Name Change

The name change of the NZ Nudist Federation to NZ Naturist Federation created some emotional reactions in me. The first impulse was to ridicule it. Why not name us exactly what we are? NUDISTS. The reason for this change according to the NZNF president Kay Hannam is to bring it in line with the International scene. Well that is fair enough of course, but what is it going to do for our local clubs? I have been myself involved in the name change of the Hawkes Bay Sun club to the Hawkes Bay Outdoor Leisure Club. At that time I was a great supporter of it. But do you know what happened now when I talk to others about our club? I seldom mention the name, and tell them straight that we are going to a NUDIST club. Saves a lot of explaining!! The question is: "what’s in a name". I believe that a name needs to reflect clearly what a organisation is all about. What are we nudists or naturists? The word naturist means nudist according to my dictionary, so for so good. If we look what the NZNF does, it represents the New Zealand Nudists, which is fine of course, we need an organisation like that. What they don't do so well at present, although a bit better than a couple of years ago, is promoting NUDE recreation in NZ. That is not so strange of course, because that was/is not the main task of the NZNF.

Some other Nudist organisations suffer from the same ailment. The Free Beach group for instance, was originally started to push for regulations to have some beaches officially declared as nudist beaches. They never succeeded, and the chances that they will is slim. This is mainly because it is not offensive to be nude on the beach. It is now a matter of who was there first, or outnumber the textile wearers. So what is it that the Free Beach Group does now? If we look at the present mission statement of the Free Beach Group, "promoting clothes free recreation in NZ" then we see that this does not reflect their name. The question I state here is: what does the Free Beach Group do in promoting Nude recreation in NZ? So no wonder that there is confusion.

I believe that the problem lies in the idea what the club or organisation stands for. Naturist clubs are for people who like to enjoy nude recreation in a exclusive environment and do not want it to become a crowded place. So it is logic that they are not enthusiastic about promoting nude recreation. Personally I know some members who never tell others that they are a nudist, and question the entrance of new members if they joining for the right reasons. It is only natural of course that people who own property, such as club grounds defend it.

Free Beachers like to get together in remote places, and don't like to advertise this to the general public. The fear that this attracts the wrong type of people still exists. As a result, some of these people who are of the wrong type are seen as nudists and give the real nudists a bad name.

So, not many people in the naturist or nudist (take your pick) organisations are interested in promoting nude recreation in NZ. The ones that are, are scattered and thus feel powerless, and/or unsupported.

I think that it is time we start to rethink what we really want. I like to promote nude recreation in NZ, and therefore set up a new group or total separate organisation. Or, what about renaming (we are good at this) the Free Beach Group? Any suggestions for a name? To kick this off, I am prepared to be a part of a group that promotes Clothes Free Recreation, (something different from nudism?) any one who is also interested in this can contact me. Together we stand strong. Shed your strict local interests with your clothes.

Share Fred Bear?

It is always interesting to open an email from the other side of the world and share ideas and promotional activities with other naturist organisations. Recently, a suggestion was made by my friend Roger Wright, Research & Liaison Officer for CCNB and Deputy Editor of British Naturism magazine that the Free Beach Group of New Zealand share the Fred Bare logo with our Australian counterpart - the Free Beach Group of Queensland.

What a brilliant idea. Not only would this wonderful little icon be recognised on beaches throughout New Zealand, but Fred Bare could prove to be an easy identification for beach goers worldwide! My overseas contact says "It makes huge sense for the NZ logo to be used, and the more widespread the better for all naturists. The 'inventor' and beach users should be mighty honoured".

On researching this idea further, I found that an approach had been made some years ago by Les Hotchkin, Editor of Australian Sun & Health and an avid free beach campaigner. Apparently the suggestion that Fred Bare be shared with the Aussies was declined and it is puzzling as to how this decision was made, particularly as the logo does not appear to be copyright, is used to advertise Bear tape and rubber tyres, and originated from a rubber stamp! The notion that this logo is exclusively for our own use is somewhat contradictory, given that the graphics on our own brochure appear very similar to that of another naturist organisation in the States.

Now it seems that a good many of our members would like to see our Trans-Tasman relationships improved and what better way to cement these ties than to offer Fred Bare to wave a friendly paw on Australian beaches.

Kay Hannam, President NZNF

When Kay's article was referred to the President of the Free Beach Association of Queensland; Traven Searle responded that "the FBQA was not ready to pick up on the idea"; "we have not been overly keen on adopting the Fred Bear logo"; "we believe that we should have one of our own"; "Australia has to look at finding a suitable (unique) logo. The ANF has a logo, which could be adapted."
The Free Beach Group Inc has cultivated the Fred Bear logo, and as President, I wonder why we should now forsake our cherished identity and only asset, as we approach our 25th birthday?

Ngatuhoa 99

Well, the millennium is nearly upon us and world trends in holidays away seemed to reflect in our numbers again this year. With a drop, I believe, of 30% in tourism in Honolulu where they expect 5 million per year, this is not surprising.

However 37 people, once again enjoyed the pleasure that this little bit of Paradise gives us every time we visit. For those of you that have never been, you don't know what you're missing!

It was great to see Patrick back in his chair, pigeon watching, Claude again with his fire water, Lisa, Vern & Pisces (a guide dog), which was a first for me; and many new faces which is great to see.

Thanks again to Bill & Fern for their efforts, as they do each year, with their cooking skills; and Geoff as my slave that gets a beating from time to time. Also Camp Mother, who puts up with Ron.

Next year, 2000, has already been booked for the nights of Saturday 22 January to Sunday 30 January, with a Party Weekend planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Why I do it, I don't know). So mark your calendar now as it is also our 25th Anniversary (I believe, being a relative newcomer, not being that old).

Have fun in the sun.

 Kuku Beach 7 February 99

On Sunday, 7 February 1999, approximately 60 nudists gathered at Kuku Beach (between Waikanae and Levin, north of the Kapiti Coast), to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first organised visit of nudists to a public beach. On this occasion locals were unperturbed by the invasion, and the authorities showed no interest. It was a perfect day, with "wall-to-wall" blue sky, warm water, and a vast area of sand to enjoy.

A Camping Holiday

January 1999

I normally travel by motorcycle, but going further afield, I accompanied Chris in his red "dinky" car. On the Wednesday, we left the coastal drizzle and headed inland to join the crowd who had travelled down from the summer camp at the South Canterbury Sun Club for a day visit to "Aoraki Naturally." This property near Lake Tekapo is being developed by Kay Hannam & Brian Williams as a clothes-optional homestay. We were intrigued by an unusual wheeled contraption with chimneys which stood in the driveway by the house. This turned out to be a mobile provider of outdoor meals - a trailer carrying both fridge and barbecue on which Brian cooked hamburgers for our lunch.

Back at the Tripp School, home of SCSC, were campers including several from the North Island, the Sun Clubs and Nudvan as well as many friends from the Free Beach Group. I hadn't put my tent up for two years, so got it wrong. Wayne and my neighbour helped put it up correctly. I was interested in the number of families there, My neighbour's daughter (fully four years old) was continually pestering dad to be allowed to take her clothes off and be clad in only sunscreen. Under these conditions, clothes washing is not a problem.

Thursday was the only day we had light rain, but the pot-belly stove in the clubhouse put out such a heat that it was still clothes-optional. The rest of the days were so hot that nudity and shade or pool were the preferred options. Talking, laughing and playing pètanque were the main adult activities.

The children had a whale of a time playing together, frolicking in the pool and joining in the various feasts and games. Programmes put on specially for them included arts and crafts activities, story time and evening fireworks.

It was pleasant to welcome Volker and Rebecca back from their trip to Germany. They reminded us that they had had a traditional white Christmas and had to catch up on the browning process. There were three actual birthday celebrations during the week but one would have thought there were more from the number in their birthday suits. For morning and afternoon teas, some kind souls often baked some interesting treats, enjoyed by all.

On the Friday evening Christine's partner, John, a fisherman who had been at work all week on the high seas, barbecued fresh fish for everyone. This was eaten with relish (not the bottled variety.)

Some of the advertised evening entertainment didn't eventuate, maybe because it stayed light so long in the warm evenings. People ate late and lingered outdoors. However, everyone was in the clubhouse on the Friday night to take part in the programme of entertainment provided by the "Fred Bear Players" (Joyce, Bert & Lester.)

We were invited to seek advice from "Doctor Legge-Pulley, M.D."

"How can I lose weight?" someone asked. "I've tried the light seafood diet but it doesn't work. As soon as it gets light and I see food, I eat it." "To lose weight," says the doctor, "you should try skipping. Skip breakfast, skip lunch and skip tea."

"Doctor, I'm having trouble getting to sleep at night. "Well, lie on the edge of the bed and you'll soon drop off"

"What's the cure for water on the knee?" "Drainpipe trousers."

Oh dear! Suffice it to say that the BMA would not have approved but the audience certainly did.

A musical game was prefaced by Joyce advising us to start off by wearing as little as possible, since "wearable art" would be provided. The mass strip - with teasing - that followed would have made an interesting video clip. Beatles music started up - "Help!' and "Money can't buy me love!" while Kleensaks full of outlandish garments were passed around the circle. The person holding the sack when the music stopped dragged out an item of clothes (sight unseen) and put it on. For me, how "easies" got their name baffles me. They certainly weren't easy to put on. A bag of accessories (hats, wigs, masks, etc) completed the ensembles. An EXTRAVAGANZA which will be proven, I hope, when we get to see the photos.

Hot weather prevailed on Saturday. In the afternoon, all were 'persuaded' to join in Top Ten games which Helen had organised assisted by Wayne. Balloon catching especially was quite a laugh as the penalty for missing was a wetting. Clothes optional became nude preferred.

A highlight of the week was the "sheep on a spit" prepared by SCSC President, Matthew. I was intrigued to see syringes-full of red wine injected into the sheep carcass as a marinade and slits made for the insertion of garlic. A washing-machine gearbox turned the sheep for the six to seven hours it was barbecuing, being basted by a mixture of wine and sugar. Salads etc. were provided pot luck for the alfresco evening meal. The meat was better than I have had in any restaurant.

My thanks to all who spent so much time and effort into making the time enjoyable. All co-operated, even the sun.

Gordon Sim

PS from Joyce

You may be curious as to the nature of the garment which Gordon pulled out of the bag - "easies," he says. Well, I've never heard of "easies". The garment looked to me like "roll-ons" or elasticated knickers such as a smallish woman might attempt to get into in order to flatten her contours. How Gordon got into them must be a modern miracle. We await the photos!

Note:

WE ARE PLANNING A GET-TOGETHER AT THE SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB DURING EASTER WEEKEND, (2-5 April) asking everyone to bring along their photos so that we can all see them.

Complaints about "Nudists"

Te Horo Beach

Radio NZ news, 10am, Saturday, 12 December 1998 reported that Sergeant Willy Roy (of Otaki Police), in response to complaints from some (a?) residents at Te Horo; has warned (the nudists) that "Action will be taken if illegal behaviour is detected." He has had three sorties out there and not "caught anyone" yet: but there have been a number of people noted "in the bushes". He said if they want to be nude they can "go elsewhere."

On the Monday, I phoned Sgt Willy Roy to discuss the report.

After explaining who I was and explaining that the Free Beach Group Inc promoted nude recreation at beaches and other suitable places, he responded that he hoped we did not do it at Te Horo.

I explained that we usually go to Peka Peka Beach, via Te Hapua Rd. This turned out to be the location of the complaints!

When I suggested it was not illegal to merely be naked on a beach, he agreed.

He said it was "those blokes in the sand dunes that were the trouble." When I suggested that they were "gays", he appeared relieved, and commented "they were there reading their gay literature waiting for an encounter."

I told him that many of our members were discouraged from going to beaches where homosexuals were proactive, that the behaviour brought disrepute to beaches used by genuine naturists, and that we support any action taken to rid beaches of any offensive behaviour.

He referred to people being offended by the sight of a naked person. I suggested the to be offensive (legally), it had to be a deliberate act - and he agreed.

I told him we advised our members to be out in the open on the beach where they could be seen, and where their behaviour could be seen to be beyond reproach. I read him our code of ethics.

At my suggestion, he agreed that genuine naturists sunbathing, swimming or playing cricket naked on the beach should have nothing to fear. He responded that "After all, it is the 1990s."

It is important that every opportunity be taken to distance genuine nudists from deviant behaviour. Nude is natural and healthy. Sex is natural, but not appropriate in public!

This is not intended to be a case of "Gay bashing", the remarks apply to ALL inappropriate behaviour. It is the inappropriate behaviour at Papamoa Beach that has caused problems for nudists. If you witness offensive behaviour, don't hesitate to take the necessary action.

Nude couple Jet Ski across Wellington Harbour

Recently, a newly wed couple, in response to a local radio station promotion, accepted the challenge to jet sky across Wellington Harbour clothes-free. The reward was $1000 to pay off some parking fines. The Evening post published a photo of the event, and as a consequence received a complaint from an "offended" reader.

Several readers came to the defence of common sense.

Here is a sample of those responses:
God's own clothing
Sir, - N Mclvor, in his or her abhorrence of the jet skiing nude couple on Wellington Harbour (December 19), should know this - that it is possible God does not wear clothes.
Eye for beauty
Sir, - Unlike N Mclvor who, in his or her letter described the photograph of the nude newly-weds offensive, I found it refreshingly beautiful. What a unique way of earning money to pay a traffic fine! N Mclvor should not look for pornography where none exists. Congratulations to the photographer for having an eye for both beauty and the unusual.
All about choice
Sir, - In reply to N Mclvor's letter complaining about your nude photo, I agree that the printer had a choice: to print it or not. The photographer had a choice: to take it or not.
The couple had a choice: to do it - - - or not. But N Mclvor also has a choice: to be offended or not. I'm sure God would be less apprehensive about the childlike innocence of the naked human body (moving too fast for anybody to see properly, anyway) than he would about the spreading of religious mass-fear tactics.
Delightful bodies
Sir, There I was thinking - what absolutely beautiful young bodies! Not a wrinkle between them! How delightful, and what fun! Far from being offended (I refer to N Mclvor), surely God was exultant!

Inside New Zealand

NINOX Films is producing a documentary on naturism in New Zealand, and will be visiting selected sun clubs and beaches around New Zealand. It is expected that the documentary will be broadcast later in the year.

Due to delays in rewriting the Database, we have not been able to publish the Directory of Members as hoped. The Directory will be published as soon as possible.

Castles in the Sun

Waikuku Beach, Saturday 18th December, 98.

When Dorothy and I arrived at Waikuku it was early afternoon and the sandcastle building was well underway with Joyce and Richard down on their knees, so intent on their creation that they did not see us coming. Bert stood nearby, apparently acting in a supervisory capacity.

In a few minutes we had slipped off our clothes and with various sized and shaped flowerpots, headed down to pit our skills against theirs.

Other visitors arrived - ardent sun lovers - swarms of ladybirds apparently anxious to join the Free Beach Group. They were insistent and it became quite distracting to reach behind and brush them off my back and to answer the pleas of my wife to do the same for her. She was too busy digging moats, piling sand just where I didn't want it, on top of my partially erected castle.

We all worked in silence, deep in concentration. Jealously I kept an eye on Joyce and Richard. Their castle was four or five times the size 01 ours. By now Bert had decided on creating something completely different - a sand sculpture.

High up on the beach, other FBG members baked softly in the sun, now and then cooling off in the sea. I decided to do the same, leaving my moat digger to her task. I didn't do any swimming: I dipped instead. The water, though not warm, was pleasantly cold.

Back to the castle. I felt young again. Building castles makes you feel that way. Creativity, the feeling of the sun on your bare body. Reminds me of when I was thirteen... My mother said, "When you go up the beach today, don't take off ALL of your clothes. You're growing up now."

I took my younger brother with me, for safety's sake. We took off all our clothes, keeping a sharp look out for intruders. In those days they could throw you in gaol if they caught you - or so they said.

Once again, at Waikuku, I experienced that wonderful feeling of freedom.

Joyce by now has the yellow flag proudly flying from the top of their castle, a sight to gladden the heart! Dorothy and I work feverishly to make ours look something like a castle, a square one with tiers like a wedding cake with battlements on top. Finished at last. Joyce carefully places the flag, taking care not to damage the fragile structure.

Now we go to view Bert's creation. WOW! A real work of art! A delicate sculpture of a woman, a supine Venus de Milo in sand, with arms, legs and everything in the right place, with seaweed hair and shells for ears. In the outstretched hand of the sand maiden Joyce places a 'Fred Bear' flag bearing the words, "Bare on the Beach."

Then the tide comes in to fill up the channels and moats around our castles. Before long, the elements mingle. I wax philosophical about the ephemeral! But stay - we have taken photos as proof of my story, and as a permanent reminder of a wonderful day at Waikuku Beach.

Some day I'll challenge Bert to do another sand sculpture - a reclining or sitting figure, perhaps. Maybe YOU could try it. A sandcastle doesn’t really have to be a castle; it can be anything you wish, even an armchair, a sleepy animal, a dolphin.., there are endless possibilities.

Come on out and join us. Swim in the blue, Pacific, lie in the sun, build a sandcastle, leave your worries behind and feel alive and free!
