WHO IS THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL?
86
Whether it is sun clubs or anything else, looking back never gets you anywhere - not even backward. A touch of nostalgia may be less painful than a spasm of colic but neither contributes anything significant to the zest for living or the furtherance of the movement.
Yet looking back over the year's achievements has become a custom, a habit or a tradition, depending on the point of view. If you discard the rose tinted glasses and, laser like look into the years mirror, you could very well discover a sort of Alice Through The Looking Glass perspective.
Everyone who went will agree that the Canterbury Rally put 1986 into orbit splendidly. The NZNF seminars also went with a swing and last years executive can hold their heads up high, not only for organising them but actually producing something tangible as a result. We'll have progress reports on the projects from time to time.
Have you discovered it takes two to Tango successfully. South Islanders have and they also have a reputation of being more friendly, more adventurous and more imaginative. This was certainly evident at the South Island Seminar last year. To discover the reason for this, one must surely have to find out what goes on in South Island clubs which makes the difference. Well for starters the host club Canterbury increased its membership by 28% and Southern Sun and Nelson clubs increased their membership by 12% each. Now that's a sign of progressiveness is it not? But that's not all. Have you read South Island club newsletters? They're more interesting, newsy and thought provoking. Go out of your way to read some recent Orchard newsletters to see what I mean.
Now is that fair comment North Island Clubs? If it is what are you going to do about it?
The year ended with the Wellington Rally but it's difficult to comment on this event because your Editor was the Rally Organiser. A past NZNF President did say at the Annual meeting however and got support for his comment from the majority of other rally attenders - "It was the best Rally he had been to in 20 years."
And finally, one could nominate the men or women of the year as they do in cricket or other sports.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1987

Let's Talk Turkey
in Taupo
For Best Newsletter Award - shared equally between Nelson (Bill Davis), Orchard (Philippa Hornell) and Canterbury (Linda Adams).
The Encouragement Award for Younger Members must surely go to Albert & Geraldine Wayers of Wellington for organising a 12 hour programme per day for six days for the under 15's. Their success, besides good planning was in not playing down to the children so the children rarely played up.
And the "Lets Try It Then Award" goes to President Alan of Taranaki and Secretary Ray from AOHC who agreed to a half day for the National AGM instead of the normal full day. More work was done in half the time. The morning workshops were also successful. Let's continue with both ideas.
The North Island Seminar is to be held in Taupo at Queen's Birthday weekend, 29, 30 and 31 May and 1 June. Don't miss it, you are in for a treat, and we mean that. Some of the Wellington Rally team will be helping to organise the weekend if that means anything. Even the objectives are the same; Learn something, pass something on, meet new friends, get value for money and above all ENJOY YOURSELVES.
The theme is "GROWTH" and the seminar strategy has four main components: Focus. We recognize that we can't do everything all in one go so we have chosen at previous seminars to focus or concentrate our resources on particular projects including promotional packages. Collaboration by working together to make the best use of our resources including use of individual members, clubs, the Federation, INF and other overseas ideas and suggestions. New Markets and Marketing. We still believe we are a family orientated club, yet we have difficulty gathering sufficient young members to have a Christmas party these days! Times are a changing and our members are coming from other groups in larger quantities than the traditional family ones. New promotional techniques are required which are aimed at these new niche groups. Last but not least Standards. It's no use finding new members and not looking after them when they have been recruited. The Induction programme is sadly conspicuous by its absence in most clubs and "Dress" and behaviour standards are declining. What are we going to do about it?

AROUND THE CLUBS
Hawke Bay have a mini Rally on February 27, 28 and March 1. Programme includes informal evening and supper on Friday night, miniten and mini golf on Saturday morning, wine trails etc in the afternoon, barbecue and disco social in the evening. Sunday starts off with a champagne breakfast then volleyball and miniten finals.
Colorado Naturist Club (USA) have extended an invitation to the Bay of Plenty to become a sister club. Now that is a good way of importing new ideas. Does any other club have a sister club relationship? They also have a ditty on hygiene. When using club furniture remember -
If your rear is bare, cover the chair.
Manawatu Sunseekers are considering a name change. More details including rationale for the change in a later edition. Will it include "SUN" in the name. Many club members have a fixation about the club and the sun and to them both go together. No sun no club visit! Yet a lot of enjoyment can be had at club grounds without the presence of the sun. Unfortunately very few members realise this. This is why our club grounds are only used for 2 or 3 months of the year. Food for thought?
AOHC have organised a Veteran's miniten tournament for this month. Veterans means ladies over 35 and gentlemen over 40. Another good new idea.
Palmerston North are out to be noticed with their newsletter the same colour as the last issue of Intouch. They also had two Christmas parties, one for young members and the other for adults in the evening.
"The tasks the committee set themselves are almost complete" writes President Norm of Canterbury. Did your club committee set measurable tasks last year so you could gauge their performance? Have they set objectives for this year? Remember the aim of the clubs is to have several members vying for each position at the AGM. If tasks have not been set, they can't be measured. Then you may not know who is the best person for the job. Remember if a job's worth doing... etc. Sun club style is synonymous with excellence. Say it 3 times before club visits. Canterbury also use their miniten courts for roller skating. Now that's a new activity for our younger members and not so young members? They also list unfinancial members on their clubhouse notice board after a given period. Talking of their clubhouse, the eastern wall is to be decorated with a collage of photographs, illustrating many of the events and personalities of the club since its inception in 1954.
Finally Alan and Maureen of Tindo, South Australia write about people thinking about people. "It's another nice weekend and you have just arrived at the club all ready for a good yarn etc. But before you spread yourselves out give your neighbours a thought. When they arrive they may not be ready for instant company. They may want to unwind and settle down before they socialise. So give a little thought to others needs for a bit of privacy and give them room to move. Nudism is for people who all have different needs at different times."
