Your New Editor

Over many years of involvement in the Naturist Movement and having taken part as an administrator in the Canterbury Sun Club, I have come to meet many of the readers of this magazine at Rallies and inter-club visits.

You will probably remember me as a participant in volleyball and table tennis at Rallies. Editing a magazine is not entirely new to me, since I have prepared publications of one type or another during an administrative career.

However, I do not take on the position of Editor of your magazine without a deep sense of responsibility.

It is your magazine. It should be informative. It should also be a magazine of a high standard produced as a commercial proposition.

The latter factor is most important in order to achieve and maintain a high standard. There is not likely to be any doubts about the quality as my predecessor, John Gilmour, Joan Treanor and Perc Cousins have progressively improved the magazine until its present high level has been reached.

It is my intention to maintain that high quality and to improve it further still if possible. I will also attempt to use the magazine as a means of informing you of the activities of Naturists in New Zealand as well as abroad.

The magazine also enjoys a substantial Australian readership. It is hoped that these readers will continue to regard the "N.Z. Naturist" as the "Australasian Naturist".

A change in the distribution in Australia (through subscriptions instead of through book-stalls) does not mean any lessening of importance of the Australian readership. The change has come about only because of economic factors divorced entirely from editorial considerations.

I hope you all continue to enjoy this magazine.

It is with mixed feelings that I introduce myself as the new Business Manager for the N.Z. Naturist. In the first place I thank those people who have supported my appointment for the confidence in me.

I was somewhat disappointed that I was the only nominee so I am not quite sure that I am appointed because of lack of anyone else.

I must confess that I do not fully realise what the future will bring but it is a great comfort to know that I can draw on the terrific experience of the previous business manager, Charles Selwyn and the previous editor, John Gilmour.

I have no doubt that with the co-operation of the full editorial committee and the new editor a fruitful team effort will result in a new lease of life for the magazine.

The magazine will be run on a subscription basis from now on. It is therefore also essential to get the cooperation also from all who are interested in nudism and its expression to the outside world.

The 18th Annual General Meeting of the Executive, and the 23rd National Rally was held at Pineglades, Christchurch. The weather was almost too hot, resulting in many people suffering from dehydration and sunstroke.

At the Half A.G.M. at Taupo, two Clubs, South Auckland Sun Club and North Shore Sun Club, were admitted as full members of the Association.

21 of the 25 Clubs forming the Association were represented at the A.G.M. which was a good representation. I am very pleased to report that the N.Y.C. were admitted as full members of the Association. The Manawatu Sunseekers Club were granted provisional membership.

The New Zealand Naturist has experienced liquidity problems during the last year, with the result that it was deemed necessary to return to the previous form of control. Emiel Roland will be Business Manager and Eddie Kay will head the Editorial Committee.

The magazine has up to now been supplied to Club members at below cost. As the Delegates agreed that it was a specialist magazine for Naturists and should be supported by the people for whom it is produced, as from the March 1975 issue the price to Clubs will be seventy five cents per copy. The meeting passed as a mandatory measure that each family unit take a subscription.

The Capitation Fee was increased to seventy cents per member, of which ten cents will go to the Perc Cousins Trust Fund. Now that Clubs are required to pay their Capitation Fees on their membership at 30 September each year it has become apparent that some Clubs are paying only on those members who have paid their subscription as at that date. Clubs should pay a Capitation Fee on each member for whom they have received a subscription during the previous twelve months.

The Half A.G.M. will be held in Wellington, and the next Annual General Meeting of the Executive, and the Rally will be held in Auckland on A.O.H.C's grounds. A.O.H.C. expressed the hope that all the Auckland Clubs would combine in organising and running the Rally.

Progress of legislation covering Free Beaches has been fully reported in this magazine. Although it is disappointing that progress has been slow it is heartening that indications are that our proposed amendment to the Police Offences Act will be passed.

The Rally was opened by Mr Roger Drayton, Member of Parliament for St Albans. The fine weather enabled sports to be played throughout the Rally, with the exception of one afternoon when they were called off for a couple of hours because of the heat.

Once again Miniten was not fully completed at the end of the fifth day. Although some of the players were laid low with the effects of dehydration and sunstroke, the sports were enjoyed by all competitors.

On the evening of the first day of the Rally a Debate and Forum on the subject "Has Nudism a future in New Zealand" was held. Some interesting views were expressed and many members later expressed to me that they had felt that it had been very interesting and instructive.

The new P.R.O. rang Miss Patricia Bartlett the previous day and invited her to speak at the Debate and Forum. However, owing to the lateness of the invitation Miss Bartlett was not able to accept.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Association, held on the last day it was decided to convene a Sports Committee to consider various aspects of Sports at Rallies. Some years ago, a Sports Committee produced a book of Sports Rules for use at Rallies, but did not deal with such questions as:-

(a) Whether teams representing Clubs should be composed only of players nominated by those Clubs.

(b) Number of teams each Club may enter in each event.

(c) Composite teams being entered.

(d) Whether nominations for events should be notified to the Host Club prior to the Rally or whether entries should be taken when teams arrive.

(e) Whether any member may play for a Club of which he is not a member.

The arrangements for the Rally were thorough with the result mat all went smoothly. The two unforeseen events were coped with expeditiously. The thanks of all those attending the Rally must go to all concerned with the arrangements.

rally

report

It is an interesting factor to note that at the very first Rally held at the then Wanganui grounds on 24-25 January, 1953 there were 38 adults and 19 children present.

At the 23rd rally held in Christchurch at the Canterbury Sun Club's grounds there were approximately 1,000 members with children representing 22 clubs plus two overseas visitors - one from Glasgow and the other from the U.S.A.

The movement has certainly come a long way from those very first days. This certainly gives an indication of the growth of the movement throughout New Zealand and how members are prepared to travel long distances to be with fellow nudists and to enjoy the friendliness that prevails at these rallies.

The rally had hardly finished before the conversation pieces centred on how many were intending to travel to Auckland for the next rally.

The weatherman was more than kind to us and, in fact, some felt that he should turn down the heat. Many were to be found sheltering under the shady trees, watching those 'poor' but keen members out there on the games courts.

When we did get a drop or two of rain to relieve the extreme heart, most felt that it didn't interrupt by any means and in fact wished that t had been more prolonged.

Following the NZSA Annual General Meeting which was well attended and much business was discussed and attended to, the Opening of the rally took place the next day. As has been the precedent in the past, the official opening was declared by 'outsiders'.

Following morning tea, [he games were underway.

It was a far cry from that first rally when to fill in time, tennikoits were played and it was even suggested that perhaps a trophy could be presented at the 2nd rally.

At this rally there were trophies for volleyball, tennikoit, swimming, table tennis, chess & miniten.

When these are classified into junior & senior, doubles, singles, mixed, ladies, mens etc.,the trophy table was well laden & keen was the competition to gain one at least of those glittering cups.

However, all the time was not used in playing sport. There was entertainment to fill in the evenings.

The first evening was given over to 'A Getting to Know You function'. This was certainly one way of meeting and talking to those newcomers to a rally.

Even though one is a nudist and to some of us who have for very many years been a nudist, it was still interesting to listen to the debate one evening re 'The future for Nudists'.

The group discussions that followed were quite an eye opener as one tends to become so used to being a member and accepting all that Naturism holds that we don't think of the new member who is trying to find his feet and fit into our way of life.

The concert put on was certainly a wonderful evening. The talent that came to the fore and provided by the various clubs was certainly of a very high standard. Some could almost end up being professionals.

The only complaint heard that evening was that it was too short, even though it had lasted for over three hours. Without going into further details and of course, everyone had his own idea of what was the best item, Canterbury should put on something similar every year whether they are hosting a rally or not.

New Year's Eve? It's great to be out and having a ball. Most dressed in fancy dress, giving the judges the usual headaches, and having that midnight plunge. But comes the morn when one is supposed to be out on the volleyball court at 9 am, then everyone wishes the Celebrations were last week. And that voice telling you to hurry up or your team will have to default! The thought is why doesn't he go and get lost. But of course, next year you will do the same at the rally and strangely, survive it all.

When you go to purchase your bread and milk from the canteen you take it for granted that it will be available. How many people stopped to analyse just how many pints of milk and loaves of bread were sold? The figures were terrific. No wonder the staff of the canteen were kept on their toes all day. Plus of course the drinks, ice creams. With that hot weather the demand was very heavy. The foodstuffs, sun tan lotions, washing powders etc that were sold some of the local shops would have given anything to have handled that turnover in the short period of time.

Being so hot, thoughts of eating, turned to keeping the canteen fully occupied in emptying their 'cooler' of drinks. The National Secretary said that from the number of trips she made plus the emptiness of her purse over the period of the rally she must have 'downed' that whole container alone.

The members' meeting was held under the shade of the trees. Ideas and suggestions were aired and reviewed as this is the annual opportunity when all members can get together to have their say.

Following a combined barbeque in the middle of the grounds the presentation of the trophies was made and weren't those youngsters thrilled to go up and collect from the National President the trophy they had earned after so much effort. The adults seemed just as pleased with their efforts and the runners up were probably thinking that perhaps next year it will be their turn.

To end the rally there was a 'Farewell, glad to have met you party'. Although all didn't depart the next day there was a noticeable change in the numbers present as members either headed for home and back to work or else off to visit other club grounds.

A great job 'Pineglades'! Your Rally Organiser and his grand team of helpers all. After this tremendous rally you are sure to be starting preparations for your next rally as your fame will spread far and wide. You should be inundated with members from all the clubs and at the rate they are increasing, who knows how many clubs that will be.

rally

sport

With soaring temperatures and only 20 minutes of rain over the five days of the rally, sports enthusiasts were able to concentrate on the skills involved in their particular game. The tummy bug undoubtedly flattened some performances but nevertheless, fine games were seen in all sports.

Gisborne dominated tennikoits and fully deserved the four titles they took home with them. Bevan, using his height and long reach to good advantage, was unbeatable in the singles, and he also won the doubles, combining with Barry in this event. Fellow club mates, Lance and Susan, won the junior doubles and Lance, showing a high degree of skill a and agility on the court, went on to beat Neil (Wellington) in the final of the junior singles.

The efficient way in which Sandra and Ian organised the tennikoits, made it possible to run singles competitions in both junior and Senior and the effort was made even more worthwhile for competitors when Gisborne donated a cup for the senior competition, with the junior cup coming from AOHC thanks to the generosity of Roly.

Doug Cousins trophy holder, Ron (AOHC, and ex Hawkes Bay)was forced to relinquish his men's title to Eddie, a well known swimmer from Canterbury. Maria, also of Canterbury, showed some fine style to beat spirited opposition in the women's races, with club mate, Gary, taking the Boy's 8 to 10 years and David Wells trophies. Anne (Wellington) won the same two events in the girls section.

Holders of the Oranui Trophy for men's volleyball, Wellington, had to fight hard to retain the trophy in the face of some strong opposition especially from Canterbury, who beat them in the preliminary rounds. Wellington took their revenge however, in the play-offs by beating the tall Canterbury team by 2 games to one. An appreciative audience saw many fine rallies and spikes before Wellington's experience and calm play under pressure held out against the enthusiasm of Canterbury.

The Canterbury 'B' team played their way fortuitously into third place with AOHC Roosters filling the fourth position. With no junior competition this year, the Congdon Trophy was awarded to the three youngsters from Nelson who played in the senior competition. While Nelson never won a game, they gave many teams a hard game and were often only a few points behind. Canterbury Ladies proved to be too strong for the Auckland and Wellington oppositions and were deserving winners in their competition.

Colin of Wellington, provided a big upset in the Table Tennis by beating his Auckland rival of old, Charles (AOHC) in three sets in the singles event. He went on to complete a fine double, winning the doubles with David from Charles and Eddie (AOHC) June from Canterbury showed aggression and a strong forehand smash to win the Ladies' singles, the doubles with Sandra and the mixed doubles with Des - a well deserved hat-trick for her and just reward for some very good play by her partners. The juniors applied their skills conscientiously with Quentin and Greg running out winners in this event.

With over 100 games played, miniten again proved its popularity and the high standards of play right from the first round provided ample evidence of the amount of practice which goes into this sport. Neil (Wellington), with an age group swimming title already to his credit, added the Junior singles and doubles (with Lesley) to his list of achievements and continued to prove that, as a sportsman, he has few peers in terms of his all-round ability.

Helen and Jo-Jo (AOHC), Ladies doubles title holders had few answers for the hard smashes of Maria and the good length shots of Anne from Canterbury. Maria and Anne eventually winning 6-4, 6-4. Helen, however, gained reward for her good play by beating Chris from Canterbury in the final of the Ladies' singles match

there was little between the two women with fitness and youth being the deciding factors after two hard-fought and entertaining sets.

Canterbury set high standards in dominating the other miniten events with three being all-Canterbury final in both the mixed doubles and men's doubles. Husband and wife, Roy and Colleen, combined well together and played very consistently to beat Brian and Maria, while Bruce and Rod L were eventually too powerful for Roy and Rod D. This final however, provided some exciting rallies especially in the first of the two sets played.By comparison, the men's singles, usually the highlight for most spectators, turned out to be a dull affair with Bruce winning 6-4, 6-0. The first set saw some hard hit shots, skilful net play and fine passing strokes but the second set was largely a matter of returning the ball until one player made an error.

A relatively new Rally 'sport' played at Christchurch was Chess. Two trophies were donated by Canterbury with the Senior one being won by Bevan (Gisborne) with Quentin (Canterbury) succeeding in the junior event. In the nudist movement, the emphasis is mainly on the body, but the sight of two naked people lying under the trees silently contemplating the protection of their King by the Queen, or whatever, was one which I hope will be shared by others at future rallies.

With few hitches, a lot of great games, tremendous goodwill, and tons of healthy club rivalry, the 23rd Rally drew to a close as the South Island narrowly beat the North in a not-too-serious game of volleyball while a hideous St Trinians team blustered their over painted way to a win (so they tell me) over an assorted mixture of oddballs. Meanwhile referee, Pat, was coping with numerous buckets of water sadistically donated by some well wishing spectators.

Rally Sports Co-ordinator.

Breakthrough for Adelaide

Port Ohope next?

The long awaited official declaration of a free beach in Australia has been made. On February 13, the South Australian state government declared part of Maslins Beach, Australia's first legal nude bathing area.

Half the foreshore and waters south to Blanche Point was taken for the purpose. Police have been instructed that naked bathers at Maslins should not be prosecuted for indecent exposure.

The Premier, Mr Dunstan, said the Government had been studying the possibility of "free beaches" in SA for some months.

He said that MasIins probably would be the first of a number of declared beaches for nude swimmers, but the others would be in more remote parts.

In reaching the decision, Mr Dunstan said that the government had been concerned about the position developing at Maslins, where numbers of people including family groups have been bathing nude for some time.

"Where numbers of nude bathers had been building up and the law was not adapted to allow the position to continue, a difficult situation had arisen for the police and the local council.

"A request was made by the Government for the local council to amend its by-law but the council believed that if nude bathing was to be allowed, the decision should be made by the State Government. The council had no objections to the proposals."

Signs would be put up to let people know that they were entering a nude beach but there were no plans to screen the beach or put up a dividing fence between the nude and non-nude areas.

No restrictions as to age would be in force so parents who objected to their children entering the nude area would have to police that themselves.

Everyone could use the nude beach whether dressed or undressed.

However, if there was other specifically indecent behaviour, offenders would be prosecuted.

Giving the reason for Government's action, Mr Dunstan said this would protect people bathing in the nude in a family group and acting with otherwise completely normal propriety from the possibility of a jail sentence.

The president of the Australian Nudist Federation, Mr W Doril hailed the move as "a fantastic step and very enlightened move by the Government."

Mr Doril who is also Secretary of the Tindo Club said 67 letters asking M.P's to support Maslins as a nude bathing area had been sent recently.

Emiel Roland congratulated the Australian Free Beach Committee on their successful bid to obtain Maslins (40 km from Adelaide) as Australia's first legal free beach.

The news was so much more gratifying after the unprovoked police raids on the well recognised and long established Sydney nude bathing areas. Public outcry and editorial disgust at the police action was strong.

Maybe Port Ohope will be the next free beach!

New Zealand

Radio 1ZB conducted a talk back session on Tuesday, February 18 on the subject of free beaches. All telephone calls were for genuine information and no adverse comments were received.

The Rally in Christchurch has resulted in a lot of publicity for the free beach issue. In his opening speech, the Christchurch city councilor, Mr Peter Blaxell, chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Council, gave his personal assurance of his co-operation if the Canterbury Sun Club would present proposals.

South Island newspapers featured the free beach issue as a current topic.

At the NZSA meeting, the subject was thoroughly discussed and anybody who had doubts about any aspects of the free beach campaign left with full information and explanations.

The understanding reached during the Rally will be further reinforced when North Island members (and South we hope) meet again at a Port Ohope weekend on 8-9 March, 1975.

rally

The 6th Australian Nudist Federation Convention Rally was held at the Kiata Club N.S.W. from December until January 4th. A wonderful attendance of over 200 permanent camp site units enjoyed the hospitality of our host club, in excellent weather at their very scenic club ground.

The actual Convention Meeting was held December 30th at which delegates from 17 affiliated clubs were in attendance. The meeting opened at 9.54. The President, Sandy McDonald, gave his address of welcome to delegates, observers and all interested members present, including the Crawford Production filming crew, who were on location at the Convention for three days, filming for the forthcoming 'Documentary on Nudism in Australia.'

Sandy expressed the sentiments of all present at the plight of our fellow members and indeed all residents of Darwin, and reassured the Darwin Sun Club that they would have all the support we could give.

The Secretary, Werner Doril, who had earlier in the year been our delegate to the I.N.F. Congress, reported very informatively on this Congress, and also on his busy but rewarding year in office, as our hard working Secretary.

All member clubs gave optimistic reports of their year's activities, many particularly in the Free Beach area. Sub committees were formed to update our Constitution, for possible ratification at the next A.N.F. Convention, and also the feasibility of the A.N.F. leasing or purchasing land for a permanent site for our future Conventions.

The newly formed Nudist Association of Victoria who applied for affiliation was discussed, but could not be resolved with our present Constitution. The matter will come before the next meeting.

The next convention rally will be hosted by River Valley in Echuca Victoria, beginning Monday December 29th.

Sandy McDonald, President for past two years, and Ted Weston vice-President, and executive member for many years, both stepped down this year. Both these men have and still are, contributing immensely to our Movement in Australia and overseas, and will be missed on the executive. We wish them well, and know their valued advice will always be available to us.

President for 1975 is Werner Dorfl of the Tindo Club, S.A. Vice President is Alan Neicho of Hellos Club Victoria. Assistant Secretary Len Farrow of the Rosco Club,

N.S.W. and the Secretary is Mary Weston of the Corio Club, Victoria, who can be contacted at 11 Cheltenham Street, Newcomb, Vic., 3219, phone 212634 Geelong.

With the co-operation of the clubs the year promises to be even better one than the last; We in the executive will certainly do all that we can to assist in whatever way the clubs feel necessary. The A.N.F. are the people in all our clubs. Our existence being to co-ordinate our ideas and ideals on a united, workable national level, for the benefit of every individual member, not just a few.

The Rally results for the sports trophies were :-

TENNIS TROPHY, won by HESPERIDES, N.S.W. runner up KIATA, N.S.W.

JUNIOR TENNIS, won by HELlOS, Vic. runner up HESPERIDES

MINITEN TROPHY, won by HESPERIDES, N.S.W. runner up GOOD COMPANIONS, Qld.

WOMEN'S STATE VOLLEY BALL, won by VICTORIA. runner up N.S.W.

TABLE TENNIS, won by HELlOS, Vic runner up WOODLANDS, N.S.W.

BATINGTON, won by CORIO, Vic runner up HELlOS

BADMINTON, won by HELlOS, Vic runner up HESPERIDES.

SWIMMING TROPHY, won by HELlOS, Vic runner up HERITAGE, N.S.W.

VOLLEY BALL, won by HELlOS, Vic

CHILDRENS' TROPHY, won by HELlOS, Vic.

CLUB OF THE YEAR, won by HELlOS, Vic

The A.N.F. conclude this report with sincere thanks to the host club, KIATA, for a most successful 'get together' of nudists from all around Australia, and of course we all can look forward to the 1975 'reunion' at River Valley.

Mary Weston, A.N.F. Sec.

NATURI - Sydney N.S.W.

Summer in Sydney so far has left much to be desired. We have had a mixture of very hot, sultry days and a few quite cool ones. The Christmas period was good, not too hot, except for a couple of days, and quite a few members camped on club grounds.

We were pleased to welcome visitors Meinhardt and Hilda from Helios (Vic.), and Teg and Erica from Eureka (Qld). They had all been to the convention at Kiata.

Several very enjoyable evenings were spent in the club house between Christmas and the New Year. Films by Bob, piano-accordian selections by Clarice, mouth organ by Ernie, and some very sweet Maori songs by Audrey, and community singing by all. The pool table and table tennis table were also popular. The swimming pool was always in use.

A new filtration system has been installed, and we regard our clear sparkling pool as one of the best in any club. Much work has been carried out by members repairing and painting caravans, and clearing undergrowth to reduce fire risk. The recent very dry spell has caused a serious lack of water, and the levels of our dams were becoming very low. However, two very heavy storms, although only of short duration, have eased the situation.

A large tank has been installed at the rear of the club house and guttering will soon be erected, thus giving us an extra one thousand gallons of water for use in the club house and adjacent huts and camps.

Heinz and a group of helpers laid a concrete floor and erected a very nice storage shed for club equipment. Many thanks Heinz, and members trust you and Eicke enjoyed your well earned holiday at Kiola.

DARWIN SUN CLUB REPORT

Not even a cyclone called Tracy has dampened the enthusiasm of the remaining members of the Darwin Sun Club. We got wiped off the map, so what! its back to square one for a while, a bit of hard work and our club will be rebuilt.

The case for a Public Free Beach will be continued, and we will still ask for a hearing in the February sittings of the Legislative Assembly.

Our application for Crown Land for club purposes will also still be pursued. The address remains the same, P.O.Box 4741, Darwin.

My personal thanks go out to all the Clubs, the A.N.F. and the free beaches, for their generous donations to the Darwin Cyclone Disaster Fund.

We still want the "beer can regatta" to be held, and I hope, as a club, we can assist the authorities in command, in organising public social and sporting events.

Thank you all, Roger Millard, (President.)

Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc

Over the past few months we have experienced some glorious weather at 'Oranui'.

The members have been out in force during the Xmas/New Year period and many new families have been introduced to social nudism.

A variety of activities have taken place and generally there has been something of interest for every one. Our most important function for 1974 was, without a doubt, the official opening of the new clubhouse extensions by our Patron Sir Dove-Myer Robinson on November 16.

This was followed by a social in the evening when some 300 members and their friends attended. It was a huge success and a grand finale to many months of hard work.

Two beach trips have already been enjoyed. The first in conjunction with other North Island clubs was held at 'Port Ohope'. Judging by comments received from those who ventured South during the week end of November 9-10 it was excellent.

On December 1, Uretiti was visited - our first for the season and as usual we had the company of Northern Sun Seekers for the day.

Another trip is planned for the early new year and we hope to go in greater strength this time. December 8, was the day Old Santa called to the grounds to distribute Xmas cheer and presents.

The ice creams, jellies and cakes were certainly demolished in quick time by all the kids present and a good time was had by all.

20 members represented the club in volley ball mini-ten, swimming and tenniquoits at the Rally.

Under the blazing sun, some torrid games were contested during the four days but in the final results, the best we could do was to win the women's miniten singles.

Well it looks as if the host beat us again.

Looking at the camping scene, we noted numerous visitors. There has been a film evening and a wine and cheese so far. Both have been popular. With two good months left we can certainly expect a steady attendance of both day and holiday visitors.

MANAWATU SUNSEEKER'S CLUB

New Year greetings and best wishes to all sunbathers from the newest club in New Zealand. Yes, we are all of two months old now, and going strong, with a rapidly increasing and very enthusiastic membership. At the time of writing, we have a membership of 28 adults and sixteen children. Not all are full members of course, but all are equally enthusiastic.

The most momentous occasion in our short life came about a couple of week's ago, when after looking dismally at the exorbitant prices of all the lovely bits of land around the Manawatu, we had two lovely ripe plums dropped in our laps.

Now we have two grounds - town and country! The first one is in the very middle of Palmerston North, where we will have a pool installed before next season, as soon as we've chopped down the lupin and laid out the grounds.

This area is very private, with a little clubhouse that will soon become available, a playhouse for the kiddies in the offing, and nice new trees struggling for survival in the scorching Manawatu sun.

The other grounds - our country 'spot', is out in the hills about 11 miles from town. It is surrounded by native bush, has several grassy clearings, and a beautiful clear stream with super swimming holes.

We are also very pleased, that after having our case put at the Christchurch rally, we have been accepted for provisional affiliation. A very big thank you to all those clubs who supported us.

We started our year very auspiciously with a delightful Christmas party held in the pouring rain. It was raining when we started, but we're all very stubborn types, and hopefully thought that the sun would appear if we looked hard enough.

So 37 people piled into six cars, and sought the sun half way round the Wairarapa and the Manawatu. We had a very daring sponsored dive off a 5 foot high cliff into an icy river, and ended up cooking sausages on a fire in the President's back yard. Nevertheless, we had a great time, and we're all still members.

Other subsequent outings have been blessed with much better weather, and it has been interesting to watch the progress of our members from white, through the varying shades of pink and red, to a lovely deep rich tan.

One of the aims of our club is making friends and meeting people with a common interest - that of nudism. To this end we have arranged trips to various clubs around our area with the hope that our visits will be reciprocated, even if just for the day. We also have an interest in the youth activities, as many of our members come into this age group.

Well, this is probably enough from us for our first time in print, If you would like to join us among the native bush, or even in chopping down the lupin (a very slimming exercise) just write to P.O. Box 7087, Palmerston North, or ring 69.600 - you'll be very welcome.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB INC.

Biggest news from the Bay this time is that the old enemies who have been tormenting us for years, Murky and Shorty Waters, have been dispossessed and driven from the grounds with the aid of our friendly neighbour who has generally allowed us to tap some springs on his hillside just 500 metres away

We now have a bountiful supply of beautiful sparkling water piped onto our grounds to keep our tanks brimful and our pools crystal clear. Our pools have been painted as well, and the surround paving extended, and so are looking quite glamorous.

Our recent AGM returned the previous officers along with a new look committee full of new ideas. Our Canteen buzzes with business, our lounge is redecorated and the place is alive with people enjoying themselves. Even though we managed no advertising because spring rains delayed the painting and filling of the pools, we have had a steady flow of new members. They have helped the funds and provided helpers to carry on our development programme. Now our ablution block is roofed and ready to go.

More than 20 of us sailed South to enjoy the Rally at Pineglades, although taking things quietly sports wise.

A few we hear ventured on into the deep South and discovered some fabulous lakes and coastal beaches for nude swimming. Something we are short of at home.

Our busy social calendar closed with a happy barbecue sing along and children's Christmas party to round off our best social season ever, thanks to our hardworking organiser and his committee. Apparently our new organiser is out to make this season just as enjoyable.

At Easter we stage the first H.B. mini rally complete with interclub sports. If this interests you then it may not be too late to join us, so get in touch right away.

And to anyone else living in the Bay who would like to share sun and social fun with us, we suggest you drop a line to Box 551 Napier, or telephone 55331, and we. will be glad to show you our facilities and introduce you to our friendly members.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY YOUTH GROUP

Hi there,

We would like to thank all the clubs who were at Ohope Beach, also private persons for their support of our raffles of wine and chocolates. We hope that all prize winners did not get too full or sick on our chocolates.

We increased our funds a fair bit for our club house.

Owing to distance and finance, we were unable to go to the Rally to defend the Junior Volley Ball trophy. We would like to say congratulations to the winners. We will be at the next rally in the North Island.

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

Back into print after unfortunate omissions from the last two 'Naturists', South Auckland must be leading the way for achieving the most in the shortest time.

The last few months have seen a tremendous interest in our club with total membership totalling around 250 at the end of summer. Our grounds have rapidly changed shape under the willing hands of a hard core of workers who selflessly clear, mow, trim, cut and maintain for the ultimate benefit of all members and visitors. The temporary pool, filtered and chlorinated, is stretched to capacity at present but the permanent pool complex will become a reality through the winter. We have had the official go-ahead from the local Council to use our land as a nudist area and development of appropriate activity and sports facilities is in top gear.

Our policy of friendly and cordial hospitality has opened the way to visits to and from sister clubs in Auckland and the Waikato. As our amenities improve, so more exchanges will take place. We have an open door policy when it comes to inter-club activities and comradeship.

During the winter, a full range of events is planned so that by next summer we should be well and truly established as the most progressive club in the Auckland area.

Until next time, be kind,

JAYJAY

AURORA SUNSEEKERS

Thank you very much Canterbury for such fine weather during the Rally. I only hope you don't have to pay too dearly for it in the winter as you usually do?

Well now that the holidays are over we are hoping to get on with clearing some bush. We hope to get a volley ball court in operation fairly soon so we can practice for the next Rally.

Our swimming nights start again soon, which we will carry on through the winter. We have found this to be a great help in persuading new members to shed their gear. It is also thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike, in fact, a real Godsend to our Social Calendar.

Our Social Committee has already been working on things to do in the months to come.

The Aurora club no longer have their grounds in Green Island. After many months of strife we had to vacate the grounds on a point of Principle. If you wish to know more on this matter please refer to our Newsletter of Xmas 1974. Also your delegate to the AGM will be able to clarify any points you don't understand.

The Aurora club extend a vote of thanks to all the clubs who lent support to us on this issue.

I must take this opportunity to mention the Otago Sun Club's latest venture. It is a Sauna and Gym. called The Leisure Centre. I visited it recently and must congratulate them on all that they have achieved. I also recommend the same to anyone who happens to be in Dunedin, it is really worth a visit.

You will without doubt receive a warm and friendly welcome, as you will if you visit our club.

That's all for now folks, hope the summer lasts till the next one.

GEYSERLAND CLUB

Hi! What a summer it has been.

We started off during spring with improving the access drive. What an engineering feat that was, for us at any rate! Now that we are able to get our cars right onto the ground our members as well as visitors have been making great use of the grounds.

Much of the work at the grounds has been done by individuals as many of our members are shift workers, who are able to be present when the remainder are at work or engaged in their domestic chores.

However we have had a successful social with a large number of members and prospective members attending which gave a great start to the summer.

Our Christmas Dinner at the Chevron on the 1 5 December was not quite so well attended though we were pleased to have a representative from the Bay of Plenty Club.

Well, the best of the sun to you all. If you are a member of another Club and are travelling our way, do drop us a line to let us know you are coming. If you are not yet a member of a club and would like to join us, we would be pleased to hear from you.

TARANAKI NATURISTS' CLUB

Summer time is for nudists and this summer the weather has really been made to order. A sensible respect for the sun has been apparent amongst the sun-lover's this year with suntans being built up gradually and painlessly while children's sensitive skins are being cared for as they should be.

Dehydration is a summer condition that has attracted a lot of attention. It shouldn't be necessary to remind people that fluid loss must be replaced so make sure that everyone, especially the kiddies and oldies, have plenty to drink.

This year's contingent to the Rally was not as large as we had hoped. It possibly made up in noise what it lacked in numbers.

The armchair experts who do nothing constructive will undoubtedly have their criticisms of some aspects of the Rally but from those of us who attended let me say congratulations to Christchurch on a most enjoyable and well organised five days. The thought that went into providing something for everyone was really outstanding and a lot of credit goes to the untiring efforts of a band of willing workers from the host club.

Talking of work, the few members of our club who stayed on our club grounds over the holidays have toiled like slaves to get the ablution block working and a start made on the pool. Even visitors from other clubs have made a great effort to assist our small work force. Finance has been a handicap in the past but now with this small problem sorted out there appears to be nothing to stop our progress.

Our childrens' Christmas party was a great success although the day was not as fine as we would have liked. Some neighbours attended and one as Father Christmas distributed the presents. Some adults even said that they had a better time with the children than at the adults party which was held in the evening.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB

What a terrific summer - weatherwise and clubwise here in Palmerston North.

The grounds have been full of visiting caravans and tents plus our own ten permanent caravans and numerous tents over the holidays.

It was lovely to see familiar faces again on their way to the Rally.

On New Year's Eve we had a party and barbecue and all went for the usual midnight swim.

We are now planning our winter programme. First and foremost will be the concrete surrounds to the new pools plus getting the new filter ready for next summer.

If you would like to join us and spend your leisure hours swimming and playing the odd game of miniten and volley ball, just write to the Secretary, P.O. Box 980, Palmerston North for a quick reply with Club Brochure.

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

1974 has come and gone, and here in the Bay of Plenty it has been a progressive year for the club. It started with the club finding suitable land for our club grounds. A start was made in developing the grounds, and our drive for new membership was achieved by a concerted effort to spread the good word and by newspaper advertising.

The choice of Ohope beach to be used as a free beach brought in a few enquiries. I have participated in quite a few beach trips, Pakiri, Uretiti etc, but I think that Ohope was not quite as well patronized as the other ones. From discussions with various people interested in nudism the feeling down this way is that if they wanted to swim or sunbathe in the nude there are many isolated beaches in this neck of the woods where they can, and have been doing so for a long time now, whereas up north the situation seems a little different.

From enquiries received we have found that people will still want to join nudist clubs for the companionship and the feeling of being able to belong and to be identified with some kind of club. This, I think is a good thing. At the start, I thought that with the inception of free beaches, people would be drawn away from the organized clubs, but this does not appear to be so.

Our childrens' Christmas party was held on Dec. 15th and this went over very well, despite a rather overcast day.

We hope to have quite a few visitors. It is good when members from other clubs visit as views and ideas from other clubs are always appreciated when new clubs and grounds are being developed.

I have just returned from a visit to A.O.H.C. and I must congratulate them on their grand new clubhouse. It goes to show what can be done when membership and enthusiasm grow.

NELSON SUN CLUB

With record numbers of visitors from numerous Clubs throughout New Zealand passing through, the Nelson Sun Club has really strained the limited facilities to the full.

Cyril our Secretary, who has been acting as caretaker over the holidays and has had to cut his holiday short due to the illness of his wife Hazel. We all wish Hazel a speedy recovery.

Nelson had only a small number representing our Club at the Rally - those who went really acquitted themselves well. Richard, Gregory, Susan & Steven were awarded the Arthur Congdon Trophy for Junior Volleyball, and Gregory won the swimming trophy for boys 11-13 years. Gregory & Roger were included with four Canterbury players in the South Island team in a North v South volleyball match. The South Island won. Well done team, even though it was a lighthearted affair.

Our underground water storage tank is all but completed and needs only a few leaks to be fixed. Our new ablution block is almost at the halfway stage and will be commissioned before next season. By the time that this issue is printed we will have our three phase power connected. We have recently started a special Swimming Pool Fund and so far the total stands at $163.

The New Years Eve party at 'sunrise' as usual was a great success. The swimming pool seemed to be the local point at that golden hour of midnight. It is amazing the number of visitors that say to us, 'We have heard of your parties.' I wonder what they mean?

Since our last Club Notes we have had an Open Day with many visitors including the Mayor of Nelson looking over our grounds. Also we had an hour talk-back show on the local Radio Station. Our topic for the broadcast was Free Beaches. The results were encouraging.

Any time that you are passing our way or wish to make an inquiry regarding membership drop us a line at P.O. Box 467, Nelson. We would like to hear from you.

GISBORNE SUN CLUB

Five families represented Gisborne at the rally this year which turned out to be one of the biggest gatherings yet. And indeed the hottest. which proved too much for some of our members who unfortunately went down to the Canterbury summer sickness.

Even though having to cope with this, they managed to bring home five trophies which is a record for Mecca.

We are feeling very proud this year. We thank the club at Pine Glades for their wonderful hospitality.

The grass which was planted on the grounds in Spring is growing rapidly which necessitates regular care and attention. Unfortunately the neighbour's cattle thought our shrubbery looked tempting so found a weak spot in the fence and very nearly finished off one or two shrubs. We now have a brand new seven wire fence the full length of the grounds on that side.

With the flush toilet however, we feel we are now able to offer our visitors real convenience while here. Included in the list of visitors was a young lady from Canada so our book is beginning to look like a travel brochure.

New Year's Eve was celebrated in the club house by a few members who were still in Gisborne. An evening of music and dancing for the whole family was most enjoyable.

According to the economists, things are going to be hard this year but not too hard we hope as we have a full calendar of visits and entertainment planned for this year.

The 'free' beach weekend at Ohope in November was attended by a number of our members. They enjoyed themselves so much that they intend to return in March when the next 'free' weekend is planned.

Northern Sun Seekers Inc.

"I've lost my reindeer and sleigh" called Santa as he struggled through the bush, dressed in nothing but a hat and beard and carrying a bag of treats for the awaiting children.

Eyes opened wide and squeals of delight came forth as Santa approached.

Presents were handed to the children and Santa fled back to the bush to hunt for his lost beauties, while everyone else sat down to afternoon tea and enjoyed the remaining sun.

The festive season has however long since passed, but the Hangi and "Hooley" organised for New Year's Eve will still be remembered.

The wind and rain dampened some spirits, but those that remained, certainly made the most of it and even ventured into the pool at midnight.

A few members took the opportunity to camp at the grounds over the holidays and we also had a Wellington family camping and a visit from some Christchurch sun-fans.

The beach trip held at Uretiti on December 1st had a good turnout by our members, but there wasn't the usual busload from Auckland. However, it was a good opportunity for us to sell our raffle tickets, the proceeds of which went to purchase our 20 foot diameter, Para Swimming Pool. It has well and truly been used since its installation by club members.

We have also been busy with a mini publicity campaign. Our main aim was to increase club membership and also to make the public aware of naturism.

Our first success was an interview on the local radio station about nudity in general. It was broadcast on Labour weekend.

We then organised a raffle and followed this up by having a caravan in the central shopping area on a Friday. Leaflets were handed out and discussion between the public and club members was very good.

The over-all result was an obvious change towards a greater acceptance of nudity. Our raffle tickets sold well and we also had a petition, signed by many, supporting legislation approving the use of nominated beaches as free beaches.

This petition is still being distributed among businesses and other towns.

We have also been advertising in the local paper and the response has been fantastic. We have welcomed several new members to the club.

Open days are now held on the first Sunday of each month with outstanding success.

There has also been other activities arranged for the next few months, but we'll save it all for the next newsletter.

No doubt you are all aware of the Come Alive campaign which is just getting its footing, but we hope it is the start toward big and better things so get your A's into G's and Come Alive BE NUDE!

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB

Nothing much to report this time, fellow nudists. The Sundays have been so gloriously fine and hot that sunning and bathing in the pool took precedence over hard work, which will await the cooler days.

We have had some very pleasant social evenings at the homes of members. One of them showed slides of the Club's progress since its inception - and even before that, when it was a private club named 'Kaurimu'.

The highlight of our pre-Christmas activity was the children's party, held on Sunday, 15th December. We had a record attendance, with the carpark well filled with miscellaneous vehicles...

With whiskers waving in the breeze

The jovial Santa sits at ease;

Berobed in garments red and white -

("twas hellish hot and very tight!"

Confessed the burly David B.)

The prancing reindeer and the sleigh

With tinklin bells are very gay:

But sadly out-of-date for us -

We found a much more modern bus:

A farmer's tractor filled the bill,

Cheered on by kiddies with a will!

The theme of next l.N.F. World Congress, enthusiastically received by the 1974 delegates, will be a study of the advantages of nude sport on the background of the ancient Olympics; beyond doubt accompanied by many sports activities in this context. Among other internal questions is the research on a new way of financing by means of INF-stamps or others. Also the research for new naturist grounds in other parts of the world will be stimulated, such as the Pacific, Ivory Coast, Greece, Ceylon and Poland. Officials from Tahiti, Tunisia and Ivory Coast were present at some sessions as were on many occasions French authorities of all kinds who mixed with about one hundred delegates and others of 28 countries as well as the thousands of other naturist campers The echoes of this 14th Congress in the French and the world press have been considerable and very positive. Especially the remark of one official guest of Ivory Coast traveller around the world: he remarked with a fine sense of humour that once the whites taught his people to dress as a token of civilisation, other still more civilised whites tell them now again to undress...

NETHERLAND: 1½ million Dutchmen in favour of free beaches

A new public opinion poll has shown that no less than one and a half million Dutchmen (13%) are definitely in favour of free beaches 45% are indifferent thus 58% are not against; Although communal authorities of Zandvoort on the North Sea near Amsterdam voted in favour of establishing a free beach similar to the successful and legal one at Callantsoog, most juridical authorities are yet very much against. The Dutch federation NFN, counting 5580 family-members, a growth of 14% in a year, issued shares of up to half a million Dutch Guilders for the establishing of the first commercial national naturist site within a few years. The national swimming championships will be held on March 2, 1975 in the Rotterdam-West swimming pool, where the INF championships were held in 1972.

GERMANY: More and more nudes

'Neues Deutschland' informs: 'The expansion of nudism has taken other dimensions besides such of 'well-formed' bodies.' Twenty years ago only 10 km of beach was attributed to nude use, whereas today a 40 km long beach-strip is at the disposal of nudists. If this progress continues at the same rhythm, then there will remain in 1999 only 500 m of beach for textile users, which at that time then would be surrounded and stared at by ... nudists.

ENGLAND: Free beaches yes, free beaches no

The original official decision for a free beach on the North Sea near Hornsea is withdrawn..' following the receipt of legal opinion the council has rescinded their previous decision granting nudist facilities' - so that England again is back where it started, i.e. without free beaches. Everybody is expecting a long and hard struggle for this aim, the CCBN negotiated with Dyffryn (North Wales) authorities for an area of naturist dunes - but failed. It stays as it has been over a number of years: swimming in the nude, but at own risk!

SOUTH AFRICA: Blow for skinny dippers

South African 'illegal' naturists have been most upset: their only refuge new Cape Town, where a real naturist family life was born, 'Sandy Beach' has been sold to developers of hotels, flats and bungalows. Sandy Bay, only 25 km from town, is a wonderful snow white 1½ km beach, it could be anywhere in Corsica with the same climate and charm.

At least 1000 Capetonians enjoyed facilities and in complete nudity. All ages could be found, including school children whose parents often feel they could create problems at school should they talk.

Surprisingly enough, none of those 1000 persons seems to know each other and they were all aware that it was 'illegal' but enjoyed the association! For an 'unorganised naturist beach' without toilet facilities the beach remained spotless and everybody made it their duty to see that environment remained spotless.

LEBANON: Naturist-Sailing-Cruise

An INF-member in Lebanon (T. Goedicke do American University of Beirut) wishes to make cruises with his 13m long motor sailing yacht. These cruises will be arranged for naturists. Naturist friends who are interested in this idea and in sharing the fees are asked to contact him, It is scheduled to leave Beirut for Cyprus and Famagusta, Cape San Andreas, the Bay of Mora Psaria, the Bay of Yalousa, Cyrenia for the Turkish Coast, with Silifke, Anamur, Alanya, Finice, Castleorizo, Marmaris, Sym and Bodrum. On the Isle of Rhodes, the towns of Rhodes and Lindos will be visited.
