MARCH   APRIL   1993

NORTH SHORE UPDATE

Reports from North Shore indicate that there are more nudists on the beach than ever before. No members have been approached by any inspectors.
The indications given to FBG at the rally were that no nudists were using the beaches. This is contrary to our members reports.

URETITI

We are rather concerned that sun club members at the rally pointed the finger at 2 FBG members for being nude around their camp-site. It was commented that these were the only 2 people nude anywhere in the camp at any time.
I have seen sun club members en mass walking all around the camp with complete disregard for other users on many occasions. They have also treated property with the same disregard. Recent visitors tell us a high percentage of campers are nude in the camp. We do recommend that for a few days around new year when the highest number of non nudists are there to be more discrete. At other times of the year there is less need for concern.

CHRISTMAS AT URETITI

We arrived at a not too busy camp-ground but it soon filled up to a higher number than have ever been there before. The weather was mostly fine and the fishing was good. The big shellfish scare began just up the coast from us. We never heard of anyone getting sick, however, we left the paddle-crabs and tuatuas for another time. Many FBG visitors, most of whom stayed a while. We hope you all had a safe trip home, especially those from New Plymouth and Fielding. New Years eve was seen in by a happy crowd of members.

For those of you who ore wondering - Uretiti is still a DOC camp, with the same ranger, same costs, Nothing has changed from a year ago. Ignore all rumours to the contrary, it is a great place to be. Several members will be returning at Easter to continue our sun worship according to club custom. We hope the algae bloom will be gone so we can harvest the crabs and tuatuas again.

NGATUHOA

About 50 people attended. The nights were cold but we enjoyed sunny day's except for intermittent rain on Saturday. This did not dampen spirits and the evening went off very well with some inventive costumes adding interest and a monster raffle. Bill and Fern cooked a sheep on the spit with mint sauce. A water melon was donated for afters.
Everything was left spic and span for the next group and an enjoyable weekend came to an end.

HELP! - MISSING PROPERTY

During Ngatuhoa 3 photo albums went missing. There was an extensive and intensive search later in the week. One album eventually turned up. These were donated to the club by an older member to keep as a record of club activities in earlier years. We would like the remaining 2 albums returned as soon as possible. Does anyone know where they are? Would the person who has possession or knows where they are immediately phone John (09) 576 5219 or Jim (09) 525 6067 or post them to our box number.

HOLIDAY IN NORTHLAND

After seeing the notice about camping at Mangawhai Heads in the last newsletter my wife and I decided to try out the accommodation offered.

With its bush setting and its complete freedom from wearing clothes "Talstrom" is very reminiscent of a Sun Club atmosphere - except that, while being quite private, there are no high fences to exclude the world nor sets of rules to obey. Ian described the cabin as being fairly basic but we found that it had everything that we would desire in a bach and it was certainly more comfortable than cabins we have hired in a textile setting.

For a cabin it is quite spacious and has plenty of everything for two or three adults. One slight drawback is that there is only tank water available so that it is necessary to use water sparingly. In addition Ian and Shirley have a B & B service available in their beautiful home where a tastefully appointed double bedroom, with en suite, is available. Their spa pool is at the disposal of both B & B and cabin occupants. For those who like dogs they have two pedigree Corgis which tend to bark at visitors but are real softies underneath.

There are at least four beaches in the Mangawhai area suitable for nudists but at the peak holiday period were rather over-run with textiles. In the quieter times Mangawhai Heads itself has ample room if you walk north. There are also many little bays and coves and pohutukawa to provide shade. The approach road is sealed and good. Pacific Beech, Eyres Point (Quarry Beach) and Te Arai Point on the contrary, have rather poor metalled roads, have few trees but offer wide stretches of creamy sand and the foaming waves of the blue Pacific. And beautiful Uretiti is only 25 minutes away, where we joined Fran and John and other FBG members on several occasions.

Wellington NEWS

March - April, 1993

Rangi Woods Camp

The Rangi Woods camp held on Wellington's Anniversary weekend was an enjoyable and successful social event, The weather gods turned on three great days, and everyone took full advantage of the sunshine to explore the various bush walks and swimming holes.

Daytime. events included swimming in the river, playing games such as cricket, sunbathing, and bush walks. Those with an urge to climb hills, climbed Mt Maharahara in the nearby Ruahine, Range. On Sunday a group walked along the Pohungina River and returned through the bush.

An after dark visit to see the glow worms was well worth while; it is unlikely that you could find a more dense concentration of glow worms anywhere.

About 30 people attended the camp this year, many for the first time. Those who were asked if they had enjoyed themselves, responded very positively, and said they would come again next year.

Breaker Bay

Frank reports increased numbers of nude bathers at Breaker Bay this Summer, despite of the weather, and our recent beach day confirmed this. There were many times more nude bathers than previous years.

Marilyn has heard the beach spotter plane passing over Breaker Bay referring to it as the nudie beach. So it would seem that Breaker Bay is well established as Wellington's nude beach.

The Eastern News, a local community weekly, also has encouraging news. In an article entitled "Nudists declare war On local beach voyeurs" reference was made to the activities of a few voyeurs, and the determination of the nudists to rid the beach of any unacceptable behaviour.

The following week, in an article headed "Report voyeurs to police" the following appeared:

Kilbirnie Police are urging sunbathers at Breaker Bay beach to contact them immediately if they are harassed by voyeurs.
Sergeant Des O'Sullivan says nude sunbathers are entitled to just as much protection as anyone else who uses the beach and they should feel free to call the police if they're annoyed.

"Nudists have got as many rights as other people. They're all in the community", he says.

Congratulations and best wishes to Marilyn and Grant on the arrival of Kerrie Louise on 10 February, 1993.

Wellington Meeting

A Wellington Free Beach Group meeting will be held in the lounge, St Andrews on the Terrace, Wellington, at 8pm, Friday, 26 March, to discuss items of business that affect all members of the group in this region.

This will be your chance to have your say on the organisation and direction the group takes in the coming year, so please be there.

Swim Nights

The winter swim nights will be held again this year. This year the swim nights are being organised and run by members of the Wellington Free Beach Group. We would appreciate your full support. The first swim night will be at Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre, Porirua, from 6pm to 8pm on the first Sunday of April (4/4193). There after they will be held at the same time on the second Sunday of each month, up to and including November. There are barbecues, canoes, rope swings, and various other play equipment as well as a warm toddlers pool.

Fred Bear:

A Good Choice of Name

The name for the Free Beach Group logo was well chosen. It sounds like Thread Bare, meaning naked. Both words of the name make up homophone, unlike say, Nicholas Bear where only one word has "meaning", and that being "without pants". Our logo is also non-sexist since Fred can be short for Fredrick, Fredda, or Fredricka. Finally, of course, Fred's initials are the same as those of the Free Beach (Group).
If anyone can reveal the history of Fred's origin, please share it with us.
