Guest Editorial

1998 -

a Happening Year

Each year when I attend the New Zealand Nudist Federation Rally, I make a point of visiting one or two clubs in the region and my visit to Taranaki Naturist Club -prior to the National Campout at Rotota gave me a first hand opportunity to see the progress that this small, but very positive club has made since it "came down from the mountain". Those of you who read about the BOP Sun Club in the last NZ Naturist will also know of the hospitality extended to Brian and myself in their lovely camp ground. Full credit goes to the members of both these clubs who show the value of their membership in a practical way.

Aptly named "Sunrise", a round of golf at Nelson Sub Club is a must and they now tell me that you can soak in their luxurious spa pool afterwards. No sooner had the dust settled around the "Tardis" at Pineglades and we were leaving the Mainland again, this time to the Grand Miniten tournament and the Wellington Sun Club proving yet again that they are tops when it comes to organising an event and they can turn on the sunshine.

One of the highlights of the year would undoubtedly be the upsurge of interest in many clubs around the country, some gaining a membership increase as high as 25%. Admittedly not all clubs enjoyed this benefit, but clubs that had the foresight to feed the media with this good news formed the platform for a very well received television interview during "Breakfast", broadcast nationwide on TV One.

And yes, it was fun too! Anyone who saw that programme has a smile at the thought of Mike Hosking wearing a pin-striped bathrobe.

Thanks to the co-operation of clubs, the ratification of business from last year's Council meeting proceeded favourably and the Executive is mindful of the deadlines required. Details under the stewardship of NZNF Secretary Pam Kelly have been met with infinite patience and we are all grateful for her expertise. We don't hear much from Ian Miller, NZNF Treasurer, but thankfully, he does sign the cheques and keeps the books and that is all we ask.

SIVP Christine Turner can always be counted on to give support to South Island ..clubs when required. NIVP Mike Kelly is keen to heed the call from many rally attendees and will be presenting a remit at this next AGM to establish alternative sporting rallies and campouts. Mike has also overseen the NZNF Survey, with Peter Holt entering data and presenting preliminary results which indicate a number of issues that will need to be addressed in the near future. Peter hopes to have a more detailed analysis completed before the next Council meeting.

The presence of the New Zealand Nudist Federation on the World Wide Web, another significant achievement during the past year and now with our own domain name of NZnaturally, the possibilities for exchange of information are tremendous.

Few realise this would not have been possible within the constraints of our budget had it not been for the tremendous amount of volunteer work of our newly appointed Internet Officer Murray Nash.

Another appointment made during the year was that of Supporter membership Group Secretary Kevin Sampson and we are grateful to Kevin for taking up the reins with such notice. A busy time for Trophy Sec. Ken Mercer as he grapples with the final touches to our Sports Handbook and yes, it will be presented for acceptance this year. PRO Chester Holmes is not sure what will come his way next and our national promotion "An Invitation to Women" in October was co-ordinated by Pam and we now have a media database set up by John Lowe.

The next important event on the calendar will be held in conjunction with the Australian Nudist Federation and affords clubs on both sides of the Tasman to advertise "National Naturist Week". Further details of clubs around the country promoting "Clothes free Recreation" can be found in other pages of this magazine. Whether it be Nude Golf or Line Dancing, Volleyball Tournament or Campout, let's get out into the community and promote our way of life. Show them it's fun... naturally.

MAGIC
MOMENT

OF '69

by John Lowe

  The Event

Less than a year after the Wahine Storm, Wellington woke to a Sunday made for the beach.

Four months after the Indecent Publications Tribunal determined that there had never been any legal reason to air-brush pubic hair from the Naturist, Wellington went to the beach.

Seven years before the hippies got their gear off at the first Nambassa, Wellington tried it at the beach.

Just months before his death in 1970, founding naturist editor, Percy cousins, led the first beach outing by the Wellington Sun Club. Together with the nearest neighbour club at the time, Wanganui, the combined expedition resulted in about 200 bums on the beach for the day - and I don't think one of them was burnt!

What beach?

Kuku Beach, just 7 Km south of Levin; 13 Km north of Otaki. Then it was known as Ohau Beach. Colleen and I chucked our kids in the back and carefully placed the 'Canteen' in the boot of our trusty Morris Oxford. Chilly bins - what are they?

In those simpler days, a warm lemonade wasn't such a revolting thought, somehow. None of the multitude of kids cared anyway - it was so nice to be free in the sea.

In our innocence, we thought life in the sun was healthy! Being your own vitamin D factory was in fashion. 'UV' and 'SPF' were not even twinkles in the eye of the Cancer Society.

Late in the morning, a hundred odd cars arrived in convoy. After an hour of settling babies and toddlers and scanning the horizon for scattered siblings, a farmer's tractor picked its way through our midst. The trailer was loaded with a couple of gleeful kids and a laughing mum, but in the driver's seat: dads face looked fairy-tale grim. They disappeared into the hinterland. On return an hour later, there was no apparent epiphany for the farmer - so it was not that much of a surprise when, early in the afternoon, a police car nosed carefully into view.

While 'some trepidation' might be an adequate description for some of observing, Percy 'fronted up' - 'had a word' and the neutral grey Holden returned from whence it came: Levin.

There had been a complaint about 'some naked people on the beach'. The intrepid officers, confronted with a couple of hundred more than the 'some' they had anticipated; retired for consultations.

As the perfect day wore on, trepidation was lost to relaxation. We were in our element. We were with the elements - all of them. Following the inevitable circadian rhythm, as fire approached water and air approached cool; reluctantly ready to resume our insulation, we arose from the earth.

At around 5.30pm the red cherry atop the neutral grey returned with a decree from Wellington, no less:

"You've got half an hour to put your clothes on."

So those of us remaining spent a pleasant twenty-five minutes chatting with the law brokers before climbing back into our clothes for the journey home from a magic day.

On the front page of Levin's Chronicle the 'Listening Post' columnist reported gleefully the following week: "OH HOW they gaped at OHAU Beach on Sunday. Regulars say they've never seen the beach look so bare. After all it is not every day one sees nudists disporting themselves on the silver sands". A month later, over a 6' x 4' photo supplied by the club, the Chronicle published 20 column inches, sorry: 50 column cm; headed: "Beach Bathing - Nudists Feel Law Needs Relaxing". Toward the end of a generally favourable article, Sergeant Castell was asked: 'What action would be taken if the visit was repeated?' The classic response: "We would take what action was necessary in the circumstances which prevailed," still holds!

I visited the venue recently. It's still right at the end of the road (signposted: Kuku Beach; 2Km south of the Ohau Store on S H 1). The river still forms a lovely, safe lagoon-type pool, between there and the sea over a dune. There's still no one there.

  The Event

I called on the current managers of the farm behind the beach - no they hadn't heard of that occasion: they'd only been there eight years. A commemoration visit? No - they couldn't see that being a problem for anyone there. I called in at the Levin police station to find the law, in the form of Sergeant May, indeed relaxed with that possibility.

So what's changed in the last 30 years? Other than the 'relaxation of the law', not a lot, it seems - come and see for yourself. Join Wellington and local clubs for a National Nudist Week highlight next February 7th - for more proof that, even 30 years on, a day at the beach with the kids is still: truly magic!

The Event

by Markus Peter

Hungary does not have traditions in the field of naturism. At the beginning of the 1920s it created a sensation when young people appeared on the banks of the Danube at the weekends and took the sun unclothed on the hidden glades of the riverside willow-beds. Suspecting a conspiracy, the authorities put the gendarmerie into action against the 'disturbers of the peace'. In consequence of such actions of the authorities, naturism could hardly spread in Hungary between the two world wars.

It is said that at the beginning of the 1930s there was a nudo-naturist colony in Balatonf¸red, which functioned strictly within closed doors. However, it is a fact that at the end of the 1930s and at the beginning of the 1940s there was a so-called "sunshine colony" in M·riaremete. The Èlite of the capital went there to sunbathe, naked when they could. The matter turned into a scandal, and in spite of any arguments concerning the necessity of physical and mental refreshment, the colony got banned.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the development of the movement in Hungary gained impetus mostly by what had been seen and experienced in the German Democratic Republic of that time. If Ungewitter is the father of international naturism, an architect of Budapest, Gusztav Streitz is the father of the Hungarian one. He rallied around himself 40 to 50 naturists who went with pleasure to the naturist beaches of Europe, and they did not only tent together on the unpeopled islands of the Danube, but they also took part in the Naturists' World Meeting in Belgium. Gusztav Streitz negotiated and strove against various state organs for the legalisation of naturism and for the establishment of naturist clubs for many years, but in vain. All this was attained only in December 1983.

In the mid-1970s, naturists settled down on those parts of the lakes in DÈlegyh.za which are farthest from the traffic.

By the beginning of the 1980s, on weekdays thousands of people, at weekends ten thousands of them enjoyed the elevating experience of nakedness.

The first naturists of DÈlegyh·za can still remember the police raids, the finings, the tumbling over of tents, and the physical violence... We can now smile at the fact that an article published in 1986 recalls this period as follows: "Many people got tired of being slapped on the backside by policemen because they forgot to put on their bathing suits...".

Having enough of the atrocities, in 1982 a committee was setup at one of the lakes in order to organise the everyday matters and an official association. It compiled a by-law, arranged the removal of rubbish, the building of lavatories, the sinking of wells, the keeping of public order, and it struggled against the authorities for the authorisation of the official naturist association.

The Event

After the formation of the The Association of Hungarian Naturists', nudist facilities were established one after the other. In addition to DÈlegyh·za, in Moh·cs, Baja, Debrecen, Miskoic, Szeged, at the lake of Velence and in many other places the presence of naturists was officially authorised or tolerated. At that time the movement could not be restrained any longer, since there were other naturists besides those organised into association. The atmosphere of that time is well described in an article published in a weekly and written by Anna Sz·sz about her rowing tour of 10 days between Budapest and Baja. Large families with their children and dogs moved to the banks of the Danube. They pitched camp, swarmed the banks of the river, the beaches and the magnificent sandy shallows; they bathed, ate and drank, swam and basked in the sun. there were men and women, children and elderly people, with and without bathing suits. They got rid of their bathing suits as an unnecessary burden in the heat. And nobody was shocked and nobody exclaimed that public morals were in danger!

Two international events played an important role in having Hungarian naturism recognised. In 1987, on American initiative, the Friendship International Naturist Meeting was held in DÈlegyh·za, where the president of the INF/FNI was represented. The second event was the staging of the Naturist Olympic Games at DÈlegyh·za.

Nowadays, the trials of the bygone days provoke a smile, as in out time anybody can make their choice between the official or tolerated naturist places, can find camping sites and pensions, beaches and swimming pools, can bathe unclothed in summer and in winter, too. The travel agencies are pleased to organise anybody's naturist holidays abroad, and what is more, it is possible for anybody to apply for any tour of Europe's greatest FKK travel agency even in Hungary or for admission into several naturist organisations - in return for the payment of a small subscription - thus the advantages arising from organised naturism can be enjoyed by everybody.

NATURISM IN THE 21st CENTURY

Report of the 26th International Naturist Federation World Congress 1998

by Kay Hannam, NZNF President

Twelve years ago almost to the day, I was winging my way across to the other side of the world, to soak up as much diverse culture a 30 day whistle-stop tour of Europe would allow. Followed by a rather leisurely romp through the Lake District of England, on to Scotland, culminating in a life long dream of attending the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

What a far cry from all the pomp and pageantry of Edinburgh, the 26th INF Congress held recently in Sweden was to be. As the elected delegate attending the Congress - the theme "Naturism in the 21stCentury" - it was not as a spectator, but as a participant working alongside the representatives of nearly 30 federations at the three day Congress.

The agenda indicated discussion on Youth and Sports activities; another interesting topic was the move to prevent publicity of non-recognised clubs in publications of other federations; feedback from the computer network Internet session was also a high point and it is satisfying to know that this federation, thanks to the support of our own team, are way up there at "pole" position.

The member federations elect from time to time for periods of four years the President, two Vice-Presidents and four committee members. These seven people form the Central Committee which meets at least once a year.

The INF Central Committee, General Secretary, Minute Secretary and the three interpreters (English, French and German), delegates and observers, complete the formal layout of the Congress.

The first day of the Congress was devoted entirely to elections of officers and discussions by the European Naturist Union, in particular the big Youth and Sports events in Europe.

According to the newly elected President of the ENU, Nita Walst from the Netherlands, some of these events were unable to be staged due to the lack of money! Given the opportunity to "listen in", it certainly gave me an insight of what was in store for the rest of the Congress.

The INF President, Karl Dressen DFK/Germany chaired most of the meeting. An address regarding the theme of the Congress "Naturism in the 21st Century" was given by Vice- President, Wolfgang Weinreich, also from Germany. Among other members of the Central Committee was George Volak from AANR/USA, an important ally for New Zealand, Public Relations Officer for non-European countries. A Legal Commission and two Auditors also attend to various functions required of the INF. Incidentally the UK/British Naturism put forward two candidates, one of whom Mick Ayers will now play an active role in Public Relations for the INF.

In his report, Karl Dressen stated "The national naturist federations, ever the carriers of true naturism, are finding increasing support with government.

Their representatives are invited to official functions and they are present in the executive bodies of national sports federations. Thus the INF has at last become, in the course of time, what it is today: the representatives of a worldwide movement, which has found its place and co-operates in modern developments".

We must be missing the boat here somewhere. The next time an invitation is extended to one of these important functions, perhaps someone would be kind enough to hand it on! We have obviously got some catching up to do.

Not so in our attitude towards each other. New Zealand has a far more "live and let live" attitude, and our right to freedom of expression in our de-regulated society raised the heckles of some of the "big guns" at the Congress when asked to vote for this "motion" put forward by the FBN. (Belgium)

"For us it does not seem to be normal that a club not being recognised by his own federation can advertise in an official publication of another federation".

Some misunderstanding of what everyone was actually voting on ensued and the Netherlands then proposed an amendment which affords fair treatment based on the principle of hearing both sides of the argument.

Having "put my oar in" as it were earlier in the day, I was in fine fettle to present the NZNF proposal:

"That the INF fund an academically stringent study of the positive and negative aspects of naturism for participating individuals and for society generally".

I was pleasantly surprised by how much attention the delegates had given this tow-page justification and process for this study prior to the meeting. Even more so of how well many of them responded with positive reinforcement. The CC has now been given the task of undertaking an assessment, with the assistance of an expert social scientist, of the information that is currently available on the benefits (and detrimental aspects) of naturism. To prepare for consideration at the following Congress in 2000, a costed proposal to fill in the identified gaps in the information.

Much of what makes a Congress tick goes on at the social gatherings and we were very fortunate to have the company and support of David Basford, President of the Federation of Canadian Naturists.

  The Event

The final presentation at the Congress by Gerhard Skagestein from Norway gave suggestions for an International naturist symbol for maps, signs etc. C'mon Kiwis, what can we come up with?

Naturist tourism, particularly in Europe, is conducted on a grand scale that many of us at club level here in New Zealand find hard to imagine. During the three weeks prior to the Congress, thanks to Roger and Vena Wright, I was able to visit a number of naturist clubs in England as well as have a memorable day at Studland Beach. A two day visit to a naturist island in the Stockholm Archipelago proved a welcome breather after several days journeying by train across from Oslo. To arrive at my destination at Partisanens, Sweden, and meet Helene, a lovely Swedish woman whom I met at Pineglades several years ago was absolutely wonderful. I don't know who got the biggest surprise!

My goal was to come away with more knowledge and understanding of how we can be a strong presence within the International Naturist Federation, and in turn, encourage their continued support and information sharing. I hope that in time my attendance at this Congress will be of benefit to us all in New Zealand.

With his help, an approach was made after the meeting to INF Vice-President Wolfgang Weinrich. This liaison will be a valuable link in communication with Wolfgang who has assured us that this proposal will be followed up. David was also successful in gaining the assurance that no federation should be allowed to display the flag of another country at the congress table without permission.

Naturally '99

A

National

Week

Full of

Naturist

Activities

A golf challenge, a tug-of-war on the beach, a Hangi. These are some of the events that clubs around the country are running over NZ Naturally '99. The week runs from Saturday 6th February to Sunday 14th February.

South Canterbury Sun Club squeeze in first with an 'Introduce a Friend Day'.

On both Sundays 7th and 14th, Pineglades will be having a 'Whanau Day' (Extended Family Day) with Hangi. The club will be challenging the Rolleston Volunteer Fire Service and other local fire services to a round robin volleyball competition. I've got a feeling that there will be a number of barbecues or spit roasts fired up around the country over this week.

On Sunday 7th, Wellington Sun Club will make another trip to the beach first visited 30 years ago - Kuku beach. There is a whole article on this event in the same issue of the naturist. Wellington will be challenging other Lower North Island clubs and the Free Beach Group to fun beach games - nothing too serious though - the emphasis is on FUN in the SUN.

Some events are already well formulated and we're just waiting for the day. But others still have plenty of time to dream up something to suit themselves. Here's another idea that is being used by Wellington at their own grounds on Saturday 13th February. A challenge will be issued, via any (free) media to come and beat one of the club members at our sports - if the challenger wins they get a prize. Simple enough really - I guess the numbers who turn up will be dependent on the prizes on offer, and how its promoted - we'll keep you posted on the results.

I've often thought that there are plenty of people who work at weekends, with less social hours than us 9-5ers.

Here's an opportunity to run a midweek Open Day to cater for them - there are still Mums out there looking for a bit of relaxation, and of course others who would take an afternoon off in the week whenever the weather suited. Now's the chance for clubs to get some promotional help with their efforts.

Nelson Sun Club are holding a Nude Golf Tournament on l4th. Alpine Lakes are holding a Club Campout at the grounds of Aoraki Naturally in Tekapo over 13th/14th. Taranaki have an Open Day followed by Wine & Cheese on the last Sunday. Hibiscus Coast have half price camping for the entire week, and will be putting on games and barbecues. Since they are only 8km from Waiwera Thermal Pools and so close to Auckland, there must be visitors to Auckland who will use the club as a base.

Earlier, during January 23/24/25, 1999 the Sweetwaters Festival will provide northern clubs the opportunity to promote "Clothes Free Recreation" at Puhinui Reserve on the Manukau Harbour, Auckland. The music festival made popular some years ago, is ideally suited for promoting our lifestyle. If you have a genuine interest in nudism and would like to take part in these nationwide activity days, phone your nearest club listed in the directory at the rear of the magazine for an invitation.

The Australian Nudist Federation have run this event for a couple of years and found it to be a success.

The Event

Drive, or walk into the hills as we did when our vehicle overheated and you will find the silent remains of a long gone township.

On a very dry hot summer's day the surroundings reveal the extremely challenging conditions our pioneer gold mining families must have had to cope with. And more is the pity, I doubt that they were able to wander around the hills with the same pleasure as we did this summer.

Today, we have the freedom to roam the hills for leisure, free of sticky clothing. But do bring your hat, glasses and shoes and don't forget a bottle of water.

Photo: Steve Patrick

The Event

Wander at will between the remains of the mud and stone homes and wonder in awe at how families could live in such cramped conditions, so far away from civilised' towns. Think about the long hot summers and limited water supply, then breathe a sigh as a warm breeze blows gently against your bare skin.

Walk around, over and through the huge machinery (the stamping battery) lying derelict and wonder how the massive components, forged hundred of miles away, were dragged up into these bills. Consider the noise as they pounded away at rock to extract the valued gold. Check out the caves and tunnels. Think of the blood, sweat and tears and then look around again and the silence of it all today. Almost ghostly but very beautiful to my eye. I feel the pioneers left us a legacy. The hills are alive, you only have to go up there and breathe it all in.

By Robbert Broekstra

Several times during the past year we have organised nude canoe trips through the beautiful province of North Holland, just of Amsterdam.

A small group of eleven naturists set out again on the 23 August 98 to visit "Het Twiske" a nude recreation lake and water way where we hired 6 Canadian canoes for our exploration.

The Syntech Video company from Australia was along to film the adventure for their upcoming video titled "Nude Around the World".

This beautiful area provides excellent opportunities for photography and boating on the lake and canals is very relaxing. Ducks and swans swim unobtrusively by allowing one to commune with nature.

The following weekend we planned a bicycle trip in the town of Hanskamp some 20 kilometres from the city of Apeldoorn. This was also to provide a feature for the video being produced.

Unpredictable weather late morning saw us retire to a nearby restaurant/bar awaiting some afternoon sunshine.

The Event

Article photos: Robbert Broekstra

Whilst in the bar, we hit upon the idea of serving the dozen or so patrons nude.

The manageress was quite agreeable to our offer and the patrons considered it quite appropriate and so we set about serving the guests for about an hour or so whilst the activity was captured on video.

Early afternoon with the sun again shining, we set off on bicycles to the nearby forest and lake area.

The cycle ways were quite deserted this day and we enjoyed the opportunity and freedom to cycle nude through this forested area away from the crowded city, where many thousands of people commute to work daily on bicycles.

We await with interest the release of the video in early 1999.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor

A fresh approach to a nudist calendar has been developed by a new company near Boise, Idaho. S.S. Calendars is a family owned company founded by Duke and Karen Grey, who have enjoyed exploring the beauty of the Northwest for many years. The Greys are members of the AANR(ASA before that) and TNS for over ten years now and have been enjoying the nudist lifestyle for many years prior to that. We desire to bring some of these beautiful scenic spots from around the world to the nudist/naturist world community through our calendars. Our goal is to travel to each club in the US and as many foreign clubs as possible gathering photos for future calendars. Having a wide variety of scenic photos of nudes in nature from all parts of the world would provide a calendar that can have a closer meaning to all who have them.

Concentrating on breathtaking scenery being enjoyed by Naturists, "Nature and Nudes" provides tasteful presentations in full colour

photographs each month of the year.

To place an order or for further information, visit the company's website at www.webpak.net/sscals, or see our advertisement in this publication. You may email sscals@micron.net, or write to Naturist Calendars, 6726 Overland Road, Boise, Idaho 83709.

Dear Editor

New Zealand law permits public nudity on beaches where naked sunbathing is not uncommon.

This clarification of the Summary Offences Act of 1981, was ruled by the high Court in 1991, see Ceramalus v police, AP/76/91.

There is a part of Waihi Beach to the south of Island View that is used for nude recreation and is therefore a beach where nudity is legal.

Recently a man was arrested and charged by the police for walking naked on this beach. Of course the charge had to be dropped as no law had been broken.

I expect that this all resulted from ignorance and or misunderstanding of the law, by all concerned.

The beach is there for all to use, so let us use it in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.

G A North, Katikati

INVITATION TO PINEGLADES

Being involved in promoting clothes free recreation, the opportunity to extend and "Invitation to Pineglades" last November and March was met with a great deal of enthusiasm.

As on previous occasions, club members from Pineglades naturist Club (formerly known as Canterbury Sun Club), came up with all manner of ideas to support this invitation to our lovely grounds at Rolleston.

A barbecue lunch was the first and one of the best ideas for our Invitation Day. Our Chief Tucker Upper, Nigel Copus and his band of helpers were to prepare several hundred hamburgers during the rest of the summer months, as these proved to be a very popular fund-raiser, with both members and visitors alike!

Invitation flyers and posters using our Go Natural' logo were circulated with our Club newsletter for members to distribute among their friends, family and work colleagues; also to pin up on various notice boards around Christchurch.

Even though the weather was inclement on the first of our Invitation Days, it nevertheless brought out quite a number of new visitors to Pineglades to gain an insight into our relaxed lifestyle.

An unusual feature of the day was the very worthwhile presence of a number of volunteers from the Cancer Society of NZ, with their "Fun in the Sun" promotional mobile caravan. Their members who "staffed" the caravan were not at all phased by the Invitation to Pineglades and were able to show visitors that our clubs and the Cancer Society can work alongside one another, with the added proof that their "Fun in the Sun" campaign is a positive one. What is more they are keen to come out to Pineglades again at the earliest opportunity. Now the National Naturist Week in February 1999 would be a good time, don't you think?

Repetition is the best form of learning, or advertising in this case, and at our "Invitation Day" last March, the carp-ark was described as "chokka". We were literally swamped with visitors, many of whom showed interest in joining later in the year, others were keen to place their applications there and then.

Make it a date and join us during National Nude Week, 6-14 February 1999.

CLUB NEWS

MANAWATU OUTDOOR

LEISURE CLUB INC

Hosts of NZNF 47th National Rally.

It is 6.30 in the morning at the Manawatu Outdoor Leisure Centre. Not one human body is in sight. The birds are singing, what few rabbits that are left are enjoying a peaceful breakfast but at the same time keeping a watchful eye out for the enemy.

The swimming pool is still, the miniten courts are deserted and the clubhouse is silent.

This, however, will not be the case in approximately two weeks time. There will be no sign of the rabbits, the birds may not be as vocal, the swimming pool will ripple with the bodies of those early morning swimmers and the clubhouse will be inhabited with the caterers organising the food for sale for the day.

The grounds will be covered with tents, campers, caravans and mobile homes - in fact for seven days, peace will be shattered at Lake Downs. For the fourth time, MOLC is proud to be hosting the National Rally and preparation on the grounds is already under way. The Rally committee have named this rally 'Naturally' and hope that all who attend will have a relaxing and enjoyable seven days. Of course, for the more energetic there will be a well planned sports programme, but the main emphasis will be for members to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

The social programme has some surprises with the main event of the rally being the New Year's Eve Ball. This will allow those who wish to go all out and dress up for the Ball or for those more adventurous to allow their imaginations to run wild with fancy dress.

The Rally committee and members of MOLC are looking forward to greeting their guests and making their stay on the grounds an enjoyable and memorable seven days.

So, if you haven't attended a Rally before, why not start with visiting our grounds and enjoy our hospitality - it could be the start of a new way of life.

We invite all those attending to stay on after the Rally and share and enjoy the grounds with the wild life who no doubt will return on the 4th or 5th of January. - Edna

HAWKES BAY
OUTDOOR LEISURE CLUB

Next time you visit Hawkes Bay Outdoor Leisure Club it will look different from the last time. Sounds logical doesn't it? Everything always changes, but the Rapere grounds have undergone facial surgery. and as you can expect after an operation, it takes time to heal the scars before the splendour comes out. We have partly succeeded in reversing this process but further beautification would have been ruined by the recent felling of old pine trees. We have planted a great number of native and exotic trees and bushes around the grounds. A complete hillside is covered with young natives and other areas have their own theme. Thanks to a couple of dedicated women we now have a "babbling brook". That is if there is water running through it, which is most of the time. All this planting has led to a ban on sheep, so no more poos around the grounds.

About three years ago we celebrated the finish of the clubhouse, which took 22 years to complete. It looks as if we shall have to celebrate again, because Norman and the committee have been busy once more. The kitchen now has new vinyl, new fridges and a microwave and there is a new stereo. They are even better than the ones I have at home! For people more inclined to relaxation, there is now a cosy spa pool in a rimu lined room. What's next? Well, we are working on soft cushioned and heated toilet seats.

But the manufacture has some problems with the temperature control, so he tells me! Be patient!

You want to visit Rapere but the only thing you can bring is your food? Not a problem. Now you can hire bedding to sleep comfortably in Norm's Lodge. Remember the bunk room with the lumpy mattresses. We had lots of fun burning them, and putting something more comfortable in place.

All this activity has come about through the massive increase in members, we went from 45 to 71 in one year. How and why this happened is still a mystery to us, but we could put it down to just keeping our existence in front of people. The fact that people can find us probably helps too. Our name is on the gate and we have road signs at both ends of Glengarry road. So if you come from Taupo, turn off into Glengarry road, 12km past Te Pohue settlement. It takes less than 2 hours from Taupo to Rapere. That may be even less in the next couple of years because the council is planning to tar-seal this road. They are starting at the club end! No more dust! To make our club even more attractive for visitors and our own club members, we give them the 5th night of their stay free of charge. We shall do this for the whole of the summer season 98/99.

There is one thing that hasn't changed and that is the 'always fine' weather and the friendly people.

Hope to see you here. - Aaldert

CLUB NEWS

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC

The Rally 2000 committee have had a couple of meetings and appointed Ken Mercer as Co-ordinator. Ken has been involved in the clubs Management Committee for a number of years, having been sports officer, membership secretary, and PRO and of course Ken is the Trophy Secretary for the NZNF - so he has plenty of skills to bring to bear, not to mention help available from the rest of the crew to make the 2000 Rally one to start the new millennium off.

The grounds to the club are looking very well cared for - dare I say manicured - at the moment. The rhododendrons put in over the last 3 or 4 years will be blooming soon, just in time for the Womens Day event on October 10th. Even the formerly out of sight (and mind) Bottom Paddock is getting a spruce up with a view to generating some future revenue from timber. Once again we have had a major water leak - estimated to be 35 litres a minute. The decision to replace the main supply pipe was an easy one to make this time - it would cost less than the water bill! And also the leak could not be found. We bravely continued with an "English Pub Night" function on the Saturday night including the meal - which meant dirty dishes. The dishes got clean, but it makes you realise how much we depend on the supply of good, clean water coming out of a tap. The pad has been poured for the new Spa & Sauna complex to be sited behind the hail and the timber is neatly stacked awaiting construction - they're probably at it while I write this! There was a small problem when the foundation s were dug - we found the remains of the previous clubhouse in one corner including roofing iron and mattresses and Brylcream bottles. Once extracted the foundations needed to go deeper at that point. I expect to have a feature display of old bottles in the new building!

We've a full sports programme and social calendar this coming season!

So if you're passing through on your way to the South Island or coming to see the Museum of New Zealand, make a point of dropping in to Friendly Wellington.

THE SOUTH CANTERBURY
SUN CLUB

We are awakening from semi- hibernation to a glorious early spring. Hard to believe we had a coating of snow on the ground and minus 15 degrees just two weeks ago. Our working bees and socials have continued throughout winter and our workers, pleasantly jaded, have been happy to play cards, chat, watch telly or just nod off under the Christmas tree...

So our social nights have not been hard to organise.

Our mid-winter Christmas dinner and 'Streeek' was an event on its own and a lot of fun was had by all members, who came from far and wide.

Planning is well underway for our Camping Extravaganza to be held from 9th to 17th January next year. We are running this in conjunction with the Free Beach group from Christchurch and intend to have a programme alternating between fun events and relaxation for both adults and children. Trips to the river (although we have our own pool!) a day tramp through the gorge and camping related activities. Guests can participate in as much or as little as they please, after all it is their holiday. Anyone interested write to PO Box 13, Geraldine. - Helen

Meanwhile both children's and sports areas have undergone major improvements. Our driveway has had turf blocks laid over the worst stretches and more work will be done to improve this.

Our club now has full camping facilities and visitors are requested to show their INF Passports when attending. Our address and phone numbers are in the magazine. The grounds are in farmland and lifestyle blocks three kilometres from Orewa township and SH1.

Thermal pools and a five screen cinema are 8km and 14km respectively from the club.

We look forward to a long hot summer and send our best wishes to all for the coming festive season. Best wishes from "Kirikau" - Jim Peddieson

CLUB NEWS

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY -

WOODSIDE PARK

Recently I had to travel south for business and while I was away I managed to steal one or two hours and find the sun shining on a sheltered part of Breaker Bay. As I lay soaking up some rays and listening to the sounds of the sea, my mind wandered and I realised how lucky those people are that live by the sea, but I also knew that most probably they don't utilise this gift as much as they could.

I also realised how lucky we are at Woodside Park to have our club grounds so close to the city and that with summer approaching there will be longer evenings for those who work till 5 pm to be able to sneak out to the club for some after work quality time.

I, like most people, am guilty of not realising the potential and utilising the facilities, even during winter, that are close to hand. I now look forward to the warmer weather and the longer evenings as I sit here knowing Daylight Saving has begun.

What does Woodside Park have to offer?

With spacious grounds, surrounding bush, well catered facilities within the new club house and powered camp sites, I am looking forward to the balmy evenings and glorious days where I can spend time relaxing in the sun, playing games with my daughters, conversing with others or swimming in the pool! Pool - yes, we built a new one! A beautiful blue tile edged pool with steps and even room to swim. With bated breath, we have watched the progression from lawn to a massive hole in our grounds, by courtesy of ??? and a huge dirt pile and on to some resemblance of what will be the end result.

The Event

Come - share this experience with us. In January 1999, visitors to Woodside Park staying 3 nights or more go into a draw for a $20 petrol voucher.

Why not join us today.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB INC

Deadlines prevent a report on the Labour weekend "Mini Campout" but if early registrations are any indication, fun should be had by all.

Happily the usual, and expected, resignations did not occur at subscription payment time this year and, coupled with a steady flow of new member acceptances, we have already achieved a membership increase of nearly ten percent.

Rotota has a varied mix of local and distant members and with the recent change to a four term school year, many are realising the worth of Rotota as an ideal holiday base within easy reach of Rotorua and Taupo and a comfortable day trip from the beautiful Mt Maunganui and Ohope Beach on the East Coast.

With a section of gravel road outside our grounds, we have a regular passing visit from a Council Grader. Recently, Caretaker Wayne managed to convince this machine to veer West and two hours and a modest cheque later, the transformation to our access and internal roads was stunning.

Even better, the promise of a repeat of Raewynne's renowned percolated coffee and cheesecake seemed to appeal to the driver for a return visit - time will tell!

We wish fellow Naturists a Merry Christmas and a sunny New Year. We all hope that El Nino again plays her part and provides us with another glorious summer.

- Christine

CLUB NEWS

TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB

The Club has been active over the past three months with BBQs and meetings most weekends. The committee has been working together getting the grounds looking great and with the new shelter fence and paving in front of the clubhouse, they have provided a warm sunny area which has turned into a meeting place for all the members. We have been planting trees and generally cleaning up the area and with the swimming pool up and running it's looking to be a good social season. Many of the members have their caravans on the property at present and are enjoying the naturist lifestyle, using the clubhouse and the kitchen for most of the cooking. Something that is really a chore when you are in relax mode.

The club is preparing to run a garage sale soon at Jim's place so everyone can share in the excitement of parting with their dearly loved pieces of junk. The textiles can enjoy purchasing all this good gear and in doing so support the local naturists club. We have recently run a raffle and thanks go to all who purchased a ticket. The prize was some wonderfully quilted rugs.

Summer's here so come out to the club and enjoy our unpretentious lifestyle.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC

Welcome to the Bay of Plenty - Yes we survived the Winter Floods of June and July. The club suffered little damage, water was cut for 4 days but we had plenty of reserve in storage tanks. The Caretaker's bus sat in about 8 inches of water during the night. I hear they slept through all the heavy rain only to awake in the morning to silt, branches, fence battens and pongas outside the bus, plus water from the small stream which had grown overnight into a major waterway in the Matata area. Over the winter months the club had three well supported working bees to fell trees which resulted in a good supply of firewood for a few years.

The Event

Photo: Robbert Broekstra

With the trees being felled, we have a large cleared area by the waterfall and hot tub for ferns, native trees and an area for relaxing with a good book, plus extra tent sites.

Indoors, the members have finished lining the walls, gib stopping, papering, painting, curtaining and now we have a new lounge room with a new Kent fire. Plans are already afoot to renovate the kitchen area.

During the cold weather our Caretakers could have felt quite lonely and isolated but members who don't have far to travel have made a splendid effort to come out to the club for visits, BBQ when not raining, hot tubs and general duties around the grounds.

Our mid-winter Pot Luck Xmas Dinner was a huge success. Meat was supplied by the club, cooked under the watchful eye of our new President, John with help from the members.

Members supplied the veges and dessert and there was a good variation of some delicious winter dishes. Last month we had a Home Brew Tasting followed by a Vice Versa party and mid-October we had a Wine and Cheese/Toga party.

We have two new goats to help our long time resident goat (Sunshine) to maintain the more inaccessible places where our ride-on mower cannot negotiate. Other wild life we are blessed with are Tuis, Wood Pigeons, King- fishers and a variety of other bird life.

We have a number of maintenance jobs and improvements planned for future working bees. An annual event is to clean out the Dam-cum-swimming hole which runs a close second to our main swimming pool for summer activities. Another is to build a rock wall adjacent to the clubhouse to increase our flat land for BBQ tables, etc.

If you are travelling south or north for the Rally, break the journey, stay a few days and enjoy the beautiful Bay of Plenty.

The Committee and Members wish all you Sun worshippers a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, safe driving and many happy days of fine weather for the summer months.

Warren

FREE BEACH GROUP INC

We in New Zealand are blessed with miles and miles of beautiful uncrowded beaches. We are double blessed as there is no specific law ordering us to wear clothes in the water or precluding full natural enjoyment of the elements - air, earth, sun and water.

Weather permitting, events during Naturist Week will include Petanque at Tumbledown Bay and a family sandcastle competition at Woodend Beach. Look for our yellow flag with the Fred Bean logo bearing the words, "BARE AT THE BEACH". - Joyce.
