CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH

September/October 1991

Spring seems to be already here in Christchurch. One hardy soul has been paddling in the water already although the rest of us are prepared to wait awhile yet. We have had three swim nights this winter which have helped us to stay in touch and I think most of us will want to do something similar next winter.

We must be a fairly unstructured lot on the Mainland because we don’t seem to want organised weekends. A majority likes Spencerville Beach and so for the first part of the summer at least we will treat it as our regular 'home' beach. This simplifies the diary, as all I have to say is "see you down there anytime you can make it." The suggestion of going north from the surf club didn't catch on last year so if you want to meet some of the group go south towards Waimairi Beach and look out for the yellow flag. I hope as many of you as possible will buy a flag to attract the rest of the group and to draw in prospective members.

Gerald Robertson has some good ideas for publicising our group. I hope they get your support and bring in some new members. Although the local group grew quickly to its present size we seem to have stuck at around 25 for a while. This is not really enough members to keep the group viable. It just needs a few members to not show up (there's no reason why everyone should always attend) and we become too small to be effective. So lets try and encourage others to join in. After all we like it so let others in on the secret. Better still, lets stop being so secretive.

Auckland have got a copy of the video 'Naked Down Under' and we should be getting it sometime. It would be very nice to round off a day at the beach with a film.

It was very pleasant to meet two young people from Dunedin at our last swim night (10 Aug). Margaret Caughley and Neville Walker called in on us on their way to Wellington for their swim night on the 11th of August. I couldn't believe anyone was that keen - and I was right. Their main reason for the journey was to attend a wedding in Wellington the following weekend - their's! Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Walker.

I'd also like to thank the members of the Canterbury Sun Club for inviting some of us to their Mid-Winter festival and for coming to our swim nights.

WELLINGTON NEWSLETTER

Sept. - Oct. 1991

Chris Arnold

The Wellington Free Beach Group is made up of a variety of people and it is hoped the Newsletter will be seen by us as a way of sharing and showing that diversity.

EDITOR'S
COMMENTS

Peter Hooper

In our group the women are keen to speak out about how they find things. Some of the men are finding what is coming to the surface rings bells for them as well. The style of things is moving very much towards collective strategies rather than leaving things in the hands of a few.

Problems like communication issues, the difficulty of collective decision making and defining lines of accountability are part of the change. We need to give ourselves permission to make a few mistakes and not give up when errors are made. What we are doing flow I believe is a step in the right direction.

At the next formal Meeting there is an advantage in building in a review process. Accountability to the group is an important issue.

Two positive notes are our wish to build even stronger links with those outside the Group and the concern for children and young people.

Stuart is building links between the Group and the Local Wellington Sun Club. Marilyn has been acing things in the area of Public Relations with adverts in local newspapers and so forth.

The majority of the young people in our group are under the age of ten. Boys dominate things in the zero to five years category and girls outnumber the boys in the six to ten year old group. Children are the responsibility of the parents or the adults who care for them, but as a Group our sensitivity to demographics is worth working at.

Enjoy the read and all the best. The women will be making a special contribution in the next issue.

Mid Winter Swim

Nine people enjoyed a cold dip and joined others at a very enjoyable party at Bill’s home. Thanks Bill! Certificates were given to those who took the plunge.

L E T T E R

I have read the recent correspondence on changing the FREE the name of BEACH GROUP Inc. I support Jackie Caldwell's rejection of any change. I associate the first word in our name with freedom (unrestricted and not restricting), the second word with beachhead (our launching place for breaking down social barriers), and the word Group with together, well organized, common cause.

It is interesting to note that the main proponents of a change are two retired gentlemen, free of dependants (eg children at school etc), and not inhibited by employment (work/customer rebuke etc). Yet, I know there are exceptions to this apparent immunity.

The name FREE BEACH GROUP provides a degree of anonymity for those who need it, and an opportunity to explain our activities and objectives in a constructive manner without the mental block sometimes created by the word 'nude', etc.

To suggest that we have moved from the beaches, and are now invading the land is navel gazing. There appear to be few beaches in NZ which could be classed as free/dress-optional, ie Papamoa and Breaker Bay, Wellington. Reading the Beach Directory reveals the isolation of our ‘free beaches’.

When we are free to roam the countryside, and if the FREE BEACH GROUP still exists, we will be reminded by our name of what we have achieved.

FREE BEACH GROUP INC

New Plymouth Newsletter - September - October 1991

MID-WINTER MEETING, 17 JULY

A small group of enthusiastic members met at the organisers’ home to watch the video ‘Naked Down Under" and discuss the programme of activities for next summer. Some good ideas were proposed, and we agreed on the general form the programme should take.

Sunday will still be our preferred beach day, and Tapuae Beach will be our main venue. Once a month we will ring the changes and visit a different beach, or riverside, or perhaps visit the local nudist club. We will also have nude tramping and camping, and attend the FBG bush camp at Ngatuhoa in January.

SAUNA AND SPA, SUNDAY 21 JULY

The Taranaki Naturists Club kindly invited our members to a sauna and spa afternoon at a local massage parlour. Doug took along some nudist videos and books, and we had a pleasant afternoon out of the cold wind.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER PROGRAMME

Our first beach day for the summer will not be until November, so details of our programme will be in the next Newsletter. In the meantime, mark all Sunday afternoons from November 3 to March 29 on your calendars and keep them free for FBG outings. In the meantime why not round up all your friends and encourage them to join FBG? They will enjoy it as much as you do. Write direct to Auckland for membership forms, since we will be away overseas during August and September.

Peggy and Doug Ball.

NEW ZEALAND'S 'FREE' BEACHES PROVEN LEGALLY FREE

Since the passing of the Summary Offences Act 1981, the Free Beach Group have consistently claimed that this Act upholds the right of a person to swim and sunbathe naked at any place where nude bathing is accepted. This claim has now been vindicated by a recent ruling in the Auckland High Court, confirming that the practice of ‘passive nudity’ on free beaches is within the law.

Late last year an Auckland naturist, who frequently sunbathes nude on a small beach, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure and offensive behaviour. A party of children and teachers from a local primary school were on the beach at the time.

The District Court judge dismissed the charge of indecent exposure because of the man's 'strong naturist beliefs', but convicted him for offensive behaviour. On appeal, the High Court threw this out, ruling that the reactions of the school party fell far short of the 'feelings of anger, disgust, or outrage' required to sustain a charge of offensive behaviour. The judgement effectively protects the right to sunbathe nude in places "where it is not uncommon for persons to sunbathe nude".

The Free Beach Group congratulates this man for standing up for his rights, and we are delighted that the case has been brought before the courts and won. But perhaps the most significant aspect is that the beach itself was established as a 'free' beach merely by the fact that the naturist had used it for nude sunbathing for several years.

So choose your spot and lie in it! Once a track record of nude bathing is established, your rights are protected at all times.

(A more detailed account of this court case will appear in the December Naturist).

NUDE EXPERT STRIPPED

A PROFESSOR of leisure who studies nude beaches has been sacked after being accused of unprofessional conduct and neglecting his teaching duties.

George Harker, professor of leisure at Western Illinois University for 21 years has twice circled the world on trips he wrote off as business expenses on his tax forms. He says he was persecuted by colleagues who envied his growing prominence as an expert on nude beaches.
