MAY   JUNE   1993

Summer has been and gone. Here in, Auckland It has been pretty &y since Xmas and we haven’t had a lot of sun. It was a matter of making the most of it.

We understand Fernlands will be on again this year in Tauranga on 22 May. Ring president for details.

A.G.M. We still need a secretary. It is unfair to expect the club to go on without one. It will be essential to elect one at the next A.G.M. We will also need some new committee members as well. Some of the present committee members need a break. The newsletter will also need a writer.

During the last two or three years there has been in increase in membership in some regions. These areas are deciding how to organise themselves. This wi1l need to be discussed at the A.G.M. with a view to setting policy and funding requirements.

NORTH SHORE UPDATE

NUDITY UPSETS COUNCIL The bathing nuisance along the beach at the North Shore is once again becoming apparent. At the meeting of the Devonport Council last night, several of the members spoke very strongly of the disgraceful behaviour some of the bathers. At five o'clock last evening, several young men bathed in full view of the passers by, in a perfectly nude condition. If complaints continue, bathing will probably be completely prohibited, thus inflicting a grievance on innocent persons through no fault of their own.

- NZ Herald Feb 1893.

The only report about the by-law has been a nonsense. We understand a group of nudists were approached and told to dress because there is a new by-law. Fair enough; except it was on Long Bay; below MHWS mark; the inspector was not a NSCC inspector, i.e., outside NSCC area by an inspector not employed by NSCC but quoting end using NSCC by-laws. We need more information on this to follow it up. One council cannot use another council's by-laws unless there is an agreement we don't know about.

No one has told us that signs quoting the by-law have been put up by the NSCC at the beaches we use. We understand they have been bodily removed (concrete base end all) or destroyed by people who object to signs. We want to know if the signs are accurate as to where the by-law applies.

SOMEONE MUST HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TELL US ABOUT THIS BEFORE NOW!

A letter from the present mayor dated 29 Oct 92 - "It would be more appropriate to signpost a beach where nudity was permitted as opposed to the view that we should signpost all beaches to say that nudity is not allowed."This was the answer to our question on putting signs on beaches and here they are, putting signs on beaches where nudity is not permitted!

Meeting Report

The special Wellington Meeting held at St-Andrews-on-the-Terrace on Friday 26 March, was attended by 25 members.

The convenor of the meeting greeted members and gave a brief outline of the purpose of the meeting, and called for nominations for a meeting chair and secretary. Ross and Trevor were nominated and elected for these respective positions.

Next, a committee was elected, comprising Grant, Ross, Trevor, Linda, and Brian. The task of the committee will be to facilitate the activities of the Wellington group, to be responsible for the management of our social fund and events which involve a financial commitment.

The meeting proposed that a donation of $5 be sought from active members to establish a social fund. A hat was passed around the members present, and this raised enough to pay for the hire of the hail with $11 left over to go into the social fund.

Bill will continue to be our local contact for members, and the coordinator of the Newsletter. John will continue to be editor of the Wellington page.

At it's first meeting, the committee decided to set a charge of $3 per adult for the swim nights, Rangi Woods camp was scheduled for Wellington Anniversary weekend, and Grant was appointed to be the contact for new members.

Winter Activities

Our Winter activities began with the first Swim Night at the Cannons Creek Aquatic centre, Porirua on Sunday 4 April, with no less than 33 members present. The Wellington Free Beach Group is funding the swim nights this year so we hope that they will continue to be well supported. Future Swim Nights will be on the second Sunday of each month, starting at 6pm. Remember to bring sausages for the barbecue.

Sauna Nights begin at the Atlantis Sauna, 157 Karori Rd, Karori, on Friday 23 April, and thereafter on the fourth Friday of each month. $6-50 per adult, children free. Wally says that you are welcome other Fridays.

Fred Bear

...... from the beginning

Dear John

It was interesting to see the query in the (March-April) newsletter concerning the origins of Fred Bear.

As the founding chairman, I can give a complete answer. When I was quite young, I purchased a small Adana printing press. This would only print up to about 6" x 4", but used standard lead type. The Adana catalogue included many small illustration blocks priced from about is 6d upwards. Three of these caught my eye, and I bought them, being old our friend Fred in three poses: running, laughing, and welcoming. The laughing version became known in our family as "creasing bear" (creasing himself with laughter).

I used the "welcoming" bear as the logo for my tiny hobby press: the Fred Bear Press. Yes, it was the old joke(?), which must be repeated for clarity:

There were once three bears.

Baby bear had no hair,

so they called him Fred Bear.

When the FBG was started, we needed a logo, and I immediately thought of Fred. The initials were right (Fred Bear's Gang) and he looks very friendly! I made a photo negative from the picture in the catalogue, and projected it on a piece of paper, then drew round it: the foundation of the sticker we use.

But of course Fred (as drawn) HAS got some hair, but we shouldn't bother about details. I'm glad that he (or perhaps she) has been so popular.
Best regards to you all
