Meeting at Rotota In a setting of extensive natural bushland somewhere between Taupo and Rotorua is the Rotota Sun Club. I can say that this club is unique in the world, being truly representative of New Zealand in character, with its natural assets of native bush, lakes, hot springs, streams and pools, mud pools and fumaroles. Imagine having a beautiful lake for Swimming and boating, and hot pools for lounging and socialising - all provided courtesy of Mothei Nature and at no cost or upkeep for members. Other clubs, eat your heart out! (Sorry!) This club must be a major attraction for naturist visitors from overseas. Its members come from far and wide. It may take several hours to travel to Rotota, but obviously it is worth the trip, as evidenced by the number of members who do it! Not least among the assets of this club is its hospitality to other naturists, including the Free Beach Group who are invited to join in special occasions such as the recent Labour Weekend celebrations. When I discovered that many Wellington FBG people, including most of the committee members, would be spending the weekend at Rotota, I had a sudden notion of joining them, as a great opportunity of meeting many people who up till now had been names on pieces of paper. For them, I was a voice on a recorded message fron the mainland, played at the AGM in Wellington. Now at last we have met in person and we have resolved to have regular two-monthly meetings by Speakerphone from now on. This will provide liaison and co-operative discussion of ideas and proposals for the promotion of FBG nationwide. My visit to Rotota was made possible by the help and hospitality of John Groombridge who invited me to his home and drove me to and fro (with a bonus visit to Te Papa). At Rotota, Bill Baine generously provided me with a boudoir (that is: a private space in his bus / accommodation in a secluded setting at the Lagoon End of the club grounds, which he also shares with John.) |
I am indeed grateful to these people who entertained me and took me on some of the many bush walks around the grounds, also to Neil and Ross who escorted us to the "Hot 'n Cold" and rescued me from the hazards of submerged rocks. "Chivalry" was a word which came to my mind on these occasions. I have just looked it up in the Collins dictionary: Chivalry: 1. the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, esp. courage, honour, justice and a readiness to help the weak (That's me!) 2. courteous behaviour, esp. towards women. In my eighteen years membership of the Free Beach Group I have invariably been treated courteously by everyone; and I wish that women and all those "reluctant wives" could hear my testimony and be assured of the respect they would receive as members of our clothes optional group. Joyce Fleming 2 November 1998 Websites Our web site specifically for the Canterbury region is up and running at: Unfortunately the space alIowance was not enough for our full pages, but the real advantage is that the CINCH people allow web forms, which means that we can be contacted by filling in a form in the browser. The URL is: Please have a look and send a test message, e.g. about the weather in your back yard, so we can test the system before the summer seasons starts. Of course you could also send your comments about our web pages. I always appreciate suggestions or notifications of any errors. Volker Kuhlmann **Also at: http://www.nznaturally.org.nz/FreeBeach/ |

Aoraki Naturally Clothes free Homestay in the Mackenzie Imagine lazing under colourful birch trees, the sun dappling it's warm images on your bare body, your mind soothed by the gentle, rippling sounds of the creek close by, intermingled with the relaxed chatter of others frolicking in the crystal clear waters. You're blissfully aware that if you lifted your head for a moment, you can gaze at the Southern Alps, backbone of mainland New Zealand, a truly breathtaking majestic mountain range combining snow fed rivers, yawning ravines, soaring peaks and towering rock faces, carved over thousands of years by mighty glaciers. This is the Mackenzie region, in the centre of the South Island of New Zealand, a vast basin of golden tussock grass, with Lake Tekapo, 710 metres (2,300ft) above sea level. Tekapo's Maori name derives from Taka (sleeping mat) and Po (night). Finely ground rock in the glacial melt waters that feed the lake create the beautiful turquoise water which is the beginning of the giant Mackenzie Basin Hydro Electricity scheme. The central location of Lake Tekapo makes it ideal for a wide range of summer and winter activities, enjoying one of New Zealand's highest average sunshine hours and a low rainfall of 573mm (23in). Just l6kms from Aoraki Naturally you will find a variety of services in the Tekapo village including hotels and restaurants, supermarket, garage, craft and ski shops. Numerous walkways afford breathtaking views of the Mackenzie including a challenging walk up to the Mt John Astronomical Observatory, operated by the Canterbury University, with three large telescopes for studying the heavens. The unforgettable night sky reveals why Lake Tekapo has a reputation for the clearest air in the Southern Hemisphere.

The surrounding area has many unique attractions, the neighbouring Mount Cook Salmon Farm has guided tours to feed the fish, or you can catch your own (rods supplied). Fish for sale fresh from the pen, or smoked is a succulent meal to enjoy later at the barbecue on the banks of Irishman Creek bordering our 8 hectare property. There are several options for exploring the Mackenzie and your friendly hosts Kay Hannam and Brian Williams can arrange a guided tour if you do not have your own transport. Most coach drivers, if asked, are happy to drop you off or pick you up at our entrance. Once on the grounds, it's easy to see why Kay and Brian love this area, with its million dollar view of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the rolling tussock ground offers plenty of room for camping and relaxing amid groves of birch, poplar and pine trees. A shady walkway alongside the creek opens out to a natural rest area below their country home. Ideal for barbecues, or just relaxing with a good book. Our Clothes free Homestay caters for up to 6 people and from time to time larger numbers may be accommodated. Comfortable accommodation, whether bed & breakfast or back-packer type, park your camper, or pitch a tent; the choice is yours...naturally so are clothes. If you're contemplating taking a trip to the Mackenzie, where better to stay than Aoraki... Naturally. Kay Hannam For further information contact:
Kay is a member of the Free Beach Group and the current President of the NZ Nudist Federation Inc. If you visit Aoraki, be sure to say you are member of Free Beach Group. Editor |

CANTERBURY NEWS
Summer 1998 - 99
OUR ANNUAL REPORT (Canterbury Region) was presented to the AGM in Wellington by means of a recorded speech. Credit Is due to all those members of our Group who have contributed in various ways to a very enjoyable year. Local membership has increased to - at time of writing - 42 units, which includes 57 people plus a varying number of children. Cops! Yes, I know. Children are people too, but I'm not sure how many we have altogether in the Group. However many, we hope to see you at the camp, or at the kite-flying and sandcastle events on the beach.
WEB SITES and E-Mail are fast becoming a major means of communication in the world, and we are grateful to Volker for his enthusiasm and the time he has devoted to producing a special page http:llmembers .wbs. net/homepages/f/b/g/fbgcanty/ plus a brochure particular to the Canterbury region, for local advertising. Not many of us are on-line at present, but those who are can communicate with fellow-naturists world-wide.
COMMUNICATION between members of the national committee will henceforth be held two-monthly by means of "Speakerphone" and local FBG enthusiasts may listen-in upon request, if practicable. This experiment aims for better liaison and open exchange of views, following a meeting which I was able to attend at the Rotota Club during Labour weekend (See separate article.)
PINEGLADES NATUIST CLUB at Rolleston has extended an invitation to the Free Beach Group and other guests to join in their Monthly social/spa/sauna evenings on the first Saturday of the month at a charge of $5 per person. Good-eh?
Joyce

The full program will be published once finalised but it will include Mock Court, a Board Games evening, a day trip to the MacKenzie Country and finish with a Sheep on a Spit. You can rest assured that it what ever else we dream up it will be fun.
For the more active and adventurous types our immediate area has lots to offer including, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing (trout and salmon), hiking, swimming, and boating.
For the more sedate there is public gardens, a historic homestead and plain old breath taking scenery.
Of course there is the sunshine and friendliness for all.
Phone Joyce Fleming for about registration: 03 322 7990.
The cost is $7 per adult per day/night or $50 for the whole rally, children, under 16, are free. This covers camping fees and morning and afternoon teas and the Sheep on a Spit on the last night. There will be "pot luck" evening meals, most nights, for those that want to participate.

NGATUHOA LODGE 99
Nights of SATURDAY 16 to SUNDAY 24, JANUARY 1999 Leaving Monday morning.
Ngatuhoa is a youth camp deep in the bush of the Kaimai Ranges. The camp has a bunkhouse with 50 comfortable bunks, a large dining-room with fireplace, and fully equipped kitchen with six hob gas cooker and slow burning wood fire. An outside building houses a barbecue, pantry, and a large fridge; another has hot showers and flush toilets. There is also a recreation hail for extra sleeping. Canoes and life jackets are in shed a short stroll away. There is plenty of room for tents and campervans. Power is supplied from a small hydro station nearby.
How to get there
Allow up to 4 hours drive from Auckland. Meet at the first gate at the end of McLarens Falls Road. McLarens Falls Rd is on the south side of Highway 29 between Matamata and Tauranga. Take extreme care turning into McLarens Falls Rd if you are travelling from Matamata towards Tauranga (McLarens Falls Rd is on your right and you have to cross on-coming traffic). If you over-shoot McLarens Falls Rd, Thom Rd is a short distance further on the left, and provides an opportunity to pull off SH29 and plan your next move. Do not go down to Omanawa Rd if arriving from Matamata; it is too dangerous turning right into Omanawa Rd. It's ok if you are coming from Tauranga and going straight up to the gate.
Ngatuhoa is about 23Km from SH29, through two locked gates, which cannot be left unlocked under any circumstances. We travel in convoy. Turn on your headlights, and watch out for on-coming traffic. The last 9Km is on a private forestry road, generally good, with several short steep narrow sections. We use the marked road to the Lodge, no general use of roads is permitted.
MEETING TIMES: 2pm Saturday, 4-30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 7pm Friday, 10am Saturday
YOU MUST BE AT THE GATE ON TIME OR YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER AT ANY OTHER TIMES unless you have made special arrangements before hand.
THINGS TO TAKE: All your own food, milk and drinks; eating and cooking utensils;
Sheets & blankets, or sleeping bag,and pillow;
Warm clothing for evenings; suntan oil and insect repellent; personal gear.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING A TORCH.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF FUEL IN YOUR VEHICLE - fill at Matamata or Tauranga.
GENERAL RULES
NO PETS: DOGS and CATS are NOT PERMITTED at the lodge.
NO CARAVANS The private roads are not suitable. We may not be able to help you if you break down or get into difficulties. The road vanes from year to year. Trailers with a reasonable vehicle have normally been Ok, (but we suggest some rope just in case). Cars are not allowed on the Village Green.
PERMITS are required for firearms, and a licence for fishing.
NO SMOKING IN THE MAIN BUILDINGS, we are our own Fire Brigade, hoses are installed.
CHILDREN are very welcome but watch them at all times. Responsibility rests with parent or guardian Streams and dense bush are all around.
POWER is limited, no heaters or high current appliances.
FRIDGE space is limited. Perishable food has first priority. Keep all chilli bins out of the fridge. They take up unnecessary space which others could use to keep their food cool. Chili bins also insulate their contents from the cold. Use a cardboard box instead, the cold will go through to the food.
CAMERAS AND VIDEOS Use with discretion. Ask first.
ALL RUBBISH THAT WILL NOT BURN IS TO BE TAKEN HOME WITH YOU.
LEAVE EVERYTHING AS YOU FOUND IT, OR CLEAN AND TIDY
