CRISIS TIME FOR NUDISM IN N.Z.

The 20th Annual General Meeting of the New Zealand Sunbathing Association Executive produced it's usual plethora of reports and verbal fireworks. However, one fact emerged which should give cause for concern; the nudist movement in N.Z. in terms of total registered members has hardly changed in the last three years. Using these figures indicates that as many 'drop out' as join the movement each year.

I doubt, in many cases, whether registered numbers of club members are the true total of all club members. When a club is required to pay 70c, as affiliation fees to the N.Z.S.A., for each adult member, any means of trimming the amount owing becomes extremely tempting.

Let's assume these figures are true. Why?

What has the movement as a whole done to tell Joe Average what he can expect of and in a nudist (naturist, sunbathing, outdoor, health, ad nauseam) club? Nothing!

Telephone conversation:

Prospective Member: "I'd like to know a little about your Club. How often do you get together?"

Secretary: "All financial members have their own keys and can go to the grounds whenever they wish."

Prospective Member: "Oh! you have your own grounds." (Don't laugh - it often happens). "I was under the impression all your activities were organised beforehand."

Comment: A large number of the public don't know that all clubs have their own grounds let alone that these would be available to them 365 days a year.

Secretary: "The grounds are there for you to do what you want whether it be sport, work or just lazing in the sun. To bring our members together the committee organises events such as sports weekends, trips to saunas, beaches etc., wine and cheeses, fancy dress parties, guy fawkes evening parties etc. Of course there is always the nudist event of the year which is the National Rally held over New Year when nudists from all over New Zealand get together for sports and socials held at a different club each year."

Prospective Member: "Speechless."

Secretary: "Are you still there?"

Prospective Member: "I had no idea. I've read your magazine and met a few nudists but there is just so much more to it than I realised."

If this is the kind of conversation one has with someone with the guts to ring can we suppose that a large percentage of those that don't, know even less. Let this encourage the nudist movement to tell the public what we stand for and what they can expect for their membership fees. People is what this movement is all about and with communication and co-operation between clubs, this magazine and the public we can foster a new understanding of nudism which in turn would stimulate the growth of our wonderful movement.

To follow: Uncommitted club members, support your club in all its activities and club committees support and strengthen the National Association by nominating persons for the executive. The old adage holds true, you only get out what you are prepared to contribute.

A fine spirit of co-operation has been built up between the five Auckland clubs and nudism is flourishing there. In the South Island it would appear that apathy has led to atrophy. What about it you 'mainlanders', are you going to let the North leave you behind?

Let us all then join together to promote nudism through our Clubs and at national level, so that, at our 21st Annual Meeting, it can be reported that nudism is once more on the move and flourishing in New Zealand.

The 25th Jubilee Rally - "The Gumboot Rally"

The 1976-77 rally held at Wellington Sun Club from 19 December to 2 January coincided with the silver anniversary of Wellington Sun Club. The 20th Annual N.Z.S.A. Meeting was held in the school next door to allow the building team a little more time on the club house. Campers arrived to the sound of hammers pounding nails in a last minute effort to close the 90 by 40 building in. The work paid off as the rain fell and fell and kept on falling. The grounds slowly disappeared under the water, drowning months of work by the grounds committee. Inside, the last available flooring was laid and temporary timber filled in the last 8 ft to give a floor area of 75 by 40 ft.

The first night saw the full use of the floor as campers danced to the "River City Disco" in keeping with the moist atmosphere which was to follow the programme for the next five days.

The next morning, between showers, volley ball commenced, and later the rally was opened by Robin Dean of TV1's Close To Home. The 25th Anniversary cake was cut by Doug Cousins, a foundation club member.

A popular innovation this year was the introduction of "Top Tan," a series of competitive and hilarious games between teams from the clubs. These proved to be a highlight and brightened some of the more depressing days. The first night saw 260 come to the wine and cheese evening and the following night the clubhouse became a cinema when films and slides were shown. The New Years dance had 315 dancers crowded on the floor and finally convinced the doubters of the value of the clubhouse and the foresight of those who have laboured on it. The revellers saw in the New Year to the pipes and the following day we counted 55 fewer drinking glasses.

One afternoon N.Y.C. held an informal meeting to arouse the interest of prospective members and parents. They feel the need to overcome the apathy of both to ensure the growth of the youth club. It was good to see the young people taking part in all aspects of the rally. They also prepared the barbecue and cleaned up afterwards.

The Wellingtonians were once again happy to be entertained at the concert, feeling no doubt, that it would be unfair to take too much of the limelight. Fortunately the visitors were not reluctant to perform and the concert was a great success. A silver coin collection was taken for the Perc. Cousins Trust Fund, but the lighting prevented many from seeing the colour of the coins.

For the statistically minded there were 360 campers using 54 caravans and 109 tents. The car park had 120 cars plus those of the 153 day visitors.

Most of the finals were held on the last day because of delays due to the previously mentioned wet. We were entertained by the "Valley Stompers" swing band on the main lawn while the finals of "Top Tan" were in progress. Waikato were the winners with 50 points, while Gisborne came a close second with 49 and Palmerston North third with 45. The senior winner of the informal draughts competition was Clive (B.O.P.) and the junior section was won by Glenn of Canterbury.

Despite the weather, the programme ran smoothly and the campers were generally philosophical about the conditions. It must be said, though, that it did not rain all the time, but any brown bodies were more than likely due to rust.

Undoubtedly this rally will be recalled as the wettest ever and we look to Gisborne to show that gumboots really should not be a necessary part of a nudists' gear.

NORTH TO OREWA ... AN OPEN DAY

It's not every day that a nudists' club opens it's doors to all and sundry, so for that once a year event you expect the weather to do you proud, sunshine, blue skies and light winds being the order of the day. After all, who would visit a sun club in wind and rain (I know, lots of people, Wellington proved that!). We were just lucky, I guess.

Having advertised ourselves as "Auckland's most progressive club" we really had to pull out all the stops; people who had visited us twelve months before must have noticed a tremendous change in the place. Not only the 20 ft pool and adjacent toddlers' pool, but a good volleyball court, tenniquoits, swing ball and children's play equipment for the energetic ones and quiet bush walks and grassy slopes for more restful moments. A shop, tucked into the back room of the newly painted clubhouse, which managed to keep pace with the demands for soft drinks, sweets and suntan lotions.

People started turning up at nine-thirty and for the next three hours the two car park attendants had their work cut out directing dozens of cars. That in itself is progress, last year you had to leave cars on the road and pick your way down a muddy slope, now the driveway is graded and covered with limestone.

By midday the place was really alive. Somewhere near three hundred people, all shapes, sizes and colours, a few with obvious trepidation as first-timers, but most renewing old friendships and making new ones, there's something about a picnic atmosphere that makes everyone feel good.

All the local clubs were well represented, and some folk from Northern Sunseekers too, the visitors book is beginning to read like "Who's who" in the nudist fraternity. People don't travel those distances these days simply out of curiosity, there's an excellent feeling around of wanting to make things go well for other clubs that gets you all together on a day out like this. Just as well a visitor won the sumptuous chocolate cake which was raffled, there are enough spreading waistlines in the host club. Rumour has it that there is a sweepstake being run on the production race between the two very pregnant ladies due within a week of each other. Now there's a novel approach to the old fund-raising problem!

There seemed to be endless cups of tea and coffee as the afternoon sped on, then it was time for President Colin to cut the ribbon and officially open the pool. I wonder if he realised that his band of merry men had every intention of making him the first one in the water! Arms and legs everywhere, but at least the pool was christened and within minutes was full of bodies. Last summer, with no water, remains just a hazy memory.

At five o'clock when the hangi was lifted a lot of people had left, but there were still about two hundred to sample the meal that Dick and Bruce had cooked in the good earth. There was plenty to go around and the orderly queue were all served while it was still hot. Someone said there was a punch served, those gallons disappeared quickly; it seemed that wine served in leather covered glasses hung around the neck was an appropriate answer to an obvious problem at outdoor meals. Do you have a patent on them Alan?

So the evening quietened down, the chilly bins and the sun umbrellas all went home and as we watched the smoke curling away from the rubbish fire I found I was thinking of these lines by Ogden Nash, which don't apply to nudists anyway!

I think that I shall never see

A billboard lovely as a tree

Indeed, unless the billboards fall,

I'll never see a tree at all.

Aren't we lucky!

20th NATIONAL RALLY

SPORTS
REPORT

If you were at the rally you could be forgiven for remembering it as "the rally when it rained all the time" It certainly seemed that way, but fortunately it did stop at times and it was in those dry overhead periods that, somehow, the full sports programme was completed.

First Day: After a full day of rain on the day preceding the Rally prospects were uncertain for a start of the volleyball which had an entry of sixteen teams. However, although only one court was playable good progress was made in the preliminary games in which the teams were split into two sections for a round-robin of seven matches each.

Miniten, tenniquoits and table tennis commenced as the wind increased which made conditions difficult at times for the miniten players. For the first time table tennis players had a firm board surface under their feet as the Wellington Sun Club's new hall came into use. Of gymnasium size, it was big enough to enable two table tennis tables and four indoor bowls mats to be in use at the same time with adequate room for spectators.

Second Day: Changeable weather continued but both volleyball courts were now in use. In the late morning showers became of longer duration and more frequent which gave the Sports Organiser a problem to decide whether the swimming sports should be postponed. At 1 p.m. in heavy overcast, rainy conditions the decision was made - postpone for 24 hours. At 2 p.m. the sun was shining from clear skies and the main lawn was covered with relaxing, sunbathing bodies! Miniten, tenniquoits and table tennis were able to continue.

Third Day: There were more showers overnight, but a better day dawned. After the preliminary games the volleyball teams split into groups of four to play off for positions. Wellington Ray's team were the favourites in the top four, followed by AOHC Con's team, ASC Roger's team and the promising young NYC team captained by Peter.

The swimmers were rewarded with a fine afternoon and some close and keen contests were seen. Ron (AOHC) prevailed in the Men's events as he has done on many occasions, winning the freestyle and backstroke events and just going down in the breast-stroke race to a determined Emil, much to the delight of NYC supporters. The Ladies events were evenly contested by a small entry and Glenne (Bay of Plenty) gave her club a popular victory after winning the freestyle and being runner-up in the other two races.

There was some good swimming in the age-group races though disappointing entries for the 14 to 15 years group. The judges, Ron (AOHC) and Doris (Wellington), had great difficulty in deciding the winners of the David Wells trophies for style as the standard, particularly of the girls, was so high. However, it is interesting to note that, without conferring, their final points awarded agreed on both swimmers, Michael and Louise. Younger sister, Claire, completed a double for Louise's family by sharing the girls 8 to 10 years event.

All other sports were now ready for the big day of finals but...

Fourth Day: Rain - no play! While the New Years Eve revelling had been going on inside a dry, warm hall incipient rain commenced and it just rained and rained, washing out one volleyball court and one tenniquoit court, completely preventing any outdoor sport until late afternoon when some miniten could be played.

Table tennis and Indoor bowls prospered with many spectators. Thank goodness for the hall! There were some good table tennis clashes with Charles (AOHC) and Colin (Wellington) resuming their battle of old for the Men's Singles. This year Col in managed to win an exciting three setter. June (Canty), a fine player outplayed the normally aggressive Heather (Wgtn) to take the Ladies singles again and then combined with Des to subdue Heather and Colin in the Mixed doubles. Mark (P. Nth) showed a lot of promise in the Junior events and with his brother David has prospects for future rallies.

Fifth Day: A calm, starry, frosty night (frosty?!!) revealed a fine morning for the final day. It was all go now with every spare minute needed to complete the programme Wellington Ray's volleyball team played steadily to win the final over AOHC Con's team after a tense and exciting second set. The Valley Stompers jazz band struck up belatedly as the camera snapped the boys for the records: Ray, Colin, Reg, Dick, Phil and George.

It was a happy scene on the lawn for a quick lunch before the Top Tan finals and then over to the miniten courts for the battle of the fit, the thrust and parry of ball against bat. It was all AOHC! Though "outsiders" tried hard, like Veronica and June (Canty) and Heather and Colin (Wgtn), they were trespassers in the land of dominance. They were captives in the net of experience and the superiority of Barry and Helen, of Greg and Des, of Dick, of youngsters Sara and Robert, Alan and Bart. And who will easily forget, the sight of tanned and fit "birthday boy" Neil together with young Robert - probably his junior by 40 years - battling out a tense final against son, Greg, and his partner Des?

Also dominant were the masters of the tenniquoit ring from Gisborne/East Coast. It is a sport that demands stamina and co-ordination of eye and mind, agility and dexterity. They had it in the wiry Graham, the indefatigable Ian taking time off from National Presidential duties, and the steady, long armed Bevan. No-one could challenge them seriously though Trevor (Taranaki) gave a good account of himself to reach the final of the Open singles. The years ahead look promising too, with Juniors Susan and lan already competently winning their events.

Throughout the fourth and fifth days Indoor bowlers had been locked together in friendly, concentrated rivalry giving praise to the excellence of the hall floor which gave them the chance to enjoy this popular new rally sport. It was fitting that the three events were won by members of the smaller clubs and encouraging to see so many participating who were not able to compete in the more vigorous outdoor sports.

The Day After: The weather turned bad once again on the final evening and as people next day packed up soggy tents and belongings, children paddled through water-logged sports courts while it rained, and it rained, and it rained...

But the rally sport was over, now locked in our memories, and not even the Wellington rain could drown the friendships, old and new, renewed and created in the mud between the showers and the sun and the wind.

N.Z.S.A. OFFICERS REPORT

President      IAN FAIRBROTHER

It was pleasing to hear at the Annual General Meeting that the Free Beach Group had made moves to become associate members of the New Zealand Sunbathing Association.

Nothing but good can come from this type of association as it adds strength when putting the case for changes to the Police Offences Act, these people being vitally interested in this legislation. It also gives a certain amount of credibility if groups, either Club or Free Beach Group, are confronted on beaches or rivers, not to mention the legal aid aspect.

I feel the N.Z.S.A. should encourage all forms of nudism, naturism, sunbathing, call it what you like, providing of course the group concerned has one or all of these headings as their main aim, whether it is in commercial, club or beach group form. I'm afraid it's the old story of "United we stand..."

Treasurer      JOHN MILLER

It gives me great pleasure to be physically able to write this report today - believe me, I would love to have been at the Rally. My accident was very badly timed and I hope to be a little more careful in the future.

My financial report was to be very short indeed, as I'm sure that no Treasurer would be very long-winded about a deficit. I trust your readers will forgive me for postponing my report until the Half Annual General Meeting if I manage to last that long.

However, through your columns I would particularly like to speak to members of clubs which are not affiliated to the N.Z.S.A. and who therefore have declined to support the International Nudist Movement.

Readers, this Magazine has been, and is only possible through the concerted efforts of N.Z.S.A. affiliated Clubs. IF your Club does not belong to the N.Z.S.A., surely it does not support the Sun Club movement as a whole. Your Club is only possible today because of previous concerted efforts by dedicated N.Z.S.A. Members. If I read in the N.Z.S.A. Official Magazine that your Club has increased its membership because of this Magazine, then surely you should convince your committees that your club should become affiliated to the New Zealand organisation.

Together we will grow stronger, but divided we will surely fall.

If you have a little doubt about the benefits your club, or you as individuals would get from affiliation with the N.Z.S.A. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that we are part of a world-wide organisation, the I.N.F. and that N.Z.S.A. membership automatically makes you a part of this Organisation. Members who have travelled overseas will be able to tell you that their I.N.F. Passports have been of great benefit to them.

IF there is still any doubt in your mind, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Women's Representative      JENNIFER FAIRBROTHER

There has been some discussion on the benefits obtained from real nudism, physically and mentally. Those nudists who have tried it, know that when one gets "up tight" or otherwise in a nervous state, to lie on the ground in the sun and really forget the world and relax, does more good than any number of pills and potions (of course when it comes to hot sun and fair skin, moderation rules every time). But I wonder how many people with real nervous troubles or similar health problems are ever told by their doctors to try it?

Another aspect I have often thought about is the sexual pervert, the "Peeping Tom", the sex offender who attacks innocent girls and women, and such like. Surely for these sick people life in our nudist clubs must have untold benefit on their minds? I know they would probably need supervision etc., but I do think this is something that should be discussed seriously by the medical experts. I know that there have been people who have joined clubs with ulterior motives but have soon changed their minds or left the club out of sheer boredom.

NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL RESORT

At last we have discovered the property we have been looking for. A 'Gem' approximately 20 acres situated just 23 miles from Taupo and 40 miles from Rotorua. Centred in the midst of one of New Zealand's top tourist thermal resorts and bordering on the shores of Lake Okakuri this must be one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the country. Without hesitation the steering committee urge all members to take this opportunity and purchase this property for our own national resort.

Remember, this is not a New Zealand Sunbathing Association or Club project. It is strictly a business proposition with each member a shareholder owning his or her own share of our national resort, bearing in mind that the complex will be owned and operated by nudists with the object of promoting and furthering the cause of nudism throughout New Zealand.

When fully developed it is envisaged that the profits will be loaned to individual clubs at low or nil interest, thus promoting the development of our own clubs.

Some facilities we could expect to enjoy would be greatly discounted holidays with families of people with like mind, hot or cold swims all year round, tent and caravan parks, squash courts, conference hall, sports area, bush walks, boating marina on the lake, and nudism.

The cost to you is just $100 cash, or if you like, $2 per week for 56 weeks. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Your share will be registered. They will be refundable. The complex will be owned and operated by you or your representative. However, think of this, before we can buy we need your commitment. This offer will not last forever so send your cheque today to:

THE HOT SPRINGS PURCHASING TRUST

P.O. BOX 10-270, TE RAPA

Or write for Bank Order Form for $2 per week. Enclose your name, address and club please.

LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

The 1976/77 A.G.M. is over and we still go home wondering what has the N.Z.S.A. to offer smaller clubs. Our delegates travel hundreds of miles in a year to meetings to vote for their club.

A club has this right by being a financial member of the N.Z.S.A., but is it worth it. After the A.G.M. at Wellington it was suggested that at least three clubs voted at the A.G.M. which were not financial members. These clubs also participated in the sports and other benefits of the Rally. Why bother to be financial when other clubs can get away with it? Refer N.Z.S.A. Rule: 3 (d).

At the A.G.M. voting became a farce when a motion was passed on a voice count, then by a show of hands, then as it still didn't suit, by a club vote which completely reversed the voting. Refer N.Z.S.A. Rule 8.

At the same meeting Gisborne Club was granted a loan of $1,000 for what? If the N.Z.S.A. want a loan, they have to abide by the N.Z.S.A. Rule 12. This money has been granted to a club not for updating or improving their grounds, but, I suggest, for the improvement of grounds for the next rally. After the rally, and when the loan is repaid, what benefit will the host club have had out of this loan. If this money is going to be lent to a club for outside club use some guarantee must be obtained on a mortgage over the period of time of the loan to protect this loan.

With just these suggested anomalies, really all motions passed at the A.G.M. must be null and void and placed on the agenda again for the ½ A.G.M.

Yours faithfully,
C. R. Lennox PRESIDENT
NORTH SHORE SUN CLUB (INC.)

Dear Editor,

I suggest that altering the NZ Naturist to cater for the likes of R.E. and J.M. (No. 80) would be at the risk of antagonising the more genuine style of reader. You would gain only a few of the voyeur readership because they are amply catered for in overtly erotic publications, but you would likely lose the quality-of--life readership. In the case of J.M., we can only guess what his idea of "serious" is. He says he "doesn't buy porn" but he wants the NZ Naturist "dished up a bit" as a substitute. My advice to him is: "Do buy porn, and leave us the NZ Naturist without it."

The remarks by R.E. are quite misleading. The point about the artists' advice is that a body which has selected parts cloaked with scraps of textile is in an unnatural state and excites unnatural reactions. This point does not apply to a naked body, whatever the angle of viewing. The inference that a study which does not display genitals is "deliberately hiding" them could be turned the other way: a study in which genitals are visible is "deliberately exhibiting" them.

One must ask why this R.E. is not satisfied with the Naturist's customary proportion of full-frontal studies. If he is a social naturist, surely he sees enough genitals on his club outings. If he is not a practising naturist, I do not think he has the right to expect all naturist models to display their genitals for his benefit. On the contrary, where models are shy of obliging the voyeur element, it is not to their discredit.

To the editorial team, I would say that I hope you resist the demands in question. It is interesting how such demands typically include a renunciation of porn, just as a prude begins a complaint with "I'm no prude, but...". Please, carry out your excellent policy of concentrating on the naturalness of each study which, far from RE's argument, does not mean absolute preference for full frontals. However, I submit it does mean an even sun-tan, and models who will not spend an extra hour or two on this before posing are not showing much interest in naturism. Best wishes,

GUY GRAVES

Dear Sir,

After my analogy, 'The Uniform Always Fits', I was delighted to see a letter from no less than the President of Australian Capital Territories Nudist Club, Mr Rick Venning.

Lets hope that other clubs will follow suit (if you'll excuse the word), and call themselves Nudist Clubs.

Looking through the directory of clubs, both N.Z. and Australian, I note there are only two clubs who call themselves nudist clubs. There are health clubs, sun clubs, and combination of sun, health and outdoor etc.

This is not sour grapes, but I'm suggesting that the time has come to call our clubs nudist clubs. I realise how the anomalous titles started. The plain fact was that many years ago, many newspapers would not publish an advertisement that contained the word nudist; so nudist clubs had to advertise as "something similar" clubs.

I believe that time has now passed. Indeed, I believe it went out about the same time as those ridiculous black squares which used to mutilate nudist photos. (One for a man, three for a lady).

In December issue I was delighted to read R.M. who is a nudist and also a supporter of the Society for Protection of Community Standards. There is much food for thought here. Although I don't agree with all that this society does, they have more in common with nudists than they think. Most nudists are not alcoholics, not peeping toms, not drug users, not rapists, not selfish, not bashers, etc. etc.; we have more in common with Patricia Bartlett than she realises.

Yours faithfully,

John Hemsworth

Dear Sir,

We do very much enjoy each issue, No. 80 has just arrived. Each editor seems to bring new ideas and increasing quality to your fine magazine, in an era when so many so-called nudist magazines have blatantly degenerated. May we offer one suggestion? Use envelope-type mailers for each issue, to mail it flat. The present tightly-rolled mailing does it more harm than good.

We'd very much welcome letters from Australian and New Zealand couples and families who share our interests in nudism, photography, skin diving, or beach combing. Sincerely,

Dr. & Mrs. C. J. RAYMOND
P.O. Box 35666, Houston, Texas 77035 U.S.A.

Dear Sir,

It may fairly be claimed that the "nudist, back-to-nature movement" was foisted on the general public by a catchpenny Press approach which, as so often, missed the real point at issue. The pioneers had little notion of founding a movement but gave effect to their convictions that the future of civilisation meant getting away from the "fight against Nature" stance, becoming vitally aware of the extent that man's wants might impinge on resources without wrecking humanity's chances of survival. Nudity was and is, in appropriate circumstances, a bonus which heightens sensitivity to one's own place in the natural setting when the concrete jungle can be left behind.

Now that public opinion permits a wider view of the "appropriate circumstances", the Keith's and Leena's should aim their campaign to the interested with emphasis on the direct personal benefit, at little cost in effort, to be derived from getting away from it all, including one's gear. They might remember that they are offering to share their creditable enthusiasm with those who have only mild interest and inhibitions! This way they will run less risk of unwittingly reinforcing any inference of over-enthusiasm which damns most "isms", and especially the the idea of nakedness for its own sake. If the word "naturism" has to be redefined, so be it, and let it cover the broadest vista of concern for our environment, ourselves and their mutual dependence.

With conservation becoming of more and more vital interest to us all with every day that passes, there are enough groups and journals to let present Sun Clubs and magazines stick to the personal and family approach, to take their share in keeping the System in working order, and getting great enjoyment and relaxation out of it into the bargain. What greater satisfaction can the present nudist movement hope for than to see it become utterly unnecessary? And what matter if everyone is a member (an active member) from the day they are born?

Jacobus Apricus

Dear Sir,

Another Australian Nudist Federation Convention has come and gone. Club members have once again travelled up to 2,000 miles. More than 70 Sunseekers came from Perth and two elderly Darwin members arrived in a Combi-van. Naturally beautiful and now splendidly developed, Helios is situated in the heart of the beautiful Dandenongs. The biggest and best club house in the business, including kitchen, showers and sauna, fronted by a terrace which overlooks the new heated swimming pool. A green valley of sunbathing areas and playgrounds backed by a hill decorated with alpine chalets, all set in unspoiled forest.

As big as the grounds are they could not accommodate all the tents and caravans of the 1,100 who attended, but a neighbour allowed the club to turn his green valley into a nudist caravan park. This was part of the friendly co-operative involvement of the people of the neighbourhood, who a few years ago would not be seen near Helios.

A farmer seemed to enjoy pulling caravans in and out with his tractor more than hay carting. The school bus ran tours. The storekeeper, butcher, greengrocer, baker, frozen goods man, the publican and the fancy goods man, all set up in business on the grounds and the friendly police protected us from undesirables. We had weather to suit all tastes. One extreme fire-danger day of 40°, one wet day, one sunny day and the others very cool. The latter being ideal for the main interest - volleyball. The 4 main teams were well matched. The grand old Tindo team, now over the hill, were overtaken by the three young teams. The final being what an interstate umpire described as the best volleyball he'd ever seen. Helios and Northside running it to 2 all and a close finish. Each of the finalist teams being 5 boys and one girl. The girls being included for no other reason than they were better than any available boys. Tall, grey bearded, Norbot, one-time top player of Sun Valley and now coach of Helios, was still able to play in one game as a substitute.

The Convention meeting was friendly and businesslike, most of the time being taken up by success reports from clubs and of the drive for free beaches.

Werner Dorfl, for years past A.N.F. President or Secretary and twice I.N.F. Delegate retired, being succeeded as president by Alan Neicho who retired last year as vice-president to concentrate on his job as Helios president to supervise this wonderfully well organised Convention. Mary Weston carries on as Secretary as only she can do, assisted by diplomatic, tactful, former president and vice-president Ted Weston. Our A.N.F. is fortunate in having had over the last few years as members of the executive, capable people who are all friends who after relinquishing office remain in close touch.

It was nice to see not only so many pioneers of our movement, but more so to see many of the children of early conventions present as country couples or newly weds. We all enjoyed a film night, a concert, a New Years Eve Ball. The film Jesus Christ, Super Star, and the final ball was one to be remembered. About a thousand, including local residents, following the first dances reserved for those most important people, the children, enjoyed a top Melbourne band and fine acrobatic ballet dancing by a Melbourne Troupe, on holiday at River Valley Sun Club, who drove 200 miles to perform. After singing Aulde Lang Syne all had to sleep before an early start, to visit other clubs on the way home.

Our Convention Rallies are not only happy gatherings, but make it possible to hold our clubs, thousands of miles apart, in a close knit federation for everyone knows each distant club as a bunch of close friends.

Yours sincerely,

SANDY McDONALD

CLUB NEWS

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

Over the holiday season a large number of members and visitors camped out at "Oranui." Our weather was a vast improvement on last years dismal effort. At the same time many inquiries regarding membership have been handled. Some have become members, and we extend to them a warm welcome. Past happenings which have also occurred have been the children's Christmas party with Santa paying his usual visit followed by a movie cartoon parade. The New Years Eve function was an impromptu affair, nevertheless, enjoyable.

Although it was a case of battling the elements during the rally at Wellington spirits remained high. Our sports competitors were successful in miniten and tenniquoits.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC.

The summer season, on balance, has been pretty good both weather-wise and socially. The good liaison built up with the other Auckland Clubs has been consolidated.

Our membership growth rate has not been spectacular, but we are not discouraged. With the onset of autumn our sauna is proving a real boon as the cooler weather makes itself felt.

A ground maintenance and improvement programme is planned for autumn and winter. So, all going well, by next spring we should have an area cleared for camping on a casual or semi-permanent basis.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

We attended the Rally in strength and did our thing as usual with the community cooking bit. A few members of "Oranui" joined us in this.

We had a very successful open day with some 200 visitors on the grounds. Applications came in thick and fast. North Shore Club swelled our ranks and beat us at volleyball - on our own grounds too.

Many of our members visited other clubs on their way home from the rally and without exception were made to feel very welcome at whatever club they visited, this is one of the great things about nudism, the feeling that you are welcome wherever you go.

We held our usual inter-club social in January and held a successful Open Day on World Nudism Day, 13 February.

Progress on the Clubhouse building is good, but we have a long way to go before it is completed

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB INC.

Well we've done it!! With double our quorum present, at a Special General Meeting, a majority voted to drop the ambiguous "dark ages" euphemism "Sun Club" South Auckland once again leads the way by being the first Nudist Club in New Zealand. We are now the South Auckland Nudist Club Incorporated. And now we say "It can and should be done - come on other clubs, lets all come out in the open and say what we are - NUDISTS!"

MANAWATU SUNSEEKERS CLUB (INC.)

Although 1977 heralded it's approach with rain, winds and snow, we're still hoping, here in the damp Manawatu, that we shall get some summer yet. Unfortunately, as Palmerston North notoriously empties at holiday periods, many of our members have followed the trend and gone seeking the sun elsewhere in New Zealand. We did, however, manage to have a very enjoyable Christmas party on one of the sunniest days this summer, Father Christmas arrived and several members became brighter as the day went on.

I believe that we had several visitors from other clubs on their way North from the rally. Unfortunately, as I said, many of our members were away and we were sadly lacking in welcoming parties. Thank you to those who visited, sorry if you missed us, and hope we'll see you again soon. Just give Bev a ring at 71700 PN and she'll tell you how to take advantage of our set-up here, it's quite convenient.

By the way Wanganui - gird thy loins, dear friends. The Red Hagg Trophy has not been contested yet this summer and a "Challenge," may be winging its way towards you soon.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB INC.

Summer seems to have settled in now, and with lots more fresh spring water gushing into our pool Rapere is a great place to be (as many people returning from the Wellington Rally would agree).

And speaking of Rally, our Club has officially registered it's disapproval that, once again, motions were put and major decisions made without the required two months notice being given. In addition it was disconcerting to find that some Clubs had been allowed to use their votes, even though they had not paid their affiliation fees for the new financial year, thus making their vote unconstitutional and the decisions null and void.

The changeover to ownership of our grounds on a shareholding basis is now well in hand, quite an exciting prospect, and one which we hope will prove of great benefit to the club in future. Details on this were contained in the June '76 issue.

Our Open Day, though beautifully organised, was rather quiet. Several of the interested who did turn up have since been welcomed as new members.

Our latest money raising venture, the sale of over 200 Christmas trees, grown on the grounds, went like a bomb. Unfortunately one of the main organisers of the venture, and N.Z.S.A. Treasurer, John Miller, managed to part company with his motorcycle. A few worrying days for family and friends, but he seems to have regained all his old cheek and is well on the mend.

Our social scene is quickly described, pathetic. Several functions were planned but support was sadly lacking. Usually the same few turn up for both social and working occasions.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY (INC.)

We've had a fairly busy three months one way and another and have nearly finished the pool - we had it all arranged to pour the floor but the weather, once more was against us.

Our youth group has started up again and hopefully will be able to get themselves organised.

Despite the weather at the Rally, Wellington's name is not mud - they kept things going whenever possible and introduced Top Tan which WE WON!! (It must suit our nutty personalities.) We also managed to shout our volley-ball teams into 5th and 8th positions.

Visited Palmerston North on the way home and enjoyed their putting green and 'Twister' game.

NORTHERN SUNSEEKERS INC.

After a trip to the Rally my advice to all Naturists is, come North. Whoever first coined the phrase "Windy Wellington" was a master of understatement.

Our only news of note is that we were given a $100 grant by the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, to replace children's play equipment. Of course this was most welcome.

We have found that with the acceptance of beaches where nude swimming occurs, there appears to be a falling off in members attending the club grounds, as a lot of our members are closer to such a beach, than the club. It would seem to answer the question that we used to debate years ago. "Would the relaxation of laws regarding nudity, mean a reduction in the membership of clubs?"

NELSON SUN CLUB (INC.,

This has been the wettest season in the history of the Nelson Sun Club. Lucky for us there has been no major damage to the grounds. The ford stood up to the torrent of water that came down the normally dry creek (at midsummer) but it showed us that further work will be necessary to prevent the major damage we suffered four years ago.

The rain did not prevent Santa Claus arriving by helicopter the Sunday before Christmas laden with presents for all the children, It was a real pleasure to see the joy on the children's faces as Santa distributed the toys, a real ray of sunshine on a wet and dismal day.

At least the water storage tank has been completed, this will solve the water problem we have suffered over the years. The ablution block is all but completed. The flush toilets finished in time to cope with the influx of visitors we have over the holiday period.

WANGANUI SUNCLUB (INC.)

Congratulations to Gisborne for their successful bid to host the next Rally - we wish them every success. We are sure that all Naturists are looking forward to this and will give all their support with the hope that it will be the start of the return to the old style rally held in the early days.

One always looks forward to the Rally firstly as a place to renew old and respected friendships with people from all over N.Z., and secondly to enjoy the competition in the sporting events. The inclement weather over the 1976 rally certainly helped the first more than the second.

Perhaps the powers that be will have to consider holding the rally at a later date each year, as the weather over Christmas is becoming considerably wetter and very much against our aims and objects as Nudists.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB (INC.)

Our search for permanent grounds continues, but we are still able to offer visitors very relaxing surroundings at the valley, plus the coldest creek for cooling off on the hot days which have been plentiful in our area.

We are changing our public image and becoming a more open club with phone numbers and contact members names readily available to the public. Our membership stands now at twenty-eight units of a wide age range.

Materials are being gathered at present for the construction of a small, necessary and readily movable clubhouse. This, we hope, will see the end of the dashes into the bush, when committee meetings and gatherings are interrupted by rain.

A very small contingent from Rotorua eventually attended the Rally at Wellington. Our eye-catching banner was proudly displayed at every opportunity and amazingly returned home safely. Distinctive red T-shirts were to be seen on the go all week determined to make their owners presence felt in every activity. We think we can say that we were recognised for more than just getting in the way. The play activities provided by the Wellington club for the children during the Rally were enjoyed by our pre-school representative, and greatly appreciated by his parents. Our congratulations to Wellington on their fine facilities, and thank you for a very enjoyable Rally.

Taranaki Naturists treated Rotorua members to an extremely friendly weekend of socialising and sport after the Rally. We encourage fellow nudists to make the effort to visit this young progressive club, as you are assured of a great welcome equalled only by that at Rotorua.

AURORA SUNSEEKERS INC.

In December we held our combined Children's Christmas Party - Open Day, after a week's delay owing to bad weather. The day turned out brilliantly fine and warm. The club grounds seemed to be crowded with children and adults all enjoying themselves. The previous evening it was the adult's turn with their pre-Christmas Wine and Cheese Evening, and this was also warmly supported and thoroughly enjoyed.

We are now will into summer, and by now most of us are back at work after what we hope has been a relaxing holiday. Of course the secret of a good holiday is to come back completely refreshed with a lovely suntan, yet not getting burnt in those "tender places."

As the year progresses we are back into regular activities such as our Sunday night saunas at the Leisure Centre and Thursday night swim evenings have recommenced.

NORTH SHORE SUN CLUB (INC.)

Open day over, swimming pool officially opened, over three hundred fed and watered; weather fine, wind nil, flies - millions?

A good time had by visitors from several clubs and prospective members, who all made good use of the volleyball court, tenniquoits and swing ball, with plenty of swims in between afternoon tea and the hangi. Remember visitors are always welcome, Sunday is our social day.

We have now resumed our swim nights at Ricardo's, Parakai: introduce your friends to the club atmosphere followed by a friendly meal in the restaurant afterwards; come one, come all and meet the Noisy North at play.

TARANAKI NATURIST'S CLUB INC.

Our pool complex was officially opened by one of our local MPs, Mr. Tony Friedlander on 5 December, despite the fact that you could hardly see the pools from the clubhouse for the low cloud. However we were able to have a successful Open Weekend the following weekend, and show off our grounds to our many visitors in brilliant sunshine.

We had a successful Rally at which club members won the pairs and fours of bowls, and also a member in the singles final of tenikoits. Everyone enjoyed the "Top Tan" competition and complimented Wellington on running it and successful Rally despite the weather.

Following the Rally we had a most enjoyable visit by Rotorua Sun Club, when another round of energetic sports was played, as well as acquiring some more tan. We hope all visitors to our club this summer enjoyed their stay, and we hope we will see many of you again at our Club Cabaret on 17 September.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

Since the National Rally we are almost expected to say "Cheep Cheep" rather than "Hello" from the B.O.P. What a terrific time those members of our club who attended had and what great enthusiasm they have brought back with them The club is finding itself on an upward swing, both in the enthusiasm of the members and in the number of applications to loin. The work that has been done on the grounds in recent months enables members to do just whatever they feel like doing, be it a game of volleyball, a Bush Walk for an hour or two, just sitting around lazing in the sun, or, on wet days, socialising in the clubhouse.

Over the next few months we have a variety of Saturday Evening Specials planned, these have been very popular over the past couple of years and this year looks like being no exception. "Cheep Cheep."

NYC TRY A FITNESS COURSE

We started our Rally on a bit of a wet note by leaving the main rally with an inch of water under our tents, as we headed towards Emil's place to hang up our tents.

After welcoming two new members over beans on toast, we reorganised the food and everyone's gear on the Rover.

On the way to the Outward Bound Camp we only had one mishap, which was Peter who ran into a slip with his Ute damaging the front guard.

On arrival Emil and Bill shuttled back and forth, over the swollen stream in their Rovers, unloading gear inside the cookhouse.

Leslie was the first to wash in the stream, as he had copped a face full of mud as he sat in his car, watching Warwick drop a wheelie on the grass.

Everyone sorted out which packs were theirs before claiming their bunks for an early night.

The second day the weather cleared to an occasional drizzle with most awaking about 9 am. After breakfast it was decided that we have a go at the Commando rope course. The main point of interest was the bridge. It is a walk bridge consisting of four steel ropes, strung between two trees about 60 feet apart. One rope was to walk on, two were for balance and the fourth was a safety rope to which safety belts were attached.

The exercise of the bridge was to climb 30 feet up a rope ladder, walk across the bridge whilst two people shook it, and climb down a knotted rope.

Next came the flying fox, with a really quick take off and ending with a fast run. You had to run fast if you didn't want to scrape your knees on the ground

In the afternoon we decided to build a swimming hole for washing. Some of us collected big rocks from upstream whilst others placed them to build a dam. Finishing touches were made with shingle filling in the gaps to bring the water level to 3 feet higher than when we started and the hole was christened by Tracy who was accidentally pushed in with half her clothes on.

I would say that the quickest baths in history were made there. The water was so cold you had to wet yourself, dash out, soap yourself, and rinse yourself, being in the water a total of about 9 seconds. While some washed themselves others dug a hole for a hangi the following day.

The next day firewood was stacked, ready to fire up on our return from Paraparaumu. On our arrival at the Paraparaumu shopping centre we discovered that they close Wednesday so that they can trade on Saturdays.

After postcards were posted - luckily the post office was still open - and the trouble sorted out in Emil's Rover's engine, we picked up supplies and headed back to the Outward Bound.

On our return, petrol was poured onto the firewood to assist it lighting. As it was lit, the flame flashed up Martin's arm. He was rushed to a milk pail of water and was later taken to a doctor to have his arm properly dressed.

We finished the day with the hangi cooked to perfection.

On Thursday we were awoken with two bangs. The three with gun licences had returned from an unsuccessful hunt.

Breakfast was quickly over and done with so that we could get our A.G.M. started. Our A.G.M. was adjourned halfway through to search for a visiting parent's glasses, which were lost in an unexpected swim in the bigger stream. After half an hour and no sign of the glasses, we were called back to the meeting

After the meeting we decided to redirect the stream in an effort to find the glasses. After most of the water was rerouted, Leslie found the glasses in the shallow.

Someone then suggested that we should have a mud fight. Everyone laid their soap and shampoo ready by the second dam, and charged up to the mud hole.

Those who chickened out when they saw the mud, still seemed to end up covered in it.

Following a barbecue we went to try our hand at eeling. At the end of the evening, I had landed one, and Martin and Denise almost landed three.

Friday morning Jimi woke us nice and early, as we had decided to go to the beach. The surf didn't prove too good, but the day turned out to be a real scorcher, with most getting burnt.

On our return to the camp, we stopped in Paraparaumu for a couple of hours of shopping, followed by an hour or so, trying to round up everyone.

The last day was started with a race up one of the nearest hills, which would have been about 150 feet high with a grade of about one in one. With about 20 minutes rest at the top, some decided that they had enough energy to race down again.

Shortly afterwards, we packed up the cars and cleaned out the huts to be gone about one o'clock.

REPORT OF EIGHTH ANNUAL

CONVENTION-SPORTS RALLY

OF THE

AUSTRALIAN NUDIST FEDERATION

The 8th Annual Convention-Sports Rally of the Australian Nudist Federation was hosted by the Helios Society members of Victoria, between December 27 and January 2 inclusive.

The grounds would be among the most beautiful of our Australian clubs, and together with the friendliness and superb organisation of our Helios friends, all combined to contribute to yet another highly successful and thoroughly enjoyable convention-rally.

December 28 was convention meeting day, with representation by delegates from sixteen of our eighteen affiliated clubs, plus the successful affiliation of a further three clubs, A.C.T. Nudist Club, Brindabella Sun Club (A.C.T.), and Naturi (N.S.W.), and notice of intention to affiliate at the 1977 Convention by Sunland Nudist Holiday Village in South Australia and Sol in Victoria.

The A.N.F. has never been stronger, and is now the longest running nudist organisation that Australia has ever had.

It was with regret that the meeting did not receive a re-nomination of A.N.F. President Werner DorfI. After his long service to the A.N.F. many tributes were made and received with acclamation. Werner's "Colourful Character" will be missed at the Head of the Table.

Elections resulted in Alan Neicho (Helios Society Inc.) being elected our A.N.F. President for the next two years, with Trevor Rose (Tindo, S.A.) Vice President, Mary Weston Secretary/Treasurer and Ted Weston Assistant Secretary, both from Corio Club in Victoria.

Host Club for the 1977 Convention-Rally will be Sunseekers Inc. of Western Australia, and by the enthusiasm shown with their large attendance at Helios, despite an extremely long journey to "Be There," the A.N.F. anticipates a reciprocal spirit at Sunseekers on December 28 when we all assemble again.

Lengthy discussions took place over many subjects, including the New Zealand Naturist, Australian Club Directory, World Nudist Day and Club Activities to Promote Nudism; I.N.F. Congress and future mode of Affiliation, Free Beaches, Standardisation of sports rules, and A.N.F. Passports (for financial members of affiliated clubs).

The providing by the host club to all delegates of a beautiful meal and wine drew to a close a very positive, satisfying 8th Convention Meeting.

These results were the culmination of many spirited efforts by contestants and ALL are to be congratulated on their team and friendly spirit.

AUSTRALIAN

CLUB NEWS

HELlOS SOCIETY LIMITED

After 12 months of steady preparation and a final flurry of activity the Helios Society found itself almost ready to welcome Convention visitors to their property near Gembrook, on Boxing Day 1976.

Only a few small jobs were not completed in time and the detailed arrangements made by the Convention Committee paid off in a smooth inflow and settlement of our guests.

They came from near and far by bus, plane, train and car - one even arrived on a push bike. Clubs from all states were represented and a lone family from the disbanded Hobart club was present. Long distance travellers came from Townsville and Darwin but the members/distance aggregate goes to the Sunseekers contingent from Western Australia who, apart from independent travellers, hired a 37 passenger bus for the 2600 mile jaunt.

The high esteem in which Helios is held locally was evident in the service and assistance afforded by local traders, police, fire brigade and citizens in general who all did their utmost to help us make welcome our many callers.

BRINDABELLA SUN CLUB, A.C.T.

December 28th, 1976 was a proud day for us, we became affiliated with the Australian Nudist Federation.

Mo Wedd, our Vice President, although a little nervous in front of the Convention Delegates, read out our presentation report in fine style. Only having resided in Australia for two years Mo was a little concerned about her English.

A new item has been added to our outings, water skiing at an in-land water resort.

The Committee took an hour to decide upon our official flag, eighteen designs were submitted, the final decision was the combination of two designs. Lyle worked hard on the design to get it out by Convention time. Our flag is the most modern of club flags.

Keith A. Wedd

President

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB INC.

With the start of a new year, this club is looking forward to continued expansion. Summer activities are well in hand, the swim and sauna nights proving a continued success. We were successful in our application for affiliation with the Australian Nudist Federation, becoming the twentieth club to join the national body. Our representatives had a lot of fun during the convention. Although we didn't win the wooden spoon we made many friends.

Two areas of main concern this year will be the provision of better facilities at the Free Beach at Kambah, and the search for our own club grounds. We will also be visiting other clubs during the year, have our usual social activities, camping weekends and swim nights ... we may even practice our sporting prowess for the convention at Sunseekers!

Actan No. 1, our very own Suntan Oil has been produced and sales are quite good so far... and it really is an effective sunscreen, uniquely Eucalyptus scented. We will have our new Actan No. 2 ready around May and this will have all the properties of its predecessor plus the added advantage of an insect repellant.

Visitors to Canberra, and we hope there are many during the year, are always welcome to join in our activities. All you need to do is ring one of the committee listed in our newsletter, a copy of which is sent to all clubs, when you arrive and we guarantee to help make your stay more enjoyable. Postal inquiries can be made to P.O. Box 242 Woden, ACT. 2606.

THREE BEARS SUN CLUB, QUEENSLAND

We are having great weather as usual with many members and visitors camping. There were not many of us at the convention but thanks a million, for those who were able to represent us. The Bears are organising a vacation weekend entitled "Easterfest" from 8 to 11 April which will include general sports events. The evenings activities that follow will be a campfire, films, dancing, a photo-slide exhibition and an Easter Bonnet competition. Facilities for camping will be available for those attending.

NATURI, NEW SOUTH WALES

The passed year has been a good one for the club. There have been many improvements on the grounds and numerous inquiries regarding membership. Our club has an attractive badge which many members are now wearing. An excellent Social Evening was had by all at the "Hawkesbury Inn."

During Christmas/New Year period many members camped on the grounds and Father Christmas put in an appearance at the children's party.

A very useful demonstration was given to members on resuscitation of a member "rescued" from the swimming pool.

We are continuing our advertising campaign which has resulted in many inquiries. Naturi has now joined the Australian Nudist Federation and we hope for a great 1977. Visitors are welcome to look in on us and sample our hospitality.

Ode to the Golden Sun

(or the lack of it, depending where you are)

The Gumboot Rally began with a whizz

I slipped in the mud and

fell on my fizz

Thick sticky black stuff

all over the place

Did naught for the Rally

or for my face

No flies to contend with

most had all drowned

The survivors had all wisely

gone under ground

The birds blew away

in a force 10 gale

Leaving the nudists behind

looking forlorn and pale

North

The Rally is ended

must finish this dirge

Nothing to do

but get on the purge

Wet on the outside and

wet within

Nothing between

but a lot of pale skin

I'll pack up the family and

we'll all sally forth

to that sign on the highway

That say's simply...

NORTH

By one who survived

A little boy rescued a worm from a robin and called his grandfather to help him put it back into the ground. The old man could offer no advice and it seemed that they were beaten when the boy's face lit up with hope. He dashed off, returning shortly afterwards with a spray can of instant starch. Spraying the worm lavishly, he was able to slip it easily into the hole from which the robin had pulled it. Impressed with the boys ingenuity, the old man gave his grandson two dollars.

Next day Grandfather found the boy playing on the lawn and slipped him a further two dollars.

"What's that for?" asked the boy.

"That's from your Grandmother!"

A group of elderly married men were boasting about their families. "I've got five sons," said one, "enough for a basketball team."

"I've got six boys myself' another boasted, "I could make a hockey team."

"I have nine, all boys," said a third, "a baseball team."

They all turned to a little fellow who had been sitting quietly in a corner. "How many children have you got?" one of them asked him.

"Eighteen daughters," was his reply, "a golf course!"

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

The reports on the Australian Nudist Federation Convention are very interesting, particularly noteworthy for the enthusiasm shown by those attending. The distances travelled by some nudists, e.g. Darwin, Western Australia, makes the distance we have to travel in New Zealand inconsequential. Gives one food for thought when future N.Z. Rally venues are under consideration.

The editorial team are proud that returns for their last edition are considerably less than previous issues. It was, therefore, rather shattering to have copies of issue 81 returned from an overseas subscriber, with the comment that the magazine was too much toward soft porn. It's all in the eye of the beholder we suppose!

*   *   *   *

Reports in the Auckland newspapers in January 1977 commented that partial nudity and in some cases full nudity had become commonplace on Auckland beaches this summer. The general reaction being that so long as individuals behaved in a responsible manner then that was fine. A widely read columnist in a weekend newspaper commented "Restrictions on reasonable and appropriate exposure of the human body are dangerous. It indicates a rejection of the human body as basically decent. It panders to an unhealthy minority attitude that sees evil in any visible display of sections of the body"

There may be some confusion arising from just what number Rally was held over Christmas-New Year. For the record it was the 20th N.Z.S.A. Rally and the Wellington Sun Club's 25th Year Jubilee.

Also for the record, in the N.Z.S.A. Rules pertaining at 28th December 1976, a member club is not unfinancial until subscriptions are two months overdue, i.e. 1st January 1977.
