GUEST EDITORIAL

The Winds of Change

There is no doubt that things are slowly changing. Overseas reports indicate that attitudes in Greece, Spain, and Italy are changing. Public nudity is not as risky a business as it was last year, nudist clubs are appearing in Spain and Italy. In our own countries, more and more people each year are using Free Beaches, club memberships are growing, and additional nudist holiday resorts are being established.

Attitudes towards life and what is important in it, are also changing with the growing realisation that it is the quality of life that really counts.

In our clubs and on our beaches we are privileged to associate with people, and to see our children growing up free of the constraints imposed by false modesty and muddle headed thinking, with respect for themselves, others and the natural environment.

In a world that is filled with greed, suspicion, cruelty and a senseless destruction of the natural environment, Nudism must surely represent a much needed breath of sanity.

We must do all we can to keep the winds of change blowing in the right direction.

INTERVIEW WITH I.N.F. VICE PRESIDENT

ALAN McCOMBE

Interviewer: John H. Gilmour

MIKE GANLEY: Editor "N.Z. Naturist"

RAY WOOLHOUSE: Business Manager "N.Z. Naturist"

RON RENCHER: President N.Z.N.F.

ANDREW ALVES: P.R.O. Wellington Sun Club Inc.

Mike: What do you think of SPAN? (South Pacific Australasian Naturists)

Alan: A long time ago I floated the idea that the INF ought to regionalise itself more because primarily most of the work it is doing is within Europe, because it is there it started, and it is there that the majority of the worlds nudists still are, I think. This is where, frankly, we have most of the international problems that the INF is being primarily responsible for, because there are so many nations there in one spot. If any regional organisation is going to serve some purpose, obviously it must have more than one country involved which sees it is going to do something for it. It's no good setting up an organisation to do nothing. If, there again, you can get your people together from distances to meet, and you have anything in common, then fair enough, but I think this could be done better within the framework of the INF than pulling out of it to form a southern hemisphere.

John: When you say that most of the problems come to you from the European countries, this will be because the European countries have come to you with their problems. Australasia and outside Europe, possibly North America, South America, haven't come to you with their problems, so it doesn't mean to say that the European countries have had most problems.

Alan: No, I don't think it is, yes. We hear much more about them obviously because all but one of the present central committee are from Europe. They all come from federations that know what is going on locally, and we always see what is nearest our noses first.

John: As far as Australasia is concerned the only thing we get from INF is the travel benefits, we are going to go to Europe so if we get an INF passport we've got some advantage. But there are many other ways surely that the INF can help the AND and NZNF.

Alan: Yes.

John: Therefore the reason we haven't been getting value for our money is that we haven't applied to you for this sort of help, can you give us some example of how you can help us?

Alan: I think the main thing we are going to do in any case is to act as a clearing house. In other words if you've got a problem the I NF is probably not going to be able to help you themselves so much probably as another federation that has been in the same boat and has found the answer.

But we do know what has been going on everywhere else and if you've got a particular problem well we usually turn round and say "yes we've seen this before the Dutch, or the Danish, or somebody or other has done it and this is what happened and this is how it worked out." We have the finger on the pulse and we have got some idea what's going on. Having said that, I think there is a lot of things we are doing that people don't realise are going on, judging from what I have learned talking to a few people here.

Things which generally publicise naturism such as the press prizes. A thing which we have toyed with the idea of doing, but haven't done yet in any way is produce some sort of general "Shell" brochure on naturism. It would be rather expensively printed to the extent that no individual federation would be interested in doing it. Lots of colour pictures and so on. Which could then be overprinted in black with the working in any appropriate language from Swahili onwards, sort of thing, for use in any country. Some of the major federations in Europe have done this on their own part, but nobody has done it well enough to make it worth while doing. That's two of the things, obviously we can help out with things like disputes between federations. There aren't many, but you get cases where one federation is accused of poaching members from another one, this has happened in believe it or not a most gentlemanly way, but it has happened nevertheless, between England and Ireland. It has happened in a much more ungentlemanly way between the Americans and the Canadians.

John: When you say poaching members you mean poaching member clubs rather than individual members.

Alan: I mean individual members. You see the trouble in Ireland, was that the Irish in the interests of United Ireland, or whatever, thought that the best thing was to set up an Irish naturist association which covered both north and south. CCBN originally had members in Northern Ireland and had quite a few members in Eire as well who were there already and the Irish always felt that they should involve the lot and the CCBN should hand them over. This year they have finally done so and now the people in the north are saying we do not wish to belong to a foreign naturist association with it's headquarters in Dublin, we want to stay British and that is the Irish tragedy in a nutshell, I think. As far as we were concerned, this was set up jointly by the north and the south and there were plenty of people in Belfast who founded it, and that's the end of it as far as we are concerned.

John: The best way we can get any thing out of the INF is to be part of it rather than to be way away from it and just ask for help.

Alan: Yes.

John: What is required of a local man and what would his title be and how would he be appointed if we wanted somebody to represent Australasia in the INF?

Alan: That's a difficult one to answer because in theory nobody in the INF represents anywhere. I was nominated by CCBN for office, I was elected by everybody unanimously because they though I was a likely candidate but otherwise, you know, I was elected by a majority vote on the first occasion. I was elected equally by Australia and New Zealand and by everybody else, and I am responsible to them all. lam responsible to the congress who elected me, and I have to report back to the next congress as to what I did.

John: But if you are representing us as well you can't come to us too frequently.

Alan: No.

John: Then how do we get full representation from you, what should we do?

Alan: Well, all we can do most of the time of course is to keep in contact by post.

John: So do we need a particular man handling our affairs with the INF such as our Public Relations Officer?

Alan: This is a good idea frankly if you can. The Americans have done this for some years, appointed somebody as official INF representative, which is a particular title of theirs. I think it's the wrong title frankly. He represents them at congress and until he gets thrown out, which has happened rather too often, he has the responsibility as a sort of foreign secretary or delegate to the United Nations.

John: What would your opinion of his title be - INF correspondent?

Alan: Yes. Which is rather different from what we've got. You see, we've got what we call corresponding members in countries like Russia, Brazil and Ecuador, the countries where there is the odd naturist but no federation. Most of these countries have got a corresponding member who we keep fed with whatever information there is, he is there as a contact man who will tell us what the local situation is and, in theory at any rate, will represent us in any dealings with the national body and national organisations.

John: You mentioned a press prize, can you tell us something about that?

Alan: Yes,what we are doing, and have done ever since I can remember at any rate, is we award three prizes a year, the top one being at the moment somewhere around $300, $150 and $75 for the best article in a non-naturist publication or the best radio or television broadcast.

John: This is American dollars presumably.

Alan: No, New Zealand dollars (It has since come to our attention via INF press bulletin that the prizes are 600, 400 and 200 Swiss francs respectively).

John: How do we go about that, do you see the programmes and articles, or do we have to submit them to you?

Alan: You submit what we haven't heard about.

John: To whom?

Alan: To the INF Secretary in Antwerp. The Second Vice President is responsible for dealing with it at the moment because he is also P.R.O.

John: The important thing about this is that it is publicity and public relations.

Alan: Yup!

John: If the press got hold of the fact that the Nudist "Access" programme had won a world prize...

Alan: When was it?

Alan: Ah, so it is still eligible then, you see this is the point, we are talking about what happened in 1979, if it was before its out. There are some problems with distance of course and I will bring this up before somebody else does, and that is the "INF Guide" We've had complaints, which I've echoed very loud, that from the more distant places the questionnaire goes out and by the time they get it it is a month after the reply date anyway, and you're printing information which was in the last guide.

John: Do you think the "INF Guide" would be better published in a series of continental guides rather than in an international one?

Alan: Nobody has thought of it I must admit.

John: What is the point of NZ people going to Australia having to buy the "INF Guide" for $7.00 just to get the Australian clubs. The other alternative of course is to make it a loose leaf one and each year for a dollar or so get the updated pages.

Alan: It's a thought, nobody's ever thought of it before, certainly nobody's ever though of regional editions before and yet that's a good one. The International Youth Hostels Association have done that for the same reason.

John: The people who draw these things up, have they got any technical expertise or are they the same thing as the NZNF and the ANF just a pack of amateurs doing the best they can?

Alan: Unfortunately I think your suggestion is the correct one, the present editor is a Belgian ex oil company executive now retired, a meticulous man who is usually pretty good at accuracy and so on but not as good on presentation.

John: No technical expertise.

Alan: No, he relies very much on the publishers. The publishing is done by an organisation who are a very big firm both in the Netherlands and to a certain extent in Britain.

John: We are not getting our money's worth because we are not asking for it?

Alan: Yup, this is one thing, and the other thing of course is that any voluntary organisation, you only get out of in proportion to what you put in.

John: This is why it would be good if we did have an lNF correspondent appointed onto our executive, who would chase you for information, for example, we are having trouble with our photographic rules can we have some advice?

Alan: Yup.

John: We are having trouble with inter-club visits can we have some advice? Then you can send us the details of what all the different clubs have done, their experience of what worked and what didn't.

Alan: Yes - I think the type of things you can ask help with is for instance, one of our federations has just asked "What is a person covered for in the question of insurance when visiting a club in another country". You see, the Dutch insist, this is Dutch law, that anybody camping must be covered for third party insurance in case he burns the place down. Some people's national membership does include that as a benefit of membership, but not all, so people are happily going in with an INF passport into one or another countries saying "Look here is my INF card I'm insured". If you've got an international camping card, yes, it does cover you specifically for that, but ours, we never ever really thought of that so now we are doing a bit of inquiry to find out what people are covered for under various countries to try to lay down a minimum standard.

Ron: This brings up the biggest question I would say, supposing we were faced with a court case in which the costs were far beyond the resources of our organisation, would the INF come to the rescue?

Alan: I think it is hard to say frankly. So much would depend on what sort of case it was, so much would depend there again on what benefit it was going to be to anybody else. To put it crudely as you might say, the INF is by no means flush with money at the moment.

John: When you say benefit for anyone else you mean benefit to everyone else as far as nudism is concerned.

Alan: Yup, but I think the INF is more likely to be willing to help in an advisory capacity that in putting money into something like that.

John: Such as sending witnesses?

Alan: Yes, we have plenty of them, we've got plenty of lawyers in tow with experience in other countries law as such, but at least they know what other countries will let you get away with.

John: As the International Vice President representing us...

Alan: How did I get the position of representing you without your permission is that what you are going to ask?

John: No, but what sort of communication have you had with us apart from receiving our magazine and you sending out your circulars and press bulletins to us? There has been nothing so far has there?

Alan: With New Zealand, no, Because there hasn't been any approach, apart from the fact that I have talked to various NZ people that have come to congresses and such.

John: So any complaints we have about not getting value for money is our own fault because we haven come and bought it?

Alan: Yes. Though I wouldn't put it very hard on that mind you because possibly I should have done more like writing to the office and asking if you had any complaints.

John: Nudism is a world wide thing and yet it all seems to be centred around Europe, now Lionism is world wide and New Zealand has the world president this year, why doesn't nudism go further than Europe?

Alan: That's a good question, a difficult one to answer straight off, I think possibly because we are not in the same financial situation as either the Lions or the one I know more about, the Rotary. You see, we haven't got the sort of money to pay somebody to go across the world many times a year, nor frankly have we got the kind of members who are able and willing to give it that much priority in their life. You see, if you are top man in Lions or Rotary, you would see it as a great honour, your employers would see it as a great honour, your town would see it as a great honour.

Ron: You couldn't say this for nudism.

Alan: No, as it is at the moment, No.

John: All right, what do we do to correct that, we've got to get nudism a better image.

Alan: Yup.

John: Nationally and internationally, public relations?

Alan: Yes! Yes!

John: How can you help us there, advice and know- how?

Alan: And tell you what other people have done, yes.

John: If we could know what all the other people have done we could pick their brains, pick their ideas, and use them. Let me ask you now why do you prefer the word naturism to nudism?

Alan: Purely because as far as England is concerned, at any rate, nudist has got such a bad image which is why we got away from it, it may be said that it is being hypercritical to go for naturism because naturism has a sort of rub off that it has something to do with nature and natural environment.

John: You're not a dustman you are a refuse operator, you're not a nudist you're a naturist, its a euphemism?

Alan: Exactly, you are exactly quoting almost word for word a letter which I wrote to the Ordnance Survey in Britain. The maps of an area had Nudist Colony marked on them, I wrote to the Ordnance Survey Department asking them "Would you please remove nudist colony from the map, we prefer to be known either as naturist club or sun club but not nudist colony."

How about this club name for obscurity then, one that has just been started in England its the Noah's Ark Club, because you have to go in two by two, they do not accept single people.

Andrew: Speaking of which, how general is it in the UK that single people are barred from clubs?

Alan: Not nearly as common as it would seem most clubs have got single people in.

John: Now, the difference between single people and single men, how many clubs do not accept single men or have got a limit?

Alan: I think most clubs have got a limit but not many clubs will not accept them at all... How would you handle this one then, this came up in conversation in California, the club I was in had a couple of homosexuals living together in a caravan on club grounds.

John: I think that the sexual preferences of individuals are their own business as long as they do not try to convert or force their attentions on others. A lot of people seem to think that a homosexual will be chasing all the little boys around the club grounds, if that were so why does a heterosexual not chase all the little girls around the grounds.

Ron: There the rules of the club are that behaviour of members shall be above reproach.

Alan: Exactly, yes, yes.

Ray: About visitors, do you get many visits from your supporters scheme, are there any problems, because in 1980 we have got Mapua starting and there is a good chance a lot of their members will start off in nudism in this country through there and whether they are going to field them through the Free Beach Group or through a supporters scheme which somebody might start. Do you see the supporters scheme as a good scheme?

Alan: Yes, the big thing I think is the relationship between the supporters and the clubs, the crunch really comes I think, certainly in Britain that the clubs do not want extra members in most cases, in many cases they do not see the supporters as a means of recruitment. This is a pity, in France in particular where most of the clubs are expanding at all costs they are only too delighted if people turn up on the off chance, often without prior warning at all but just turn up at the gate and say I am a supporter and I have a card, can I come in for the day, you pay your day visit fee and you're in and you can come and do that usually say three times and then they say "Oh you again, well you can't come in again unless you join our club and that will be so much".

Alan: I think most do, apart from the French who run a green list because they think it sounds better. CCBN doesn't run a black list, it runs what they call a reference list. All they are saying is, if you get approaches from these people or that person about membership we advise you to contact us first from then on you make up your own minds, you may say that what this club threw this person out for was not adequate for you to ban them from your club.

John: Can you tell us anything about other countries attitudes regarding consumption of alcohol in clubs, what countries do not allow it.

Alan: The ones who don't look favourably on it are roughly half of Switzerland and half of Holland, will not allow it in any format any cost. The National Nudist Council of America ditto. The French on the other hand could not possibly conceive of a club without a bar. The French... will say alcohol forbidden but what they mean is spirits is forbidden but wine and beer is all right because they are nonalcoholic within their terms of reference. Most of the German clubs I have been to have a bar selling mainly beer mind you. In Britain I suppose I know of about three or four who have full time regular bars. Most clubs these days will have a special licence for bars at functions, and things like that.

John: As far as my knowledge goes this is a first for New Zealand, having an INF official visit us.

Alan: Yes.

Mike: So we have got to wait another thirty years before we see another INF official?

Alan: No! I think we are becoming a lot less European minded, the first real break came, I think, when the American trip came off two years ago. Frans Mollaert and I both went, I think I was very lucky to get in on that, I only went along because at that time Frans' English wasn't very good.

John: What effort is the INF making to get more public acceptance of nudism like combining with other national organisations like camping clubs and tramping clubs?

Alan: Internationally we haven't done very much its true. We belong to the international federation of associations, I can't think of it but there is an international body which in theory links together all international associations of any standing. We are listed in their directory which is a massive volume which lists every interest under the sun. We've had a certain amount of contact with the International Youth Hostel Association, largely as I have said at the time we were trying to restructure ourselves from a money point of view, and we and they were dealing with the problem of dealing with people who were dealing with international travel and they seemed to be the most likely people to be involved.

Otherwise we haven't done very much because we have left this at national level.

Can I come back for a moment to this business about contact with other bodies because this is the thing we are working on at the moment in England. In France they have got this off to a fine art because the French have always worked on the principle of having a membership card with a stamp on it. Two of the French camping clubs are now running their own naturist sites.

John: Anything that even mentions nudism as incidental is good publicity because it makes it look like a normal everyday thing.

Alan: Yup, exactly, yes.

John: I have one question which may sound silly on the surface, but have the INF made any efforts or any approaches to try and get at least the water sports at the Olympic Games played in the nude?

Alan: Yes, we did have a go, but with tongue in cheek, because the East Germans asked for this last time didn't they? It didn't get pushed very far at the time, certainly, largely because we had a PRO at the time who believed in stunts and he wanted to add to the list of freedoms and kept going to the United Nations for freedom to go without clothes and made himself look rather silly.

John: Well the thing with the Olympic Games of course is that it would not have to be compulsory but any competitor who felt he could compete better nude should be permitted to do so and even if we do not achieve this the fact that it was asked in a serious manner and the fact that is was considered at all adds a touch of respectability to nudism internationally.

Alan: Yes, yes. The East Germans were training in the nude, we know, and they asked for it but were turned down.

John: So if the East Germans asked for it and we supported them it would give us good publicity.

Alan: Oh yes, I know, yes. I think the answer would be, to be fair on this one they would turn round and say we are not interested in the fastest you can o but the fastest you can go under the handicaps you've got such as wearing a costume. You might as well say we would like to allow competitors in the 100km walk to take both feet off the ground at once if they want to.

John: They may argue that but we can still ask them because it would not be adverse publicity.

Alan: Yes. It has been tried but as I way we did not push it very hard. Certainly not as hard as it could have been.

What was interesting was that the 76 Congress was held in Germany at the same time as the Olympics, I suggested that we have the next one in Montreal because we could then profit by all the cheap fares and charter flights that were going there because after all we have a certain amount in common.

Mike: Yes, that's a good idea, for in that way the INF becomes truly international and goes right around the world, and Melbourne is proposed for the next games.

John: Well, what's wrong with holding nudist Olympics at the same time.

Ray: Yes, the Paraplegics do it don't they?

Alan: In Germany they held nude sports and a Television company ran an hour long broadcast of it in peak viewing time, no holds barred, because the Germans don't have any hang-ups on this kind of thing. It was extremely good value.

Mike: Well Alan, on behalf of the "New Zealand Naturist" and the New Zealand Nudist Federation, I would like to thank you for the time you have given. I'm sure the answers to our questions will be of interest to our readers.

1979/80 NZNF NATIONAL RALLY

OR
"THE 2nd CAPITAL CITY TRIENNIAL SWIM-IN"

What can one say, by way of compensation, to so many visitors from so many parts of New Zealand, for the weather that was inflicted on them during the tail end of 1979 and the first three days of the New Year at "Fiveacres"; or to those members of the Wellington Sun Club who laboured long and hard to have the grounds and amenities in top order for the RaIly?

For the first time ever, the outdoor sports programme, with the exception of tennikoits, was uncompleted. Conditions were so cold and wet over the closing stages of the Rally, and the state of the ground so bad, that the organisers reluctantly abandoned all post-section play in the volleyball and also some eleven miniten matches. The "ring-slingers" were luckier, their final tenikoit games being played off on a jury-rigged court inside the clubhouse.

Once again, this building proved it's worth, providing a haven of dryness in a sea of water and mud and a secure venue for a wide variety of alternative activities. The mind boggles at the thought of trying to run films, dances, or even table tennis, under canvas in the conditions prevailing.

By delaying the official opening of the Rally until afternoon of the first day the organisers were able to take advantage of the arrival of a distinguished guest from overseas, one of the Vice Presidents of the INF, Alan McCombe. Showing little evidence of his long hours of flying, the visitor from England officially inaugurated the Rally, pointing out during his speech that events such as this, on a national scale, were almost unique in the nudist world discuss INF matters with Commonwealth members of the Federation. Alan enjoyed our hospitality for three days before crossing the Tasman to "Bush-Fire Land".

Statistics fiends will not find much here to get their teeth into but here are a few tidbits... 114 registered camp sites, the majority of them with electric power; over 200 cubic feet of candy floss sold; 720 bread rolls used for hot dogs or filled rolls; over 200 slices of bread for toasted sandwiches and literally hundreds of packets of assorted potato crisps. Wet we may have been, but far from starved!!

New Year was ushered in by a really good live band that rocked the rafters into the early hours and a supper that out-lasted the appetites even of the three hundred or so revellers.

Apart from the traditional concert and a screening of last year's rally in Christchurch, the remaining evenings of the meeting can be summed up in two words... "Dennis' Disco". For Dennis himself this entailed a non-stop round trip home to New Plymouth to collect the gear, and three late nights of music, for only the cost of the petrol. And... Boy, was it worth it! If there's a better mobile disco around, WE haven't seen it! Without a doubt, this was one of the things that helped keep a smile on people's faces in spite of the weather. Thanks, Dennis!

Lastly... those visitors who squelched their way out of the grounds after the Rally might like to know that six days later the biggest problem was DUST! Verily, the perfidy of the gods is unbelievable at times! Anyway, we thank you for your tolerance and good humour under trying circumstances and hope you fared better for the rest of the summer.

Ia femme - Ia naturiste

She descends the dunes in the early hours
asking only her share of the world,
that share which is hers by birthright.
The breeze is offshore, gentle and warm.

Gulls wheel and cry out their approval
as she stands,
poised
to shed her worldly trappings.
First shafts of morning gold tint her hair
she discards he blouse and skirt.
She feels closer to herself,
and the sweet air is closer to her.

She needs no more than life has given her
to revel in life itself.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
but all eyes no matter what finite culture or creed
look with eternal nature's sight.
And when nature looks upon itself,
there can only be seen beauty.
And so it is that with her smile she betrays our
insecurities,
and with her good heart she pities them.
For when one's thoughts are honest, one can only
perceive honesty.

Be not shy to be proud of your femaleness.
You are the essence of natural beauty in its human
form.
You are man's complement, inspiration and comfort.
You are your own. You are a woman.

The heat of the day is past.
You oil your brownness walking along the shoreline,
your feet mingling with the sand.
The wind is onshore now, cool and reassuring.
Its strength outlines your body's warmth and breathes
through your hair.
You enclose your body back
into the folds of social acceptance.

Yet you need no more than life has given you
to know life itself.

FRIENDSHIP

E.R. Kavanagh

So, you are a naturist, or, if you prefer, a nudist. I often wonder whether we really appreciate what this means. We join a club, where we spend one or two days each week if we are fortunate and can arrange the time between the multiplicity of other callings we have on those few hours. The freedom from clothing and the enjoyment we find among many new, and sometimes, old friends who share our views, make those hours very enjoyable, and something to look forward to next week. Occasionally we may visit another club, and so make our family of friends a little larger. "Yes", you say, "this is what being a member means to me." I thought this also, but now know how little I really appreciated what I had. My membership had admitted me to a world-wide group of all nationalities, creeds and colour, among whom I could find many friends if I wished or had the opportunity to so do. Even travelling about my own country, I could visit other clubs throughout the breadth of the land, and know that I would find a warm welcome there. Not all of us, of course, have the chance to leave our homeland, and travel to some other country, but those of us who do, have a marvellous opportunity presented to us. How grand it is to be met and welcomed by folk we have never previously met. It is nice to visit a new land, and see the natural glories which every land has, but it can be a lonely visit without friends to share our joy. It is not the country we remember for years to come, but the people with whom we communicated, and swapped yarns of our homes and people. Anyone can meet and talk to people in all sorts of places. We part, and probably will never see them again. However, I have found that the friends I have made in the nudist movement in other lands have remained my friends. they know that they are welcome, at any time, in my home, and I trust, that I am welcome in their homes.

It has been my privilege to visit other clubs in several states of Australia, and also in New Zealand, and have made many very good friends, with whom I correspond or visit whenever possible. I am not an out-going person, and have always found difficulty in approaching people and making friends. Since I have become a nudist, this has been much easier, as I find that I am accepted for myself, and not for what I may possess, or for what I look like. We receive from the movement only what we put into it, whether it be time, money, effort, help, or just plain friendship. I was once told a very good philosophy of life - read it and remember it!

"Life is a wheel, studded with pegs, upon which we must, perforce, place our gifts, as it rotates slowly before us, whether these gifts be good or bad. Later in life, as the wheel completes the full circle, we must remove our gifts - AND, they have doubled in value. If our gift was good, then we will receive good in return. If our gift was bad, or we caused hurt or injury to another, we will be treated similarly."

Stop, and think about this for a moment, and cast your mind back over even the last few years, and you will realise just how true this is. We do not help another in order to gain benefit for ourselves, but, it will surely be repaid, possibly in an entirely different manner. So also with the other side of the coin. In offering friendship to fellow nudists, we will find friendship returned to us, and soon find that we are members of a vast happy family. I leave you with this thought -

Other nudists are friends we have not yet met.

AUSTRALIAN CONVENTION REPORT
Mike Severs, Secretary

The 11th ANF Convention and Sports Rally was held at Bangalee Nudist Holiday Village in Victoria and was the biggest convention ever - 2,500 people attended. It was thus fitting that this was the first convention to be attended by a representative of the INF executive, Mr Alan McCombe, First Vice President of the INF.

The sporting side of the Convention was hotly contested as always, and Helios emerged as winner of the Sandy McDonald Club of the Year Trophy. New Zealand won the Tasman Shield. In another first for this year a new game was introduced to the Convention - petanque - a bowling game from France. Hellos won that too!

At the delegates meeting, Bernard Mentink was re-elected as Vice President and Mike and Rosemary Severs were elected as ANF Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.

Positions of ANF Editor and Public Relations Officer were established, and the meeting also established ANF representatives in each State and Territory, to improve communication within the movement. The delegates passed a number of motions this year which will have far-reaching effects on the Australian nudist scene. The delegates supported the concept of SPAN, and authorised the ANF to enter into discussion with the NZNF and other regional nudist organisations regarding the scheme. The A.C.T. Club withdrew its motion recommending that Australia withdraw from the INF, and the meeting agreed that we will stay in the INF, and pay the per capita fee required. Affiliation fees to the ANF will also be on a per capita basis.

In another forward-looking move, the meeting endorsed the ANF proposal to set up the supporter scheme. After the meeting there was a rush to buy supporter membership, because everyone wanted to be supporter number one in their state! Supporter members will be able to visit those clubs which support the scheme, at times determined by each club, and they will also receive a copy of the New Zealand Naturist with a special insert "The Supporter News", produced by the ANF Editor.

Another Club, the Southern United Naturists (SUN) from South Australia, affiliated with the ANF, bringing the total to 27 clubs.

It was agreed that the next ANF Convention will be held at ROSCO in N.S.W. The meeting also agreed that in future every adult who attends an ANF convention will pay a once-only levy of $1 to the ANF. This will boost the funds of the ANF, and enable it to do more for its affiliated clubs and for the promotion of nudism generally.

It was a noticeably happy, harmonious Convention, and perhaps this helps explain way so much was achieved. For this we must thank Brigitte, Manfred, Frank and Petra, the proprietors of Bangalee, and the many people who helped them to make the Convention such a success.

A.N.F. SUPPORTER MEMBERSHIP
Mike Severs

Delegates to the 11th ANF Convention endorsed ANF recommendations to set up a supporter scheme in Australia. This will operate along similar lines to those discussed at the 16th World Congress in Britain, and now operating in many overseas countries. In fact most nudist federations now boast a sizeable "supporter" membership.

The supporter scheme recognises that there are a number of people who are interested i the nudist movement, but for geographical or other reasons either cannot or do not wish to join a club. Such people can now become supporters of the nudist movement. They will be able to visit clubs that support the scheme, either on special "supporter days", or at other times decided by each club. They will receive an ANF card stamped "SUPPORTER", and they will receive quarterly copies of the New Zealand Naturist enclosing a special "Supporter NEWS" produced by the ANF Editor, giving details of supporter activities around Australia.

The annual subscription will be $8 er family for members of ANF affiliated clubs, or $12 per family for non members. If you d like to become a supporter, or would like more information on the scheme, write to

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Mike,

The A.N.F. has by an almost unanimous decision of Australian club delegates introduced a new scheme to the Australian Nudist Movement.

It is designed for supporter members, it will be of great benefit to not only non-club members but club members as well. It is a system that will bring nudism out of the dark secretive ages. It will help the beach nudists gain legal free beaches. It will help clubs gain members plus increased finance through supporter visits and the supporter will benefit also.

It should be the aim of all nudists to promote nudism as a healthy way of life for all, whether you belong to a club, beach group or practice nudism in your home.

Get behind this scheme, it will work for everyone of us.

Support the Supporter, the cost is light, the future bright!

Peter Beerens

Dear Mike,

In Issue 92, mention was made by John North about a sport called Petanque or Petonque. I hope I am not to late in giving you the results of my enquiries.

It is played by the French and is sounded with the que as cork. The Italians also play it but they call it Baroc. It is a type of bowls, players stand at one end, a little white ball a little bigger than a table tennis ball is thrown to the other end. The players then throw under arm balls about the size of a baseball, the idea is to get as close as possible to the small white ball.

I hope John North finds the information helpful. The game need not be played on level ground, in fact, uneven ground makes the players be even more skillful.

Neil Drummond

Dear Mike,

As a visitor from overseas I would like to express my gratitude to the reception I received at the N.Z.N.F. Rally at Wellington.

As you know, the weather was wet most of the time, and at one stage I was washed out, my tent being under 50mm of water.

My special thanks must go to Walter and Olive of the Wellington Sun Club who lent me another tent for the duration of the Rally.

At the concert, during one scene it was stated that this Aussie is only 4ft tall. I would like to correct this as I am a gigantic 5ft tall. The reason for the 4ft statement, was because the compere is so tall. He was looking down on me from a great height and was confused.

the concert itself was great entertainment. First class, followed by films from the Canterbury Rally which brought back fond memories of another enjoyable Rally.

Since arriving I have made many new friends and with luck, next year will meet again to renew our friendship.

All I can say is a big thank you New Zealand for a fair dinkum holiday.

John Andrews
Good Companions, Queensland.

Dear Sir,

My wife and I both read your excellent Magazine and have found it a great help whilst travelling and seeking accommodation.

We were very interested to see the paragraph in your latest issue inviting interested parties to correspond with each other. Both my wife and myself are very interested in hearing from others who are interested in the same subjects as ourselves. I.E. Naturism, natural foods, fishing and in general the healthy outdoor life.

Our personal details are as follows: we were able to give up our business interests and retire a little earlier than most, thus enabling us to enjoy the nudist way of life to the full. In addition we grow all our own vegetables and herbs by organic means, preserve all our fruit etc, spend a lot of our time beach fishing (Nude of course). We have travelled the Asian countries fairly extensively since retirement paying particular attention to the simple eating and cooking methods of the village people in the various countries.

We are very interested in people, their lifestyles, especially those who have opted out from "junk" foods and are finding health in natural living. We will endeavour to answer any letters received.

All the best for future publications of your magazine.

Jack C. Freak

Dear Mike,

Through your column I would like to thank the Wellington Club Organisers and Workers of the N.Z.N.F. National Rally for putting on such a splendid effort.

The fact that there were only two days of sunshine during the Rally, with no serious grumbles and everyone leaving with a smile showed that their efforts were not in vain.

They shouldn't be too disheartened about their bad weather, it just could not happen three times in a row, so we all look forward to their next Rally.

Ray Woolhouse

Dear Mike,

The Australian Nudist Convention and Sports Rally at Bangalee was a tremendous success for all that attended.

The sporting and social events all went like clockwork. There were an estimated 2,500 people from all over Australasia and further afield in attendance for the duration of the convention. It is the largest gathering of nudists I have ever seen and it was marvellous to see how they all got on so well together. I feel that this convention will be a trend- setter for all future conventions in Australia.

To the owners of Bangalee Frank, Manfred, Brigetta and Petra, on behalf of our members that attended we thank you and your members for a truly fantastic time. To all the new friends we made there, we look forward to seeing you again at Rosco, Newcastle for the next convention.

Sunshine Families

Dear Mike,

For some years I have tried to have the game of Petanque (Jeu de boules) accepted on the Sporting agenda of our Convention Rallies. At the last convention, held at the Three Bears in Queensland, we finally succeeded.

Petanque is a bowling game of immense popularity in France. The great advantage is that it can be played by 2 to 4 people, anywhere at anytime. You do not need a court for it. I will enclose a complete description of the game and its rules.

In France people of all ages play it. Wherever you travel especially in Southern France, you will see small groups of people in parks, in front of village shops (while Madame does the shopping) or along the roads. In fact they play it travelling from one village to the next, calling in at various wayside 'taverns. Its main feature is that it can be played on any surface - sand, gravel, grass, among the trees, on cobblestones etc. Once a round is started nothing must be removed from the playing area. The balls therefore must stand up to fairly harsh treatment. Only the best quality (of the amateur series) should be bought. Sometimes inferior quality 'boules' will heavily dent or even crack open. We found that the brand "La Meridionale" "Boules Eclair", are of excellent quality. Needless to say that people who do not want to go into strenuous sport but nevertheless want to be physically active, enjoy the game tremendously.

If more information is required I will be only too pleased to communicate further with you on this matter. I have a contact address in Europe which supplies us with the equipment. A set of 8 Boules (standard number) cost approx. $55.00 freight incl. I trust that for the moment John's curiosity has been satisfied.

Love and peace in the sun.
Bernard Mentink.
Vice Pres. A.N.F.

Dear Sir,

Re Maslins Beach S.A. 15 acres

As the nudist in Australia seem to be lax and or coupled with secrecy which makes me doubt their sincerity along with no answer of address of the Australian Nudist Federation I thought I would write to you in the hopes of obtaining prospective shareholders to help purchase and hold this unique block for nudists of the world.

It is the only beach front block of land available fronting a nudist beach having direct access and the price is only $39,500 even though fully utilised it will be worth $500,000 to $100,000 for people interested in good health and longevity and can afford to stay at a Hotel/Motel built to world standards and for tourism.

But the first thing to do is to secure the block before it is sold to someone unsympathetic to the nudist cause.

I would be prepared to place $2,000, we need ten others with similar amounts and borrow the remainder and repay $4.00 per week until development takes place.

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to inform you of a new international naturists' contact and friendship agency, Internaturists Bureau, which I propose to introduce in 1980.

Thus, I would be pleased if you could devote space to this item - in a forthcoming issue, of each language edition, of your magazine.

The bureau will enable individual naturists and families, of all countries, to correspond on a worldwide basis. Ultimately, this will, hopefully, lead to exchange club visits, joint holiday projects, etc.

All naturists, who reply to the bureau, will receive a membership card and free, quarterly newsletters. (English language). Should this scheme prove to be a success, I envisage a yearly convention, also.

There will be no membership fee, but contributions to postage costs through I.R.C's will be welcomed.

Respondents should state which nationalities they wish to contact and list languages spoken.

The address for further information, is:

Yours sincerely,

NATIONAL NUDIST RESORT
(Hot Springs Purchasing Trust)

In the last six months we have signed a purchase agreement to buy 21.5 acres of the thermal country in the Central North Island to set up a clothing optional nudist resort.

Documents have been prepared to apply for a change of use for the property and will have been submitted by the time this is printed. When the change has been granted it will only be a matter of months before roading has been completed and development of the resort will commence.

Shareholders investments are enough to purchase the property, but more is needed to develop the resort. To this end, an invitation is extended to other interested people to invest in this project. Existing shareholders are also invited to increase their shareholding in multiples of $100 on the condition that each person has only one vote at any shareholders meeting.

When the purchase is completed all shareholders will be notified by newsletter.

N.Z.N.F. OFFICERS REPORTS

Secretary Les Wellington.

The 22nd Annual General Meeting of the N.Z. Nudist Federation was held at 'Fiveacres' the grounds of the Wellington Sun Club, on Saturday 29 December 1979, one day before the National Rally commenced.

Delegates representing most of the Clubs were in attendance backed up by a large number of observers.

Items of importance, or interest, in the 5 hour meeting included the following:

1) Presentation of reports by the officers, and the adoption of the annual statement of accounts.

2) Acceptance of the INF membership card system with effect from the 1980/81 year on terms acceptable both to the INF and the NZNF.

3) An increase in the club subscription to the NZNF to meet increased day to day costs faced by the Federation.

4) Amendments to the Rules to allow for Associate members to have a proportional vote at Council meetings. This is of immediate benefit to the Free Beach Group Inc.

5) Alterations to the Official Rally Photographic by-laws which will allow for the publication of photos taken during rallies to be released where attendees wear white tags, no other permission being required.

6) The Secretary to enter into discussions with the Australian Nudist Federation during the next twelve months on the SPAN proposal put forward by A.C.T. Club.

P.R.O. REPORT
John Groen.

From the reports we received on the Open Weekend (Nov 25 & 26,1979) we can safely draw the conclusion that it was successful. Many clubs have gained new members, which in some smaller clubs meant a large percentage.

As far as I found out, the weather was on our side right through the country. I believe, that even Wellington saw that unfamiliar phenomenon, the Sun, right through the weekend. It has not been seen since, I am told.

For the next summer we hope again to organise a National Open Weekend. This time we will have to rely solely on local advertising. The last Sunday in November is now officially World Naturist Day for the Southern Hemisphere. (The Northern Hemisphere will stick to the last Sunday before the Northern winter.)

What better way to celebrate our "Anniversary" than by offering our hospitality to everyone, on this last weekend in November (29 & 30). As a movement we have now truly come into the open. We must guard not to slip back into obscurity again. Newcomers to nudism frequently comment on the friendliness and relaxed atmosphere they find, when they make contact with any club. In a time when people are becoming more and more aggressive, this is a very strong point in our favour. Still, the best publicity for nudism is a happy nudist. If you are in the position to discuss the good of sun clubs with non-nudists, don't be scared, tell them.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC.

Well we are now well into summer and the Bay of Plenty Sun Club has been very busy once again. Although we did not have many at the rally this year, our grounds have seen many members and visitors camping over the holiday period. The New Year was seen in, amidst an incredible thunderstorm, but this did not dampen the spirits at all and the hot tub, which has been a great success this year, was well used by everyone after the party. The hot tub has been in operation every night, the children using it first and then the adults having their soak afterwards and it has certainly proven to be an asset to the club. We saw a number of visitors returning, via our grounds, after the rally and were lucky enough to be able to provide some sought after sun, much to the relief of our visitors. A smorgasbord tea was organised at a local hotel one night for our visitors and a birthday celebration was held in the form of a champagne breakfast complete with venison steaks for our secretary's birthday. Our newly laid miniten court has also been well used throughout the summer and a full shop was in operation and provided the campers with all the necessities without having to travel into town. Two trips to a local beach provided our own Free beach days and gave our visitors a taste of the lovely coastline along the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Some people visited, a local harbour and provided mussels, pipis and cockles for the barbeque. All those who have passed through have certainly had a good time and many have decided to call back again. A large number have joined as country members. This kind of spirit shows what the Nudist movement is all about and we welcome visitors to our grounds all year round, to share the sun and hospitality at the B.O.P.S.C.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Our summer got off with a bang this season, with a Guy Fawkes B.B.Q. and bonfire in November, which also cleared the grounds of a lot of rubbish and fallen branches.

By the beginning of December our pool and grounds were looking spruce and ready for National Open Weekend. We also had our adult christmas party on the Saturday night of Open Weekend and our children's party on Sunday afternoon. This way our many guests were able to join in on our festivities and we hired a disco for their entertainment. It was a most successful weekend and the weather was beautiful, catching a few people unawares, as was witnessed by the reddened bodies at the weekends finish.

We are now looking forward to our club Open Weekend in February and visitors' weekend 15th and 16th March and we hope to see lots of visitors from other clubs then, and over the holiday season.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC.

Summer in Gisborne sees a great influx of visitors seeking their holiday sun on one of our numerous beaches. Our Club has its share of fellow nudists from other Clubs, camping and hopefully enjoying our facilities. Some visitors had come to Gisborne after the N.Z.N.F. Rally, held recently in Wellington, and shared their impressions with local members who had also been to the Rally. Apart from the unfortunate weather, it was an experience not to have been missed.

Our new miniten court is proving to be a worthwhile addition I always believed the song "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" but now I must change that to "mad dogs and Nudists!" We are having an official opening of the court on Sunday, 17 February and I will report the outcome in the next issue.

Both the National Open Day and our own Open Day proved successful and eight new members were welcomed in December. Natural increases through births is also proving successful. One baby born to a member early in January with two more due within the next few months. Maybe it has something to do with the relaxing atmosphere generated with nudism!

The swimming pool is so popular with the children that we adults are thinking about putting in a pool for our own use! Seriously though, the grounds are especially lovely at the moment and it is a pleasure to be able to share our love of the sun in such pleasant surroundings.

SOUTHERN SUN AND HEALTH CLUB INC.

1979 was a very successful year for our Club.

Thanks to members' help we have gone forward in leaps and bounds, and as well as the basic facilities of water, electricity, ablution block/wash-house (including washing machine), cooking range, sleeping accommodation and social room, plus indoor table tennis, outdoors we now have a newly- completed concrete miniten court, swimming pool (para rubber type at this stage, but quite adequate for a dip and splash on hot days), a grass court for tenniquoits, a children's play area and a large barbeque and 'eating' area.

All these facilities were in full swing during the "Open weekend", both by club members and visitors to the grounds. The weekend itself was a big success all round - even the sun smiled down on us for the whole of the two days.

Guy Fawkes night was enjoyed by members and families from neighbouring farms. It was great sitting in the moonlight at midnight, enjoying a barbeque snack and cup of tea!

Our next big event was at the end of January when the local township of Otautau celebrated its centennial. We opened the grounds to the public and had a fair amount of visitors as many of the locals used to be pupils in the school which is now our club social room.

Best wishes to all for a very happy, sunny, and prosperous New Year.

CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC.

After many years of planning we finally managed to erect our new clubhouse. Once the foundations were down the treasurer soon started to receive money for debentures, which with hard work by the fund-raising department, paid for the whole of the building. It is 9 by 9 metres, and we call it stage one. The next stage of approx. the same size will be added as soon as more money comes available.

Like many other clubs we had a very successful National Open Weekend. Fifteen families were added to our membership within a fortnight. But most important, many other enjoyed one, in some cases two days, in healthy relaxation and good family fun for them in an unfamiliar but agreeable atmosphere. This was another step closer to acceptance of our lifestyle.

This year for the first time members were allowed to invite guests to our New Year's Eve celebrations at the club. Guests were allowed to spend the night plus the next day on the grounds, provided their host could provide sleeping facilities.

A bass-'n-beef was organised, and I'm told that it took till 5.30 a.m. to finish off the whole side of beef, that was cooked, roasted and barB-qued for the 169 party-goers.

Our local radio station, Radio Avon, will promote our next Open Day on February the 17th this year. With some serious promotion and lighthearted humour, people will be told about nudism in the days before the event, and will be invited to come and visit our grounds that Sunday. We are hoping for another great success.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

Well the 1979-80 rally is over and R.S.C. had its ups and downs. Some of our members got flooded out but we all enjoyed ourselves and are looking forward to the next national rally. We are to have a camp in late February and have invited the local country and western music club along so we should have a great evening around the fire.

We are going well with Orakei Korako having signed a purchase agreement and paid a deposit. By March we hope to have our bulldozer in cutting the road so that working bee's can be held over the winter months.

Call in and see us if you are in the central North Island this summer.

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

Having missed the last issue we would like you to catch up on what's happening at South Auckland.

We survived the most disastrous winter in our clubs history, but only just, and are still licking our wounds. The shock of our crumpled, almost completed 45 x 25ft pool was greeted with further disappointment upon finding our clubrooms fifteen inches deep in water. Thus destroying our fridge and freezer and damaging mowers, pool filters and numerous other odds and ends.

But at SANC we don't give in easily, with faithful hardworking members things are slowly getting back to normal.

To date further bad weather has prevented us from repairing the pool, but we are still hoping to have it completed before the end of summer.

The grounds are looking nice with our added attraction, a newly laid Miniten court (grass).

We have welcomed many new members this summer and it is only with the help of keen members that we live again and watch our club progress no matter what the set backs.

We welcome any members from other clubs passing through to call, have a barbeque, and hopefully have a swim in our completed beautiful pool.

MANAWATU SUNSEEKERS INC.

Well, here at the Manawatu Sunseekers, we have been mighty active, even though you have missed our reports in the last couple of issues. Over the summer months we have had several trips away as a Club to supplement our days and evenings after work at the grounds.

We have welcomed many new members into the Club following the National Open Day, which we also supplemented a week later, with a float in the Christmas Parade.

With all these new members, our newest addition to our club facilities is really getting plenty of use. Our Hot Spa pool was completed just prior to Christmas and we anticipate it will pamper us well into the winter.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST RANCH

At the time of writing, we are still recovering from a fantastic time at Bangalee. Nine units from Sunshine Families attended.

While in Victoria we took the opportunity to visit River Valley, Hellos, and Northside and we thank those clubs for their warm welcome.

We leave the sunny climes of Queensland to visit Rosco in New South Wales.

The next N.A.Q. Easter Social and Sports Convention is to be held at Sunleisure where Sunshine Families will be in full force to take away all those beaut trophies, so all those Queensland clubs had better get in some training.

Sunshine Families have started advertising on the big screen at the new Ipswich Cinema Theatre as from 22-12-79 for one year.

This is the first time that nudism has been advertised in this manner and through this medium in Australia and we are hoping for a good response.

NATURI SUN CLUB

The intriguing thing about "Naturi" is that it is people taking part. During the past month or two a record number of members have contributed their ability, time and effort with great enthusiasm. Our amenities block has had a face lift with a new coat of paint, a new tiled floor and new septic connections. An Ionic Steriliser System to our beautiful swimming pool has been installed, which controls algae and bacteria without using any chemicals, so preventing burning and itching skin or eyes and avoiding dangerous gases an unpleasant smell. Our electrician has been busy installing electricity to our camping area, and our Secretary has announced an influx of New Members. Our Christmas Dinner at the Leagues Club was enjoyed by a large number of members and proved a great success. Our Club's theme for this year is active engagement by members in the club. We hope to do this by having more sports days, barbeques and other weekend activities in our large tiled pool. A new pumping system is nearing completion, to pump water from one of the dams on the property to the club area, this will be a big help to keep our lawns and gardens beautiful in the drier weather, when our spring water is getting Low.

Potential nudists are invited to write to our Secretary, Box 11, Berowra. N.S.W. 2081, to arrange a visit. You can obtain an all over tan without the scorching sand and swim safely. There are caravans and a cabin to Iet, weekend, month or annual basis, at very reasonable cost to members. Please send a S.A.E. for a reply.

PACIFIC SUN CLUB NUDIST FARMLAND

The club is on the north side of Brisbane, a short drive not far from the large farming town of Caboolture, and close to the holiday fishing village of Donnybrook, which is on the passage to Bribie Island.

Our club is nestled in the middle of 200 acres of beautiful bush, ferns, gums, natives and cleared grassed areas. A tidal salt creek, and a sandy spit cleared and grassed is our main swimming area. There is also fishing, canoeing, and crabbing or exploring one of the three islands in the middle of the large wide sections of the creek.

For the sports minded there is a large grass flat area used for cricket, baseball, volleyball, basketball and miniten. For children there is a trampoline, swings, sandpit and nearer the hut is the barbeques.

A temporary shower has been made until the new block is completed, which has been delayed as the council have made us tile the floors and walls, but it is looking pretty flash.

There are plenty of campsites and bush walks through the trees and ferns on both sides of the creek with timber all around, perfectly screened and oh so peaceful. (Pacific, means peaceful).

CORIO VALLEY, VICTORIA.

Including children Corio had over fifty representatives at the 11th A.N.F. Convention - Sports Rally which was held in perfect weather conditions. The host club Bangalee are to be applauded on their fine contribution - and now all plans are for the 12th event to be held on the new grounds of Rosco, situated north of Sydney south of Newcastle in New South Wales.

Corio sports captain Neil Young must be congratulated for his team organisation which resulted in our small club gaining two trophies - Junior Miniten and Senior Batington - plus runner up in the Club of the Year, being only three points behind Helios.

World Nudist Day for the Southern Hemisphere on February 10 was well advertised locally with the official opening of our pool by Mr Neil Trezise Member of Legislative Assembly, Shadow Minister for Youth Sport and Recreation. Local community leaders, media, and representatives from the Australian Nudist Federation; Nudist Association of Victoria and Victorian clubs combined with club members of Corio to make the day a memorable beginning for "Corio and nudism into the 1980's".

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB REPORT

The Club land saga has not quite reached its final stage yet, but we hope that by the time you read this the papers will be signed and the land will at last be ours. It has been advertised that a $16 million lion and animal park will be built right next door to us - if the Government is planning to solve its problems by feeding the nudists to the lions, at least they are doing it in style!

We have held two successful stalls at community festivals recently, including one at the "Life Be In It" Festival. These are a great opportunity to hand out promotional material, and raise some funds at the same time.

The new sealed road to Kambah Free Beach was completed in time for summer, and access is now much better. New walking tracks to the beach have also been provided.

A number of Club members attended the Convention at Bangalee, and had an enjoyable time renewing old friendships and making new ones. We also learned a new game, petanque, which could prove to be just the game for A.C.T. Nudist Club. We'll never be leaders in volleyball!

The Christmas festivities were very successful and well attended, especially the Club Christmas Dinner where old and new members got together to eat, drink and make merry in the traditional way. The "Waifs and Strays" party at Barbara's house on Christmas Day provided a nice Christmas for those with no family in Canberra. The nudist movement can often extend the hand of friendship like this, and we hope this feeling can be extended to promote more ties across the Tasman.

STATESIDE NEWS

YUCCA NATURIST CLUB

How many clubs can catch fish in their swimming pool. One of our members caught a 6lb twenty inch long fish, and it didn't get away! Our Halloween party was of moderate success, all those there thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Christmas Party was successful, Santa Claus took time out of his busy schedule to drop in and distribute pre Christmas presents to all the children.

Planning is underway for a Valentines Party so we have a rather full social calendar.

TASMAN SHIELD.

The KIWI's have it! Now the Aussie's must come to N.Z. to win it back!

As no direct representatives were at the Bangalee A.N.F. Convention -Sports Rally, the A.N.F. in consultation with the donors decided it would be fitting to get the Tasman Shield "launched" for the 1980's, so Kiwi's at convention presently living away from home were invited to register with the sports organisers.

What followed could not have been more appropriate and certainly displayed to all present that sport can still be played in light hearted and good humoured fun. That is an understatement.

The game selected was - you guessed - Volleyball.

The engraved shield has been mailed to the New Zealand Nudist Federation Secretary where it remains until Australia wins it back hopefully at the next New Zealand Rally in 1980- 81. The goodwill created by the first round can only continue to consolidate our liaison between Federations across the Tasman.

WHO'S WHERE

NEW ATTITUDE TO NUDE BATHING

The WHO'S WHERE project was the result of long correspondence with a Chichester lady who has enjoyed bathing naturally with her family in UK and abroad. Like thousands of other 'no fuss' bathers Mrs. Ironside knew very little about organised naturism until she bought FREE SUN.

The 'secrecy cult' is something Joan Ironside thinks very harmful - and finds difficult to understand. She wrote to ask for the names and addresses of any other Free Sun Friends nearby, with whom her daughter and herself could enjoy 'safety in numbers' sharing local but unofficial facilities listed in the book. As it happened a family from Worthing and two more couples in Chichester had written friendly letters here and a beach club seemed possible. The protocol of getting permission to give their names, telephone numbers etc. to each other was costly in time and postage, but now with age-range from teens to OAP a group know of each others' existence. A DIRECTORY of enthusiasts will break through the secrecy barrier - and enable people to contact each other direct.

We need name and address, including post-code, and telephone if any.

By using simple abbreviations, lots of information can be given on a few lines per unit. Details of children would interest others, with young families. Some folk may wish to say under 20, 40, 60? Single? We shall design what is needed, but the more detail that's freely sent, the better - such as belonging to INF, Sun Club, NT, RSPB, owning car?

If you like the idea, please participate NOW - using our FREEPOST.

Your reports about changes for good or ill and new discoveries are ever welcome. No stamp needed writing: VALLACK, FREEPOST, MARCH, CAMBS. PE15 8BR. ENGLAND.
