A Message from the Past President

We the outgoing committee, are indebted to many members for the help, encouragement and support provided to us during the past years.

We take this opportunity to thank you all sincerely for this help. We wish you were well in the coming years and please keep in touch. You will always be welcome in Auckland.

John Riggir for the outgoing Committee.

It is intended that this Newsletter will be the forum for the expression of ideas, opinions, and criticism; and therefore may not represent official policy.

The 1993 AGM.

There were a couple of breaks with tradition this year! This was the first time we've had a phone link with members in another centre, and the first time executive members have been elected from outside Auckland.

John and Fran made their large and comfortable conservatory available for the occasion, and some responded to the warmth in a fashion appropriate for the FBG. We conservative types, just sweated!

After the technicalities of the phone were implemented, the proceedings began. The Minutes of the previous AGM were read and accepted. Following the President's report we discovered there were still no Accounts ready for presentation, a matter of some concern. However Jim assured us they would be available by early November!

Next followed the Election of Officers (several had been nominated from Wellington), and the threat of a wind up was thwarted. After a lively discussion, subscriptions were set at $15 after Jim suggested a minimum of $12 would be needed to cover last year's costs.

So after a short burst of General Business and a foregone vote against the two EGM motions, it was into the real business: the afternoon tea!

Thanks John and Fran not only for the efforts on the day, but also the consummate dignity with which you've carried the Group in past years; and particularly your personally gruelling time of the last year, in the absence of anyone from Auckland coming to your rescue!

John Lowe

Visitors Welcome

Bob Dyett of 12 Ashwell Drive, Port Waikato (just past the Motor Camp) says that members visiting the area are welcome to drop in. After the whitebait season ends in November, is the best for nude sunbathing and swimming. There are one or two. primitive secluded camp sites nearby.

Nude Boat Trips

Malcolm takes his 35 foot boat for occasional day trips to Palm Beach, Waiheke Island on spring and summer weekdays when wind and weather allow. He can take 3 or 4 Free Beach members on these trips, returning the same day. Anyone interested should phone Malcolm at 09 534 2941.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are now due. At the recent AGM subscriptions were increased to $15 to cover costs. This is still a very modest amount to promote the objectives of the Free Beach Group and to be kept informed on recreational nudist activities. Please complete the enclosed yellow Subscription Renewal Form, and mail it as soon as possible, as we are late this year due to the deferred AGM.

Use the Renewal form to order items from the shop. Note that postage applies only once, for example, if you order two towels and one flag, the postage will only be $4.00. If you only order flags, then the postage would be $2.00.

Rangi Woods

Rangi Woods Camp will be held in the Pohangina Valley, north of Ashhurst again this year, Wellington Anniversary weekend which is the weekend before Ngatuhoa. Why not combine the two events?

For full details refer to separate information sheet.

Ngatuhoa

Ngatuhoa will again be a must for all those who have enjoyed the great Auckland Anniversary Weekend experience. If you don’t know what you are missing, make sure you ask someone before it's too late.

This year, Bill and Fern will be cooking an 80lb pig on a spit. Please bring $5 to pay for your piece, and some vegetables or salad for a pot luck course at the feast. You don't have to join in, but the aroma will get your taste buds stimulated.

People With a Purpose

About two thousand people have been members of the Free Beach Group during its twenty years existence. When we began, there was an initial wave of enthusiasm, with lots of people wanting to try it out. Gradually membership numbers stabilised as they drifted away.

Perhaps it is pertinent to look at the reasons why people leave. They lose interest, or find it is not what they want.

Other things become more important, or they just can't be bothered. Friction often drives people away. If another member is being even mildly annoying they simply get up and go.

So what makes us stay? We join the Free Beach Group to enjoy nude recreation with like-minded others. The more we harmonise with each other, the more comfortable we are and the longer we stay.

In some countries nudism on beaches is the norm, and you look out of place if you don't go nude. Many New Zealanders enjoy being nude in their homes and gardens, but hesitate to do so in public.

The purpose of the Free Beach Group is to promote nudism on beaches, so in a sense we are visionaries, seeking to spread our ideals among the cautious and the curious.

For who can resist that wonderful feeling of being out there on the warm sand, with the sun shining down, and that beautiful golden glow stealing over our bodies?

Hello from Christchurch,

A dozen of us met on the 24th of September to discuss this year's program. There was agreement to plan for more activities this year. Over the last couple of years our program has been quite sparse in the hope that this would encourage a good number of people to attend. Unfortunately, the limited good weather rarely coincided with the activity day. We are therefore trying the alternative approach.

Throughout the summer there will be a beach day on all Saturdays and Sundays except when something else has been planned. We will alternate between the two most favoured beaches - Spencerville and Woodend.

The Sauna Evenings will continue to be held on the last Sunday of the month at The Lace Bathhouse on Tuam Street in Christchurch. I often go there on other Sunday evenings and sometimes Sandra comes along. We enjoy it and recommend it to everyone. I know some of the group are a bit reluctant to go into a place like that but we feel comfortable there. There is a sauna, spa pool, steam room and a cold plunge plus a lounge where they serve coffee or cold drinks and where you can play Pool. If you get a Gold Card the entry fee is only $8 plus another $8 if you bring a partner, so the evening is not expensive.

The Swim Night on Saturday, 18th September at Wharenui Pool didn't attract a lot of members. A while ago we abandoned these evenings because of poor patronage, but all the members present at the September meeting felt they were enjoyable and so we tried again. Fortunately a few Canterbury Sun Club members came along but I'm afraid we didn't break even. If the swim nights are to commence again in the autumn we will need some commitment from you all. The pool is big enough for the whole group without any feeling of crowding, so there is no excuse, come along and enjoy yourselves and meet the rest of us. The price is $5 per person and $10 for a family so there is no excuse. The more people who come, the cheaper it will be.

We plan to spend a day each on the Waimakariri and Ashburton rivers this summer. Nothing has been finalised but there will be more details about this later.

WELLINGTON'S REGIONAL GENERAL MEETING

A Wellington Regional General Meeting of the Free Beach Group Inc. was held on 18 September. Seventeen members were present with two apologises.

The minutes of the Wellington meeting of 26 March, where a local committee was elected, were read and accepted. The finances to date were circulated and accepted.

The future of Wellington committee was discussed, it was decided to have a fully functioning committee, not just social, of 5 to 7 people using the rules of the F.B.G. Inc. to govern it's action. At a post national AGM meeting it was decided to amend this to decrease the quorum to 10 plus the committee and that the regional committee would have a chairman instead of a president. A new committee was elected, see list later.

In general business an increase in pool charges was suggested. A competition is to be run for a new calendar design to include directions to beaches etc. At least twice in the summer to have a beach day at Waikawa and to invite members from P.N.S.C., Palmerston North area north and to continue with the twice yearly beach days at Uruti Point.

The Wellington members felt that it is important to protect the Queen's Chain and that we should investigate ways of supporting any moves to do this.

Committee;

Rick Baker, Geoff Horn, Traven Searle (and Frank Peek who resigned on being elected National President.)

A.G.M.

Thanks to a favourable decision by the outgoing national committee Wellington was allowed to take part in the A.G.M. via telephone. With over 30 people present in Auckland and 17 in Wellington there was in excess of fifty people involved. The Riggir's had a telephone with loud speaker and inbuilt microphone for the purpose, in Wellington Traven had borrowed a "voicepoint" from work. A "voicepoint' is a device that is specially built for the purpose of several people in one location being in telephone contact with other meetings and we believe these can be hired for about $5 plus $15 deposit. More than two locations/meetings can be linked by teleconference for under $2 per minute per location. The savings in transport costs far out-weigh the telecommunication costs. "Voicepoints" plus Teleconference may be the way for future A.G.M.s, we certainly thought the exercise was a resounding success.

Rangi Woods

The application form is included with the newsletter. Fill it out and return it. Don't forget to bring a bag of wood for the open fire, you can use the bag for your rubbish. At Rangi Woods we are not allowed to burn any of the timber from the surrounding bush, even the dead wood, as it alters the habitat. We also have to take our rubbish away with us. It's a great place for a great time. See you there!

Swim Nights

Thanks for the support. We look forward to next year, what looking forward to Winter? The swim nights are great fun so don't miss out! Enjoy your summer and get out on to the beaches.

NGATUHOA LODGE

Nights of WEDNESDAY 26 to SUNDAY 30, JANUARY 1994 Leaving Monday

Ngatuhoa is a youth camp deep in the bush of the Kaimai Ranges. The camp has a bunkhouse with 50 comfortable bunks, a large dining-room with fireplace, and fully equipped kitchen with six hob gas cooker and slow burning wood fire. An outside building houses a barbecue, pantry, and a large fridge; another has hot showers and flush toilets. There is also a recreation hall for extra sleeping. Canoes and life jackets are in shed a short stroll away. There is plenty of room for tents and camper-vans. Power is supplied from a small hydro station nearby.

THINGS TO TAKE: All your own food, milk and drinks; eating and cooking utensils; sheets & blankets, or sleeping bag, and pillow; warm clothing for evenings; suntan oil and insect repellent; and personal gear. MAKE SURE YOU BRING A TORCH.

MEETING TIMES: Wednesday 2pm, Friday 7pm, Saturday 10am

YOU MUST BE THERE AT THESE TIMES OR YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND

Allow up to 4 hours from Auckland. Meet near the top of the hill at the junction of State Highway 29 and Thorn Rd, as shown on the map. Ngatuhoa is about 23 km from this point, through two locked gates which cannot be left unlocked under any circumstances. We travel as a group. The last 9 km is on a private forestry road - generally good with several short steep narrow sections. We are to use the marked road into the lodge, no general use of roads is permitted. It is sometimes difficult getting across the main highway onto McLarens Falls Rd in heavy traffic, especially on Friday Night. We suggest after meeting people go across the road individually and arrange to meet up again at McLarens Falls Park, or if you have been up to the Lodge before, at the first gate.

THURSDAY 7pm: In addition to the above, we will check for anyone at the first gate, but we will not check the Thorn Rd meeting place

Do not go down to Omanawa Rd, it is too dangerous turning right into Omanawa Rd. It's okay if you are coming from Tauranga and going straight up to the gate.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF PETROL - fill at Matamata or Tauranga.

GENERAL RULES

NO CARAVANS The private roads are not suitable. We may not be able to help you if you break down or get into difficulties. The road varies from year to year. Trailers with a reasonable vehicle have normally been okay, (but we suggest some rope just in case). Cars are not allowed on the Village Green.

PERMITS are required for firearms, and a licence for fishing.

DOGS and CATS are NOT permitted at the lodge.

NO SMOKING IN THE MAIN BUILDING, we are our own Fire Brigade, hoses are installed.

CHILDREN are welcome but watch them at all times. The ultimate responsibility rests with parent or guardian. Streams and dense bush are all around.

POWER is limited, no heaters or high current appliances.

FRIDGE space is limited. Perishable food has first priority. Please keep chilli bins out of the fridge. They take up space which others could use to keep their food cool. Chilli bins also insulate their contents from the cold. Use a cardboard box instead, the cold will go through to the food.

CAMERAS AND VIDEOS Use with discretion. Ask first.

ALL RUBBISH THAT WILL NOT BURN IS TO BE TAKEN HOME WITH YOU.
LEAVE EVERYTHING AS YOU FOUND IT, OR CLEAN AND TIDY
