NORTH SHORE UPDATE

We have had no feedback of any sort from those members using the beaches. It would appear that the council inspectors are busy with more important things. Two members informed us that they were not going to use the North Shore beaches any more because nudity was illegal. We don't know where they got this from, but they obviously have not been reading the newsletters - this makes me wonder why we even produce a newsletter.

Letter to North Shore City Council

The North Shore City Council have replied to our letter, which asked for clarification on some matters of interest concerning the issue of nudity on beaches.

During the summer months their Beach Patrol Officers [temporary staff], will be in uniform and will be readily identified. For queries or complaints on breaches of the by-law, or other issues, when these officers are not on patrol, ring the N.S.C.C. Action Line, and the enquiry will be referred to a By-law Officer for reply.

They agree that the condition of N.Z.N.F. approval of the by-law was on the basis that a nude bathing beach be identified. So far this has not been possible therefore the NZNF submission is not to be interpreted as supporting the by-law. It appears that Pohutukawa Bay is not covered by the ARC, by-laws. This matter will be dealt with by the Auckland Regional Council when they formulate rules for a Regional Coastal Plan. Public comment is likely to be sought on this matter at some time in the future. The FBG is an appropriate body to make whatever submissions are necessary and the committee can look at it then.

The NSCC fully recognises that the FBG while being affiliated to the NZNF is nonetheless an autonomous body. We are not governed or ruled by the NZNF and our opinions do not need to correspond with theirs. Any past or future submissions we make to the NSCC or to the ARC are therefore our own.

HOLIDAY ACCOMODATION is offered at Mangawhai Heads. (Down the coast from Uretiti).
The proprietors offer self contained cabin or in house accommodation (bed and breakfast) for adults only (their rules not ours). 11 acres forest and bush. (See p16 of the June Naturist).
Contact Ian or Shirley Morton, R.D. 2, KAIWAKA Ph (09) 431 4060 for tariff and details.

We paid them a visit Labour Weekend. It is not a camp ground but is a private farm about 2km from Mangawhai Heads Beach. You must ring and arrange beforehand because accommodation is limited and not suitable for a mix of nudists and non nudists. However a private area is also available to pitch several tents (BYO cooking and toilet facilities) and charge for this can be negotiated.

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS AND SUN CLUBS

The FBG has been mentioned in several newspaper articles in Wellington. There has been no indication that the FBG were involved as a club and this was made quite clear in the articles. However the two club members named are no longer members of the FBG. We wish to assure members that activities mentioned or any activity which might put the club into disrepute are not and have never been acceptable behaviour (ref club rules). Prompt action was taken to deal with this matter by the local members in conjunction with the committee.

             WAI WERA
Several of the committee members finally got together with the Waiwera pool management to discuss the problems which occurred at the annual swim night. They listened and apologised profusely and promised that it would not happen again if we wished to book for next year.

The committee have yet to discuss this but there are alternatives to be investigated.

RECENT SOCIAL EVENTS

We have many functions which are often arranged at short notice and are not put into the newsletter. If you wish to be in on these then it is a matter of keeping in touch with the committee or coming along to the sauna on a regular basis. We would arrange many more if more members showed support.

Recent events - - Night at Burgundys - plenty of food followed by two hours of show time.

Fire works night which went to the next night - even the fire brigade arrived and when they found no fire wanted to be fed instead.

Several barbecues at members places. Overnight hot pool visits.

We travelled up to Uretiti in the rain on Labour Weekend. It stopped when we arrived and was fine for the rest of the time. We got a bit of suntan after the terrible winter and look forward to summer.

The Hibiscus Coast Sun Club Report

On Saturday 31st October,Halloween night, the H.C Sun Club held a BBQ and swim night at Parakai Hot Pools.
Many of the F.B.G. members came along. The weather was fine but a cool breeze was blowing, still it was nice in the pool.
The best part of the evening was the great food, Fran's Stir Fry with Ashley's wonderful bean sprouts and veges. Sausages, steak, chips, salads and delightful cakes for afters.
Thank you Hibiscus Coast Sun Club.

URETITI

Several of our members have informed us that there are major changes to DOC policy towards nudists in the area. THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE IN POLICY WHATSOEVER AND WE CONSIDER THAT THE PEOPLE TELLING US THERE HAS ARE BEING MISCHIEVIOUS.

There is a group of people who use the area implying that they have considerable control of the area which they do not have. They sometimes try to confiscate liquor and collect camp fees especially of younger campers who may feel intimidated. This could also be the source of the rumours on DOC policy. Be careful when you are there for the first time. The rangers and custodian are only too pleased to produce their identification. (The DOC logo is usually displayed on or in their vehicle). If they cannot produce identification report them to the police or to the DOC.

We hope to be there again this Xmas New Year and look forward to seeing some of you.

DRIVE SLOWLY
KEEP OFF DUNES

The above sign has been erected at Pekapeka Beach. There is no indication as to who is responsible for the sign, or the official purpose of the sign. Local sources suggest that it has something to do with driving cars on the beach. However we all know what the real meaning of a Free Beach, and will ensure that this beach will be used for the purpose nature intended.

BREAKER BAY Open Day

Open Day at Breaker Bay on Sunday 6 December promises to be a great day. Already Frank has recruited three new members, and hopes to net more on our open day, which will be advertised in Contact newspaper. If the sun does not shine on us that day, we will be there the next Sunday. If in doubt phone Neil (383-7806).

FEBRUARY

We plan to have another open day at Breaker Bay on 7 February, and may be at Pekapeka on 21 February. This Pekapeka day, Bill has called Roll Call Day, and it is hoped as many as can make it, will be there to join in sports and other activities.

Bill has planned a starkers tramp at Cape Palliser for the more hardy types on the weekend of 13/14 February. This will include an over night camp. Phone Bill for more details.

SWIM NIGHTS

Wellington Sun Club has decided not to be the organiser of the swim nights at Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre in future. Wellington members plan to take on the running of the swim nights next year. The Sun Club will be invited to join us, and we look forward to the continued popularity of this event.

A CAUSE FOR CONCERN

I found the paragraph in the Nov/Dec Newsletter headed "Letter to North Shore City Council" very disturbing on several counts.

Firstly, and most importantly, is the way the Committee has gone against the democratically expressed wishes of the Group. The NSCC's attitude existed and will have been known prior to the AGM vote by people present at the AGM, and they had their chance to state this if they thought it relevant. Nothing has changed since then. The City Council's attitude can not therefore be used as justification for not sending the letter "as required by the AGM".

Secondly, the FBG does disagree with the NZNF because the first objective of our Constitution leaves us no other choice. This point also had its opportunity at the AGM, and so the committee is bound by the AGM vote.

Thirdly, the same statement by the committee states: "We are an autonomous body and are quite entitled to have different views from the NZNF .... ". This being the case, it is illogical for the FBG to be seen to be defending the NZNF submission, or quoting the conditions in their submission, especially since the FBG membership has unanimously expressed it's dissatisfaction with the NZNF at our AGM.

I note on the front page of the Newsletter a paragraph about nudists being conned by the by-law. It appears that the group can only gain through making our stance on the by-law clear.

I trust the committee will reconsider their error, and we will see a note in this Newsletter stating that the letter and copies have been sent in accordance with the AGM requirements.

Merry Xmas

Newsletter No. 4    Jan 1993

We wish you a Happy New Year and hope that the weather starts to improve now January is here.

As you will be aware the committee at present consists of Michael and John but we would like one of our women members to join so the committee will be more balanced. Any volunteers please phone John (352-8503).

How about some input from you? Remember that it is your group and we welcome all ideas, no matter what they are. Let's hear from you, by phone, letter (note our P0 Box 5408, Papanui) or next time you see us.

The Canterbury Sun Club had its open day in November and those of us who risked the weather had an enjoyable day in Pineglades. As a matter of fact, the weather was much better in Rolleston than in town that day, with plenty of sun for all. The pool was nice and warm and there was some good games of Miniten. There is another open day scheduled for February. We will advise you of the date later.

Some of our members are having their holidays at Mapua. Let's hope they are getting good weather up there.

Our information from Auckland is that there are not many fully paid up members from Christchurch. Come on all of you! It's only $10 a year and it gives you news from around the country and helps pay for the postage for our own newsletter.

There will be a barbecue at Chris Arnold's place on Sunday, January 31 at 5.00 pm. If it is a nice day why not go to the beach first and then we can all go back to Chris's afterwards. If it's raining you are still welcome to come and we can eat indoors. This is also a good chance to introduce your friends to the group. So bring someone along with you if you can. We will all be respectably dressed. After the barbecue those that wish can go down to Lace and soak up some more heat. Come to all 3 events and make a day of it, or just come to whatever takes your fancy. A phone call to Chris letting him know you will be coming will help him organise but it isn't essential.

Yours naturally

John and Michael

RIVERLANDS CHANGE IN STYLE.

For the past 18 months Riverlands Hideaway resort has been pursuing a clothes optional policy. While the holiday complex was not totally completed — we ran it on the lines of the European style resort where people had a choice if clothes were to be worn or not. This season we introduced restrictions to this policy made from comments by holiday makers. Clothes had to be worn in the kitchen - lounge and rec room plus single males had to be accompanied by a female. There are a far greater number of male nudists in N.Z. and woman are put off by having a lot of naked men around.
Riverlands — operating as clothes optional relied on the support of nudists throughout N.Z. because operating this policy also kept a large number of clothed people away.

This season being our second, has seen very few naturists using our facilities. Apart from the handful that stayed on for a few days after the H.B. rally they have been non existent.
We have decided that if the naturist content of N.Z. was not interested in coming here it seemed pointless trying to carry on with the clothes optional policy.
The resort - while still not entirely complete has been very expensive to set up and we need a continual flow of people through to make it pay.
While many are staying away because of the naturist element, as well as not being supported by the naturists themselves, we are forced to cancel the clothes optional policy.
We still will welcome naturists - but nudity will not be allowed in full view of other campers unless in specific areas - Spa - Sauna and Sunbathing beaches. The swimming pool is one area where discretion must be used ie: during the day if children are using the pool or families of clothed people, togs must be worn.
Other sunbathing areas are to be built as we can afford it and in most instances will be available for nude sunbathing.

Riverlands station has 1700 acres in which to roam if they please.

We apologise if this new policy upsets naturists but in order to survive we must attract people from all walks of life.

The proprietors,

Bruce and Pauline McVicar.
