Dear Friends, 20th April, l979.

I hope that you have had a good summer, fit and well and nicely tanned.
Although the summer was slightly below average, that is, for hours of sunshine, it was still a successful and a very pleasant summer for the Free Beach Group. Our numbers continue to grow and the future looks good.

NEWS FROM THE DIARY.
Most of our weekends have been very successful, with only a few having been "rained off". Special mention must be made of the Bush Walk on the 5th March. On the rangers advice, due to the slippery conditions, Ken led us on the Buck Taylor Walk which started from almost the same place as the Odlins Timber Track walk. This took us down onto the beach by the Pararaha stream where we then walked along to the fresh water pools for a swim and lunch. Afterwards we walked back along the beach, along the old railway track to Karekare. We then had to walk (very wearily) up the hill back to where the cars were parked. The 20 members who took part all, deserve a Gold Star except Elaine M. who had a lift up the hill, so Elaine deserves only a silver star.

NEWS FROM THE COMMITEE.

There has not been a committee meeting since the last Newsletter and as the next one is scheduled to happen just after publication of this Newsletter, there will be no official news.

REPORT from our BAY OF PLENTY DIVISION.

Sarndra reports that everything is going from strength to strength down in the sunny Bay of Plenty. She did mention particularly that a dress ring had been handed in to her and anyone describing it to her, will receive it.

NEWS FROM ABROAD.

I see in the "B.N.News", a report that the B.B.C. 1 film "Let's Go Naked" was viewed by approximately 20 million people. The film 50 mins long, televised in the late evening was a factual, unsensational but telling presentation of holiday naturism in France (Agde and Montalivet) Yugoslavia(Koversada) and California (Tree House Fun Ranch). It also included interviews with many club members and non club people.
The following days press nearly all reported favourably.
In the same B.N. Magazine, I see that the Cunningham District Council's Leisure Committee have agreed in principle to make provision for nude sun and sea bathing at a site on the N.W. Coast of Scotland.
It is very interesting to see the many Nudist Holiday Resorts being advertised in the B.N. It would seem to be a growing industry in Europe with distinct benefits to the Nudist World, because a lot of people are willing to try nudism when they are well away from their own back yard, and there is a strong chance that they will become active nudists when they return home.
All in all it would seem that Europe is moving towards a much healthier climate in regards to Nudism. Lets hope that like as in so many other fields New Zealand follows the European trend, and we look to the future with happy expectations, but of course, we must not at any time get complacent in our attitudes, and must at all times be ready to convert a neighbour, friend or workmate, or anyone who has half an ear open.

SPECIAL INTEREST TO AUCKLANDERS.

And yet more good news, the Swimerama season starts, similar to last season. It will be the 3rd Saturday in very month except October, so keep your eye on the Diary. It will beat the Panmure Olympic Pool between the hours of 6.30. to 8.30. p.m. Adults 50 cents Children 25 cents.
A slight difference this year. The series will be sponsored by the combined Auckland Clubs and the F.B.G. and to be run by the F.B.G. so we really need your support, because we don't want to lose any money on this. This has got to be the cheapest "Saturday night out" for you.

In addition to the Clive Green Sunday Night Sauna, we are invited to the Sauna Sessions at the St. Luke's Squash Centre run by the A.O.H.C. with Jim McGivern as Host. This is a new venue for us. See Diary for details.

PHOTOGRAPHY WEEKEND.

Robin and I were very disappointed with the request for models for the photography outing. We. had plenty of camera clickers volunteering, perhaps I was wrong in using the word model, because models were not what we really wanted, but everyday folk, in order to convey to the magazine buying public that we are everyday folk.

NEW ZEALAND NUDIST FEDERATION RALLY 1979.

I am pleased to be able to tell you that the Wellington Sun Club will be hosting this year's Rally. This will be held from the 30th December, l979 to 3rd January, 1980. Costs will be $18 per adult all inclusive. More news in the June issue of the Naturist and further Newsletters.
I hope that by giving you early notice of this event, the Free Beach Group will be well represented, if only to show the other Clubs that we are pretty much the same sort of people as they are.
Each day of the Rally is usually split between Sunbathing, Sport and Entertainment, so that everyone comes away from the Rally rewarded one way or another, so please start thinking and planning to go there. (Gunter get into training!!!)

THANK YOU NOTES.

We would like to thank Oliver Wahrlich who has just moved into the Auckland Area from the South Island for supplying us with the article on Acupressure, The Chinese 'G-JO' Technique. I hope you all find it informative and interesting. - Page 4.

Our thanks also to Gary for telling us about the following beach. OHUI - This is out from Whangamata and very suitable camping is available $1 per night on a farm at one end of the beach (rest of beach backs on to Forestry - 5 miles of sand and dunes).

Thanks also to Stuart of Northland for amended directions to Pakiri South. From the hill, towards the main road to "Te Hana" turn right at McEloy Road, follow tar seal road for six kilometres to a sign on left which says Pakiri, from the sign the road is winding and the surface is metal for 20 kilos, till you come to Pakiri School. From the school turn left and a short run past the store and hall to the beach.

PEN PAL WANTED

I have had a letter from a young Chinese gentleman, a permanent resident of New Zealand who will be returning to New Zealand at the end of the year. At the moment he is an Electrical Engineer on board a ship and would like to have some pen pals. He is 25 years old and his hobbies are reading and music. Should you wish to write, I will be only too happy to send your first letters on.

NEW ZEALAND NUDIST FEDERATION A.G.M.

For members wishing to attend to observe the "goings on" the venue is Lake View Hotel-Motel at Taupo on Sunday 3rd June commencing 9.00 a.m. Our representative will be Emiel Roland. Members wishing to stay overnight must make their own arrangements with the Hotel-Motel, preferably stating that you are attending the N.Z.N.F. meeting and are a financial member of the Free Beach Group.

GENERAL NOTE.

Although it may appear to be the time of the year during which there is reduced activity, I will repeat my request from the last Newsletter for an Organiser in the Hamilton Area, to organise such things as Saunas, Hot Pools and maybe a social, because winter activities are looked forward to by many people.

Please don't forget to notify me of any change of address or telephone number, particularly as we shall be issuing an amendment list to the Directory with our next issue of the Newsletter.

Thank you for all your support and attendances at the beaches It has been most pleasant meeting all our new members on the beach, not forgetting of course, all our older (earlier) members as well.

I hope that you continue to join in the activities over the winter.
I sincerely hope that each of you have made at least one friend this summer and that friendship will continue with you into next summer.

Contributions and suggestions are always welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Swimerama.

Yours sincerely,

P.S.     Since writing this Newsletter, Emiel tells me he has had an accident which has seriously damaged his leg and as a result will be incapacitated for the next few weeks, and will possibly not be able to attend the N.Z.N.F. ½A.G.M.

We are very sorry to hear this and we wish him a speedy recovery. (The Nudist Movement cannot afford to have him out of circulation too long).

SWIMING'S THE THING - The chilly winds of winter are approaching. For some the sniffles, aches, fevers and bed. For others warm rooms fires, woollies and the soothing sound of rain on the roof.

Exercise is difficult in the winter. It's not so nice to go jogging when the rain is teaming down. It's not so enticing when the temperature is down and a raw wind a'blowin. The family are not too sympathetic when one, commences running on the spot in the lounge right smack bang in the middle of their favourite TV Western.

     So what to do?

Swimming's the thing. A trip once or twice a week to your local indoor heated swimming pool will provide all the exercise needed to keep you up to the mark throughout the inclement time of the year. Amazing how a few lengths of the bath (not yours) will give those slack muscles a kick along.

Swimming is one of the few complete exercises, complete in that nearly every muscle in the body are used, from the toes to the face and including the heart and lung.

Nudists in the Auckland Area are to be commended for organising for their members regular trips to indoor pools throughout the winter and indeed, some include the summer too. There's something to be said for a stimulating thrash around in the water followed by a hot cup of coffee and good conversation, not to mention the beneficial effects it has on the body.

ACCUPRESSURE.

THE CHINESE 'G-JO' TECHNIQUE by O. O. WAHRLICH.

Much has been written on the arts of physiotherapy, chiropody and osteopathy and their acceptance or rejection by the medical profession but what of the most ancient discipline of them all - possibly the source of all the modern manipulative sciences - acupressure?

Acupressure (the 'G-JO' technique) has been successful in known practice of ancient Chinese culture for some 4,000 years: long before Western civilisation and modern medicine ever existed.

'G-JO' is roughly translated from the Chinese as meaning 'first aid' but the techniques are substantially different from the splinting and bandaging one often considers when thinking of Western first aid. The 'G-JO' system relies primarily upon fingertip stimulation of tiny pressure points in strategic places throughout the body and is not intended to supersede or replace standard Western first aid or emergency techniques. Coupled with therapeutic massage it is effective in relieving am and various symptomatic discomforts and provides, in the basically healthy person, a natural alternative to many non-prescription, over the counter, pharmaceuticals.

The ancient Chinese surely had knowledge of physiology (the normal function of living things) and of the science of immunology, the body's own relentless struggle to defend itself against disease and disorder. It was traditionally assumed that the nature of one's health was a reflection of the state of the subtle, yet omnipotent, bio energy the Chinese call 'Ch'i' the essence of life common to every life form which surrounds and permeates each of us in a 'sea of energy'. While not easily explained or defined, the concept of bio energy. is vital to the successful practice of traditional medicine. It is thought to have a definite, predictable route through every living body: to flow along a pathway in a fixed pattern somewhat like the network of a complex railway system in a total, complete looped circuit with important terminals, major routes and ancillary interconnections: the tiny stops along the way being called 'acupoints' and it is these points, connected directly to the major organs of the body that are used in acupressure and in its more exact derivative, acupuncture.

The nature of bio energy is to flow smoothly and harmoniously throughout the body but an infinite number of situations can occur, caused perhaps by mental or physical stress, where the biometry may be 'warped' out of its synchronised flow causing an environmental imbalance which, if not corrected, may affect one part of the body or another in what Western medicine calls disease: surely a dis-ease! The occupants, with stimulation, immediately respond to help readjust the vital flow and allow the body to perform its natural, continuous function of healing and changing its life style gently back from the state that was offensive.

The body's complex, intuitive system of safeguarding its own health often appears instinctively such as a craving for one food or another and food therapy is an important aspect in the philosophy of traditional healing. Also we massage an aching part of our body, rub our eyes if they feel tired or wring our hands when anxious. In doing so we contact many of the pressure points of the 'G-JO' system and even the random scratching each of us does in response to an unprovoked itch often stimulates one or more of the body's therapy points in relieving the annoyance.

An understanding of the value of bio energy and the use of biorhythm, the cyclic science of life which affects every living person with predictable, regular physical, emotional and intellectual periods of elation or depression, timed from birth, could well be the message of life that transcends that of known prophets.
