Are you very busy? Some of us are. Quite a lot are not. Have you ever noticed, it's the busy people who get things done? In the office, on committees, around the house and garden? Almost invariably it's the people who are always "flat out" who really accomplish things. When volunteers are wanted, you can be sure that folk who agree to help, are already tied up and don't know how they will find the time. But they do and never fail once they have started. Who are the people who criticise, complain or grumble? Are they the busy people? Very seldom. Just have a look around your friends. Those who are genuinely busy have their minds too occupied with their own pursuits to be petty. They may not always agree with you, but that is only because they have a mind of their own and want to be constructive. They are not petty. It is the wife who is always nagging or moaning or otherwise disagreeable who needs to organise the school concert, help with Mrs So-and-so's party, or join some of the many women's organisations and take an active part in their management.

And the chap who is always finding fault needs to take up sport, dramatics, music, Rotary or something similarly constructive. Living your live to the full is as the late Henry Ford said, "You are paying for the space you use on earth." A full life is a happy one and creates happiness among those all round. Sometimes busy people overdo it, but better too much, for a while anyway, than not enough. If you seem to be left on the shelf, don't brood or complain. Don't tear up the other fellow who is always out, always doing this or that, always easing the burden of somebody else. Get in to something yourself, so that you, too, have no time in which to pull the other chap to bits, for he is only trying and doing his best. You will be building constructively yourself, like he is, and after a while you will begin to like it too.

After all, those people who have that complex, are only displaying their own little minds, through jealousy or maybe envy or just plain cussedness. Pretty cheap, aren't they? Examine yourself and see what sort of a guy you are. Be constructive, be busy, be happy.

To quote some famous lines by Washington Irving,

"Great minds have purposes, others have wishes.
Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune;
great minds rise above them."

We are not all great; we are not all clever; but we don't need those attributes to be busy and to make life easier for the other chap. And if you are satisfied you are going to be happier by being busy and make others happier at the same time. Then what on earth are you waiting for?

GREETINGS:

It is always difficult to know what to put in your first article, especially when it will be read by many hundreds of people who don't know you and whom in turn you haven't met yourself. So here's a go.

First of all, I'm sure you will all regret the fact that Ross has had to give up the youth work due to family commitments - the last year has been good, with a successful Rally in Hawkes Bay. This can all be attributed to the Youth Leader's work - a big thanks to you Ross.

Before I start on the next section, those of you who did not meet me at the last National Rally and of Course you parents, will want to know something about me.

My wife and I belong to the Wellington Sun Club, we have five children, and apart from the fact that I am a teacher, I have also been associated with young people in various other capacities.

At the last National Rally, all the youth got together, and we decided to form ourselves into the Nudist Youth Club (N.Y.C.). Officers were elected as follows:

President - Kay from Napier; Secretary - Florette from Wellington; Treasurer - Trevor from Wellington; and a rep. from each club who constitute the committee.

Membership of the N.Y.C. is open to any young person aged 13-20 provided that they are members of a Sun Club. Subs are £1.00 per annum, payable to your own Club Rep. or the National Secretary (c/- Wn. S.C.) for which a membership card is issued. In this way we hope to get as many members as possible, enabling us to really get the N.Y.C. on a sound footing, especially for the next Youth Rally to be held at Wellington Sun Club.

We are busy organising an outing during Easter, spending four days at Ruapehu or in the vicinity, but more about this later. Once we get enough members, we hope to "publish" a regular newsletter in which you can give your views, ideas, criticisms, etc.

I'll leave it at that. Contact your own Club Rep. for more information, and we hope to get you all with it as soon as possible.

"RED CARPET" TOUR

Being comparative newcomers to the Sun Scene my wife and I, with some misgivings, planned a tour of both islands, taking in several sun clubs en route. After our club secretary made the necessary arrangements we set off early in the holiday season.

Our first scheduled stop was Napier where we were to visit the Hawkes Bay Club. After a dusty and somewhat tiresome journey we arrived in Napier at about 7 and proceeded straight away to ring Des who promptly put the clubhouse and grounds at our disposal. Next morning we were visited by John who left us in no doubt as to our welcome and who gave us some very helpful advice on the route to our next stop, Wellington.

The next stage was generally on better roads so that we reached Wellington somewhat earlier and less fatigued than on the previous day's journey. With the aid of the helpful little map (supplied by the W.S.C.'s secretary) we had no difficulty in finding "Five Acres" where Cathy soon handed over the keys to the clubhouse and told us to make ourselves "at home." We had almost finished dinner when we were joined by Bill with whom we shared the clubhouse that night. He "filled us in" on the local gossip and before long we felt we had known him for ages.

As the next day was Saturday quite a few more Wellington members arrived so that we were able to form some opinion of what the club was like. We can wholeheartedly say that everyone we met was very friendly and made us most welcome. At about one o'clock three Napier members arrived to use the clubhouse that night. This, together with a further influx of Wellington members, gave us a good cross-section of the Nudist movement. When we left for the inter-island ferry that afternoon we felt that we were leaving behind a number of newly-found friends and this impression was reinforced when twenty or so Wellingtonians lined the Sun Club drive to wave us "bon voyage."

"Pineglades" was the main stopping point of our holiday and thanks to Joan's arrangements Trevor met us from the ferry at Lyttelton. We followed Trevor through Christchurch and eventually reached "Pineglades" where he bad everything ready for our three weeks stay. Once again we soon made many new friends amongst whom were naturists from Auckland, Otago and Nelson. (In fact there were so many people at "Pineglades" at the peak of the holiday period that it was like a miniature rally). Certainly the "red carpet" had been brought out for us through both islands.

"Pineglades" is somewhat different from the other clubs in that it has its street of cabins. It is so flat and it has the largest teenage population which we have seen in any of the clubs we have visited.

From Christchurch we proceeded to Dunedin - not to stay at the club where there are few facilities - but with the intention of day visiting. The Otago members we had met at "Pineglades" had already spoken of their club in a typical Dunedin way - it was small, it wasn't much good, so when we found our way out to it we were very pleasantly surprised to find a charming situation which, at that time of the year, was readily accessible. Here we met only one couple we had already met in Christchurch and as no committee member was available to show us around we could not honestly say whether the rather negative attitude towards the club mentioned earlier was typical of all members. One couldn't help feeling, however, that a more positive approach would bring new members along and also assist in the development of the partially developed site. The two afternoons we spent there were very pleasant and Gordon and his wife, at least, seemed to appreciate the attractive nature of the grounds.

Although the Deep South had been a little disappointing one couldn't help feeling what a wonderful thing it was to be a nudist. Here we were a family completely unknown in all of these clubs, yet, because we belonged to the great free masonry of Naturism, we had but to cross a club's threshold to find our selves among friends. - B. & N.

So you think you are too fat to join a club?

Ladies - I'm fat. I don't like to admit it and I won't give you my weight and my measurements but if you look at the picture with this article you will see that at least I am happy with the freedom that club life brings. No kids make rude remarks - nobody laughs, club members can see we are all the same "in the flesh". I've lots of stretch marks and operation scars, I'm certainly not athletic - but the bliss of being able to strip off my hot clothes in the sun is wonderful. A tanned skin is very good for hiding many defects.

Too fat to join a club?

If you are worried about how many people will know you are thinking of joining a club you will find everybody uses first names only - but I am no longer worried that other people know we belong; I would like others to join in the fun our family has. Think of the extra vitamins for the children and the fact that your winter cold incidence is greatly reduced. We joined as a family some years ago and I was very apprehensive. I needn't have worried - we had a grand welcome from other club members.

We spend as much time as we can at the club now and the children have their clothes off before the car stops, but guess who nearly beats them in the stripping stakes, yes, fat but tanned Mum! Now you husbands who have read this far can show this to your wives and say, "Look, dear, someone who is fatter than you!" I hope it will help a few more shy women on the way to club membership - be seeing you!"

SUMMER AT PINEGLADES

Pineglades has had a good summer, with a variety of weather and activities. The weather varied from days when it was possible to sit under a tree in the shade, and still drip, to the day it was pouring with rain, and so cold that a fire was lit in the Clubhouse. Mainly it has been good and many fine tans have been produced, with some Redskins.

Father Christmas visited the grounds on the 13th of December, and was welcomed by the large number of children, who were pleased with the gifts he brought. He arrived on the back of a red motor scooter, and found a Clubhouse which was decorated with a Christmas Tree, balloons and streamers. A New Year's Eve Party was a tremendous success, with between 200 and 300 present. The theme of the evening was Hawaiian, and very few of those present were not dressed in some sort of Hawaiian costume, even if it was only a brightly coloured towel. At midnight, after the chimes of Big Ben, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne, about 50 people dived into the pool for the first swim of 1971. A picture was shown on the evening of the 2nd, with a disc dance following, the Swimming Sports were held on the 3rd, and there has been a barbecue, and a games evening.

The cabins have been fully used, and there have been a large number of campers in caravans and tents. Over the month since Christmas, there have been 9 caravans and 19 tents, and on Saturdays and Sundays with the day visitors there have been up to 300 people on the ground. The Club was pleased to act as host to visitors from Otago, Nelson, Wellington, and the three Auckland Clubs.

Some very good publicity was won for the Club recently, when Chris went to 3ZB, and talked to John Blumsky on Town Topic. The telephones were kept busy, and not one adverse comment was heard from those who called in. The programme which was supposed to last 15 minutes was extended to 25.

The club has been host to an author, who is writing a novel. He came to the Club to find peace to concentrate on his masterpiece, and created considerable interest, judging from the number of people who have asked what he is doing, and why. The sound of a typewriter has been heard regularly in the Clubhouse. The Editor insisted that he take time off to write an article for her, and he has obliged.

The membership of the Club increased by 68 members in 1970, a slightly bigger number than in 1969. With the facilities available, and the members who are more than keen, the Club look's forward to the future with considerable confidence. - Uncle Sherlock

Notes from the Editorial Committee:

At the recently held Executive meeting at the Rally at "Five Acres" it was generally felt following the recommendation of the Editorial Committee that the price of future issues of the magazine should be increased. Therefore the Executive have directed that as from this issue the price will be increased.

It is now some years since the magazine price was altered and I am sure that everyone knows that practically everything in N.Z. has recently had a price increase. Printing comes into this category. The coloured photo on the front cover costs more than perhaps we should spend, but we feel that this gives the magazine a definite higher standard of appearance. More photos are used and these are more expensive to use than typeset. Thank goodness the Editorial Committee can't demand a wage increase. They don't get paid...

In the near future we are planning on producing a different size magazine. We had hoped to incorporate this with the price increase, but it wasn't possible. Although the magazine has improved over the past year there is still room for improvement. But to do this we need your co-operation with more photographs and articles. Just because the magazine is a nudist edition there is no need for every article to deal with nudism as its main theme. There must surely be plenty of interesting articles that can be written that would appeal to the reader and probably could be of helpful assistance.

A SHORT HISTORY OF NUDISM

IN AUCKLAND

By BERT B.

I have been asked to give a short history of the Auckland Sun Club but I'm afraid that cannot be given without a detailed report of nudism in Auckland.

In 1934 when walking along Karangahape Road I noticed in a shop window a magazine, the frontpiece of which was decorated with the picture of a young lady unclothed from the waist up. Looking around to see if anyone was about, I went up to the window for a closer look, then timidly went into the shop and bought it. This was an early copy of Health & Efficiency. From then on I purchased each month's copy as it came to hand. Having suffered fur many years with nasal and bronchial catarrh, I was amazed to read in the magazine that catarrh was caused by poisons in the system and these were burnt up by oxygen inhaled into the lungs, also the body too could absorb one-third as much as the lungs if exposed to the air without encumbrance of clothes.

Deciding to try this out, as I had a small farm at the time, I stripped off out among the fruit trees and crops and derived great benefit from it. My wife Helen noticed the change in me, but it took ages before she could be persuaded to join in with me.

In 1935 an advert appeared in one of the local papers, the advertiser wanted to get in touch with people interested in the benefit of the sun's rays. I spoke to Helen about it and she agreed for me to reply. We had an answer to my letter and the advertiser gave his P.O. box number and asked if we were keen enough to be interested in the formation of a club, if so to reply and include a 5/- postal note. This we did and for 3 or 4 months heard nothing, then received a letter returning the postal note and saying that as we were the only ones that trusted them enough to send the 5/-, it had been decided not to go ahead. As there was only a box number and no signature, I never found out who it was.

In the winter of 1937 in the course of my business I complimented a customer on her well tanned baby lying nude in its pram. Remarking that I had a great respect for the benefits to be obtained from exposure to the sun, and I asked her if she had seen the Health & Efficiency magazine. She stated that they received it regularly. I then mentioned about my wife and myself sunbathing in the nude. The next time I saw her she said that she had discussed it with her husband and invited us to join them for a weekend on a small, secluded section they owned at Titirangi. I talked it over with Helen and after some resistance she agreed to go with me the following weekend. We found the place and went in. There was a stream with a small pool close to but screened from the road. Being winter and also being in a valley, the only place the sun reached was the roof of their bach. Therefore on this roof was our debut to sunbathing in mixed company. Our new friends were Ida and Allan and with them we talked about the idea of forming a club based at their Titirangi property. Here was planted the first seed of the Auckland Sun Club.

In the course of business again I found another interested family, Kath and Arthur, who joined us. We decided to go ahead with the formation of a club and managed to get one or two adverts in the Auckland Star, and had a large number of replies, mainly from single men or married men whose wives wouldn't join. It took us a long time but at last a club, the Auckland Sun Club, was formed. Annual fees £1. One country member, the director of several Auckland companies who lived in Gisborne, sent a donation of £10 and another £5.

We were on our way. At about this time an advert was put in the local papers for sunbathers. A meeting was arranged and a number of men turned up. They decided to form a club, but unfortunately the newspapers got hold of the information and the results was that the convener who was made secretary was pestered by one of the local periodicals so much that life was impossible and he was forced to shift from his flat to another district, and so that was the finish of that attempt to form a club. Later after we had got our club in being another advert appeared in the Star. I replied to this and went to their first and third meetings. There were six men present, all single or without their wives. At the second of these meetings was a visitor up from Wellington for a short visit. It was Eric (later the founder of Karimu). After the third meeting this group still had not progressed at all so was disbanded and we continued on with our own small club. Two of the men later were able to interest their wives in joining so our club slowly continued to expand.

Later on we received a letter from Eric who was now in Dunedin. He had started a club down there but later closed down owing to articles about it in the Dunedin press, for nudism in those days was a very ugly word and although his wife would not join we admitted him as a member.

We later heard of a block of land about four acres in area for sale. It was located a short way above the present A.S.C. grounds. We purchased this land. It had a stream just inside the boundary at the back of the section, giving us room to expand, but unfortunately with the war starting severe restrictions on benzine and tyres made it near impossible for members to get out to the grounds so the land was sold to a married couple who were members. To keep members together, especially during the winter, we started meeting each Saturday evening at various members' homes who had the room to spare. Later again we decided to hold all meetings at the secretary's home as it was central and besides he had a large room. We had dances (clothed) and games, and two of us took along sunlamps to help keep up the tans. The biggest muster of members at one time was 32.

At this time I held the position of president and received a summons to appear before the executive of "The Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Women and Children". I duly appeared and was warned that our club was sailing close to the wind by admitting women and children and if they received any complaint they would prosecute us.

At the annual meeting the secretary-ship went to Owen. We then met at his home but as he was a Government Health Official he unfortunately was transferred to another district. With this upset the club went into recess.

In 1945 I purchased the present property of 4¾ acres which is now the home of the Auckland Sun Club. When Helen and I bought the property we decided against forming a club as it was too time consuming and costly but decided instead to have only a few close friends which included some of the old members. I built a bach on the place later when I was able to get the timber (everything was so hard to get in those war days). Still later on again Eric, with whom we had lost touch, happened to see me one day and we invited him and Elvina to join in with us, then a short time later he wished to move from the flat they were in and I offered them the use of the bach as we only came up for long weekends. This offer was accepted and they moved in. Later Eric purchased the block of land below us where to this day he still lives.

ASC clubhouse in 1946

1946

Being handy to the place he was able with the help of myself and some friends to put up a small house, and he decided to form a club practically free of rules and regulations, and the numbers slowly grew. Helen and I decided to build a house at the top of the property near the road. At this time I got a chill of the liver and was ill for a very long time and out of circulation for quite a while. During this time various friends had asked if they could bring other friends, relatives, etc., out. Although Helen and I had been determined that we would not have a club again, the numbers had grown so much that at last we relented and gave permission for a club to be formed on the property and were given free use of it. Just before this we had allowed two friends Harry and Mavis to live in the bach. They had added another room to the upper side of the bach.

A meeting was held and rules and regulations were enacted for the running of the club, also discussion on the name to adopt. Well, having had the experience of forming the first club and finding that the local papers refused to accept nudist or sunbathing adverts, we had in the past got over this by inserting adverts asking readers of H & E mags to get in touch with the undersigned and this was the way we had contacted people for the Auckland Sun Club until the Herald and Star both got wise to this and refused even this style of advert. As a result of this I said that any name of a club suggesting sunbathing would be turned down then suggested the name Auckland Outdoor Health Club and this was adopted. The club progressed; Helen and I helped but refused to take an official part in the club. At the time of the first birthday Helen made a square cake and iced it. On the top we placed two poles and connected to them a piece of green mosquito netting and on each side of the net we placed nude dolls and one candle. This along with a spread of goodies we donated was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

In 1952, Norman, one of the members, wanted to buy the land from me for the use of the club. We came to terms and kept one-third acre and sold the balance of the 4¾ acres to him, subject to two clauses in the sale, these being, that Harry and Mavis be allowed to remain on the property as long as they wished, the other being that my workshop which was located on what would in the future be the access road, would be allowed to remain there until I had time to shift it or if they found the money to build a road down they would give me three months' notice to remove it. Unfortunately new members joined and not knowing of these clauses persuaded Norman to threaten me with legal proceedings if I didn't immediately remove the workshop from their property. I took the hint and removed it as soon as I could but I thought it was pretty tough after having let them have the land and amenities for such a long time free of charge. I immediately severed all connections with the A.O.H.C. In 1953 exception was taken to Harry and Mavis being on the property and it was unfortunately at this time I lost Helen after a couple of strokes.

Harry and Mavis offered to shift out of the clubhouse if the club paid them for the cost of the additions to the bach but members declined to do this. I put an end to the dissension by inviting Harry and Mavis to come and live with me, but this didn't solve the problem and there was a split in the ranks with some of the members moving out to Oranui, taking the name A.O.H.C. with them, the remainder staying on and again forming the Auckland Sun Club.

Even after the disappointments I feel honoured in having been one of the little ripples in the early incoming tide of nudism and which now appears as if it will soon be in full flood and accepted for what it is. A happy family of healthy adherents all made in God's image and not ashamed of it, but proud of it.

Talking to Women

with Gaynor

During the rally at "Five Acres" time was given for a Woman's Hour. As usual at each Rally the attendance was very pleasing. To start the ball going I asked the Mothers present why it was that after all the organising over the past two years in holding two Youth Rallies, one in Auckland and the other at Napier, there were such poor attendances. At the one in Napier held prior to our Rally here there were only 15 members present, yet there were 38 youth members at this National Rally. One Auckland Mother felt that finance and also parental opposition were two answers, while some said that their children did not wish to go or were working for school holidays. Suggestions were brought forward for encouraging the youth members but as we have a new Youth Organiser this year it was generally felt that he should be given the chance to show his abilities and see if next year he can entice more members to the Youth Rally.

During the discussion we were appalled at the number of parents who did not or could not tell their children the facts of life. Here we are, living a life of naturalness to all things regarding the body and there are still some of our children who have to ask others these questions. We have more opportunities than the average parent to explain sex, carrying babies, etc., as it is more obvious to the nudist child. The children don't go around with their eyes shut and are aware of these things. We therefore must take the opportunity to set an example and instruct our children on these matters and help them to live a normal balanced happy life.

Many more comments were discussed and I found that these were really appreciated by the Mothers present. Ideas will be taken back to the clubs and I hope be given much thought. It is still amazing though the number of women that would like some assistance even on a small matter but never do get around to dropping me that line.

An interesting fact that was brought to my notice is that we have no obscenities on our toilet walls. Just look at any public toilet no matter where you are and you will find at least something written.

Health in the sun

FOOD PREPARATION

Have you ever had nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea that has crept up on you suddenly??? Sometimes just after a day out with the family where you had a picnic lunch that was prepared the night before or where you picked up some fish and chips for a quick tea?

The chances are that you have had a dose of food poisoning. The symptoms described above are typical of the Salmonella type and are very common. The poisoning syndrome is usually initiated 7 to 24 hours after the organisms are ingested. It may start with a headache and a chill and may be accompanied by varying degrees of abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The severity of the disease differs with individuals and outbreaks. Convalescence usually is rapid and may vary from a few hours to weeks. The cause?

Contaminated food. The foods involved are numerous and range from milk, bakery goods, meats, gravies, and cured meats. It can become contaminated in many ways, but one of the common methods is by the poor hygienic habits of food handlers, reheating cooked foods, and preparing foods hours and sometimes days before consuming them. Many people quite seriously think that food can be left indefinitely in the refrigerator. How many of us are guilty of placing leftovers in the refrigerator to be used over and again until it is gone.

One of the family with an infection - be it a cough, sore throat. or a sore finger - is enough to put everyone in bed with food poisoning.

Be particularly careful out at your sun club, especially those clubs that still have rudimentary latrines. You must wash after going to the toilet, and don't chide your children if you don't follow the rules yourself!

TEETH

Most large centres, and indeed a considerable number of smaller areas, fluoridate their water supplies. This is providing the protection that children up to the age of 10 need to ensure healthy teeth production. However, when away from home on trips or holidays check whether the local water supply is being treated. If not your chemist can supply fluoride tablets to add to the diet daily to provide continuity for the children. Every home should have some, especially if your family likes to make trips away from home.

FOOTNOTE

There's just no telling some people!!! Prior to every summer (and this magazine is no exception) warnings have poured forth from TV, Radio, Press, and yet this correspondent was shocked to see the number of sunbathers, both in our movement and elsewhere, sporting terrible scars caused by careless hours in the sun. Blistered backs, arms, legs, noses, and in our camps, various other parts of the anatomy have been subjected to prolonged exposure to the hot and unrelentless sun. I told you so!! I hope that lessons have been learned, but I doubt it. That stunning tan on your friend was not gained by a single two-hour session in the blazing sun, but acquired over a long period.

NATIONAL RALLY REPORT

For some people the 19th National rally held at "Five Acres," Wellington, from 31st December 1970 to 3rd January 1971 inclusive was a new experience. Previously they had listened to remarks from the "oldies" who regularly attend these fixtures, but now they were a part of the action.

Throughout the entire Rally the weatherman was extremely kind and we experienced plenty of sunshine and were almost glad when the odd cloud came across the sun. I am sure that Ad, the Rally Organiser, and his band of committee members were able to breathe a sigh of relief that no rain had come to spoil such a well planned rally. We won't mention here about the weather when the rally finished...

Those members who attended previous rallies at Wellington would have noticed the vast improvements made to the grounds and the amenities. (All a club needs to have likewise work carried out in a relatively short time is a keen worker with a grader.) "Five Acres" must be the only "tiered" club in New Zealand. When visitors come to the ground they arrive at the car park which leads to the caravan site.

Boy, was there a pile of caravans! Then up the first rise to the playing area, club house, and canteen that did a roaring business throughout the rally. In competition was a hot dog stand, a "first" for any rally. Even in the hot weather there were queues for toasted sandwiches, hot dogs and candy floss. The main ablution block was slightly past the playing area for the children, where not only did they have swings, slides, etc., but a Noddy train was well run off its feet!!

Up the next grade to the main camping area where tents of all colours and sizes were pitched. Yet still a further climb to where A.S.C. were camped, impressing everyone with their community cookhouse. Right behind them were the few campers who made use of an old house and its grounds for their headquarters. I expect that a few more tents and caravans could have been placed if the opportunity had arisen, but it would have been quite a squeeze.

Opening of Wellington Rally

Opening of the Wellington Rally

The day that most campers arrived was spent by the Executive members and delegates from the clubs in discussing NZSA business. The major decisions concerning the national movement were taken at this meeting and subsequently reported to sun club members at the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 3rd January, the final day.

As soon as Gavin, the National President, had officially opened the Rally, life at "Five Acres" was dominated by the sports contests. There was volley ball with many exciting matches, hard played miniten, swimming, which was more than welcome in the heat of the afternoon, teniquoit, and table tennis. The games took longer than was anticipated, so after the finals were played there was no time available for the tug of war or extra volley ball that had been scheduled. At the rate we are going we shall certainly be needing a further day just for the sporting events.

The evenings were catered for extremely well and there was a hogmanay party on 31st December, followed by the usual midnight swim. But how wonderful after coming out of the cool water to find a magnificent supper of rice and curry, chicken chow mein, sausage rolls and savouries plus a most welcome cup of tea. That supper will take some beating at future rallies!!!

The adults and wee kiddies were looked after, and I don't think that the youth members had any complaints. There were sporting fixtures for them, plus organised tours, meetings and entertainment in the evening. It must surely have been with a feeling of well being that folk finally pulled up camping equipment and head for either their homes and work, or, for the luckier ones, visits to other clubs. The next rally will be held at the grounds of "Pineglades," Canterbury, and judging from the comments heard there will be a good attendance there too.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

After the fun and games of the rally begins to subside, it is then that members begin to realize that the business sessions of the N.Z.S.A. held during the rally are one of the main reasons that people from all over the country have got together. It is probably very true to say that the sports programme attracts most of the members and to these people a few officials sitting around talking is the height of Dullsville. But nevertheless it is these talks that make everything possible and it is at these talks that the spirit of our movement is really brought to the fore.

What does go on at a N.Z.S.A. meeting??? Usually what does go on affects you! the sun club member, for the next 12 months. All the Clubs in New Zealand meet through their delegates and N.Z.S.A. Executive members and a general combined policy on the questions of the day decided upon.

For example, this year saw a milestone that many of us have been hoping for and working for for years, the establishment of a youth organization within our movement. The youth organizer is now selected by the youth members themselves and he acts as a liaison officer between the youth executive and the national executive as a whole. From what I can gather great strides are already being made within the youth setup and I think that all members will be delighted with the results.

Another very important decision was to transfer the "free beach" work from Wellington to the Auckland area under the capable leadership of Senior Vice President, Jock. This will enable the Wellington members to get on with the job of attending to Miss Bartlett's various misguided attempts to thrust her perverted sense of values on us and the rest of New Zealand.

A great deal of discussion was devoted to the magazine you are now reading and several very important decisions regarding its future were made. I believe the Editor will be covering the points made in this issue, but I would like to stress that all delegates and Executive members present were in full agreement with the discussions made and I personally think the magazine now has an assured future.

Gavin Robeison

Other points ranged from photography down to expense allowances for myself and the magazine editor. The magazine Editor, Joan, does have a lot of out of pocket expenses to meet and the committee in a misguided moment thought that I should have some financial assistance in order that I can visit some of the clubs that are further from my home. This I can assure you I will be doing.

Last year saw the formation of one new club, the Palmerston North Sun Club, and this at my last hearing had about 54 adult members. This clubs is a very lusty infant and I sincerely hope that at least one new club will form this year. We are already a growing force to be reckoned with and every new club fills a gap in the map and makes us more fully represented.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

FREE BEACHES WILL COST US SOMETHING

John N made some very sensible comments on beaches for nudist use in issue No. 55. When we arrive at the stage of having children nude at beach or public baths, if they so wish, then it certainly will point to free beaches later. However, there is a hard core "enemy" in society which opposes nudity of children on almost any occasion. The basis for such antagonism may stem from tradition, from religious isms, from business firms based on swim wear manufacture, or from doubters who are unaware of the ideals of nudism anyway.

Mention is made in John's essay of bikini tops and he says, it seems silly to see them. This is true in one respect, of course, yet in another it is blatantly harmful! Children must associate dress with fun; with keeping warm; or with hiding something. What would an eight year old think of swimming gear essentially?

Togs do not keep a child warm and after a dip they necessarily keep him in a dangerously wet condition near the kidneys and in the crutch. Chronic kidney disease could possibly be traced back to swimming habits. Children do not dress at a beach for fun either even if trying to slap sand out of damp shorts and togs is a typical holiday treat!

Swimming costumes, dears, are given to you to hide yourselves, to cover your genitals no less. This practice is obnoxious and determines later sexual mores and habits for the child mind: they carry over into adolescence and finally, into the insular conservatism of adulthood. As a teacher I am continually confronted with the products of prudery and crass ignorance germinating in society. The bikini and sun suit outfits are well destined to do their jobs - to sow seeds of misunderstanding and hypocrisy early in life.

Free beaches will come but only through nudist members of parent-teacher associations, kindergartens, sports' clubs, women's organisations, and the service clubs such as Rotary. Yet, there must be a guiding hand from within the Sunbathing Association and a thoroughly determined Public Relations committee in the van would spur rank and file members on. Raise a flag somewhere and wave it vigorously, so all of us can get with it!

DOUG'S COMMENTS

There are three letters in our last issue that call for comment.

It is a pity "Norris Luker" hides behind such an obvious nom-de-plume. As it is also so obvious that he is only interested in Playboy, why does he waste his money on our magazine and the message it is trying to put across to the ignorant and doubting public.

I am getting tired of the comments from time to time about bodily contact. It is time that it became plain what is meant by that contact we discourage and even object to. This is the deliberate touching of breasts or pubic areas. Accidental contact of many varieties is so common that nobody can ever take offence. But deliberate contact is a different matter.

Working bees. I've been a member of a club for near on 20 years and I am still working there. If the Anti Organised Working Bees group will kindly pay subscriptions of $50 or more yearly to pay for contractors to do all the work for them I will be happy to lay down my tools. But this would not give the members a sense of owning the place. Those who work take a pride in their achievements and gain a much better outlook to the club and its amenities. We are not trying to encourage the tourist idea in members. We are members' clubs, not proprietary. We go to the club for a rest - yes, a MENTAL rest. Judging by the few paunches I have seen at times a lot more male members would find some work of benefit to them.

To sum up, the only way to encourage members to help is to have someone on the job first. In most cases members will not start a job themselves, but need a leader who knows exactly what is to be done. In winter you like company when working - so let's have more official working days - in the cooler months, with loafing in summer.

- Doug. R. Cousins (Wellington)

SOCIAL NUDITY

One of our consistent claims, as nudists, is that the practice of social nudity ensures that our children are brought up without any body taboo and, in consequence, they are far more balanced human beings when they reach maturity. On the face of it this would seem to be a fairly reasonable claim.

However, in his fascinating book "Man and Woman" Dr Karl H. Wrage whilst strongly advocating nudity within the family, rejects social nudism. He asserts that no immodesty is involved in the family, but that social nudism is undesirable because it involves the exposure of one's intimate parts to strangers. He further asserts that young people encounter problems later in life, in nudist camps, they have been able to "look but not touch" and have been obliged to conceal their sexual excitement. To quote him, "As might have been predicted, this causes a profound conflict, for the mores of the camp demand that emotion be neutralised, that the erotic be separated from the genital and that sex be isolated." He goes on to argue that where the rules of the nudist camp do not hold, and the erotic is not separated from the genital, the danger of promiscuity is great.

Now I doubt whether most practising nudists would accept all Dr Wrage's points as they stand. Most of us know from experience that the erotic and genital are indeed separated quite naturally in club life, and eroticism (sexual stimulus) is largely a matter of context. Thus in the context of club activity, a normally sexual man is unlikely to be sexually aroused by the sight of a naked woman who is swimming, playing volleyball, sunbathing or cooking sausages. We know from our own observation and experience that overt sexual arousal rarely if ever occurs in the context of club life. We would all agree that it may be a very different thing if the same man meets the same woman, clothed or otherwise, in some secluded romantic spot by moonlight, i.e. in a different environment.

However, Dr Wrage's "look but not touch" argument seems to me to merit very close examination by nudists with children. It would seem fair to assert that direct physical contact is largely avoided in our clubs - this seems to be an unwritten rule. Of course inadvertent bodily contact undoubtedly occurs in the swimming pool and on the volleyball court. In his book "The Naked Ape" Desmond Morris stresses what an important part the avoidance of body-to-body contact plays in our normal (non-nudist) life as a means of damping down our sexual stimuli. So the "don't touch" problem would seem to exist whether or not we are clothed, though perhaps not to the same extent in each case.

It would be stupid to deny the pleasure which bodily contact with another human being can inspire. What needs examination is whether or not this pleasure is necessarily of a sexual nature. I suggest that it is not necessarily so. Consider a mother suckling her baby or a parent, male or female, cuddling a naked child. The tactile sensations in each case are highly pleasurable and the emotions are involved. But this pleasure is surely not specifically sexual in origin.

Similarly, within the confines of a nudist club, the bodily contact involved when romping with other children - not necessarily one's own - is undoubtedly pleasant but again not sexual. To extend the argument consider the flank-to-flank contact involved in a mixed, crowded sauna. The tactile sensations from such contact are pleasant, but in the context of friendly chatter are unlikely to be specifically sexually orientated.

However, the dividing line between the innocently sensual and the specifically sexual is not easily drawn and probably varies from person to person. Therefore to allow, or encourage, more body-to-body contact in our clubs is not without risk. But so long as each of us is alive to the possible pitfalls, I see no reason for any absolute prohibition, tacit or otherwise, of such contacts.

In his letter in issue No. 56 of your magazine, Derek of Waikato rightly stresses that this is a subject which we must discuss openly and frankly amongst ourselves. Only in this way will we be able to get the matter into perspective. Most of us are fully aware when a given situation affects us sexually - and we are therefore in a position to avoid any similar situations in the future. If we find the actions of others - however well intentioned - to be disturbing, then let us tell them frankly that we would prefer them not to repeat such actions. One would have to be pretty thick skinned not to accept such a request.

Let me repeat that there are risks involved, because each individual's response to a given situation will be different. But bearing in mind Dr Wrage's argument, this is something which we must obviously examine very closely if we are to remain certain that nudism will help our children to grow into mature and balanced adults. We have to decide which is likely to be more harmful in the long run, the effects of a "look but don't touch" policy, or the possible risk of erotic sensation if more body-to-body contact is permitted.

Finally, let me stress that social nudism alone will not necessarily produce a balanced adult - it must be backed up by sound moral teaching and example.

Yours

- P.H.

K.V.C.

Are they men or women? Dunno, they got no clothes on.

JEEPERS - PEEPERS

Let's face the bare facts, we're a minority group, but still regarded by most as an odd minority. The majority of our readership is composed of peepers - magazine peepers that is. This term is not employed in a derogatory sense. e.g. How many Playboy peepers are actual playboys, or playgirls, for that matter! We couldn't afford to be anyway.

After magazine-peepers there are a few who take their curiosity further. They must have a field-study. What is the usual reaction by nudists to Peeping Toms? "My God, there are some peepers with binoculars, let's sneak up and catch them. Let's take a big stick and thrash them," and so on.

Myself, I think this is entirely the wrong approach. If they are chased away, they will most likely regale their friends with tales of how they saw some oddbods, men, women and especially children romping around naked. All this probably viewed from a high tree about half a mile away. Chase them off and they'll return next week with more mates. I was chased off apple orchards 30 or 40 years ago - but I still returned!

Would the better approach go something like this... "Why are you watching our club?" "Just curious, just for a laugh."

"O.K. We were all curious once, come with me and meet the bunch. You'll get a better view."

"Don't want to!"

"But we insist. Don't mind the slashers, we only use them for cutting down undergrowth."

Peeping Tom reluctantly accompanies us back to the club, to see all the gang at close quarters.

"By the way, Tom, we don't usually insist, but you must get into nudist uniform - you were a trespasser you know."

What can Peeping Tom tell his mates now. He went to a nudist camp. How was he dressed? As a nudist! So what!

If Peeping Tom or Jill is a junior - so much the better. What will he tell Mum? What will he think of Mum next time she says, "Don't come into the bathroom. I'm not decent." He'll be more grown-up in at least one respect than the majority of Mums and Dads.

I know a joker who would gladly run up and down Queen Street in his birthday suit - if he could. I know a lady who would swing from the one tree of One Tree Hill as naked as a sausage - if only she could. The joker has only one leg. The lady has an artificial arm.

I thank God I am complete. Do you? Strip off and look. You and I were born naked, isn't it odd!

- John H. Worth

REPLY TO JOCK

After reading the latest N.Z. Naturist I cannot let it go without passing some comment on Jock's article regarding bi-annual rallies. Admittedly they were his personal thoughts but our advice to Jock and his family is to stay at home, but still let us have the annual rallies for those who are not fortunate enough in having grounds like Oranui where they can spend their summer holidays.

We also take this opportunity to compliment you and your committee on the marked improvement both material-wise and delivery date of the N.Z. Naturist. We find that the N.Z. Naturist can be picked up on numerous occasions and still find an article of interest. Leave the pin-ups to the Sun and Health.

Yours faithfully,

- Ian and Jennifer

FREE BEACHES

Anything to do with free beaches gets a good press these days. Jock had a chat with Susan Maxwell, whose column the "Young Scene," appears in the N.Z. Herald and the following paragraph appeared last month:-

Bare...

Despite the vocal objections of a nameless Wellingtonienne, New Zealand naturists should soon officially achieve the freedom of a beach where they may expose themselves to all but the contempt of those who do not share their convictions.

Of this I am assured by an executive of the New Zealand Sunbathing Association.

For the last 10 years, he says, Auckland nudists have spent long, hot summers at a beach north of Leigh. "It's common knowledge in the area," he adds. "And nobody's ever complained - non-nudists are even joining in. People are starting to realise that there's nothing dirty about their own bodies.

This is evident by the growing popularity of nudist clubs. Between Kamo and Invercargill (brrr) are 16 organised groups.

The largest and longest-established of these groups basks on a 26-acre block near Henderson. Pasted to a wall in the 'retournons a nature' zone is a poster that grins - "don't worry about the neighbours - they think this is a church group."

NEWS FROM THE CLUBS IN N.Z.

NORTHERN SUN SEEKERS CLUB INC.

Members of New Zealand's northernmost club had a busy Christmas, with visitors from as far away as Wellington (rally refugees?) camping at the grounds. Those who dropped in on us included Marion and Roy (Waikato Outdoor Society), Alex and Bobby (also Waikato Outdoor Society), Alistair and Marilyn (Wellington Sun Club), Ron and Wendy (Auckland Outdoor Health Club), Bob and Ines (Auckland Outdoor), Tony and Vicky (a Wellington Sun Club couple who "discovered" THREE ditches while negotiating the track to the grounds), John and June (Auckland Sun Club) and, last but not least, Bev and Owen (Auckland Sun Club) who came up twice and in the process gained us two new member families. We were well treated by the weather, although tropical storm "Rosie" caused some alarm and despondency and demolished one elderly tent. The pool was in almost constant use. It was one of the club's first projects, preceding even the building of the toilet, and it has proved our greatest asset.

An interesting sight was the number of red-tailed young Aucklanders who discovered that Northland sunshine, unscreened by the smog of industrial progress, is a force to be treated with caution.

We have been having a good deal of useful publicity lately. It began with a letter from a non-member to the editor of the local paper criticising the police for removing two topless bikini girls from Waihi beach. The secretary replied, defending the police and attacking the "Mrs Grundy" who made the original complaint. This in turn was followed by an editorial supporting the movement (note editor, copy sent to NZSA public relations officer - may be worth reprinting in mag), and, of course, the television coverage of the free beach issue and the David Frost interview. All this has prompted a number of inquiries, a very pleasing result.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB

For the fourth time members of the Auckland Sun Club made a trip to Thames Valley for gold hunting. But for all the gold that the 27 adults and 16 children found it could almost be called a wasted trip. Almost, except for all the pleasure just looking, for the comradeship that isn't experienced at the club-grounds, for the singsong after the barbecue in the evenings. We can always say, better luck next time, knowing that finding the gold isn't the main reason why we go on these interesting and most worthwhile trips.

Sports Day at Oranui again offered us a challenge, and this is a big occasion for all clubs here and we look forward to it immensely. No comments here about the weather??

For some of our members it was a first for them to spend the whole weekend away at the beach where they were able to be unclothed the whole time. The atmosphere there was so different from the club and again the friendly spirit prevailed, making this a most pleasing experience.

Swim nights are back again and by the attendance at our first night it was obvious that the members had been looking forward to this event again.

Plans and discussions are already underway for a good attendance at Pineglades this Rally. We are having a slight problem as how to get our fridge across that strip of water. Anyone any brilliant ideas?

OTAGO SUN AND HEALTH CLUB

The voice of Otago is announcing the fact that we are still in existence and thriving very well. At the time of writing, the sun is going full blast and the frustrated workers are envying their holiday-making club mates.

Our membership is growing, 31 adults and 19 children. The usual preseason jobs have been done early on, the main item being the painting of the swimming pool, a great improvement.

We thank our northern friends for keeping us up to date with their activities. Happy sunning to you all.

CANTERBURY SUN AND HEALTH CLUB

Over the last few months our members have been making the most of the predominantly fine sunny weather.

Opening Day was held in October, and as usual was celebrated with the club birthday cake beautifully decorated with swimming pool and pine trees.

Visitors' Day was in November and was unfortunately a dull overcast day, which did however make it not quite such a penance to remain clothed. This gave many members the opportunity to bring interested relations and friends to see the place where we spend so much of our leisure time.

Santa Claus made his entry on the back of a scooter laden with presents for the hundreds of children who later had a grand feed of jelly and ice cream.

The introduction of a ladder for the miniten competition has done a lot to encourage newer members to become enthusiastic challengers of the old hands.

This summer has brought many new members to the Club, most joining through friends, but quite a few as a result of advertisements in the local papers. If any readers of this magazine want further information we should be pleased to hear from them.

WAIKATO SUN CLUB

After merely "existing" for quite a number of years W.O.S. has started living. The last half of 1970 brought us more members and much more social life than in any other past year. We now own our 50 acre grounds and this will encourage improvements to be made.

Visitors to the Waikato will shortly be able to enjoy a swim in our pool which is very nearly completed. A new drive-in has been bulldozed and "rotten rock" put down to be consolidated.

The kitchen now boasts an electric cooker, tables, chairs and smaller things of luxury. Our cold shower is in constant use and plans for hot and cold water plus new toilets are all under way.

W.O.S. was paid an early visit by Santa Claus on Dec. 5th last year and was greeted enthusiastically by some 25 children and their parents who were enjoying the first Xmas party ever to be held by the W.O.S.

The New Year brought a terrific surge of enthusiasm as many of our members visited other clubs during the holiday period and brought back ideas that will improve our grounds. Our next newsletter should contain many more finished projects.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB

Now that over a year has passed since the formation of the Palmerston North Sun Club we can be more than pleased in what has been accomplished.

Our total membership stands at over seventy. If every applicant had been accepted our membership would be double. Having decided at the start to build our club on the family group we now see that this was the best plan. Nearly all our new members have been young married couples and without exception become very keen club members.

With the numbers of young children in the club the nudist movement in the Manawatu will be firmly established for the future. With the surrounding population of Palmerston North and district we can be as large a club as we wish.

Our Christmas dance and social in December was a great success. There were visitors from Wanganui and Gavin and Gaynor from Wellington. Our members have spent many happy, sunny days at our spacious natural grounds.

As the Club president, in my dealings with the public, I have been open in what I stand for and have found it has more than paid off in good will and understanding. The success our Club has had in this short time has been through the direct approach. We as nudists must stop making excuses for ourselves. Any family groups or couples interested in social nudism please write:

The Secretary, P.O. Box 980, Palmerston North - and join the happy people.

HAWKES BAY SUN CLUB

After being hosts for members of Auckland Sun Club on their return trip to Auckland after the Rally, we answered their open invitation to come to Auckland. A team of us arrived for the weekend that A.O.H.C. had their sports day. On the Saturday we spent the afternoon at A.S.C. grounds, and that evening were entertained in one of the member's home. The following day saw us arriving for the sports and we managed to put up a good team for the volleyball and didn't let the side down. Our entries in the miniten managed to get through to the semi-finals. The barbecue that evening really made a complete day of it, and we are hoping for a return invite next year.

We are now looking forward to the visit to the Gisborne Club where we have been informed a terrific weekend is planned. This visiting clubs in between rallies and having them come to our grounds certainly strengthens the bonds of friendship that is so common amongst nudist members and we look forward to seeing any visitors at all times.

AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB

Since the Christmas holidays which were enjoyed by all, A.O.H.C. has been busy hosting a sports day which was well attended by the other two Auckland clubs, from Whangarei and Napier. This annual event is much looked forward to and by the number of events in the sports events we need more than the one day. The barbecue in the evening gave a decided finish to a very enjoyable day.

Joining forces with A.S.C. a strong contingent spent a weekend at our "free beach" and much as one enjoys their club grounds it does make a pleasant change to have an outing such as this.

By the time this goes to press we will be the proud owners of a telephone booth to be erected in a central part of the grounds.

Good response to newspaper advertising this season with an average of 20 couples per ad.

N.Z.S.A. NOTES

20TH NATIONAL RALLY

This event will be held at the grounds of the Canterbury Sun and Health Club Inc., the dates being 30th December 1971 to 3rd January 1972, with the NZSA Executive meeting on 29th December.

Members of northern clubs are warned to be sure they pencil in their boat bookings immediately. The new "Rangatira" may help ease the number of berths and car space required but it will not cure the holiday crush problems. It is easier to cancel later than try to get in when there are no vacancies left.

NEW PRICE FOR OUR MAGAZINE

This is announced elsewhere in this issue. We would advise all postal subscribers who have already paid ahead that they will not be required to pay extra. Their present subscriptions will stand and on renewal the new rates will apply.

SEASON GREETINGS

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many readers who sent festive greetings. Their wishes are warmly reciprocated. The number of them precludes us replying individually to each one.

PAMPHLETS

We are sorry that we have been unable to send many readers the complete set of American pamphlets that we advertise. Something has gone wrong with the delivery of further supplies. When we do receive them we shall advise all readers through this column of our magazine.

OVERSEAS MAGAZINES

Back issues of the Australian magazine "Solar" are available from this office at 15 cents each. We have 20 different issues on hand at present. The English "Sun and Health" (regular edition only) is still available at 70 cents a copy or $7.00 a year of 12 issues. Unfortunately no other magazines are held at this office, partly as it would appear that there are less than half a dozen good naturist magazines with English text left in the world today. We regret that we are not prepared to accept requests for "Sun and Health" from Australian readers until this magazine is officially approved by the authorities for resale in Australia.

MISS BARTLETT'S PETITION TO PARLIAMENT

This Association presented a submission in reply to the above petitions asking Parliament to exercise greater control and censorship over books, magazines, films, etc. This was presented by our Overseas Correspondent, David Jenkinson, supported by two lady members of the Wellington club. We received a very good hearing, and opportunity was taken in answer to one question to mention our desire for free beaches.

PERC. COUSINS TRUST FUND

Our greatest boost in this quarter has been the excellent response to the collection taken during the recent most successful National Rally held in Wellington. We extend grateful thanks to all donors for their contributions. Last balance $1127.75; Club levies $6.35; Bank Interest $22.47; Investment Interest $5.35; Rally collection $41.55; Sundry donations $1.65; New balance $1205.12.

AUSTRALIA

We are very pleased to advise that the Australian Naturist Federation has now been admitted to affiliation of the International Naturist Federation. For our many Australian readers the address of the ANF is P.O. Box 31, Pakenham East, Victoria 3810.

At the time of writing there are 15 clubs affiliated to the ANF and the remaining clubs are being encouraged to apply for affiliation. But the ANF recognises that too little is being done to form new clubs. Of the ones that are now in existence too many have large memberships. where some members travel long distances to attend, whereas the formation of new clubs would help spread the good word of naturism and make the present clubs more manageable. The ANF suggests anything up to 30 or 40 clubs as the ideal for Australia!

The country is full of surprising contrasts. In one State alone we know of one club with a broad attitude to cameras but their neighbour is the reverse. Sites vary widely, some of them being gorges with hardly any space for laying down anything flat. Knowing what we do of the problems of acquiring land in New Zealand we do not envy our brothers across the Tasman in trying to obtain land for new clubs.

The recent Rally/Convention held at Helios in Victoria was described as terrific - for four of the official days there was an inch of rain each day. For the other four days there was half an inch of rain each day!!! Tennis was washed out, volleyball was played over two lorry loads of sawdust and table tennis was in order indoors. Incidentally, the clubhouse is 100' x 40' - and this Rally proved it was not too big.

INF HOLIDAY GUIDE

We learn that there will be no new edition of this guide until 1972. As long as supplies hold out at INF headquarters we shall continue to supply the 1970 edition until the next becomes available.

PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB THOUGHTS

The idea of a Sun Club is the relaxed way members can enjoy themselves. Some Secretaries are always trying to run everyone at the grounds. This can lead to members not returning or very few visits by them. If members feel they can arrive at the club grounds without any pressure on them they will enjoy their club days with their families. Our experience in the Palmerston North Club with all new members has been to leave them alone and they will join the other members when they are ready. This has always been within half an hour. A relaxed club can do this but not one under pressure. If after a time a member has not stripped it would be their mental outlook. Club members could help these people to overcome their shyness.

The question of single men in clubs comes around again and again. Many single men wonder why they are not accepted. The main reason is that a sun club is built on the family group. If every single man who applied was accepted there would soon be an uneven balance of sexes. The family groups and couples who are the sunclub would soon be gone. As members of the Palmerston North Sun Club my family and myself enjoy every visit to our club.

NELSON - FUTURE VENUE?

I have found the ideal place for future rallies... in Nelson. It's called Quinney's Bush. Situated 34 miles from Nelson township, these 14 acres of ground are open to the public and the only cost is a donation. Besides the usual amenities they have plenty of amusements such as 7 flying foxes of different sizes catering for all ages, 2 roundabouts, 1 giddy wheel, seesaws, swings, and an upside down wheel, plus a river right by, with water going to various depths. I spent a few hours there the other day and it went through my mind, what an ideal place for a rally. There need be no organisation for one could camp anywhere as the land is flat. There is a flat centre for all games, and there is so much to see and do.

After some hesitation I tried a flying fox and it was really interesting. I even had a go on the big one and that was something. I tried the upside down wheel and what an experience being upside down whilst still turning around. I must admit that I didn't stay on there long. The children were really occupied and there was no need for them to have anything organised. I think the spaciousness of the grounds added to the charms of the place. There is nothing that need be done to the place, so I hope we can persuade the owner to let us use it. What an ideal place for the next Youth Rally. It is on the way to Nelson and being in the South Island, would encourage the teenagers from the Southern Clubs to attend as their expenses wouldn't be as great as having to go over to Wellington and then back to Christchurch.

Not too far away from these grounds is the most ideal place for a hike. The hike itself takes about an hour and a half. There are four rivers to be crossed, hills to climb, caves to be explored and a waterfall when one reaches the summit. It isn't too strenuous but is most enjoyable. My four year old daughter did it with no complaints and she didn't hold us back too long either. I wouldn't mind being included in the party if they could be persuaded to camp in Nelson.

Then there is the Nelson club grounds to be visited. As this is a reasonably new club one can't expect too much. They have plenty of acreage but not a great deal cleared as yet. Lack of finance is holding them back. We went out with club members and spent a couple of hours there. After a walk over their property we came back via the stream and ate all the blackberries from the bushes lining it. Something distracted my attention for a minute and the next thing I found myself lying in the stream! My host wasn't caring whether I was dead or alive as he was too busy picking blackberries. (I tried suing the club for damages sustained but as they haven't any money anyway I didn't do too good.) By this time I was dying for a cup of tea but as there was no water I wasn't offered one. We had cold drinks with us so we helped the children drink that instead. I didn't meet many of the Nelson club members at a film evening arranged for us but those I did meet were very friendly and my host & hostess (Peter and Lesley) made me more than welcome.

Well that's Nelson. And I do hope that people will visit these places and enjoy themselves as much as I.
