Editorial

The 1957 National Rally directed that the editor should obtain a suitable cover for the National Review. At long last the winter issue was published with a cover which we hope will please all our readers.

The design was drawn by a member of the Wellington Sun & Health Society, a commercial artist, who after suffering suggestions and criticism, has produced a clever symbolic representation of naturist activities. The typical New Zealand landscape surveyed by a naturist family seemed most appropriate for our publication. The national organisation is most grateful to Bob for this fine production.

A NEW TITLE.

Manufacturing a block for the cover meant that a final decision had to be made as to the name of the publication. "National Review" has not been sufficiently descriptive of nudist news and topics, and hence, after obtaining many opinions, the magazine will in future be called The "National Naturist Review".

An attractive cover must be supported by attractive and interesting articles. The publication needs writers and contributors, and readers are therefore asked to participate by sending in news snippets, letters or articles of interest to Naturists and so lend variety and improve the journal still further.

Our publication is looking better inside as well as out. Annette, Bob's wife, is typing our stencils and the improvement is terrific - seein' is believin'. In addition Bob's small illustrations are brightening the pages and his advice in layout is making quite a beneficial difference, even if driving his wife to distraction.

The Editor is truly grateful for the help Bob and Annette are giving him. Many, many thanks to you both.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Congratulations on the new Review. Now that the Australian magazines seem to have "had it", we need a N.Z.magazine even more. The following paragraphs are comment on your editorial.

While I am in agreement with the general thesis of your editorial, and definition contained therein, "Naturism is a form of relaxation which improves physical and mental health", am sure that very many naturists would disagree with the severely qualifying phrase "and nothing more". To many people, I think, naturism is also an expression of disbelief in the modern system of values, which largely by means of high pressure advertising, is concerned only in vaunting the artificial and unnatural in every aspect of life, in our eating habits, in the way we spend our leisure and recreation time, in our artistic appreciation, or lack of it, indeed in every part of our way of life.

Many people understand that the more artificial our way of life and our aims in life become, the less happy we become and in order to escape the vicious circle of trying to relieve a week's accumulation of tensions and inhibitions acquired in our necessary employment by submersing ourselves in the weekend mill of artificial "relaxation" and forced "pleasure", it is necessary to return to an appreciation of nature and enjoyment of simple things, best achieved by the help of the practice of nudism, and meeting congenial companions at the club in the atmosphere of nature's healers, sunshine and fresh air.

Yours sincerely,

Jerry.

Sir!

May I express my amazement at I.E.'s reply to my letter (which you published in Review No.9) in which I drew attention to the dangers of nudity on public beaches. Your correspondent, of course, is entitled to his point of view, and had he confined his remarks to a thoughtful debate on the ethics of the practice, he may have contributed some worthwhile observations. But that "I.E." should advocate open defiance of the law for the purpose of some wild scheme to educate the authorities fills me with the greatest concern. I can only hope that said authorities fail to read his letter, or, if they do read it, recognise that THE NATIONAL REVIEW is not responsible for his opinions.

For my part, I am doubtful whether "I.E." will see open nudity on our beaches during his lifetime, but, whether or not, I think he would be well advised to carry his torch with his pants on!

One wonders whether "I.E." uses the same method of protest when his own beliefs are at variance with other points of the law. Does he, for instance, roar the highways at 8O to express his disapproval of our speed limits?

Your correspondent can take it from me that I am neither smug nor complacent, nor do I lack courage. I made a specific point - or maybe two - and on both, your correspondent saw fit to misrepresent me. If he will re-read my letter he will see that rather than expressing lack of thought for people less fortunate than ourselves, my comments were directed towards the thoughtless few who jeopardise the good name of the movement when they do HAVE CLUB AMENITIES AVAILABLE. Second1y, your correspondent did me the dis-service of using my phrase "Exhibitionism and bravado" completely out of its context, and here again I can only suggest that he should have read twice before replying.

My original letter was written in an effort to be constructive and to help consolidate the fine foundation on which our movement has been built and I can see nothing praiseworthy in "I.E.'s" reply.

Having cleared up those few points I do not intend to pursue the matter any further but would read with interest the opinions of others on this very important subject.

Yours etc.

J.S.

Christmas Presents

Most of us wish to remember our friends at this time of the year. We wish them health and happiness and pick out attractive cards to express these desires appropriately. By being members of the nudist movement we have been helped considerably towards health and happiness and what more fitting means and practical opportunity than to send a free subscription for our National Naturist Review.

This, might be all that those friends of yours, who have been nibbling for so long, might need. Just send the 5/- together with the name and address of those friends you wish to help and we will do the rest.

Nudist Magazines

Most readers are familiar with the agreement that we came to with the Government with reference to the importation and sale of our magazines within N.Z. However, more recent enquiries suggest that a reminder is necessary and as it is important that all bona fide members of the N.Z. movement comply strictly, no apology is made for this reminder. Briefly:-

1). Health and Efficiency, Sunbathing Review, The Naturist, and Sun Review may be sold over the counter without restrictions, with the exception that they must not be blatantly displayed or sold to adolescents.

2). For the purpose of stocking their libraries, clubs may import 3 copies of each issue of a selected list of American and Continental magazines.

3). Members of foreign origin may import magazines of their own country, but in order that they may pass the Customs, it is essential that they notify this office in the first instance.

IF YOUR BOOKSELLER TELLS YOU THAT OUR MAGAZINES ARE BANNED, YOU NOW HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO TELL HIM THAT THIS IS NOT SO.

Nudist Movies

Following a recent enquiry from a stranger for the loan of some of our movie films, some clarification is indicated. This matter has also been a subject for discussion with the Justice and Customs Depts., and the manager of Kodak, and the taking or showing of films of our activities is permissible within N.Z. but it must be understood that the films are entirely the property of either the N.Z.S.A. or one of its member clubs and must be used expressly for the use of the Association's members. Outside of this it becomes a violation of our agreement.

The 7th National Rally

27th-28th-29th December, 1958. at the grounds of the Wellington Sun & Health Society (Inc.)

Arrangements are well in hand by the host club and while cooperation from all concerned is assured, the weatherman may not be so sympathetic. We just hope for the best. A tentative programme, that will be large1y dependent on the weather is-

27th. Sat.:- Registering. Getting acquainted and settling in. N.Z.S.A. meeting of delegates chaired by Rosa (Wellington President). Games. Evening entertainment in hall ½ mile distant.

28th. Sun.:- Short undenominational service. General meeting chaired by Rosa. Fun for the children. Discussion session chaired by Gerald (A.O.H.C.) Film evening in the hail.

29th. Mon.:- Children's game. Tenikoit championships. Conclusion.

Hot water will be available all day and a well stocked canteen will save a lot of camping worries. Milk and eggs will be available. Every effort will be made to assist those requiring transport - but where it is found difficult to oblige, appropriate train and bus information will be supplied. Should anyone want to hire stretchers, lilos or any other gear, they are asked to notify Doug Cousins, Rally Organiser, at once. Limited accommodation is available in the club house and an open fire is the only means of cooking at the moment, though it is hoped to have the power on in time.

REMITS.

On the business side, the N.Z.S.A. executive will discuss the following remits end their findings will be presented to a general meeting for ratification. It will be noted that all are methods of further improving and consolidating our position, largely as a result of experience... our best teacher.

A.O.H.C, "That consideration be given by officers and delegates to ways in which the N.Z. Sunbathing Association can be further developed in the light of experience gained in the past year.

W.S.& H.S. "That the ground fee for future National Rallies be 3/6 per adult per day for the period of the Rally.

"That consideration be given to the idea of fixing a standardised charge for visitors attending any club in N.Z."

NAT. ORGANISER. "That the capitation fee of 1/- per adult town member paid by the clubs to support the National Office be levied as at the 1st. of February of each year."

DISCUSSION SESSIONS

The main purpose of National Rallies is to get together as one happy family and in view of the apparent discord elsewhere, we all need to exert every effort towards this desirable end. The pattern of the organisation of these Rallies changes from year to year as new ideas replace those not so succesful. Several new innovations have been introduced and are now accepted policy. Emanating from Gerald, this year we are trying a session where we can all pool our experience in the common effort to help one another. Clubs were invited to offer suggestions for suitable subjects and the following have been received to date. There are many others but time will be our only limit.

K.S.C. "Methods of interviewing applicants, especially young ladies."

"The value or advisability of a group for men only within a club. Procedure for admitting applicants under 21 years of age."

C.S.& H.C. "Transport to club grounds."

PHOTOGRAPHY.

The system employed last year at Christchurch, where the number of photographers was kept to a minimum, worked the smoothest of any to date, only one red tag being issued. It is suggested that this procedure be adopted, namely that no more than two photographers be appointed by the National Office to take all photographs (black and white stills) from which publication photos will be selected and that for the sake of the pictorial record, clubs be permitted to appoint their own movie, colour slide or stereo photographer.

IDENTIFICATION TAGS.

In order to further improve this scheme it is proposed for this Rally that all local members wear square tags instead of the usual round ones. Visitors will know more readily from whom they make enquiries. Colours vill be:-

Grey:--Executive. Red:--Those not wishing to be photographed.

Blue:--Photographers. White:--Everybody else.

TENIKOIT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Wanganui has won the trophy three years running. Will all visiting members get in some practice and send forward a first class team.

ENTERTAINMENT.

With the help of two members from Kaurimu, the local club's concert party is preparing to put on one of its now famous shows. Talent scouts will be admitted.

Ken, our delegate who represented us at the 6th International Congress at Woburn in August, will tell us all about his experiences.

Pulling your weight"

"PULLING YOUR WEIGHT" OR "HORSES - WILLING OR OTHERWISE."

Letters reaching this office, articles in our magazines, club newsletters all include one complaint from time to time. It has been a fai1ing in the past and while human nature is what it is, it will be with us to the end, in a greater or lesser degree. We refer to the problem of every member pulling his/her weight with the chores around the grounds, administration and the numerous things necessary to the successful running of a club. It is sometimes heard on a sunny day "I get enough work during the week. Why should I work out here?"

Well, up to a point, fair enough, but surely we realise that a members' club is financed by the members, is maintained by the members and its success or failure is entirely the members' responsibility. Letters have to be written, accounts paid, the grass cut, the club house swept out, etc. etc. etc. If you don't do your share, then someone else is carrying you. It does not take much effort when we all pitch in and simply do our share and it is a happy club that enjoys a degree of this state of affairs. Clubs everywhere are surely grateful to the band of loyal workers who make their existence possible, and whose cheerful acceptance of their responsibilities are an example to us a11.

Outside NZ

Most club members will recall with pleasure the visit of Mary from England. She has been touring around for the last year or two and, now, on her departure for home, wishes to be remembered to the many friends she made while in N.Z. Thank you, Mary, and we enjoyed having you among us and wish you every success wherever you may be.

WOODLANDS N.S.W.

After many years association with this Australian club, Frank Thomas is handing over the reins to Adrian and Wihemina, a charming and capable Dutch couple who commence operations on the 19th December. Our best wishes go to them.

HEALTH NOTES.

The amount of salt normally taken should be increased substantially in hot weather since a great deal of it is lost by perspiration. Unless this is replaced it may lead to tiredness, loss of appetite sleeplessness, headache and a general feeling of being run down.

More salt can be eaten with meals or salt tablets can be dissolved in drinking water. These are not unpleasant in flavour and can be purchased from chemists.

Impressions of nudism in Australia

There's one thing about this Mediterranean climate in S.A. - one is sure of plenty of sunlight during the summer months;yet one still sees plenty of pasty faced types around. The only ones who seem to go out in the sun regularly are the 16 - 23 age group, and especially the wealthier "Younger set", who go surfing at Victor Harbour, 50 miles south of here. Adelaide people being a highly motorised lot, all the coastal reaches are occupied, particularly on Sundays, and it makes me mad to see delightful little spots desecrated by "peasants" who quite often either don't even take their shirts off, or else retire under their little tent shelters. Sometimes one sees "daring" two piece swim suits, but generally they are a pretty drably dressed mob.

When it became apparent that any organised trips by the local tramping club would fizzle out, I started making enquiries about visiting the Melbourne clubs during the Xmas - New Year break, and eventually ended up spending a very pleasant couple of days at Sunray.

Sunray extended me a most sincere welcome, and I ended up parking my van in the grounds, and spending three days there. I guess you will have had most of the details of it via Doug Cousins, so I'll merely add that Jim and Rita are a most sincere and hospitable pair, and, although the grounds aren't the roomiest, they do their best to make everyone welcome. There were some 20 or so there, including quite a few country members, and I gather that most ordinary sunny weekends there are some 40-50 there.

The New Year's Eve party was a most hilarious affair, with quite a few of the neighbours also present. I understand that such social events are one of the strong features of the club. I gathered from Rita that the Perth club had folded up, and that she had been unable to contact any of the supposed Adelaide clubs. From a visiting Woodlands member, I learned that Ron Ashworth's Southern Country Club still functions in Sydney. Generally, despite what Solar and Sun Review might pretend in their lists, the picture is one of Woodlands and Sunray as the only two big clubs, and a number of semiprivate groups which keep to themselves - quite a contrast to the N.Z. picture!

From Melbourne I returned around the coastline, via the scenic Great Ocean Road, which has a 25 mph speed limit for some 40 miles of its lenth! One couldn't go any faster around most of the bends anyway. One day I spent exploring a really beautiful stretch of coastline down in the S.E. of S.A., where beaches and sand dunes extended for miles.

Perhaps it was as well the lack of company induced me not to stay longer, as I had run out of u-v filter cream anyway, and the combination of strong sun and a cool sea breeze had quite a punch!

Cheerio to all,
Lindsay C.

Kaurimu Sun Club Inc. (Members.) Box 15, Glen Eden Auckland.

Auckland Sun Club. (Proprietory.) Box 2925, Auckland.

The old club is still battling along. I have been in touch with all members in the last couple of weeks. The grounds are in pretty good order for the coming season and I hope that we may be to add to our membership at a faster rate this year. I received our first application for membership from a couple last week. We have added to our area by clearing a piece of ground about the same size as our present playing area and the grass is coming through very well; it should be quite well established by the time the really hot weather starts(?). Also on the programme for this season is the installation of city water supply. (I am sure that if the wealthy Wellington club cared to make us a donation of £200, we would have a very nice little swimming pool as well.)

Waikato Sun Club. (Members.) Box 32, Hamilton East.

Constant searching for suitable grounds has not disheartened the "Mooloo Sun-Bashers" as the members call themselves. Membership enquiries are still coming from a few and there seems to be every indication that the club will make real headway once the elusive property is found.

Gisborne Sun Club. (Members.) c/- Box 6359, Wellington.

Wanganui Sun Club. (Members.) Box 410, Wanganui.

Wel1ington Sun and Health Society Inc. (Members.) Box 6359, Wellington.

The members are working very hard preparing for the Rally. The Clubhouse has made great progress - now that the wash area is completed, lining well underway the tanks and spouting up and the electric power to be connected any day. The trees are growing well even if the weather is rather dry. The Annual General Meeting resulted in some changes on the Executive. Rosa is the President (I think she is the first woman president in N.Z.) Doug is Secretary/Treasurer, Perc. Public Relations Officer, and Keith and Rosalie committee members. Jim is the Auditor, and Dexter is the National Rally Delegate. Subscriptions remained the same, but the ratio of men to lady members was abolished for the current year. Six new applicants are under consideration for membership, so there is still every indication that the club is thriving.
