ON HUGS AND HANDSHAKES

J. Ritchie

One of the most important features of naturism, and one which defenders of the practice never let us forget, is the mutual trust and acceptance which is part of life without clothes. It's when your worst fears about the imperfections of your body are blown away on a breath of total acceptance.

Being nude with others and not being jeered at, not being told you are either too fat or too thin, too white or too freckled, is nice. You feel acceptable.

A firm handshake, a kiss or a hug, an arm about your shoulders. These gestures, like pictures, are worth a thousand words each. Your self esteem is boosted, your sense of belonging increased and you feel more free than ever to relax and be yourself. The security derived from friendly touch is inestimable except to say it is great.

Psychological research shows that children who receive a lot of caressing, hugs and kisses are more open and friendly and outgoing than those who don't. Indeed, those children who don't get many hugs and kisses from their parents are likely to be shy, often withdrawn into fantasy, and even hostile. And there is no reason to believe touch hasn't the same results in adults. No-one is so grown-up that he doesn't need cuddles.

As a psychiatric nurse, I made it the hallmark of my relationships with patients to touch them however I could according to their ability to accept touch. Sometimes it could only be a friendly slap on the shoulder, other times my hand on a forearm. But one particular response to my touch summed up the effect touch can have where words fail. One of my patients in hospital was feeling dejected and depressed. She couldn't believe her husband loved her any more and by all the assistance we couldn't get from him I'd say he didn't. Because her relationship with her husband was no longer close, she lost the energy to enjoy her children and they suffered too. Then they became unmanageable. Then she broke down and had to come to hospital. Tri-cyclic antidepressants the psychiatrist prescribed did nothing for her except give her headaches and constipation. She'd been on those for months before coming to hospital. We included her in a therapy group where she had the opportunity to share her problems and fears with others, learn from their comments and also receive instruction in coping skills from a trained occupational therapist. Although this helped a little, she still walked about in her distinctive dawdle, eyes to the floor and arms folded about her chest.

I couldn't stand seeing her subjected to the same old psychiatric platitudes again, especially not from my own lips. I walked directly to her and hugged her tight. Then tighter still. A flood of tears spilled onto my shoulder then she looked me in the eye and said "You know, that's the only thing that's made sense to me since I came to this place". Then she cried some more on my shoulder. I made sure she got lots of hugs after that, from other staff too.

Our culture too easily associates touch with sex. For instance an eight year old girl I know is not allowed to cuddle her uncles, nor any other man who visits, because her parents fear she may be molested one day if she's too friendly. Therefore they stifle her natural inclination to touch.

Touching between men is often regarded with suspicion. Handshakes are okay when men greet, but hugs and kisses? In some cultures they're okay. For instance in some churches in Australia and New Zealand a hug is the standard greeting even between men; whereas such a greeting between women has long been generally acceptable.

What about when both the men are nude? A hug shouldn't be considered any more sexual than a handshake, but the operative word there is "shouldn't". If you're afraid of what people will think, then be sure it's a reasonable fear and live by it.

A man giving his best cobber a massage in the nude is not sexual either ... but it's nice and helps deepen friendships. Once people are comfortable with nude living they should touch as freely as when they are clothed.

Remember though that some people find touch threatening, especially from someone who is not an intimate friend. Some won't even let you within a metre of them, however you must respect this personal space just as generously as you give hugs and handshakes. As trust develops in your relationship that personal space may diminish or even disappear. It is common too, for that personal space requirement to widen when a person is nude, especially when nudity is still a new experience. Always respect the need for distance which some people have. In their own good time they'll come closer, and make it plain you may touch.

Touching is also forgiving. When I was a lad and got into fights, as often as not they ended in a handshake. It was a firm, look 'im in the eye kind of handshake. That was no mere formality but a reaffirmation of friendship and a gentleman's agreement to forget our differences and black eyes; in fact a gesture of forgiveness.

Next time at the club why not give someone a back rub instead of just lying inert at the poolside? Or what about a full massage if you have time? (This should take about 1½ hours and is very hard work. Buy yourself a book on it and get into practice if you haven't already). Even a foot massage can do marvellous things for the entire body. Pick on the sweetest granny you can find and see her relax under your soothing touch.

The beaut thing about touching someone else is that it has the same effect as being touched. You see, just as we need to be touched, we also need to be free of touch. So if you need a reassuring hug the chances are someone else does too, so give one. There's no surer way of getting one when you need it.

N.Z. NUDIST FEDERATION INC.

Gary Watson President

I have been asked to tell you what the New Zealand Nudist Federation does and what benefits members get from the Federation.

The Federation is made up of clubs throughout New Zealand and operates through its Council which are all club members.

What does the Council do for us, the members should ask?

The Council which is made up of elected Officers and also Delegates acting as Club Representatives, represent all 26 Clubs, Groups or Companies.

The elected executive is: President, Vice-President, North Island; Vice-President, South Island; Secretary, Treasurer. The other elected Officers are: National PRO., Trophy Secretary, Business Manager - N.Z. Naturist Magazine; Editor - N.Z. Naturist Magazine.

So you can see the N.Z.N.F. is the Club and Clubs Members, whose aims and objects are the pursuit of nudism in all its social aspects.

The Council speak with one voice on your behalf to Local and Central Governments if so required; co-ordinates large scale advertising, publish and produce the N.Z. Naturist magazine which is sold to many overseas countries; makes and formulates general policy for the good of nudism in New Zealand; maintains a Trust Fund called the Percy Cousins Trust Fund to assist Clubs with loan monies and such like. This Trust is managed by three Trustees appointed by the Council. It maintains all the sports trophies that are competed for at the annual rally.

Officers of the N.Z.N.F. are available to give advice to Clubs on matters pertaining to nudism in New Zealand and the rest of the world. Also to help and advise the setting up of new Clubs and or Groups. Mediate on disputes within the Clubs or Groups if so asked by the members of the Club or Group.

The Council meets twice a year to discuss new trends and developments pertaining to nudism throughout the world and if suitable to New Zealand adopt as policy, and with the Clubs and Groups help and assistance implement them.

The services of the N. Z. N. F. are many but this is a brief summary of some of the services the New Zealand Nudist Federation can offer to its members.

NUDITY BEGINS AT HOME

Tahanga

When Kiwis are of kindergarten age, how much parental tolerance greets their natural urge to romp naked?

Back in 1963-66, Jane and James Ritchie* and colleagues interviewed mothers of 151 four-year-olds, from different sectors of New Zealand society, on many aspects of child-rearing. They asked these questions about nudity:

"Now we want to talk about sex and modesty training. How do you feel about allowing X (the child) to run about without his clothes on?

"(If opposed to it): What have you done to teach X about this? "When did you start teaching him about it?

"(If not mentioned): How about modesty indoors?"

The researchers rated the mum's "willingness to tolerate nakedness" from "not at all" willing up to "unconcerned" about it. The urban mothers, in Wellington, rated rather tolerant:

  Urban
Pakeha
Urban
Maori
Not at all (tolerant) 8% 17%
Some 2% 25%
Moderate 14% 13%
Slight concern 8% 8%
Unconcerned 68% 37%

Since the most tolerant response was neutrality - like, "I don't mind if the child goes nude" - we may guess that no significant number of mothers expressed enthusiasm for nudity. Indeed the wording of the questions could inhibit such an answer.

The rural and small-town mothers (Bay of Plenty) were less tolerant. For the four types of these non-urban mums, the severe "not at all" percentage ranged from 40% to 63%.

Two decades since have brought more acceptance of adult nudity. Would more Wellington mothers today feel relaxed about child nudity?

GEYSERLAND
LEISURE PARK LTD

On Saturday September 1, 1984, Ro-To-Ta Sun Club Inc. purchased a controlling interest in Geyserland Leisure Park Ltd.

Our aim is to develop Geyserland as a sun and leisure park for the nudist movement and invited guests on a smaller scale than originally proposed and unfortunately, due to lack of finance, over a longer period of time.

As an act of good faith we have, at considerable expense to Ro-To-Ta Sun Club, which has meant deferring some important development works of our own grounds, cleared and grassed some fifteen (15) acres of G.L.P. This land, while still being in a fairly rough state, is able to be camped on with tents and caravans.

To enable you to see this development and to generate interest and suggestions for further development of this unique area, we would like to invite you to spend a weekend with us at the grounds. All facilities of Ro-To-Ta Sun Club, long drop toilets, cold showers, fresh drinking water, club house and B-B-Q's will be at your disposal.

Attractions of the park include swimming in beautiful Lake Ohakuri, warm water stream and waterfall, tramping, boating, trips to nearby Orakei-Korako Wonderland by arrangement as well as being a very convenient base for touring to great tourist spots in the nearby Rotorua and Taupo districts.

So come and see what we have done, what we can do and enjoy yourselves. We are sure you will be both surprised and pleased with what you see.

THE KIDDIE PORN HYSTERIA

COULD KILL FAMILY NUDISM/NATURISM!

by Marc Schuyten

I have been researching all manner of pornography and sexual perversion for some 15+ years. Conservative estimates indicate that 50+ % of marriages suffer from sexual problems. The vast majority of people are sexually less than satisfied for one reason or another. Sexual unhappiness results, in large part, from the Nakedness Taboo.

On one hand: children are taught to suppress natural nakedness. On the other hand: society teaches them that the un-natural partial nakedness of exceptional females may be USED to sell everything from cars to cigars! This leads children down the road of utter conflict and confusion. So it is that fathers are rendered incapable of taking part in the birthing of their own children. So it is that people are rendered incapable of accepting the most natural and beneficial method of nursing babies (breastfeeding). So it is that society instills the most unrealistic and unaccepting attitudes in people with respect to the natural processes of elimination. So it is that we plant the seeds of sexual frustration in our children!

We teach our sons to USE females as sex OBJECTS and we teach our daughters to accept being USED! The ultimate result of this learning is RAPE!

The suppression of natural nakedness and the USE of un-natural nakedness also leads to the ugliest kinds of pornography ever seen by Human Kind!

As a result of these, and other/similar, realizations: we started The PARENT SIG (SIG = Special Interest Group) some 5 years ago. We adopted nudism/naturism as the best way to teach children that their natural desire for nakedness is healthy, so that they could grow up with far more realistic/accepting and healthier attitudes towards the natural functions of the genitals (birthing, breastfeeding; elimination) and so that, as adults, they might be able to have far more realistic/accepting attitudes towards how people enjoy their genitals. The ultimate result of the Nakedness Taboo is that people are rendered AFRAID of sex. The Taboo only leads to: FEAR, Frustration & Grief!

In effort to promote the benefits of social family nakedness, we sold our home and invested everything we had to start the world's first magazine devoted to nudist/naturist families, "Families-Naturally" (F-N).

On 7 September 1984: they ransacked our home, arrested Linda and I, and they took our children into "custody" for 5 days!!!

The police went out of their way to assure me that the magazine F-N was NOT obscene and they took NO interest in the subscriber list.

They did take most of my research material and they displayed it to the media as though:

(1). all of it was pornographic, and

(2). as though we intended to distribute it!

While we abhor child abuse more than most (we did risk ALL WE OWNED to crusade against it!): police lies and abuse, media sensationalisation and exploitation, and the public hysteria must be stopped! When the police accuse us of the very thing we have given our all to campaign against, it really has GONE TOO DAMN FAR!!!

This utterly obscene TRAVESTY must be fought! And we will fight it like it has NEVER BEEN FOUGHT BEFORE!!!

WE will fight them because we CAN!
WE are not the ones in the WRONG!
THEY WILL LOSE!

In their greed for promotion and gain, THEY made FATAL (the most obscene!) MISTAKES!

Our fight BEGAN with a 50 MILLION DOLLAR lawsuit against the police!

And that fact hit the headlines within a week of the arrest!

Problem is: we will not see the results of that lawsuit for SEVERAL YEARS.

If you want them to lose - you will join us! They can only win if enough of YOU do NOT help us. NOW is the time to strike BACK!

If you're convinced that family nudism can help YOUR children, as NOTHING ELSE CAN - you now have the best chance in the history of Human Kind, to FIGHT AND BEAT those who have been inflicting the Nakedness Taboo on countless generations!

In effort to help raise money for the HUGE legal fees, we will publish a Special Booklet that reproduces all the newspaper articles and EXPOSES THE POLICE tactics and distortions!

It will be must reading for all parents and EVERYONE interested in FAMILY Nakedness!

YOU CAN reserve your copy NOW by sending $10 NOW to us at: The PARENT SIG, Marc Linda Sean Sara, 2483 Emerson Drive South Corona, California 91720 USA

AN INVITATION

There are a large number of people in N.Z. males, females, mums and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, or families as a whole who do consider that there is nothing wrong with social nudism, but for one reason or another do riot or cannot join a recognised Sun/Nudist Club. They would, should there be an opportunity support the movement without the necessity of having to join a Club.

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has now introduced into its organisation a "Supporter" member group, and you are very cordially invited to join this group.

For a small annual subscription any family or individual can become a supporter member, thus indicated in a tangible way support for the movement, and in return getting proper and official information on 'what it's all about'.

Like any properly run organisation there will be some rules, and these are set out on the application form. Simply they will be:

(a) Age 18 or over

(b) Not a member of a Club (Free Beach Group excepted - if you join a club at a later date your membership automatically lapses.)

(c) Payment of an annual subscription.

And what will you receive in turn?

Initially you will receive a receipt for your money, together with an official NZNF sticker suitable for car window or bumper; a 'Bare With Us' sticker, a year's subscription to the N.Z. 'NATURIST' and most importantly an INF/NZNF Membership Card endorsed "SUPPORTER", which will open the door to many Sun Clubs throughout the world including some N.Z. ones, and concession rates at these clubs. In due course a supporters Bulletin will be issued containing many interesting items and up-to-date information for the member on what's happening in Nudism, and associated matters of interest.

ALL applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Well now that you know something of the scheme you may like to join us.

The annual subscription has been set at $10 plus a $2 application fee per unit: i.e. individual or family.

A stamped addressed envelope to P.O. Box 1359, Wellington will get you an application form.

BULGARIA

Robbert Broekstra

When you visit Bulgaria you must know that when you mean yes, you must shake your head: NO, when you mean no, you must nod your head: YES, it took Mona and myself a while to get used to it.

We started out from Holland with our own car via Germany and north Yugoslavia direction Sofia and sunny beach.

We had little problem at the Yugoslavian/Bulgarian border and after changing money (and don't forget to buy petrol coupons) otherwise you will not be able to buy gasoline, or you must visit a Balkan tourist office. For gasoline you pay more than the local person and that's the reason of the coupons and you have to buy these coupons with foreign money. Another warning do take your windshield wipers off when it doesn't rain they love to take these when being parked, you will notice that most cars have them taken off, so when it rains everyone stops and puts them on, by the time I got inside our car I was soaking wet. Also a sticker was stolen from our car, it was good advertising though as it was the INF sticker, they will probably be figuring out what the letters stand for for the rest of their life.

On to Sunny Beach which is located between Varna and Bourgas, 80 kilometres from Varna and 30 kilometres from Bourgas.

When we arrived at Sunny Beach we had driven almost 3000 kilometres in five days. Sunny Beach is a stretch of about five kilometres long with hotels, restaurants, night clubs and so on. You could call the Black Sea the Riviera.

Of Bulgaria, for all of the East Block countries, and one will see many people from the DDR, Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

Upon travelling as an individual tourist like us you will find your hotel, which we booked in Holland and paid for, filled up. We had to roam around four hours before Balkan Tourist had found another hotel for us. I must say it was a very nice hotel, but the next morning we had to leave again to go to another hotel which was certainly of less quality than the one we had originally booked. All foreigners get a pass to show at the different spot checks along the road that you really belong in this area, either a camping ground or hotel, and one gets stopped quite often. It does getting annoying at times.

After we finally got settled we decided to look for our naturist beach as we had been writing with a naturist for a short while. He had sent us a map with the different locations on it.

It took a Belgium chap to start organising naturism on one of the beaches just pass the MORSKI sanatorium, but last year the police would show up now and then and would find a lot of naturists on a certain stretch which was easy to reach, the fine was no more than $2.30, if you could not pay it you would be locked up for a night. We decided to go to this first beach to see if our Bulgarian friend was there, we had not spoken about what day or time we would be there. So we parked our car and walk- ed for about 10 minutes when the first naturists came in sight. So we stopped and started to undress, and in no time our friend Ivan

had spotted us and came running towards us waving his hands and kept hugging us both. He told us that the Belgian chap who organised this particular beach did not get any permission this year to enter Bulgaria on account of his actions, but when locking around enough people were there, quite a few men though. Soon Ivan showed us the 5 leva he had in case the police would come, to pay the fine. The police had not come as yet this summer and it was already near the end of July.

The beaches are about 4 to 6 kilometres to the north of Sunny Beach and all are unofficial. In 1967 they had the first official beach, but as they expanded Sunny Beach with hotels, night clubs and so on, the official beach disappeared and never came back.

The following days were spent visiting other naturist beaches a little further up and that is just past the village of VLAS. Here we noticed a beach of textile and nudes together, north of that, again a small beach with mostly naturist families. This one Mona and I liked very much. For those who want to be completely alone, just walk another kilometre and you will hardly find anyone, just the odd fisherman, The beaches change from rocks into sand with rocks dominating. Here again on the beaches people from all East Block countries and lot from the DDR.

The water of the Black Sea is crystal clear and warm and I would advise you to take a hat, cap or umbrella as you will be roasted otherwise before you know, build it up slowly and don't stay any longer than two hours in the sun, when you are completely white.

We took Ivan out for dinner the last evening, but we were refused dinner on account of him in the tourist area. The excuse that was given was that a group would come in soon and they did not have enough food for us all.

We tried the next restaurant and we all spoke French as our friend was from Algeria. Here we were asked what countries we were from and the waiter approved of our company and so we got food. It was very embarrassing for our naturist friend, but that's the way it is. Tourists must have as little contact with natives as possible. After about five days our friend had to go home again to his family as his stay at the Morski sanatorium had ended.

Unfortunately we did not have time to visit his family about 120 kilometres away but in due time we might meet again either in Bulgaria or Hungary or any other country. We took some photos and film of the beaches. I also noticed that behind the beaches high above us some voyeurs were roaming around and also on the beaches, but of course that is nothing new as that exists everywhere in the world where free beaches are.

On weekends hundreds of naturists make use of the different beaches in this area. Some hints in case you go there some day.
1. Always count your change as many times they do not have the right money to return to you, or so-called. 2. Coca Cola is cheap. 3. Fruit is hard to get, but obtainable if you want to stand in a lineup for a while. 4 Drink water is very good. 5. The roads are good. 6. Buy petrol coupons at the border or Balkan tourist office. 7. The food in restaurants is limited, better ask what they have. 8. Ice cream very good. 9. 20 to 30 minutes lineup at gas stations. 10. NATURIST BEACHES FAIR TO VERY GOOD.

We don't know of any other areas that have naturist beaches (for example at the Golden Beach north of Varna, we did not see any there). For those who like churches and monasteries, Icons, there are plenty of these, but you will need a couple of months to visit most of them as they are open at odd times or closed most of the week. Few monks are left. It's worthwhile to visit. The biggest cloister of Bulgaria RILA CLOISTER 80 kilometres from Sofia you must not miss that, this is a must.

If you travel with a group you will have less problems, but we found it handy to have our car at our disposal especially when going to the naturist beaches. But you can take the bus at the station at Sunny Beach which goes every hour and twice every hour during July and August. That is the bus that comes from Burgas direction Varna. You can get off just past the Morsky Sanatorium or just before Vlas or at the camping at Vlas and walk northwards.

The evenings are much warmer at the Black Sea than in Yugoslavia via along the Adriatic. We did enjoy our trip and talked a lot with our friend. Naturism for him was something more than gold, something you could not buy, but only experience. One could say the best is free and how true in a country where freedom is so limited. BUT NATURISM PROSPERS HERE AND IN YEARS TO COME, I EXPECT MANY MORE BEACHES. NATURISM IS ON THE MOVE IN BULGARIA. GOOD LUCK TO OUR FRIENDS AND ALL OTHER NATURISTS.

'COPPERTONE VILLAGE' FIRST REAL NAKED CITY

The name almost says it all - "Coppertone Village, Naturally." That's the name of a city which, right now, only exists in the imagination of Realtor Fred Weiss, a nudist from Hudson.

If he has his way, about 2,500 acres of farmland near Punta Gorda in southwest Florida will be developed into Florida's first incorporated city for nudists.

Although Charlotte County officials are somewhat skeptical of this multimillion-dollar enterprise, Weiss is convinced there is a market for his naked city - a place where permanent residents and tourists will be able to work and play without worrying about clothes.

Walk through Weiss's dream city and you'll see a city hail, police and fire departments, a hospital, school, a retirement home and banking and shopping centres. It will look like a resort town for 10,000 to 20,000 residents - with one noticeable difference.

"Just picture your daily life, if you were raised in a small town concentrated in 10 acres, and you were raised with no clothes on," said the 41-year-old Weiss. "It would be normal for you to do your shopping and your banking without clothes on.

"That's what you have to picture here - everyone going about their daily life - only with no clothes on".

Building a city for nudists, perhaps the first nudist city in the country, sounds like a fantasy, but Weiss says he has the financial backing from Clearwater developer Carlo DiPronio to get his dream off the drawing board.

DiPronio is not a nudist, but said he liked Weiss's ideas enough to sink at least $50,000 of his own money into the project, and to attempt to persuade other investors to invest the $7 million needed to start the city.

"I love it.," said the native Italian in broken English. "I helped him (Weiss) pull it together, you know. It was almost my idea."

The village will be designed as much as a playground as a nudist community.

"I'm trying to bring everything I've ever had fun doing in my life to my doorstep," said Weiss. "Most of the people within the nudist community would prefer the same thing."

He hasn't left many recreational pursuits out of his plans. Condominiums constructed as castles and pagodas will highlight theme parks, in medieval and Oriental motifs, he said. The city will be surrounded by a moat.

Weiss says there will also be an aquatic park, a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, a skating rink, an amphitheatre and a jungle river ride under a waterfall. He is planning such activities as swimming, boating, archery, volleyball, tennis, miniature golf, horseback riding and gardening at the city's organic farm, he said.

"We're going to do like Disney did, open up with so much, and start from there," he said. Like Disney World, cars and recreational vehicles will be restricted to one parking area. After paying a $15 entrance fee, visitors will walk or depend upon monorail, tram or golf carts for transportation within the city, he said.

The city's residents are expected to be a mix of vacationers and permanent residents, said Weiss. A visitor would be able to stay at a 320-room futuristic-looking hotel for $35 a night, double occupancy for a double room or camp at a recreational vehicle park for $5 a night he said.

N.Z.N.F. RALLY

29th Dec 1984 - 2nd Jan 1985
hosted by

GISBORNE COUNTRY CLUB LTD
at
TOLAGA BAY

If you've missed the door
despair no more
Just drive right in
We'll forgive you that sin
(P.S. If it rains blame the National President)

About 3000 condominiums are expected to go on sale soon at pre-constructed prices of $28,500 for a 550 square foot studio apartment to $82,500 for a three bedroom, 1,500 square foot condominium, said .Weiss.

Weiss wants to create something different from large nudist resorts in Florida, such as Paradise Lakes in Land O'Lakes, Lake Como in Lutz, and Cypress Cove in Kissimmee.

He wants to expand the traditional concept of a nudist club into a large community. Currently, there are no cities for nudists in the United States, according to the American Sunbathing Association, an organisation of 28,000 nudists.

A nude city in America "has been a dream for 50 years," said Roland Senecal, administrator of the association. "In Europe, there is Cap D'Agde in the south of France which is virtually a city with its own post office, and it accommodates 30,000 people at one time. But America has not quite progressed that far."

"I put in a lot of years in the real estate business, where you eat, sleep and drink the business. It devours you, you don't have the time to run down to the beach and do a little swimming because you're afraid you'll lose a deal," he said. "I would like to sell real estate in a community where I'm relaxed, I can go jump in the lake or grab a fishing pole."

European nudists, he said, will flock to his city because there are few luxurious resorts for them in America. "There are over 40 million nudists in the U.S. alone, let alone in Europe. In Fonda, we have umpteen thousands, and none of them have a place like this to go," he said.

Weiss will try to blunt the opposition with reassurances about security plans for the city. He said he'll tell residents and officials his city will be home to family-oriented people who want to live in peace. "Thou shall not hassle, that's the number-one commandment," he said.

Weiss says he'll offer nudists a place where they can live, work and play - without ever having to get dressed. As a resident of a Hudson nudist park, he said he is tired of always having to put on clothes to run errands and go shopping. As a semi-retired Realtor, he said he would like to sell homes in the buff.

New Zealand and Australian
Club News

NATURI N.S.W.

We express our sincere thanks to the New Zealand Federation for the great surprise in winning the best club news for the year 1983, with the cheque attached. It will be well spent for the enjoyment of all our members.

A cordial invitation we give to any club members holidaying in Sydney, so please write to the Secretary, Naturi, Box 11, Berowra, N.S.W, 2081 for a weekend visit.

Even though the winter weather is upon us, Spring is just around the corner, and applications for membership are being received and the interest in the club life is excellent. There has been quite a frenzy of activity clearing the scrub on the mountain top behind the clubhouse, attending to the spring time gardens, cuffing and chopping wood for the sauna, barbeques and the cast iron fireplace in the clubhouse. It is really a beauty and now many pleasant evenings have been spent in front of the large stove which gives excellent warmth and with the large kettle on top of the stove gives ample boiling water for a social cupa as well as keeping eatables piping hot. The stove can also be used as a barbeque.

It is pleasant fact that more couples and families are understanding the benefits which a healthy suntan can give. Choosing the right club is important, and no one can advise you better than Naturi.

Members and prospective members are encouraged to take advantage of our quality courts, our sporting facilities are in good condition and available for use by all.

Naturi is situated between Hornsby and Gosford, approx half an hours drive either way.

Our large tiled swimming pool is very popular with crystal clear water, temperature pleasantly warm during spring and summer days and evenings. The appetizing aroma of sizzling sausages, onions and tomatoes fills the air around lunch time when members assemble in the picnic pavillion with their eskies and what have you. The children have their own large play area and splash pool. Mini Ten is played on the courts and Petanque (French Bowls) on the lawns. We have a large sun bathing area for those who wish to relax and read the book you wish to finish before tea time. There is ample parking space right in the club grounds.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB

Our winter has come and gone - such as it was. It wasn't that cold or wet. But last week it all came - rain I mean, so our grounds will be blossoming.

Our newsletter has reminded our members of the open weekend coming up, probably in November, and to look for new members.

And of course the Christmas function. I see in the "Naturist" that Wellington had a mid winter Christmas dinner. If Wellington misses out a function in December, at least they have had their celebrations.

The rally is coming up so hope all that intending to go are preparing and new and old friends will meet again.

Christmas greetings to all from Hawkes Bay.

ROTOTA SUN CLUB INC.

Once again the warmer weather is weaving its way towards us. Fortunately friendships made during the "sun" season tend to lend a warmth to these drearier months - and there is the anticipation of renewing old friendships and making new ones.

To Gisborne for their fantastic Cabaret - a special thanks for an enjoyable weekend - hope there will be room for a few more of us next year.

Since Gisborne we have held a successful social at a members home a few of us who decided to watch the gold medal events instead of catching a few winks - found that late nights (or is is early mornings) and champagne BBQ breakfasts didn't take long to catch up. Could have slept for a week.

A few of you will by now be aware of developments between Rotota Sun Club and Geyserland Leisure Park Ltd. We are pleased to say we have just successfully finalised negotiations.

The aim now is to begin development on the property - albeit on a smaller scale.

All you sun lovers out there - lets have your support and keep this beautiful area for the use of people like ourselves.

This agreement has eventuated after many months of frustrations - so consequently we intend to "let our hair down" prior to our AGM and getting on with the job in hand.

Here's to a great summer.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC

Great progress has been made on our club house this winter. Two of our members and their helpers spent long hours over Queen's Birthday weekend installing the lining - our grateful thanks to them all.

To bring readers up to date with our facilities, we have a 40 x 20 in-ground swimming pool, volley ball court, concrete miniten court, barbecue area, a large club house with open fire, pool table, table tennis table and indoor bowls - all set in over 5 acres of native bush. Extra camping sites will be available this summer and we would love to see them all full - our contact phone number is in the N.Z. Club Directory in this magazine.

Over the winter, the Club has kept going strongly with a video evening and Beetle Drive among the featured activities, and members using the club throughout the colder months, although the fire has been more popular than the swimming pool!

We have a large contingent of members going to the Rally at Gisborne this year, it looks like being a real club outing. We're all looking forward to meeting old friends again and getting to know new ones.

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC

Labour Weekend 1984 - when S.A.S.C. decide to hold a function they really make sure it is indelibly inscribed on everyone's minds.

The fun began on Friday. After the scaffolding had been uplifted from Penrose it took a slight detour from the back of the truck to the tar seal on the motorway, but after being reloaded on the truck it finally made it to the club grounds although the truck was listing somewhat to the left. Unloading was easy and the major task of assembly began. After a lot of cursing, mistakes and praying the main frames began to take shape. The arrival of another member who knew what he was doing made the completion of the framing look like child's play.

It was time to collect two hired caravans. The truck had other ideas and after a few attempts at getting up the hill firmly dug itself into the mud. After much pushing and shoving and a long run the truck was on its way again.

Caravan one collected, parked and installed. Caravan two collected, parked and one truck stuck fast in the mud again. The truck was finally dug out and returned to its owner.

A well deserved good nights sleep.

Saturday - the hangi pit excavated between showers, wood chopped and tarpaulin draped, yanked and coerced into some semblance of order around the scaffolding.

More people arriving, campers totalling six caravans and as many tents.

Speaking of tents, this article would be incomplete without a mention of the canvas apparition erected in the middle of the camping grounds. This green, well-ventilated piece of canvas stretched over about six poles held together with a prayer was the main talking point of all camp sites. I suppose the holes that let the rain in also let the wind blow through to dry it out. The owner managed to wrap himself in a sheet of black polythene to stay dry when the wind and rain were at their worst.

Time for a shower to get ready for the big night. It helps to have some knowledge of spelling as in the tallest shower Hot starts with C and Cold starts with H.

More people arriving and negotiating their way down our slalom mud ski slope into the canvas room. Thankfully the bar is open. The festivities begin.

Hangi a little late in being put down, so we are all well lubricated at 900pm when our delicious hangi meal is served up. Compliments to our chef. Everyone agrees the food superb. Dishes rinsed and partying can really begin. One of our visiting members is celebrating her birthday so after blowing out candles on her cake, we all sing and sing and sing.

We manage to crawl into our beds in the wee small hours with one question on everybody's tips - "When is the next one SASC?"

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB INC

With Wellington blessing us with a few early nice weekends it has been good to see some members starting their suntan early at our club, hope its a sign of a long hot summer.

The winter season has seen a selection of different happenings - groups have been visiting the Sun Tan Centre on Sunday afternoons for a social four hours, and are supporting a beautiful tan already. We had a very successful ski trip to Ruapehu with a full bus and everyone enjoyed themselves, have even booked for next year.

Our mid Winter Christmas party was a huge success.

Coming event at Bawdy Bills Cabaret is already booked out and should be just as successful.

The boiler has been repaired and we will have all the hot water we need for the summer season.

Scaffolding is being assembled and hopefully the club house ceiling will be finished soon.

The club is really looking good, thanks to the willing helpers on working bees.

If anyone can help us place our posters in good strategic places for the public, it would be much appreciated.

When in Rome

WHEN IN ROME

by Jim Cunningham

PEACE to all who enter here.

Wipe your feet of shame and fear.

Fear is useless; what we need is trust

Shame is nothing but the fruit of lust.

Nude is Holy; it is not lewd;

God hath made our bodies good.

If we're naked when your knock is heard,

Nude we'll answer for that's here preferred.

Come and share our wine and food,

Wearing clothes or in the nude.

In our home let us encourage you:

When in Rome do as the Romans do!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

XMAS PARTY POETRY

Xmas parties I am told,
Bring out the very worse,
When Pam and Lucille,
Set out to write their verse.

I think 'cille needs another drink,
Her rhyming is quite horrid,
Another drink will help to make,
Her rhyming blooming torrid.

Torrid means Hot and we're, Hot Stuff,
At writing verses off the cuff,
Torrid is as torrid does!!
And torrid comes out cool for us.

Pete catches us all unawares,
His eye is like an eagle,
But he will have to watch his step,
For flashing is illegal.

Poetry writing is getting harder,
As we imbibe in Xmas cheer,
But the audience doesn't care,
They're all full of Seasons Beer.

All the Jokes are getting dirty,
Now the children are in bed,
Come on Earl and Johnnie,
Write poetry for us instead.

Insecticide spray in my drink,
I really couldn't care,
You see it's killed that nasty fly,
That I found swimming there.

W.O.S.

Dear Sir

Let's have more frequent reports from the clubs about their local events. Surely each club does something in each three-month period, and/or plans a future event. Yet when our quarterly magazine appears, too many clubs fail to appear.

Suggestions:

(1) The NZN editor could extract snippets from each club's local newsletter.

(2) NZN could publish a forward calendar for the coming three months of planned nudist events: local, regional, national.

(3) Each club could appoint a reporter who would send brief items to NZN quarterly.

Tahanga.

1. & 2. Good idea if we had the relevant information.

3. They ore supposed to. Been asking why not ourselves.

Dear Sir

The area allocated for nudists is virtually opposite Bay Park Raceway to the Kaituna River. A distance of approximately 15 kilometres.

Directions to the area are well sign posted from Tauranga and Te Puke.

PEN PALS:

We have a request from three young ladies. Pat aged 10, Marsha 12 and Bobbie 14, for pen pals around their respective ages. So if any of you naturist youngsters would like to write, they promise to answer all letters.

Dear Sir

In my childhood and young adult life, much freedom of living was part of our country scene. I say "our" because my father, brother, cousins and many others, frequently enjoyed the pleasure and delights of spontaneous nude swimming in a beautiful stream which ran through our property. Life happened at an easy pace, though dairy farming was then a constant hard toil. Clothes were tossed aside on so many occasions, and I grew to love nature, and this freedom.

Although this was many years ago in Australia, I still value this quality which is evidenced in the various Sun Clubs in New Zealand. Initially, my wife joined with me, and we were able to visit a club on quite a number of occasions, along with our children.

This however, was only for a short period. Shifting to city living we found busy and varied pursuits led us away from Sun Club association. The "local" grounds being quite a long drive. Now, supporter membership is the only practical affiliation. I greatly enjoy occasional visits to a free beach, but my family have no interest in joining me.

My earnest concern though, is for all the youth who turn aside to many and varied interests, so available all the time. Generally adults and under twelve-year-olds appear to be the main "ages" who frequent the free beaches and Sun Clubs. Couldn't a section of all Club grounds be set aside for the teenagers, to have as their own adventure/recreational/leisure area? There, they could have radios, tapes, rope ladders, flying foxes, water or mud slides, wrestling games or weight lifting, tug of wars or stilt-walking - anything, so that the growing population of the Clubs have all ages catered for, and participating.

Perhaps the Club grounds could be offered to Scout groups for camp-outs? Their knowledge of adventure-leisure ideas could probably be incorporated into permanent fixtures quite economically, with everyone giving a helping hand.

Give the 'teens opportunity and encouragement to use their own initiative, to do their own thing.

The honest, free-feeling of mind and body by participation in "un-clothed" pursuits, is a great palliative to the push of modern living. Take away the suggestiveness of small bits of swim wear covering parts of male and female bodies, and a more wholesome state of mind results, in all concerned. Teenagers, changing rapidly, physically and mentally, have a huge hurdle, to adjust, and have a great self-consciousness to overcome. We see them develop in mind and body in a much more wholesome way in the clubs, than "outside" living can produce.

Very pleased to see the article by Robbert Broekstra on the world-wide correspondence club.

I note that David (U.S.A.) said, quote: "None of the grown-ups seem to look out for us that way".

I recall the delight of two 15 year old lads who accompanied me to the free beach, on an unscheduled occasion after work. They swam in the nude, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Let's try to do something very constructive to help our teenagers continue to enjoy this "best" way of life.

Yours for better living
J. T.

Dear Sir

I have received your letter about our retention of New Zealand Naturist magazine.

As this magazine is not held in any other library in the Auckland area and is published in Auckland, we are happy to change our holdings to 'permanent' in place of keeping it for five years only.

Dear Sir

I wish to send in my views regarding body hairs as asked for in the letters by Joseph M. Taylor.

I disagree with Viv Ladifference. I feel very strongly that our bodies are bodies are most beautiful just as nature made them. I feel almost overwhelmed by the truly incredible beauty of our naked bodies, all a little different from each other but all having their individual striking beauty. Why do we have to hide them away from each other inside clothes?

To me the untampered-with bodies stand out with far greater beauty than those showing attempts of airbrushing. What upsets me more than body hairs is the touching up with lip sticks and other facial paints.

Take the instance of your March issue. I will hold that the girl on the back is much more lovely than the girl on the front cover because of the lack of lipstick and nail varnish. Mind you, the girl on the back didn't expose herself lower enough to judge the hair and the more I look at the front picture the more cute I find her.

Take the picture on page 9 of the September issue. Here I do say the two girls on the left look better by retaining their growth but on the other hand I love all three. There is nothing like variety.

Oh! How I would like to meet these lovely people pictured on your pages and find out how they really tick. (I haven't yet had the courage to join a nudist camp).

I wish to thank all of you that are so open with your bodies and share with us readers their miracle parts. Is it merely nature and the principle of natural selection that has made us so wonderful or is this the Great Dream of our Maker?

Anyway I love you all for just what you are, hair or no hair.

Robert M. Hamilton

Dear Sir

I have been reading your magazine, as well as other naturist magazines, for quite some time now. I find it strange and amusing that some of the photographs you publish also appear in other naturist magazines, namely Health and Efficiency. This can be seen in your last issue, page 14 of no. 109 June 1984 and the previous issue on page 21, where the couple appears in the Health and Efficiency publication.

Nearly all of your issues have at least one or two photographs which appear in other publications, or are not taken in New Zealand.

This being a magazine which promotes naturism in New Zealand, should not the photographs published be of New Zealand naturists, both young and old, or from our near-neighbours in Australia and the Islands?

I would also like to comment on the subject which has received a lot of attention, namely the subject of hair or no hair.

I go naked whenever possible and I also shave off all of my unwanted hair, including my pubic hair. I am not ashamed of it and feel it is a natural thing to do, because I shave off all of my other body hair. I feel it is up to the individual whether she or he shaves off their pubic hair. It is their decision and no-one else's. If others do not like it or find it offensive, they do not have to look at it.

Yours faithfully
Cherie Hughes

Editors note:

Where possible, the photographs in NZN are taken in New Zealand. Unfortunately due to the lack of local photographic material available to us, we must rely on overseas suppliers.
