To those members who believed the weather office and thought it would rain all Easter, we had a few showers at night and an occasional sprinkle on two days. Most of the rest of the time the sun was shining. The sea was very calm. The fishing was the best we have had.

Wellington NEWS

July - August, 1993

You don't know what you've got, 'till it's gone."

So sang Joani Mitchell. This is a statement that I am having no problem relating to. Having just discovered the Free Beach Group, I now have the misfortune of leaving New Zealand.

But this statement is two edged.

Although I have been an active naturist for more than thirty years, it took almost four years to become active with the FBG. I spent some good days "trekking" the beaches of Wellington looking for Fred Bear, but I admit that the "sun" often got the better of me and I would end up lying down on the job.

This year my pursuit of Fred was relentless. My wife was away, concerned about keeping herself warm in the chill of Canada. And I was faced with the prospect of facing a Kapiti "summer" alone, on the vast stretches of Peka Peka beach.

So, I joined the, Free Beach Group. Yes I sent out a letter, paid my dues and tore off down to the beach. As luck would have it, there was Neil, his Fred Bear shirt hung on a stick, and his usual warm welcome. The rest, as they say is history.

Now I shall shortly be returning to Canada, to pursue my wife. The beach will be gone, but the memories will certainly be still there. Memories like, playing cricket on the beach, the walks and swims. The memories of "swim nights" and a swim party at the house. The memories of a kind group with a common set of interests in the promotion of a clothing-optional society.

In Canada there is no Free Beach, and the attitudes there are like those of the Americans, that "naturists" should be kept in the closet or fenced into clubs. There are few, if any, ideas of "swim nights", barbies or other types of nudist get-togethers.

You are lucky for what you have. Don't become apathetic. Don't lose it.

You have a wonderful concept in New Zealand: that nudity on the beach is legal. The FBG "rules" of promoting an attitude of safe and moral conduct on the beach is characteristic of a caring society. But be leery. There is an active group of "moralists" who equate nudity to sex, and sex to violence, and therefore believe the naturist must be violently over-sexed perverts who must be stamped out. "Down with nude beaches; up with the 'long-john' bathing costumes".

Be "pro-active", support the Oz fight to save their beaches. For as theirs go, so will yours.

Be "pro-active", advertise the quality of life, the morality of the FBG, the friendliness, the safety of being a FBG member.

Be "pro-active", advertise beach days, swim nights, and other get-togethers, etc.

Be "pro-active", show the public how warm and friendly "Freddie Bear" is.

As I head back to a warm Canadian summer, my search will start all over to find a beach. Then I shall start a Free Beach Group too.

Traven Searle

Thank you, Traven, for your contribution to the Wellington scene, we have enjoyed your company, and wish you well on your return to Canada to be with Janet.

Social Fund

At a recent committee meeting, it was decided to invite active Wellington members to donate $5 (per membership unit) towards our social fund. The fund is required to ensure that we have enough money available to pay for events (eg swim nights) without relying on any one individual having to use their own money. Local events are not supported by the subscriptions we pay to Auckland.

SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO JULY - AUGUST NEWSLETTER

Unapproved omissions, additions and alterations were made to the last newsletter between Committee approval and printing. We wish to rectify this and provide new information which has just cane to hand.

AGM WAIWERA SWIM NIGHT

Yes it is ON after the AGM. See page 3 of your newsletter. (It should have been page 1.)

PARAKAI

From July it will be held at Palm Springs Hot Pools (on left before the church, not after). Time will be from 6 p.m. till midnight. Greatly improved facilities (diving pool, swim pool and 3 spa pools, barbecue etc). The cost will be a little more - $8 for adults, $2 for children. Another plus is a takeaway and full meal facilities on site. Dates are July 31st & August 28th.

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS AND SUN CLUBS

Members of the Free Beach Group will be aware from reports in the press, and from an earlier newsletter, that a ring of paedophiles has been found to have been operating in the Wellington region and has been the subject of a police Investigation. Members will share the concern of the Auckland Committee that two members of this ring have been shown to have an association with our Club. BE ASSURED THAT THIS ASSOCIATION NO LONGER CONTINUES. The two people involved have been arrested and we understand will face charges.

The dispersed nature of our membership and the consequent difficulty in maintaining a close control of the Free Beach Group members makes us very vulnerable to infiltration by such undesirable characters. The Committee therefore wishes to impress on all members to be alert to any signs of undesirable behaviour within the Free Beach Group.

Where any member is troubled by observing such behaviour, he or she should make this known to the Auckland Committee as soon as possible. Such information will of course be treated as completely confidential. Each of us in the Free Beach Group is responsible for helping to maintain the good name of the club and of the nudist movement throughout the country.

DEADLINE FOR THE NEXT NEWSLETTER IS AUGUST 23. We need to receive copy in Auckland by this date and remember all copy goes to our Auckland box number.

FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE CANADIAN FREE BEACH SCENE

Bernard Hollibar, one of our Auckland Committee members, and his wife Ngaire, recently paid a visit to Wreck Beach near Vancouver. He reports that this beach is about 10 miles long and he has seen about 5-6000 nudists on it. While there he heard rumours of a free beach on the St. Lawrence river in Quebec. There are 6 different trails to Wreck Beach and Bernard and Ngaire thoroughly enjoyed their time there.
