HOW NOT TO GET SUNBURNT.

Next time you find yourself getting sunburnt and rub on sun tan oil right there and then, think what you're doing - providing the fat for frying yourself!

If you want to avoid sunburn do this: have a bath the night before you go out to the club. Put a teaspoonful of peanut or similar oil in the water. That's all that's necessary. The oil will work its way into your skin by the time you're in the sun, it will have enough extra oil in it to resist sunburn.

It works! Karin and I do it.

"ODD BODS."

The Dominion, Wellington's morning paper made reference to us recently, by inferring that we are "odd bods", the item being quoted later in slightly different form by the 0tago Daily Times.

It goes to indicate the attitude of mind of those who so far have not given our way of life a trial and how we can be censored for having the courage to break away from conventional thinking. On the surface, it can well appear that we are a little odd, but that is only because the conventions are driven deeply into us and we cannot imagine any sense in flouting then. Yet, strange as it may appear to our critics, there are thousands upon thousands of nudists throughout the world and the movement is growing steadily. Why? Surely we must agree there must be something in it, for the members are not the least bit odd. Quite the contrary in fact, as our members include the clergy, the professions, working folk and others, who with their wives and families constitute an ordinary cross section of our populace and who are respected in their various fields.

Could it be that our critics are wrong? If improved physical and mental health are any signs, if a love of the outdoors is assured, if happier families are anything to go by, if less delinquency is any guide, then maybe nudists are not so odd as we might be led to think.

However, all the argument in the world will not necessarily convince the doubter anything so satisfactorily an actual visit to a club, where the camaraderie, good manners and evident enjoyment of all concerned cannot fail to impress, even though the members be unclothed.

We have nothing to hide and nothing of which to be ashamed. We know that by being members of the nudist movement we have something very worth while, that money cannot buy and we also know that many, many other people would benefit from it once they overcame those first few prejudices. Perhaps you too would like to find out something about us. The directory of clubs at the back of this magazine will help you. Why not contact your nearest club today? There is nothing to lose but a lot to gain and you could then see for yourself, like so many have done before you, that there are no more "odd bods" in a nudist club than will be found in any other club or group of people.

Sun & Air

By Ken (Canterbury Sun & Health club Inc.)

A sceptical friend once remarked to me, "Why do you nudists advocate Sun Bathing and Air Bathing? What is there to running around naked that I can't benefit from in my shirt and shorts? All the sun ever did to me was give my back blisters!"

Well, I got to thinking... what does the Sun & Air do for us? I fished out my text-books and here is what I told my friend...

"Our skin is really just a radiator. Its' main function is to regulate the temperature of the body. In hot weather perspiration dissipates heat and cools the skin as it evaporates, the higher the temperature the more the sweat.

The wearing of clothing is chiefly an artificial aid in the regulation of the body temperature, retarding heat loss because it retains air between garments. Therefore, suitable clothing should be selected which will not offer interference to normal bodily functioning.

So when we shed our clothes in the hot weather and expose our bodies to the air, we are only assisting nature to perform her job. Fresh air moving over the skin evaporates perspiration, cooling the body, stimulates the circulation of the blood to the skin, ensures good ventilation of the lungs and helps to produce restful sleep.

Sunlight has many beneficial effects on the body; some of these are:

1.)

Warmth from the Infra Red rays.

2.)

Production of tan thus protecting the skin from excessive burning.

3.)

Bacteria are destroyed by the action of the Ultra Violet light.

4.)

Glands are stimulated, in particular the Thyroid which regulates the functioning of the body.

5.)

Blood production is promoted, wounds heal better, appetite is increased.

More important than any of these valuable contributions to health though, is one of the most remarkable changes caused by the effect of Ultra Violet light on the skin.

This light playing on the skin produces a substance we call Vitamin D which is essential to the manufacture of bone. The lack of Vitamin D in the body brings about the condition called Rickets in young children. The medical treatment for Rickets includes exposure to the sunlight.

So you see just why our nudist children look and are so much healthier in body and in mind.

To sum it all up, we have seen that exposure of the body to the sun and air, assists in the control of temperature, stimulates blood circulation, produces essential Vitamin D, destroys bacteria, stimulates mind and body, creates better appetites, better sleep and promotes a general feeling of fitness.

Nudism then is not just practised by a body of people content to run around naked for the fun of it; we know how beneficial it can be and what is more it costs nothing."

I suppose, dear readers, that you are wondering whether I convinced my sceptic friend... Well as I write this I can see him just about to serve at the Volley Ball Court, and he's got nary a stitch on!!

If you haven't taken the plunge yet, maybe I have helped. Why not try it... you'll never regret it!

Sorry this arrived too late for the Rally.

To the Office Bearers &
members of the N.Z.S.A.                          24th. Dec. 1959.

Dear Friends,

Well aware of the success of your previous National Rallies we take this opportunity to extend to you on the eve of the eighth of those annual events our sincere greetings.

We know that the Australian Sunlovers will be with you in spirit on these first three days of the year 1960. We cannot but admire the drive and perseverance which alone make an undertaking of this kind possible and we must confess, not without regret, that here in Australia we are still a long way from being able to follow your example.

We at Solar are determined to make a strong effort in the coming year to secure the support of our readers and friends in this matter, which eventually must and shall result in a National Federation of the Australian Clubs.

In the meantime we are looking forward to hear all about the big event and wish you once more every success for your 8th National Rally.

Faithfully Yours,

   E. H. King.

   Editor of SOLAR.

The Editor wishes to thank all those kind people who sent seasons greetings to this office. It was only pressure on our time that prevented acknowledging all of them. May 1960 be a year of prosperity and real happiness for everybody, with the movement gaining more acceptance than ever before.

NEW ZEALAND SUNBATHING ASSOCIATION

With a growing movement such as ours it is only right to expect changes and improvements. This is certainly the case, following the N.Z.S.A. meetings at the last National Rally. These were most harmonious and co-operation seemed to be the keynote. Perc chaired the executive meetings and his opening remarks emphasised the necessity of maintaining the high reputation already achieved and steadily building on firm foundations. Several adjournments were necessary to cope with all the business, but executive and delegates alike willingly gave of their time and energy to promoting the aims and ideals of the movement. The creation of new offices and the donation of additional trophies are signs of growth and interest not to be despised. Here is a list of appointments for the present year.

Reviews.

Considerable discussion took place regarding the printing of our Review, but in view of the present circulation, we reluctantly postponed this move. Consequently we look to everyone to boost our sales so that we can reconsider printing next year in a more favourable light. There is a demand for our publication through the shops. Do your best to place it there.

Another step towards improving our position is by soliciting advertising. Few magazines exist without this and it is not too soon for us to start thinking about some for this publication. Here again, we may not be able to entice Sun Creams and Insect Repel1ants but somebody night be interested at the low rates we quote at present. Prices range from 30/- for a half page to a minimum space of 1/16 of a page at 3/6 including approximately 20 words. Illustrations would be slightly more. In time it will be possible to make advertising pay for this Review, so if anyone can start us off, please let us knew smartly. Those inside covers are available and small ads or space fillers can be arranged. Can we help you to help us?

Letterheads.

As present stocks are getting low, a new and improved Letterhead is being prepared and we are happy to acknowledge a stylised design for an emblem prepared by Bob of Wellington. This emblem suggests a rising sun above fern leaves with the initials N.Z.S.A. between and is something quite different. Colours will be maroon on light green.

Our Youth.

Several splendid efforts have been made throughout the world to ensure and maintain the interest of our young people, especially since the visit of 60 German teenagers to the 6th International Congress at Woburn Abbey 2 years ago. The appointment of Ken of Christchurch as our own Youth Organiser is ensuring that N.Z. recognises its responsibility in this direction. In Ken we have a man keen on youth work and who is not without experience in promoting junior interest.

This issue sees the commencement of a Junior Section, edited by Ken and we expect ALL parents to make sure their children read this and take an interest in the things Ken is trying to develop. Clubs, too, can help by encouraging their juniors to get together and organise their own activities and have a definite voice in the club's affairs. Make them feel it is their club and that they are wanted. Ken has set the ball rolling with some good ideas. All he needs is your support. The N.Z.S.A. is solidly behind him.

A Para on Photographs.

Hey, there, trigger-happy types! As a bunch I've pretty well had you, but I'm bound to admit that you have your uses sometimes and when I need illustrations for articles in overseas magazines is one of those times. So here are one or two points insisted on by one of the foremost American Nudist magazines.

For black and white pictures: these must be at least 5" x 7", g1ossy finish; sharp focus and good contrast. Don't send spotted or otherwise damaged prints. If you do your own developing or know the person who does it make sure you get the maximum contrast which gives movement to your picture. Say what the photo is about - the fuller a caption the better.

Colour: 2¼" square or larger, transparencies only. Large figure images, good colour balance; the use of supplementary lighting is strongly urged; now pubic areas shown; brilliance and clarity are the first requisites. These photos are used for covers. I would think that the chance of one being accepted is fairly remote as there's a certain amount of specialisation in this and I doubt whether many shots taken 'on spec' would be worth submitting.

We do need good photos to illustrate naturism in New Zealand, for overseas naturists are just as interested in what we arc doing, as vice versa, especially as our articles hit them in their off season. So if you have a good photo please let me see it; subject to the demands of house-keeping and beer money, I might even pay for it!

Gerald P.R.O.

The 9th National Rally.

We are pleased to announce that the next big get-together will be held in the grounds of the Wanganui Sun Club from the 31st. Dec. to 2nd. Jan. 1961. The N.Z.S.A. Executive will meet on the 30th. Dec. and endeavour to dispose of all business before the Rally proper starts. Details will be given later.

Newspaper Clippings.

This is just a reminder to everybody to send any newspaper or other clippings reporting nudism, unfavourably or favourably, to our National P.R.O. at once, so that action, if necessary, may be taken. Post to Gerald Wakely, P.0.Box 2702, Auckland, and include name of paper and date, AND PLEASE ACT QUICKLY.

Remember Mary who visited us a couple of years ago?

We were pleased to hear from her a while back at the tail end of a trip through America. She had visited a number clubs there and was looking forward to visiting some of the lush clubs in Florida before returning home. She sends friendliest greetings to all who remember her, stating that all she met were so nice that it would be invidious to name anyone in particular.

Thank you, Mary, and we liked you too.

Nudist Films.

It appears that the "get-rich-quick-boys" are using nudism as another gimmick to make the dollars roll in. The latest effort is American, entitled, "The Naked Venus" and is showing only in 2nd. rate theatres in the States. So far as nudism is concerned, it is phony from start to finish and does nothing more than exploit nakedness under the guise of publicising our movement.

When you read such advertising as "an honest approach to a daring subject," and "a beautiful and extraordinary love story... about a girl who joins an American nudist colony," the producers rather give the game away how little they know about us and how much they are prepared to say to entice the money into the box office.

Another film currently showing in the U.S.A. is entitled, "Back to Nature". This, according to a reviewer, is authentic, but in every other respect, "ten carat flop." Ah well, if they do come to N.Z., which is a remote possibility, you have been warned.

Two other films are of interest and can help us indirectly, for these introduce nudity in a completely satisfactory and acceptable manner. These are a German contribution called, "Lot in Sodom" and an American entitled, "Adam and Eve." Both are based on the biblical stories and treat the whole subject reverently and sincerely. Nudity is employed to suggest sensuality and corruption as well as beauty. The factual approach, without stressing the nudity angle, makes for acceptable fare and neither of these films have met with opposition from any quarter as a result. It is certainly pleasing to know that public acceptance of nudity is improving, which only bears out the contention we have been making for years, that in its proper place and under acceptable conditions nudity is not vulgar or open to any sound criticism at all. Misunderstood as we are, we can take heart at this trend.

And finally, we have just heard of another film depicting the unclothed form that is being shown in America entitled "Uirapuru". This is an artistic re-creation of a Brazilian legend, using natives as actors. It is nearly perfect in its technical proficiency, which is amazing in view of the dangers faced by the producer, Sam Zebba, in travelling 18,000 miles to film the legend. The heroine wears an apron typical of the tribe, but all male performers are entirely nude.

Don't be such a prude!

8th National Rally

HELD IN THE GROUNDS OF THE AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB INC.

By Perc. Cousins.

Despite unfavourable weather, both before and after, all expectations were exceeded during the official three days of the Rally itself, as several pink and red bodies of new-comers testified. Maybe the sunny days had something to do with it, but it was pleasant to observe the happy atmosphere that permeated all the proceedings, business, pleasure, sports and everything.

Our hosts own 6 acres of a 25 acre site, all of which they hope to eventually acquire. Growth consists of wattle, pine, manuka, ferns and gorse. Under the trees and dotted about the grounds were soon 34 tents and half a dozen baches owned by local members. It was as well there was plenty of room, for there must have been close on 200 persons there throughout the three days and most had brought their own cars. Several acres had been cleared and levelled, leaving plenty of room for games, sunbathing and the groups that were to be found chatting under the trees.

As the weather was hot, their small pool was popular all day and a canteen right alongside did a thriving business. Two outside coppers supplied hot water continually and morning and afternoon tea was dispensed by an able-bodied committee of ladies, in a large club-house, still in the process of building. The kiddies were well catered for and it can be said that the organisation was excellent throughout, even to the milk and the morning paper being brought into the camp every day.

Upon arrival, visitors checked in with the registrar, and upon payment of their admission fees, received a name tag to wear round their necks and duplicated sheets including reports and balance sheets and complete instructions of what was on, where and when, and also where everything could be found and all about it. People came from most parts of the country, the team from Christchurch setting a new pattern by all arriving in blue shorts and white T shirts with their Pine tree badge prominently displayed. 6 of the 8 clubs were represented, the Wellington contingent numbering over 30. Many locals travelled to and fro daily and every corner of the developed area was put to some use.

History has been made for there were more nude people in one place at one time than has ever been seen before in this country. To some of us, watching the movement grow, it was a thrilling sight certainly gave encouragement for past labours and efforts.

While folk were getting acquainted or trying their skill at clock golf, tenikoit etc. the N.Z.S.A. executive met, not once, but several times, to dispose of the business accumulated during the year. Among the routine matters discussed, several important decisions were made, all indicative of the progress of a growing movement. Outstanding was the appointment of a Youth 0raniser, to fall into line with overseas moves in this direction. He will also edit a Junior Section in the Review and be responsible for guiding junior activities in all the clubs.

Another "first" was the broadcast of a 20 minute session over the main radio station, the announcer who taped the programme out at the grounds appearing in the nude too. This, together with press publicity, resulted in enquiries for the host club.

The Perc. Cousins Tenikoit Trophy was retained by the hosts after a well fought battle with the Christchurch team. and the latter club narrowly won the Mowlem Inter-Club club membership trophy from Wellington. Actua1ly Wellington had admitted more new members during the year, but as the award is made on a population basis, they had to give way on this award.

The evening programmes were all held outdoors, fortunately thoroughly enjoyed, as the evenings were calm and mild. Films happily recalled memories of previous activities on the first night and a discussion session which was free for all provided a profitable evening on the second night. However, it was the third and final evening that struck an entirely new note and was voted a good innovation and a most enjoyable interlude. A whole sheep and half a pig with lots of potatoes were cooked in a large pit dug into the ground filled with hot stones, native fashion, and covered with cabbage leaves and wet sacks. After a few hours, when the food was lifted out, it was delicious and although most had had an evening meal, the platters were cleaned and it was an inwardly contented crowd that sang the final songs around the fire.

The 8th National Rally concluded, after a few short speeches and the presentation of trophies, with Auld Lang Syne around the brilliant campfire, everyone feeing that this mingling of members, exchange of ideas and experiences was indeed a fine idea. As folk gradually moved off to their tents and cars, some were faced with the prospect of returning to their homes and work on the following day, while others more fortunate, were able to look forward to a longer stay. Truly it was a memorable Rally, one to be relived by movies and colour slides during the winter months to cone and one which marked yet another step forward of the nudist movement in New Zealand.

Highlights of the "Big Do."

The announcer from 1YA who came out to tape the session that was later broadcast, noticed an Aucklander the other side of the tenikoit court clad only in a floppy white hat and a name tag. As he suddenly recognised him, he commented, "I know that chap, but I would never have known him in a hat."

During the Discussion Session, at which everyone was free to speak, the desirability of all members being in uniform was being deliberated. Ivan broke up the show when he solemnly announced that whenever he came upon ladies in the nude, as an act of courtesy, he always dropped his pants.

Top cartoon

A local member, who is also a member of the Vintage Car Club, chugged around the grounds in an old model T Ford, as spic and span as it was many years ago.

Auckland is a big city, with roads shooting off in all directions, and not always clearly marked. All the visitors who travelled in and out of the city picked up quite a few tips on the geography of the place, specia11y one party which returned in the early hours after the lights had been switched out. Their cars a11 had reverse gears, fortunately.

Lowlight of the Rally.

A.O.H.C. tell us they do everything in big way. This unfortunately applied to the casualties. There were half a dozen mishaps, several being hospital jobs, but Bob, of Wellington took first prize with an appendectomy during the show. All are well on the way to recovery now.

Testimonial for Nudism

Since this information generated from both Kansas Clubs, Sandy Lane Club and Sycamore Hol1ow Association, it was deemed necessary to make a separate article about this matter.

Several weeks ago, Mabel (Earl's wife) underwent an operation. This couple belongs to both Kansas clubs. On October 26th, 1958, she wrote the following to both clubs:

"I had so many comments on my tan while in the hospital. I won't even try to tell you about them. I got some of the nurses interested. But I did have one thing happen some of you might be interested in. Don't get scared I'm not going to talk about my operation.

On the third day after my operation I had a coughing spell that sorta' started the whole thing. Anyway, my nurse called my surgeon, he called my medical doctor and I overheard their conversation. After my medical doctor had examined me again that morning, he sent me to X-ray. I had no idea of what was going on until I hear then talking about me. Here is what I overheard.

Dr. Surgeon, 'Why didn't you tell me she had T.B.?'

Dr. Medicine, 'I did not know it, I tested her, the test was, and still is, negative. I asked her if she had been taking sunbaths and she said 'Yes'.'

Then both doctors came into my room. They asked me why I had been taking sunbaths. By that time I was getting a big kick out of their apparent struggles for the right words. Instead of answering, I asked, 'Why?' This is their answer.

'At some time or other in the last few years you have had T.B. You have some rather large scars. Those sunbaths and fresh air have saved you months and possibly years of treatment in some sanatorium.' They explained some more about my X-rays and asked more questions. But that is the main point.

Dr. Medicine said he had heard of nudist camps for years but had always thought they were just a group of wacky people who wanted to be 'different'. Dr.Surgeon said, 'Well, after seeing what a nudist camp has done for you, they have my blessing, from now on.

You can bet from now on being a member of the ASA-NSA will mean more to me than just a 'good time' in the sun. You can quote me on any of this, but I do not have permission to use the doctors' names, as I never thought to ask for them.

Ed's comments. - I have the name of these doctors if their verifications are ever needed. Sometimes we cannot always know the full scope of the benefits reaped from our nudist activities, but here is one more reason why at least one person will always be in the sun and fresh air whenever possible.

Pen Portrait: Normal Murray

NORMAN MURRAY OF AUCKLAND SUN CLUB.

In every organisation there are always those who, by reason of their official positions, are often in the limelight, and also those who, because they hold no prominent office, are seldom seen or heard but who are, nevertheless, a tower of strength to their fellows. The sunbathing movement in New Zealand is no exception to this rule, and quietly working in its background is Norman Murray. Probably know one knows, or will ever know, just what sunbathers in New Zealand owe to Norman.

Here are a few of Norman's good deeds known to the writer and possibly two or three others only. Some years ago, Norman pioneered naturism in Brown's Bay, in Auckland, where naturists were assured of a warm welcome at his sunny beach. Today, the former beach is now a comfortable home for a naturist couple who arrived from England after the last war.

Norman also laid the foundations of the movement on New Zealand's rugged west coast when he bought ten acres of lovely bush country at Raglan, dammed a beautiful mountain stream to make a swimming pool, and renovated the house on the property so that visitors might always be comfortable should the weather change unexpectedly.

Norman's next good deed meant salvation to one of the two big clubs in Auckland. For reasons unknown to this writer the owner of this Auckland property felt obliged to sell all but a small portion of several acres of bush country with a rocky stream, camping sites, a games court and club house. There was consternation among the members for no one could say what the attitude of the new potential owner might be. But Norman was equal to the occasion. He bought the property himself and told the club members to carry on just as before. Could generosity and loyalty to a cause go further than that?

Yet if you visit a club in New Zealand where Norman Murray is you will take some time to find him. Modest almost to the point of shyness, Norman is seldom heard where conversation is going on. He takes little part in organised games for fear he should unwittingly deprive an enthusiast of a place. But if you look carefully into the background you will see a tall, fair man, magnificently tanned, a picture of rugged health, with a well-seasoned pipe in his mouth, and he will be either chopping firewood, carrying water, cleaning out a tank, planting trees, or executing some repair job or an improvement to make the lives of others in the camp more comfortable and happy. Yes, New Zealand sunbathers owe a lot to Norman Murray, one of the quietest, most self-effacing, and efficient workers in the movement.

Passports.

The I.N.F. passport is a personal one, therefore couples need two, one for the husband and one for the wife. Children do not need a passport until they come of age.

A passport costs 5/- and each annual stamp costs 5/-.

Passports and stamps are issued by the N.Z.S.A., on behalf of the I.N.F., in New Zealand.

I.N.F. Badges.

A small batch of these lapel badges are now to hand but the price has had to be raised to 3/- each. However, they are still cheap and are a discreet way of proclaiming your interest in the movement. We now have two types, the pin and the brooch. Please indicate your wish when ordering.

I.N.F. 7th World Congress, Denmark.

As a sign of growing recognition, we note with considerable interest an information sheet put out by the K.L.M. Royal Dutch Airlines, outlining, 3 preliminary tour plans to enable visitors to attend the Congress in Denmark and include such places as Scandinavia, Germany, Holland, France and England in the itinerary. The tours will include round-trip transportation, hotels, sightseeing excursions, interpreters, couriers etc. Enquiries should be addressed to Mangin Tour Associates, 1236 Massachusetts Laurence, Kansas, U.S.A.

Youth Leaders.

The following I.N.F. organisations have named the leaders of their Youth Sections: Germany, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland and Belgium. We gather U.S.A., England and New Zealand will be close behind.

I.N.F. Headquarters.

A little Danish farm has been purchased on a beach, and only 25 miles from Aarhus, the capital of Jutland. The buildings, fields and beach will offer ideal possibilities for a truly International Centre. N.Z. sends hearty congratulations.

ENGLAND.

We read in the November issue of Health and Efficiency of a beach where nude sea bathing has become so popular, that an attendance of 50 on a week day and around 300 on a Sunday was a regular thing this last summer, with members from Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Rhodesia enjoying this freedom. Admittedly it meant a long and arduous walk to get there, but although the activities are known to the police, they are not prepared to do anything about it, because they have no evidence of improper behaviour. To quote, "A revolution has been quietly brought about in one place in these last few years without violence or ballyhoo. It is a good British way of operating lasting improvements." New Zealand take note!

Born in the year 1935 in England, Sun Bathing Review has been in the forefront of nudist publicity and has been instrumental to a large degree in placing the movement in the position it holds today in Great Britain. Despite the hazards of war and many ups and downs, it has continued every quarter to carry authoritative news and views on the nudist scene. In 1938, Sun Bathing Review was bought by Health and Efficiency, a now it has been decided to amalgamate the two magazines into one. Commencing on Nov. 5th. we will have an enlarged publication that will incorporate features from both and should prove to be a valuable contribution to the movement which owes so much to it. N.Z. wishes the new H.& E., S.B.R. every success in its new form.

FRANCE.

The Annual Congress of the F.F.N. -Federation Francais de Naturism, which was held in Paris, attracted delegates 101 clubs. The general secretary, Albert Lecocq, made the encouraging statement that during 1958, a total of 19 new clubs had become affi1iated to the F.F.N., 15 new camps were founded and 7070 new membership cards were issued. Dec.4th-9th., 1959 saw an International exhibition of naturist photographs, cinema films and transparencies which was held in Paris under the patronage of the I.N.F. and arranged by the F.F.N. N.Z. has a long way to go to catch up.

GERMANY.

In 10 years the D.F.K. (Germany's National Assn.) has increased its club affiliations from 20 to more than 100, excellent progress indeed. The administration of this national association has grown so that a full time secretary has been appointed.

On the coast of the Bay of Lubeck, Western Germany, there was established this year a new centre of naturism. There is a 1000 metre long beach with car parks and camping sites. Bungalows were available and proved popular.

At the Baltic Sea centre of Gromitz, the naturist beach was extended to 1000 metres. The Ministry of Schleswig-Holstein gave official recognition to this nudist beach, creating a precedent in Germany.

The German magazine known as Unser Basein is now to be known as Freis Leben and is now officially recognised by the I.N.F.

CORSICA.

Difficulties in the development of this naturist resort are making it impossible to create the village as planned. Approval by the local authorities and co-operation of land owners in the district have not been successful and intending visitors are advised to contact the other 2 resorts on the island.

The Intersun committee proposes that the I.N.F. should form am international organisation with the object of supporting the creation of naturist villages. This organisation should accept as members all naturists belonging to a club affiliated to the I.N.F. and who are able to take part in naturist activities during their holidays as well as at weekends. "Link" is proposed as the name for the new organisation. To any members interested, the provisional address is: Bahnhofpestfach (R.K.) 2599, Zurich 23, Switzerland and please enclose 3 international reply coupons.

ITALY.

Is this a sign of progress... even in Italy? A sma11 group of people were arrested near Fiumicino and were taken to the ill-famed prison "Regina Coeli" in Rome. They were charged with bathing in the nude, but their stay in the prison was very short. When they were brought to court, the judge ruled that they were guilty of no crime and had not offended against public morals. They were freed with the ruling that their behaviour did not constitute a punishable crime.

AUSTRALIA.

Do you complain about the distance you have to travel to reach your sun club? Read this.

Two former members with three children of the Leicester Sun Club who immigrated to Australia a year ago tell us that they have a mile to walk to catch a train at 8am. After a two hour journey and, if the train is on time, they catch a bus (the only one each day) and travel another hour and a half before reaching the club. If the train is late and they miss the bus there is nothing else for it but to return home. No comment.

U.S.A.

Some interesting figures are disclosed regarding attendances at the recent American conventions. The 20th. Congress of the A.S.A. saw 769 delegates attending, some travelling more than 2500 miles. At the camp there were 133 cars, 21 trailers, 70 tents and 7 cabins.

Mr. Sunmerfie1d, the all-powerful Postmaster-General of the U.S.A. is well known to naturists, but not as a friend of our movement. From a daily newspaper in Switzerland we are informed that he has exhibited another bout of prudery by ruling that a postcard bearing a reproduction of the famous painting, "The Nude Maya" by Goya, may no longer be sent through the U.S. mail.

According to the German Press, 5 German sailors, doing their national service at a Navy Base in Charleston, were summoned to Court. Their crime was that they had bathed at Palm Island near the coast of South Carolina in the nude. They found in Judge Herbert Laudin a reasonable man, who talked to them in fluent German. Not only did he decline to punish them, but he invited them to go bathing again at Palm Island... wearing bathing costumes.

CANADA.

Two clubs have set an example to the world in public relations. On the 3Oth. May, 1959, the Niagara Gymnosophical Society in Ontario invited the general public (couples and single ladies only) to visit their grounds while members continued their normal naturist activities (not dressed for the occasion). 1048 people accepted that invitation and many of them undressed to swim and join in other activities. Within a few weeks over 100 of the visitors had joined.

On the 16th. August 1959, the Sunny Trails Club in British Columbia issued a similar invitation. 2376 visitors wore welcome and the event was televised from coast to coast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Over 500 trial visit cards, preparatory to membership, were issued to serious enquirers.

ARGENTINE.

The first naturist association since 1956, known as the P.A.N.D.A. has joined the I.N.F. With an imposing list of members, they have their headquarters in Buenos Aires and large grounds about 2 hours journey from the city. A third of this area has been cleared and a club building with overnight accommodation is available. The remainder of the area consists of forest. Our Argentinian friends have to proceed cautiously however, because the legal position as affecting the movement has not been clarified.

To those unacquainted with the delights of overseas travel, this little item is sure to be of interest.

Back to England after 10 years

By Albert (W.S.& H.S. Inc.)

The ship Johan Van Oldenbarnveldt (usually referred to as the J.V.O.) left a wild, wet & windy Wellington at 12.30 on the morning of May 14th, 1959.

Northward bound, Friday saw the opening of the swimming pools. Yours truly only ventured in once being unable to swim and not liking the idea of wearing a "bikini."

From then on the sun became warmer and we began to enter the tropics and soon arrived at Tahiti, the French so-cal1ed Pacific Paradise. Admitted a few hula hula girls were there bedecked with straw skirts etc. over other garments.

Each passenger as he or she entered the alley leading to the "coach" (a truck with wooden seats) gaily bedecked with greenery, was presented with a garland of flowers. Each aforesaid Pacific beauty (some had surely reached the retiring age) waved a 20 franc note at us, and when I shook my head, the garland was lifted off! So much for Tahitian welcome and as for me it is far from a paradise!

Later, at long tables bedecked with foliage overhead, we sat down to a Tahitian feast, queer messy things dished up in hollow bamboo cane and green leaves, uncooked fish, fruit and roots. The beauties and men danced in the open for our amusement.

Later that day we were again on our way, still getting into warmer climes, and shorts were the order of the day, but on the decks sun-bathing was really hot and I was glad that I had been "at it" before.

After eight days we arrived at the Panama Canal to stay put for a while, and looking over we could see many sharks eight feet or so in length. These I understood to be harmless, although I noticed that seagulls did not appear to alight on the sea. We entered the Canal and saw a U.S.A. base with warships, then the locks and U.S. police with the usual revolver and baton and the hauler engines or mules.

The J.V.0. did us well as we were enabled to have lunch on deck and at the same time see the sights as we passed. About 9.00 that night we pulled in at Christobal and went ashore. Some shops were open, part of the town was clean and part very squalid. While there a torrential shower caused the streets to become like rivers in a short time. Hot and humid here even with only shirt and shorts. I was sweating!

Forward once more to Port Ever glades - the jumping off spot for Miami spelt in big dollars - a fantastic city of mammoth hotels, sky scrapers and hotels with private beaches. The "on" season - Nov. to Feb. - brings all the film glamour boys and girls, the Errol Flynns and Bardots to this colossus with many horse race meetings and dog tracks. We were told that as much as 200 - 300 dollars would be necessary for one night there!

Onward again, this time to Bermuda, a gem of an island. A turn all round the island and Hamilton, the capital, and a look at the one time home of Churchill in the war and the Duke of Windsor as Governor.

On again towards "home". A day out and the weather was cooler and we seldom saw the sun. Shorts were washed and sunbathing was no more. This then was a good trip, warm and refreshing, and England gave us a hot, dry summer, and me some lovely nude bathing and sunbathing for 12 weeks. A good voyage, plenty to eat, a lazy life, a full ship, and the usual entertainments.

The Junior Section

T H E    J U N I O R    S E C T I O N.

Hello there!

My Name's Ken and at the National Rally in Auckland last January I accepted the position of Youth Organiser for the N.Z.S.A. My job is to assist Sun Clubs throughout the country in organising their youth groups, in several directions, with the aim of keeping the age section of up to 18 years interested in the movement.

During the Discussion Sessions at the Rally, this subject of how we could improve conditions for the Teenager, was talked about at great length and while each speaker had his or her say, yours truly was scribbling furiously in his notebook noting the various suggestions.

Since then quite a few schemes have been hatched, and through the medium of this magazine and Club circulars you will be reading and hearing about them before very long.

However we do want to launch three schemes immediately, so move one is this...

Each Sun Club will elect from amongst its' juniors and by them, a Junior President whose job will be to organise the Youth in his or her Club. By now most Clubs will have received the circular I have distributed and will be familiar with the details of this position.

The second move that has met with universal approval is the establishment of a National Junior Tenikoit Championship to be competed for annually at the National Rally for a handsome Trophy, which has already been donated by Duncan of the Wanganui Club. To create an incentive for you juniors to polish up on your tenikoits, I have suggested that your Club could sponsor a FREE trip to next year's Rally and already the Canterbury Club has agreed to do just that!

Now, Clubs, the challenge is there! Will you send a team or will you let the Canterbury mob take home the goods!

Finally, the third step in our Youth scheme is an Essay Competition of about 1000 words, of why you like Nudism.

This will be judged and the winning entries will be published in this magazine, as well as receiving a fine prize, which Trevor of C.S.H.C. has been pleased to donate.

So think about it and then grab that writing stick, some paper and jot down in a couple of pages "WHY I LIKE NUDISM" and send them in to me...

Youth 0rganiser,

Box 1823,

Christchurch.

Any juniors up to the age of 18 years, whose parents are members of a club or who are followers of the movement, may enter. Remember to send your name, address, and age with your entry.

All entries must be the unaided work of the competitor. Closing date is 30th. April, 1960 and the result will be announced in the Winter issue of the Review.

The trophy for the winner will be presented at the next National Rally at Wanganui, 31st. Dec., lst and 2nd. Jan. 1961.

That's about all for this issue, but remember all about those schemes will you. Get cracking on them, show some enthusiasm and we'll get away to a good start.

It's up to you... Ken.

OUR TEENAGE PROBLEM.

Contribution by Ad,

Wellington Sun Health Society Inc.

Translated from "ZONNEWIJZER."

We have all read, heard about and probably experienced in our own club, the dropping out of children when entering their teens. In our magazines this problem has been discussed at length, the solution suggested invariably being to create an interest so they will want to come.

This suggestion however, is a problem in itself, as in this unsteady age their interest might change from week to week and it is very difficult for an adult to keep track with it. But why not try and let them form their own committee or work group or whatever they want to call it? Or why not have teenagers in all the discussions so that they may have their ideas, suggestions and hints? And don't treat them as kids for they are now feeling grown up and you may be surprised with their bright ideas and clear views. And in your works programme, if you treat them as full members, you'll be surprised at the manpower you'll get.

Never ask the parents to bring them again, they are past the age of being brought. If they feel 1ike it they will come with Mum and Dad. As long as they are not thinking they are going to Mum and Dad's club, but really feel that it is their club, they will be in a happier state of mind about the whole thing.

A soon as we have achieved this and made the teenagers feel that it is their club, that they are important people and are a necessary part of it, then we won't lose them.

STOP PRESS!!!

STOP PRESS!!!

We have just received advice that the film "Nudist Paradise" will commence screening at the Paramount Theatre, Wellington on 25th. Feb.

The Dominion distribution will be largely dependent on its Wellington success.

Club Notes

Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc. (Members.) Box 2702, Auckland.

We're in danger of suffering from a collective swollen head over the nice things that people said to us about the Rally and our grounds. Suffice it to say that we enjoyed having our guests and that the majority were generous to a degree for which we were most grateful.

We are following up favourable Rally publicity as quickly as possible with a Visitors', or Open, Day on Sunday 31st.January. We have already had quite a few enquiries as a result of the Rally and we hope that this will attract a good deal more.

Rally visitors will be glad to hear that Dick and Anna now have power laid on to their house.

We have completed and painted the clubhouse bunks, so that one (double size) has a mattress and the other three single bunks can be used in conjunction with a Lilo type mattress and/or sleeping bag. The swimming pool in the creek has now been cleaned out and re-dammed. It holds somewhere around three feet depth of water. Road clearing has progressed in stages until now there is a clear path all the way down, (trusting vegetation does not grow too quickly). Some further lining for the clubhouse has been acquired, so that means another job towards progress. The club is now on a sound basis, following a generous offer of Norman, the owner, and we feel that we should be on the "up" grade soon.

Things here are still slow but there is plenty of work to be done. The new pool is coming on with what help is at present available.

Wellington Sun & Health Society Inc. (Members.) Box 6359, Wellington.

By the time this report is printed, the concreting of the pool will be finished and every effort is being made to have it filled and in use before the season ends. Landscaping the surrounds will take a little longer. The Official Opening of the pool is for Easter Sunday, 17th. April, but if it is wet then the opening will be held on Monday, 18th. April. Norman is building a Wendy House for the little girls and as this is about 9 feet square, it should keep them amused for hours. He also picked up a mechanical roundabout that is very popular with the younger fry. Spring-cleaning and painting of the clubhouse is making it cosy and vases of greenery and a bookcase make it like home.

The social committee has done a grand job and organised a barbecue, bonfire and fireworks night, followed by a party in the clubhouse till midnight and 22 stayed overnight. The Treasure Island Social and Dance was a highlight of the club's social activities, when hula girls mixed with pirates and dusky warriors in a colourful display. Coconut palms and a banana tree helped the atmosphere and a gay evening was spent with games, dancing and various stage presentations appropriate to the occasion. All sat on the floor to a wonderful supper. The Annual Xmas Party for the kiddies was another successful event, with lots of fun, presents and good things to eat. A decorated Xmas tree and Father Xmas who arrived in a Mercedes Benz, was a highlight of the afternoon.

The A.G.M. elected David - President, Hans - Vice-President, Perc - P.R.0., Jack - Secretary, Doug - Treasurer, and a committee of Coby and Ad. The year has seen an increase on membership with applications still coming in. A large contingent travelled to the National Rally and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Canterbury Sun & Health Club Inc. (Members.) Box 1823, Christchurch.

1960 is upon us, and we at Pine Glades extend our hands to nudists everywhere in cordial greetings. Canterbury is forging ahead and another record is pasted in our scrapbook following a most successful children's Xmas party. Old bewhiskered Santa arrived loaded with good things for the ninety-odd cheering children, who with the adults brought the total attendance to well over 120.

The holiday period has meant little slackening in the attendance - in fact the little "Canvas-town" in the camping grounds regard their Xmas at Pine Glades as the highlight of the year. The volley-ball and tenikoit courts were rarely idle, with game after game, followed by a shower, and into our pride and joy - the pool - without doubt, our finest asset. Pine Glades at the moment, is truly a picture, with healthy, tanned bodies about the place, backed by the colourful clubhouse and its brilliant gardens, the blue of the pool, the green of the trees and lawns, and, in the background, the tops of the tents peeping through the trees, while in the distance the Southern Alps complete the scene.

Drop us a line, won't you, - we'll be glad to see you.

Otago Sun & Health Club. (Members.) Box 2058, South Dunedin.

Advertisements every Saturday night in the local paper are bringing in a number of enquiries, some of which are genuine. Activities at the camp are somewhat at a standstill at present - we've had weeks of frustrating cloudy or soakingly wet weather This is excellent for the new grass sown down this season. We are going to make a start on a shelter shed... a sort of prefabricated building, which can be dismantled if necessary and carried away.
