time Delegate to the N.Z.S.A., and was always at hand to give us the benefit of his wisdom and experience. Alec was also a member of a three man team exploring the possibility of obtaining land for the movement on which to build a national Nudist Recreational Centre.

He is survived by his Wife "Bobbie", three children and four grandchildren, to whom we extend our sincere and deep sympathy at their sad loss. Alec will be greatly missed in his Club and Movement as a whole...

THE PHANTOM PAINTER

PART TWO

A meeting was held of suitable members keen to undertake the thankless job of watching and waiting between late October and Christmas.

Enthusiasm and determination were running high.

We tried to keep what was happening fairly quiet for obvious reasons. This was difficult, especially when a minority of members were going to extraordinary lengths to find out what was going on.

We were not sure of the identity of our vandal or whether he had connections with the Club.

It was decided that on Saturday and Monday nights our team would be stronger if possible as these seemed to be the Phantom's favourite nights.

With the help of an ingenious member electrician, an elaborate alarm system was set up. We realised that communication was going to play a vital part in the over-all plan, so enough walkie-talkies were obtained to equip everyone on watch.

After piecing together what limited information we had gathered on the movements of the Phantom, it was decided that the next Saturday night we would carry out a dummy run, so that all systems could be tested and everybody would know what was expected of them.

We were now ready for the real thing.

Tension was starting to build. Cars coming into the grounds late at night were noted and cleared. We had a member staying on the grounds with a motor cycle and every time he came in late he caused some anxious moments when a new team was on duty.

After three weeks of watching and waiting the strain was starting to tell. One of the problems encountered by the security team was sheer boredom; however, some watchers were suitably placed to suck at the occasional bottle of soft drink.

One member was abused for going to sleep and not answering to the call. This was hotly denied. "Impossible", he said,"when there is an opossum that keeps coming up and sniffing my feet". On closer investigation it was found that the batteries in his walkie-talkie had gone flat. All was forgiven.

One night we were short of a watchman who told us at the last minute he couldn't make it. We were unable to get a replacement from our task force.

Club members generally were excellent in their response when called upon. However, you always get the exception. One said he wouldn't help tonight, tomorrow night, or any other night. One wife came to me and said she didn't approve of her husband being a bodyguard, so he had to be relieved of his duty - by a man. These were, however isolated incidents, totally contrary to Club spirit; most nights we were able to get a full muster of good keen members who had the Club at heart and only one goal in mind - to catch the offender before Christmas.

The fourth week was one of particularly bad weather. Each night seemed to hold great prospects, but then ended up with a blank. Although our enthusiasm and morale were still high, it was getting to the stage where it was now a case of whether our dedication and determination would continue and carry the day.

Into the sixth week and now light until 9.30 p.m. Enthusiasm was starting to wane. The general feeling was that after six weeks continuous watching, he would leave us alone until after Christmas. It was decided to taper down the watches. As from the next week-end, members were starting to camp on the grounds and could play their parts if given a walkie-talkie to keep in their tent or caravan.

On Tuesday night, the 5th of December, it happened.

I was awakened by an alarm which had been set off. I checked my watch; it was after twelve mid-night - the task force had left. My wife checked the phone - it was dead. We knew the Phantom was on the grounds.

As I put on my gum-boots and parka, picked up my waddie and adjusted my walkie-talkie, Gillian had positioned herself by the phone.

On venturing outside I found it to be a beautiful, clear night; no wind, rain or clouds and no cover. Following a predetermined plan, my first job was to fix the phone. I made my way quickly and quietly down to the back of Han's bach and across the road to the trees behind the phone box. I paused and listened, but could hear and see nothing. I made my way into the phone box. Sure enough, the receiver had been torn out. On fixing the phone I called Gillian on the walkie-talkie and told her it was for real - "call the police". Back came the reply, "Received."

Knowing the police would shortly be own their way, I headed for Derrick's tent in Arthur's Park to get assistance I didn't know at this stage whether the Phantom had damaged the phone on his way in or out of the grounds.

When I was close to the club-house I stopped and looked across the front, as the outside lights were on. There was no sign of movement or visible damage.

On reaching the tent and waking Derrick, I told him that we had a visitor. From the tent we moved to the pine trees beside the road for cover. At first we could see nothing.

Then he appeared by the kitchen spraying paint merrily. The night was so still we could actually hear the hiss of the aerosol can.

Our main job was to identify him. This we couldn't do. He appeared briefly again behind the soft-drink shed, then disappeared. We strained our ears for the sound of the aerosol can again but could hear nothing. The same thought crossed our minds. Had he heard or seen us?

I told Derrick I was going to move in on him around the front of the club-house. Derrick said he would stay where he was and watch the back

Moving along under the verandah in my gum-boots, I didn't actually sound like a ballet dancer, so I decided to run for it, using the element of surprise, around the side of the club-house by the shop to the shed.

To my sheer disappointment, there was no sign of our friend, only the damage. As Derrick was covering the other side and back, I decided to run down to the car park as I was sure he had about thirty seconds on me.

When I reached the end of the car park, I stopped dead and listened for any sort of noise or movement, but there was nothing apart from my heavy breathing and pounding heart.

The thought went through my mind, "had he given me the slip?", "had I let the team down by a few seconds, after all our waiting and watching?"

I decided to head back to the club-house. On turning around I sighted him running across the car park with more than a little speed on, heading for the bamboo at the back. He had obviously decided that I had continued down the back road and it was safe for him to make a run for it. Immediately I gave chase. When I was about thirty yards from him, he dived through the bamboo. I went through from where I was. Once on the other side in the clear, I looked down between the bamboo and the fence. There was no movement or noise; he was obviously sheltering.

Now I moved quickly and cautiously down the bamboo towards Arthur's Park, After moving about twenty paces he came out at me. There was a brief encounter. Realising he was cornered, he made a desperate lunge at the fence for freedom, but to no avail. Verbal exchange followed. By this time Derrick had heard the commotion and was on the other side of the bamboo. The Phantom knew there was more than one. However, he was still not prepared to give up. Although I was now only three feet away from him, I still could not positively identify him in the shadows of the bamboo.

Realising the police would be fairly close it was now a matter of playing for time.

I talked to him, trying to persuade him to give himself up. After five tense minutes, he decided to come with me to the club-house to talk things over. I had convinced him I couldn't call the police because he had wrecked the phone.

Walking the length of the bamboo with him, we finally met Derrick in the car park. When we reached the club house I noticed a flashing light coming across the grounds. It was to me a most welcome sight. The police had arrived. After close questioning, the Phantom decided to admit the offences and was arrested.

After nine months of frustration for the Club, the Phantom's luck had finally run out.

PHOTOGRAPHING THE NUDE by JOHN BYRNE

PART ONE: THE MODEL

HOW TO FIND A MODEL

Finding a nude model is usually a problem for most amateur photographers, especially in New Zealand, where models willing to bare all are more difficult to obtain than in most other Western countries. The novice photographer should not overlook his friends - the girl at work, the girl next-door and the girlfriend are all potential models. He may be fortunate in knowing art students, former models or naturist club members who might be willing to pose nude for him. The other alternative is the model agency. A professional model is expensive but she knows how to pose and she could make suggestions that could save time and money. At least one model agency listed in the Yellow Pages undertakes nude assignments. In addition, my agency 'Barhona' caters primarily for nude photography. DO NOT approach a strange young lady in the street. Although women's attitudes toward nudity have changed dramatically in the last few years, I have found that this technique has put off many a would-be nude model.

Before you actually hire a model, be certain of the type of nude photography you will be involved with. Is it studio classic figure studies, contemporary glamour-nude photography or outdoor naturist work? There is no figure type better than others, for all bodies are beautiful. The choice of model is, therefore, one of taste. If you are one of those gentlemen who prefer blondes, then look for a blonde model. The subject in front of the photographer's lens must appeal to him before he can create any work which appeals to others.

HOW TO WORK WITH A MODEL

The relationship between the model and the photographer is of primary importance. It is one of mutual respect and on the model's part the desire to present her best image at all times. Arrange an interview with your model. Let her know what you're trying to achieve by showing her magazine cuttings or sketches of the type of picture you're trying to create. Then set a date for your Test Shots. This will enable you to discover the model's weaknesses and strengths. Study the prints after photography.

When working with the model, it is important to give frequent encouragement and to make the young lady aware of your confidence in her. Keep your model happy, ask her to work with you rather than for you. I find that music is a great help in relaxing the model. Talk to the model while shooting.

An extremely important point: If you intend to sell your photo for publication, the model must sign a Model Release form. If she is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must also sign. Get your model to sign the form before or immediately after the session.

WHERE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE MODEL

The nude form may be photographed in the studio or on location, indoors or outdoors. Many professional photographers will let their fully-equipped studio for a small fee. Studio work assures privacy and offers the maximum control over lighting and other photographic ingredients.

You may prefer to use your own home instead. It does not matter how extravagant or simple your home is, as long as it is consistent with a set theme. Your furnishings can serve as props.

I personally prefer to photograph out-doors. In this beautiful country of ours there are dozens of possible out-door locations to choose from - beaches, lakes, fields, orchards, woods, cliffs and other comparable sites. What is more natural than the natural form in natural surroundings? Choose a quiet location for it is difficult for a girl to feel relaxed with a crowd of onlookers around. Make sure you use all the existing elements around you as foregrounds (rocks, tree stumps, branches) and backgrounds (sky, sea, etc.). Clear sunny days are not necessary for out-door photography. Dull, overcast days are excellent in obtaining soft, subtle colours.

When you set out to make a naturist picture, try to inject some of the joy of nude living into your photography. Show your model enjoying the freedom of living nude in the healthy out-doors.

AROUND THE CLUBS by NOMAD

This is one of the several articles we'll be running in Naturist, giving club members a brief impression of what other clubs can offer. Purposely we're not having these written by members of the clubs concerned; it's our thought that as the articles are being written mainly for the benefit of touring visitors, we'll do our looking through visitors' eyes.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB INC.

No trip to The Bay could be considered complete without a visit to 'Rapere', some twenty minutes drive into the hills behind Napier. A pleasant journey through a rural New Zealand countryside brings you eventually to the Hawkes Bay Sun Club grounds nestling on the side of a hill, a short way along a metalled country road.

The tree fringed main lawn area, a short walk from a grassed car park, dictates the character of this very natural setting. Much of the previously open land further away is now covered in young pine trees providing peace and isolation for the energetic, and a wonderful adventure-land for young children.

After our gambol through the undergrowth the large crystal clear swimming pool situated at one end of the main lawn, was a very welcome diversion, despite the chilly day. How pleased we were to see that the club's management has had the responsibility to properly fence off this facility.

An old farmhouse converted to clubhouse some hundred yards from the pool provides all essential facilities plus bunk rooms and a large lounge. On the day of our visit, a fire was deemed necessary so the huge open fireplace was soon crackling and blazing as pine cones and timber were devoured by the flames, whilst the inevitable cups of tea were devoured by visitors and hosts alike. Included in the clubhouse complex is a small shop which appeared to us to be very poorly stocked, otherwise facilities are adequate and clean.

On first impression, one could be excused for thinking, as we did, that 'Rapere' has always drifted along on its pleasant uneventful way. However, closer inspection of the grounds brought to light the apparently abandoned ground floor structure of an ambitious clubhouse project. Completely fitted out with all mod cons as an ablution complex, this brave venture now lies forlornly deteriorating surrounded by overgrown building materials. "Perhaps one day the old spirit will return," ventured one member when quizzed on the history of this ill-fated project; in the meantime we found the spirit of friendliness beyond reproach, and many generous comments contained in the visitors' book suggest that this is the norm.

Although not connected to a town supply, water is no longer a problem to the Hawkes Bay Club as they have acquired a continuous spring supply. Fresh new water is continuously circulated through the pool, and the house supply is adequate for all purposes.

Camping and caravanning are obviously practical ventures at 'Rapere' although it would be wise to check with the Secretary if you expect to get mid-week company out of the normal holiday period.

To us, on a first visit, the Hawkes Bay people seem to have achieved the most enviable combinations with their property, it being sheltered yet open, natural enough for those that like it that way, yet sufficiently developed to provide the bulk of us with those essential creature-comforts

Our next visit we plan to make on the occasion of one of the Hawkes Bay Mini-Rallies; perhaps then we shall see this beautiful place really 'Come Alive'!

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC.

On tour ... and what more beautiful country to tour than the inland plains of Canterbury with their backdrop of snow tipped peaks, and lovely, lonely lakes surrounded by the mountains. Drivers, roads almost deserted, well surfaced, and a constant pleasure both from the scenic and travelling point of view. But hot - the Canterbury sun in midsummer can be fierce indeed, and when we finally emerge onto Highway No.1 and the prospect of a straight run towards Christchurch, all thoughts run towards the coming visit to the Canterbury Sun Club's grounds at Rolleston.

Our given directions are simple to follow and soon we are heading along the straight road which leads directly past the club gate. And past is the operative word, for in common with a number of the older, shyer clubs, Canterbury Club is coyly tucked away behind an anonymous hurricane wire gate lust like ten million other wire gates throughout New Zealand.

However, once in, the Canterbury Sun Club certainly lived up to all we had heard about it. Around two or three bends and we emerged into the main grounds set in the middle of those tall pines after which the grounds are so aptly named. Pineglades has an atmosphere and layout which must be unique to sun clubs in this country. The initial impression is more that of a holiday resort with numerous individually owned baches neatly set out in rows up one side and across the rear of the property. These, in combination with two blocks of showers, toilets, kitchen and washing facilities, along with a modern well stocked shop, give the Club an air of permanence, and must certainly qualify Canterbury for being among the very best equipped and well established clubs in the country.

The centre of the grounds are given over to the sports and picnic area, appropriately headed by the clubhouse and and attractive concrete swimming pool. At either end of this area are assembled the caravans and tents among the trees, and we have easy access to sports or pool.

Ten days were certainly not long enough for us at Canterbury, for we were shown marvellous hospitality, and had it not been for the sports courts, we would surely have come away fat and lazy after those continual invitations to a cup of tea, or a beer. Believe it or not, they are in action on the miniten courts as early as seven in the morning, and the competition is tough, as my wife and I found out.

Long hot lazy days will be our chief memory of Pineglades, lying back in the shade, watching the occasional international jet roar overhead from the nearby airport, or yarning with new friends. This living on the grounds takes a lot of beating, as you are on the spot from waking until bedtime, and with evening socials in the clubhouse or individual cabins, you soon feel as if you belong.

If I may venture one small criticism (for nothing is perfect), it would be to the effect that Canterbury Sun Club is almost two clubs in one. Although we as visitors probably noticed it more than club members would, the occasional reference to members who do not have a batch, caravan or tent site as "day visitors" leaves a taste of slightly second class citizenship. Most of the site holders are probably the backbone of the club when it comes to working bees and care taking of the grounds, but I feel that perhaps a more "inclusive" description could be found for the balance of members who may not wish or cannot afford a permanent site. This I feel could also extend to a little more effort to include them in games and club activities, for many are shy and will not push themselves forward. May I say for my wife and myself that we were greatly taken by Pineglades and its mainly kindly members, and our next visit can't come too soon. I would suggest that visitors from other clubs will find a stay well worth while, and certainly something different among New Zealand Sun Clubs.

DARWIN SUN CLUB - a short history

Naturists in Darwin lead eventful lives - pioneering free area legislation on one hand, and on the other having their club site wrecked by 1974's Cyclone Tracy.

Darwin Sun Club, the most northerly in Australia and boasting a tropical climate, was started in 1969. A tiny band of enthusiasts advertised in the local newspaper inviting interested people to attend a public meeting. Twelve attended, and a start was made.

The first task was to find a club site, and after weeks of fruitless searching around the rural area south of Darwin, an agreement was reached with a landholder to use a site - a former Second World War Army Camp. The old concrete slabs for wartime Army huts were used as a basis for club development, and gradually the bushland setting, seventeen kilometres from Darwin, took shape.

Membership fluctuated around the 80 to 90 mark as a clubhouse and games courts were built, lawns planted, and a small swimming pool was replaced by a bigger pool.

Cyclone Tracy on Christmas morning 1974 was a shattering blow.

Membership was broken up by the major evacuations from the city. Only a handful of members stayed on, and in addition to their own worries of wrecked houses in the devastated area, they faced a formidable task in rebuilding the club Site. They showed fortitude, and after clearing hundreds of fallen trees they rebuilt the club better than before.

Darwin's population returned, and from the post-cyclone low point the Sun Club has built up again with membership now over 100. However, although the nudists, the birds and the wildlife have returned, the area more than two years later still bears its Tracy scars of dozens of blasted, leafless and dead old trees.

Since 1972, Darwin Sun Club set itself the task of obtaining a public free beach along the Australian tropical coast.

The campaign continued during the post-cyclone period, and followed the club's representations, an Independent Member, Mrs. Dawn Lawrie, introduced free beach legislation in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in 1975. The legislation was extended to embrace the concept of free areas. People could apply for the declaration of an area, a beach, an inland waterhole or stretch of river, where nudity would not be an offence.

The new legislation known as the Nudity Ordinance was passed by the Assembly, and the first free area - a section of popular Casuarina Beach at Darwin's outskirts - was declared open in 1976.

This new public facility is becoming increasingly popular, and at least equals in attendances the costumed beaches. The eventful lives of the North Australian nudists continue.

The club site, the Darwin Club's home for seven years, has become involved in an acquisition area and there is no security of tenure. The club's executive is working with the Lands Branch of the Department of the Northern Territory over a lease for a new club site. This is proceeding, satisfactorily but slowly.

Darwin Sun Club has firm plans to develop its new home as a recreation area in the modern style - freedom from clothing as part of the proper enjoyment of our natural environment.

N.Z.S.A. OFFICERS REPORT

President      IAN FAIRBROTHER

I'd like to take this opportunity while there's still time to strongly recommend that all club members make a firm commitment to contribute towards the purchase of the Hot Springs Complex, the first strictly commercial enterprise to be taken on by movement members in this country. There is no doubt that if we don't press on with this, it will be carried out by others probably in no way connected with us, who are likely to build up an enterprise quite unacceptable to us, even along the lines of many of the so-called Saunas.

If we are first with a venture of this type, we'll set the standard for others who may follow. Such a venture, properly established and conducted, can only enhance the very good name created over the years by club members. I understand that the Hot Springs' Trust is to pay a deposit on the land, and a meeting is to be called in September at Taupo for you all to view the property and to have your say. I urge you all to be present, for this meeting will decide just what form commercial nudism will take in New Zealand.

Women's Representative      JENNIFER FAIRBROTHER

A recent session of the radio programme "Looking At Ourselves" tried to persuade me that as a nation we are bad sportsmen, racists, and goodness knows what else. I am not anti-society, but today's society with all its pressures makes it hard to be tolerant or patient always with the views of others. We are quick to criticize those who are prepared to "stick their necks out", those who will make a stand over the principles they believe in, yet this right to take a stand, the right to speak one's piece, is one of the basic fundamentals of a democratic society.

Too many of us depend on artificial support - from psychiatrists, doctors, alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. Along with these are the various groups, trendy, gimmicky and otherwise, offering help, and, there's nudism.

The true nudist knows that Mother Nature has everything to give; all the support, strength or help that is necessary to fulfil the needs of any of this earth's creatures.

I live in a quiet, duo-racial, rural atmosphere. Perhaps this over-simplifies things for me, perhaps it cuts me off from the world at large and gives me a wrong attitude towards today's world, but to go about one's way, respecting the laws of the land and of nature, surely means that while living in a democratic country one is free to talk, work or play with people who have different ideas, to express different opinions from one's neighbours or countrymen without fear of being called racist or a bad sport.

The cries of those who live in societies less benevolent than ours will always be loud, for they have more to cry over, but why should we not quietly prove our own course and try to achieve the ultimate peace of mind that I have found only nudism can offer.

Treasurer      JOHN JENNINGS

The end of August has come and gone and still some clubs have not paid their affiliation fees. Reminders are again in order but be sure of one point unfinancial clubs will not have a vote at Tologa Bay. All delegates are familiar with the many woes of the Federation so co-operation is requested.

On the national scene, I can see a degree of tolerance permeating the council with the showing at Wellington of some new delegates, some new ideas and an awareness of the need for a unified Federation. Let us see less of petty parochialism and more unity within our chosen movement.

Public Relations Officer      PAT TROTT

After reading the editorial in the March Naturist it confirmed my own ideas of what state the movement is in. Reading the club's newsletter and talking and listening to nudists from all over New Zealand I have formed the opinion that the movement is stagnating and we had better do something about it soon.

To answer the question "What has the movement done to tell Joe Average what he can expect of a nudist club?" I as PRO. can only do so much. The number of magazines and papers available to tell our story is getting less each year. We have been well served by the media in the past but we have to face the fact that being a nudist just isn't news anymore. The media need a specific activity, happening etc. to report on, and that has to come from the local level. I have asked clubs to appoint a PRO. to carry out this function. Some clubs have done so and enjoyed the benefits of a good relationship with the local media. Others haven't bothered. I suggest that community awareness of the existence of the clubs' activities is minimal. But even with local awareness this is not going to solve our problems. We need to get out and sell the benefits of nudism to the public on a professional basis using television and newspapers.

At Wellington I presented this idea to the delegates to take back to discuss with their clubs. The New Zealand Nudist Federation Inc. starts a TV advertising campaign on the 16th January 1978 for three weeks. This campaign would cover peak time, late night and afternoon viewing. The commercial (30 seconds) concentrates on nudist clubs, free beach membership involving family activities and the facilities available. It would draw attention to the N.Z. Naturist where a special inquiries coupon would be placed and to the two Sunday papers where we would have half-page advertisements, again showing nudist activities plus a list of all clubs and coupon for inquiries to be sent direct to the club in their district. Public acceptance of nudism, as promoted on television, can aid the efforts of the Free Beach Group, who have already indicated they would financially support such a campaign.

Such a campaign will cost a lot of money and clubs no doubt will say they cannot afford it but can they afford not to be involved? I know of no club that is satisfied with its present membership numbers. I also know of several clubs who have reached the limit by which they can raise their fees. Members feel they are paying enough for what they are getting. This means, faced with redevelopment costs, these clubs are just going to have to get more members to share the costs. It is therefore logical for all clubs to support a national campaign than the costs involved in many local campaigns.

I have had considerable help from a Canterbury Sun Club member who is in advertising and have worked out the cost of such a campaign to be about $6500. Divided by the number of adult nudist members it is $2.25 per head. How each club could finance their share is up to them - all clubs would benefit financially from the entrance fees and subscriptions they would gain. To start the campaign we have to have pledges from clubs by November to book air time and film the commercial to be ready in January. It will be too late to leave the discussions to the annual meeting at Gisborne. I will be sending out to all clubs a kit setting out the whole campaign and I hope to have positive responses from you all.

Also at the General Meeting in Wellington I asked for a co-ordinator for an Access program on T.V. 2. Bobbie Smith of S.A.N.C. got the job and has a very keen team in Auckland to help and advise her. They have plans for a fifteen minute programme - all are waiting, at the moment, to see if the Federation has been accepted for the programme. If successful, all clubs will know the viewing time in advance.

The changing of the name from Sunbathing Ass, to the New Zealand Nudist Federation Inc. received my full support. I believe it to be more honest and as P.R.O. I nearly always have had to qualify Sunbathing to Nudist when making a statement. A good news coverage is being organised for the Gisborne Rally. Many thanks to all the clubs who sent me their newsletters. See you all at the Fun Rally at Gisborne.

Rally Information

From Jane Fairbrother, Rally Secretary, comes the latest bulletin, her final installment in the pre-Rally News series:-

Don't forget - bring your chilly bins and Thermoses to help keep meat and milk cool. (We're hoping to have a system to allow daily re-freezing of slika pads.) Cushions and rugs - this sun baked East Coast earth gets mighty hard! (But we are supplying plastic toilet seats!)

Housekeepers, you'll need to bring your own necessary utensils, including buckets, bowls, outdoor cooking gear- yes, pressure cookers will help save time and fuel. And don't forget torches and lanterns. For you men, there will be power point provision for electric razors. And for the very small fry, disposable nappies will save time and washing water.

Fresh water will be delivered daily by tanker, and you'll be able to purchase daily supplies of vegetables and meat, BUT milk and bread must be ordered in advance. (There's provision for this on your application form.)

There'll be a Cabaret Evening on New Year's Eve, with Sounds incorporated, our cabaret band for the last seven years playing for the last time before the group disbands. They'll be playing all that night; truly, this'll be a night to remember. Yes, don't forget to bring some gear for your Fancy Dress for that night. Confucius say, "On arrival at rally, pick campsite well away from cabaret marquee!"

Chilled drinks will be available for the Cabaret and other nights, but cost of these is not included in your Rally Fees.

A few final points - It's not to soon to start preparing your concert item for the last night's show. We'll finish organised activities at 2p.m. daily to give you time for the beach or to practise for the coming day's events. Sorry, regretfully, no pets.

Your last official application form is printed in this copy of 'Naturist'; we've got to have it before November 30th, then we'll send you a map and receipt.

We'll see you here, in the sun!

Jane Fairbrother,
Rally Secretary.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS AT MY SUN-CLUB

(Thoughts of a teen-age girl)

I like - not having to get dressed when I go for that first walk of the day

- having the trampoline to myself for a whole five minutes

- not seeing my little brothers; they vanish for the day

- not having to decide what clothes to wear every morning

- feeling the sun toasting my skin all over

- getting back to nature on our beautiful bush tracks

- scoring for volley-ball - you're always popular with one team

- being ducked in the pool by a good-looking member of the opposite sex

- romping in a sun-shower without getting any clothes wet

- watching someone mow the volley-ball court and forgetting to lift the marker ropes

- accidentally doing an ace shot when playing miniten with a partner

- recognising someone's name or picture in the Naturist

- overhearing interesting pieces of gossip while enjoying my evening shower

- borrowing shampoo off the person in the shower next to mine

- throwing off my clothes at midnight, New Year's Eve, and leaping into a noisy pool

I don't like - being woken up early by miniten nuts with thumping bats and loud laughs

- long boring A.G.M.s

- dismal, rainy days spent in the clubhouse with hoards of rowdy, frustrated children

- attempting to sit down with a sun-burnt behind

- well-meaning people trying to drag me into energetic games

- cold, windy days when the sun goes behind a cloud every time I take my top off

- the look on my team-mates' faces when I serve the volley-ball into the net

- trying to find my brothers when it's time for tea

- wearing elastic under-wear when I've been overenthusiastic with my tanning

- having to get dressed when it's time to go home Sue. A.O.H.C.

AUSTRALIAN FREE BEACH NEWS

A.C.T. (Australian Capital Territory) CAMPAIGN FOR A FREE BEACH

Before any organised club was established in the A.C.T. an article appeared in the "Canberra Times" newspaper regarding a suggestion from a lady member of the Australian Capital Territory's Legislative Assembly that a nude swimming area should be set aside in the A.C.T. for use by the public.

Keith Wedd contacted the M.L.A. advising her of his 25-years association with the nudist movement in Australia. The M.L.A. requested that an advertising campaign should be started to attract other nudists to participate in her endeavour to establish the beach. A committee was then formed after successful advertising.

The "Canberra Nudist Group" worked very closely with the M.L.A. after being formed on about the beginning of May, 1975, collecting signatures for petitions, meeting the A.C.T. Department of Capital Territory's First Secretary and his legal advisor to discuss matters relating to the nude swimming area proposal. A lengthy submission was tabled along with our petitions containing over five-hundred signatures collected in a two week period. Further public submissions were called for soon after.

Radio and newspaper interviews were also carried out by two members of the "Canberra Nudist Group". Mary Weston, Secretary of the Australian Nudist Federation, attended a meeting and assisted us right through our campaign.

Our hard fought campaign was a success. This was mainly due to the never-ending efforts by the M.L.A. keeping the Legislative Assembly Committee, formed to investigate the Free Beach proposal, on their toes; many of the members were worried about possible vote losses for being on such a committee.

Keith Wedd, representing the "Canberra Nudist Group", invited members of the Brindabella Sun Club and the A.C.T. Nudist Club to attend the opening of the Kambah Free Beach, November 21st, 1976.

FREE BEACHES QUEENSLAND

In response to your request on page 14 of edition 83, we are sending the latest news about the free beach position here and in northern New South Wales.

After all the publicity, and threats from the Landsborough Shire Council to prosecute nudists, it would be risky indeed to use Bokarina Beach (Shangri-La) at the moment. The writer visited the area last week and there was not a swimmer in sight, far less a nude one. What will happen next summer season is anybody's guess, meanwhile roads, development and three bedroom brick veneers move steadily southward from Warana Beach, soon to sprawl over Bokarina. The developers appear to have won this round.

Some good news though: The nudes still frolic at Granite Bay in the Noosa Shire on the Sunshine Coast, about 50 km. north of Shangri-La. This has had some publicity also, but there has been some confusion between the authorities, about who has control over the beach area here. Granite Bay and Alexandra Beach lie within a National Park, and the Noosa Shire Council claim they relinquished control over the area to the State more than ten years ago. The National Parks and Wildlife Service have said they have no jurisdiction over the area of beach below high water line, and the Harbours and Marine Dept. are apparently not interested in nude bathing. There was a top level investigation into the matter recently which resulted in some comical buck passing, and as far as we know, no nude swimmer on the beach itself has ever been approached or harassed by any authority.

For visitors, proceed north along Highway 1 from Brisbane, turn right at Cooroy, proceed to Noosa heads and park in the Noosa National Park Car Park. Take the walking track 2 km. to Granite Bay, which is the fourth bay and is signposted. If one is really energetic, proceed per the walking track to Alexandra Beach further around the headland. This is open and dangerous and not as satisfactory for swimming for this reason. We have tourist maps on the area with these two spots marked "natural swimming", so the fact is well known and even promoted.

There are isolated spots on the ocean side of Bridie Island, also used by nudists. This is much closer to Brisbane, and Bridie is bridge linked to the mainland at Toorbul Point. The island is administered by the Caboolture Shire Council which has a reputation of intolerance to nudists. There is a section on the northern end which is in the Landsborough Shire but nudists need a boat to get there to the swimming spots, alternatively a four wheel drive vehicle from the southern end.

We have reports of nude swimming continuing at the Southport Spit, despite frequent arrests. The area is said to be frequented by perverts and is not recommended, however for Gold Coast holiday visitors it might be worth a try.

Over the years we have frequently heard about nude swimming at Fingal Head in very northern N.S.W. The latest report is that Police are very active in the area even though it is relatively isolated. Queensland nudists have been considering approaching the N.S.W. government to consider a legal free beach in the area where Queensland citizens can have access, as there appears little hope of a legal beach being declared in this (conservative) State. We understand that the idea is strong with some business people in the area. If we confirm this we will try to link forces, and let you know the outcome.

LAKE BONNEY NUDIST RESORT

"REPORT FROM ANF ASSISTANT SECRETARY AFTER RECENT VISIT TO THIS BEACH, A LEGAL FREE AREA IN S.A."

Possibly the least known legal nudist area in Australia is at Pelican Point, on the shores of Lake Bonney.

This 11km by 5km lake connected to the Murray River by Chambers Creek is in the middle of a popular South Australian tourist area known as Riverland. This area includes the towns of Barmera, Bern, Kingston, Remark, Loxton and Waikerie.

The beach, still in its natural state, is 8km from Barmera, a pleasant town catering for all types of holiday makers, with a variety of entertainment and accommodation, such as hotels, motels, and a modern caravan park. This park is located beside the lake, with its own beach and boat ramp.

The "unclad area" at Pelican Point is easily reached from Barmera by road or boat, and if you do not mind "roughing it" you can camp near the beach itself. The only facilities are a couple of drums for rubbish placed there by the regular users, who not only keep the area clean, but have cleared the beach of underwater snags and other debris.

Lack of publicity has meant that the beach is quiet and uncrowded, if you do not take into account the abundant bird-life, hence the name!

Lake Bonney is next to the Sturt Highway which runs from Adelaide to Mildura in Victoria. Its low rainfall and abundance of sunshine make it ideal for skinny dipping and getting your total tan. Even in May, two weeks before winter officially begins, it was possible to sunbathe and have a quick dip.

Barmera seems to have something for everyone. Yachting, water skiing, fishing boats for hire, tennis, golf, trotting, greyhounds, two T.V. channels, wineries, sightseeing, and for the nudists, best of all, a legal free beach, or as they say in South Australia, an unclad area.

To be recommended to all sun-loving enthusiasts!

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

Thank-you very much for the reminder that my subscription has expired with the issue of your current issue No. 82, and I wish to inform you that I will not be renewing my subscription with you, but wish to let you know that I will still be purchasing your excellent publication, but in future I will get it through my Club "Sunseekers". I spoke to our club Secretary and she informed me that this would be possible.

I would like to congratulate all you people connected with the New Zealand Naturist, for the wonderful job you are doing and the marvellous magazine you produce, and have produced in the past, and I hope you can continue to produce in the future. I suppose you have the few who criticize your efforts but I am sure that for every one who knocks your efforts there are hundreds (and I am one) who praise the work you produce.

Whenever you become discouraged, and am sure you all do at some time, please think of me and my family, who get so much pleasure from the wonderful work you are doing and all of the other people who must feel as we do and then I am sure you will be able to sit back and say, "Our work is justified and our efforts are rewarded".

I have been a member of Sunseekers in West. Aust. for about seven years and in that period of time I have seen some different nudist or naturist publications but your magazine is the best of them all. Please keep up the great work. My wife, myself and two children wish you and everyone connected with you the best of success, the best of luck and the best of health and would like you to think that even though we are not dealing directly with you in the future we will still be getting the New Zealand Naturist just the same, but, through our club instead.

Thank-you very much for the pleasure you have given me in the past, and I am sure you will give me in the future.

Roy Murgatroyd

P.S. Don't forget. Don't worry about the KNOCKERS. Think of the satisfied Customers who like your magazine and compare the percentage and am sure the happy people will let you see that it is all worth it.

Thank-you

Dear Sir,

Just a line to express my appreciation of the attitudes of mind depicted in the photos in the June issue. Most were good - some very good indeed, but not all.

I detest the knock kneed, cross legged, hour glass, chain-belt type of mock modests and consider that some of your photos were delightful - take for instance the picture on page seven of the two children arm-in-arm, what a truly delightful picture to any soul! And some others of adults too - comparisons are obvious and I shall refrain from them but the principles of simplicity, cleanliness, complete unaffectedness are vital. Keep it up. God Bless.

Dear Sir,

It was with some elation I read the news of the motion carried at the recent General Meeting of the N.Z.S.A. to change the name of that organisation to the New Zealand Nudist Federation. This move brings us into line with our true beliefs and tells it like it is

The next move is to produce, as soon as possible, some new car windscreen stickers, or bumper stickers, or both, advocating nudism in the name of our national society. It is a pleasant thought that all clubs have their own car stickers promoting nudism and their own club but I know from experience that many clubs would not do this and very many nudists would not display such a sticker if available.

I must congratulate, through your columns, the South Auckland Nudist Club for their splendid stand, when speaking to their motion. They are the first nudist club in N.Z. and have gone out of their way to prove it in no uncertain manner. Let us hope that many more clubs will now follow their example and change their names so that people seeing the club name will know what it means.

Yours most sincerely,
John H. Gilmour,
Nudist.

Dear Sir,

I take issue with one of your correspondents in No. 83 of your salacious little journal.

In his letter Keith Bolton makes frequent reference to being naked.

Now I always thought that you people in your 'Sun' clubs ran around indulging in your various sports activities without any clothes on because you enjoyed it and because you thought it was healthy.

If this is the case, the word to use should surely be "nude". Naked is to be without the protection of clothing, to be striped of clothing. Only a masochist would enjoy being naked, whereas to be nude is a far different thing. Nude suggests the very splendour of having nothing on, the beauty, sensuality (asexual let me hasten to add), comfort, and sheer luxury of being able to mix freely with other people without any clothes.

Such is certainly not naked. But it is most certainly nude.

Yours faithfully,
John Upnorth.

SIN? WHO SAYS IT'S A SIN?

There has been time to reflect on the Auckland Regional Authority's decision not to allow free beaches in areas under its jurisdiction, and time to review in one's mind the whole matter of objections to nudity on beaches and, incredible as it may seem, objections to nudists living the life they want to live on club grounds or in the most secluded of places. In my reflecting, I have gone again to my Bible to see what it has to say on the subject, for it seems to me that basically the Bible is the bastion, albeit misguidedly, of those who oppose us.

(The Police Offences Act is not opposed to nudity as such. There must be something further in a person's behaviour which calls for the intervention of criminal law; behaviour must be likely to cause resentment or revulsion.)

And so, on what do protesters base their objections to social nudity? We are not criminals, and no one, not even our most vociferous opponents, has ever dared suggest this of us, so we are left with the only possible alternative, that the naked body is something which causes these people resentment or revulsion. Question further, and almost invariably you get an answer along the lines of, "Oh, but the Bible says nakedness is an evil thing!" (I even had one lady say to me recently that she was opposed to social nudity because she considered that parts of the human body were sacred. She got quite huffy with me when I disagreed and told her that to me all parts of the human body were sacred.)

It's about here that I get increasingly disturbed, even angry, with those persons who set themselves up as God, or who set themselves against the word of God in order to convince themselves and others that nudity is sinful. Strong words, to say that such people set themselves against the word of God? Read Genesis, Chapter 1, where God on the sixth day looked on all he had created - and this included naked man - "and behold, it was good". Mark that well; naked man was good.

And still in Genesis, in Chapter 3, we read of the Lord God saying to man (now clothed in fig leaves), "Who told thee that thou was naked?" God hadn't objected to the nakedness - this was a man — thought - but he did query, "Who was it told you that you should wear clothes?" Even the much quoted matter of the making of coats of skin to clothe man and women was at man's behest. God's plan was that man go naked; it was man, after he had eaten the fruit, who decided that nakedness was cause for shame. Do you wonder at my concern when I find people taking it on themselves to say that in the eyes of God nakedness is a sinful thing?

Yes, I know that Leviticus, Chapter 18, is so often quoted as showing God's opposition to nakedness, but read further, in the New English Bible translation, where the message of this chapter is summed up in verse six, with the words,"No man shall approach a blood relation for intercourse," and this, of course, is what anyone but the most bigoted or benighted must know is the intention of this whole chapter. And if I still hear voices saying that the Bible must be taken literally, that the King James version must be taken as gospel, then I wonder what are the protesters doing about Deuteronomy, Chapter 22 verse 11, in which we are told, "Thou shalt not wear a garment of diverse sorts, as of woolen and linen together?" I trust that those who are so keen to keep to the full letter of God's word are not wearing mixed weaves of cotton and wool when they wave their banners against the sin of nakedness. Go back a little further in this same chapter, where we are exhorted not to sow "diverse seeds" in the same pasture - now come on, you protesters, I haven't yet heard you calling for the weight of the law to fall on Federated Farmers for encouraging members to sow mixed fields of cocksfoot and rye. Take some literally, take all literally; you can't have it both ways.

Do I hear protests becoming a little muted, becoming a muttered mumble that my arguments are puerile or senile? No way can you say this, for in the matter of "garments of diverse sorts" and "diverse seeds" the Bible is quite explicit, but nowhere in my Bible can I find an injunction prohibiting communal nakedness of "diverse sexes", yet those who oppose us tell us that we do a sinful thing when we go about unclothed, that it is a sinful thing for us to follow the original plan of God. And mind you, we don't want to go nude in Queen Street or Willis Street or around the Octagon or Square, but only in places where we're on our own, only where we'll cause no resentment or revulsion, where, with no criminal intent, we can just go back to being as on the sixth day, when He looked on the garden and all His creatures before man clothed himself, and behold, it was good.

Let's leave all that for a moment and go off on another tack, a more practical, saner, contemporary look at what is involved in social nudity. What do we nudists want? The last thing we want is to cause a stir or to force our unclothed presence on others. We are not criminals, we are not indecent in conduct, in thought, or in any way according to the definition of the word. We are ordinary people, a true cross-section of any community, and all we want to do is to be able to take our recreation in the most natural way in the world - without clothing. (It's worth pausing to look for a moment at that word "recreation?" have you ever considered the true meaning of "re-creation?") That's all we want, to be able to re-build ourselves, to re-create, to compose ourselves away from the pressures and tensions of the outside world, even if only for a few hours during the weekend. To cast aside clothes, cares, social inequalities, to leave behind the telephone, the television, traffic and all the other harassments of modern living, just to be ourselves, completely, freely, without any artifice whatsoever. And such desires are sinful? Such activities are criminal?

I have a strong feeling that non-nudists who read these words may have paused at the end of my last paragraph and indulged in a little wistful thinking, asking themselves perhaps, "Is that what it means to be a nudist? Strains and Stresses of today's living cast off with clothes, no compulsions of any kind? Nothing to do except relax at games or lie blissfully naked in the sun? Is that what it's all about?" Yes, that's what it's all about.

Does it sound to good to be true? Well, it is good, and it is true.

If you've got the slightest curiosity about nudism, wondering whether it could give you some relief from the drabness, from the pressures that so many people have come to accept as an inevitable part of today's living, wonder no more. Come and see for yourself; we think it's the answer to many of today's problems. But it's a funny thing; we've asked those who most shrilly say we're wrong to come and see for themselves but they persistently refuse, and fall back on their cries of "Lust!" and "Sin" without having the faintest idea of what is really involved.

Perhaps I should conclude with a word of warning - if you do decide to visit a club, don't come looking for lust and sin; you'd be very disappointed.

Ron. A.O.H.C.

NEW ZEALAND

CLUB NEWS

NORTHERN SUNSEEKERS INC.

Our social season parties have been a great success (can anybody chin the bar more than ten times, or worse still sit on a bottle and light a candle. 'Ouch'). Roll on summer.

At the club grounds we've had a few visits from vandals, most probably the children who use our swimming pool in summer when we're not around.

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB INC.

Some of our members have been tripping about visiting other clubs and making new friends recently. A group of us enjoyed a good soak at the Matamata Hot Springs with many fellow-nudists from other clubs, ably hosted by the Waikato Club.

Another group invaded the Gisborne Sun Club Cabaret to keep up the Gisnaki tradition. We were informed that the Cabaret was just a mild warm-up for the New Year's Dance at the Rally.

We have just run a most enjoyable Fred Dagg Cabaret (Barn Dance) complete with barn and hay. (We left the sheep outside.)

Tickets are going fast for our 5th Annual Cabaret on September 17. If you want to enjoy our warm hospitality, contact our Secretary and she will arrange billets or accommodation.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

What do nudists do in the wintertime? If they are energetic and are well organised they form club working bees and set about the jobs that need doing in readiness for the sunny days ahead. With a major building task in the shape of an ambitious new clubhouse, members of the ASC have toiled ahead with the construction in recent months, transporting thousands of feet of sawn timber from a mill in Penrose right across Auckland to the club grounds in the foothills of the Waitakeres.

Projects like a new clubhouse need money, and the sale of ti-tree for firewood, cleared and cut on the club grounds, has proved a surprisingly good source of revenue.

But winter is not all work, and members have gathered for weekend outings. One family affair, "Gumball Rally" that converged on Parakai combined a barbeque with a hot swim. There have also been film evenings and a Country & Western party.

For members who have faithfully kept up with the club's social pace, the coming summer's programme of swimming and sunbathing will be a hard-won and welcome reward.

FREE BEACH GROUP

At this time of year only the bravest members are using beaches, of course. However, many of us are supporting the regular sauna nights, swim sessions and hot spring visits of the other clubs. There has been considerable back-room activity by the Committee: the FBG is now an Incorporated Society (with the help of a Common Seal found on a beach somewhere by Fred Bear or that's his story!). Meetings have been held in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton at which local members have expressed their views (generally very favourable) on the proposed link with the NZNF. The last two meetings were also opportunities for local members to get acquainted and organise themselves into self-supporting groups, and we hope that it will be possible for our committee members to visit other corners of the country.

We see the Free Beach Group as an organisation serving to link all those who may not be able, for a variety of reasons, to join a nudist club but who wish to express their support for the principle of nudity at all appropriate times. Club members, of course, are also most welcome, and we hope that many FBG folk will eventually join or form clubs. In fact, some Hamilton members said that the "Beach" part of the name was not entirely appropriate from their point of view. However, our publicity will make it clear, we hope, that we also encourage freedom at suitable lakes and river bathing places.

Fred Bear has been so popular as a sticker for cars that we are now arranging for him to appear as a transfer for ironing on to tee shirts etc. Price will be announced later.

We did hold a meeting on the 11th June at which members' slides and movies were shown. Everyone who went enjoyed being reminded of the sunny days which seem so remote at the moment. By the time you read this we will have had our Annual General Meeting, at which we hope to announce plans for improved organisation as the Group expands.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

There's been much activity on the working front at Oranui, even during the shockingly wet weather we've had over the last month and more, with extensions to miniten courts, the installation of a new glass trophy case, further work on the new sun deck, more cork tiles for the club house floor, and preliminary planning for the overhead floodlighting of the pool area; all these have been completed or are well under way. Those members who haven't been up to the grounds recently will have cause to be grateful to the small band of workers who have carried on with out-of-season maintenance and improvements even right through the wet.

However, even during the bad weather we've had opportunity to get together at the Parakai hot pools (thanks here to our North Shore friends!) or at one of the suburban tepid pools. The saunas have continued, but now we're looking forward to the Auckland combined Sun Clubs Ball, to be held later in the year at Sheraton Lounge. It's no too late to decide that you'll be there too!

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INC.

September at The Orchard means the start of another club year, a new Spring, and the prospect of those long warm summer days returning.

Our A.G.M. is this month, and I feel this is the right time for it, when hearts are keen and all of summer lies waiting.

Past months have seen the dances, dinners, saunas and winter tasks, like pruning our fruit trees and other maintenance work, now behind us. Saunas, of course, will continue through the summer, as these have proved an all year round attraction for many.

Our big task now is to persuade non club members that they are missing out on the time of their lives, so they do not say in years to come, "I wish we had joined years ago." To this end, we will endeavour to make our advertising widespread, informative and persuasive, as we feel our club should be as well known in the community as any other. You can be married, single, solo, young or old. If you are genuine you can be assured of a friendly welcome at The Orchard. No doubt our advertisement elsewhere in this magazine will catch your eye - don't just think about it - give us a ring and we will answer any questions you may have. No obligation!

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB INC.

Sports courts being rolled twice a week, even when covered in water, tuck shop planned, drainage done, trampoline delivered, enthusiasm abundant and grounds like paradise - we're planning for a busy summer. South Auckland, at last, is getting sport enthusiasts moving - not that you have much choice when the organiser is an ace at Karate! We're looking forward to some competition from visiting clubs in early summer. Everything is going great - hurry up summer!

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

Hello to spring and the summer to follow. We've managed to survive the dreary winter and to all those hard working members, who have done so much to get our grounds in order, a big thank you from all of us.

Our quest for members continues, so if you have a touch of the pioneering spirit, our club is right for you. When the cold winds blow in off the sea there is always our sauna to retreat too. Our shortest day dip brought forth several hardy swimmers and crazy as it seems, it's another fun winter activity, particularly when one can thaw out in comfort. To all nudists and supporters everywhere, we hope you have a fabulous spring and summer.

JUBILEE SWIM

On the day of the Queen's arrival in Auckland, she stood for an hour in the rain and got only the merest glimpse of the Royal personages as the closed car skimmed around the corner. So she resolved to go down to the nearby beach that night and watch the "Britannia", ablaze with regal light, depart the city.

(A Royalist to the bone, she is!)

After bathing, putting her hair in the inevitable rollers, she wandered down the little pedestrian reserve at the appointed sailing time. She waited, and waited... two cigarettes later she was still waiting. The night was warm and pleasant after the day's rain; the limpid water kissed the sand gently... Heavens! it all became too much for her so she left her clothes on the beach in an inconspicuous heap and slipped into the midnight water (taking care to keep the curlers high and dry).

After a delightful twenty minutes she walked out of the water only to find that the drift of the tide had carried her down the beach and she did not rendezvous with her clothes. Walking, trotting up and down the beach - horrors - where were the cast-aside garments? Panic began to engulf her as she peered hither and thither and yon.

What's this? Without warning there came the sound of shouting and laughter, and hurtling down the pedestrian reserve rocketed three cars - with lights on full beam; happy hordes poured out of the vehicles, to be met by the astonishing sight of one of the locals absolutely starkers!

However, it's an ill wind... There, in the light of cars' headlights and right at her feet were the adventurous one's clothes. She unobtrusively and with nonchalant dignity slipped them on and joined the merrymakers to watch her Sovereign depart, her royalist fervour not one whit diminished by the incident; but she suspected, all the same, that some of the shouting nearby was not all for the Queen.

Midnight Siren.

AUSTRALIAN
CLUB NEWS

EUREKA SUN CLUB

The beautiful Queensland winter weather has brought the southern visitors to our club again this 'year, and they are always assured of a warm welcome. Two of our full members in fact are Sydney-siders, Cyril & Ada, and they will be with us until October. Ada is a committee member, and very active in club affairs.

The publicity we received over the free beach issue brought a flood of mail and some membership enquiries. All the letters but two were "pro nudist" regarding the use of selected beaches. The Queensland Council for Civil Liberties also supported us publicly, or rather the concept of free beaches. Our club has launched the first co-ordinated, official effort to gain a free beach in Queensland.

We have a sealed road all the way to the grounds now, except for the last few hundred yards. There is a culvert over the creek, so members can attend even after heavy rain. The club is the only "member owned" club in Queensland, with a membership of 70 adults plus their children. We have, we believe, the most beautiful unspoiled 10 acres in the Beaudesert Shire.

We expect a good "roll up" for our A.G.M. in October.

BRINDABELLA SUN CLUB

Our swim nights are conducted regularly each Sunday fortnight. Sports nights have now commenced in a large centrally heated gymnasium where privacy permits members to go nude if they wish. Other winter activities are conducted at regular intervals, which includes occasional visits to remote coastal beaches where members manage to get in one or two hours sunbathing. It is good to get out of the winter woollies.

We have commenced an advertising campaign in small country newspapers around the southern area of New South Wales with amazing results.

We thought we would do our little bit towards public relations for the nudist movement assisting those in out-of-the-way places keep in contact with what is going on in the nudist movement and advise others, who unknowingly live within a reasonable distance of a club, the box number of that club. We also recommend buying New Zealand Naturist or subscribing to same.

THE THREE BEARS SUN & HEALTH CLUB

Things have really been happening on all fronts here since our last news. On the social scene a highly successful dinner dance was organised by Peter and Sandra (Sunshine Families) for the Brisbane clubs' "Interclub Dance". Around 200 turned up for the night, another is being planned for October.

October will see a busy social month for us with Children's Day on the 9th, our miniten interclub day on the 16th and most likely an interclub dance later in the month.

Another miniten court is in the making, a track has been made to the back of the property on East side and also a track for cars has been made on the West side which will give a wider range of camping areas and parking.

The permit of approval has been reviewed for the second pool, the toilet block has seen many hours and much money spent. By the time this issue arrives the pool should be operating again after a spell of 3 months.

ACT. NUDIST CLUB INC.

Winter has really been with us the past few months but our activities continue to drag members away from the fireside. The highlight for us has been the celebration of our First Birthday, when we hired a local Harbour Ferry and had a Dinner-Dance whilst steaming around Lake Burley Griffin. It was a fabulous night, with almost all of our members joining us to celebrate an extremely progressive year. Those who couldn't make it joined us the following night for a record Swim and Sauna night and then on Sunday for the Children's Fancy Dress Party. It was a great weekend and a fitting climax to a most successful twelve months.

Activities during winter centre around the weekly Sauna and Swim nights and Gymnasium nights at a local High School. Parties are in full swing and there is always something on for all members to enjoy. Our membership is continuing to grow rapidly and we have over 160 adults and scores of children from new born babies to teenagers. We don't know what we would do if we got everyone together at a function!

The hunt for our own club site is continuing and we are hopeful of our efforts bearing fruit soon. An interesting aspect of this is the fact that a club can survive and develop the tremendous rapport amongst members found in most nudist clubs, without a site. Probably the fact of not having a site has made our club even more united; we know it has made us get into the community and come out in the open about our activities which has benefited everybody. And it is surprising to find how many facilities are available for use when you start looking!

We are sure the atmosphere of our club will continue to grow even with our own site and we look forward to the day we can put our energies into developing a place of our own. But don't leave it until then to visit us. You will find plenty of activity with us already, so if you are coming to Canberra, drop us a line at P.O. Box 242, Woden, 2606 and we can guarantee you a most enjoyable time... and isn't that what it is all about?

NUDITY IS SANITY

The subject of Human Development, and the importance that home environment has in relation to mental health and happiness, is concerning New Zealand's social workers and educationalists. A leading figure in the campaign for Free Beaches and the nudist movement, EMIEL ROLAND attended a recent conference held by the Family Life Education Council, at which recommendations were presented to the Minister of Social Welfare.

The recommendations urged the introduction of a programme that would cover the entire schooling of children and involve parents and teachers. Speakers included a high school principal, a mental hospital superintendent and representatives of marriage guidance councils. They stressed the need for education in the subject of human development and relationships, and the need for healthy attitudes to be instilled from infancy if problems associated with adolescence and marriage were to be avoided.

Listening to the speakers, I could not help thinking how children brought up in the nudist movement have a big advantage. They are able to regard the human body as a normal object, and can see how it develops as it grows from childhood through adolescence to maturity. They can observe an expectant mother naked and, when her child is born, see it feeding in the natural way at the breast.

As an introduction to Human Development, surely this is of great benefit to the children of nudist parents. I see the nudist movement as offering more than sports or relaxation to the people who take part in it. With the right individuals we could play a vital role in the community, contributing much to the solution of those problems which stem from unenlightened attitudes to the human body.

Because of this it is our duty, I feel, to introduce Free Beaches to the New Zealand scene. Unlike a club, membership of which may be denied to many, Free Beaches would be available to all.

It is in this way that those who work for the introduction of Free Beaches are contributing toward a better understanding of Human Development.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

Going travelling this year? The free beach movement continues to grow worldwide, according to the Bulletin of the International Naturist Federation, with Yugoslavia leading the back-to-nature trend in the Mediterranean - Adriatic area. Public nudism is an accepted fact on much of that country's impressive coast and offshore islands, and the official tourist industry happily broadcasts the good news. Austria has been granted its first "official" nudist beach on the Rhine, but in South Africa it is still against the law to go bare. Even so, the law continues to be broken by more than 3000 bathers at Sandy Bay, Cape Province, on fine weekends. The beach is "uncontrolled", says the Bulletin, and thus is open for "snoopers and cameramen to mix with the genuine naturists". The Bulletin records that the beach is so popular, legal or not, that tourist officials rank it as one of the Cape's major attractions - we hope for the right reasons.

Darwin Sun Club publish a very interesting and informative newsletter. A comment on the sports page caught our eye. It concerned volleyball. "Conditions, of course, did count a lot and several players were quite flushed after the effort of three games. Training is vital to produce that extra stamina". That last comment is so true, isn't it?

'No nudists' remit lost. A remit asking that sunseekers be banned from using Uretiti Beach for their gatherings was lost narrowly at the annual council meeting of the Whangarei District Federation of Country Women's Institutes.

The remit, put to the meeting by the Waipu Institute, stated that the group should be banned on health and moral grounds.

Speaking to the remit, a member of the Waipu branch said that the Institute was not against sun seeker organisations. It was just felt that Uretiti was a popular beach, right along the state highway, which was safe for families to use.

A more secluded bay with less public access would have been preferable, the speaker said.
