In commenting on the Supreme Court's decision to quash a conviction of a man for swimming nude at Little Palm Beach, Waiheke Island, Auckland, Miss Patricia Bartlett is reported to have said: No normal man can look at a naked woman without being aroused. Next thing they'll be fornicating on the beaches.'

This is a very interesting observation of the Secretary of the Society for the Promotion of Community Standards.

Two factors immediately come to mind.

(a) Dr. Fritz Pen, the eminent Gestault Therapist, has noted that one's utterances reflect one's own feelings and therefore they are a projection of how one would act in certain circumstances.

(b) Miss Bartlett's outcry assumes that only naked women's bodies are capable of arousing.

Could it not be that a naked man can arouse as well?

The conclusion one can draw from these two factors when the word 'woman' is substituted by 'man' is as revealing as the unclothed body.

There is strong possibility that those who seek to ban exposure of men's and women's bodies are themselves afraid of being aroused by the sight of naked bodies.

If this is so, then the obvious answer is for such people to keep away from temptations which they know they cannot resist.

However, they may also take comfort in the thought that a naked body does not automatically arouse unless one's mind is perpetually sex oriented.

Of even wider importance is that those same people who seek to impose 'their standards' on the majority of people should first seek to cleanse their own minds.

'Filth' or 'immodesty' is in the minds of the beholders. The naked sunbathers do not consciously seek to impose their nakedness on unsuspecting or sensitive people. Yet the Society - and it is representative of a minority group - seeks to impose their narrow-minded ideas and 'guilt complexes' on the majority who either accept naked bodies as normal or have the good sense to stay away from them if they find naked bodies objectionable.

It is about time that the Miss Bartletts of the world came to terms with their own shortcomings and learnt that they themselves need not feel guilty about seeing a naked body. They each have one, as they would find, when they are not too busy minding other people's business and, instead, looked to see themselves as they really are.

After all, it is not altogether facetious to say 'if God wanted us clothed, we would not have been born naked.'

Neither is it facetious to say that Miss Bartlett's utterances would carry more weight if she supported them with proof.

On the other hand, Miss Bartlett has been invited many times to Naturists functions to show her that her fears are unfounded. She has declined each time. If Miss Bartlett can sit through an uncensored version of 'Night Porter' then she owes it to herself to see the natural family life being lived by naturists.

FREE BEACHES

By Emiel Roland

This time there are two topics worth mentioning.

(1) The Heylen Research Poll of May 1975.

(2) The Supreme Court decision in the case of Mr G. Rogers v Crown.

The Heylen Research Poll follows herewith.

Q. At present New Zealand nudists are asking the authorities to declare some beaches "open" beaches. That means beaches where people are allowed to swim and sunbathe naked if they wish. Would you personally agree or disagree if some beaches were to be declared "open"?

Australia seems to be just that little bit ahead. It is also interesting to note that the women in Australia are not far behind the men. The gap in New Zealand is much wider; is the Australian woman more "liberated" than her N.Z. Counterpart?

But it certainly proves that the public opinion in N.Z. is ready for the idea to set beaches apart for nudists and sympathizers. Australian officials seem to realize the wishes of the population quicker than N.Z., showing in the many free beaches that are now set aside for the purpose of nude bathing if a person wishes to do so.

It was therefore a real milestone in our fight for the free beaches that Mr. Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court in Auckland decided to quash the conviction of Mr G. Rogers for offensive behaviour. Mr Rogers had been swimming in the nude at Little Palm Beach, Waiheke Island. Mr Rogers' counsel was Mr H. Beaven. (For details of the judgement, see separate article).

Further I must congratulate the Free Beach Group with their initiative to get those persons together who are interested in a free beach, but for special reasons not in a club. For particulars I direct you to the articles written by their chairman. I hope that we will co-operate very intensely in our common goal.

Nude Swim Appeal Succeeds

The nude swim of Graham Albert Rogers at Little Palm Beach, Waiheke, on February 22, was not offensive behaviour, Mr. Justice Wilson, a Supreme Court Judge in Auckland has ruled.

Rogers had appealed against his conviction of behaving in an offensive manner at a public place on Waiheke Island.

He had been convicted in the Auckland Magistrate's Court in June by Mr D G Sinclair, SM, and fined $10.

Mr Justice Wilson upheld Mr Rogers' appeal and quashed his conviction, saying it was difficult for a judge to determine what were the contemporary standards of the community.

The Judge said it was relevant to consider where the offence took place.

He said the offensive behaviour provision in the Police Offences Act was designed to prevent or forestall the commission of more serious offences.

There must be something in the behaviour which called for the intervention of criminal law. It must be likely to cause resentment or revulsion and the place and circumstances of the incident must be considered.

In Mr Rogers' case he had gone to the beach, swam in the nude and returned to the beach. Two others were on the beach and one of them, a woman, was topless.

Another family group arrived at the beach and it was not apparent that anyone had seen Mr Rogers.

He said Little Palm Beach had been used for nude swimming for a number of years and people went to it for that purpose.

The evidence did not show the prosecution had proved beyond a reasonable doubt that any person present was likely to have been offended.

If a complaint was made, that was not sufficient. The Court must determine as an objective test whether that person's (the complainant) view represented the standards of those present.

Mr. Rogers' counsel, Mr A. Beaven, presented five grounds for the appeal.

The first was that there was nothing intrinsically offensive in the human body and the judge said he was prepared to accept that and did not want to hear argument on it.

Other grounds were that according to an objective test of contemporary community standards of 'right-thinking persons' Mr. Rogers' was not offensive; in view of the place, circumstances and persons present his behaviour was not of a kind to cause resentment or revulsion; and his behaviour was not serious enough to warrant the interference of criminal law.

The last ground was the in the circumstances known to Mr Rogers at the time, he should not have been expected to appreciate his behaviour was calculated to cause resentment or revulsion to those present. The judge ruled this did not have to be proved by the prosecution to get a conviction and was not a proper ground for appeal.

Miss B's Dilemma

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir,

I am very concerned re: No normal man can look at a naked women without being aroused. Statement appeared in the Auckland Star as a result of an interview with the one and only Miss P. Bartlett. I am concerned that my doctor is Abnormal, along with a lot of other members of the medical profession, or did I arouse them, they certainly didn't seem aroused when I disrobed for routine examinations. I am also concerned that my husband and all other members of the nudist clubs that I have visited are abnormal, my husband does not always get aroused when I am naked, and the men at the clubs I have visited didn't get aroused even once. Dear sir what should I do, am I abnormal or are they abnormal or may I suggest it is Miss who is B. abnormal.

A.C.T. Aussies Aim For Nude Area

A group of citizens in the Australian Capital Territory are assisting Mrs. Worsley, who is a member of the Legislative Assembly, in her efforts to establish a nude swimming area within the A.C.T.

An article appeared in the Canberra Times newspaper some months ago outlining Mrs. Worsley's idea for a nude swimming area. I immediately wrote to her giving my family's support for the project and mentioned my past association of 25-years with the naturists movement, prior to my marriage, and now, happily, my wife and step-sons' association.

Mrs Worsley contacted me asking if I would gather people together for a meeting. This was done by advertising in the 'Canberra Times' for people interested in the nude swimming project to write care of the Australian Nudist Federation which I first contacted to receive approval.

Mary Weston, Secretary A.N.F., was very helpful by writing direct to those people who replied giving my home address and telephone number.

The first meeting, was attended by fifteen people. Mrs. Worsley was most impressed, especially with everything we covered during this meeting.

Our next meeting was with the First Secretary, and adviser on matters of law, Department of Capital Territory. These two gentlemen assisted us with points of the law, in the A.C.T. on nudity; what developments were going on in the A.C.T. This being a guide for a nude swim site.

The meeting lasted 1½ hours. Committee rooms, in the Department of Capital Territory Building, were made available for our use, so we were being taken seriously which pleased us all.

The Bill being introduced by Mrs. Worsley, is approximately 45th on the agenda of the A.C.T. Legislative Assembly. This gives us time to prepare a case for nude swimming, including a petition and a submission. The submission I prepared and has already been given to Mrs. Worsley. All we are waiting on are the petitions forms, which Mrs. Worsley is preparing.

A third meeting was held at Hackett, another A.C.T. suburb. Unfortunately Mrs. Worsley, due to her commitments, could not attend. We went over the ground which we had already covered and a pleasant evening was had by all.

I have been in contact with Mary Weston requesting details of the Northern Territory legislation approving a nude beach for Darwin. Mary advised this information will not be available for two weeks.

Until our Bill is before the Legislative Assembly we are avoiding any publicity in the local press, no doubt, when the petition is being circulated, the press will get wind of this and make enquiries. We don't want our opponents informed prior to the presentation.

The article printed below has been written by Dr Philip Who had to treat over 500 nudists at "Pineglades", Canterbury, last Rally. With the hot summer months and another Rally just around the corner, it is timely to note his comments on the "Rally Bug" business.

THE PINEGLADES BUG

— THE BARE FACTS!

Have you noticed, and it happens to all of us, that whenever we fall ill, it is never OUR fault. Always, there is some cursed agent (often as simple as one chip or twelve jugs of beer - if only we had known that chip was bad ... !) that is responsible for our demise.

We all learnt at school certain principles of plain common-sense. But later as adults (nearly) in a society whose technology is responsible for more than half the tribulations that beset our general fitness and wellbeing, anything that is free or is very simple, is automatically discarded out of hand.

Yet, every summer it is the same story. From a sedentary life predominantly, apart from the odd hours at weekends, our bodies are ridiculously covered by cloth of some sort. What is more, usually a fabric that whilst it allows the suns rays to penetrate, prevents the loss of any body fluid into the atmosphere. If there is a loss, it is at a rate which causes nothing more than extremely unpleasant 'heat rashes'.

But with advent of a holiday, and naturists are as bad in this respect as anybody, off come the clothes. An unreasonably disproportionate time is spent completely exposed to the sun's full power.

Now, I am not suggesting for one minute that we should immediately dive for our garments, but every one should be aware that the trees so conveniently growing in tidy and useful groups, are sufficient to provide considerable protection from the direct rays.

Everybody knows that people going to the tropics need salt. But nobody seems to think why. It is, of course, to ensure that as we perspire (or sweat) we don't become ill.

"But I don't sweat, doctor, my skin is as dry as a bone"! No, madam you don't sweat now. At least you can't see the sweat, for the simple reason that if the atmosphere is very dry, fluid will immediately evaporate on reaching the skin surface, itself already dry and parched.

"But I can't be too hot, because I feel quote chilly". This is the stage that is critical. Already short of water, the body's fine mechanism shuts down the peripheral (outside surface and extremities) circulation which keeps a good blood volume in the essential organs of the body, i.e. heart and lungs.

This loss of fluid during hot summer months following protracted exposure of the whole surface area of the body, means, of course, a corresponding loss of two important salts. Deficiency of these salts (Sodium and Potassium) play an important role in the production of 'heat injury' or 'dehydration'.

Everyone should know the unpleasant symptoms of excess water loss during the period of acclimatisation. Without suitable replacement of salt there is weakness; fatigue; cramp; nausea; and later vomiting and diarrhoea.

Any of these symptoms encourages people to immediately seize on a reason that is not only plausible, but precludes their accepting any responsibility - "Food Poisoning".

A study of healthy young naturists in hot areas during summer months revealed that the daily sweat rate was between 6 to 10 litres per day. Those engaged in the more active miniten competitions lost as much as 2 to 3 litres an HOUR.!

Thus, if we wish to ensure a naturist weekend is not spoiled, expose yourselves, particularly young children, gradually to direct rays of the sun. Use the shade provided by the trees. Drink plenty of bland fluid, and bring some salt tablets.

For those who have gone to the enormous trouble of providing such a magnificent array of varied entertainment, especially if it is to be on such a grand scale as that provided by the Canterbury Sun Club last year for the annual rally, it could well be prudent to obtain medical advice first. Advice would recommend having on hand an Oral Electrolyte Solution (a beverage containing the essential salts).

The solution is available as a powder in various flavours to make it interesting. Then it could be prepared simply by dissolving prepared measured sachets into a quart of water.

Each person present should drink 2 or 3 (4 in the case of those taking vigorous exercise) glasses a day. The organizers would then be spared the embarrassment of guests being ill. They would then have the satisfaction of not having a host of individuals, shivering and yawning, complaining bitterly of headaches, dizziness and blurred vision.

HANDLE EMOTION BY KEEPING IN MOTION

You need your emotions to function normally and enjoy life - but mismanaged, they can kill! Sudden bursts of anger, even frustration build-up caused by business and family problems, must be physically expressed or the end can be a heart seizure.

Our bodies contain a unique and complex defense system, originally designed for combat. Although the stress you face daily is seldom a physical threat, your body reacts as if it were. Nerves trigger hormones to flood the bloodstream, setting off a chain that mobilizes the body. Blood clotting time is speeded up, blood sugar and fat levels are elevated, heart rate is increased, blood pressure is raised, muscle tension is increased, and additional amounts of adrenalin are dumped into the bloodstream. The body is prepared to fight or flee.

But modern man doesn't fight or flee, he sits and broods. He internalises his frustrations, anxieties and hostilities, sometimes with deadly results.

For example, medical researchers have shown that speeded up clotting time increases the probability of blood clots forming in the arteries and veins. Elevated blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) have also been linked to greater heart risk. An over-secretion of adrenalin will eventually have harmful effects on the blood vessel linings and increase the tendency of blood fats to build up on the vessel linings.

Studies have also shown that excess adrenalin will also decrease the efficiency of the heart muscle and in some instances damage the heart muscle itself.

Sustained cortisol and other related hormone production will increase blood pressure and more importantly, sustain it - along with damaging the heart muscle and blood vessels.

Every persons (this article was originally intended for Executives) day is filled with emotionally charged situations, so what can he do to nullify the effects of his misspent chemistry?

He can exercise! In fact, exercise is one of the best ways to relieve the pressure of stress.

Here are a few exercises to use up those hormones:

- After each phone call, before you hang up, squeeze the phone as tightly as possible and then let go. This is a great way of getting rid of muscle tension.

- With arms parallel to the floor, clasp your hands in front of your chest and push as hard as possible. That too will help relieve tension.

- Rest your hands on your desk, feet about 3 to 4 feet away from the desk. Keep your back and arms straight, then slowly do a push-up. This is great for tense muscles in the back, shoulders and chest.

- Grasp the bottom of your chair with both hands, keeping your feet on the floor and your arms and back straight, and lift up - you will remain seated, but the tension will go.

- Walk! Find an excuse to walk - anywhere: to the washroom, for coffee, to the next department. Don't sit at your desk for more than an hour without a break, even if it consists of nothing more than marching around your desk a few times.

Ideally, a stationary bike, dumbbells, or other indoor exercise equipment should be available to help you work off steam.

The whole idea is to give yourself physical outlets for the physiological and psychological tension which is naturally and rightfully created by your hormones in the process of coping with daily stress.

"Get in Behind"

From Whanga - Gisnaki does its thing

So well supported is the Gisnaki Club winter cabaret, that it is now traditionally held in two halves, a few weeks apart. President Ned Fagg this year took the opportunity of visiting the extremes of his domain. It was especially pleasing to his supporters to entertain Ned's good lady at New Plymouth. She was taking a well earned rest from repairing the thriving Whangamomona Club's pool complex after the sheep dipping season.

Ned of course lives somewhat in the shade of his more famous relative Fred from further south. Observers tell us that relations between the two, whilst cordial, have never really recovered from the day when Fred took up with a new love named Patricia. A subsequent obsession with clothes resulted in Fred campaigning for increased subsidies on black singlets. This didn't impress nudist Ned, who in his presidential address told us that he believes any surplus finance in the farming sector would be better directed to building rotary showers.

Any fears that Ned wouldn't make it to the Gisborne end of his empire, were allayed when we came across his entourage outside Opotiki. After all who else would try walking his two thousand steers through the Waioeka Gorge over a weekend.

The hassle of getting to Gisborne for the first leg of the great event, was completely overshadowed by the warm welcome laid on by friends old and new. A pre-cabaret social evening at the club grounds was quite unexpected and naturally turned into a montage of recollections from past meetings.

The following day passed in a blur, as preparations progressed all over the town, Images now recalled, have John catching mussels from a boat that wouldn't stay still, and little boys with their fingers in the oysters. Of mountains of salad and tasty snacks of venison, of hard working club members and pre function nerves.

With the children safely ensconced in a local motel, it was time for the adults to enjoy a well earned leisurely meal at the local bistro before heading toward the 'do'.

With arrival timed to just after the official start, we knew that the table of our choice was guaranteed - after all, it works this way in the big smoke. Alas, we reckoned without the two hundred enthusiastic souls who were there to welcome the band.

The evening progressed with impeccable preparation hanging in to the end. The bar facilities coped admirably with the huge demand, and supper was cleverly handled in two sittings away from the dance floor so that the show could go on.

Despite their continual exertions, the band still outstayed most of the guests, who themselves carried on dancing to the early hours.

Later the same day, eastern branch Gisnaki members were again hospitably entertaining, this time at their well developed one acre headquarters on the edge of town. The only ones with energy left by this time were the children who spent their time up trees or burrowing into the footings of the new ablution block, now under construction.

The uneventful homeward trip was broken for lunch at Ohope Beach, where the improvements that Ken and Lois have made to their motor camp together with their infectious enthusiasm, convinced us to book up early for the next beach weekend in November.

A few weeks later it was time to leave for Egmont country, where Gisnaki's New Plymouth branch were to hold their third and as it turned out, most successful yet, cabaret evening.

About one hundred and fifty guests were on hand to welcome Mr & Mrs Fagg to the well run event. So efficient was the organisation that even the raffle prizes stayed at home.

The more subdued band was ideal for the occasion and it was well into the early hours before the hall began to empty, and the guests returned to their lodgings.

However, the relief of sleep was not to be. Determined to maintain their reputation as the first to greet the dawn, Gisborne branch members kept a vigil through what was left of the night. Supported by coffee and interrupted only by conjecture on the future of the nation's political parties, they made sure that no one took away their crown.

Socially speaking, the organisers did the decent thing and invited their guests to the highest point in Gisnaki territory, just to show there were no hard feelings. On a beautiful day, not too far below the snow line, and well fuelled with morning tea, it was a joy to survey the scene. Mr Fagg, with his striking good lady and impressive domain, is indeed a lucky man.

THE 'FREE BEACH GROUP' IS BORN

At a meeting in Auckland on August 9, a club was inaugurated which has no intention of ever having its own ground.

Three months ago a few naturists formed the opinion that there must be many more people keen on 'skinny dipping' and total sunbathing than are in the clubs, prevented from joining by such factors as time, finance, age or geography.

The need was for an organisation which, for a nominal fee, would let them know of all the possible nude-swimming sites in their area, would organise social activities and beach trips and would act as a focal point for all those outside the clubs trips and would act as a focal point for all those outside the clubs who wanted to 'stand up and be counted' on the controversy about free beaches. The meeting tried the effect of $10 worth of small advertising.

After six tiny ads, in the 'Herald' Social Services column, in the unsuitable naturist weather of june, more than a hundred enquiries had been received. Of these, sixty couples, families and single persons sent in application forms. More than half of whom have been interviewed and have joined. Very few spurious replies were received. Many letters arrived giving suggestions for suitable swimming spots, and these were co-ordinated and a list of 'Free' (very unofficially!) beaches sent out to members.

With the prospect of more favourable weather, the time had come to form a properly organised group. A constitution was drawn up and a committee formed from the 21 present (there were 18 apologies for absence, due to babies being born, weddings, house-moving etc.)

The group is now planning a real advertising campaign, and expects to multiply in size many times in the next year or so.

How will this affect the sun clubs? Only for the best: several of us are or have been sun club members. We envisage that many will join both types of organisation, as the Group subscription is only two dollars per unit per annum. Some will try out naturism under the auspices of the Group and will graduate to the Clubs. The young, single or unfinancial will be able to link up with a naturist organisation.

Among the activities envisaged, besides beach trips, are sauna evenings, chartered launch trips to offshore islands, social evenings (hopefully) at the homes of members with their own swimming pools, and camping trips (any suitable sites?).

So far only the Auckland area has been affected, with a few members in Hamilton and other towns in the Waikato. We hope that enthusiasts in other parts of the country will join and run local branches of the Group. Wouldn't it be nice, for example, to get a list of all the local naturist possibilities when one goes on holiday in another area?

Anyone interested is invited to write to the Secretary, John Miller, 7 Fowler Avenue, Mt. Albert, Auckland 3.

NORTH SHORE SUN CLUB

Great news!!

Although we were unable to see our way clear to finance the purchase of the property we had an option on, we are now in residence on that property. Thanks to our president who stepped into the breach. He took on the purchase option in his firm's name and has now leased it to the club until we can increase our membership. We wilt then be able to afford to take over the property from him.

We are indebted to Bert for this gesture, and it is now up to the members to make his effort worthwhile.

We have purchased a beach cottage and have had it removed to our grounds. With the help of members on working bees, it is now settled in position, and is being remodeled into a clubhouse. We are now working on the toilet and ablution block.

A large area of ti-tree has been cleared. As you read this, our sports grounds should be showing new grass. It is hoped to hold an Open Day at Labour Weekend. We also hope to be able to offer camping facilities for visitors to the Rally who would like to spend a day or two in the Orewa area.

NELSON SUN CLUB

A series of unhappy incidents happened over the past few weeks.

We are sad to say that one of our best known members has dies. Hazel was loved and respected by all who knew her. A paraplegic for many years, she was always cheerful and courageous. Whenever possible, Hazel joined into club activities, not allowing her disabilities to stand in the way.

Cyril and Hazel belonged to the Club before the purchase of our present grounds, and have supported us both financially and physically.

Our sincere condolences go to Cyril at his sad loss, which is our loss too.

On June 20th, our Works Manager had an unfortunate accident while working on the redesigning of our kitchen. Causing him to badly damage a finger on his left hand.

This is not the end of it yet.

Cyril, who as you read earlier has just lost his wife, was rushed to hospital with a severe heart attack. He was in intensive care for three days, but is now in Ward 10 and appears to be on the mend.

Well they say things come in threes, so here's hoping that's our lot, and our hopes go to Ron and Cyril to get well soon.

Alan tendered his resignation from the Committee at its last meeting. This was due to his transfer to Rotorua, concerning his work.

Hub Opden has been co-opted onto the Committee to fill the vacancy left by Alan.

Answer to last months joke: What's black and oozes between elephants toes? Slow natives.

NORTHERN SUN SEEKERS

To see this issue in print is appreciated, after the difficulty the magazine has been through.

The effort by those few to enable it, must make it seem worthwhile.

Our club has also had its difficulties over the past few months. An extraordinary general meeting was called, with the outcome that we now have a new Vice President, Treasurer and another committee member.

The Come Alive Festival was to say the least a great success as far as our club was concerned.

We had a lot of enquiries about our activities and about forty application forms were handed Out with pamphlets on introduction to social nudism.

The public showed obvious interest. So here's hoping we get replies.

The club had two offers of land for use as club grounds recently. The first was an offer of 10 acres on the farm of a club member.

Instead of the committee only viewing the land, an afternoon trip and barbeque was organised so that all members could give their opinions as to whether the grounds were suitable.

The day was dismal, but quite a few members made the effort which showed they were interested.

Opinions varied, however after a vote taken later, the offer was declined.

Another bush area was offered by a very enthusiastic farmer and members also visited these grounds. The setting was serene, with a waterfall which poured its waters into a clear stony-bottomed stream. The major problem was the inaccessibility to the grounds and these were also declined.

However both provided a good days outing and were well worthwhile.

Auckland Sun Club visited our grounds over Northland Anniversary weekend.

One of our members gave the services of his boat, which was certainly appreciated. Fun was had fishing and skin-diving.

The boat trip was out of the ordinary to the usual club activities which made it even more enjoyable.

On N.Z.Day a member couple invited the club out to their farm. The sun made the day and everyone just lazed and relaxed.

Luncheon was provided by the Mum's and discussion flowed from babies to the most controversial subjects.

To pack up and head home from the private setting with its beautiful gardens was an effort.

The A.O.H.C. Sports Day provided laughs and leisure. About twelve members with their families attended. Our attempts on the volleyball court resulted in us winning one game and losing three. However our losing margin was less than last years, so look out next year!

A questionnaire was sent out to our members to see what individuals would like to be provided at the club and any other suggestions they may have. So far we've only had a few replies. Perhaps the rest are happy with what we've got.

The winter activities have been organised and vary from a progressive dinner, car rally and a car evening, to wild wing ding parties.

However that's next issues news. So with Jack Frost creeping under the door and clad in clothes, we'll close on a cough .... and a sneeze.

Yours faithfully,

P.T.

BAY OF PLENTY CLUB

Our annual meeting has come and gone. It was pleasing to note the number of people prepared to stand for office. In fact, an election had to be held to fill all positions except the Secretary/Treasurer.

Our social at Rotorua was very successful in spite of the atrocious weather. Likewise, our monthly house parties have also been very enjoyable and successful. Visitors, both from other clubs and interested people, are very welcome at these house parties.

Our raid on Gisborne kr their cabaret was also very successful and enjoyable.

TARANAKI NATURISTS CLUB INC.

Clothed for the winter we may have been, but certainly not closed. Our club events have been many and varied. Two very interesting evenings were spent listening to a speaker from 'Lifeline' and watching a Health Dept. film entitled 'Sexuality and Communication'.

This film was of particular interest to married couples but also stressed the need for better communication between people at all levels of society.

While on this subject, if any club P.R.O.'s have not yet started giving talks to local clubs and organisations please do so. It is a lot of fun and you will find that most people are naturists at heart even if they haven't got around to joining a club.

With many weekends unsuitable for outdoor activities, our members have been concentrating on the inside of the club-house and new ablution block. This is not to say that work has been neglected outside on the grounds. More trees have been planted, fences erected and the sports area generally has been improved and made ready for the Summer.

The last mile of road to our grounds is to be tar sealed before Christmas which will be a big improvement and, we hope, encourage more visitors who will always be welcome.

Dennis Drake

P.R.O.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

For those of you who have not visited Mecca lately, you should, as the club house and out-buildings are painted and look most attractive.

As promised in the last issue of the Naturists, not only are the foundations down but the floor is poured and the walls of the ablution block are well on the way. With present progress the whole building will be functional for Xmas, this making living conditions much more convenient for the N.Y.C. visit here after New Year.

Our big event to date has been the cabaret which was once again, according to our visitors, a great success. With such able support from the following clubs: Canterbury, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, A.O.H.C., and Kowhai Valley it was bound to be an enjoyable evening.

Included in the group were numerous presidents and delegates, along with the National President, National Secretary, National PRO. and the Editor of this magazine.

At time of writing, negotiations are in progress for the procuring of a sizeable piece of ground adjoining one mile of attractive ocean beach a few minutes drive from the city. This will be for day visiting by our guests. If these negotiations are satisfactory, this land will be complementary to our present grounds. It will also mean we may have the first legal free beach in N.Z.

By the time you read this two car loads of us will have visited New Plymouth kr the 'Naki club's cabaret. This should turn out to be N.'.s second best cabaret but will let you know in the next edition.

A.O.H.C.

Members at A.O.H.C. have had a rather busy time during recent months particularly those attending to their various duties allocated to them on the Rally committee.

Preparations for this annual event of the association are going along smoothly and visitors arriving kr this occasion later in the year can be assured of a great time.

Our Annual General Meeting was held in May and a healthy state of affairs was reported. This was followed up by the annual ball held in a western districts night club.

This has been a regular feature in recent years and 140 members had a most enjoyable time wining and dining through to the early hours.

Swim nights and saunas have been organised again for this period of the year and an evening at one of the hot pools at Parakai which included a buffet supper was also well patronised considering increased charges.

Several working bees have been held which have resulted in the up-grading of our road into our grounds and a few other menial chores that came to our attention.

The new caravan area known as "Black Berry Valley" will soon be opened. What was once a wilderness has now been transformed into 24 sites. These have been developed and are in quite pretty surroundings.

International naturists have always been welcome at AOHC. Three visitors who called on us were Ted and Megan from "Zaribah Club" United Kingdom, making their second visit to New Zealand, Alex from the "Liverpool Sun Club" and Fritz and Erika from "Lindo" South Australia.

We hope you folk enjoyed your brief visit. Perhaps you might induce others to journey to our shores. Well, that's all for now, sun folk.

Will see you again in December.

Dave

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB

During the winter, work has continued at Lake Downs. Our new pool complex is now almost completed.

Filter/Canteen The building is now ready for the roofing iron and the wall sheathing. Concreting continues to progress so that the paths between the pools and the new filter/canteen building are now complete and two blocks have been poured behind the main pool. The rough edges around the pools have been machine removed. Our thanks to Ross. and Sue for arranging the delivery of 10 yards of concrete metal which is sufficient to complete all the concreting around the pools.

Recreation & Sport Subsidy A second application has been filed with the local County Council. The application is for a grant towards the pool complex. A letter was sent with the application stating the large number of members and visitors who use the pools.

Club Costs The estimated cost of running the Club for the coming season works out at $5.75 a day or 24c an hour.

Visitors Members from other approved Clubs may, by prior arrangement with the Secretary, stay at Lake Downs. Booking for accommodation is not possible but room can usually be found as our clubhouse sleeps 12. It is not necessary to use the inter-club forms as this makes a simple request complicated.

A friendly atmosphere prevails in the club and members from clubs travelling to the rally at Christmas are welcome to stay at our grounds.

After a pleasant day in the sun, you can enjoy food and drink in the club house or listen to our rare whistling frogs.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Nearly at the end of winter, and summer is on everyone's mind. We are really looking forward to the completion of the new swimming pool and surrounds and hope to have the opening ceremony some time in the New Year. Watch out for details and we'll have a competition about who's going to make the biggest splash.

Matamata proved as good as ever. The pools were only vacant at dead of night- by breakfast time they were already in use and so it went till the last 'old soak' crawled into bed. The hire of the private pool for Sunday afternoon meant that we could all get warmed up before the homeward trek.

Our trees are in the ground and fencing is in progress to protect them from the stock. We hope all members will speak encouragingly and loving words as they enter and leave - it certainly can't do any harm and just might help.

Well, Ohope weekend won't be long now - see you all there.

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB

With winter leaving and summer fast approaching we look forward to lazy days in the sun. This winter we have completed the groundwork for sports facilities and we bid a final goodbye to our temporary volley-ball court of past seasons. It will be wonderful to play on flat ground and not have to hop around the gorse and stumps on the field. Our court is close to our carpark, but we only hit the cars appointed for the day, the bigger the car the greater the risk.

This year the children have a Fire Engine that Santa bought last Xmas along with the other swings etc in their area so have plenty to amuse themselves with while Mum and Dad are catching the sun. Our clubhouse experienced a facelift this winter while the men were busy shifting the little shed the ladies painted and generally spruced up the place. The men cut a wide track down to where the shed is situated now. However the seating is still restricted to one at a time so while we can go down in convoy we can still only attack on an individual basis.

We held a successful Car Rally this year ending up at a members place in the country where we had an even more successful barbeque and a less successful game of Volley Ball against some firemen. We have held monthly swims at baths in the city and have been pleased to see members from other clubs arriving to swell the numbers. With spring around us, the grounds are blossoming out and have a lovely show of flowers this year, although the bush walk is still a bit slippery.

The pool is full and ready for summer, one brave man had a dip on the shortest day, but we all intend to take to the water when things warm up a bit more. Wishing you all fine weather and sunny days.

MASLINS BEACH
SOUTH AUSTRALIA

During my last visit of the season, one mid-week day, in April there were approximately 150 people on the beach (75% nude; 25% dressed). I spoke to several of the regular nudists and was told of their various attitudes and problems concerning the beach during its first season as a legal nudist beach.

The main problem, following the government proclamation of the establishment of the nude beach, was the rapid accumulation of rubbish which followed the initial influx of both nude and non-nude visitors.

This was soon overcome and kept in check purely by the efforts of Bob & Judy and Joe - with the help of the growing number of regular nudists.

During the weekdays, a four-wheel drive vehicle was stationed on the beach with rubbish bins attached to the front fenders. At weekends a trailer loaded with bins was used to distribute and collect the bins along the entire beach. I must say that at the time of my visit "Maslins" was one of the leanest beaches I have visited.

One regular user of the beach I spoke to, told me that she and several of the local families had been using the beach for nude bathing for many years. Her first recollection being of her visits with her parents as early as 1937. Her comment was that she would have preferred the beach to be used by nudists only. The vast column of sightseers, at weekends especially, did deter herself and many other nudists, but she predicted, this would be better next summer, since by the third month of use the regular nudist attendance had grown considerably.

There were complaints of various incidents of exhibitionism and these were considered to be no more than one would expect to see on any other beach.

Others told of the various interstate and overseas visitors they had met on the beach, many of them having their first nude experience outside their bathroom.

It was encouraging to see so many family groups of all ages. There are two ways of approaching the beach - one by following the coast road into the car park by the conventional area of the beach (only one small toilet block in the car park) then a short walk south passed the government signpost to the nude area of the beach. The other approach being from an inland track to the cliffs directly above the nude beach (bumpy, dry weather track only), limited parking, then a fairly easy descent ending in a few steps to the beach.

MasIins future? There has been local opposition unfortunately. More facilities in the way of toilets and car parking will obviously be required. Will commercialism move in? Let's see what next summer brings.

TINDO CLUB - SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Tindo celebrated its 14th birthday with a dance and social in the club house. An enormous birthday cake was baked and presented by one of our members.

Fourteen years may seem a long time but we still have the same growing pains experienced by far younger clubs. Now we have to update our water distribution system, most of which has been completed. We need a further improvement of the power supply to the camping area. Roadways have been stabilised with quarry rubble to cater for increased traffic. Further three planting is in progress together with the establishment of a shade house and plant nursery. Maintenance of the club house is in progress and the swimming pool pump house is to be rebuilt.

Several years ago Tindo instigated a Portfolio system on a trial basis in an attempt to distribute the burden of administrating a member owned club. This as you can imagine can be a very time consuming job for a few voluntary committee members. There are 26 portfolios including the six held by committee men and officers. Portfolios cover such things as swimming pool; canteen; children; buildings & site to social; water & sewerage; in fact 20 in all.

These are held by various members not necessarily committee members, who in turn have other members to assist where required. Overall, all Portfolio Holders are responsible to the committee. After our second annual meeting of Portfolio Holders, it would appear that the system is working, and there has been a definite easing of the work load on the Management Committee, together with added interest of a greater number of members in the interests of the club as a whole.

SUNLAND HOLIDAY VILLAGE

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Good news Council approval has been given for the development of a naturist holiday centre near Beachport in the south-east of South Australia. This will give naturists over 200 acres of natural bushland and sand dunes with almost a mile of secluded beach. It is anticipated that approval will be given to make the beach area 'legal'.

Work has begun in establishing a water supply and toilet facilities. Several enjoyable weekend camps have been held and visitors have helped to plant marram grass on the sand dunes.

Sunland is open to all naturist families (not only club members) for camping and caravanning. For further information send S.A.E. to P.O.Box 85, St Agnes, S.A. 5097 (metropolitan area of Adelaide).

DARWIN SUN CLUB INC.

Well you could have knocked me down with a feather (which wouldn't be hard to do). There's me, prepared to stand for Secretary, and ended up in the hot seat again. Which I can assure you all I shall again do my very best for the club. My main aim/course of pursuit during this term of office will be to take on the Darwin Reconstruction Commission, Town Planning, and any other department to obtain a lease of land for the club, an enormous and difficult task under the present conditions. The Cyclone and the Free Area Campaign drained the club of it's spark, now is the time to recharge it's batteries, and go.

Roger,
President.

NATURI

Like many areas around Sydney, we have suffered large increases in land rates, but, so far, we have managed to maintain our club fees at the same level as last year. Members will see in their latest newsletter just how much it cost to run the club and will surely wonder why we have not had to increase our fees. The amount paid by members is small when we think just what we have in the way of facilities. A new lawn locker has been installed and members were busy clearing the site and laying the concrete base. Many thanks, fellas. The permanent caravans have all been cleaned up and painted, and that area is looking quite smart.

The club roads have been improved and more concrete drains laid across them to prevent water erosion. A new filter and pump has been installed for our pool, and the water is now more clear and sparkling than ever. The main pool and children's pool is being enclosed with a chain wire fence with self locking gates. This is a safety precaution against any unattended children getting in the pools, and possibly coming to harm.

HERITAGE

Last year one of our newer members, Karl (Maria) suggested he would make a pump to raise water from the river to the upper car-park. It is quite obvious after seeing the end result of his labour that many hours were spent building the pump and paddle-wheel. The unit was tested on the weekend of the 26th and 27th April and water was pumped to the lower car-park on that Sunday. The line to the top was made up by connecting numerous lengths of rubber and plastic garden hoses. Our next move is to install a permanent line so we can all reap the benefit of Karl's efforts.

When a young nudist couple were asked by an observer why the littleness of their ambition? Why didn't they choose something more suitable to their dignity and position in society. They answered that:- We find it sufficient to our way of life, and respect another's point of view and if our attitude is accepted as narrow and of little ambition then we are quite content to share it with our real friends ...
