THE NZNF SUPPLEMENT OCT/NOV 1991

QUOTE OF THE YEAR

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE SECRET OF SUCCESS IS BUT THE SECRET OF FAILURE IS TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYBODY ALL THE TIME."

Our North Island Vice President is responsible for this little gem during his attendance as one of the quest speakers at the South Island Seminar held on the grounds of the Orchard Sun Club recently. The other guest speaker was Kevin Sampson, our National P.R.O., and the weekend ran smoothly with Kay Sneddon, the host Club President, acting as co-ordinator - in all 26 nudists attended. The theme was 'NUDISTS - ARE WE WHAT WE THINK WE ARE?' - the following is what resulted from the discussions.

We are social and sociable and people join us for a lot of different reasons and stay for reasons that are not always the same as what they were when we first joined. NUDISTS ARE STRONG MINDED PEOPLE. We are nudists/naturists - not clothes optional. We may or may not be "Sun" Clubs.

Use the THREE C'S INSTEAD OF RULES - COURTESY, COMMON SENSE AND CONSIDERATION We are over regulated.

MEMBERSHIP - Fee structure - Sing1e rather than family units.

People are important - communication - information. If we want members we SHOULD NOT BE FRIGHTENED TO TELL OTHERS THAT WE BELONG TO A NUDIST CLUB. Word of mouth is a very important CHEAP way of advertising.

Hire an UP-MARKET room for an evening - advertise that there will be a video evening on Nudism and your own individual club in particular. Take videos of your own grounds, get copies of good quality videos on Nudism and market yourselves.

COMMUNICATION - inside and outside your Club.

Offer a good atmosphere/good feelings, which will encourage new members and keep existing ones.

In Norman's closing speech he suggested half fees for new members for the first year of membership, include as many members as possible in the decision making process, go out to the public and show them what being a nudist means, do away with probationary.

thanks to Philippa Hornell.

A.O.H.C RALLY.

HOW TO KILL A CLUB

The following is a guide on how to kill a club. Do any of you recognise the signs?

DECLINE all offices and committee appointments - you're too busy. Then offer vociferous advice on how they should do things.

DON'T WORK - it's a courtesy appointment. Then complain because the club has stagnated.

DON'T INITIATE new ideas - that requires thinking. Then play the devil's advocate to those submitted by others.

DON'T PARTICIPATE beyond paying your dues - let 'them' handle things. Then complain that members have no choice in management.

DON'T RUSH IN to pay your dues - they're too high anyway. Then complain about poor financial management.

DON'T ENCOURAGE others to become members - that's selling. Then complain that membership is not growing.

DON'T READ newsletters or notices - they're not important. Then complain that you're never kept informed.

DON'T VOLUNTEER your talents - that's ego fulfillment. Then complain that you're never asked.and never appreciated.

AND IF by chance the club grows in spite of your 'contribution', grasp every opportunity to tell the youngsters how tough it was and how hard you worked in the old days to bring the club to it's present level of success.

Borrowed from the R.S.A. Review with appreciation.

YOUR EXECUTIVE

NORMAN WILKINSON (I think commonly known as 'Our Norm' - apologies if I am wrong!) THE N.Z.N.F. SOUTH ISLAND VICE PRESIDENT. Norman and his family joined Woodlands, Sydney in 1970 and moved to Christchurch and joined the Canterbury Sun Club in 1973 and has been there ever since. He became vice president and then progressed to the position of President, which he held for two years. He maintains that any interest in Soccer or League is purely the result of Roy Cox, (the previous Editor of 'In Touch') and his influence!! Norman feels that the changes in the movement have been made are due to us seeking to acclimatise to the 'modern' world and we have lost our identity as nudists. He would like to see us all regain our identity and become accepted as a normal part of life for the majority of New Zealander's.

Norman's family have achieved great success at Rallies and his children learned to swim at an early age, his two sons becoming excellent players on the volley ball scene. We cannot end without mentioning Beryl, the lady in this partnership, who is very quiet but is still very active in the sports arena in the movement and an excellent miniten player. Norman seems not to say very much but when he does look out (see the quote of the year), I am quite sure that there are many more from that area in the future.

STAN GARTNER Dare I say 'the newey' on the Executive - THE N.Z.N.F. NORTH ISLAND VICE PRESIDENT. Stan has been in the movement for the past 21 years and held various position on the committee of his home club, Waikato Outdoor Society, for the past 19 years, attaining the positions of vice president and president. He has slowly worked his way up to the position he now holds in the N.Z.N.F., and is quiet happy to stay there until he feels he has the confidence and ability to go to higher things.

P3

Stan is a great believer in open mindedness to the public and one of his main goals is to see a National Rally held at the Waikato Club. With his wife, Barbara by his side he is now learning the ways of the executive and perhaps in time looking towards higher things. Good luck to you both.

JACK CARR Having been the N.Z.N.F. SECRETARY for the past 15 years I think I can safely say Jack knows what he is doing in his position, the 15 years including being secretary for his Club, Wellington Sun Club. Jack joined the movement in 1961 and was given a life membership of Wellington 6 years ago. For the future he would like to see more open mindedness from the club and members; one way he feels would be us all using surnames. He is concerned at the drop of membership in clubs and feels that the increased fees have a bearing on this. At the time of writing Jack is in hospital in Wellington and I am sure all members join me in wishing him all the best.

DID YOU KNOW?

A CASE FOR A LITTLE SUN - U.S.

CANCER RESEARCH

Women in some parts of the world may face a greater risk of breast cancer because of a lack of sunlight, according to new research from the United States. The study suggests that women in America's northern cities, where tall buildings block out poor winter sunlight, may not be exposed to it long enough for their bodies to synthesise vitamin D, which is now thought by some doctors to help prevent some cancers. The study, published in the U.S. journal Preventive Medicine, states: in America the national death rate for breast cancer is 27.3 for every 1000,000 women. In New York, the rate is 33, but in San Antonio, Texas, which receives one-third more solar radiation than New York, the rate is only 22. Although the researchers stress that the findings are preliminary and that many other factors have to be considered in determining the causes of breast cancer, they have found a correlation between the cities with the lowest levels of light and the highest rates of death from breast cancer in the 87 regions they studied. The body gains vitamin D in two ways: the skin reacts to ultraviolet radiation from the sun to manufacture it; or it can be obtained from foods such as fortified milk, oily fish or cod liver oil. Indications that it may be a factor in prevent the development of breast cancer come from research which how the introduction of vitamin D to breast cancer cells in the laboratory inhibited their growth. In other laboratory tests, rats given vitamin D rich diet had half the incidence of colon tumour of those receiving no supplements of the vitamin. If people do not eat enough vitamin D rich food, the researchers argue, then the amount of sunlight exposure may make a difference. Medical experts say about 10 to 20 minutes of moderate sunshine on the body is enough to synthesise the desired intake of vitamin D, which is 400 international units or 10 micrograms a day. But many cancer specialists say that although the link between sunlight and rates of breast cancer is an interesting one, there has to be a great deal more research before cause and effect is proved.

THE CLUB, BY SUNSHINE SPARROW

What is 'The Club'? Is it these buildings or these grounds? This swimming pool perhaps, or the miniten courts? No! The Club is the members. A group of people joining together to enjoy a common relaxation, sunbathing, playing swimming without clothes. All members of 'The Club' enjoy these activities which is the reason they have joined. However, the buildings and grounds have to be maintained, and full support from all members of 'The Club' would lessen the load on a few enthusiasts. It is good to have enthusiasm but eventually it wears out and sooner or later another member resigns and is lost to 'The Club'. In these days of falling memberships clubs can ill afford to lose enthusiastic people. Let's all pull our weight with the maintenance of the property. I'm sure you will have loads of fun as well. Get to know your fellow members better and by your actions you may help to keep Tom, Dick or Harry in 'The Club'. There's Saucy Sparrow over there in that other tree. I'll just pop over and say 'Hello'.

With 'luck' Sunshine sparrow will appear in this publication on a regular basis with more words or wisdom.

The Editor apologies for the lateness of this edition - but would appreciate your comments of this 'new edition'. Do you like it, don't you like it or do you want something different? All reasonable suggestions accepted!!!
